Pedal to the Metal: NASA’s Psyche Heads Toward Asteroid Belt

The spacecraft will use its solar electric propulsion system for 90% of its cruise until it reaches the asteroid Psyche by the summer of 2029.

With a successful Mars gravity assist in its rearview mirror, NASA’s Psyche spacecraft has fired up its thrusters and is accelerating to the metal-rich asteroid of the same name.

During the first leg of its journey, following an October 2023 launch, the mission used its electric propulsion system intermittently to maneuver to the right place for harnessing Mars’ gravity for a propellant-saving speed boost and a slight trajectory change.

On Sept. 28, the spacecraft began to use its propulsion system nearly continuously, pausing just once each week to check in with mission controllers on Earth.

This keeps the mission on track for its rendezvous with the asteroid Psyche in the main asteroid belt by the summer of 2029.

“It’s now ‘pedal to the metal’ to the asteroid Psyche,” said Don Han, the Psyche mission’s navigation lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which is managed for the agency by Caltech.

“We will be running our propulsion system at every available opportunity, pausing only for necessary engineering activities. The thrusters will be operating nearly 90% of the time from now until we reach the asteroid.”

Xenon propellant efficiency

Where conventional spacecraft thrusters rely on large quantities of fuel to provide powerful bursts of thrust for relatively short periods of time, the Psyche spacecraft’s solar-powered propulsion system uses electromagnetic fields to steadily deliver up to 250 millinewtons of force — about the amount of force that you would feel from the weight of holding one AA battery. The highly efficient system relies on a mechanism known as the Hall effect, in which charged atoms, or ions, of the inert gas xenon are expelled to create thrust — and a bright blue glow.

Each of the four thrusters operates one at a time. Though the thrust is tiny, it builds up over the course of the journey, enabling the spacecraft to gain speed as it travels through interplanetary space.

At its maximum speed during cruise, the Psyche spacecraft will be traveling more than 100,000 mph (160,900 kph) relative to an observer on Earth.

NASA Science wants to deliver science faster, so we’re changing how we compete and select missions.

On Monday, October 26, we will host a virtual NASA Science Town Hall, from NASA Headquarters, to explain our new Competition Model 2.0 (CM 2.0), and answer your questions. (Details below.)

We have heard you. We have listened. We know that the burden of bringing great ideas forward has been too heavy for too long. It has taken years to move mission concepts through the current two-step process.

This has often come with contract management challenges, unpredictability, and not enough funding. NASA is committed to doing better — and I’m excited to share with you how we’re making it happen.

I am so pleased that NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has empowered the Science Mission Directorate to take action and make our mission selection process move more smoothly, efficiently, and effectively.

The Administrator has directed us to accelerate the delivery of science, reduce the time and resources spent on long competitive processes, and focus funding on the highest-priority missions across every NASA Science division as quickly and affordably as possible.

Predictability in delivering incredible science will be at the forefront of what we do.

We are committed to getting this right. Some of these changes will take time to fully implement. We will roll them out in stages, be thoughtful about them, and refine them with your input along the way. But time is also of the essence.

By streamlining how missions are proposed, reviewed, and selected, we can make meaningful change right now. That streamlined approach is Competition Model 2.0, or CM2.0, and it is how we are answering the Administrator's call to get you to science faster.

A Better Way to Compete

CM2.0 starts from a simple idea: compete on the science first. Proposals will be science-focused and will not require detailed engineering plans, cost, and implementation work until they are truly needed to make a decision.

This frees you to spend more of your time doing science and less of it proposing how to do science.

Here is how we will streamline mission selection across our mission classes:

Flagships (directed missions):

CM2.0 will not change how we manage our largest missions since that process has already been reformed.

After the James Webb Space Telescope, NASA conducted the Large Mission Study which drew lessons from Webb and best practices from our most successful flagships into a single, documented approach for building large missions more efficiently.

Flagships will continue to follow that approach, with NASA directing the overall mission to a lead NASA Center and it will then compete the science teams and instruments through targeted solicitations.

Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar said she plans to move out of her Washington DC apartment after federal agents raided her residence last week as part of a larger immigration investigation.

“I mean obviously, I can’t continue to live there,” Omar told MS Now in an interview that aired on Wednesday. “So we have to figure out where to move to, because our address has been public and with the death threats that I deal with, it’s no longer going to be feasible to be in that house and have my kids, like, visiting off and on, having people track them.”

The congresswoman, a Democrat who has been subject to Donald Trump’s attacks, also denied allegations of immigration fraud.

Those in the president’s orbit – cabinet officials and rightwing influencers alike – have promoted baseless theories about the Democratic congresswoman, accusing Omar of being in a sham marriage with her brother and fudging details of her immigration paperwork.

The brother rumors circulated on a Somali blog, Omar told MS Now host Chris Hayes, before it gained traction with rightwing conspiracy theorists in Minneapolis.

She believes the raid was designed to appease Trump loyalists.

“They kept alluding to the fact that something was going to happen to me,” Omar told Hayes. “They had to do something, I believe, to say, ‘Hey, look we raided her house.’”

The 12 October raid marked an escalation of a years-long feud between Omar and Trump.

Trump has repeatedly denigrated Omar’s character, faith and Somali heritage, most recently on Tuesday, when he called her a “sick, very dishonest person who hates our country” while answering reporters’ questions at the White House.

Trump had been asked if Omar could face deportation over alleged misstatements in her immigration paperwork, to which he replied: “Well, she could be. She could also go to jail.”

In the MS Now interview, Omar also shared further details about how the raid was conducted.

About 15 to 25 Homeland Security Investigations agents surrounded Omar’s home and pounded on her door at 6am while she, her husband and her 20-year-old son were home.

“I thought something was on fire,” Omar said, recounting how she scrambled to put clothes on and answer the door before agents broke her front door.

The agents then executed a search warrant. According to Omar, after scouring her residence room by room for nearly five hours, the agents took 17 items, including several phones.

“You don’t show up to somebody’s house that early in the morning unless you’re trying to freak them out,” Omar said.

“Obviously, they’d like to see me locked up, deported and all of those things. But I think the bigger satisfaction for them would be for me to be like, ‘I’m tired of all of you and I’m going to leave,’” she said. “I have a legal right to be a member of Congress.”

Threat level: Demos like this one are becoming more urgent, as the Russia-U.S. satellite tango over the weekend shows.

Catch up quick: In Victus Haze, the Space Force tasked Rocket Lab to launch its maneuverable space vehicle, Puma, in 24 hours. Once in orbit, True Anomaly's spacecraft, Jackal, quickly chased it down.

True Anomaly said it was the first ever space-to-space pursuit as part of a "tactically responsive" Space Force demo.

Inside the room: Rogers said the True Anomaly team worked quickly on the operations floor to jockey Jackal into a position around Rocket Lab's Puma spacecraft.

"We were making upgrades to the Jackal [software] platform between sorties and during the mission," Rogers said.

What we're watching: Future rapid Space Force demos are on the horizon.

NRO calls for international cooperation to deter “unprecedented” adversary threats in space

Arlington, Va. – An increasingly congested and contested space environment is creating a greater imperative for the United States and allied nations to work together to deter adversaries and protect assets in space, the National Reconnaissance Office said at an international conference Tuesday.

“We have a long history working with our international partners, and we are much stronger when we provide a united front against any adversary in the world,” Maj. Gen. Chris Povak, deputy director of the NRO, said at the International Security Space Forum.

The event, hosted by the National Security Space Association, convened representatives from more than a dozen allied nations to discuss the future of security cooperation in space.

Povak noted that improved access to space – driven by lower launch costs, access to advanced technologies, and more efficient commercial production methods – has led to a massive increase in international space activity over the past two decades.

More than 80 nations operate satellites in space – double that of 20 years ago. Almost as many government space agencies were formed in that time span, and 16 of them have independent launch capabilities.

The number of orbital space launches has more than tripled, from 90 a decade ago to 330 in 2025. In 2015, there were 1,400 active satellites on orbit; today, there are more than 16,000.

“With that increased access, more actors can do things more nefariously in space, and we have absolutely seen that over the last 20 years,” Povak said.

Povak pointed out that Russia, China, and other nations have become more capable in their efforts to deny others access to space.

They are developing, testing and deploying their own weapons and anti-satellite capabilities and seeking to destroy or interfere with U.S. satellites – employing “a variety of different threat systems,” including high-capacity, high-power microwave systems, high-energy laser systems, direct ascent anti-satellite systems, and a variety of co-orbital threats. Still, Povak identified a positive impact – unity among allies.

“It is bringing this community closer together,” he said. “I think we are doing things like sharing information at levels never seen before, and that's across nations and between government and commercial.

We are working deliberately through architectures like force design – how do we ensure interoperability of space systems from the earliest phases of design?

How are we ensuring that we, where it's in the best interest of both nations, are entering into cost-sharing agreements, and then how are we working together to develop those systems?”

To ensure the United States maintains its superiority in space, the NRO is expanding capabilities on orbit, building resilience into its operations in space and on the ground, and hardening its infrastructure to mitigate risk.

That requires strengthening partnerships with industry, academia, and international allies to push the boundaries of technology – innovating faster to meet mission needs.

“I think there's a lot of opportunities,” Povak said, “even though we are seeing unprecedented challenges in the domain today.”

A home care company that former Upper Darby treasurer Mohammed “Danny” Sayduzzaman has described as the only one of his businesses that is profitable has seen its Medicaid payments grow more than tenfold in five years, according to state records. Despite that robust growth, Upper Darby Township has not been able to produce a business registration for it.

In addition, all three shareholders New Hope Home Care lists in its application to the state — Sayduzzaman, Kutubul Alam and Mst Hosneara — are named in federal tax liens totaling about $357,000.

One lien, against Sayduzzaman and his wife, Tanzina Hossain, totals $230,347 as of Sept. 30, 2024. Another, dated Jan. 12, 2023, against Alam and Hosneara, totals $127,045 in unpaid income taxes for 2020 and 2021.

Sayduzzaman, a Democrat, was elected in November 2025 as treasurer of Upper Darby Township, the sixth-largest municipality in Pennsylvania, which sits on the eastern edge of Delaware County and borders Philadelphia. He was sworn in Jan. 5. He resigned at the end of July, less than seven months later, citing New Hope Home Care in his resignation letter.

His exit followed a pair of Broad + Liberty reports: in May, that his required financial disclosure omitted business interests and a federal tax lien; and in July, that a corrected filing dated June 6 listed eight business interests, and that a party center in which his wife is listed as president carried 19 township tax liens totaling $43,933.

Records obtained since then turn to the company he pointed to on his way out. They do not show that New Hope billed improperly, and no agency has said so. But more than tenfold growth in five years, alongside a township that can’t find a registration for the company and federal tax liens against all three shareholders it lists with the state, raise serious questions.

New Hope’s payments come almost entirely from one type of service: agency-directed personal assistance, in which aides help people with daily living and the company bills Medicaid managed care plans for the hours they work. The state’s records show no fee-for-service claims for the company.

The Wide Awakes were a Republican group of young men organized to escort and protect Republican speakers during the highly contentious election of 1860. The men would wear uniforms hats and march with lanterns to protect Republican speakers in northern states from unruly political opponents.

The organization of mostly young working-class men did not sit home or cower from the political violence of the day.

The Wide Awakes had chapters in several free Union states including Ohio, New York, Connecticut, Illinois and Iowa, to name a few.

The members escorted Republican speakers, surrounding them and protecting them from the violence of the slave supporters and Democrats. In many cases, rowdies ambushed Wide Awake parades, hurling bricks and screaming, “Kill the damn Wide Awakes.” This is similar to the tactics of the American left today with their Antifa and BLM shock troops with the support of the intelligence agencies.

Oscar Lawrence Jackson, a twenty-year-old who lectured to open-air audiences in rural Ohio, recorded an incident in which drunken Democrats tried to shout down his speech. “It came near taking a serious turn,” Jackson wrote, “as the ‘Wide Awakes’ were prepared and would have shot and sliced them like dogs if any one of us had been struck.”

Households have been warned to 'be ready' for a national crisis in a new campaign launched by Andy Burnham's Government.

Stockpiling three days of food and water, and having enough cash to get by if the electronic payments system collapses are among the precautions recommended.

The checklist of measures - which people are urged to print out and keep handy - also includes having a wind-up or battery radio, and a power pack to charge devices if the power goes off.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said the guidance would help people brace for events such as wildfires, flooding and cyber attacks. However, senior officials and military figures have also been highlighting the risk of sabotage or even a strike by Russia.

Mr Streeting insisted 'everyone needs to do their bit' - with a radio and social media campaign set to spread the message in the coming weeks.

However, the Government seems to have taken a very low-key approach to the launch, activating the site without fanfare months after Keir Starmer's administration signalled the campaign was coming.

Mr Streeting's comments came at a launch for an entirely different Government announcement.

The advice emerged as organisations around the world scramble to fix a critical security flaw in the programming language PHP, used by the majority of websites.

Downing Street said no large UK public-facing critical services have been affected – but 32 Government websites have gone dark while issues are resolved.

National Cyber Security Centre experts are working with OpenAI, whose technology was used to discover the vulnerabilities, and partners around the globe to address potential problems, a No10 spokeswoman said.

Speaking at the opening of the UK Gun Hall Plant in Telford, Mr Streeting said of the message to the public: 'Are they prepared for the eventuality that there may be disruption to essential supply chains caused by hostile state actors or terrorists?

'How would we cope if the payment systems of the local supermarket went down?

'Those are the sorts of everyday challenges and threats that we could well face, and it is right that we ask the country to be ready for those things and to ask everyone to do their bit.'

The U.S. Space Force has outlined future requirements for national spaceport infrastructure, with a focus on modernizing the Eastern and Western Ranges.

Space Systems Command said Tuesday that Brig. Gen. Eric Zarybnisky, the Space Force’s portfolio acquisition executive for space access, released the vision and requirements document, which covers range architecture, operations and business practices.

The U.S. Space Force is planning range modernization to keep pace with growing launch and test demands. The Potomac Officers Club’s 2027 Defense R&D Summit on Feb. 4 will examine advanced space technologies, defense innovation and research priorities.

How Will the Space Force Meet Its Range Requirements?

According to the document, the service may draw on a flexible mix of commercially procured services, commercial assets and dedicated government assets to fill its materiel needs.

Jacobs holds a potential $4 billion contract to provide operations, maintenance and integration support for both ranges through March 2035.

Personnel staffing and training will join process enhancements and system modernization among the lower-level requirements meant to achieve the document’s broader goals.

The document also stresses that technology and hardware by themselves will not speed up launch and test tempos. It points to the role of range personnel in areas such as telemetry and range safety.

Why Is the Space Force Modernizing Its Ranges?

Modernization priorities for launch and range operations are the focus of the release, which opens a series on the Space Access Portfolio vision and requirements.

The ranges need to keep pace with growing demand for national security, civil and commercial launch and test operations. Assured U.S. access to space and the testing of next-generation weapons systems both depend on the two ranges.

According to Zarybnisky, boosting range speed, agility and throughput has become “an operational imperative required to maintain our competitive advantage.”

Zarybnisky leads one of nine portfolio acquisition executive offices that the Space Force finalized in a June 22 memo as part of its acquisition overhaul.

On 21 October 2026, in New York, His Excellency Archbishop Christophe Z El Kassis, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, delivered a statement at the Thematic Discussion on Outer Space in the First Committee of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Archbishop El Kassis expressed concern over the growing militarisation of outer space and the development of counter-space capabilities, warning that these developments increase the risk of escalation, weaponisation and an arms race.

In particular, he stressed that the existing international legal framework does not comprehensively prohibit all types of weapons in outer space, while the destruction of satellites and other space systems could have serious consequences for essential civilian services.

In this regard, he reaffirmed the importance of the principles enshrined in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and called for renewed efforts to prevent an arms race in outer space, including through effective, legally binding measures and transparency and confidence-building measures.

He further emphasised that outer space must remain a domain of peaceful cooperation and shared responsibility, preserved for the benefit of all humanity and future generations.

Mr. Chair,

Human activity in outer space continues to expand at a remarkable pace.

Space-based technologies have become integral to communication, navigation, scientific research, and many other aspects of modern life, while offering significant opportunities for cooperation and integral human development.

Given this growing reliance on outer space, its preservation for peaceful purposes is a collective responsibility.

Outer space has also become increasingly important in economic, military and security terms. However, its militarisation poses serious risks that could jeopardise the peaceful use of space, as well as the continuity of essential civilian services.

Furthermore, the competition for strategic advantage and the development of counter-space capabilities increase the risk of escalation, weaponisation and an arms race.

In this regard, my Delegation remains deeply concerned that the international community has not yet reached a formal consensus on banning all types of weapons related to outer space.

While the existing legal framework prohibits the placement in orbit of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, it does not comprehensively prohibit other types of weapons in outer space.

This gap is becoming increasingly concerning as new capabilities are being developed that could disrupt, disable or destroy satellites and other space systems.

Such developments could have consequences that extend far beyond the space domain. The destruction of satellites could generate long-lasting debris that would endanger space activities and jeopardise the services upon which societies are increasingly dependent.

Furthermore, the prospect of warfare extending into outer space also raises serious questions regarding self-defence and the application of international humanitarian law.

Mr. Chair,

Nearly sixty years after the adoption of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, its foundational principles remain as essential as ever. Outer space must be explored and used for the benefit and in the interests of all countries, regardless of their level of economic or scientific development.

It should be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and for the promotion of the common good, rather than for the exclusive benefits of individual States or private actors, which would only lead to further strategic competition and conflict.

Preserving these principles requires renewed efforts to prevent an arms race in outer space.

The Holy See therefore continues to support progress towards effective, legally binding measures in this regard, as well as transparency and confidence-building measures to reduce mistrust and the risk of miscalculation.

Scientific and technological progress in outer space should foster cooperation among nations rather than create new grounds for confrontation.

At a time when conflicts and mistrust are already putting severe strain on the international order, humanity cannot afford to extend an arms race beyond the Earth.

Outer space must remain a domain of peaceful cooperation and shared responsibility, preserved for the benefit of all humanity and for present and future generations.

Israel Lobby Quietly Shifts Political Operation To Super PAC Under New Name

AIPAC has announced its decision to discontinue directly endorsing and financially backing candidates — but the pro-Israel lobbying group appears to remain far from dormant.

The organization will cease directly endorsing and bankrolling candidates in that manner that it has been since 2021, the group announced on Wednesday. Instead, the group will be absorbed into its sister super PAC, the United Democracy Project PAC (UDP), according to Jewish Insider.

When asked for comment, AIPAC referred the DCNF to an email from the group’s leadership with the subject line “Announcing Changes; Building a Stronger Political Operation.”

“To win the fight for the future of the country and the U.S.-Israel alliance, we must build a more strategic, consequential, and nimble political operation,” the email states in part. “We will prioritize increasing direct, organized contributions from individual Americans to candidates — expanding upon our current efforts—and maximizing the emerging political fundraising tools. Endorsements, direct PAC contributions, and earmarking will no longer be part of our approach so we can expand individual giving and utilize new tools to help our friends win.

ESA Council approves appointment of two new directors

The European Space Agency Council has approved the appointment of two new directors: Andrzej Banasiak as Director of Commercialisation and Industry Partnership, and Nicolaus Hanowski as Director of Space Operations.

ESA Member States approved the Director General’s proposals at the 350th ESA Council at delegate level taking place on 21–22 October 2026 at ESA Headquarters in Paris, France.

Director of Commercialisation and Industry Partnership

Andrzej Banasiak will take up duty as Director of Commercialisation and Industry Partnership on 1 January 2027. He will be based at ESA’s European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT) in Harwell, United Kingdom.

A Polish national, Andrzej has more than 25 years of international leadership experience in the space, defence, aerospace and high-technology sectors.

He currently serves as Safran Group’s Country Delegate in Poland and Managing Director for Safran Electronics & Defense in Poland.

He has previously held senior positions at Rheinmetall Electronics Hungary, Thales Alenia Space Polska, General Electric, Boeing and Schlumberger.

His experience spans the development and transformation of technology businesses, space industry development, commercialisation, international partnerships and industrial growth across Europe.

“Europe’s future in space will be shaped not only by what we invent, but by what we build together.

I am honoured to join ESA and look forward to working with its teams, Member States and industry to turn technological excellence into commercial success, stronger industrial capabilities and lasting European competitiveness,” Andrzej Banasiak said.

Nicolaus Hanowski will take up duty as Director of Space Operations on 1 January 2027. He will be based at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany.

A German national, Nicolaus has more than 25 years of experience in the space sector and has headed ESA’s Earth Observation Mission Management and Ground Segment Department since 2014.

His career at ESA and the German Space Agency at DLR has covered mission and satellite operations, programme management, ground segment architecture, digital transformation, space science and Earth observation.

He brings extensive strategic, managerial and technical expertise, including experience leading international teams and complex programmes.

“I am proud to take on the leadership of ESA Space Operations, where missions come to life and European expertise and capabilities are continually taken to new frontiers,” Nicolaus Hanowski said.
