China Sends Naval Forces to Monitor US Warship Near Disputed Shoal

BEIJING/TAIPEI, Oct 20 (Reuters) – China’s military said on Tuesday it had sent forces to watch a US warship that “illegally” entered waters around a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, while further north in the waterway, Taiwan reported a standoff with a Chinese vessel.

China views almost all of the South China Sea as its own territory, despite overlapping claims by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam, with recent tension most pronounced between Beijing and Manila.

The Chinese military’s Southern Theatre Command said the USS Charleston “illegally intruded” into waters adjacent to Sabina Shoal in the Spratly Islands without Chinese government approval in the early hours of Tuesday.

“The US action infringes upon China’s sovereign rights and interests, jeopardizes maritime security, and is detrimental to regional peace and stability,” it said in a statement.

“The US side should immediately cease such activities.”

China’s navy dispatched forces to track and monitor the ship, it added.

The US Navy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It generally refers to such missions as “freedom of navigation operations,” though its last known one in the South China Sea was more than a year ago.

A Philippines’ military spokesperson said the US ship “did not trespass into ‘Chinese territory’,” adding that no nation had the authority to require prior permission for “lawful transit through international waters.”

Last month, a China Coast Guard vessel rammed a Philippine boat on a refueling mission near the same shoal, according to the Philippine Coast Guard. China blamed the collision on the Philippine side.

China and the Philippines, which has a mutual defense treaty with the US, both contest sovereignty over Sabina Shoal and the entire Spratly Islands archipelago.

PRATAS STANDOFF

In a separate incident on Tuesday at the top end of the South China Sea, Taiwan’s Coast Guard said a Chinese Coast Guard ship had entered restricted waters near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands.

The Taiwan Coast Guard said its ship the “Taichung” was dispatched to warn away the Chinese boat, while both sides broadcast messages to each other.

The Chinese ship broadcast that “the so-called Republic of China does not exist,” referring to Taiwan’s official name, while the Taiwanese ship broadcast back that “the Republic of China, Taiwan, is a sovereign and independent country,” Taiwan’s Coast Guard said, adding the standoff was continuing.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The office said last week that Taiwan must “bear the consequences” of its Coast Guard using a water cannon against a Chinese fishing boat near the Pratas.

The Pratas Islands lie roughly between southern Taiwan and Hong Kong, but are only lightly defended and security is the responsibility of Taiwan’s Coast Guard.

China has also been stepping up coast guard activity around Taiwan, including off the island’s east coast, causing concern in Western capitals.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory.

Speaking at a forum in Taipei on Tuesday, the chair of a review commission appointed by the US Congress said Chinese coast guard patrols to the east of Taiwan were “highly destabilizing.”

Addressing the same event, Taiwan’s National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu said China had no legal claim to the waters off the island’s east.

President Trump on Monday gave Elon Musk a huge shoutout after he announced plans to give SpaceX shares to every child in America.

Musk has been on a tear recently after taking SpaceX public with one of the largest IPOs in history, receiving the National Medal of Science earlier this month, and showcasing the first-ever flying car with his other company, Tesla.

Musk unveiled his next-generation Tesla Roadster last week, showing a car that could fly, flip in mid-air, and go from 0 to 60 mph in under one second. “I’m very happy for Elon because I think he’s— we just gave him the science award along with five other people, and he deserves it,” Trump said after Musk’s prototype launch, noting that “we’re doing, as a country, things that nobody ever thought possible.”

As The Gateway Pundit reported, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO announced on Monday that he plans to give one SpaceX share to “every kid in America” next year under Trump’s “Trump Accounts” program.

The stock currently trades near $150 per share and is estimated by at least one analyst to soar as high as $800.

Trump responded on Monday, thanking Musk and calling him a "legendary friend."

The program, which officially launched on July 4, provides a tax-advantaged investment account for children to get a head start on saving for adulthood. A $1,000 federal pilot contribution is also available for children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, and additional benefits are available for children born in low-income areas.

The program was kickstarted with a massive $6 billion contribution by Dell CEO Michael Dell and his wife, Susan Dell, announced during the official Trump Accounts launch in July.

Since then, the program has received pledges to donate millions of dollars from Hedge fund founder Ray Dalio and his wife, Barbara, who pledged $250 to roughly 300,000 children; Altimeter Capital CEO Brad Gerstner, who pledged $250 to every child under 5 years old in Indiana; and rapper Nikki Manaj, who pledged $150,000 to $300,000 in contributions. Add Elon Musk to the list, with the largest contribution thus far, totaling up to $11 billion.

President Trump went off on Globalist European leaders during his rally in Wichita, Kansas, on Monday, accusing them of treason and threatening to leave Europe and NATO to fend for themselves.

“If you want to see what is at stake in this election, just look at what’s happening in France, a once great nation that is being conquered, looted, and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists, and communists who hate Christianity and they hate, frankly, the Western civilization itself,” he said, opening a scathing rebuke of Europe’s mass migration policies.

“And as we’re seeing in Europe, globalist left-wing politicians have treasonously imported millions and millions of third-world migrants, who are totally incompatible with the West, and they are incompatible with Western values. They despise everything about France, and they’re destroying that country. And we’re not going to let that happen to this country.”

He went on to rebuke French President Emmanuel Macron for allowing the mass importation of people who “only want to enter the welfare state paid for by hardworking citizens of France.”

But it’s “not only France; it’s Italy, it’s so many,” he said. “I could name plenty of them. They’re losing their country. They’re losing Europe. That’s never happening to the United States of America.”

“The people that came in do not love France or these other countries under attack. They don’t love the people. They don’t love the art, they don’t love the architecture of the buildings, they don’t love anything that surrounds them. They have no passion for where they are, and they never will,” Trump added.

“If they don’t soon find their way, and they have to find their way, we will have no choice but to leave. We will have no choice. It’s a very serious situation. We’re not letting it happen here,” Trump continued, noting that NATO was not there for the United States during the Iran war, despite the US spending “billions of dollars a year on NATO protecting them.”

“The Jefferson County Grand Jury has handed down indictments against three individuals in the alleged theft of about $20 million from the now-defunct Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC), Auditor of State Keith Faber announced.

The racketeering case against Michael Perik, Nicole Rowe Colclasure and Michael Geoghegan alleges a coordinated criminal scheme that diverted Pell grants and other federal financial aid and state subsidies through fraudulent reimbursements and illegal incentive payments, ultimately contributing to the closure of one of the region’s only higher education options.

“These public resources were supposed to help disadvantaged students in an area of the state where educational opportunities were scarce,” Auditor Faber said. “Instead, it appears these individuals took advantage of their positions, and students were left out in the cold.”

Perik and Colclasure each face a dozen felony counts, including engaging in a pattern of corrupt activities, aggravated theft of $1.5 million or more, theft in office, telecommunications fraud, bribery, having an unlawful interest in a public contract, receiving stolen property, and money laundering.

Auditor Faber announced the indictments Thursday during a press conference at the Ohio Statehouse alongside U.S. Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent.

EGCC was founded in 1968 in Steubenville, originally as the Jefferson County Technical Institute.Before closing for good in September 2025, it offered more than 70 associate degrees and majors and numerous certificate programs. Enrollees included families of steelworkers and high school graduates who could not afford to relocate to other campuses and workers who needed retraining as area factories closed.

SIU launched an investigation into EGCC, initially after receiving information about questionable purchasing by college officials. SIU, along with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio State High Patrol’s Computer Crimes Unit, the U.S. Secret Service, the Columbus Division of Police’s Digital Forensics Unit, and the Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center executed a search warrant in January 2024 at EGCC as part of its ongoing investigation.
