Trump slams Zelensky after Ukraine defies US president with major attack on Russia

US President Donald Trump has excoriated Ukraine’s leader after the country launched one of its biggest drone attacks on Russia this year, hitting a key oil terminalin defiance of his demand it stop hitting Russian energy infrastructure.

There have been growing tensions between Ukraine and the US in recent days, prompting fears in Kyiv it could lose essential support as it approaches another winter under relentless Russian attack.

Trump on Friday invoked a waiver exempting Russia from sweeping economic penalties mandated by the US Congress. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” the US siding with Russia would be a “historic mistake.”

In the wake of Ukraine’s drone attack overnight into Sunday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he doesn’t want to do anything that will drive Russia away from negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, adding that he believes “great progress is being made.”

At the same time, he hit out at Zelensky, saying that he “doesn’t want to end this war, and probably never did” – a claim firmly rejected by Zelensky.

“I am in the process of negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine, and don’t want to do anything that will drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table,” Trump wrote in the post Sunday.

Despite this, the Ukrainian president said he spoke to US envoy, Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner on Sunday as part of “nonstop communication” aimed at securing long-term peace.

“We are doing everything on our part to make this happen, and to ensure that America’s position is strong and helps bring peace closer,” Zelensky posted on X.

Meanwhile, news of a potential trilateral meeting between Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on ending Russia’s war with Ukraine risks escalating tensions further.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said Monday that any future meeting between the three leaders would “encourage Putin to continue this war,” after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio touted possible talks.

Rubio, who is currently on a visit to Uzbekistan, had been asked by a reporter there about a Wall Street Journal report that Putin had floated such a summit in a phone call with Trump earlier this month. He responded: “Well, I don’t know. I mean, I think there’s been talks of a meeting. I don’t know if anything’s been finalized.”

The Kremlin said Monday that “given that all three heads of state might potentially take part in the summit in China, the topic of such a hypothetical meeting was indeed mentioned.”

“However, no concrete proposals or agreements – neither regarding the meeting itself nor its potential agenda and content – have been discussed or put forward by anyone,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “I have no information to share at the moment.”

Ukraine targets oil sites

Ukraine is keeping up long-range strikes into Russia. Russia’s defense ministry said it shot down 1,015 Ukrainian drones overnight into Sunday over various parts of the country.

One target was the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, according to Russian authorities. The terminal can handle up to 12.5 million tons per year. Ukraine’s Fire Point company, which makes the drones used in the attack, said there was a fire on the terminal’s grounds following the strike.

A logistics centers in St. Petersburg was also attacked, according to Ozon, a Russian distribution company, as well as a data center for the Russian VKontakte social media platform.

One person was killed and five wounded in the attacks, with residential homes damaged as well, according to local authorities.

“They shot one down right above us: there was one bright flash, and it shook us up quite strongly,” a 41-year old resident of St. Petersburg told CNN.

“I heard a roar, got everyone out of their beds, took the cat, and we hid in the bathroom,” another said.

A deepening spat

Ukraine’s strikes come amid Zelensky’s deteriorating relationship with Trump, who last week called Kyiv’s strikes on Russian oil refineries a “disgrace.”

A week ago, Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy infrastructure, as the White House tries to relieve pressure on oil and diesel prices ahead of crucial midterm elections.

Neither Kyiv nor Moscow acknowledged such an agreement. Ukraine briefly halted such attacks, but Russia never stopped pounding Ukraine’s energy plants and cities.

Eleven people were killed and nearly 50 injured across Ukraine in Russian missile and drone attacks in the 24 hours to Sunday morning, according to Ukrainian authorities, including what they called a massive attack on energy facilities in the Odesa region.

“Since the American President announced the energy ceasefire a week ago, Russia has deliberately attacked Ukraine’s energy and oil and gas sectors ⁠76 times,” Zelensky wrote on X Sunday.

Trump has waived sanctions on imports of Russian diesel and on Friday invoked a waiver exempting Russia from sweeping economic penalties mandated by the US Congress, sparking criticism even from Republicans.

In an interview Sunday with “Meet the Press,” Zelensky said the waiver strengthened Putin’s war against Ukraine while Moscow was failing on the battlefield. He also repeated that the Ukrainian military’s access to the Starlink system to guide its short-range and battlefield drones was still curtailed.

“It was a message from the American government” to limit the speed at which Ukrainian drones could fly, Zelensky said.

The Trump administration has denied it ordered the service restricted.

No early warnings

Zelensky said that intelligence sharing had been blocked by the US side for three days during ballistic missile attacks but had since been restored. In response, Rubio said: “I don’t know where (Zelensky’s) getting these things from or why he’s saying these things to the press. You should go back and ask him. There’s been no pause.”

US satellite networks have been critical in providing the Ukrainian military with warnings of incoming missiles.

According to Zelensky, Ukraine received no early warning before a ballistic missile attack multiple times within the last week. “Another Russian ballistic missile attack came in several waves overnight, and once again, there was no early warning from our partners,” he posted on X Monday.

He also reaffirmed Kyiv’s commitment to a long-term peace deal. “Ukraine never wanted this war, and we have welcomed literally EVERY attempt by our partners to bring this war to a dignified end,” he said.

In his Sunday interview, Zelensky was also asked about Trump’s comments that he was more difficult to deal with than Putin and replied it was “better to have partners who are very open and clear than to have those who are killers, even with a smile on their face.”

Zelensky said he wanted to trust Trump and hoped he would change his attitude to Putin.

Asked if Trump was an ally of Ukraine, Zelensky said: “I hope so.”

Immigrants from Ukraine and Sudan to retain deportation protections for now

Immigrants from Ukraine and Sudan enrolled in the Temporary Protected Status policy will be able to live and work in the U.S. without fear of deportation for the time being, even though their protections were set to expire soon, the Department of Homeland Security told CBS News on Sunday.

The TPS protections of tens of thousands of Ukrainians and hundreds of Sudanese immigrants were officially slated to terminate on Monday.

But in statements on Sunday, DHS said final decisions on the fate of the humanitarian immigration programs will "be made at the appropriate time."

Until such decisions are announced, DHS added, nationals of Ukraine and Sudan enrolled in the TPS program will "retain protection."

The decisions to keep the deportation protections in place, albeit not final, stand in sharp contrast to the Trump administration's broader posture toward TPS programs.

Trump administration officials have routinely denounced TPS as a de facto amnesty policy abused by the Biden administration that encourages illegal immigration and that has been extended too often, despite its temporary nature.

Over the past year and a half, the Trump administration, as part of its aggressive immigration crackdown, has revoked the TPS protections of more than 1 million immigrants from over a dozen countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti and Venezuela.

The programs for Ukrainian and Sudanese nationals are among a handful of TPS policies that have remained in place nearly two years into President Trump's second term, alongside the protections for tens of thousands of immigrants from El Salvador. Their TPS program was also set to lapse last month, but DHS retained their protections, pending a final announcement.

Supreme Court agrees to consider federal ban on home distilleries

The Supreme Court has agreed to weigh in on the constitutionality of an 1868 federal law that imposes a tax on distilled spirits but also bans home distilleries – that is, the at-home production of spirits like bourbon and whiskey. The penalties for violating the law include fines of up to $10,000, five years in prison, or both. In a list of orders from the justices’ Oct. 16 conference, the court announced that it had granted review in Department of Justice v. McNutt.

The justices will likely hear oral argument in the case early next year, with a decision to follow by late June or early July.

The lawsuit was filed in 2023 by a nonprofit, the Hobby Distillers Association, and some of its individual members, who want to be able to operate home distilleries. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit ruled that the ban on home distilleries violates two different provisions of the Constitution: the taxation clause, which gives Congress the power to “lay and collect Taxes … to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States”; and the necessary and proper clause, which gives Congress the power to “make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution” its listed powers.

The Constitution gives Congress the power to impose a tax on distilled spirits, the 5th Circuit determined, but it concluded that the ban on home distilleries exceeds that power. Not only does the ban not raise revenue, the court of appeals wrote, it prevents the production of spirits that could generate revenue. The court of appeals similarly rejected the government’s contention that the ban guards against tax evasion, explaining that “preventing activity lest it give rise to tax evasion places no limit whatsoever on Congress’s power under the taxation clause.”

The federal government came to the Supreme Court in August, asking the justices to weigh in. It contended that “[a] law is necessary and proper if it is ‘convenient’ or ‘useful’ for carrying an enumerated power into effect, and ‘plainly adapted’ to that legitimate end.” That is precisely what the ban on home distilleries does, the government argued. “Congress restricted home distilling because a distiller can more easily conceal a distilling operation or thwart necessary inspections—thereby evading the requisite tax—if the still is located in” a house or a structure attached to that house.

The challengers agreed that the court should grant review, although they urged the justices to leave the 5th Circuit’s ruling in place.The case, they said, “presents fundamental questions of the extent of federal power and the powers reserved to the states and the people.”

In a separate case, Ream v. Department of the Treasury, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit reached the opposite conclusion from the 5th Circuit, holding that the ban on home distilleries is a necessary and proper exercise of Congress’s power to collect the federal tax on distilled spirits. John Ream, a retired aerospace engineer and the owner of a brewery who wants to be able to distill his own spirits, then came to the Supreme Courtin July, asking the justices to weigh in on the legality of the ban and on the broader question of Congress’ power to regulate “local, noncommercial conduct.”

The federal government agreed that the justices should take up the question at the center of Ream’s petition for review, but it urged the court to grant its own petition, in McNutt, instead. On Monday, the justices did just that.

During the 2025-26 term, the justices pondered the Founding Fathers’ drinking habits as they considered a law barring habitual drug users from possessing guns. In the term ahead, they may return to the topic of alcohol in early America if they take up a case on a 19th-century law prohibiting at-home production of distilled spirits. Indeed, the court and alcohol have a long history: Here’s a brief overview of some of the court’s most notable alcohol-related rulings.

Prohibition cases

The country’s most famous drinking law, the 18th Amendment, took effect in January 1920. It barred “the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within” the United States, as well as the importation and exportation of alcohol.

During the Prohibition period, which spanned from 1920 until 1933, the Supreme Court decided several cases related to the 18th Amendment. For example, in the National Prohibition Cases, the court considered seven lawsuits brought by states and brewing companies over the constitutionality of the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act, a law passed by Congress to enforce the amendment. The court held that Congress had the authority to pass the amendment and act, and rejected, among other things, challenges to Congress’ voting process, holding that the two-thirds vote needed to propose a constitutional amendment is satisfied as long as “two-thirds of the members present” support the proposal, rather than “two-thirds of the entire membership.” The 18th Amendment, wrote Justice Willis Van Devanter, “must be respected and given effect the same as other” amendments before it.

The court also addressed the methods that police officers used to enforce Prohibition, including the circumstances under which they could search cars or fields surrounding a private residence for alcohol without a warrant. The court’s rulings allowing for such warrantless searches continue to influence Fourth Amendment jurisprudence today, according to the Federal Judicial Center.

One more memorable case from this era was United States v. Sullivan, in which the Supreme Court held that “[g]ains from illicit traffic in liquor are subject to the income tax.” The justices unanimously agreed that the Fifth Amendment, which protects against forced self-incrimination, did not protect bootleggers from having to report their income from illegal alcohol sales. According to Politico, Sullivan “formed the basis for the government’s 1931 conviction of Al Capone, who led a Chicago-based Prohibition-era crime syndicate, of income tax evasion.”

Alcoholism and the Eighth Amendment

In 1933, Prohibition – and the associated legal battles – came to an end with the ratification of the 21st Amendment, which repealed the 18th Amendment and empowered states to regulate alcohol access. This development opened the door to new disputes over restrictions on alcohol sales and consumption, including bans on public intoxication.

One such ban in Texas led to 1968’s Powell v. Texas, in which the court considered whether it was constitutional to apply restrictions on public intoxication to those struggling with chronic alcoholism. Specifically, the justices weighed whether an alcoholic’s conviction for public intoxication violated the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition on “cruel and unusual punishments.”

In a complicated 5-4 ruling, the court held that such a conviction is constitutional. Justice Thurgood Marshall explained, in an opinion joined by three other justices, that public intoxication laws punish “being in public while drunk on a particular occasion,” not the status of being “a chronic alcoholic.”

Justice Hugo Black concurred, writing that a ruling preventing alcoholics from being convicted of public intoxication could open the door to a case that recognized an “‘irresistible impulse’ as a complete defense to any crime.”

Justice Byron White did not join Marshall’s opinion but agreed with the result that the court reached. He distinguished between punishing an alcoholic for being drunk, which he believed would be unlawful, and punishing them for “being drunk in a public place,” a situation which could be avoided by drinking at home.

Justice Abe Fortas wrote a dissenting opinion, which was joined by three other justices. He asserted that convicting a chronic alcoholic violates the Eighth Amendment, because an individual who “cannot resist the ‘constant excessive consumption of alcohol’ … does not appear in public by his own volition, but under a ‘compulsion’ which is part of his condition.”

France moved Monday to put riot-hit cities under curfew after Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez admitted that authorities had lost control of the streets in several major cities over the weekend. President Emmanuel Macron refused Nuñez's offer to resign and then left for a Gulf tour to secure fuel supplies.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu told prefects to impose "very limited" and "localized" curfews. According to France 24's live coverage, Lecornu ruled out a full curfew for Paris. He said a state of emergency could be declared "if necessary," but that curfews seemed better suited, adding: "I am absolutely determined to restore order." Marseille's prefect banned protests and gatherings from noon to 8 p.m.

By Monday evening, Lecornu's office had named the first towns, all in the northern Nord department. Lille, Douai, Wattignies and Denain will be under curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday nights, with each mayor's agreement, according to Franceinfo. Lille is where Nuñez said rioters broke into city hall, and Wattignies is one of its suburbs. Lille's Socialist mayor, Arnaud Deslandes, had refused earlier in the day to sign a curfew order, arguing that a late-evening curfew wouldn't match the hours the trouble broke out. Denain was already under curfew: its mayor ordered a weeklong curfew from 9 p.m. starting Sunday, after what the town said were fires, mortar fireworks and paving stones thrown at police by hooded rioters on Saturday.

Macron's Gulf tour opened in Kuwait City on Monday, with the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar to follow by Wednesday. Executives from TotalEnergies and Engie are traveling with him to seek commitments on diesel and oil volumes, and the talks include moving pre-positioned kerosene and diesel from Oman to Réunion and Mayotte. Macron said the trip was needed to "secure our supplies," noting that demonstrators had raised fuel prices. Constitutional expert Benjamin Morel told AFP the tour could look like business as usual but might also seem out of touch and suggest a power vacuum. Francis Perrin of the French Institute for International and Strategic Relations does not expect it to move fuel prices, since Gulf states find firm commitments difficult while the region remains disrupted by the US-Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Secret Service Deputy Director Quits Amid Questions Over Ties To Drone-Defense Maker Fortem

eputy Director Matt Quinn announced his resignation from the Secret Service in an internal agency email Friday amid questions about his conflicts of interest over the agency’s counter-drone technology.

Quinn served 23 years as a Secret Service agent before retiring in 2021. He then went to work at drone-manufacturer Fortem Technologies, which sells the DroneHunter product, as a senior vice president for three years before returning to the agency last year to serve as deputy director. His last day will be Nov. 7.

As RealClearPolitics first reported, Quinn was criticized by several current and former Secret Service agents for admitting during a mostly softball Sunday CBS News “60 Minutes” interview that the Secret Service was not prepared for an attack by a drone swarm.

The piece featured a DroneHunter demonstration without mentioning several technical problems the platform has experienced. RealClearPolitics over the last 48 hours submitted detailed questions to the Secret Service about some of the statements made during the “60 Minutes” interview about the drone technology, its effectiveness, whether the DroneHunter’s purchases were competitively bid, and the agency’s track record in taking out drones.

The “60 Minutes” report did not mention Quinn’s prior work for Fortem. The Secret Service did not respond to RCP’s questions.

Even before Quinn’s announced departure, several Secret Service sources were questioning a report in a recent CBS “60 Minutes” segment that the agency used electronic jamming equipment to take down a drone at the Army-Navy game in Baltimore last December. The game was attended by the president and several members of Congress.

The sources suggest that the Secret Service is not providing the proper context about the downed drone, while raising concerns that it was most likely a friendly-fire incident.

Biggest Ukrainian Attack On St. Petersburg Since War's Start

St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, came under heavy drone attack early Sunday - resulting in huge fires over what is also the second most important civic center after Moscow.

An oil depot and oil export facility suffered direct hits, despite President Trump multiple times making it known that he's vehemently opposed to such attacks, given the diesel supply crisis.

One person was killed and at least five more were injured in this latest long-range drone wave, Aleksandr Beglov, the governor of St. Petersburg, announced on Telegram. He also added that a dozen apartment buildings and two private residences suffered damage in the attack. A large bridge was also targeted.

Extensive blazes have been observed at the Petersburg oil terminal and the Ruchyi oil depot, and industrial warehouses in the Kolpinsky District. Some 20,000 residents in the area were also left without power after a pair of electrical substations were hit. State media later updated the number of injuries to at least ten.

Albania on fire: who’s behind the riots?

Tirana is burning and Prime Minister Edi Rama is pointing his finger at anyone but himself

Anti-government rioters have torched Albania’s education ministry and supreme court, as protests spread across the Balkan nation. Prime Minister Edi Rama is refusing to step down and blames the unrest on Russia. What’s really going on?

As of October 19, the Albanian capital of Tirana has been rocked by seven consecutive days and nights of rioting, while protests and clashes between demonstrators and police have been reported in the cities of Lezhe, Vlore, Elbasan, and Shkoder. A large group of rioters breached the perimeter of the education ministry in Tirana on October 14, setting the building on fire.

Running battles between demonstrators and police have broken out around the ministry on several occasions since. On October 19, hundreds of demonstrators pelted rocks at riot police, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. The previous night, offices of the Albanian Supreme Court were set on fire, and arson attacks on several police stations in the city were reported.

Some 500 demonstrators had been detained and 167 of them formally arrested as of October 17, according to Reuters. 295 people had been injured, including 196 police officers, as of October 19, according to Interior Minister Ervin Demo.

What do the protesters want?

The protests follow more than a year of unrest in Albania, which began when Rama banned TikTok in the runup to last March’s parliamentary elections, following similar measures inposed by the EU during every major election across the bloc since 2024. The ban was lifted in February of this year, but demonstrations broke out again in May after Rama’s government authorized the sale of protected wetlands to a development company operated by US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

The protesters’ core demand – that Rama resign – remains unchanged. However, the movement is now calling for a root-and-branch reform of the entire Albanian establishment, with demonstrators accusing both Rama and opposition leader Sali Berisha of corruption. Unemployment, underfunding of schools, and declining living standards have also been cited by protesters as grievances.

What did Rama say about the protests?

Despite the repeated chants of “Rama resign” heard at the protests, Rama has claimed that the demonstrators do not oppose his government, but Albania’s “mission” of joining the EU.

“I am not being challenged,” he said in a video address on October 18. “The government is not being challenged, a government majority or a winning party in the elections is not being challenged but a path is being challenged, a mission is being challenged”

Israel prepared to attack Iran without US – Netanyahu

The Israeli prime minister has pledged to overthrow Tehran’s government and made striking first a central principle of his security doctrine

Presenting his security doctrine in a speech on Sunday, Netanyahu argued that Iran would rebuild its nuclear and military capabilities as long as its government survived and made clear that Israel was prepared to launch further attacks without waiting for American participation.

“If we need to act alone, we will act alone,” he said.

Netanyahu presented Israel’s earlier campaign against Iran as a model, recalling that he told US President Donald Trump he would attack Tehran “either way” and invited American participation in a strike on the Fordow nuclear facility.

He framed further action against Iran as unfinished business, explicitly identifying the overthrow of the country’s government as the ultimate objective. “We are working on it and we will do it,” Netanyahu said.

Despite Tehran repeatedly stressing that its nuclear program is peaceful and denying seeking nuclear weapons, Netanyahu once again claimed that the US-Israeli attacks had prevented Iran from acquiring an atomic bomb intended to destroy Israel.

Netanyahu framed the renewed strikes as part of a broader doctrine prioritizing attack over defense. He compared striking first to gaining the advantage in childhood street fights and said Israel could establish bases far beyond its borders.

“We will have to live by our sword in order to live for many years,” he said.

He also described plans to seize and destroy what he called threat centers in the occupied West Bank, listed preventing Palestinian statehood as a fundamental principle, and included disrupting military and “civilian systems” in his deterrence strategy.

The spacecraft will also study the Martian system with other tools, including the LIDAR laser altimeter, the Circum-Martian Dust Monitor, the Mass Spectrum Analyzer, and the Interplanetary Radiation Environment Monitor.

Besides the instruments built into the spacecraft, MMX will also release the European-provided IDEFIX rover to the surface of Phobos.

IDEFIX, named after a dog in the famous French comic Asterix, will be the first rover ever to land on a moon other than Earth’s own companion, and also will be the first rover ever to attempt to operate on a small body with limited gravity.

The rover will try to demonstrate that it can operate in a low-gravity environment, and it is equipped with cameras, a radiometer, and a Raman spectrometer.

MMX will use two sampling tools once it lands on Phobos. The corer sampler (C-SMP) will drill more than two centimeters into the moon’s surface to gather core samples using a robotic arm and an actuator that employs a special shape-memory alloy.

The pneumatic sampler (P-SMP) will work alongside the C-SMP to collect regolith from the surface.

The P-SMP is yet another example of international collaboration on this Japanese-led mission, as it is provided by NASA and Honeybee Robotics, a company that is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Blue Origin.

Honeybee Robotics has extensive experience in building tools for planetary missions, having developed tools for the Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity Mars rovers as well as the Mars Phoenix lander.

Once MMX enters its QSO with Phobos, it will spend over one Earth year scanning the moon, including a search for safe yet interesting landing sites, and will release IDEFIX to the surface before MMX itself lands on Phobos.

The probe’s two landings on Phobos will occur no earlier than December 2028, and it will spend just two to three hours on the surface collecting samples. The mission’s target is to collect at least 10 g of material from Phobos.

The samples will be returned to Earth in a sample return capsule, which will land in Australia in 2031. MMX will likely be the first ever mission to return to Earth from the Martian system, and the probe will leave Mars with its samples in 2030.

The samples could also become the first ever to arrive on Earth from the Martian system, though China is planning the Tianwen-3 Mars sample return mission to return to Earth around 2031 as well.

MMX is not the first mission to attempt to land on Phobos, or even to return samples from the moon.

The Soviet Union launched the Phobos 1 and Phobos 2 probes in 1988; Phobos 1 lost contact during interplanetary cruise, but Phobos 2 successfully arrived at Mars in January 1989.

However, controllers lost contact with Phobos 2 in late March just before it was planned to land on Phobos’ surface.

Over two decades later, Russia attempted to return to Phobos with a lander-and-sample-return mission based on the Phobos 1 and 2 probes.

The Phobos-Grunt probe launched to low-Earth orbit in 2011, but its upper stage failed to ignite, preventing the probe from reaching Mars. Phobos-Grunt ended up reentering Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in a destructive end.

MMX aims to succeed where these past missions failed. Scientists hope that the samples brought back from Phobos will answer whether the Martian moons were captured asteroids or were formed when a large body impacted Mars, as Earth’s Moon is thought to have formed.

The samples could also tell scientists a great deal about the early Martian system’s evolution, especially since Phobos’ surface is thought to be covered with material ejected from Mars by meteorite impacts.

If this is true, the samples could contain direct evidence of conditions — including water and biosignatures — on the Martian surface.

MMX is not Japan’s first sample return mission. JAXA has experience landing and retrieving samples of the asteroids 25143 Itokawa and 162173 Ryugu with its Hayabusa probes.

The first Hayabusa probe returned less than a gram of material from Itokawa in 2010, whereas Hayabusa2 returned 5.4 g of material from Ryugu in 2020.

The MMX launch is the third of 2026 for the H3, and the only launch to Mars during this year’s window, which recurs every 26 months.

While MMX studies the Martian moons and, secondarily, the planet itself, a number of missions from different agencies to the Red Planet are planned for the coming years, including ESA’s Rosalind Franklin rover, NASA’s SR-1 Freedom, and Tianwen-3, all currently scheduled to fly in 2028.
