Biden Judge Halts Paramount’s $110 Billion Warner Bros. Discovery Merger After California and Blue-State Coalition Sues to Kill the Deal

U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín, a Biden appointee, issued a temporary restraining order Monday blocking Paramount Skydance’s roughly $110–111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

The two-week pause comes after California Attorney General Rob Bonta and a coalition of 11 other mostly Democrat state attorneys general sued to stop the deal, claiming it would somehow harm competition, raise prices, and reduce choices for movie theaters and streaming customers.

Bonta’s coalition includes Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Washington.

The judge sided with the states, citing “compelling evidence” on market share. A hearing on a longer injunction is set for August 3 in Oakland. Paramount now faces the real risk of missing its September closing deadline and triggering penalties.

The coalition of states claims the merger would create an entertainment giant with excessive market power, leading to higher prices, fewer choices for consumers, and reduced competition in film distribution and cable television.

Paramount has rejected those claims, arguing that the lawsuit relies on an outdated view of the modern media landscape and ignores intense competition from streaming giants such as Netflix and Disney.

The legal challenge represents the most significant obstacle yet to Paramount’s effort to combine with Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal would unite major brands including CBS, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., HBO, CNN, Paramount+, HBO Max, and numerous cable networks under a single corporate umbrella.

As The Gateway Pundit reported just last week, Paramount was already seriously considering packing up and leaving California entirely over Bonta’s relentless efforts to torpedo the merger.

Advisers were urging CEO David Ellison to move the company’s headquarters and reallocate tens of billions in planned spending outside the Golden State after Bonta’s lawsuit dropped.

Recall the sequence. Paramount Skydance won the bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year after Netflix walked away. Shareholders approved the deal. Multiple international regulators signed off. Critically, the U.S. Department of Justice under the Trump administration cleared the transaction. Yet that wasn’t good enough for Rob Bonta and his fellow blue-state attorneys general.

Atty. Gen. Bonta spent nearly half a million on attorneys. His political consultant explains why

California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta spent nearly half a million dollars in campaign funds last year on personal attorneys to represent him as he spoke to federal investigators about alleged corruption in Oakland.

Bonta paid about $468,000 to law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati last year from his 2026 reelection campaign, according to campaign finance disclosures filed with the state.

Bonta political consultant Dan Newman said the attorney general was approached by federal investigators because he was viewed as a “possible victim” in the alleged corruption case involving a former Oakland mayor and Bay Area business owners.

Newman said “the sole role was to assist by providing information that would be helpful to the investigation.”

“This was all completed in 2024, over a year ago, and the AG’s involvement is over,” Newman said.

Bonta’s payments to the legal team were first reported by Sacramento’s KCRA-TV.

The U.S. Department of Justice in January charged former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao in an alleged bribery scheme involving local businesspeople David Trung Duong and Andy Hung Duong.

Thao ran for Oakland mayor in 2022 and was recalled from office by city voters in 2024 after growing voter frustration over crime and the city’s budget woes. She was arrested in early 2025 by the FBI.

According to the indictment, Thao, then a mayoral candidate, engaged in a quid pro quo scheme with the Duong brothers in which she promised to take official actions as the mayor to help their recycling and modular homes businesses.

The Duong brothers and Thao have pleaded not guilty.

The San Jose Mercury News reported in January 2025 that campaign finance regulators had also been closely scrutinizing Andy Duong. The Duong family viewed Bonta as a political ally, according to the newspaper.

Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2021 selected Bonta, then an Assembly member representing the Oakland area, as the attorney general to serve the remaining term ofXavier Becerra, whom President Biden nominated to become the U.S. Health and Human Services secretary.

Bonta has emerged as a key player in California’s battle against President Trump, filing dozens of lawsuits against the Trump administration.

Bonta eventually returned $155,000 in campaign contributions from the Duong family after the federal investigation became public, according to multiple news reports.

Newman, Bonta’s consultant, said that the attorney general was ultimately found not to be a victim in the case. When asked why so much money was spent on attorneys, he said that multiple lawyers worked over a period of several months.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – There was something off about the yellow house on Gallardo Street. Teenage boys came and went. Inside, a makeshift pub served fans of the local fútbol club before they filed into the stadium down the street. The house had orange and black stripes, tiny security cameras that twitched like eyes, and, over the entrance, a colorful mural of palm trees and late-model trucks.

One day a neighbor informed authorities that the house was filled with children living in "inhumane conditions." Police set up a raid, bringing along a small army of social workers, psychologists, city inspectors and medics. When they got inside, the house was dark and quiet, the morning light filtered by newspaper taped over the windows. The rooms smelled of moldering laundry, teenagers and cleats.

ESPN followed one boy's journey through Argentina's professional soccer system, uncovering widespread exploitation and abuse. "The Dream Factory" is streaming on ESPN, available on YouTube and will air on ESPN2 on Tuesday, June 30, at 9 p.m. ET.

Three dozen boys, ages 12 to their early 20s, were living in the one-story house. The landlord was a stocky man who went by the nickname El Zurdo, or Lefty. He told police he was the guardian for every boy and had the papers to prove it. "I'm not their biological father, but I'm their father," El Zurdo would later say. When the inspectors asked him for permits, he couldn't produce any.

The boys were herded into the dining room for questioning. Among themselves, they knew that there wasn't enough food at times and that El Zurdo could be temperamental. But they didn't tell that to the adults who had come to check on their welfare. They all dreamed of becoming professional soccer players, the heirs to Lionel Messi and the reigning World Cup champions, and that dream lived with them inside the yellow house.

Two years later, in April 2025, I visited Gallardo Street, on the gritty western edge of Buenos Aires. By then I'd heard many stories about the system that produces world-class soccer players in Argentina. Some used words like "cruel" and "ugly" to describe it. One mother explained how her son was forced to survive on chicken carcasses and rice laced with black bugs. Another mother handed me an audio recording of her pleading with a club owner to turn in the coach who molested her son.

"This happens everywhere," the owner says on the recording. "I've seen this on five different teams."

The house on Gallardo was supposed to be closed. After the raid, the city issued a 10-day eviction notice, according to an investigative document. But on the warm afternoon when I showed up, I found El Zurdo standing in the kitchen, the house filled with his many children.

IN MARCH 2018, Argentina woke up to the realization that beneath the country's intense passion for fútbol was "an underworld of young people – in the custody of adults who aren't their parents," as one Buenos Aires legislator told me.

Independiente, one of the country's premier clubs, had disclosed that a half-dozen men sexually assaulted some of its young prospects. The boys lived at the team's pensión, the name in Spanish for a dormitory used to board players as young as 10. The pedophiles had treated the pensión as a kind of pond in which they fished for young victims.

Like many people in Argentina, the lead investigator in the case, María Soledad Garibaldi, had never heard of a pensión for young futbolistas. She and her colleagues interviewedsome 50 boys. Nearly all had been "groomed" or illegally lured by men over social media; more than a dozen had been sexually abused, she found.

Garibaldi noticed a consistency to the players' backgrounds. Most had traveled great distances from Argentina's interior, where a quarter to a third of the population lives in poverty. They were unpaid for their labor, isolated inside the pensión with only their teammates and their dreams. The predators sensed how to exploit these conditions. One 15-year-old said he was lured to perform sex acts in exchange for bus fare so he could travel home for Mother's Day.

Dr Rainer Zitelmann doesn't even remember posting the meme on social media that nearly landed him in prison.

"When I opened the letter from police, I thought it was a misunderstanding," Dr Zitelmann, a German historian and author of about 30 books, told The Telegraph.

Berlin police told Dr Zitelmann he had been accused of violating a post-Second World War law that bans the display of Nazi symbols, slogans and imagery – and could now face three years in prison if found guilty.

The 69-year-old found out the offending social media post was a meme about Adolf Hitler. But it was one in which he criticised the Nazi dictator and compared his invasion of Czechoslovakia to Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

"It was crystal clear the post was negative … I was saying that Putin is so bad he is like Hitler," he explains from his study in Berlin, surrounded by hundreds of books about the rise of fascism, including his own doctoral thesis. "The comparison only works if you think Hitler was evil."

He lets out an ironic chuckle at the absurdity of it all: after decades of excoriating the Nazis in his books, a mere click of a mouse led to accusations of him being one.

Dr Zitelmann is one of thousands of Germans who have been threatened with fines or prison sentences for social media posts that fall foul of the country's political speech laws, which are unusually stringent for an EU member state.

Some of the cases are sinister and farcical in equal measure.

One German had his home raided for calling a minister a "Schwachkopf [dummy]" while another was fined €2,000 (£1,700) for calling Friedrich Merz a "lying Fritz" under a law that, critics claim, makes it effectively illegal to make fun of politicians.

The number of investigations under Section 86a, the Nazi symbols ban that Dr Zitelmann was investigated for, has more than doubled over the past decade according to official police statistics. Investigations into the "political insult" law also reached record levels in 2025.

The surge in cases is so vast that the UN has launched an investigation into free speech violations in Germany, a step typically reserved for dictatorships and banana republics.

German free speech activists on the Left and Right, as well as the Trump administration, have also raised the alarm and there are growing calls for some of the country's stricter laws to be scrapped.

The furore bears some similarities to the free speech debate in Britain, where citizens have had a knock on the door from police over opinions posted online.

Alternative for Germany (AfD), the Right-wing populist party topping the polls, has seized on the free speech row as a sign, in its eyes, that the country faces its biggest crackdown on free speech since the rise of the Nazis.

The hard-Right party made the stark claim in an interview with The Telegraph as it faces growing calls to be banned in Germany because of its strident views on mass migration and sympathies for the Kremlin.

Germany's security services are also under scrutiny for their recent decision to classify the AfD as an extremist group, while The Telegraph has learnt that the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), the domestic spy agency, is amassing files on German activists linked to the Trump administration.

Germans 'denouncing' each other through Stasi-style portals

In the case of Dr Zitelmann, the rise of online "portals" in Germany, which allow citizens to report each other for illegal comments, seems to be what alerted police to his social media post.

"We have dozens of these portals now, where you can go and denounce people for something they said," says the historian, who recently branched into fiction with a dystopian novel titled 2075 – When Beauty Became A Crime.

"I hate this sort of thing. It is typical for totalitarian countries and you are seeing it everywhere now."

The portals, he claims, are reminiscent of Germany's dark authoritarian past when citizens would denounce each other to the state for personal gain or out of an obsession with obedience.

He would like to see Section 86a abolished, but not because of its misuse against him. Rather, he fears the ban on displaying extremist symbols has simply pushed Germany's estimated 50,000 neo-Nazisunderground.

"The only way forward is to abolish these kinds of laws. I don't want them to do this in secret: I want to see my enemy," he says, alluding to neo-Nazis as well as anti-Semites on the extreme Left.

"I also hate to see anti-Israel German demonstrators holding 'from the river to the sea' placards," he says. "But I am against banning them for the same reason: I want to know who they are."

Threatened with jail for calling chancellor 'Pinocchio'

Another controversial law in Germany's free-speech debate is Section 188 of the criminal code, which imposes a de facto ban on publicly insulting or defaming elected officials.

In 2021, the government toughened up the law, which has roots in the Weimar period, to lower the threshold for prosecutions in response to a wave of violent threats and harassment against politicians.

It has since evolved into a Frankenstein's monster that has led police forces across the nation to investigate Germans for making fun of their leaders.

In one recent case, a pensioner was investigated under Section 188 for posting "Pinocchio is coming" on Facebook, after he learnt Friedrich Merz, the chancellor, was visiting his hometown.

The tongue-in-cheek post was accompanied by a long-nosed Pinocchio emoji, as the chancellor faced criticism for reneging on key campaign promises in the 2025 election.

The case was dropped after the story caused an outcry in Germany, and police have since clarified that calling the chancellor Pinocchio is not a crime.

In November 2024, police in Bavaria raided the home of another pensioner because he called Robert Habeck, the then vice-chancellor of Germany, a "schwachkopf", or dummy.

The raid was reportedly launched after Mr Habeck personally filed a criminal complaint against the pensioner.

Prosecutors eventually dropped the investigation after deciding that the insult "dummy" was not of "sufficient weight" to merit criminal charges.

While such cases might seem like bizarre outliers, there are plenty of others.

'Biggest free speech crisis since WW2'

Germany has defended the presence of such laws because of its unique responsibility to prevent a return to Nazi fascism.

But one party, which has been hounded for years by accusations of extremism, has seen an opportunity to generate political capital out of the spate of bizarre police investigations.

AfD argues that the rise of a new "thought police" is part of a deeper crisis in Germany's post-war democracy.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Martin Hess, the AfD's interior affairs spokesman, said the police investigations were meant to deter Germans from pointing out how dysfunctional their country had become after decades of centrist leadership.

"In my opinion, this country has lost control over internal security, and this in turn has led to citizens quite rightly expressing their displeasure in strong terms," said Mr Hess, alluding to mass migration over the past decade, a recent string of terror attacks committed by asylum seekers and the country's economic decline.

"When a normal citizen wants to express his anger to a politician, he will say, you're an idiot – that's how he expresses himself, and he should be allowed to do so, that's democracy," he added.

"The country's leaders have noticed the discontent is growing, and are trying to prosecute people for those insults down to the municipal level."

The former police officer said he saw a worrying parallel between the rise in prosecutions in recent years and Germany's darkest era, adding: "Democracy is under massive pressure and freedom of speech is being restricted on a level not seen, in my opinion, since 1945."

Mr Hess backed calls for the "political insult" law to be scrapped, but said it was important that Holocaust denial and incitement to hatred against Jews remain criminal offences because of the country's role in the Second World War.

Why Germany's most popular party could be banned

Founded in 2013 as a eurosceptic movement, the AfD has surged from a fringe party to what some now see as a government-in-waiting.

As of last February's federal elections, it is the de facto opposition in the German parliament and now leads the polls, far ahead of Mr Merz's ruling Christian Democrats.

To its supporters, the AfD is only the party that speaks for Germans who are sick of mass migration, political correctness, economic stagnation and the creep of so-called wokeism.

But to its opponents, including many in the government, civil service and intelligence services, the party is a far-Right menace that was recently classified as an extremist groupby the country's equivalent of MI5.

The BfV has been monitoring senior AfD figures through methods such as wiretapping and informants for at least five years.

The Telegraph has learnt that the BfV's surveillance programme was recently expanded to include grassroots supporters of the AfD who are close to the Trump administration and Elon Musk.

'I made friends with Elon Musk, now Germany spies on me'

Documents seen by The Telegraph show that the BfV has amassed a vast file, numbering in excess of 1,000 documents, on Naomi Seibt, a 25-year-old activist.

Ms Seibt, who first came to prominence as a German "anti-Greta" climate change sceptic, has since forged a close political friendship with Mr Musk via his X platform.

She said the friendship had begun when Mr Musk messaged her after seeing her social media content praising the AfD. He wanted to know why the party was facing constant accusations of extremism.

After Ms Seibt explained the AfD's central values to Mr Musk, he began retweeting her posts to his 240 million followers, exposing her to an audience nearly three times the size of the German population.

Ms Seibt alleges she later received a tip-off that she had been placed under surveillance by the BfV and submitted a request to disclose the data they were gathering on her – and why.

In the BfV's response letter, which The Telegraph has seen, the agency said it held more than 1,000 documents on Ms Seibt and could not provide more precise details on security grounds.

The activist believes the agency monitors her because the Trump administration, which used to employ Mr Musk as an adviser, has grown hostile towards Mr Merz's government.

"Apparently, they were terrified of me becoming something of a bridge between AfD supporters in Germany and the American Maga movement," she said.

Rubio Targets ICC as U.S. Law Rejects Court’s Jurisdiction Over Americans

The United States fought a War of Independence beginning in 1775 to become an independent nation, a full year before the Declaration of Independence was even drafted. Today, we are a federal republic in which citizens vote directly for their legislators and, through the Electoral College, for the president. No unelected authority in Europe should ever have sovereignty over the United States. Neither Brussels, Geneva, nor The Hague should be able to dictate the actions of U.S. citizens within U.S. borders or direct American foreign policy.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on July 13 that the United States would dismantle the threat posed by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to US sovereignty. The announcement came in a State Department release, a video statement, and a Wall Street Journal op-ed in which Rubio wrote that the US would “dismantle the ICC”, “brick by brick, if necessary,” using “all the tools at our government’s disposal.”

The State Department said the campaign will feature a “whole-of-government response” to systematically disable the ICC’s ability to operate, target American service members or officials, or otherwise threaten American sovereignty. The statement said the ICC “poses an intolerable threat to US sovereignty” because it claims authority to prosecute American servicemen and officials, and noted that all American presidents since the court’s founding have maintained that the ICC lacks jurisdiction over Americans.

Concrete steps outlined by the State Department include travel bans and visa revocations for ICC personnel, increased sanctions on the court and affiliated organizations, and pressure on allied nations to withdraw from the Rome Statute or cut off support for the court. The Wall Street Journal op-ed also said Washington would watch closely which nations join it against the court, and that countries relying on the US security umbrella are being called on to reject the ICC’s authority.

The US has never ratified the Rome Statute, the 2002 treaty that created the ICC. The American Servicemembers’ Protection Act of 2002, passed under the Bush administration, already authorizes the use of US military force to free American or allied personnel detained by the ICC, a provision sometimes called the “Hague Invasion Act.”

The first Trump administration sanctioned the ICC prosecutor in 2020 over the court’s investigation into alleged crimes in Afghanistan involving US personnel, according to Just Security.

Human rights organizations have pushed back on the campaign. Former Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth said the effort was an attempt to “dress up” what he called a quest for impunity for American war crimes. A joint statement signed by national human rights organizations on July 17 called the campaign an attack on international rule of law and urged other states to defend the court, an independent judicial body created to prosecute genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.

The ICC has not opened any investigation on US soil. Rubio’s op-ed specifically named Democracy for the Arab World Now, an organization that has called for legal examination of US deportations to El Salvador and US military strikes, on Iran.
