The Perseids may dominate the headlines, but six lesser-known meteor showers will offer skywatchers more opportunities to catch shooting stars throughout the summer.

The Perseid meteor shower is widely regarded as the highlight of the Northern Hemisphere’s summer sky, drawing thousands of observers every August. Yet it is far from the only celestial display worth watching.

Throughout July and August, Earth crosses multiple streams of cosmic debris that generate several lesser-known meteor showers, each offering its own combination of bright fireballs, slow-moving meteors, and unique viewing opportunities.

Six Meteor Showers Extend The Summer Stargazing Season

While the Perseids often receive the most attention, the summer meteor calendar actually begins much earlier.

Starting in early July, Earth encounters debris left behind by ancient comets and asteroids, producing a succession of meteor showers that remain active well into late August.

Most of these displays generate fewer meteors than the Perseids, but they compensate by extending the observing season and occasionally producing exceptionally bright fireballs that can rival those seen during larger showers.

The first to appear are the Capricornids, active from around July 10 through mid-August. Their hourly rates are modest, usually only a handful of meteors each hour under excellent conditions.

Their real appeal lies in the brightness of some of their meteors, which can produce striking fireballs crossing the southern sky.

Shortly afterward come the Delta Aquariids, one of July’s strongest showers, capable of producing several dozen meteors per hour under ideal dark-sky conditions.

Their meteors tend to be faint and travel at moderate speeds, though a small percentage leave glowing trails that linger briefly after passing.

Observers can also watch for the Piscis Australids, another relatively weak shower that peaks near the end of July. Although their activity is limited, they add to the overall number of meteors visible during the season.

The Alpha Capricornids, peaking on July 31, are especially popular among astrophotographers because of their tendency to generate brilliant yellow fireballs despite producing only a few meteors per hour.

Moonlight Will Shape The Best Nights For Viewing

One of the biggest factors affecting meteor observations is not the showers themselves but the brightness of the Moon.

According to Space.com, several of this year’s late-July meteor showers coincide with a nearly full Moon, washing out many of the fainter meteors that would otherwise be visible.

The Delta Aquariids, Piscis Australids, and Alpha Capricornids will all face significant interference from moonlight during their expected peaks.

That does not necessarily mean these showers should be ignored. Meteor activity extends for days or even weeks before and after maximum activity, allowing observers to choose darker nights when lunar interference is reduced.

Even during periods of bright moonlight, the largest fireballs can remain easily visible, particularly under clear rural skies with little artificial light pollution.

The situation improves dramatically by mid-August. The Moon will have little impact during the Perseid maximum, creating some of the best observing conditions in recent years.

This favorable alignment gives skywatchers an excellent chance of seeing dozens of meteors each hour during the shower’s peak while also enjoying activity from overlapping minor streams.

NEW RECORDS: Arizona School District Ignored Safety Policies And Allowed Hundreds of Students to Leave Campus for Anti-ICE Protest Without Parental Consent

Today, America First Legal (AFL) released internal documents it obtained after suing Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) in Arizona to force compliance with AFL’s public records request for records related to a January 2026 FUSD student anti-ICE walkout. The documents reveal that FUSD officials knew about the walkout days in advance, discussed it with students, encouraged students to attend, and intentionally ignored multiple district policies so that students could attend and return from the protest.

FUSD’s own policies are clear:

Policy 5-103 outlines that a child “between the ages of six and sixteen is required to attend school during the school’s hours” and that “the student’s parent/legal guardian is required to notify the school regarding the student’s absence.” It also states that “the school… shall make a reasonable effort to promptly telephone and notify the parent/legal guardian or other person… of the student’s absence from school.” Despite that, FUSD staff allowed hundreds of students to leave school without first receiving parental consent.

Policy 3-401.D dictates that “the Superintendent shall limit access to school buildings and grounds.” Yet FUSD staff discussed leaving school doors propped open so that students could return after attending the protest.

Procedure 3-503.A explains that district “personnel or others acting on behalf of the District may act as advocates… but only as private citizens, during non-duty time outside the classroom or other instructional settings, using their own or other private resources.” Yet FUSD staff helped students plan the protest, and one teacher even directly encouraged students to attend it.

Additionally, multiple FUSD school-level policies make it clear that no student is allowed to leave school property without prior parental notification or consent:

Coconino High School: Parents must call the attendance office before students may leave the school.

Flagstaff High School: Students cannot leave the school at lunchtime unless a parent has called in advance.

Summit High School: Students must attend school during the school day unless they are excused by a parent or a person authorized by a parent.

In preparation for the walkout, the principal of Sinagua Middle School circulated student walkout protocols, including that staff would “take attendance as usual” and that “if a parent or guardian calls a student out, the attendance office will handle the absence using standard attendance codes.” (Student walkouts are not listed as an excused absence code.)

Internal emails and text messages uncovered by AFL show that FUSD officials and staff knew students planned to walk out at least two days in advance, failed to communicate with parents, failed to notify every school in the district, and failed to follow the district’s own security policies, which require parental consent for students to leave campus.

Moon landing conspiracies have been reignited online once again, as NASA celebrates the 57th anniversary of Apollo 11.

This historic mission took place on 20 July 1969, and saw Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first people to set foot on the moon.

Since then, only 10 others have followed suit, bringing the total number of moonwalkers to just 12.

Taking to social media, many sceptics have used the anniversary as an opportunity to spout their weird and wonderful conspiracies.

'It remained at 12, because that's how you keep the lie from getting out,' one X user said.

Another added: 'Apollo missions were fake. They never walked the moon,' while one simply stated: 'News flash the moon landing was fake.'

Unfortunately for these conspiracy theorists, there are three key pieces of evidence that prove NASA's Apollo 11 mission was real.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, scientists say we simply have to look at the scientific equipment astronauts left behind, the 380kg of rock they brought back, and the 8,400 publicly available photos they took while they were there.

1. Equipment on the moon

When the Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon in 1969, the astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin did not leave the lunar surface as they found it.

Every NASA mission to the lunar surface has left behind a trail of abandoned landers, rovers and various pieces of scientific equipment.

Although these are difficult to see from Earth, more recent missions have confirmed that they are still there.

In 2011, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mapped the moon in the highest resolution ever, creating hundreds of terabytes of images.

The orbiter has photographed three Apollo landing sites – Apollo 12, 14, and 17 – with an unprecedented level of accuracy.

In the photos of the Apollo 12 landing site, you can even see the astronauts' footprints, which have been perfectly preserved in the wind–less lunar surface for decades.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Dr Greg Brown, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, said: 'This imagery has been independently verified by institutions across the world, and not just by NASA and the USA.

If that wasn't convincing enough, you could look at the data from the pieces of scientific equipment astronauts installed.

Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, and 16 all installed lunar seismometers to measure how impacts from asteroids travelled through the lunar rock.

This data was key in developing our understanding of the moon's composition and formation.

But, most importantly, Apollo 11 installed a piece of equipment called the lunar laser ranging retroreflector array, which is essentially a large mirror.

'These are still used today to determine the precise distance to the Moon by bouncing laser light off of them and timing the beam's return,' says Dr Brown.

'It is these measurements that revealed that the Moon is moving very slowly away from the Earth at around the rate your fingernails grow!'

A person is in custody on suspicion of throwing an incendiary device Monday morning at a federal building in New York City – an incident that caused minor injuries to several people – officials said.

The incident happened at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan – a building that houses offices for government agencies including the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement – the FBI said.

The device is believed to consist of fireworks and a flammable liquid, according to separate law enforcement sources, citing a preliminary assessment by investigators. It is not clear whether the device hit the building, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the incident said, but video shows law enforcement officers emerging out of a heavy plume of smoke outside the building.

Details about alleged motive weren’t immediately released. The man in custody was carrying a pellet gunand anti-ICE material, according to two law enforcement sources, with one source identifying the material as an anti-ICE poster. He was pulling a cart containing two rifles, additional fireworks and other miscellaneous items that were discovered inside the cart, a law enforcement source said.

At least three people suffered minor injuries, according to the New York Fire Department. Two refused medical attention and another was transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The man accused of throwing the device also suffered minor, non-life-threatening injuries, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

“What occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza this morning was deeply disturbing,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said. “I’m relieved no one was seriously injured and that a suspect is in custody. My team is in touch with the NYPD and we will support the federal investigation,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.

Police are looking into the man’s background to check for any criminal history in New York City or any encounters with police involving mental illness, according to a law enforcement source.

“Our administration will continue to ensure that every New Yorker is safe in their city – and hold accountable any who threaten that,” the mayor said.

UK Terror Police Admit ‘No Evidence’ for Charges over Supposed Far-Right Plot on Islamic Event

The Metropolitan Police have announced that it has found “no evidence” to charge anyone in connection with a widely reported alleged far-right plot against an Islamic event in Suffolk.

Last week, Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) shut down the UK Ijtima event at Shrubland Hall at the Barham country estate in Suffolkover a potential threat against the Muslim gathering, which drew thousands of people.

Thirteen people were arrested throughout the week amid claims of a potential extreme right-wing plot against the Islamic event, while police conducted raids on properties and vehicles, seizing dozens of electronic devices in the process.

The story was quickly seized upon by the left-wing Labour Party government, with outgoing Prime Minister Sir KierStarmer declaring that he would “not tolerate any attacks on our Muslim communities, or any form of anti-Muslim hatred.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said that the police response had “undoubtably saved lives”.

“I know this is deeply concerning news for British Muslims,” she wrote on X.“We must stand against hatred and we must unite around our shared belief in a country that is open, generous and tolerant to all our communities.”

However, over the weekend, the Met revealedthat it had not found evidence to charge any of the suspects with a crime in connection with the supposed plot.

One of those arrested has been charged with two counts of possessing an offensive weapon, extendable batons and a stun gun. Yet,police said this was separate from the alleged plan to attack the Islamic event.

On Saturday, eight men were released from custody without charge, while one had been released on bail with conditions pending further enquiries.This came after four others were released without charge earlier in the week.

The announcement from the Methas resulted in some questioning the validity of the initial story, with Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice even suggesting that the arrests may have been made to distractfrom the alleged murder of Brexiteer Ann Widdecombe days earlier.

“So what really happened here? Everyone released, no charges.Was it real, or a deliberate diversion tactic away from the alleged horrific murder of Ann Widdecombe? With a suspect reported to be from the far left?”Tice questioned.

“Counter Terrorism need to update us all urgently,” he added.

In a statement, Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said: “This has been a fast-moving investigation after we became aware of information to indicate there was a potential threat towards the Islamic event over the course of last weekend.

“Since then, we have made extensive enquiries, but at this time, we have found no evidence to support anyone being charged with any offences linked to the alleged threat.

“While I know this may still be very concerning to the public and particularly to those in the Muslim community, I want to reassure them that our enquiries are ongoing. Should we identify any potential offences or threats to the public then we will not hesitate to take further action.

“I want to reiterate my thanks to the event organisers and to the local community in the area for their continued support and understanding as our investigation continues.”

Scientists discover nearby super-Earth is leaking helium into space, revealing its atmosphere

The researchers think that the planet has hosted its atmosphere for over 3 billion years, which makes it a compelling target for future studies.

For the first time, astronomers have detected an atmosphere on a rocky, Earth-like planet lying in the liquid-water habitable zone of a nearby red dwarf star.

The planet, called LHS 1140 b, drifts around the star just 48 light-years from Earth and is the strongest evidence to date that Earth-like planets with the potential to support life can exist outside our solar system.

The findings of the study have been published in the journal Science.

"An atmosphere is essential for a planet to support life as we know it," said lead author Collin Cherubim, who recently earned his Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard University, in a statement.

Theoretical models have long predicted that atmospheres of rocky planets can protect the surface from ionizing radiation, make the presence of liquid water possible, and regulate the climate.

But while large, gas-rich exoplanets have been found to have atmospheres, cooler rocky planets have been a different story altogether.

Firstly, the overwhelming size and brightness of the stars they orbit make detection difficult. One way around this problem is to study planets orbiting red dwarf stars, which are much smaller and much dimmer.

However, such dim stars are more active than Sun-like stars and emit high-energy radiation that causes detectable atmospheric escape from closely orbiting planets.

As a result, most small rocky planets observed have either revealed themselves to be airless or to have atmospheres too weak to be detected.

As for LHS 1140 b, Cherubim and his colleagues came up with a theoretical model that predicted that the planet has a helium-rich upper atmosphere that is slowly leaking into space.

To test their prediction, the team used the Warm Infrared Echelle (WINERED) Spectrograph mounted on the Magellan Clay telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. The team observed that LHS 1140 b transited its star on the same night as another planet, which is rare.

Their analysis showed no sign of atmosphere on the other planet, but LHS 1140 b revealed a clear signal of helium escaping into space—exactly what the model had predicted.

"Twenty years ago we wondered whether other terrestrial-type planets even existed," said Robin Wordsworth, Gordon McKay Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering and Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard and one of Cherubim’s dissertation advisors.

“Then we learned they're common, and found some in the habitable zone. The next question was whether any of them had managed to keep an atmosphere. Now we know at least one has."

The researchers estimate that LHS 1140 b has possibly retained its atmosphere for more than three billion years, suggesting remarkable long-term stability that makes this planet a compelling target for future investigations.

Cherubim also plans to find out the full composition of the planet's atmosphere and uncover whether it has surface oceans.

Capitol agenda: Johnson’s rocky sprint to recess

A packed schedule could change if Speaker Mike Johnson can’t tamp down multiple flare-ups of frustration in his ranks.

Four days remain until House lawmakers are scheduled to leave for summer recess, but GOP leaders are in the opposite of vacation mode.

This week’s packed floor schedule includes: the annual defense policy package; a bill to fund the government beyond the midterms; a budget resolution to unlock the reconciliation process; and a GOP-led stock trading ban measure.

All that could change, of course, if Speaker Mike Johnson can’t tamp down multiple flare-ups of frustration in his ranks.

We’ll be watching if Johnson has appeased hard-liners with Tuesday’s Judiciary markup of border security legislation,after they froze all business on the House floor for weeks, including the defense policy bill(more on that below).

President Donald Trump’s renewed pressure campaign topass the SAVE America Act elections bill and more deaths of U.S. service members in the Iran war may also shift some Republicans’ political calculus this week.

Here’s what we’re watching for the floor:

—NDAA: House Rules meets at 2 p.m. Monday on the must-pass annual defense policy bill, Leo Shane III and Connor O’Brien write in.

Johnson will allow a series ofsocially conservative floor amendments to win over hard-liner votesas Democrats signal more opposition to the usually bipartisan bill.

On Friday, House Armed Services ranking member Adam Smith flipped and sayshe now plans to oppose the National Defense Authorization Act on the floor.

Should it pass, though,the defense bill will be merged with the SAVE America Act, although the Senate is likely to sweep away those provisions along with many of the hard-liner amendments.

—GOVERNMENT FUNDING:Johnson wants the Houseto pass a “clean” government funding bill that would float federal operations until Dec. 4— hoping to instigate a staredown with Democrats after two record-breaking shutdowns this Congress.

The gambit, however, risks alienating members of his own party who want the partisan elections overhaul bill attached to all legislation.

But so far hard-liners, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris,are signaling they’ll let it slide this time.

Harris warned Mia, though, that “if Democrats want to shut down the government,” then it’s time to play hardball and fund the TSA, FAA and military salaries through reconciliation.

—BUDGET RESOLUTION: Leaders are putting a $95 billion fiscal blueprint on the floor thatincludes a watered-down version of the elections billas well as Iran war and farm aid funds.

Rep. Thomas Massie told us last week he’s “probably a no” on the resolution, and Rep. Warren Davidson hinted he and others could tank the effort —though Davidson cautioned there’s still “a lot of time” to make a deal.

Deficit hawks are irked the bill wouldn’t be entirely paid for, though, and ultraconservatives don’t love that the SAVE America Act isn’t included in full.

—STOCK TRADING: Republicans will likely have to rely on their own members to get this GOP-led bill over the finish line. And,GOP leaders are planning to link it to a separate measure that would implement stricter voter ID lawsmany Democrats have opposed.

What else we’re watching:

—RON JOHNSON FACES A ROCKY BUDGET REALITY: Sen. Ron Johnson is jumping directly into a legislative trainwreck. The Wisconsin senator cut his teeth as a fiscal hawk willing to irritate his own party in pursuit of his deficit-shrinking dreams.Now Johnson is assuming an out-sized role in advancing the latest GOP reconciliation billfollowing former Budget Chair Lindsey Graham’s unexpected death. That means Johnson will have to reconcile his penchant for being a squeaky wheel from the sidelines with his new responsibility as chair to craft an agreement on a massive spending bill that leadership can sell to skeptical colleagues.

—HARD-LINERS GEAR UP FOR JUDICIARY BORDER MARKUP— House GOP hard-liners are getting ready to cash in on a promise made to them earlier this month by Johnson in exchange for their support for allowing floor business to proceed.House Judiciary is planning a Tuesday morning markup of a GOP immigration bill, which will contain pieces of a sweeping bill introduced in the prior Congress as H.R. 2. Still, moderate and senior Republicans are cautioning the legislation doesn’t have the support to pass the chamber.

Moon Day focuses growing concerns around space junk

Amid surging lunar exploration, the UN on Monday urged governments to ensure that humanity's return to the Moon does not come at the expense of planet Earth – or the long-term sustainability of space.

“Decades of rapidly expanding space activity have shown that each launch leaves an environmental footprint, and it can take a long time to understand the impact fully.

This is why it is so crucial to consider the sustainability of these programmes early on,” said Jason Jabbour, Senior Officer at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

Why this matters

Space debris is rapidly increasing around Earth.

Satellite pollution may affect the atmosphere and ozone.

UN treaties promote responsible exploration and debris reduction.

Protecting space helps safeguard life and ecosystems on Earth.

Although international agreements are in place to avoid contaminating outer space, an estimated 140 million pieces of debris larger than one millimetre now orbit Earth.

Most of these are too small to track but they remain capable of damaging satellites and spacecraft.

But environmental concerns extend beyond the risk of collision.

Satellite constellations

Defunct satellites eventually re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, where they release metals such as aluminium, lithium and copper. Scientists are studying whether these materials could affect atmospheric chemistry, cloud formation and the ozone layer.

Detachable rocket sections also contribute to the problem. Some remain in orbit for years before breaking apart or falling back to Earth, while others fragment into thousands of pieces.

Hundreds of tonnes of spacecraft and rocket bodies are estimated to re-enter the atmosphere each year, a figure that’s expected to increase as satellite constellations grow.

Smaller mission-related objects – including bolts, lens caps and protective covers – also add to orbital congestion, while repeated collisions and explosions create microscopic particles that scientists believe are already increasing the brightness of the night sky.

Enduring risk

Although most spacecraft burn up during re-entry, larger heat-resistant components can survive the journey, posing risks to people, infrastructure and marine life.

The Moon has fascinated humanity for millennia, inspiring mythology, science and navigation while quietly shaping life on Earth through its powerful gravitational influence.

Marking International Moon Day on 20 July, the United Nations is highlighting not only the importance of Earth’s closest celestial neighbour but also the environmental challenges accompanying a new era of space exploration.

Moon’s life-giving role

From nearly 400,000 kilometres away, the Moon generates tides that oxygenate coastal waters, transport nutrients and help sustain rich marine ecosystems, including the Great Barrier Reef.

Scientists say understanding the Moon also offers vital clues about the origins and evolution of the wider solar system.

Interest in lunar exploration has surged in recent years.

Earlier this year, NASA’s Artemis II mission carried four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon as part of plans to establish a long-term human presence on its surface during the 2030s.

China, India, Japan and several private companies are also pursuing ambitious lunar programmes. But as activity in space expands, so too does concern over its environmental consequences.

The concept of space sustainability calls for exploration and activities beyond Earth to preserve the space environment for future generations.

Protection launchpad

Building on those commitments, UN Member States have adopted guidelines to limit the creation of space debris by reducing unnecessary waste, preventing explosions, avoiding the deliberate destruction of spacecraft and safely removing retired satellites and rocket stages from orbit.

Under the 1972 UN Liability Convention, launching countries are responsible for damage caused by their space objects on Earth, including launches conducted jointly by multiple countries.

To address these emerging risks, UNEP and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs are working together to strengthen scientific understanding of the environmental impacts of space activities and to ensure environmental protection is embedded in future space governance.

As humanity prepares for a sustained return to the Moon, the UN says safeguarding space and Earth's environment must remain central to the next chapter of exploration.

Twice in a row: SpaceX rocket aborts launch at last second again

That's two last-second launch aborts in a row for SpaceX.

One of the company's Falcon 9 rockets tried to loft 24 Starlink internet satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California this morning (July 20), but the attempt was aborted just as the first-stage engines started firing up.

Something similar happened on Thursday afternoon (July 16), when SpaceX attempted to launch the 13th test flight of its Starship megarocket.

The two events likely have little in common other than a proximity in time. They involved two very different vehicles, after all: The workhorse Falcon 9 is the most reliable and active rocket on the planet; it has already launched 84 times this year, with zero failures.

Starship, on the other hand, remains in the development-and-testing phase. SpaceX has high hopes for the giant vehicle, which combines full reusability with unprecedented brawn. (It's the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built.)

The two vehicles are also powered by different engines. The Falcon 9's first stage employs nine Merlin 1Ds, whereas Starship's Super Heavy booster uses 33 next-gen Raptors.

SpaceX decided to swap out two of those Raptors ahead of the next Flight 13 launch attempt, which is scheduled for Thursday afternoon (July 23).

The Vandenberg Starlink launch, meanwhile, is back on the docket for Tuesday morning (July 21).

It's scheduled to lift off during a nearly four-hour window that opens at 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT; 7 a.m. local California time), according to a SpaceX mission description.

British businesses, universities and researchers will receive access to more than £62 million in government funding to develop homegrown space technologies, boosting the UK’s national resilience and helping protect its independence in a strategically vital sector.

New figures show the UK Space Agency’s Accelerator programme has already backed 289 founders and helped raise more than £102 million contributing to early-stage business growth

The funding – unveiled on Monday 20 July at Farnborough International Airshow by Space Minister Liz Lloyd – will support new satellite communications systems and space innovation projects, helping turn early-stage ideas into commercial products, strengthen the UK’s ability to monitor and protect assets in orbit, and build a more resilient domestic space sector.

Building domestic capability in these areas is vital to strengthen the UK’s national security, economic resilience and ability to act confidently on the world stage.

Today’s funding puts that ambition into action. It will help UK innovators build the satellite communications, space security and commercial technologies that strengthen Britain’s competitiveness, resilience and security.

New figures from the UK Space Agency show that pipeline is already expanding. Its Accelerator programme, which works with new space companies to help them attract investment, develop their technologies and win customers, has supported 289 founders and helped raise more than £102 million in investment.

Space Minister Liz Lloyd said:

Space is not just a scientific frontier, it is a strategic one. If we do not build national capabilities at home, we become overly dependent on others for technologies we cannot afford to be without.

That is why today we are announcing £62 million for satellite communications and space innovation, investing in the British businesses and researchers who will make that capability real.

This funding will help develop new satellite communications technologies to keep remote communities connected, capture a growing market for on-orbit manufactured products and strengthen our ability to monitor and protect assets in orbit, while supporting the next generation of space innovators turning early-stage ideas into commercial products.

At least 85 UAVs were neutralized on approach to the Russian capital, Mayor Sergey Sobyanin has said

At least 10 people have been injured in a Ukrainian drone raid on the Russian capital and its surrounding region, including three Chinese citizens, Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov has said.

On Monday morning, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that more than 400 UAVs had been launched toward the city and its suburbs overnight in one of the largest raids on the region to date.

Russian air defenses detected the incoming UAVs between 8:30 PM on Sunday and 5 AM on Monday, Sobyanin wrote on social media. Most were intercepted far from the capital, while another 85 were destroyed as they approached Moscow, he said.

“Most were neutralized by air defense forces at distant approaches. Eighty-five UAVs were destroyed on approach to Moscow,” the mayor said, adding that emergency crews were working at sites where debris had fallen.

Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov later said 10 people, including one child, were hurt in the drone attack. Six have been hospitalized in Domodedovo, including three Chinese citizens, he said, adding that some of the patients suffered shrapnel wounds and fractures.

Two women were injured in Podolsk, while an 11-year-old girl in the Odintsovo district was diagnosed with an acute stress reaction but did not require hospitalization.

The main consequences of the raid were recorded in Podolsk, Domodedovo, and the Odintsovo urban district, Vorobyov said. Falling drones damaged several private homes and civilian infrastructure facilities and sparked multiple fires, he added.

In Odintsovo, a car and a private home were damaged, although no injuries were reported. In Podolsk, fires broke out and several civilian infrastructure sites were damaged, along with a private home in the village of Maloye Tolbino.

Separately, Acting Bryansk Governor Egor Kovalchuk said one person was killed and 13 others were injured in attacks launched by “Ukrainian terrorists.”

In an interview with RT, Stanislav Krapivnik, a former US Army officer, said that Ukraine is unable to effectively attack Russian military and key industrial targets due to increased air defenses, opting instead to “go after softer civilian economic targets and civilians themselves.”

The latest attack followed several massive Ukrainian drone raids on Moscow and its suburbs last week.

Sobyanin said that 1,892 UAVs had been launched toward the region between July 11 and 18, with most intercepted at long range and 207 destroyed closer to the capital.

During one overnight attack alone, more than 370 drones flew toward the Moscow Region.

The same wave of strikes hit two logistics centers operated by the Russian online retailer Wildberries in Kotovsk, Tambov Region, and Elektrostal, near Moscow. The attacks killed eight people and injured dozens more, according to regional officials.

Wildberries, often called the Russian version of Amazon, is one of the country’s most popular online retailers. Kiev confirmed that it had deliberately targeted the warehouses, claiming they stored components used in drone and navigation equipment.

Ukraine has sharply intensified its long-range drone campaign in recent weeks, targeting oil facilities, warehouses, residential buildings, and other infrastructure deep inside Russian territory.

Moscow has described the raids as terrorist attacks on civilians and says its retaliatory strikes are directed at Ukrainian military and defense-related facilities.

Germany’s prolonged energy crisis was caused by the loss of Russian gas supplies, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has admitted.

German industry has been hit particularly hard by soaring energy costs, which are now the third-highest in the world after those in the UK and Japan. Once Europe’s industrial powerhouse, Germany abandoned cheap Russian gas imports in 2022 while phasing out nuclear power in favor of renewables, driving up production costs and accelerating the decline of energy-intensive industries. Moscow has repeatedly said it remains ready to resume gas deliveries through the remaining string of the Nord Stream pipeline, but the offer has received no response from Berlin.

In an interview with ZDF on Sunday, Merz was responding to questions over unfulfilled campaign promises and low public trust in his government. The chancellor argued that Germany now faced “completely different”circumstances, citing the Ukraine conflict, the “challenge” posed by China, and the country’s “ongoing energy crisis due to the lack of Russian gas.”

Germany is facing renewed pressure from soaring fuel costs following the resumption of the US bombing campaign against Iran. Diesel prices jumped 6.7 euro cents within hours on Sunday to €2.30 per liter, adding €3.35 to the cost of filling a 50-liter tank, Bild reported on Sunday. “A trip to the gas station is once again a shock,” the outlet wrote.

Before Germany’s self-imposed Russian energy embargo, Russia supplied 55% of the country’s natural gas imports. Germany now sources its gas from Norway (44%), the Netherlands (24%) and Belgium (21%), with American liquefied natural gas (LNG) accounting for most of the remainder.

Despite the mounting pressure, the EU has ruled out returning to Russian gas. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in March that the bloc would maintain its phaseout even in the event of physical shortages or the threat of power cuts.

Brussels has pledged to end all Russian gas imports by 2027. Russian LNG under long-term contracts, which currently accounts for around 14% of the bloc’s imports, will be banned from January 1, while pipeline gas imports will cease on September 30. Member states will also be required to verify the origin of gas before approving deliveries, with purchases under new short-term LNG contracts already prohibited.

Earlier, Merz told Der Spiegel that Germany’s era of prosperity was over and that maintaining the country’s current standard of living would require painful changes. He argued that Germans had yet to grasp the scale of the global shifts reshaping the country.

The German economy contracted in both 2023 and 2024, its first back-to-back annual decline in more than two decades, and is forecast to grow by just 0.5% this year. Corporate insolvencies also rose by more than 22% in each of those years, according to official data.

Manufacturing has been hit particularly hard, especially the automotive sector. BASF, Bosch, Volkswagen, and more than a dozen other German manufacturers have closed factories since 2022. In June, Volkswagen, the country’s largest automaker, announced four plant closures and up to 100,000 job cuts.
