The Trump administration on Monday announced it is seeking to revoke the citizenship of 17 U.S. citizens accused of immigration fraud, expanding its unprecedented denaturalization campaign.

CBS News exclusively reported about the plans before they were unveiled by the Justice Department.

Officials said the move represents the largest-ever effort by the U.S. government to use its denaturalization powers, which were rarely invoked before President Trump returned to the White House last year with promises to launch a historic deportation blitz. Between 1990 and 2017, the Justice Department filed an average of just 11 legal complaints per year seeking to denaturalize American citizens, historical figures indicate.

Federal law has long allowed the government to try to denaturalize foreign-born U.S. citizens who officials believe committed fraud to obtain their citizenship, such as by concealing information, like criminal conduct, on their immigration applications. But the process has been historically lengthy, complex and seldom exercised, requiring officials to persuade judges to strip naturalized citizens of their citizenship in civil or criminal proceedings in federal court.

The Trump administration has sought to vastly escalate denaturalization efforts as part of its larger crackdown on illegal and legal immigration. In 2025, the Justice Department broadened the categories of naturalized citizens who should be prioritized for denaturalization.Last month, officials announced a dozen denaturalization cases, at the time the largest such effort in years.

Some of the 17 citizens targeted in the latest denaturalization campaign were convicted of violent or serious crimes, including sex offenses against children. Others were convicted of fraud crimes or accused of committing immigration fraud.

In federal court complaints filed across the country in recent days, Justice Department officials argued that the individuals concealed their criminal activity when they applied for U.S. citizenship or were otherwiseineligible to be naturalized, including because they lacked a "good moral character," one of the requirements in the naturalization process.

Those targeted in the latest round of denaturalization cases include a Haitian immigrant who allegedly sexually abused his daughter; a man from the former Yugoslavia convicted of sexually abusing a child under the age of 15; an immigrant from Mexico convicted of receiving sexually explicit images of minors;a former Catholic priest born in Colombia accused of child sex abuse; and a Filipino-born man who pleaded guilty to a child sex crime.

The group also includes an Indian immigrant accused of filing fraudulent H-1B visa petitions; the daughter of a Colombian drug trafficker accused of money laundering; a man born in Jamaica convicted of wire fraud; and a Cuban-born woman accused of defrauding a tribal casino. Other naturalized citizens were accused of using false identities.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the Justice Department would have "zero tolerance" for abuse of the naturalization process.

"Criminal aliens are lying about their past crimes, including drug dealers, sexual predators, and fraudsters," Blanche said.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the Trump administration would "continue to use every lawful avenue to denaturalize and remove aliens."

"American citizenship is a privilege, and it must be earned honestly. If you come here, break our laws, and lie in your immigration proceedings, you forfeit that privilege," Mullin said.

The denaturalization process allows the targeted citizens to challenge the government's filings to try to retain their citizenship. If U.S. citizens are denaturalized, they return to their prior immigration status, typically as permanent U.S. residents, and lose all the legal benefits of American citizenship, including protection from deportation.

This is fake non of them are real like running for like office. This is how could I vote in a primary so on or for anyone not knowing anything about them in any way.

I do believe he is up for election Ed Case so on this is real and I feel intimidated to not vote at all by these people. It is not him ED or anything but this going on now in all ways ok.

I am not saying this to say they are bad person but this is the thing it is a national race so on that I would be voting on and I will not be voting because this shit is going on and I do not feel safe in this state with what is going on and this being done.

That is now the reality it and also the place I live be still legally in my ownership as they do all of this now. This makes no sense in any sense of the matter of speaking.

The European Union’s ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, has reiterated that the EU does not support the resettlement of irregular migrants or refugees in Libya, rejecting what he described as ongoing misinformation campaigns surrounding the issue.

In a post on X following a meeting with Libya’s acting Foreign Minister, Taher Al-Baour, Orlando stressed that Libya, like all sovereign states, has the right to determine who may legally enter its territory and to cooperate with regional and international partners in combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

Days of intense military training exercises at empty buildings have Southern California on edge

A series of military exercises taking place in empty buildings across the Southland are scaring residents and rattling neighbors as the sound of gunfire rings out in the dark and troops descend from helicopters.

Multiple nights this week, the sounds of simulated urban warfare have erupted in the middle of the night in parts of sleepy Pasadena and Long Beach and in an empty mall in the San Gabriel Valley.

As some residents went to bed, video showed a helicopter thundering across the sky as soldiers jumped onto the roof of an empty hospital in the middle of a tree-lined residential neighborhood in Pasadena Wednesday night.

Officials have said they've been given little notice and had no say on where or when the exercises would take place.

"People are trying to sleep," said Rick Cole, a Pasadena City Council member in a video posted on Instagram late Wednesday as the training continued in the background. "This is going to go on for a while and good luck to the people who have to get up and go to work tomorrow morning."

The operation, at the vacant St. Luke Medical Center in the 2600 block of East Washington Boulevard, included simulated gunfire, flash grenades and a military helicopter that hovered over the building.

Police were told by the military about the training and asked officers to provide security around the abandoned hospital months ago, a city spokesperson told The Times. But city officials were not given details about the operation, and were not able to notify the public until hours before the training began.

"It's troubling and disappointing the federal government would not provide the leadership of this city information to share with our constituents, particularly because the same neighborhood was significantly impacted by the Eaton fire," Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo said.

Asked what the city knew before the drills, Gordo said police had been informed of activity but not the scope and significance. He noted that the drills were taking place at locations scheduled to host Olympic events.

A U.S. military officer familiar with the exercises told The Times the training involved "highly trained soldiers who operated in challenging situations and terrains and want real-life facilities.

"They don't train on the same cinder-block training facilities as other units," said the officer, who was not authorized to discuss the matter with the media.

Despite the notification to the city's Police Department, elected city officials said they received no notice about the training until just a few hours before it was set to begin.

"It was very generic information," read a statement from the city. "Minimal details were shared with the Police Department. The City notified the public a few hours before the exercise was to begin. The City had no control on the timing of the exercise or specific details. Our priority was the safety of the residents and vehicle traffic in the immediate area."

A notice was sent out to residents at 5:30 p.m., and elected council members were notified via text six minutes prior.

"How does this happen, and how come we didn't hear about it sooner?" Cole asked. "This was a war game in a residential neighborhood recently devastated by catastrophic fire that took place in a weeknight, in the middle of the night."

Cole said he's inquired why the City Council and the public were not notified earlier about the operation, which occurred at multiple Southern California cities this week.

The soldiers training in Pasadena, the officer said, were highly specialized operators who do training in Southern California and arrived at Los Alamitos. It is not uncommon for the units to train at defunct malls or abandoned businesses in Los Angeles County.

An official said the helicopter seen in the regional training was from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, or SOAR.

US Army preparing for first executions in 65 years – ABC News

The plan reportedly calls for the military’s four death-row inmates to be executed within 150 days of presidential approval

The US Army is preparing to carry out its first executions of death-row service members since 1961 if President Donald Trump orders them, ABC News reports, citing an internal planning document.

Trump has advocated wider application of the death penalty as a deterrent against violent crime.

ABC News reported on Saturday that the plan – known as Operation Resolute Justice – was circulated internally in February and requires the military to be ready to carry out executions “no later than 150 days from the date of presidential approval of the death sentences.”

The preparations reportedly include reviewing execution procedures and transferring the four death-row inmates from the US Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to the federal execution facility in Terre Haute, Indiana in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Army spokesperson Cynthia Smith downplayed the preparations as a “standard component of our continued planning,” noting that Trump has yet to issue a specific order, as quoted by the publication.

Last September, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said he would seek presidential approval for the execution of Nidal Hasan. The former US Army major and physician was sentenced to death for the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting that left 13 people dead and 32 wounded.

The other three army death-row inmates include Sergeant Hasan Akbar, former army cook Ronald Gray, and former master sergeant Timothy Hennis, all of whom were convicted on multiple counts of premeditated murder.

During his first term in office, the Trump administration oversaw 13 federal executions – more than in any other presidential term in modern history.

Shortly after returning to office in 2025, Trump revoked a moratorium on federal executions imposed by his predecessor, Joe Biden, in 2021.

Signal, DuckDuckGo, and NordVPN threaten to exit Canada if metadata surveillance law passes

Canada's metadata retention bill is the latest government attempt to build surveillance into the internet's infrastructure

Another day, another government attempt to force tech companies to build backdoors. This time, Canada is proposing legislation that would require companies to retain certain metadata and provide law enforcement with access to it. Predictably, many tech players have sharply criticized the proposal, with some saying they would rather leave the Canadian market than comply.

The latest version of Canada's Bill C-22 would require digital services such as internet service providers, messaging platforms, email providers, and potentially hardware companies to retain up to one year of user metadata. In addition, tech companies would have to implement mechanisms that allow authorities to obtain "lawful access" to that information for criminal investigations. Critics argue the proposal amounts to another government-mandated backdoor.

During his testimony before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, Signal executive Udbhav Tiwari said Bill C-22 would turn everyday digital tools into a surveillance network. He argued that requiring companies to retain metadata about users' communications runs counter to Signal's privacy practices.

A spokesperson for DuckDuckGo also confirmed that the company would remove its VPN service from Canada if Bill C-22 passes. NordVPN and other VPN providers have made similar statements.

Apple and Google have also joined industry warnings that the legislation could force them to weaken encryption. Last year, Apple successfully opposed a similar proposal in the United Kingdom that would have required it to build a backdoor into iCloud. The incident was the latest in a series of conflicts between the Cupertino-based company and government regulators over security and user privacy.

The primary concern is that malicious actors would inevitably discover and exploit any digital backdoor, regardless of whether it was designed exclusively for law enforcement or domestic government agencies. OpenMedia, which has described C-22 as an attempt to create a surveillance state, pointed to a late-2024 incident in which Chinese state-backed hackers compromised government-mandated police wiretap systems to steal sensitive data from AT&T, Verizon, Lumen Technologies, and other telecom providers.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said last week that C-22 will be amended so that digital service providers will not be required to break encryption. However, the requirement to retain metadata would remain unchanged.

A security researcher recently accused Microsoft of intentionally introducing a backdoor into its BitLocker encryption system and then attempting to silence them after they raised concerns. After the researcher publicized the exploit, Microsoft released an out-of-band mitigation but stopped short of confirming whether the flaw was intentional.

Illinois Investment Advisor Indicted on Federal Fraud Charges for Allegedly Swindling Clients in Ponzi Scheme

An Illinois investment advisor has been indicted on federal fraud charges for allegedly swindling at least three clients in a Ponzi scheme.

JOHN MYERS operated Illinois-based Sterling Capital Investments, LLC. From 2022 to 2025, Myers fraudulently solicited and obtained money from three victims, including a husband and wife from Michigan, based on false representations about the performance and value of the investments, according to an indictment returned Thursday in U.S. District Court in Chicago. Myers provided false documentation reflecting the investments were worth more than they were, when Myers knew the value had actually decreased due to his trading losses, the indictment states. Myers engaged in a Ponzi scheme by using some investor funds to repay prior investors, the indictment states.

Myers, 41, of Chicago, is charged with four counts of wire fraud. Arraignment in federal court in Chicago is set for June 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., before U.S. District Judge Edmond E. Chang.

The indictment was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The director explains how a childhood meteor shower, his mother's scepticism about human exceptionalism and the smartphone era have hardened his conviction that we are not alone.

Steven Spielberg has said during an interview on CBS Sunday Morning in New York on 6 June that he believes aliens 'have been here, and they are here', as he promoted his new film Disclosure Day.

The 79-year-old director linked the remark to decades of thinking about UFOs, UAPs and the wider question of whether humans are alone.

Spielberg has been circling the subject for nearly half a century through films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and War of the Worlds.

'I Absolutely Think That They Have Been Here, And They Are Here'

Asked directly on Sunday Morning whether he thought aliens had visited Earth and might still be here now, Spielberg did not hedge or hide behind the usual 'I want to believe' stuff.

'Based on the circumstantial evidence of everything that I've gathered throughout my whole life, everybody I've listened to and every documentary I've ever watched and all the testimonies in Congress that I've heard, I absolutely think that they have been here, and they are here,' he said. 'And who knows, maybe they've always been here.'

The remark came after he cheerfully admitted that, despite a lifetime of making films about extraterrestrials, he has never had a paranormal experience himself.

'Isn't that terrible?' he laughed. 'I deserve that! I deserve a sighting. Ben, I need a sighting. I mean, I'm an ambassador to these guys, and they haven't shown themselves to me? I don't get that.'

How 'Disclosure Day' Turns His Obsession Into A Thriller

The new film, Disclosure Day, is Spielberg's latest attempt to imagine what full‑blown contact would do to us.

He has called it a kind of bookend to Close Encounters, which ends with the arrival of benevolent visitors. This time, the premise is that someone decides to blow the lid off a vast, decades‑long cover‑up.

'"Disclosure Day" is about how, if somebody had the power and if somebody had possession of the entire archive of visual evidence of what's been happening for the last 80 years, what would happen if they decided to do a data dump across the entire world all at once?' Spielberg explained in the CBS interview. 'And the people who are trying to stop that data dump from happening, that is basically the core of this chase movie.'

He describes it as part chase film, part 1970s political thriller and part big‑tech conspiracy, built for an age of low trust in institutions.

The story follows Josh O'Connor as a whistleblower on the run from government officials after threatening to release proof of alien life, and Emily Blunt as a Kansas City meteorologist whose life is upended by unexplained abilities and otherworldly communication.

'The movie takes the position of the believers, or the curious, the ones that have been deeply affected by this,' Spielberg said.

He also leans into the religious shockwaves such a revelation might cause, asking on CBS: 'Is God our God only on this planet? Or is God a god for every system where there's civilisation and intelligent life, and even developing life?'

A Lifelong Fascination That Began Under A Meteor Shower

Spielberg has been circling these questions since childhood. He traces his fixation on the sky to a night in New Jersey, around the age of five or six, when his father woke him in the middle of the night and drove him to a park to watch the Perseids meteor shower.

'I remember how shocked I was,' he said. 'But I also remember seeing these points of light darting across the sky. And I just remember thinking that was one of the most extraordinary things I had ever seen.'

At home, the bathroom was famously piled high with science‑fiction magazines. 'Oh my God, because that is what my father read!

Galaxy, Analog, and Amazing Stories, those three periodicals – and our bathroom was piled high … this high with these magazines!' he recalled to CBS.

His mother, Leah Adler, pushed him to think beyond Earth. 'She always said, "Let's not be conceited to think that we're the only intelligent life in the universe," ' he told USA Today.

When he protested that humans were 'pretty smart', she would shoot back: 'No, there's got to be a lot more we can learn if we open up our hearts and minds.'

'Ultimately, my mom was a champion of encouraging me to probe the unknown,' he said.

From 'Science Speculation' To A World Drowning In UFO Footage

When Spielberg made Close Encounters of the Third Kind, he says he needed 'a lot of imagination.' He believed there was other life out there, but was not sure it had ever visited Earth. He categorised that film not as science fiction but 'science speculation.'

Half a century on, his language has shifted. Since the early 2000s, he argues, the explosion of camera phones and online sharing has changed the landscape.

'There's been more and more access to the actual visual truth,' he told USA Today. 'We're able to confirm our belief by showing what we shot on our devices to other people.

It's just become overwhelming to me that we're not alone in the universe.'

He also thinks audiences are more ready than ever for a story like Disclosure Day. 'I can't speak for the entire audience, but there are certain things that unite us,' he said.

'One of the things that unites us, one of the places we can find common ground, is our united belief that the extraordinary is possible, and the impossible is possible.

And I think UAP, UFO, the whole phenomenon is something that everybody across any spectrum – culturally, politically – can agree on,' he added.

Steven Spielberg has spent nearly 50 years putting alien life on screen, from the wonderstruck family drama of Close Encounters in 1977 to the darker invasion story of War of the Worlds.

In recent interviews with CBS and USA Today, he has been revisiting that back catalogue while promoting Disclosure Day, which opens in cinemas on 12 June and imagines what would happen if definitive proof of extraterrestrial life was suddenly dumped online for the entire world to see.
