SEATTLE — With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to kick off in fewer than two weeks, excitement in the region is building.
The Space Needle unveiled a new paint job on its roof on Friday: a giant soccer ball.
The World Cup is the most-watched sporting event on the planet, with billions across the globe tuning in to watch the tournament.
The Space Needle said in a press release that the new coat of paint is a joint project between the Space Needle and the Seattle FIFA World Cup 26 (SeattleFWC26) local organizing committee, intended to welcome fans with "something they have never seen before."
"With just days until the world arrives in Seattle, this activation captures the energy building across our region," said Peter Tomozawa, CEO of SeattleFWC26.
"The Space Needle is one of the most recognizable landmarks on the planet. Seeing it reimagined as a soccer ball sends a powerful message that Seattle is ready to welcome the world."
Crews worked 605 feet off the ground above Seattle Center to carefully apply the custom soccer ball design to the tower's sloped roof, Space Needle said.
"Throughout its history, the Space Needle has played a role in some of the most defining moments for Seattle and the Pacific Northwest," said Ron Sevart, CEO of the Space Needle.
"This project celebrates not only soccer, but the global connections, community spirit and excitement that the tournament will bring to the city."
The World Cup begins on June 11 (6/11)in Mexico City, as Mexico hosts South Africa.
Egypt and Belgium will square off in the first game in Seattle on June 15. The U.S. Men's National Team will play Australia on June 19 at Lumen Field, although the venue will be known as "Seattle Stadium" during the World Cup.
There will be watch parties all over Seattle and the Puget Sound Region, including a massive 70-foot screen and a barge in Elliott Bay.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 is targeting the launch of 21 Starlink satellites and two Starshield satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
A live webcast of this mission will begin about 10 minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX.
This will be the 10th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Twilight, NROL-172, and seven Starlink missions.
Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship, which will be stationed in the Pacific Ocean.

Both articles discuss the opposition to the billionaire tax, and major support for the Dem gubernatorial candidate Matt Mahan (hardly charting in the results, so Brin's donations there, substantially larger maximum limits for the governor race plus substantial support from his "stop billionaire tax" PAC, did not produce the desired election results).
There is no evidence Brin or other tech billionaires gave Pratt any more than the $1800 individual maximum allowed in the mayoral race (the billionaire tax fight is at the state level, not local), nor that any PAC contributed to catapulting Pratt foreward.
All of that effort on behalf of Sergey Brin and others went to move Mahan forward as a contender for CA Governor. And it failed.
The Pratt ground swell, by contrast, appears to be authentically organic.
Attempting to diminish the contagion of his passion and personal motivation and that of those who responded to someone who is finally, and boldly, and fearlessly ("nothing left to lose"), speaking their language, with what donations they could by attempting to aliign him with big money manipulators, thereby painting him as a manipulator as well, appears to be adopting the opposition's talking points.
Despite the lack of evidence, such smears have some effect on those not using common sense. Thankfully, though, more and more people are using common sense these days. So such attempted smears reveal more about the speakers thereof than the target.
Laziness and ignorance are not good excuses for friendly fire, ever.

The Intelligence Community is upstream from most visible political events, and the IC control the Lawfare operations (investigations and prosecutions) as well as the behavior of congressional representatives in both the House and the Senate. The latter part of this reality was what Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was referencing when he said, “the intelligence community has six ways from Sunday to get back at you,” should you question or challenge their power and control.

St. Petersburg has come under a major Ukrainian drone attack, according to the regional authorities, on the closing day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
More than 140 drones were downed in the early hours of Saturday morning, Leningrad Region Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said on social media. No casualties or major infrastructure damage were immediately reported.
An air alert was declared overnight and residents were warned to stay indoors. Operations at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport were suspended, with dozens of flights delayed and aircraft diverted to other airports.
The strike follows another major drone raid on the region on June 3, the opening day of the forum, which attracted participants from more than 130 countries this year.
The attack comes two days after Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky published an open letter in which he said many Ukrainians would support having drones pay “a visit” to SPIEF.
In the letter, he also called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with him to discuss a settlement of the conflict.
Responding on Friday, Putin said there is no sense in meeting at present, arguing that Zelensky’s actions have made meaningful negotiations impossible. He also criticized the tone of the message, describing it as inappropriate and insolent.
Putin reiterated that Russia is open to negotiations with Ukraine, but only if the root causes of the conflict are addressed. Russian officials have also questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy after his presidential term expired in May 2024 without a new election being held.

Russian attack hits Sumy region with guided bombs, drones; one killed

Early Saturday morning, Russian invaders launched strikes using guided aerial bombs and drones on the Sumy region, killing a man.
Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, reported this on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.
“This morning, the Russians attacked the Vorozhba community with drones and guided aerial bombs. A civilian man was killed on the grounds of his own home as a result of the enemy strike,” Hryhorov wrote.
According to him, information regarding other consequences of the enemy attack is being clarified.
Earlier, the Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that on June 6, the body of a 77-year-old woman was found in the Khutir-Mykhailivska community of the Shostka district; she had died the previous day as a result of a Russian drone attack.
“On June 6, 2026, in the Khutir-Mykhailivskyi community of the Shostka district, the body of a deceased 77-year-old woman was discovered on the site of a destroyed house,” the statement reads.
It has been established that her house was attacked by an enemy drone the day before.
Prosecutors, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, are documenting the consequences of the attack.
As reported by Ukrinform, five civilians were injured in the Sumy region over the past 24 hours due to Russian aggression.

In the event of alleged contact, the extraterrestrial signal should be rigorously scrutinized in collaboration with other investigators and verified by multiple independent orgs employing different instruments or methods.
“It is crucial to uphold the highest standards of scientific responsibility and integrity throughout this process,” they write. As initial findings could be incomplete or hard to interpret, this vetting process could take months or even years.
If the evidence of intelligent ETs is confirmed, investigators must immediately inform the public, scientific community and even the United Nations.
In general, responses to inquires should be “prompt, accurate and honest” whether or not the signature in question is confirmed to be of extraterrestrial origin or not.
At the same time, per the principles, the signal should be kept safe from interference while scientists should seek international agreements that allow said records should be kept in secure archives around the globe.
One of the most important rules of receiving a cosmic communique? Don’t engage without consulting the proper authorities, per the doc.
“Pending the outcome of such consultations, no reply should be sent,” the doc warns. “These consultations should be conducted through the United Nations and other broadly representative international bodies.”
They add, “the specific procedures for such consultations are to be outlined in a separate agreement, declaration, or arrangement to ensure a coordinated and responsible approach.”
Naturally, any announcement of alien contact is bound to prompt accusations of conspiracy-mongering.
So while ensuring transparency and honesty, organizations should also take appropriate steps to safeguard the whistleblowers from harassment, security threats and “negative professional repercussions,” per the doc.
In this vein, it’s essential be wary of social media and nip rumors in the bud to prevent the world from being thrown into flux by misinformation and false alarms.
To aid in this regard, the IAA and SETI will convene an international post-detection committee — comprising experts in science, experts, law and other relevant fields — with the goal of guiding the global reaction.
Their primary directive: to assist humanity in handling the implications of discovering that we’re not alone in the universe. It’s perhaps a relevant mission during a time when once-fringe beliefs in extraterrestrials are becoming more accepted by the mainstream.
Included in the government’s disclosure offensive were multiple recent accounts by military personnel, including footage taken by an US Coast Guard’s infrared sensor that appeared to show an object flying near a plane over the Southeastern US in April 2024.
Meanwhile, a report from a US intelligence officer detailed how he spotted mysterious “orange orbs” next to his helicopter while on a mission late last year.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that the documents and footage of the UAPs have long sparked speculation.
“It’s time the American people see it for themselves,” he said.

The long-running concerns about abuse of America’s H-1B visa program are exploding back into the spotlight after a series of fraud investigations, criminal guilty pleas, and shocking allegations from a former U.S. diplomat who claims that as many as 80% to 90% of H-1B visa applications from India contained fraudulent information or involved unqualified applicants.
The revelations come as federal and state authorities ramp up investigations into alleged visa fraud schemes that critics say have displaced American workers while enriching a network of foreign recruiting firms, shell companies, and immigration middlemen.
Former U.S. Foreign Service Officer Mahvash Siddiqui, who served at the U.S. consulate in Chennai, India, told Newsweek that many applicants submitted fake degrees, forged documents, or otherwise failed to meet the qualifications required for the highly coveted visa program.
Siddiqui described the problem as “industrialized fraud” during a recent interview discussing her experience adjudicating tens of thousands of visa applications.
“I would say 80 to 90 percent of the people that I encountered in each of the visa categories, especially the young people between the ages of 20 to 45 that had very few ties to India, were basically using the non-immigrant visa pipeline to essentially come and work in the United States and never go back home and essentially displace American workers,” Siddiqui stated.
She added that fraud is normalized in India in the same way bribery is normalized there.

Israeli Ambassador To France Accused Of 'Foreign Interference' After Election Remarks
The Israeli ambassador to France has been accused of "foreign interference" after saying he would prefer "anyone rather than Jean-Luc Melenchon" to win the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking in a television interview on Thursday, Ambassador Joshua Zarka said he would rather see any candidate elected to the Elysee Palace than Melenchon, the leader of the left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI), a strong supporter of Palestinian rights.
Zarka also added that he met last month with Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French far-right National Rally. His remarks triggered an immediate backlash from across the French political spectrum.
Manuel Bompard, LFI's national coordinator, described the comments as "blatant foreign interference".
"In a normal democracy, the French authorities should react and condemn this type of statement," he said.
Arnaud Le Gall, an LFI MP responsible for the party's international relations, said Zarka had breached the neutrality expected of diplomats.
"He's a diplomat stationed in France. He's supposed to maintain neutrality in the country where he's posted. So tell him to keep his mouth shut," Le Gall said.
The criticism was echoed by Olivier Faure, leader of the Socialist Party, who called the ambassador's comments "unacceptable interference".
"The French people will decide their own future," Faure said. "No one is surprised to see an envoy of [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu openly admitting his ties to the French far right."
Zarka's remarks also drew criticism from the right. Nathalie Loiseau, a member of the European Parliament from the Horizons party, described Zarka's comments as "clear interference in our domestic political life" and said they were "totally inappropriate" for a foreign ambassador.
During the interview, Zarka acknowledged that Israeli officials had previously avoided formal contact with leaders of Le Pen's party, but argued that the movement had changed.
"The National Front had a clear antisemitic tendency," he said, referring to the party's former name. "The National Rally has changed."

As a new documentary revisits one of the 20th century’s greatest hoaxes, the men behind the fake footage insist it was based on real events
At a time when X-Files mania was at its height, and many believed that “the truth is out there” about alien visitations to Earth, two British music entrepreneurs offered up something that was either an exposé of the biggest cover-up in human history… or the greatest fraud of the 20th century.
This was 1995, and the “world exclusive” was an 18-minute film of government officials performing an autopsy on the body of an extraterrestrial recovered from the Roswell crash site in New Mexico in 1947.
Ray Santilli and Gary Shoefield claimed to have bought the footage from a retired military cameraman and proceeded to make a fortune selling it to US television stations and then on home video as Alien Autopsy. “The whole thing just exploded around the world,” says Santilli.
Then, 11 years later, after, as Shoefield puts it, the film “had done its business”, they collaborated on a movie about their experience (also titled Alien Autopsy) – in which they were played by Ant and Dec – and, at that point, revealed in a TV interview with Eamonn Holmes that their original grainy footage had actually been shot, by them, in a flat in London’s Camden Town, and they had paid a homeless man to pretend to be the military cameraman and convince TV networks that the footage was genuine.
However, they maintained that did not invalidate its authenticity, as it was a precise reconstruction of a genuine 1947 film that had unfortunately degraded.
This bonkers tale is examined in The Alien Autopsy Scandal, a three-part documentary made by Louis Theroux’s production company Mindhouse for Sky.
By the mid 1990s, Santilli, who is talking from his home in London, had already made his name producing kitsch hits such as The Birdie Song and had befriended Shoefield (joining the video call from his home in Los Angeles), incredibly, after the latter had threatened to sue him over another novelty song – a Thunderbirds remix.
Shoefield had insisted he owned the rights to the theme tune, and that Santilli could not list the track for sale in his catalogue. Thirty-five years on, my question about it still prompts bickering between the two.
The story Santilli (who gives long, explanatory answers to each question) and Shoefield (to the point) tell today about the origins of their alien adventure is that they were in Florida offering cash in exchange for early film footage of Elvis. This was provided by an elderly ex-US Army cameraman, who mentioned he also had another film that might be of interest: about the purported mid-century UFO crash. “He told us the whole story of Roswell, which I’d never heard of,” says Santilli, who watched as the cameraman cracked open Army-branded canisters that had been sealed for 46 years.

Although he tells me he has always had “some curiosity” about extraterrestrial life, and is in no doubt about it today, Santilli’s reaction to first seeing the footage was not one of shock or spiritual epiphany. “I saw it, obviously, as a commercial opportunity.”
The cameraman wanted $100,000 in cash. It took Santilli a year and a half to raise funds, after persuading his friend, German music investor Volker Spielberg (more on his namesake later), to finance the project. Santilli returned to Florida, negotiated the cameraman down to $40,000 and left with the film.
It was only when he got back to Britain that he opened the cans, to be confronted by a strong vinegary smell and the oxidised film coming away on his hands. According to Santilli, 70, “there was barely any imagery left on the celluloid at all”.
So they did what anyone with world-changing evidence on their hands would do – they “restored” it.
This would involve assembling a small film crew to recreate a US Army tent in a desert inside a North London flat. They also had to find the correct medical instruments, a 1947 camera and original film stock, as well as make-up from a funeral parlour to apply to a latex alien figure.
Sculptor and visual effects expert John Humphreys – creator of Channel 4’s Max Headroom, billed as “the first computer-generated TV presenter”, but actually an actor under extensive prosthetics – was brought on to manufacture the alien.
Its innards were largely composed of gruesome bits of offal (their butcher is also interviewed in the documentary).
Shoefield, 66, recalls how “someone broke into the apartment, and they must have seen what they thought was a dead body in the sink and left, because nothing was actually taken”.
Santilli, meanwhile, remembers the difficulties of the clean-up. “Disposing of a prosthetic body was as difficult as disposing of a real body, with arms and legs in different bin liners in different parts of London.”
With the new “old” footage complete, the story took another turn as Santilli’s friend – and crop-circle buff – Reg Presley, frontman of The Troggs, appeared on the BBC One show Good Morning with Anne and Nick, and sensationally revealed that he’d seen footage of an “actual” alien autopsy.
Next came the selling of said footage. Santilli and Shoefield had the bright idea of securing a big-money deal with US network Fox, while offering the 18 minutes of film to other territories free of charge.
The broadcasters were told that they could make documentaries, coming to their own conclusions about its veracity, while the duo would get all home-video rights. At the zenith of the Blockbuster era, it was a canny move.
In the new Sky documentary, the figure of an $18m profit is laughed off by Santilli. Was it more, I ask. “That’s just a fairy tale,” he tells me. But did they make millions? “Whatever we did, we did well out of it.”
The duo, who were also paid for their contributions to the documentary, reject the idea that Alien Autopsy has been the most lucrative venture of their careers.
Shoefield now produces hologram concert tours of deceased stars such as Maria Callas and Marvin Gaye, while Santilli ran a distribution company that reportedly distributed 60,000 music albums.
Both still resolutely stand by their “restoration” argument. Santilli compares their efforts to a Renoir canvas or da Vinci mural that has been worked on by a contemporary conservator, insisting – with a straight face – “I don’t believe what we did was any different”.
Well, it is, I suggest. No one has ever tried to pretend that every brush stroke of The Last Supper is original, whereas they waited 11 years to reveal the truth. “We’ve always said the film was restored,” says Santilli.
“We didn’t expect the broadcasters all to come back and endorse it the way they did. That was like winning the lottery.” Shoefield says they “carefully worded” what was offered to the TV companies. “Did we highlight the fact that we had restored it at that point? No.”
Philip Mantle, a UFO researcher brought on board at an early stage by Santilli, is unconvinced by their argument, telling the documentary makers: “If I get a job to restore the Mona Lisa, I don’t do another one, where she’s blonde and got a bigger chest.”

For the defence, the series features Richard Doty, a retired Air Force special agent, and Mike Maloney, a former royal press photographer, who both state they were separately shown similar real footage in the late 1970s.
But for the prosecution, there is one of Santilli’s former video producer collaborators. Keith Bateman claims that, after Santilli returned from a prior trip to Roswell, Bateman speculatively shot an earlier version of the Alien Autopsy in 1993, which was rejected as too amateur by Santilli.
He says the “military cameraman” story only “came afterwards”.
Santilli tells me Bateman is a “scallywag” who “hijacked a good part of the story”. Meanwhile, he says the UFO community turned on them out of jealousy.
Shoefield, however, volunteers that they “did have some clips of the original [1947] film that were edited into the [1995] restoration – which just goes to show how good it was, because you can’t tell which was which”.
I am surprised he brings this up, given it was the basis for what I assumed Santilli found the most uncomfortable moment of the documentary. In the third episode, he holds up what he says are original 1947 frames, encased in plastic.
He then goes through the 1995 film with the director, Bafta-winner John Dower, pointing to the screen and saying, “Those bits of movement are inserts”. A slightly incredulous Dower responds: “You’re pointing at images of nothing, just white flashes.”
Shoefield goes further in our conversation, adamant that there were original images of aliens incorporated into their film. So has the director set Santilli up, making it look like he was pointing at a blank screen?
“No,” says Shoefield, who asserts that he and I simply saw that scene “in a different way”.
With congressional hearings on UFOs taking place in 2022 – the first time in over 50 years that witnesses had been invited to Washington to testify on the subject – the pair believe the world is only just catching up with them.
Then there is Steven Spielberg’s latest blockbuster, Disclosure Day – released on June 10 – about an alleged US cover-up of extraterrestrial life.
One of the conspiracy theories swirling around is that the film is funded by the American state as a soft launch to prepare us for the revelation of aliens.
Shoefield recalls a newspaper report that Spielberg and Michael Jackson were each “actually trying to buy [our] footage”.
“I know [Spielberg] knows about Alien Autopsy and I know he will be fascinated to see the documentary,” he tells me. Who informed him of that? “I can’t tell you,” says Shoefield.

“The IDF expresses deep sorrow for any harm caused to uninvolved individuals,” the army added.
The Palestinian Authority identified the infant as Sam Fahd Abou Haikal, saying he was fatally wounded and his parents lighly injured “after the occupation forces opened fire on them on Friday evening” in Hebron’s Tel Rumeida neighborhood.
The infant’s father, Fahd Abou Haikal, said Saturday that his wife was in critical condition.
Fahd Abou Haikal told Haaretz that his family’s car came to a full stop before a soldier standing some 10 meters (11 yards) away fired the fatal shot.

Despite hearings, classified briefings, whistleblower testimony, and document requests, lawmakers continue to encounter resistance. Current and former officials have repeatedly alleged that information is being withheld not only from the public but from elected representatives legally tasked with oversight responsibilities.
Congress can issue subpoenas. Congress can hold hearings. Congress can generate headlines. Congress cannot empanel grand juries. Congress cannot execute search warrants.
Congress cannot prosecute obstruction. Congress cannot force individuals to testify under oath under threat of criminal prosecution. A Special Counsel can.

The central issue is not whether every claim involving UFOs, reverse engineering programs, or advanced technology is accurate. The central issue is accountability. For decades, hundreds of billions of dollars have flowed through classified defense and intelligence programs.
While secrecy is often necessary for national security, the scale of black budget spending has created an environment where programs can potentially operate with little public visibility and limited oversight.
Americans are constantly told there is insufficient funding to address infrastructure challenges, reduce the national debt, modernize public services, or invest in transformative scientific breakthroughs.
Yet generation after generation, massive sums continue to disappear into classified compartments that few elected officials can meaningfully examine.
If even a fraction of the allegations being made by whistleblowers prove true, Congress may be confronting one of the largest accountability failures in American history.
The American taxpayer deserves to know whether programs funded with public money are operating within the law.
The Whistleblowers Keep Coming
What makes the disclosure issue impossible to simply dismiss is the caliber of the individuals stepping forward. These are not random internet personalities seeking attention.
They include military officers, intelligence officials, aerospace engineers, defense contractors, and government insiders who have risked their careers and reputations to publicly challenge the official narrative.

The case has drawn comparisons to the death of propulsion researcher Amy Eskridge. Before her death in 2022, Eskridge reportedly sent messages warning associates that she would never take her own life.
Her death was ultimately ruled a suicide, but questions surrounding the circumstances continue to circulate among researchers and investigators.

Taken individually, each case may have a reasonable explanation. Taken together, they create a pattern that demands scrutiny rather than dismissal.
The Potential Cost of Secrecy
If the allegations surrounding hidden aerospace programs are false, an independent investigation would finally put years of speculation to rest. If they are true, the implications are staggering.
The American public could be confronting unauthorized programs operating outside congressional oversight, massive financial misappropriation, illegal obstruction of government accountability, and the concealment of technologies capable of reshaping entire industries.

And those blackmailers will walk in and out of those congressional offices (or be on phone conversations with them) a thousand times a year for as long as that congressman is in office.
The newly elected representative quickly learns to whom they are really accountable, and it’s not you and me: the voters. It’s the lobbyists and the party machine. The voter back home is forgotten as soon as the lobbyist walks into the office with his suitcase filled with one hundred dollar bills. Of course, I’m speaking figuratively. Congressional bribery is not that easily identifiable. It comes in the form of all kinds of incentives for the procurement of the representative’s vote. And a major incentive includes almost unlimited cash to their political campaigns to make sure the representative is re-elected (or un-elected) back home for the way they follow (or don’t follow) instructions.

One officer admitted that the system largely revolves around whether someone claims to be offended.
“It works on people taking offense. So if someone is harassed, alarmed, distressed by that kind of language, then that brings us into question.”
Even more concerning, the officer acknowledged that many of these cases ultimately come down to subjective interpretations that are sorted out after an arrest has already been made.

Protesters marched through central Budapest on Friday, chanting “traitor” as they denounced Prime Minister Peter Magyar over the EU Migration Pact.
When Magyar appeared on a balcony of his Tisza party’s headquarters waving a Hungarian flag,the crowd booed and chanted “Dirty Tisza,” demanding his resignation, local media have reported. Magyar later estimated the crowd at about 1,000 people.
Demonstrators claim the Prime Minister, who assumed office last month,secretly agreed to implement the pact in exchange for billions in EU funds, speculation that intensified after he and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a political agreement on May 29 to unlock the €16.4 billion.
The funds had been frozen since 2022, when the Commission accused then-Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government of corruption and rule-of-law violations.Orban, a long-time critic of EU policies on issues such as migration and Ukraine aid, accused Brussels of political blackmail.
Critics also allege that the deal would require Hungary to build a migrant transit facility for 8,000–10,000 people near its southern border.
Magyar has repeatedly stated that Hungary “will not accept any pact or allocation mechanism” on asylum and migration. However, Hungarian media have noted he has remained largely silent on the issue in recent weeks. According to Hungary Today, one condition tied to the release of EU funds is believed to be a reversal of Orban’s opposition to the pact.
Following the protest, Magyar dismissed the demonstrators on Facebook as “frenzied, inarticulate, shouting fellow citizens,”arguing they were effectively protesting EU funds allocated to Hungary.
The pact establishes a common EU framework for migration and asylum procedures. It introduces a system of “mandatory solidarity,” under which each member state is obliged to either accept a certain number of migrants, provide operational support, or pay €20,000 ($23,000) per person they refuse to take in.
The legislation has been controversial across the bloc, with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia also rejecting the pact’s solidarity principle.
The EU has grappled with mass immigration for more than a decade, following the conflicts in Libya and Syria and, more recently, the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, which triggered successive waves of arrivals numbering in the millions.

According to the sources, the move stems from tensions between Israel and the U.S. regarding the continuation of the war with Iran, as well as concerns within the Pentagon that Israel may be seeking to monitor senior U.S. officials to obtain information about internal deliberations on the issue.
The Pentagon's Defense Intelligence Agency published a seven-page report, assessing that Israel's human and technical espionage capabilities are at a "critical level", according to NBC, citing a current U.S. official.

The newspaper reported that Netanyahu not only mis-sold Trump on the idea of quick regime change in Iran following a short “shock and awe” bombing campaign. He also identified to the White House who was going to replace Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme religious leader.
Extraordinarily, according to the Times, Netanyahu named the man for the job as former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The aim at the start of the air campaign was for Israel to kill Khamenei, then liberate Ahmadinejad from house arrest by striking the guards who were confining him.
Presumably, Ahmadinejad was then supposed to storm the citadel and seize the keys to the palace. But only Khamenei’s assassination went according to plan.
Ahmadinejad, who had reportedly been consulted on the scheme beforehand, is believed to have been injured in the Israeli strike near his home. He got cold feet, possibly suspecting he was being set up for assassination too, and went into hiding. His current whereabouts and medical condition are unknown.

What is the difference between a useful idiot and a fellow traveller? Others later became disillusioned. But for 70 years Kremlin propagandists were able to enlist a sizeable chunk of the West's intellectuals to their cause.
Compare and contrast to the kind of fellow travellers that Russia attracts today. Like a failing music hall in a blighted British seaside town, the Kremlin is reduced to desperately booking its panto acts exclusively from a Z-list of malcontents, grifters, provocateurs and convicted sex criminals.
This week, a motley crew of Westerners, all self-professed Putin fanboys and girls, appeared at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) to express their solidarity with Holy Russia. Among them were manosphere influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate, who face charges in Romania and Britain for alleged rape, actual bodily harm, human trafficking and controlling prostitution for gain.
The brothers, who deny any wrongdoing, were welcomed at the airport by a posse of beautiful young girls in traditional Russian dress bearing bread and salt while a patriotic anthem played, suggesting that the Kremlin's PR managers are not only boomers stuck in the 1980s but are also deaf to irony.
American Right-wing influencer Candace Owens was at the forum too, as was the Kremlin's favourite action hero Steven Seagal, beloved among pensioners as the star of history's cheesiest karate movies. Scott Ritter, the former UN weapons inspector and convicted paedophile, attended in his capacity as a prominent pro-Kremlin voice.
Former German chancellor and Gazprom board member Gerhard Schröder was the most senior European while the top American was Rodney Mims Cook Jr, Trump's Chairman of the US Commission of Fine Arts, best known as the impresario of the new White House ballroom. Cook attended, insisted the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia, in an unofficial capacity.
Sadly for Putin, the grand opening of the forum was disrupted by a squadron of Ukrainian long-range bomber drones which buzzed low over the city before slamming into an oil and gas export terminal. Vast plumes of black smoke billowed into the skies, clearly visible from the conference venue – though the usual air raid sirens were switched off so as not to alarm the guests. An official delegation from the Taliban, all in traditional robes, must have been disconcerted to find St Petersburg more dangerous than Kabul.
Once, Putin's pet forum attracted Wall Street banks and European leaders hoping to integrate Russia into the global economic order. This year the heads of state to attend were the presidents of Uzbekistan, Tanzania and Abkhazia – a breakaway region of Georgia recognised as a state only by Russia, Venezuela, Syria, Nauru, and Nicaragua (Tuvalu and Vanuatu withdrew their support).

Ukrainian drones target St Petersburg in attack Russia calls 'unprecedented'
Russian authorities say Ukraine has launched an "unprecedented attack" on and around St Petersburg, as the city hosts the final day of Russia's annual economic forum.
More than 140 drones were shot down over the surrounding Leningrad region, governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said, while the city's governor, Alexander Beglov, urged residents to remain indoors for the first time since the war began more than four years ago.
Ukraine's president said his forces had hit Russia's arsenals and a naval base in what he called a just response to Russian attacks.
It comes a day after Vladimir Putin told the forum there was no point in meeting Volodymyr Zelensky, who had called for direct talks on ending the war.
Governor Drozdenko said Ukraine's attacks had caused a fire at an unspecified military facility, and that residents had been evacuated. He also said buildings had sustained "insignificant" damage.
Zelensky said his country's drones had covered a distance of 1,000km (620 miles) to the St Petersburg region, targeting "the enemy navy's arsenals and a base in Kronstadt". The main outpost of the Russian Navy's Baltic Fleet is located in Kronstadt.
According to Zelensky, an oil depot 500km (310 miles) away, in the southern Krasnodar region, was also hit as part of Ukraine's "long-range sanctions" - a euphemism for strikes on Russia.
The commander of one of the Ukrainian units involved in the drone strikes told the BBC that it was very easy to hit targets inside Russia.
"We fly in Russia like it's our own territory. Almost no resistance, not hard to reach a target," Yevhen Karas, commander of the 413th regiment Raid of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, said.
These latest attacks follow Ukrainian strikes on the outskirts of St Petersburg as Putin's flagship economic forum was getting under way just days earlier.
The major forum, designed to attract foreign investment into the country, drew thousands of guests from 130 countries, including a low-key US delegation - the first for many years.
In his open letter to Putin on Thursday, Zelensky called for a ceasefire and face-to-face negotiations with the Russian leader to end the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
He wrote that it would be "wrong to simply wait" for the conflict to once again become the focus of US attention. President Donald Trump has been involved in efforts to mediate an end to the conflict, but the war with Iran has recently taken precedence.
Speaking at the economic forum on Friday, Putin refused the request for a meeting with Zelensky and reiterated his position that a truce would only allow Ukraine to regroup.
He said he would only end the war when Russia's goals had been met.
Russia's long-standing position is that Ukraine should withdraw from the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions it has largely seized, as well as abandon efforts to join Nato.
Ukraine has refused to give up any territory, arguing that concessions to Moscow would embolden it to invade again in the future.
In his message on Saturday, the Ukrainian president said it was "time to end this war", but accused Russia's leader of wanting to "keep fighting".
Zelensky is expected to visit the UK on Sunday, for talks with some of Ukraine's staunchest European allies - Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron.
In the Russian-occupied Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, the Moscow-installed authorities say they have suspended coach services on two motorways following a campaign of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian logistics.
They urged local residents not to use them "for security reasons".
The Russia-backed administration also banned commuter train services and transportation of groups of children within Luhansk.
Putin has said Russia is in full control of the so-called "Luhansk People's Republic".
In recent weeks, Ukraine's drone forces have been hitting occupied parts of Ukraine, with officials saying they are targeting Russian logistics.
An analyst told the BBC that more than 200 lorries and over 30 fuel trucks had been hit since the beginning of May.
In the four years since Russia's invasion began, Ukraine has developed its defence sector.
Kyiv is now able to regularly hit targets within Russia. It has focused its efforts on energy infrastructure and oil facilities, which it sees as fuelling Moscow's war machine.
Russia has accused Kyiv of targeting civilians.

SOME NEWS: I'll be leaving my role at the White House at the end of this month. After a break I’ll be working on helping tackle some of the large challenges facing America on AI (more on that later).

Some key public accomplishments from last year I’m proud of
1. Architecting and publishing the American AI Action Plan - charting the course for America to win on AI and helping execute on that for the last year.
2. The AI acceleration partnerships to help American AI stack win globally.
3. The National AI Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence executive order (forming the basis for working with the Hill this year)
4. Advocating for the American AI stack with our allies globally (the AI summits in France and India, state visits to the UK, the Middle East and more)
So what’s next?
The past 18 months have given me a front row seat to this critical moment on AI facing America and our allies. Whether it is energy, data centers or a clear path for Americans to experience the benefits of AI, there are many tough issues we all need to navigate together. I plan on building institutions that help tackle some of those challenges for America and its allies.

"We can now officially declare Joe Biden is the winner."
Skeptics immediately accused the mail-in voting system of being rife with fraud and impossible to verify, but experts were quick to point out that voter fraud is incredibly rare and that no one even needs to make it more transparent or secure.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken part in a plenary session at this year’s St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, wherehe revealed that Kiev requested talks through a Russian businessman, only to kill dozens of Russian teenage girls the following day.
During a 45-minute speech and a two-hour questions and answers panel, Putin discussed economic policy, the conflict in Ukraine, and Russia’s deepening relations with China, India, and their BRICS partners.
Here’s what you need to know.
Zelensky’s letter
During the Q&A session,Putin publicly responded to a recent letter from Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, in which Zelensky insulted Putin, threatened Russia with more drone strikes, and then invited Putin to so-called peace talks.
Putin picked the letter apart, questioning Zelensky’s insistence that the EU – and not the US – should provide Ukraine with security guarantees, and pressing the Ukrainian leader on his refusal to hold elections and “usurpation” of power since his term expired in 2024.
Russia is always ready for serious negotiations, he declared,adding that he would not meet Zelensky “just for the sake of meeting.” Putin noted that the last time Russia entered negotiations with Ukraine and its European backers in good faith, the resulting Minsk agreements “were about one thing: that is saving more time for the rearmament of Ukraine.Why would we need anything like this once again?”
Secret talks in Kiev
Putin revealed for the first time that an unnammed businessman called him last month and said that he had been invited to Kiev to meet with Zelensky's officials. Kiev used themeeting as a backchannel to request a sit-down with Putin, but Ukrainian forces struck a college dormitory in Lugansk with multiple waves of kamikaze drones a day later, killing 21 people, mainly teenage girls.
”I asked him, what does it mean? They are asking for a meeting, and they carry out such atrocious, blatant attacks as the killing of children,” Putin recalled his conversation with the businessman after the attack. “They said ‘I've got no explanation’.”
Referring back to the letter, Putin determined thatinstead of trying “to create an environment for a personal meeting,”Zelensky’s letter wasmeant “to make sure that no personal meetings can take place at all.”
Russian sovereignty
Throughout his speech and his comments afterwards,Putin repeatedly referred to the concept of sovereignty. Cut off from Western financial and trade institutions, Russia was forced to adapt, on the battlefield and in the economic arena.
”Sovereignty implies being smarter and being stronger,” and not just “the capability to oppose external pressure,” Putin said. “This is about the quality of the government, the economy, and society.”
Putin also reminded Ukraine that sovereignty is essential for military victory. “You have to have your own industrial base for a defense industry. You have to have your own scientific base and your own resource base,” he said. “Russia has all of that. So the sooner those who are fighting us understand that, the better it's going to be for them.

China and India are ‘strategic partners’
Sovereignty also involves partnerships with like-minded friends, Putin pointed out. Whereas trade between Eurasian nations like Russia and China was once based on “the settlements, logistics, insurance, [and] arbitration” mechanisms governed from “a handful of Western infrastructure hubs,”Moscow and its BRICS partners are building alternative mechanisms.
From now on, Russia will only cooperate with partners – like India and China – “that honor mutual reciprocal obligations and commitments,” he added, before calling on these countries to develop their own financial and technological sectors.

Putin has said that if US President Donald Trump had been in office in 2022, the situation in Ukraine “would have turned out differently,” adding that he respects Trump and is grateful for his efforts to bring an end to hostilities. Key issues, however, “must still be resolved directly between Russia and Ukraine,” while the US and other countries can help create conditions and act as guarantors, according to the Russian president.
Trump has repeatedly blamed the Ukraine conflict on his predecessor, Joe Biden, and claimed during his 2024 campaign that he could end it quickly.
Drones are the “new reality” of warfare,but Putin points out one key weakness in Ukraine’s drone-reliant military: “they are supplied to Ukraine from the Western states. In Ukraine,they are only assembled.”
