Ottawa Police Charge Driver, Company After Stopping Trailer Missing 10 Wheels

Ottawa police have charged a driver and his company after stopping a commercial truck/trailer combination that was missing 10 of its 12 wheels, with investigators warning the vehicle posed a serious danger to other road users.

Police stopped the vehicle on Lester Road in Ottawa on May 28, and called a Ministry of Transportation enforcement officer to conduct a full inspection of the trailer.

“The trailer should have had 12 wheels, but only had 2. Once safely directed off the road, the investigation revealed that the driver was taking the trailer to a scrap yard and had started the journey in Embrun,” Ottawa Police said in a post to X on May 29.

“The trailer had no operational brakes. All wheel fasteners on one wheel were loose, with one having been sheared off while driving.”

Police said an inspection of the trailer showed that there was a high probability the wheels would separate while the vehicle was in motion, which could result in an accident, causing the injury or death of other drivers.

Police had the compromised trailer removed from the road using a flat-deck trailer, with the cost for its removal charged to the company.

Police said the driver and company representatives would have to appear in court, but did not provide a specific date for the hearing. While they did not specify which charges were laid against the driver and which against the company, police said the charges included operating an unsafe commercial motor vehicle, operating a commercial motor vehicle without displaying the name of the driver, and operating a commercial vehicle for more than 16 hours consecutively.

Police said it is the responsibility of both drivers and companies of commercial vehicles to ensure that vehicles and trailers are safe to be on the road. Part of this responsibility includes ensuring that pre-trip inspections are properly conducted and that any defects are properly noted. Continue…

Kerry-Lynne Findlay Wins BC Conservative Leadership Race on Fourth Ballot

Former Conservative MP and federal cabinet minister Kerry-Lynne Findlay won the B.C. Conservative leadership race on May 30 on the fourth ballot in a close contest that saw her secure 51 percent of the vote, with political commentator Caroline Elliott receiving 49 percent.

Coming in third was former B.C. Liberal cabinet minister Iain Black, followed by entrepreneur Yuri Fulmer in fourth and MLA Peter Milobar, the party announced at a leadership convention in Vancouver.

Findlay, a lawyer, is a former minister of national revenue in Stephen Harper’s Conservative government and served as an MP from 2011 to 2015 and from 2019 to 2025.

In her victory speech, Findlay cited faith, family, and freedom as her priorities.

“In our national anthem, we cry out to God to make our land glorious and free—free people making free choices and free speech in a free-enterprise market economy, where hard work is rewarded and we are not crushed by socialist overreach that wants to dictate literally what we think, what we believe, what we can say, and who we associate with,” she said. 'Lenient': No jail for Tunisian national for 'cruel' violent domestic assault

A Tunisian national living in Quebec has received a conditional discharge and three years’ probation for a violent domestic assault and subsequent harassment, in a sentence the judge admitted was “lenient” and unlikely to satisfy the victim.

Mohamed Aziz Ben Ishak, who had arrived in Canada a year earlier as a temporary resident, attacked Fatma Abada because she had lit a cigarette before nightfall during Ramadan on April 30, 2021.

He kicked her in the ribs. She contacted a friend by phone, but he took it, pushed her to the ground and punched her repeatedly in the head. He grabbed the lit cigarette and put it out on her forearm, while continuing to kick her.

He then dragged her by the hair into the apartment’s entryway. She broke free but he attacked her again, striking her in the head. When police arrived, she refused to give a statement and said she did not wish to press charges. The police left but came back after subsequent calls from Abada and her friend, and arrested Ishak.

He was released the following day, under orders not to communicate with Abada and her friend, be in their presence or go to their places of work or study. But Ishak breached those conditions, eventually meeting Abada in a park and going to her workplace, contacting her by phone, and sending her text messages. He was arrested again.

Court of Quebec Justice David Simon said the “assaults committed by the offender are neither trivial nor minimal, far from it. They demonstrate a high degree of violence, manifesting itself repeatedly in various forms: multiple kicks to the body, including to the ribs; snatching the telephone from the victim’s hands; punches to the head; and hair-pulling to drag the victim.” Continue…

More than three decades after it was created to honour the nation’s military heroes, and years of passionate advocacy by supporters, the Canadian Victoria Cross could soon have its long-awaited first recipient.

The Carney government has announced the establishment of an Independent Military Honours Review Board to review cases of Afghanistan veterans, where new evidence suggests that their bravery meets the criteria for the Canadian Victoria Cross.

“These days in Canada, we have so few precious symbols of our nation to pull us together as Canadians,” said Gen. (ret’d) Rick Hillier, who commanded Canada’s troops in Afghanistan and fought for the review board to be established. In particular, he has advocated the case of Private Jess Larochelle, who fended off an attack from more than 20 Taliban insurgents.

Hillier helped lead six years of lobbying that included 66,000 emails, a parliamentary petition, the Senate, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs, unanimous calls from seven provincial legislatures, 109 veterans organizations, generals, admirals, Silver Cross mothers and wounded veterans.

In a high stakes rescue mission, a B.C. pilot successfully evacuated an American doctor’s family after he tested positive for Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Villeneuve, a Mission Aviation Fellowship pilot, flew the family to safety in neighbouring Uganda. The physician who contracted Ebola had been working at the remote Nyankunde Hospital and was evacuated separately to Germany for specialized treatment. The doctor’s wife — also a physician — their children, and another doctor who sustained direct exposure to the virus were aboard the flight piloted by Villeneuve.

The flight, which took place on May 20, lasted an hour and 15 minutes and Dominic Villeneuve, 30, tells National post that he was “not particularly worried for my own well-being.” He said that he was confident in the safety precautions in place, including his wearing PPE for the duration of the flight.

Villeneuve, a Mission Aviation Fellowship pilot, flew the family to safety in neighbouring Uganda. Villeneuve’s dream of becoming a pilot goes right back to his childhood. “My earliest memories are growing up in Kamloops, riding my bike to the airport with my dad and watching the planes come and go. Watching him and dreaming that one day I could become a pilot,” he told National Post. Continue…

The incident occurred in November at a National Institutes of Health facility, and the culprit was a monkey infected with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

Thankfully, the worker was promptly treated for the bite, and never picked up the lethal tick-borne illness. The employee was soon able to return to work.

(GAESA) as a “Cuban military-controlled financial conglomerate that steals millions in aid for the Cuban people at the behest of the regime.” The United States sanctioned GAESA on May 7, 2026, under Executive Order 14404, signed by President Trump on May 1. The State Department issued the designations while the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) administered them.

Founded by Raúl Castro, GAESA is the economic arm of Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) and one of the country’s most powerful institutions. Despite existing within a nominally socialist state, it operates under an opaque structure resembling a capitalist corporation, with subsidiaries incorporated in Panama, Cyprus, and Liberia to bypass U.S. sanctions restrictions.

It controls an estimated 40 percent or more of the island’s economy, with gross profits representing close to 37 percent of Cuba’s GDP, total revenues 3.2 times greater than the annual Cuban state budget, and exports accounting for roughly 34 percent of the island’s total. Moderna Snags $50 Million Ebola Vax Contract

Canada is one of the few countries on Earth that provides a democratic, peaceful path for regional secession through referenda as per the Clarity Act. There are many hurdles for a province to overcome before achieving full independence, but they are not insurmountable and don't require any form of military action. Much less from a foreign entity.

The Alberta independence movement has been explicitly peaceful and law-abiding. It has pursued its goals through petitioning for a referendum based on the rules set out in federal legislation. “If you could have a successful program which confronted that—and we know there is elasticity in the moderately disinformed, not the extremely disinformed—you could probably move enough pieces that you would really reduce the spectre of this problem," Graves told The Hill Times.

He further argued that Alberta has nearly twice as many people influenced by misinformation as the rest of Canada and warned that foreign actors should not be allowed to spread information that could encourage Albertans to leave Confederation.

Canadians remain broadly supportive of the country's original assisted dying law, but new polling suggests support weakens sharply when eligibility is expanded to include people who are not near death or those seeking MAiD for mental illness alone.

A new Angus Reid Institute survey released Monday found 77% of Canadians still support the original 2016 Medical Assistance in Dying framework, which applied to people whose deaths were reasonably foreseeable and who were suffering from a severe and irremediable condition.

Support drops for the 2021 expansion of MAiD, which removed the requirement that a person's natural death be reasonably foreseeable.

Canadians are even more divided over whether MAiD should be available when mental illness is the sole underlying condition. The survey found 43% support that expansion, while 39% oppose it and 19% are unsure.

The findings suggest Canadians remain generally supportive of assisted dying in principle, but are increasingly uncertain about how far the law should go.

Mental illness as a sole condition is currently scheduled to become eligible for MAID in 2027, but Angus Reid found most Canadians are unaware of the pending change.

Among Canadians who say they are following the issue, 46% support expanding MAiD to include mental illness alone, while 44% oppose it.

The poll also found widespread concern over whether vulnerable Canadians have adequate support before MAiD eligibility is expanded further.

Nearly three-quarters of respondents, 74%, said government should be required to prove adequate housing, income supports and disability-related care are available to a person with a disability who requests MAiD.

Religious Canadians were more likely to express concern about the rising number of annual MAiD deaths. Angus Reid found 43% of religious Canadians were concerned about the increase, compared to 25% of non-religious Canadians.

The survey also found personal experience with MAiD affects public opinion. Canadians who know someone who used MAiD to end their life, representing 23% of respondents, were more likely to support each version of the law.

Craig Brentton Durando, 25, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, assault with a weapon, and robbery in connection with the September 2023 incident at a Terrace, B.C. home. His sentence was delivered by the B.C. Supreme Court in a ruling last week.

The court heard that Durando and four other friends planned to confront and assault a man named Nicolas Balatti in his home after Balatti and one of the friends got into a “verbal altercation involving mutual threats” at a house party in August 2023, and continued the argument over TikTok and Snapchat.

The group made their way to Balatti’s home in the early hours of the morning of Sept. 5 after one of the men sent him a message stating “see you tonight” accompanied by a kiss emoji.

The court heard Durando, who was 22 at the time, was impaired by cocaine and alcohol when he kicked down the door of Balatti’s home to search for him.

Durando instead found Nicolas’ mother, Kelly Balatti, in bed, according to the agreed statement of facts. He told her to remove her jewelry and lie on the floor, then hit her multiple times with a baseball bat while demanding to know the whereabouts of Nicolas. Continue…

The federal government spent more than $46 million on advertising, marketing and influencer campaigns to promote COVID-19 vaccines, but says it cannot provide a comprehensive accounting of how much money was spent researching vaccine risks and adverse effects.

The figures were disclosed in response to an order paper question submitted by Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall, who asked for a detailed breakdown of federal spending related to COVID-19 vaccine research, promotion, public education and risk communication.

According to the response from Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, the government ran a series of vaccine promotion campaigns between 2021 and 2023 costing at least $46.7 million.

Among the largest expenditures were:

$11.3 million for the "COVID-19 Vaccine – Ripple Effect" campaign in 2021;

$7 million for the "COVID-19 Vaccine – Kids" campaign;

$5.3 million for the "COVID-19 Vaccine – Ask the Experts" campaign;

$4.9 million for the "Educate and Build Trust" campaign;

$4.8 million for the "Parents" campaign;

More than $132,000 for a dedicated social media influencer campaign.

The government said the campaigns were intended to promote awareness of vaccine availability and provide Canadians with “science-based, factual information” about vaccine safety, effectiveness, side effects and eligibility. Advertising appeared across television, radio, social media, digital platforms, print media, search engines and outdoor advertising.

When asked how much money was spent investigating and researching the risks and adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines, however, Health Canada responded that the information is “not systematically tracked in a centralized database.”

The department said producing a complete response would require a manual collection and validation process that could result in incomplete or inaccurate information.

The government also declined to provide a dollar figure for spending specifically dedicated to informing Canadians about vaccine risks and adverse effects, instead grouping risk information together with broader vaccine education and promotion efforts.

Health Canada noted that its regulators reviewed 189 COVID-19 vaccine submissions between October 2020 and February 2026 and maintained that benefits and risks were often evaluated together as part of the approval process.

Separately, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research reported investing more than $74 million in COVID-19 vaccine research since 2019-20, though it said it does not centrally track the specific information requested in the Order Paper question.

The response leaves unanswered one of the key questions raised by Wagantall: how much taxpayer money was directed toward studying and communicating potential vaccine risks compared to the tens of millions spent promoting vaccine uptake.

The name “Sankofa” comes from the Akan language of Ghana and is commonly associated with the idea of self-reflection. The square works as a central venue for concerts, demonstrations, and civic events in Toronto’s downtown core and is scheduled to host Pride programming under its new name.

In Ghana, though, lawmakers have approved a bill that would criminalize identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, with proposed prison terms of up to three years. The legislation also includes provisions criminalizing the promotion of LGBTQ-related activity and introduces a requirement for members of the public to report prohibited conduct.

The bill still requires approval from President John Dramani Mahama before it can become law. It comes amid continued pressure from religious leaders calling for stricter enforcement of laws relating to sexual orientation.

Nowak, an accounting and finance student, was walking home from a night out in Southampton on December 3, 2025, when Digwa, 23, stabbed the teen 5 times with an 8-inch knife.

Digwa stabbed Nowak in the face, legs and chest.

Nowak tried to flee but he was bleeding profusely. When police arrived, Digwa told police that Nowak was a racist and knocked off his head wrap.

“We’ve just been attacked by someone racially, this [REDACTED]… we’ve been attacked racially by some white person,” Digwa’s brother told police in a 911 call.

Nowak told police that he had been stabbed, but police handcuffed him and dragged him away while he was bleeding out and dying.

“I can’t breathe!” “I’m dying!” the 18-year-old shouted as British police dragged him.

The police did not believe Nowak until it was too late.

“I don’t think you have, mate,” the officer told Nowak.

Moments later, Nowak is seen lying on the ground, lifeless.

As I noted in this space in April and May, the polyamory “community” has begun their push for legal recognition with earnest. This campaign really ramped up in 2024, and activists are using the LGBT playbook to spearhead the next phase of the sexual revolution. I predicted at least one major news article a month sympathetically profiling the agenda of polyamorists, using almost identical language and tactics.

Well, here we are again. This time, the propaganda column appeared in Canadian Affairs, which is a bit on the nose, but I will refrain from too many jokes if I can. The title lets you know where the publication stands right from the get-go: “Love outside the law.” The subtitle: “A sizable number of Canadians are in polyamorous relationships. Canadian law does not recognize them.”

Now, for comparison, here is CTV’s headline from only a month earlier: “Polyamory is growing in Canada, but the legal system hasn’t caught up.” Notice any similarities?

Well, perhaps that’s just coincidence. Let’s try another paragraph. Here is how Canadian Affairs describes the situation:

In Joyce Arthur's world, having guidelines around who can and cannot be killed by lethal injection is 'punishing' those who do not qualify.

Joyce Arthur of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada supports abortion up until birth, for any reason or for no reason at all, and funded by your taxpayer dollars.

To be clear for a moment about what that means: A baby in the womb likely begins to feel pain in the first trimester, and certainly by 24 weeks. Last year in Iowa, a premature baby survived after being born at 21 weeks. Arthur supports abortion—a violent and profoundly painful process—even when the baby can survive outside the womb. Even when she sucks her thumb and recognizes her mother’s voice.

Thus, when Joyce Arthur calls something “cruel,” you can be sure that something approximating the opposite is happening. This, after all, is someone who thinks abortion is compassionate healthcare (the crushing of baby skulls notwithstanding), and that objecting to the violence of abortion is reprehensible.

Sure enough, Arthur has surfaced to bestow her wisdom on the Canadian public once again—although this time, she is advocating for killing at the end of life’s spectrum rather than the beginning. CBC’s June 1 headline makes it clear that they agree with her: “Manitoba MAID law ‘punishing’ 94-year-old woman, pro-choice group says.”

To translate, Arthur is claiming that because a 94-year-old woman in Steinbach, Manitoba, does not qualify for euthanasia under Canada’s currently (very permissive) regime, the law is “punishing” that woman.

“It’s a mark of cruelty and trauma that’s inflicted on her,” Arthur told the CBC. “She’s having to resort to desperate methods like stopping her heart medication and antibiotics. She is forced to live in a hospital rather than a nice palliative care center, far from home. So the law is actually punishing her. And it’s really, really unjust and really unfortunate.” Continue…

Human rights tribunal accuses Canada of 'crimes against humanity' with 'genocidal intent' over treatment of indigenous people

An international panel of human rights experts has accused Canada of committing genocide against its indigenous population after a week-long hearing in Montreal.

The Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal (PPT), an opinion human rights tribunal, ordered to look into "the missing and disappeared indigenous children and unmarked graves, and the forced and coerced sterilisation of indigenous women" in Canadian indigenous communities.

They claimed to base their judgement on "international law for the crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity."

The PPT's final decision came Sunday, with seven judges comprising the panel and adopting several policies they deemed were "crimes against humanity" with "genocidal intent," including the "concrete manifestation of Canada's colonial policies," namely residential schools.

"Between 4,000 and 6,000 children are known to have died in these institutions, or shortly after leaving them (sometimes running away) in the century and a half up until 1997, when the last institution, Kivalliq Hall in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, closed," claimed the judges' statement.

BC Court to Hear Appeal of Woman Fined $10K for Private Remarks

The Supreme Court of British Columbia will hear an appeal by a woman ordered her to pay a $10,000 penalty after remarks she made in a private conversation with a friend were ruled discriminatory by a B.C. tribunal.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) confirmed the hearing in a release this week, saying it will represent the woman.

According to the findings of the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal, B.C. resident Kristin Olsen and Terry Wiebe were longtime friends who also shared work and living arrangements before their relationship deteriorated.

Wiebe lived in a motorhome on Olsen’s property from 2014 to 2018. Following a dispute between the two, Wiebe filed a complaint with the tribunal in 2019.

Wiebe, who identifies as transgender, alleged that Olsen discriminated against her for her gender identity after Wiebe expressed to Olsen her desire to get “top surgery” to remove her breasts. According to the ruling, the tribunal had accepted that Olsen was concerned about Wiebe getting top surgery because of her mother’s battle with breast cancer and concerns with the medical risks of the surgery.

The ruling said that Olsen had advised Wiebe not to go through with the surgery, and that she was “fine as a lesbian” and did not need to “mutilate” her body. Olsen denied using the word “mutilate,” but the tribunal found it “more likely than not” that Olsen had used the term. Continue…

Agriculture Minister Reappoints Canadian Dairy Commission CEO Benoit Basillais

Federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald says Benoit Basillais has been reappointed as CEO of the Canadian Dairy Commission.

Basillais will serve an additional three-year term effective July 4.

Basillais was appointed CEO of the commission in 2022, replacing Serge Riendeau.

MacDonald says Basillais’ contributions have helped to ensure a stable, co-ordinated and responsive dairy industry.

Basillais began his career with the Canadian Dairy Commission as an economist in 2003 and has held various leadership positions in the organization.

The Canadian Dairy Commission is a Crown corporation that oversees Canada’s dairy supply management system.

Saskatchewan Law Allows Victims of Drug Trafficking to Sue Traffickers

A new Saskatchewan law allows people harmed by illegal drug trafficking, including those affected by addiction, to sue drug traffickers for damages in civil court.

Under the Response to Illicit Drugs Act, which came into effect on June 1, individuals harmed by illicit drug activity can bring civil actions to recover damages from people who produce, traffic, import, or export highly addictive drugs, the province said in a June 1 news release.

“By bringing this Act into force, the Government of Saskatchewan is ensuring that those who profit from trafficking deadly substances face meaningful consequences for the damage they cause,” Saskatchewan Justice Minister and Attorney General Tim McLeod said.

“At the same time, our government continues to address mental health and addictions through expanded treatment and recovery supports.”

The Act would also allow provincial authorities to void appointments, grants, and agreements held by an individual or entity convicted of offences related to Schedule I drugs including fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, morphine, codeine, and other highly addictive drugs.

However, the Act does not apply to offences related to simple possession of those substances, it said. Continue…

Schools, Band Office Closed After Saskatchewan Shooting Kills One, Injures Another

The remote northeastern Saskatchewan community of Pelican Narrows has been left shaken after a shooting near its local health clinic that killed one person and injured another.

RCMP say a suspect was taken into custody late Monday, almost six hours after residents in the community about 500 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon were ordered to shelter in place.

Officials with Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation say that for safety reasons, schools and the local band office will be closed the rest of the week.

It also says the health centre will offer limited services to clients with serious medical needs.

Dr. John-Michael Stevens has provided services at the clinic for nine years and says staff he’s spoken to say that they—and the community at large—are shaken.

Hydro-Québec fought to hide parts of letters from the 1960s showing what it offered to lure a French aluminum company to the province, including its internal comments about an energy deal with Newfoundland and Labrador.

In a 2024 fight in front of Quebec’s access-to-information commission, the utility claimed the correspondence could jeopardize its present-day energy negotiations with Newfoundland and Labrador about Churchill Falls. Hydro-Québec lost the battle and released the information—including to The Canadian Press last month.

Carney Says Reduced Immigration, Lower Government Spending Causing Economic ‘Weakness’

Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded to the news that the Canadian economy entered a technical recession by saying lower population growth and reduced government spending have contributed to “weakness” in the economy.

Statistics Canada reported on May 29 that Canada’s economy showed no growth in the first quarter of 2026 after negative growth in the last quarter of 2025. The country’s GDP declined for two consecutive quarters on an annualized basis, meeting the common definition of a technical recession.

Asked by reporters in Parliament on June 2 whether Canada was in a recession, Carney responded by saying his government had “been in the process of laying the foundations for a stronger, more resilient, more independent” Canadian economy. He said this involved the “difficult” work of making major investments, changing the way government operates, and securing trade agreements with other countries.

“As we do all that, the data is going to be uneven, and we will see some weakness,” Carney said.

Carney also said his government had tightened immigration policies, leading to slower population growth and, in turn, weaker economic activity. Canada’s population had increased by more than 3 million people from 2020 to 2025 due to immigration, but Ottawa began lowering its target immigration levels in 2024.

Budget 2025 stated that Canada would aim to admit 385,000 temporary residents next year and 370,000 in the following two years, while the 2024 immigration plan had said Canada would welcome more than 516,000 temporary residents for 2025. Continue…

The chief of cardiac surgery at the Jewish General Hospital has tendered his resignation and plans to move to Atlanta in September, citing rising antisemitism in Montreal and worsening problems with the province’s health-care system, The Gazette can reveal.

Dr. Emmanuel Moss, who has worked at the Jewish General for the past 10 years, has already informed his patients and his synagogue of his imminent move to the United States. Moss’s departure from Montreal marks the second high-profile Montreal Jew — after Concordia University professor Gad Saad — to decide this spring to quit the city amid a sharp increase in documented antisemitic incidents in the past three years.

During a May 12 appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Saad announced he accepted a post at the University of Mississippi, where he had already worked as a scholar during a two-year leave of absence from Concordia. He spoke of death threats he received while at Concordia, saying, “I’m now leaving in large part because it became difficult for me, if not impossible, to be a high-profile Jewish professor who supports the right of Israel to exist.” Continue…
