‘Drag Queen Story Hour’ would be a scandal in a normal country. But Canada is not a normal country

In a sane and normal (not to say moral) country, bringing in drag queens to read to schoolchildren would be breaking news, and canceling a drag queen event for children would not. Canada, of course, is not such a country.
Thus, Canada’s press is breathlessly covering yet another Pride Month scandal. Mutchmor Public School—aptly named, as it turns out—had scheduled drag performer Adrianna Exposée to come in and read to children on June 19 for the Sacred Liturgical Month of Pride. According to Juno News: “According to a letter sent to parents at Mutchmor Public School, the June 19 event was quietly cancelled as questions mount over parental pushback and how far equity and inclusion initiatives should go inside classrooms.”
The school claimed that the drag performer event “was intended to promote literacy and themes of equity, diversity, and inclusion,” but the administrators decided to instead incorporate these themes into “regular classroom activities.” Apparently, it is in fact possible to teach literacy without drag queens.
But Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustee Donna Blackburn informed the Ottawa Citizen that she is “very, very disappointed and quite frankly mortified” (one would think her threshold for mortification was quite high, but there you have it). According to the Citizen: “Blackburn, who describes herself as Ottawa’s first openly gay school trustee elected in a municipal election, said the cancellation sent the wrong message to LGBTQ+ students.”
In case you’re wondering about who Blackburn thought the right messenger for schoolchildren is, feel free to take a look at Adrianna Exposée’s website, although I don’t recommend it. As US President Donald Trump took his place between OpenAI chief Sam Altman and DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis at the G7 meeting Wednesday in Evian-les-Bains, France, he encountered an unexpected challenge: his chair appeared noticeably lower than everyone else's.
With his microphone still live, Trump could be heard asking for help adjusting the chair, tapping Altman's arm and gesturing toward the seat's adjustment mechanism.
"You look at yourself in a picture and say, 'What happened?'" Trump remarked. "I had the lowest chair in the whole room."
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney quickly stepped in, offering a simple solution to the situation, offering his own chair.
According to The Daily Beast, Carney offered to trade seats with the president, joking, "I've got the general's chair," before handing over his own. Trump replied, "That's much better."

In a sudden about-face, the Canadian government is telling some people who recently applied for citizenship under new laws that their applications are under review and they need to turn over their citizenship certificates.
BBC News reports that Shawn Davis Mooney, who recently relocated permanently from California to Victoria, B.C., with his husband was alarmed when he received his letter.
“It has devastated me beyond imagination,” he said.
He said he submitted 114 pages of documents showing a great-great-grandparent was born in New Brunswick and was granted a citizenship certificate in February.
Letters shared on social media and signed by Peggy Sun, Registrar of Canadian Citizenship, say in part: “I am writing pursuant to subsection 26(1) of the Citizenship Regulations. This provision authorizes me to require the surrender of a certificate of citizenship where I have reasonable grounds to believe that the holder of the certificate may not be entitled to it (i.e. may not be a Canadian citizen).”
The letters add: “The purpose of this letter is to inform you that I have information in my possession that indicates that you may not be entitled to hold a Canadian certificate of citizenship.” Continue…

Toronto Police Arrest Suspect Wanted in US Consulate Shooting

A 19-year-old suspect wanted in connection with a shooting at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto this spring has been arrested by city police after a four-month investigation.
The Toronto Police Service announced the June 17 arrest of Zara Jabbi just days after saying he was the lone suspect still at large in connection with the March 10 consulate shooting.
Jabbi is facing six charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, and attack on premises of internationally protected persons, police said in a press release on June 18. He is also facing three firearm-related charges.
He has been scheduled to appear remotely at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre at 10 a.m. on June 18.
Jabbi’s arrest comes two days after Toronto police held a press conference to announce three arrests connected to shootings at the U.S. Consulate and multiple Jewish schools and synagogues in Toronto.

Over 32,000 inadmissible foreign nationals granted entry to Canada since 2021

More than 32,000 foreign nationals who were deemed inadmissible to Canada were nevertheless granted permission to enter or remain in the country through Temporary Resident Permits (TRPs) between January 2021 and March 2026, according to a newly released response to an order paper question.
The figures, provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), show that 32,660 permits were issued despite applicants being found inadmissible under provisions of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
The permits were issued for a wide range of inadmissibility grounds, including criminality, serious criminality, security concerns, misrepresentation, human rights violations, and non-compliance with immigration laws.
Among the most notable figures were permits granted to individuals found inadmissible for criminal offences. Federal records show 4,970 permits were issued to people deemed inadmissible for criminality, while another 2,700 permits were granted to individuals found inadmissible for serious criminality.
The government also approved permits for people caught misrepresenting themselves on immigration applications. A total of 325 permits were issued to applicants found inadmissible for misrepresentation.
Records further show permits were granted to individuals flagged on security grounds, as well as to those linked to human or international rights violations, though privacy rules suppress exact figures when the totals are very small.
The overwhelming majority of permits were issued by IRCC, which approved 24,515 permits during the period. The Canada Border Services Agency approved an additional 8,145.
Temporary Resident Permits allow otherwise inadmissible foreign nationals to enter or remain in Canada when officials determine their presence is justified despite the inadmissibility finding.
The largest category of permits was issued for "non-compliance with the Act," accounting for more than 12,000 approvals. However, thousands were also issued to individuals whose inadmissibility stemmed from criminal convictions or more serious offences.
The figures were disclosed in response to order paper question Q-1184 tabled in the House of Commons and cover the period from January 1, 2021, to March 31, 2026.

President Trump will travel to the President’s Camp David retreat in Northern Maryland today after signing the memorandum of understanding to end the war in Iran on Wednesday.
The memorandum declared a 60-day ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as talks continue for a final deal to end the war. Iran has agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons, and the US plans to provide sanctions relief based on Iran’s performance in meeting its commitments.
Trump signed the 14-point agreement on Wednesday while having dinner at the Palace of Versailles with European leaders. Vance and the Iranians also signed the deal electronically.
Trump is currently facing backlash over the deal from a handful of GOP lawmakers and Israeli officials.
He defended the memorandum of understanding in statements on Truth Social this morning.

A federal judge on Thursday ordered the immediate release of Salah Sarsour, the president of Wisconsin’s largest mosque. Sarsour had been locked up by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who flagged him as a serious foreign policy and national security threat.
As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, ICE arrested Salah Sarsour, president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee (Wisconsin’s largest mosque) and board member of the pro-Palestinian group American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), on March 30.
DHS labeled him a terrorist. He was convicted by an Israeli military court of throwing a Molotov cocktail at Israeli forces and later attempting to possess weapons and ammunition. He allegedly lied on his U.S. immigration forms to secure a green card under President Bill Clinton.
Sarsour also raised funds for the Holy Land Foundation (HLF), the Hamas front group convicted of funneling over $12 million to terrorists. An FBI memo from 2001 listed him as a Hamas fundraiser in the U.S. through HLF. His brother Imad was similarly flagged.

Canada Post paid bonuses to thousands of employees last year despite posting a record $1.57 billion loss, CEO Doug Ettinger told a House of Commons committee Thursday.
Blacklock's Reporter says the disclosure came as MPs pressed postal management over executive compensation and cost-cutting efforts at the Crown corporation, which has not reported a pre-tax profit since 2017 and has repeatedly warned about its deteriorating financial position.
Appearing before the Commons government operations committee, Ettinger acknowledged the corporation paid what it calls “at-risk pay” to employees as part of its compensation structure, even as the organization recorded its largest annual loss on record.
The revelation drew criticism from Conservative MP Andrew Lawton, who questioned why bonuses were being paid while taxpayers face mounting concerns over the Crown corporation’s finances.
“Are you still paying executive bonuses?” Lawton asked.
Ettinger replied that Canada Post maintains two incentive programs but noted one corporate team incentive program has not paid out since 2011.
However, he confirmed another compensation program did result in bonus payments last year.
“In the broader compensation program, to keep that talent, we paid a bonus last year — sorry, at-risk pay,” said Ettinger. “It was part of their compensation.”
Lawton repeatedly pressed the CEO to disclose how much was paid out, particularly to executives.
“How much?” he asked. “I am trying to get to the number here, sir.”
Ettinger said he did not have the figure available but promised to provide it to the committee at a later date.
According to the CEO, approximately 7,000 employees participate in the at-risk pay program, including managers, front-line supervisors and members of two unions whose collective agreements include the benefit.
He said nearly two-thirds of those covered by the program are unionized employees.
Ettinger defended the payments as necessary to retain staff during what he described as a major transformation of the postal service.
“One of the things I lose sleep about is keeping the good people who are with us,” he told MPs, adding that Canada Post faces competition for skilled employees.
The testimony comes months after Public Works Minister Joel Lightbound publicly called on Canada Post management to reduce costs and improve efficiency amid growing financial losses.
“I expect management to do its job and come back with a serious plan to cut the fat in terms of management,” Lightbound said last October. “Cut back and ensure Canada Post is managed efficiently.”
Ettinger told MPs the corporation has already reduced management and executive positions by more than 10% and cut approximately $200 million in discretionary spending over the past two years, including travel and other operational expenses.
Lawton said the committee is seeking details on how much executives received in bonuses while the Crown corporation continued to post billion-dollar losses.
“What we’re really after here is whether executives at Canada Post are making out like executives at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, which paid out $30.7 million in bonuses in 2024, or VIA Rail, which paid out $11 million in bonuses,” said Lawton.
“We want to know how much you and your colleagues are getting while posting a billion-dollar deficit.”
Ettinger responded that the corporation would provide the committee with the requested compensation figures.

Trump’s statement comes after Giorgia Meloni lost it, attacking Trump in a video statement on Friday.
“Certain things deserve an immediate response,” she said after Trump snubbed her in an interview, claiming she “begged” for a photo with him. “Donald Trump’s statements are totally made up and completely invented. I am frankly astonished.”
Meloni continued, “I don’t know why the President of the United States behaves this way with his allies — and it’s not the first time.”
“I can only say that it’s a shame he doesn’t show the same resolve toward the enemies of the West and the enemies of the United States, toward which he is instead much more accommodating,” she said. “But one thing he should remember: Neither I nor Italy ever beg.”
Meloni shared the clip on X, writing, “Neither I nor Italy ever beg.”

Bits of the history of Paris are emerging from the ground beneath Notre Dame cathedral, along with pieces of a medieval mystery.
The project began when Notre Dame was struck by fire in 2019, and French media are calling it the “dig of the century.”
“It’s a rare opportunity for us to work on something that’s tangibly going to make a difference to the history of Paris,” Lucie Altenburg, a conservator with the Paris archaeology unit, said, per the Associated Press.
A 1,700-year-old Roman coin stamped with the face of Emperor Constantine has been found, as have fragments of medieval pottery with marks no one has yet interpreted.
“It makes Notre Dame feel alive again,” Emily Carter, 34, a tourist from Manchester, said. “You come to see the cathedral, then realize there’s another city under your feet. That’s almost more moving.” Continue…
