How shadowy unit of government 'thought police' set up by ex-MI6 agent is trying to keep a lid on Britain's simmering racial tensions

While the streets of Belfast were ablaze with anti-immigration protests last week, behind the scenes a group of spies, spinners and soldiers were deploying the 'dark arts' to try to defuse tensions.

The name of the secretive Government propaganda unit trying to manipulate events makes it sound like an innocuous back-office operation – the Research, Information and Communications Unit, or RICU.

But the dull moniker is part of the deliberate camouflage of an outfit which uses deception and skulduggery to try to manage the 'challenges' of multiculturalism.

Its techniques range from planting stories in the media, using undercover operatives to lay flowers at the scene of terrorist attacks and even, in one case, sending a pop group to sing anti-extremist songs in Muslim schools.

The 22-strong unit was established in 2007 by the late Charles Farr, a former MI6 officer, as part of the Prevent counter-terrorism strategy.

Modelled on the Information Research Department (IRD), a propaganda unit established by the Attlee government in 1948 to blacken the names of communists and other political opponents, RICU operates out of the Home Office's Westminster headquarters.

While its original purpose was to monitor and challenge the spread of Al Qaeda propaganda and to vet the language used by public officials when describing terrorism, its tentacles now stretch far across Whitehall – to the extent that critics say it risks strangling free speech.

When the mobs took to the streets of Northern Ireland last week following the stabbing of Stephen Ogilvie, allegedly by Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old Sudanese asylum-seeker, RICU swung into action to advise the police in the province on how to 'control the narrative'.

Shortly into the event, Trump touted a chart on his left side showing the length of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool compared to some of the “tallest buildings in the world,” including the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center, and Sears Tower.

“If you lay it on its side, you take two or three of them to fill it in. The width is almost 200 feet wide,” the president said. “It’s going to be really special.”

The Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC, is wowing skeptics after months of criticism from the radical left.

The Trump administration has continued to debunk criticisms of the Reflecting Pool restoration process. The establishment media has been one of the worst offenders, penning articles picking apart the shade of blue chosen for the bottom of the pool and more. The Washington Post ran to a “color consultant” who believes the shade will look “very dismal.” The New York Times also targeted the improvements made to the pool.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum pointed out that former President Obama’s administration closed the Reflecting Pool for two years, spending a whopping $38 million attempting to repair it, and yet did not do the job. President Trump’s fix is comprehensive and included draining the pool, sand blasting, repairing all of the pipes and bubblers, and restoring the color. The bottom of the pool, Burgum explained, had turned gray, and Trump chose American flag blue as the bottom color.

Images of the nearly finished Reflecting Pool are circulating on social media, and people like what they see so far.

“I’d heard so much about the newly renovated Reflection Pool, so I decided to come see it for myself. It’s absolutely beautiful. Thank you, Donald Trump, for helping restore our nation’s capital!” one X user wrote, sharing a video of the partially filled pool, which was, in fact, showing the reflection of the National Monument.

In another video, a previously skeptical woman admits she likes how it looks.

“The water is ON, the Reflecting Pool is reflecting, and D.C. is looking better than ever,” the White House declared. “We are so back. THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP. ”

Speaking to Breitbart News Daily about the upgrade, Interior Secretary Burgum said there were many facets to this repair, but America is fortunate to have the “master builder” in charge to get it done.

Referring to the fact that prior to President Trump’s renovations, the pool was leaking 45,000 gallons of water a day, Burgum said, “We had to have water continuously running into it just to keep even. All of that’s going to be taken care of, because we’ve got the master builder,” Burgum said. “We’ve got President Trump. You know, he’s the only guy that’s ever occupied that office that’s done the level of complex construction projects. And he loves construction workers. He loves construction, and he knows exactly what he’s talking about on these projects.”

What's happening to this Sun-crossing rocket? The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, visible on the upper left, launched only about one minute before this amazing image was captured. As it rose to low Earth orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, in late May, the rocket became supersonic before it crossed the disk of the distant Sun – from the perspective of the well-placed photographer. The spacecraft's high speed caused bow-shaped compressed-air shockwaves to form across leading surfaces, with at least three visible even outside the Sun's disk because they refract sunlight. And in one particularly bizarre case, the unitsecretly funded a boyband in 2016to tour Muslim areas of Britainto sing songs with anti-radicalisation themes. The British-American pop trio, known as Mr Meanor, visited schools in Sheffield, Manchester and Runcorn.

They included Parrs Wood High School in Manchester, where aformer student was revealed to have travelled to Syria.

Among the songs sung by the group wereThink About It. which includes references to the 9/11 terror attacks in New York in 2001 and the 7/7 bombings in London in 2005.

It includes the lyrics: 'See these hashtags all night, Turn the TV on and something else ain't right, More people gone don't know how we sleep at night. What I'm hoping is we can lead a precious life, 9/11 changes how we view these things, People want to terrorise, And 7/7 left behind more broken lives right before our eyes.'

In June 2017, Darren Osborne, a recent convert to far-Right ideology, drove a white van into a crowd of pedestrians close to Finsbury Park mosque in north London, killing one person and injuring ten. Reports at the time said that Osborne had been held down and beaten by people at the scene, until an imam appealed to them to stop.

It later emerged that the reports about the peace-making imam had originated after journalistswere approached at the police cordon by a woman called 'Gabbie', whosaid she worked for a company called 'Horizon PR' and offered to introduce them to a third partywho 'stressed to the journalists the role that the mosque's imam had played in protecting Osborne until he could be handed over to police'.

The story was the work of an agency called Breakthrough Media – which had been paid by RICU.

The unit'sfingerprints were also all over the hashtag #WeStandTogetherwhich appeared on Twitter afterwards and was shared by prominent politicians, police commanders and the London Fire Brigade.

RICU frequently uses social media in this way to infiltrate online conversations in 'target communities'.

However, according to Sir William Shawcross, who published a review of Prevent in 2023,the unit seems more keen to target the far-Right than extreme Islamists.

Sir William wrote: 'The bar for whatRICU includes on Islamism looks to be relatively high, whereas thebar for what is included on the extreme Right-wing is comparably low.'

By way of illustrating his point, in 2023 theunit identified viewing habitswhich it believedindicate that someone could be susceptible to far-Right views. These included Michael Portillo's Great British Railway Journeys, The Thick Of It and Yes Minister, all on the BBC.Works by Shakespeare, Chaucer and Milton were described as 'key texts' of interest to 'white nationalists/supremacists'.

Mr Portillo, a formerTory minister, reactedto the leaked report by saying: 'Why are senior officials, at least, not trying to stop this stuff before it pops upandembarrasses ministers in the Government?' (instead of stopping the bullshitting of labeling people??? What an idiot!)

Security expert Professor Anthony Glees responded: 'The unit that produced this report is called RICU.

The unit has also cited work by The Spectator journalists Rod Liddle andDouglas Murrayas contributing to 'negative views about Islam and Muslims via the pages of mainstream publications'.

Sir Jacobaccused RICU of 'wasting efforton elected politiciansscandalously diverting resources from evil-doers'.

When Defence SecretaryDan Jarvis was asked about the unit last year – he was security minister at the time – and its claim that thescandal of grooming gangs was being exploited by the far-Right, he said: 'Many documents are produced across Government that are not implemented and do not constitute Government policy.'

A Home Office spokesman said: 'RICU provides analysis on extremist use of propaganda and exploitation of the internetto inform the UK'scounter terrorism system. We cannot comment on its operations.'

A brilliant fireball lit up the night sky Sunday, drawing nearly 400 reports from skywatchers across more than a dozen states, including Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi.

The American Meteor Society logged the event shortly after 10:30 p.m. CDT Sunday, with witnesses reporting sightings from across a large portion of the central and southeastern United States.

Reports came in from at least 15 states, including Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas.

Several of those reports came from communities across the Mid-South, meaning many local residents may have witnessed the rare celestial event if they happened to be looking up at the right time.

Witnesses described an exceptionally bright meteor streaking across the sky, with many reporting a vivid greenish-white glow. Several observers also said the object appeared to break apart before disappearing from view.

"It was SUPER BRIGHT and lit up the whole sky," one witness in Oakland, Tennessee, reported to the American Meteor Society.

Another witness from Arlington described the display as unlike anything they had seen before, writing, "I ain’t never seen anything like it. The colors were pretty and crazy."

One of the most eye-catching features was the fireball's green color. Scientists say that glow is often produced when metals inside a meteor, such as nickel or magnesium, become superheated as the space rock hurtles through Earth’s atmosphere at tens of thousands of miles per hour.

The intense heat causes those elements to vaporize and emit light, creating the brilliant green color reported by many witnesses.

A fireball is an unusually bright meteor that occurs when a piece of space rock enters Earth's atmosphere at high speed. Most burn up completely before reaching the ground, though larger objects can occasionally survive and leave meteorites behind.

At this point, experts believe Sunday's event was a natural meteor rather than a satellite or other man-made object. Scientists are continuing to analyze eyewitness reports, security camera footage and other observations to better determine the meteor's path and whether any fragments may have survived the journey through the atmosphere.

While meteors are often called "shooting stars," they are not stars at all. They are pieces of rock or metal from space that briefly light up the atmosphere as they burn up during their plunge toward Earth.

For many Mid-Southerners, the fireball provided a rare chance to witness one of nature's most spectacular nighttime displays. And given that it was visible across more than a dozen states, chances are you were not the only one looking skyward Sunday night.

Anyone who witnessed the event or captured it on camera can submit a report to the American Meteor Society as researchers continue piecing together details about the fireball's origin, path and ultimate fate.

Rebuffed by Vatican, Pompeo Assails China and Aligns With Pope’s Critics

Pope Francis declined to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is demanding a harder Vatican line on China. The Holy See said meeting just before a U.S. election would be inappropriate.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.
