Missiles Rain Down On Northern Israel In Large Hezbollah 'Revenge' Operation

Northern Israel has come under heavy attack from Hezbollah on Saturday, after this past week a full-scale war has resumed in southern Lebanon, which even saw the resumption of Israeli airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs, much further to the north.

Even while Tel Aviv maintains the illusion of a ceasefire with Lebanon (as in, its government and national army), there is no ceasefire with Iran-linked Hezbollah, following weeks of sporadic drones being sent on northern Israel, as well as troop positions of invading IDF forces.

The Saturday drone and missile waves hit multiple locations in and around the Galilee area, with regional media reporting that at least eight missiles were launched at Israeli positions in the initial salvo, one of which struck a site in Kiryat Shmona city.

Hezbollah subsequently announced it had carried out 22 military operations against Israeli army positions and equipment within the prior 24 hours. It framed this as a revenge operation for Israeli attacks on civilian centers in Lebanon.

Times of Israel has cited IDF statements saying Israel is bracing for more attacks out of Lebanon. "Hezbollah launched several rockets from Lebanon at the Western Galilee a short while ago," it said in a late in the day Saturday (local time) update. "The IDF says some of the rockets were intercepted and others struck open areas, causing no injuries."

Sirens across several towns and cities were activated, and there were scenes of coastal locales being impacted, with throngs of people scrambling for bomb shelters.

Starting early last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that he instructed his military to "press the pedal even harder" against Hezbollah, reportedly upon a greenlight being given by Washington, following increased drone attacks from the Shia paramilitary group backed by Iran on northern Israel.

Rape campaigners have reacted with fury after three teenage rapists who attacked girls as young as 14 were spared jail and handed youth rehabilitation orders, along with fines of just £26 each – “less than a parking fine”. The Mail has the story:

Harriet Wistrich, head of the Centre for Women’s Justice, has called for a review to establish whether lenient sentences are becoming the norm.

It comes after an outcry over a case in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, last week when three teenage boys were given youth rehabilitation orders, and not jailed, following attacks on girls aged 14 and 15.

In the latest cases to emerge, teenage boys convicted of rape and serious sexual assault were given fines of £26, as well as rehabilitation orders. The three separate prosecutions took place over the past year in youth courts in the North-East.

In one case, a 14 year-old boy raped a girl aged 16 or over in August 2023, and was also convicted of the sexual assault of a girl aged 15 in February 2023.

Sentenced at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on December 4th, 2025, he was given a youth rehabilitation order, ordered to pay court costs of £26 and placed on the sex offenders’ register for 30 months.

In another prosecution, a boy aged 15 was convicted of a serious sexual assault by penetration of a 14 year-old girl in April 2024.

When he was sentenced in July 2025, he was given a youth rehabilitation order, fined £26 and given a restraining order preventing him from approaching the victim.

He was placed on the sex offenders’ register for 42 months.

In a third instance, a 17 year-old male sentenced in September 2025 for the rape of a girl aged 15 was given a youth rehabilitation order, a £26 fine and put on the sex offenders’ register for 30 months. …

Ms Wistrich, of the Centre for Women’s Justice, said: “These cases are shocking. It is less than a parking fine.” …

The cases only came to light when victim advocates from the Rape and Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre (RSACC), covering Darlington and County Durham, raised concerns.

In August 2025, Burkina Faso suspended and terminated the Target Malaria project, a research initiative funded by the Gates Foundation and Open Philanthropy, which began in the country in 2012 as part of a broader international effort to use gene-based technology in disease control.

The military-led government, headed by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, ordered the immediate halt of all activities involving genetically modified mosquitoes aimed at eradicating malaria, citing biosafety risks, low impact and scientific sovereignty.

The government cited the need to prioritise public health and environmental safety over the controversial biotechnology, stating that all remaining mosquito samples would be destroyed.

Target Malaria is an international research consortium dedicated to developing and distributing novel genetic technologies to control malaria in Africa. It receives its core funding primarily from the Gates Foundation (formerly the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) and Coefficient Giving (formerly the Open Philanthropy Project Fund).

Gates is obsessed with mosquitoes. “He’s been pushing for the idea of using genetically modified mosquitoes to eliminate the disease since 2016. That’s just one year after Oxitec finished its first mass mosquito release in Brazil,” Futurism, which is a Gates fan, said.

The Gates Foundation funds genetically modified mosquito research primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, the Americas and South Asia.

In 2023, the Foundation invested US$15 million in the Transmission Zero programme, led by Imperial College London and the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania (“IHI”), in partnership with the Tanzanian National Institute of Medical Research, aiming to conduct field trials by 2027.

“The group has already successfully created and tested such a mosquito strain in Imperial’s labs, and recently announced the first transgenic (genetically modified) mosquito strain ever to be made in Africa by IHI researchers,” Imperial College boasted.

Adding, “The new funding will be used to substantially expand the operations of Transmission Zero both in the UK and in Tanzania, building increased research and supporting activities as the programme scales up.”

Past grants also supported the Target Malaria project in Mali, Burkina Faso and Uganda. In 2016, the Foundation awarded US$35 million to Target Malaria.

“With its latest award of $35 million, the Foundation has now invested a total of $75 million in the Target Malaria project, which is based at Imperial College, London. Using CRISPR gene-editing technology, the Target Malaria team has succeeded in installing a ‘gene drive’ in a malaria-transmitting species of mosquito that renders females of the species sterile,” Philanthropy News Digest said. “The Gates Foundation funding will enable Target Malaria to prepare laboratories in Mali, Burkina Faso and Uganda … Interest in gene drives has increased with the spread of the Zika virus.”

The Foundation has also funded Oxitec to develop a self-limiting strain of Anopheles albimanus for use in the Americas, eastern Africa and South Asia, it was reported in 2018. “Oxitec previously developed a self-limiting strain of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes … These mosquitoes have been previously released in Brazil.”

The Anopheles mosquito carries malaria. The Oxitec-Gates partnership is targeting Aedes aegypti because it is the species of mosquito that is a vector for dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever and yellow fever.

As threats against elected officials grow, so too does a question in the minds of many politicians — should taxpayers foot the bill for security for our elected representatives?

In February, a man was charged with allegedly planning a terrorist attack on the WA Parliament, as well as police headquarters and mosques.

In separate incidents over the past few years, people have also pleaded guilty to threatening to kill the prime minister and then-WA police minister Paul Papalia, the latter over changes to the state's gun laws.

The Australian Federal Police has reported a 63 per cent increase in "threatening, harassing, nuisance and offensive communications" directed at federal politicians over the past four years.

While no similar figures are available for WA, the issue is weighing on the minds of members of parliament.

"We live in an increasingly complex community, and I suspect these things will become more and more prevalent as time goes on, sadly so, but that is the nature of it," Premier Roger Cook said during budget estimates earlier this month.

Last year, Queensland MPs were granted up to $6,500 in each term of parliament for home security upgrades.

In offering the funding, the clerk of Queensland's parliament cited the murder of a British MP in 2021 as evidence of the need for greater protections.

It is understood no scheme exists in WA for politicians to get state funding for security upgrades, but under questioning from the opposition earlier this month, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly revealed it was something he was pushing for.

A senior lawmaker from Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU has proposed requiring Germans to use their homes to pay for elderly care, triggering a political row over social welfare amid the country’s mounting fiscal pressures.

The proposal by Albert Stegemann, deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, would tighten eligibility rules for public assistance with nursing-home costs, potentially requiring homeowners to draw on property wealth before receiving state support.

“Those who own assets must first use their own assets, including their home, before the community pays,” Stegemann told Bild on Thursday.

Germany’s long-term care system works in three stages. Mandatory insurance covers part of nursing-home costs, with patients expected to pay the remainder from their pension, savings or other assets. If those funds are exhausted, state social welfare assistance covers the gap.

Stegemann argues that homeowners should be required to draw on housing wealth before gaining access to that final layer of taxpayer-funded support.

The debate is unfolding against the backdrop of mounting strain on Germany’s welfare model. Europe’s largest economy has endured years of stagnation following the energy shock caused by the Ukraine conflict. Although Germany officially emerged from recession in 2025, growth is forecast at just 0.5% in 2026 after a new Middle East-driven energy crisis dealt another blow to its industrial sector.

Nevertheless, Germany is spending heavily on both Ukraine and its own military buildup. It has committed more than €96 billion in military and civilian aid for Kiev since 2022, while announcing a domestic €100 billion rearmament drive.
