New Member Of Trump's Iran Negotiating Team Comes From FDD Think Tank

Amid stalled peace talks and a US blockade on Iranian ports, the Trump administration has added a new member to its negotiating team who comes from the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a notoriously hawkish think tank that has been lobbying for aggressive action against the Islamic Republic for many years.

Nick Stewart, the head of the FDD's lobbying arm, has joined the office of US envoy Steve Witkoff, journalist Alex Marquardt first reported on his Substack on Friday.

The White House confirmed the appointment to Marquardt, calling Stewart a "sharp, seasoned policy expert who is a valuable asset to Special Envoy Steve Witkoff’s talented team."

Stewart worked in the State Department during the first Trump administration under then-US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook, who oversaw the increasing economic sanctions regime following the US withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, known as the Iran nuclear deal.

"Hiring a FDD staffer onto your team strongly suggests that reaching a diplomatic deal is not Trump's objective," Trita Parsi, an Iran expert who works as the executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, wrote on X in response to Stewart’s appointment.

However, White House spokesperson Olivia Wales confirmed later of Stewart:

“He brings a wealth of leadership and Iran policy experience to the role - from serving at the Department of State in the first Trump Administration and on Capitol Hill - and is a trusted voice as Special Envoy Witkoff works in lockstep with President Trump and his entire national security team to make a deal that is good for the United States and the world.”

Iran has reportedly submitted a new proposal to the US to reach a complete end to the war within 30 days, and President Trump has already cast doubt on it and suggested he'd rather continue the conflict.

"I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years," the president wrote on Truth Social on Saturday.

Man in court charged with planning to kill Dutch princesses

A 33-year-old man has appeared in court in The Hague charged with threatening the lives of two of the three Dutch princesses.

During the preliminary hearing, Anne Romke van der H denied via his lawyer that he wanted to kill princess Amalia and her sister Alexia. He was arrested in February after a hotel he was staying in called the police because he would not stop screaming about killing people from the balcony of his room, the AD reported.

Police found two axes with their names and“Sieg Heil”carved into the handles in his room, along with a note listing their names and the word“bloedbad”– although these were just three of the many words on the piece of paper, the public prosecutor admitted in court.

The prosecutor also said Van der H had said during a police interview that he believed he was in a romantic relationship with Amalia. The axes, he told police, were needed to go on survival training with Amalia.

His lawyer told the court that Van der H had “absolutely no intention of harming the princesses” and said“bloedbad 400”was the name of the“training mission in Poland”. He asked the court to release his client from custody so he could undergo psychiatric treatment, the AD said.

The court sided with the public prosecutor, who told the court that the suspect had been in a clinic last year and said that he was “not afraid to stab people”. He had also been spotted near the palace gardens, which was “serious enough” to merit being remanded in custody, the court said.

Van der H has also been charged with verbally insulting several police officers in different incidents.

The next pro forma hearing is on July 27.

National war memorial in Amsterdam daubed with red paint

The national war memorial on the Dam in central Amsterdam was sprayed withredpaint in the early hours of Monday morning, just hours before the Remembrance Day commemorations.

The monument, where the king and queen and other dignitaries will lay wreaths on Monday evening, takes center stage in the annual televised event, in which the Dutch remember their war dead with two-minutes silence.

Cleaners were out in force on Monday morning to remove the paint, which included the word“genocide”.

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema condemned the action as an “unbelievably cowardly act” in a message on social media. Prime minister Rob Jetten described it as “idiotic and completely unacceptable”.

This is especially the case on May 4, Jetten said on social media. “Today, let us be united and reflect together in silence,” he said.

There have been continued efforts by some campaigners to widen the scope of the May 4 commemorations to remember all victims of war.

Last year the monument was attacked with red paint during a large pro-Palestine demonstration in the capital.

Police said later on Monday morning they were looking for three suspects caught on camera defacing the monument.

Who is Clinton Cornell? New Naval Academy Commandant Will 'Forge Warriors'

Cornell, a 2001 USNA graduate, said he's "excited" to return to his old stomping grounds.

Come June, Clinton Cornell will take the reins as the 92nd U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) commandant and is ready to "forge warriors" in current and future midshipmen.

The USNA announced April 28 that the Dickson City, Penn., native and 2001 USNA graduate will officially step into the role during a graduation ceremony this June. He earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at the USNA prior to graduating from the National War College, where he earned a master's degree in national security studies.

Cornell will oversee roughly 4,400 midshipmen, being compared to a dean of students at a civilian university who is responsible for day-to-day conduct, military training and professional development.

“I am honored to serve as commandant of Midshipmen,” Cornell said in a statement. “It is a privilege to lead the brigade of midshipmen as we forge warriors—leaders of character grounded in accountability, discipline, and a relentless commitment to war fighting excellence.

"I am excited to return to the Naval Academy, and my family looks forward to joining a team dedicated to strengthening a culture of readiness and resilience as we prepare the next generation of Navy and Marine Corps leaders to deter conflict and, when called, fight and win.”

He will step into the role amid some recent turmoil. In November 2025, then-Commandant Gilbert Clark, Jr., also a USNA graduate (1998), was relieved about six months into his own tenure.

USNA Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michael Borgschulte cited “a loss of confidence in his ability to effectively lead the Brigade of Midshipmen” as reasoning for his ousting. Austin Jackson, a Navy SEAL and former troop commander at the secretive SEAL Team 6, has been interim commandant since Clark's departure.

From San Diego to Annapolis

The new role involves Cornell and his family moving across the country, from San Diego, Calif., to Annapolis, Md.

He is currently serving as commander of the San Diego-based Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group ONE (EODGRU-1), which according to Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) clears explosive hazards to provide access to denied areas, and employs advanced tactics and technologies to exploit and secure the undersea domain for freedom of maneuver.

Cornell, according to the USNA, is designated as an EOD Warfare officer with qualifications as a special operations officer, surface warfare officer, deep sea diving officer, combat craft patrol officer and naval parachutist.

His sea duty and operational tours have included deployment to Bahrain as a damage control assistant on the USS Dextrous; officer in charge of EOD Mobile Unit TWO Detachment 12; officer in charge of Riverine Squadron THREE Detachment Three; operations officer of EOD Mobile Unit FIVE; executive officer of EOD Mobile Unit TWO; and commanding officer of EOD Mobile Unit TWO.

'Project Freedom' to Use Missiles, 15k Personnel to Open Strait of Hormuz

Iran's regime already claimed on Monday to have hit a U.S. warship with missiles.

U.S. Central Command announced Sunday that the newest military strategy to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to broader commercial shipping is through what it calls "Project Freedom."

Project Freedom, according to CENTCOM, began Monday, May 4, in response to the blockade that has resulted in major shipping delays worldwide and had negative repercussions on oil markets. The mission, being given the green light by President Donald Trump, is supporting merchant vessels seeking to freely transit through the essential international trade corridor.

The mission involves guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 land and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms, and roughly 15,000 service members.

“Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade,” Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, said in a statement on Sunday.

On Monday, Iran's Fars news agency claimed that two of the nation's missiles hit a U.S. warship near Jask Island after it ignored Iranian warnings. That claim was labeled as fiction by CENTCOM, which put out a brief response on X: "No U.S. Navy ships have been struck. U.S. forces are supporting Project Freedom and enforcing the naval blockade on Iranian ports."

The Strait of Hormuz has become more widely known for being a major oil chokepoint, providing roughly 25% of the world’s oil trade at sea in addition to significant volumes of fuel and fertilizer products. The effect on gas prices has been especially true in the United States, where the national average on Sunday according to AAA was $4.46 for a regular gallon of unleaded—up from an average of $4.43 on Saturday and $4.09 one week earlier.

The regions of the U.S. getting hit hardest per AAA are the West and Midwest. Californians on Sunday were paying an average of $6.10, followed by residents in Nevada, Oregon and Washington all paying at least $5.16 and above. Residents in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio were paying between $4.82 and $4.93 per gallon.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is among lawmakers voicing support for Project Freedom, writing on X on Sunday that he "totally agrees" with his longtime ally President Trump.

"It is clear to me that Iran is playing games through negotiations as their last offer to end the conflict was absurd," Graham wrote. "Again, I hope this conflict can end diplomatically, but it is now time to regain freedom of navigation and forcefully respond to Iran if they insist on terrorizing the world. Enough with this terrorist regime’s behavior."

Maritime Partnerships Step Up

This mission follows an initiative jointly pushed by the Department of Defense and U.S. State Department last week, to enhance what CENTCOM described as a more coordinated effort to share information with international partners in support of maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Described as the Maritime Freedom Construct (MFC), its objective involves combining diplomatic action with military coordination. Its creation was approved by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as first reported April 28 by the Wall Street Journal. A cable stated that MFC participation entails diplomacy, information sharing, sanctions enforcement or naval presence, etc.

"The MFC constitutes a critical first step in the establishment of a ​post-conflict maritime security architecture for the Middle East. This framework is essential ⁠to ensuring long-term energy security, protecting critical maritime infrastructure, and maintaining navigational rights and ​freedoms in vital sea lanes," the cable said.

The Netherlands remembered its war dead with two minutes’ silence at 8pm on Monday evening.

Thousands of people packed into Dam square in Amsterdam city centre for the ceremony at the national war memorial, where king Willem-Alexander and queen Maxima, prime minister Rob Jetten and other dignitaries and military chiefs laid wreaths in memory of those who died.

According to the organising committee, some 16,000 people were at the main ceremony in the Dutch capital, but there were smaller ceremonies at memorials all over the country.

A group of some 20 activists arrived at the Dam before the main ceremony but were asked by police to put away their banners stating “never again means now”.

“I don’t understand why. This is so subtle,” said pro-Palestine activist Frank van der Linde. “We do not need to disturb the peace.” Van der Linde was later escorted away by police.

The monument itself had been cleaned from the red paint which had been sprayed across its base in the early hours of Monday morning. Police are looking for three people responsible for daubing the memorial, who were caught on film cycling away from the site.

At 8pm the crowd fell silent for two minutes. As is traditional in the Netherlands, public transport came to a standstill, there were no take-offs and landings at Schiphol airport and cafes and restaurants all over the country paused serving and talking.

Earlier in the evening, Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema had called for more focus on the role of women during war. “Women are never on the sidelines, they are at the front,” she said in a speech ahead of a silent march from the Museumplein to the Dam.

“They are there as soldiers, as doctors, as journalists, as mothers, as defenders of freedom in the widest sense of the word,” she said. “And in the Netherlands, women were often the focal point of the resistance.”

Women’s bodies and sexuality still have a central role in war, she said. “Systematic rape and belittling, forced sterilisation and abortion – they all took place during the Holocaust and in countless conflicts since then.”

On Tuesday, the Netherlands celebrates Liberation Day, with parties, festivals and neighbourhood communal meals all over the country.

The COVID Playbook Returns: Energy Rationing & The Politics Of Crisis Control

Anytime the pointy shoes get to decide who will and who will not get something, you must realise that you’re about to get royally screwed.

The uncomfortable parallels between the Convid response and the proposed fuel rationing plan cannot be ignored.

On the surface, the Fuel Response Plan looks more restrained than Covid. It’s incremental, it defers to markets in early phases, and it explicitly frames escalation as a last resort. Officials are at pains to say Phases 3 and 4 are unlikely. Then again, we saw the same BS with the Covid scam. This is deliberate positioning.

The architecture of this plan is strikingly familiar…

The Structural Parallels

Escalating powers are dressed as prudent planning.

Covid began with “two weeks to flatten the curve.” The fuel plan begins with “monitor and inform.” In both cases, the framework is designed to normalise the existence of extraordinary powers before they’re used.

Phases 3 and 4 — rationing, purchasing limits, directed distribution — are legally and politically pre-legitimised by their inclusion in a published plan. The plan doesn’t just prepare for a crisis; it prepares the public to accept an intervention they haven’t yet been asked about. Most notably there is no consultation mechanism.

This is pure top-down central planning. The illusion of democracy should be well and truly shattered. Sadly, I suspect the sheep will fall for it… again.

Ministerial discretion is the operative mechanism. The Fuel Security Ministerial Oversight Group decides when to move between phases, guided by six criteria — none of which are automatic triggers. Ministers “will consider a broad range of information” and “assess the full picture.”

This is identical to the Covid Alert Level system, where Ashley Bloomfield and Jacinda Ardern effectively held unchecked discretion over the country’s movement. The criteria provide political cover, not genuine constraint. It was a smokescreen, and so is this.

Consultation theatre. Phases 3 and 4 are labelled “under consultation” — but consultation with whom, on what timeline, with what veto power?
