A motion for a “permanent stay of proceedings” was filed by a Canadian legal group to try and stop a $290 million class-action lawsuit filed by disgruntled Ottawa residents against the Freedom Convoy leaders.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) said in a press release that its lawyers have filed a motion for a permanent stay of proceedings in the case and hope the suit will be dropped.

“The integrity of the justice system depends on transparency between all parties,” constitutional lawyer James Manson said about the case.

“When one side secretly enters into an agreement with a defendant that requires cooperation against others, and then does not disclose that agreement immediately, as required by law, the basic fairness of the process is fundamentally undermined. Courts cannot permit litigation to proceed on a foundation that has been compromised in this way.” Continue…

A Barrow County jury has found Colin Gray guilty of second-degree murder and multiple other charges connected to the September 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School that left four people dead. The verdict came Tuesday after jurors deliberated for several hours following two weeks of testimony, reports CBS.

Gray was indicted on 29 counts, including second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and cruelty to children. He had pleaded not guilty. He faces up to 30 years in prison for the murder convictions. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

The case stems from the actions of his son, Colt Gray, who was 14 at the time of the shooting. Investigators allege the teen carried a semiautomatic assault-style rifle onto a school bus on Sept. 4, 2024, with the barrel protruding from a book bag wrapped in poster board. Authorities say he left a second-period class, retrieved the weapon from a bathroom, and opened fire in a classroom and hallway areas.

Killed were students Mason Schermerhorn, 14, and Christian Angulo, 14, along with teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. Another teacher and eight students were injured. Prosecutors said the teen had planned the attack and left behind a notebook outlining steps for the shooting and a diagram of his classroom.

During closing arguments, prosecutors argued that Colin Gray supplied the firearm and ammunition despite signs of his son's deteriorating mental state. They pointed to prior incidents and what they described as a “shrine” to Nikolas Cruz.

“After seeing sign after sign of his son's deteriorating mental state, his violence, his school shooter obsession, the defendant had sufficient warning that his son was a bomb just waiting to go off,” Barrow County Assistant District Attorney Patricia Brooks told jurors. “And instead of disarming him, he gave him the detonator.”

Canada is fast approaching its 100,000th death from Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), a grim milestone that puts it way ahead of every other nation.

Health Canada reported that 76,475 Canadians had died under MAID as of December 31, 2024. New cases were arriving at roughly 45 per day, with 2024 alone recording 16,499 deaths. Even if approvals have steadied in recent months, the government’s own trajectory suggests the 100,000th death could come in early June, weeks before the 10th anniversary of Bill C-14, which first legalized doctor-assisted suicide.

“This spring, we’re about to hit our 100,000th individual,” said Canadian anti-MAID activist Kelsi Sheren on a podcast with British rapper Nzube Udezue, known as Zuby, according to the National Post. Sheren has tracked the milestone closely, warning that the country is approaching a six-figure tally in assisted deaths.

Canada legalized MAID in 2016, years after the Netherlands and Belgium, which began allowing assisted suicide in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Unlike Belgium, Canada does not yet permit assisted suicide for patients suffering solely from mental illness, a step planned for early 2027, but the pace of deaths isnt slowing down.

Even as a later adopter, Canada’s MAID numbers have surged faster than any other jurisdiction. In 2020, assisted deaths jumped 36.8 percent from 5,461 to 7,451, then climbed another 34.8 percent to 9,842 the following year. If trends continue, Canada could surpass the combined totals of every other country with legal euthanasia in a single year.

New Zealand, comparatively, has recorded roughly 1,000 deaths since 2021, Spain 697 in its first three years, and Colombia 692 between 2015 and 2023. In the US, state-level assisted suicide has existed since 1998, with total deaths reaching 5,329 across all states by 2022.

Even in Europe, long-standing euthanasia programs have produced smaller totals. Switzerland tallied 8,738 deaths over 20 years, Belgium 33,647 over 21 years. Only the Netherlands reports a higher share of assisted deaths relative to total mortality—5.8 percent versus 5.1 percent for Canada—but the larger Canadian population means more individual lives lost: 16,499 in 2024 alone, compared with 9,958 in the Netherlands.

The Durham Regional Police Service is warning residents that a high-risk offender serving a life sentence for first-degree murder has been released into the community under a temporary absence permit.

Darren Scott Ray, 65, has been granted an unescorted temporary absence (UTA) and is residing in Oshawa under court-imposed conditions, police said. The release is part of the federal correctional system’s supervised reintegration process.

Ottawa Police Service Not Participating in Federal Gun Buyback

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) says it will not be participating in the federal government’s gun buyback program, joining a number of municipal police forces that have said the same.

Ottawa police made the announcement in a March 2 statement, saying participation in the program “would place undue strain on the police resources dedicated to core policing duties.” The police service added that factors like staffing pressures and a rising demand for police services also contributed to the decision.

“We support efforts to reduce firearm-related harm, and we recognize the objectives of the federal program. At the same time, decisions like this have to be grounded in what can be delivered safely and consistently,” OPS Chief Eric Stubbs said in the statement.

While the OPS said it will not participate as a designated collection site in the federal buyback program, it continues to support “the safe surrender and disposal of unwanted firearms.” The OPS said those looking to surrender a firearm should call the Ottawa police’s non-emergency line and follow instructions on how to safely surrender the firearm. The hate crime unit of the Toronto police is investigating after gunfire hit a North York Jewish synagogue this week, resulting in damage to the building but no reported injuries.

The incident occurred at Temple Emanu-El in Toronto’s North York district, where officers arrived in response to a report of gunfire shortly before 11 p.m. on March 2. Congregants had been celebrating the holiday of Purim at the synagogue earlier that evening.

Toronto Deputy Police Chief Robert Johnson told reporters at a March 3 press conference that officers found bullet holes in the front windows of the synagogue and shell casings on the ground upon arriving at the scene.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called the incident “an unacceptable act of anti-Semitism and intimidation” in a March 3 social media post.

“Toronto’s Jewish community has the right to practice their faith without fear, intimidation, or violence,” she said on X, adding that city police would increase officers’ presence in the area to keep congregants and community members safe.

Defence Minister David McGuinty said the recently slain Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had spread his “evil” influence in Iran and elsewhere, but Ottawa is now calling for a diplomatic resolution to hostilities.

McGuinty made the comments to reporters while on a visit to Australia on March 3, after being asked whether Canada believes the death of Khamenei is a positive development. Prime Minister Mark Carney initially backed the U.S. attack on Iran on Feb. 28.

Khamenei and many other Iranian leaders were killed over the weekend, soon after the United States and Israel launched a bombing campaign in Iran.

“The Ayatollah Khamenei has been for many, many decades a very, very powerful force for evil in Iran and in the region,” McGuinty said.

The defence minister noted the Iranian regime’s use of proxy groups in the region and its involvement in “organized criminal syndicates.” Iran has been the key benefactor to groups like Lebanese Hezbollah, Palestinian Hamas, the Yemeni Houthis, and various Shia factions in Iraq.

Provincial sex registry found unconstitutional by Ontario court

Ontario’s sex offender registry law will need to be overhauled by the legislature after it was ruled unconstitutional by the Ontario Court of Justice in a January 29 ruling.

Justice Davin Garg agreed with arguments made by the convicted applicant’s lawyer that the law was too broad and infringed on his client’s Charter right to liberty.

The registry was established in 2000 as a centralized database designed to assist the police in the prevention and investigation of sexual offences. The legislation behind it created a requirement for sex offenders to provide detailed personal information and report regularly to law enforcement, with the aim of keeping the registry current.

However, last year Ontario man, Michael Roberts, intentionally failed to report after doing so for 13 years. He had been convicted in 2010 of multiple sexual assaults, sentenced to a term in prison, then released. Subsequently, he was registered on the national and Ontario sex offender registries.

His decision not to report resulted in a charge under the Ontario registry law.

His lawyer argued before an OCJ judge in Hamilton in January that his deliberate non‑compliance was meant to spark a constitutional case against the Ontario registry.

Roberts challenged mandatory registration of all sex offenders and the lifetime reporting obligation for certain offenders. His lawyer argued that these components of the law were “overbroad” and grossly disproportionate, infringing s. 7 of the Charter (life, liberty and security of the person).

In making the case, Roberts’ lawyer followed arguments made in a Supreme Court of Canada challenge against the national sex offender registry. In R. v. Ndhlovu, back in 2022, a majority of the SCC found that mandatory registration and lifetime reporting violated s. 7. Continue…

Notorious child rapist and killer Michael Rafferty has been convicted of assault with a weapon after attacking an inmate in the prison where he is serving time for the brutal murder of eight-year-old Victoria (Tori) Stafford, National Post has learned.

Charges of assault with a weapon and threatening death or bodily harm followed a jailhouse confrontation after years of Rafferty being targeted for abuse from fellow inmates because of his status as a child sex offender.

The incident provides a rare look inside Canada’s prison culture.

At the time of the attack, an inmate had taunted Rafferty, threw garbage into his cell, and said he was going to boil water to throw at him, said Rafferty’s lawyer, Sylvie Bordelais.

“People, as usual, were threatening him. He went to the guards to ask them for help, they told him to deal with it himself. That’s what he did,” Bordelais said in an interview when asked about the case.

Rafferty then went to the kitchen where the inmate was apparently preparing to boil water. Rafferty grabbed a pan and swung it at the inmate, she said.

Rodney Stafford, father of Tori — who was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by Rafferty and Rafferty’s then girlfriend, Terri-Lynne McClintic, in 2009 — was not upset to hear Rafferty is having a miserable time in prison.

“I hope he’s living in fear every day of his life,” Stafford said in an interview. Continue…

We can’t forget Mark Middleton, the Bill Clinton advisor who facilitated Epstein’s White House visits, and who was found in Arkansas, hanging from a tree by an extension cord around his neck, and with a ‘self-inflicted’ shotgun wound to the chest.

Clear suicide, right? That’s what the authorities said.

Yesterday (3), news arose of a Russian mogul (or Magnat) who called convicted Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell his ‘soulmate’, and was found dead in a luxury Moscow apartment.

"Unknown Projectile" Strikes Container Ship In Strait Of Hormuz As Maritime Crisis Explodes

This morning has been very active on the maritime security front. The latest incident involves a container ship that was struck by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reports that a container ship about two nautical miles off Oman, transiting eastbound through the critical and narrow waterway, was "hit by an unknown projectile just above the waterline, causing a fire in the engine room."

"The crew have now abandoned the vessel and all crew are accounted for with no reported injuries," the maritime security center wrote in an update on X.

UKMTO's alert did not identify the container ship by name, but there are currently three transiting the paralyzed waterway. We suspect that the vessel hit was "Safeen Prestige," though there is no official confirmation.

The stated reason was that parallel investigations could produce conflicting witness statements that defense lawyers might exploit.

The Fix Is In To Defeat Alberta Independence

Last week, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced a referendum for October 19. It will ask Albertans a slate of policy and constitutional questions. Independence, she said the next day, will be added to the ballot if the requisite number of signatures is met in the petition drive, which is likely.

Albertans will get their chance to say if they want to leave Canada.

But Canadian federalists can relax. The Alberta premier is one of them.

The referendum is the fix to defeat Alberta independence.

It will undermine the separatist cause and split the independence vote.

Smith’s referendum will ask whether the province should exercise more control over immigration, social programs, and voter identification. And whether Alberta should pursue constitutional amendments. Give provinces the power to appoint judges to superior courts? Abolish the unelected Senate? Grant provinces the right to opt out of federal programs in areas of provincial jurisdiction without losing federal funding? Give provincial laws priority over federal ones when they conflict?

These referendum questions lead nowhere. Alberta already has constitutional authority over the policy questions. It could exercise more control in these areas tomorrow if it wanted. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a March 4 statement that Kevin Brosseau, who is currently commissioner of Canada’s Fight Against Fentanyl, will also become senior associate deputy minister of National Defence and commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard.

Brosseau, who formerly served as deputy commissioner of the RCMP, was appointed to the newly created position of fentanyl czar in February 2025. The PMO said that in his role, Brosseau was to work “closely” with his counterparts in the United States to accelerate Canada’s work to detect and dismantle the fentanyl trade.
