India has successfully launched its heaviest commercial communications satellite to a low earth orbit.
The Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) LVM3 ‘Baahubali’ rocket launched the BlueBird Block-2 communication satellite of US-based AST SpaceMobile from Sriharikota in southern India.
“LVM3-M6 successfully and precisely injected the BlueBird Block-2 communication satellite in the intended orbit,” ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said on Wednesday.
“We are strengthening the foundations for future missions such as Gaganyaan, expanding commercial launch services and deepening global partnerships,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X. “This increased capability and boost to self-reliance are wonderful for the coming generations.” Continue…

A British and a Canadian free speech campaigner have demanded an investigation after they were arrested by Belgian police for peacefully demonstrating against giving children puberty blockers.

@lois_mcl_miller, a spokesman for the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), and Chris Elston, a campaigner known as @BillboardChris, have formally requested an investigation and demanded compensation after they were arrested on the streets of Brussels in June for expressing views about the harmful effects of hormone-altering drugs on children.
The challenge is likely to inflame tensions between Washington and European allies in an escalating row over freedom of speech protections.
The US state department said at the time that it was “looking into the matter” and that it “strongly supports the peaceful freedom of expression for all”.
The two campaigners were standing in a square in the centre of the Belgian capital having conversations with passers-by while wearing signs that read “children cannot consent to puberty blockers” and “children are never born in the wrong body”.
Mrs Mclatchie-Miller, who is British, had initially called the police for help after they were harassed while trying to conduct interviews and a crowd formed around them.
Footage of the incident shows the pair being surrounded by four police vehicles and 14 officers who asked them to stop filming and said they had to remove the signs or face arrest.
The pair were held in custody for several hours, searched, and had their signs confiscated and destroyed but were never charged.
Mr Elston, a campaigner from Canada who is known for travelling across the world wearing sandwich boards with messages on them and engaging people in conversation about the subject, claimed he was stripped down to his underwear.
Mrs McLatchie Miller and Mr Elston have now written to the Belgian government, the chief of police, the mayor’s office, the ombudsman and the police watchdog to demand an investigation into their arrest, acknowledgement that their free speech rights were violated, and appropriate compensation.

Canadian church destroyed in arson attack just before Christmas

Arson is suspected in the destruction of a rural church in British Columbia, Canada. The Island Gospel Church was engulfed in flames on Dec. 20 and authorities responding to the scene immediately suspected foul play.
Twenty firefighters responded to the fire and it took four hours for them to put the fire out. They stayed on to clean up for several hours after, as well. There were no injuries and two areas of the church, the auditorium and classroom, were saved, said Maple Ridge News.
A 19-year-old suspect has been arrested after an investigation and a search warrant was acted upon. "He has been charged with break and enter commit an indictable offence therein, arson, and intentionally or recklessly cause damage by fire or explosion to property," reports My Bulkley Lakes Now. Ottawa is easing its ban on single-use plastics to allow exports to the United States, saying the policy’s environmental benefits do not justify the economic costs.
The environment department on Dec. 20 provided notice of proposed amendments to the single-use plastics prohibition regulations that would lift the ban on the production, import, and sale of single-use plastics for export, while maintaining domestic restrictions.
The notice was issued the same day the export ban was set to take effect, as first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter, with Ottawa saying the domestic economy is now facing pressures that did not exist when the regulations were drafted in 2022.
“The prohibition on export will not fulfil an environmental objective commensurate to its economic impact,” the environment department wrote in a regulatory impact analysis statement. “The prohibition on export is not required to ensure that the regulations effectively protect the environment from the harms of plastic pollution.”
Ottawa is retaining the domestic portion of the prohibition regulations—which ban the manufacture, import, and sale of six single-use plastic items, including straws, grocery bags, six-pack rings, stir sticks, cutlery, and disposable polystyrene food containers—saying the measures “remain effective” in achieving the regulations’ environmental objectives.
The ban on manufacturing and importing for most of the products took effect in December 2022, and the ban on selling the products came into force a year later. Continue…

Toronto police say they’ve located the mother of an infant who was found in the Yonge Street and Broadway Avenue area.
Toronto Police Service spokesperson Stephanie Miceli said the baby was found on Dec. 21 around 10:40 a.m.
“A newborn baby was located and taken to hospital. The baby’s mother has also been located. Both are receiving care,” Miceli told The Epoch Times in an email.
She said police would not be releasing further details.

Canada’s border agency says its officers in British Columbia recently confiscated more than 26 kilograms of cocaine concealed within a container that was declared as a shipment of frozen fruit from Colombia.
The drugs were discovered by officers at the Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility on Oct. 31 with the help of detector dogs, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said in a Dec. 22 press release.
The officers found 23 bricks of cocaine hidden in the ceiling of the shipping container, the agency said. The drugs, which weighed 26.2 kilograms in total, were handed over to the drug and organized crime investigators unit within the RCMP.
“This successful seizure is a direct result of the vigilance and dedication of the CBSA officers who keep our country safe,” CBSA Pacific Region regional director general Nina Patel said in the press release.
CBSA officers in British Columbia have made 10,428 narcotic seizures between January and October this year that included 727 kilograms of cocaine, the agency said.
A large portion of the confiscated cocaine was discovered within a shipment of vehicle parts at Vancouver International Airport during a Sept. 3 inspection. Continue…

A 25-year-old Prince Edward Island man is facing what the RCMP are describing as the first hate crime charges laid in the province after a lengthy investigation into “anti-Semitic” social media posts.
Matthan Runighan has been charged with public promotion ofa hatred against Jews and wilful promotion of anti-Semitism in connection with the investigation, the RCMP said in a Dec. 23 press release.
The RCMP said the investigation was launched earlier this year after it received several complaints about social media posts.
The initial investigation led police to execute a “public safety” warrant at a P.E.I home where police said officers seized a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition.
Runighan was arrested and charged with four firearm offences, including illegal possession of a firearm on Aug. 7 in connection with the search.
He was released on conditions which police allege he breached three times in August and September. He was arrested in September and was released by the court after a remand hearing, the RCMP said. Continue…

Demetrios Nicolaides sent a letter to all parents before the holiday break reminding them Christmas is about celebrating the “birth of Jesus Christ.”
“This is a special season to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the event that serves as a cornerstone of faith and brings the world a message of hope, peace, and love. It is a time to reflect on this profound gift and look forward with faith and optimism to the year ahead,” Nicolaides wrote in his letter to parents.
Nicolaides, a Christian who serves in Premier Danielle Smith’s provincial government, told parents that their dedication to “nurturing the next generation reflects the spirit of service and charity that the Incarnation of Christ inspires in us all.”
“The support you give to your children makes a tremendous difference in their success and well-being,” he added.
Nicolaides’s comments caused a stir online, with some challenging them and others praising them.

Toronto police have identified the victim in a shooting near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus.
Shivank Avasthi, 20, is the city’s 41st homicide victim of the year, the Toronto Police Service (TPS) said.
TPS said officers responded to a call for unknown trouble in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area on Dec. 23, around 3:34 p.m. They located a man with a gunshot would, and the victim was pronounced dead on the scene. TPS said the suspect fled the scene before they arrived.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says five people have been hospitalized in an E. coli outbreak connected to a recall of some Pillsbury brand Pizza Pops.
The agency said 23 people reportedly got sick with the bacteria in seven provinces after eating or handling the affected products. The cases were reported between early October and late November and have included three in B.C., nine cases in Alberta, five in Saskatchewan, two in Manitoba, two in Ontario, one in New Brunswick, and one in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The public health agency said they estimated that for every reported case, there are 32 unreported cases in the community.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall of some of Pizza Pop products on Dec. 21 due to possible E. coli contamination.
Those who are infected by E. coli bacteria can spread it to other people over several days or weeks, even if they don’t have symptoms, according to the health agency.
Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, severe stomach cramps, and mild fever. Most symptoms will end in five to 10 days, the health agency said. Continue…

The U.S. Department of State has announced sanctions against a number of individuals including the British head of the Global Disinformation Index (GDI) Clare Melford, whose organization issued a report this summer listing “digital denialism” of Canadian residential schools as one example of “hate speech” that harms democracy.
Undersecretary of State Sarah Rogers linked to a Sept. 25 GDI report on hate speech in Canada in an X post to announce Melford’s travel ban, saying that GDI has interfered with speech on American platforms, including by labeling opinions that “question” the nature of Canadian residential schools as hate speech.
“If you question Canadian blood libels about residential schools, you’re engaging in ‘hate speech’ according to Melford and GDI,” Rogers wrote Dec. 23 on X. “This NGO used StateDept taxpayer money to exhort censorship and blacklisting of American speech and press.”
For its part, a GDI spokesperson said the travel bans are “an authoritarian attack on free speech and an egregious act of government censorship,” adding that they are “immoral, unlawful, and un-American.”
The issue of residential schools in Canada has garnered further international attention since a 2021 announcement by the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation in B.C. that ground-penetrating radar had identified possible burial sites of 215 “missing children” at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.
No excavations have been conducted at the site to confirm the claim.

Edmonton man dies in hospital ER while waiting to see doctor

Sreekumar's blood pressure continued to rise, and just seconds after finally being called in for treatment, he passed away of what appeared to be a cardiac arrest.
On December 22, an Edmonton man was rushed to the emergency room by a client after experiencing serious chest pains at work.
Just hours later, 44-year-old Prashant Sreekumar was dead.
According to Global News, upon arriving at Grey Nuns Hospital, Sreekumar checked in at triage and was sent to the waiting room. When his father, Kumar Sreekumar, pulled up a short time later, he told him and the the the pain was a 15 out of 10. Staff were informed as well.
An electrocardiogram was performed, which came back with no issues. As a result, he was told to sit tight and given a Tylenol.
Over the following eight hours, Sreekumar's blood pressure continued to rise, and just seconds after finally being called in for treatment, he passed away of what appeared to be a cardiac arrest.
Along with his father, Sreekumar leaves behind a wife and three children. He was a beloved member of the community, as well.
In a statement to Global News, Grey Nuns Hospital's parent organization Covenant Health said it would not comment on the case, but that it is before the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
"We offer our sympathy to the patient's family and friends," Covenant Health added. "There is nothing more important than the safety and care of our patients and staff."
