A Norwegian marine fuel supplier just learned a harsh lesson in geopolitics after its attempt to cut off the U.S. military backfired spectacularly.

The Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF) was created in 2003-2004 with the Hubble Space Telescope staring for a long time toward near-empty space so that distant, faint galaxies would become visible. One of the most famous images in astronomy, the HUDF is featured here in a vibrant way with sonified distances. Pointing to a galaxy will play a note that indicates its approximate redshift. Because redshifts shift light toward the red end of the spectrum of light, they are depicted here by a shift of tone toward the low end of the spectrum of sound. The further the galaxy, the greater its cosmological redshift (even if it appears blue), and the lower the tone that will be played. Smooshing for Science: A Flat-Out Success

The Perseverance team is always looking for creative ways to use the tools we have on Mars to maximize the science we do.

On the arm of the rover sits the SHERLOC instrument, which specializes in detecting organic compounds and is crucial in our search for signs of past microbial life. But finding these organics isn’t easy.

The uppermost surface of most rocks Perseverance finds on Mars have been exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun and the long-term oxidative potential of the atmosphere, both of which have the potential to break down organic compounds.

For this reason, obtaining SHERLOC measurements from a “fresh” rock face is ideal. Last week the rover cored a serpentine-rich rock aptly named “Green Gardens,” resulting in a fresh pile of drill tailings.

To get this material ready for the SHERLOC instrument, which requires a smooth area to obtain a measurement, the science team did something for the first time on Mars: We smooshed it!

Using the contact sensor of our sampling system, designed to indicate when our drill is touching a rock as it prepares to take a core, Perseverance pressed down into the tailings pile, compacting it into a flat, stable patch for SHERLOC to investigate.

This unorthodox approach worked perfectly! The resulting SHERLOC spectral scan of these fresh tailings — which include serpentine, a mineral of key astrobiological interest — was a success.

These flattened drill tailings are a great example of how a bit of out-of-the-box (or out-of-this-world!) thinking helps us maximize science on Mars.

With this success behind us, the rover is rolling west toward the heart of “Witch Hazel Hill,” where more ancient rocks — and who knows what surprises — await!

China Discovers Massive Thorium Deposits, Potential "Limitless" Energy Source

China has reportedly discovered a vast thorium deposit that could provide enough energy to power the country for 60,000 years, according to a declassified national geological survey. The discovery was made at the Bayan Obo mining complex in Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region in northern China, where scientists estimate the site could yield one million tonnes of thorium if fully exploited.

The survey, which identified 233 thorium-rich zones across the country, suggests that thorium resources in China's mining waste remain untouched and could be extracted to reduce global dependence on fossil fuels. Researchers claim that just five years' worth of mining waste from the Bayan Obo iron ore site contains enough thorium to meet U.S. energy demands for over 1,000 years.

Thorium is a naturally occurring, slightly radioactive element that has long been considered a potential alternative to uranium in nuclear reactors. Unlike uranium, thorium is not directly fissile but can be converted into uranium-233, a material capable of sustaining nuclear fission. In a molten-salt reactor (MSR), thorium is mixed with lithium fluoride and heated to 1,400°C (2,550°F), where it undergoes neutron bombardment to initiate a chain reaction. This process is more efficient than conventional uranium reactors, produces significantly less nuclear waste, and reduces the risk of nuclear meltdowns.

China has been investing heavily in thorium-based nuclear technology and has started construction on the world's first thorium molten-salt reactor (TMSR) power station in the Gobi Desert. The facility is expected to generate 10 megawatts of electricity and is projected to be operational by 2029. Beijing has positioned thorium reactors as a key element of its long-term energy independence strategy and a way to reduce reliance on coal and imported fossil fuels.

Thorium is estimated to be 500 times more abundant than uranium-235, the primary fuel used in conventional nuclear reactors. According to the World Nuclear Association, thorium can generate 200 times more energy than uranium, making it a promising alternative for the future of nuclear power. However, experts caution that cost-effective extraction and commercial development of thorium-based reactors remain a challenge.

The discovery comes as China moves forward with its plans to build 24 new nuclear power plants by 2030, further expanding its investment in nuclear energy. As Beijing advances its thorium reactor program, researchers continue to study the potential of thorium as an energy source. A Beijing-based geologist, speaking anonymously, noted that thorium is widely available and suggested that its large-scale use could contribute to long-term energy stability.

Milpitas Open Space Authority director dies

Mike Flaugher, a longtime Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority director who represented Milpitas on the board, died on Saturday, Feb. 22.

As director of District 2, Flaugher also represented communities from North San José and Berryessa.

He first joined the authority as a member of the Citizen Advisory Committee in 2012 before being elected to the board in 2014.

“Mike was a terrific partner in getting things done,” said board chair Helen Chapman in a release.

“No matter how complex the issue, he focused on the work and on fulfilling his own personal commitment to protecting the environment. … He championed these values in all the organizations he served.”

Throughout his extensive public service career, Flaugher held leadership roles in organizations including the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council, Berryessa Citizens Advisory Council, Berryessa Business Association, Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Volunteer Coordinating Committee and the San José Parks and Recreation and Neighborhood Services Commission.

An Air Force veteran, Flaugher served in the Air force Reserves for 15 years and worked for National Semiconductor for 20 years.

The authority will publicly honor Flaugher at a future board meeting. The board of directors will decide whether to fill the District 2 vacancy through a special election or by appointment.

“As we remember Mike Flaugher, we honor his legacy of service and the positive impact he has had on his community,” said Andrea Mackenzie, the authority’s general manager.

“His vision and efforts will guide us as we work to continue connecting the communities we serve to the open spaces he so dearly cherished.”

The Special Relationship: A Brief History of US Aid to the UK

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has promised a return to “responsible global leadership,” hinting that there might be appetite for renewed ambition as a foreign aid donor. But few realise that the UK was itself a recipient of substantial overseas aid. As President Trump takes office, there is an opportunity to reassess the US approach to international partnerships based on interests. In this blog, we look at the foundations of the so-called “special relationship” between the US and the UK and undertake new analysis of US non-military financial assistance to the UK following the Second World War.

We find that the UK received a loan from the United States in 1947 that was the largest ever single-year financial transfer (in inflation-adjusted terms) that the United States has ever made. That support topped all other US Government foreign assistance for decades, and it took nearly sixty years to pay it off. We also look back at the United States's rationale for giving over $3.75 billion ($36 billion in 2019 terms).

Post World War II support to UK and others

The modern era of US foreign assistance starts after World War II, and begins with significant economic assistance to the European powers (UK, France, and Italy) and Japan and Taiwan. But no country received more assistance than the UK.

The initial loan to the UK was one (loan) payment of $3.75 billion ($36 billion in 2019 prices). The initial loan was worth 1.5 percent of US GDP at the time and with the UK economy a quarter of the size of the US’ (in terms of spending power), this effectively added over 6 percent to the UK’s total expenditure. If the loan’s terms were similar to those of a World Bank IDA loan, the grant-equivalent would be around half of the face-value.

It would be over 50 years before another country would match or exceed even the nominal value of this early contribution, when the United States provided $3.8 billion to Poland in 2003 (though this was military rather than economic worth $5.2 billion in 2019 terms) and a year later the United States provided $3.86 billion ($5.1 billion in 2019 terms) in economic assistance to Iraq (data here).

The 53rd Wing activated on May 11 the F-35 Partner Support Complex, a U.S.-owned facility here that handles F-35 Lightning II testing.

Robert Kraus assumed the new position as the complex’s director, making it the first civilian-led unit in the wing. Kraus, a retired lieutenant colonel, served as the 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron commander and 53rd Electronic Warfare Group deputy commander at Eglin Air Force Base prior to this new position.

The F-35 PSC is charged with providing mission data, intelligence support, lab facilities and training to the eight partner countries purchasing the fifth-generation aircraft.

"The growth of the PSC will relieve that pressure, as well as ensure our coalition partners are ready to participate in any future operations," Kraus said.

The partner countries include: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Italy,Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Turkey. These countries provided critical design input and funding during the early stages of the F-35 program, which differs from foreign military sales customers.

"The PSC will directly support the partners, who currently have no indigenous capability to create mission data for the F-35," Kraus said.

The complex will interact with mission data programmers and data analysts from the partner nations. According to Kraus, one of the key projects for the unit is to support the partners in the creation of two separate hardware in the loop testing facilities – only one currently exists.

The F-35 PSC started as a small team within the 513th Electronic Warfare Squadron at Eglin AFB, which provides F-35 mission data files to the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. The team staffs 24 civilian employees and contractors, with plans to grow to about 100 personnel. The new unit will report to the 53rd EWG.

While the mission of the complex has been ongoing for nearly five years, Kraus sees the formalization of the unit as a step forward.

"The formal activation of the unit will give me a greater ability to support the partners in their efforts," he said. "(I can now) elevate the partner support functions to an equal level with U.S. squadrons, as opposed to a subordinate role."

Plans are in the works for two separate buildings to hold the new unit and partner nation personnel. This includes the Australia/Canada/United Kingdom Reprogramming Laboratory building and the Norway/Italy Reprogramming Laboratory building. Additional support will be provided to Denmark, the Netherlands and Turkey.
