Multiple Iranians Indicted in Hack of Trump Campaign

Multiple Iranians have been indicted by a grand jury in connection to the hacking of members of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, Politico reported Thursday.

ABC News reported earlier Thursday that the Justice Department would be announcing charges on Friday. Names of the defendants and the specific charges were not reported by either outlet.

Trump’s campaign has been notified, according to the ABC News report.

The FBI and other intelligence agencies said earlier this month that Iranian hackers stole information from Trump’s campaign and provided it to President Joe Biden, when he was still running for reelection.

Both the Biden and now nominee Kamala Harris campaigns have maintained that they did not accept any stolen material related to the hack. The agencies said the hacking efforts continue. Microsoft reported on Aug. 8 that Iranian hackers had “sent a spear phishing email in June to a high-ranking official on a presidential campaign," according to Politico.

The report of impending charges comes amid intelligence briefings Trump received this week regarding ongoing assassination threats from Iran.

"Intelligence officials have identified that these continued and coordinated attacks have heightened in the past few months, and law enforcement officials across all agencies are working to ensure President Trump is protected and the election is free from interference," Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung said in a statement.

Russians warned to back up Google data

The Alphabet subsidiary has restricted the creation of new accounts in the country, according to Moscow’s digital ministry

Russian Google users should create backup copies of their data, Moscow’s Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media has warned, as the tech giant’s parent company Alphabet has begun preventing users from registering new accounts in the country.

The ministry said that the confirmation of authorization via text messages sent to Russian telephone numbers is still working for previously created accounts, but warned that “there is no certainty that this feature will remain in effect.” It added that users should switch to other methods of two-factor authentication.

Google operates over 40 digital services, including the Google search engine, Gmail email, Google Drive cloud storage and YouTube video hosting. Some of them are available for users without registration.

Earlier this month, some Google users in Russia faced problems while trying to verify their identity via SMS, with the service reporting an error. Alphabet has not commented on the introduction of new restrictions related to Russia.

The company said it was deactivating AdSense accounts in Russia in August. The service allows users to earn money from placing advertisements on their content, which are managed by Google. Alphabet said at the time that it would no longer be able to make payments to users of its advertising service in the country.

YouTube, Google’s video-hosting platform, started experiencing slowdowns in Russia over the summer. Lawmakers attributed the issues to Google’s failure to upgrade its equipment in the country since the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

Google has been under pressure in Russia for several years, particular in relation to YouTube’s deletion of channels belonging to Russian media outlets, including RT, public figures, bloggers, journalists, and artists, who have positions that differ from Western narratives.

The US tech corporation stopped displaying ads to users shortly after the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict in February, 2022, having paused monetization for content makers. In July, Russia’s media and digital watchdog, Roskomnadzor, saidthat Google has blocked access to more than 200 YouTube channels in Russia.

Zelensky has no ‘tangible’ peace plan – Kremlin

The Ukrainian leader has nothing to offer his Western backers, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has no genuine plan to resolve the conflict with Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at a press briefing on Thursday.

Peskov was asked whether Moscow would consider it a threat to Russia’s sovereignty if the West were to accept the Ukrainian leader’s “victory plan” which he reportedly presented during his visit to the US this week.

According to The Times, Zelensky’s new scheme, which has not yet been made public, consists of four points – the continuation of Kiev’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region, Western security guarantees for Ukraine, the delivery of modern weapons, and international financial assistance for the country.

Peskov stressed that Zelensky’s latest plan does not contain any specifics, even for Kiev’s Western backers.

“Therefore, there can be no talk of any sort of adoption [of the plan],” he said.

Bloomberg previously reported, citing sources familiar withZelensky’s conversations with foreign leaders, that his ‘victory plan’ has underwhelmed Western officials as it contains no “real surprises” and is not a game-changer. One source described the initiative as nothing more than a “wish list” thatunderscores “a deepening sense of pessimism among allied nations”regarding the outcome of the Ukraine conflict.

In an interview with ABC News earlier this week, Zelensky claimed that “we are closer to peace than we think.” However, he stressed that his latest scheme is not about negotiating with Russia but about “the strengthening of Ukraine.”

'Moscow reiterated on Tuesday that the only way the conflict with Kiev can end is withRussia achieving all the goals of its military operation “one way or another.”

Turbulence in the Sun’s corona

Solar wind is a never-ending stream of charged particles coming from the Sun.

Rather than a constant breeze, this wind is rather gusty.

As solar wind particles travel through space, they interact with the Sun's variable magnetic field, creating chaotic and fluctuating motion known as turbulence.

This video confirms something long suspected: the turbulent motion of solar wind begins very close to the Sun, inside the solar atmosphere known as the corona.

Small disturbances affecting solar wind in the corona are carried outward and expand, generating turbulent flow further out in space.

By blocking out direct light coming from the Sun, the Metis coronagraph instrument on Solar Orbiter is able to capture the fainter visible and ultraviolet light coming from the solar corona.

Its high-resolution images show the detailed structure and movement within the corona, revealing how solar wind motion already becomes turbulent at its roots.

The red-tinted ring in the video shows Metis observations made on 12 October 2022.

At the time, the spacecraft was just 43.4 million km from the Sun, less than a third of the Sun–Earth distance.

The video of the Sun in the centre of the video was recorded by Solar Orbiter’s Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) on the same day. (Read more about Solar Orbiter’s instruments here.)

“This new analysis provides the first-ever evidence for the onset of fully developed turbulence in the Sun’s corona.

Solar Orbiter’s Metis coronagraph was able to detect it very close to the Sun, closer than any spacecraft could approach the Sun and make local measurements,” explains Daniel Müller, ESA’s Solar Orbiter Project Scientist.

Turbulence affects how solar wind is heated, how it moves through the Solar System and how it interacts with the magnetic fields of planets and moons it passes through.

Understanding solar wind turbulence is crucial for predicting space weather and its effects on Earth.

‘Metis observation of the onset of fully developed turbulence in the solar corona’ by Daniele Telloni et al. was published today in Astrophysical Journal Letters.
