FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A South Florida man tried to obtain more than $4.2 million in COVID-19 relief funds by filing false loan applications, federal prosecutors said.

Valesky Barosy, 27, made his first appearance last week in Fort Lauderdale federal court, according to court records. He's charged with five counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering and one count of aggravated identity theft. If convicted, Barosy faces up to 132 years in prison.

Today we have information showing that some of the children that Governor Wolf seems to believe are that big of a deal coming into the country along the Southern Border and flown to the Northeast are being shipped to a location in New York. The governor was correct in saying ‘children passed through’ but the number of adults on the flights appears to be material and includes some criminal characters, and the Governor’s lack of concern for these children is sad as well

Tennis fans and pundits have reacted to the news that Novak Djokovic has been granted permission to compete at the Grand Slam in Melbourne

The confirmation that Novak Djokovic will compete at the Australian Open after receiving a medical exemption has met with a mixed response, with some claiming it is a damning insult to locals.

Djokovic revealed on Tuesday that he will be appearing at the season-opening Grand Slam in Melbourne later in January, saying he had been granted “exemption permission” for the tournament.

Organizers also confirmed the news in a statement which said that the nine-time champion had been given a medical exemption following “a rigorous review process involving two separate panels of medical experts.”

Despite False Miscarriage And HIV Test Results, Elizabeth Holmes Escaped Charges Of Fraud Against Patients

For those that didn't see the headline yesterday, former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty on 4 counts of fraud and conspiracy after weeks of deliberation and a trial that almost ended with a deadlocked jury.

In a note jurors sent to the judge overseeing the Holmes trial on Monday morning, jurors said that they had been unable to reach a unanimous verdict on 3 of the 11 counts against Holmes, the WSJ reported, raising the specter of a hung jury.

But by the afternoon, the jury was able to return a unanimous decision.

Most surprisingly was that Holmes was found guilty of defrauding investors, but wasn't found guilty of any charges involving defrauding patients. As the Wall Street Journal reported this morning, that is especially surprising given the nature of the testimony given by patients during the trial.

Among the testimony was stories from numerous patients describing test results that they believed were "simply wrong", the Journal wrote. One such result told a woman she could be HIV positive; another incorrectly told a pregnant woman that she could be miscarrying.

Scientists from drug companies testified that Theranos' technology was "unimpressive", the Journal wrote. One even called Holmes "cagey".

CDC Admits 61% Of Teens Hospitalized For COVID-19 Had Severe Obesity

One of the only silver linings of the pandemic has been that young people are less affected by COVID-19 than the elderly. In fact, the most vital indicator of negative COVID-19 outcomes is age: Unlike the Spanish flu, which ravaged armies that were overwhelmingly comprised of otherwise healthy young people during World War I, COVID-19's death toll is dramatically skewed toward those who have already lived many years. (For context, the average age of death from Spanish flu was 28.)

That said, about 600 Americans under the age of 18 have died of COVID-19 during the pandemic. A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) took a closer look at young people who were hospitalized for COVID-19 in July and August, while the delta variant wave took hold, and largely found that healthy young people continue to mostly evade the worst of COVID-19.

The study found that most young people who suffer severe COVID-19 outcomes had underlying health conditions. The most common, especially for teenagers, was obesity.

"Among patients aged 12–17 years, 61.4 percent had obesity," according to the study, "60.5 percent of whom had severe obesity."

The study looked at six U.S. hospitals—all of them in the American South—and evaluated 915 cases of COVID-19 in adolescents that required hospitalization. The vast majority were hospitalized for COVID-19, though some had other infections as well. Of the 713 patients who were primarily hospitalized for COVID-19, two-thirds had at least one underlying health condition. For the teenage cohort—patients at least 12 years of age—the obesity rate was 61.4 percent. The severe obesity rate was 60.5 percent. Just one of the eligible patients had been vaccinated, and 11 patients died in total.

What this means, of course, is that COVID-19 can be a fatal disease, even for young people - but vaccine status and general health are extremely important variables. It remains the case that healthy children who do not have underlying health conditions—particularly obesity—are by and large safe from negative COVID-19 health outcomes.

"Compared with patients without obesity, those with obesity required higher levels and longer duration of care," wrote the study's authors.

"These findings are consistent with previous reports and highlight the importance of obesity and other medical conditions as risk factors for severe COVID-19 in children and adolescents."
