Russia predicts revival of ISIS & ‘caliphate 2.0’

Moscow says that risks from militant groups worldwide have not gone away

Terrorism threats in unstable regions in the Middle East and Afghanistan still remain a key threat to Russia’s safety, Moscow has cautioned, speculating that radicals could be making gains on the African continent.

Speaking to RIA Novosti on Wednesday, Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov said that “the situation for counterterrorism remains very tense. The environment remains difficult in Syria and Iraq, where the main destabilizing factors are the holding of the Idlib de-escalation zone by radical groups and the presence of ISIS and Al-Qaeda cells.”

The official went on to add that “in Africa, especially in the Sahara-Sahel zone, [the Russian Foreign Ministry] can essentially observe the preconditions for… the revival of the terrorist ‘caliphate version 2.0’ there.”

Syromolotov also said that Moscow is “closely monitoring the situation in Afghanistan”, where there is a high level of terrorist threats from the ISIS and Al-Qaeda sympathizers who have settled there after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban this summer. He cautioned that this poses a risk for Russia and Central Asian states.

ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and the Taliban are designated as terrorist organizations and banned in Russia.

Russia could bring back death penalty - court chair

Capital punishment has not been applied by Moscow since 1996

The moratorium on capital punishment imposed in Russia in 1997 after the country joined the Council of Europe could be lifted in the future, the chairman of the country’s Constitutional Court said on Tuesday.

In a book published on the website of the court, Valery Zorkin suggested that the country return to the doctrine of national identity and that constitutional control means Moscow should make its own laws, rather than take influence from other countries in Europe. In Zorkin’s view, the introduction of a moratorium on capital punishment was a concession to values which are not inherent in Russia.

“The fact that the Constitutional Court has made a decision making it impossible to use the death penalty in Russia at this historical stage of its development does not rule out the possibility of a return to this form of punishment in the future,” Zorkin said.

Russia has an indefinite moratorium on the application of capital punishment, which was a prerequisite for joining the Council of Europe. However, the death penalty has not been formally abolished. A constitutional court ruling could change that.

According to Zorkin, the death penalty cannot be completely ruled out, as there will always be the existence of premeditated murders.

In the USSR and Russia, he death penalty was imposed for various crimes until the mid-1990s. The moratorium on the death penalty appeared in 1997, when Moscow signed the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms concerning the Abolition of the Death Penalty.

In practice, the death penalty had already not been applied for a year, despite it still existing in the criminal code.

The move to reinstate capital punishment has been backed by some lawmakers, including MP Mikhail Sheremet from the ruling United Russia party.

“We are too late with this question. Lifting the moratorium on the death penalty is a necessary and justified measure. This decision should have been made long ago,” he told news agency RIA Novosti. “The death penalty would be a kind of inoculation against paedophiles and maniacs, who cause great damage to the security and morality of our society.”

“We do not need to follow Western stereotypes and imposed dogmas of behavior. I think it is appropriate to put the issue of the return of the death penalty to public discussion,” he said.

PETA Investigator Finds 360 Dead Dogs During Investigation Into NIH Abuse of Beagles

The NIH was recently accused of horrible cruelty to dogs being experimented on. A recent PETA investigation is confirming this abuse.

FOX News reports:

The National Institutes of Health was accused of involvement in a $1.2 million contract over the past decade to purchase beagles for cruel experiments, said PETA senior vice president of cruelty investigations Daphna Nachminovitch on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.“

The most recent alleged violation is from Virginia-based supplier Envigo, which is accused of providing nearly 5,000 beagle dogs and puppies to NIH and other labs to be confined and tortured.

During a PETA investigator’s visit, more than 360 dogs were allegedly found dead.

The judge presiding over the Ghislaine Maxwell sex trafficking trial has asked jurors to continue attending court ahead of the New Years period, expressing concern over the speed of spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

There was no new activity until 4:45 p.m. when the jury sent its latest note that read, “Our deliberations are moving along and making progress,” and then requested to be dismissed at 5 p.m.

He has indicted a cybersecurity lawyer named Michael Sussmann for allegedly making a single false statement in a conversation in 2016 with then-FBI General Counsel Jim Baker. The allegedly false statement concerned not Trump or Russia, but whom Sussmann represented when he brought Baker some information about an alleged electronic connection between the Trump Organization and a Russian bank. (Disclosure: Baker is a personal friend and former colleague at Brookings and Lawfare.)

The indictment is, in other words, far removed from the grave FBI misconduct Durham was supposed to reveal. Very far removed. In fact, it doesn’t describe FBI malfeasance against Trump at all, but portrays the FBI as the victim of agitprop brought to it by outside political operatives. It describes the FBI as diligently running down the leads it had been fed by these operatives and then, well, dropping the matter when it learned they had no merit. The misconduct it portrays is an alleged lie by Sussmann that is, at best, wholly peripheral to the substance of the allegations Durham was supposedly peddling.

Even taken on its own terms, the document is one of the very weakest federal criminal indictments I have ever seen in more than 25 years covering federal investigations and prosecutions. It depends in its entirety on the testimony of a single witness who is on the record, under oath, saying something rather different from what the indictment alleges. The indictment itself, as I’ll explain, also contains a number of facts that tend to undercut its central allegation.

The Biden administration is "actively preventing the effective distribution of monoclonal antibody treatments" for treatment of COVID-19, according to Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo.

Pfizer Partnered With China’s Vaccine Passport Platform, Admits Being ‘Proud To Stand With China Leaders.’

Pfizer Inc partnered with a Chinese Communist Party payment platform which has been used to implement “vaccine passports” in China since the outbreak of COVID-19. The company said it was “proud to stand with China leaders.”

The pharmaceutical giant – whose U.S. lobbying efforts hit an all-time high in the past year – expressed its pride for the brutal, communist regime in the following tweet from June 6th, 2018:

“We are proud to stand with China leaders & @Alipay to introduce new, digital solutions to improve disease education and vaccine access-creating a brighter future for Chinese children,” the tweet reads.

“We are honored to be a partner in China’s ‘Internet + Vaccination’ initiative,” reads an accompanying graphic, quoting Pfizer’s China General Manager Wu Kun.

The message also revealed the firm’s partnership with Alipay, a Chinese online payment platform originally founded as an offshoot of the Chinese Communist Party-linked company Alibaba.

Alibaba has also been involved in the “research, production, and repair of weapons and equipment for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA)” and has a “deep record of cooperation and collaboration” with China’s “state security bureaucracy,” according to Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation at the U.S. State Department Christopher Ford.

The State Department has also flagged the company as a “tool” of the Chinese Communist Party, aiding in its build-up of “technology-facilitated surveillance and social control.”

Despite these ties, Pfizer partnered with the platform in 2018, as outlined in the company’s annual review:

“We’re using the Alipay platform, which has over 700 million active users in China, to provide much needed education about disease and vaccinations. Oklahoma Judge Denies State’s Request to Stop National Guard COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate

An Oklahoma federal judge on Tuesday ruled against an attempt from the state to block the Department of Defense’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for National Guard members.

U.S. District Judge Stephen Friot rejected a motion from Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R), Attorney General John O’Connor, and sixteen Oklahoma Air National Guard members for a preliminary injunction to the mandate, saying the plaintiffs’ claims were “without merit,” and thus the motion would be denied.

Stitt and Attorney General John O’Connor, both outspoken critics of vaccine mandates, filed a motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the vaccine mandate on Dec. 3, 2021.

In a complaint (pdf) which names President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and dozens more federal officials and agencies as defendants, the state argued that the mandate violates the Constitution and has no legal basis.

“This vaccine mandate certainly interferes with the sovereign prerogatives of the State of Oklahoma. It undermines the laws, public policy, dignity, and interests of the State of Oklahoma in governing the field of public health, including vaccinations,” the state wrote in its complaint.

However, in a 29-page ruling this week, senior District Judge Stephen P. Friot wrote that “the court would be hard-put to find that the public interest would be served by entry of an order prohibiting the implementation of a vaccine mandate which adds one FDA-approved vaccine to the list of nine that all service members are already required to take–that tenth vaccine being the one which has been shown to be remarkably effective in mitigating the effects of the pandemic which has affected millions of Americans, including thousands of service members.”

Washington State Democrats Push Bill Reducing Penalties for Drive-By Shootings

Washington state Reps. Tarra Simmons (D) and David Hackney (D) are pushing legislation to remove drive-by shootings from the list of crimes that elevate first degree to murder to a higher degree of murder carrying a mandatory life sentence.

FOX News reports that “drive-by shootings were added to the list of aggravating factors for murder charges in 1995.” At the time, drive-by shootings were one of a number of crimes that would elevate charges and Simmons and Hackney are now working to remove such shootings from the list.

The 1995 language that Simmons and Hackney want to specifically strike from the aggravating factors list says: “The murder was committed during the course of or as a result of a shooting where the discharge of the firearm… is either from a motor vehicle or from the immediate area of a motor vehicle that was used to transport the shooter or the firearm.”

Simmons says she believes the language surrounding drive-by shootings “was targeted at gangs that were predominantly young and Black.”

She added, “I believe in a society that believes in the power of redemption. Murder is murder no matter where the bullet comes from but locking young people up and throwing away the key is not the answer.”

Simmons points to Kimonti Carter as a example of why she wants to remove drive-by shootings from the aggravating factors list. Carter was convicted in a drive-by shooting that left two people dead in 1997. He received a 777-year sentence and Simmons said, “If he had been standing outside of the vehicle at the time, he would’ve faced 240-320 months in prison. Instead, he was sentenced to life in prison with no opportunity for parole because of this law.”
