Melbourne Man Lights Himself on Fire Over Victoria’s Vaccine Mandates

A Melbourne man set himself on fire on New Year’s Day in an apparent protest against Victoria’s draconian COVID vaccine mandates.

Though police were able to extinguish the flames, the man has suffered life-threatening injuries. His current condition is not publicly known.

The man was on a busy street in Victoria when he pulled out a gas can and began dosing himself in it in front of diners and other witnesses.

Lydia O’Connor told The Herald Sun that she was dining nearby where the man was and heard him screaming about the vaccine mandates.

“He poured gas on himself and on his car. It was on purpose,” O’Connor said. “He was screaming about mandates. He was screaming: no vax ID and throwing books.”

She said that his burning flesh was stuck to her shirt.

Another witness told the paper that “he was off his face screaming about the mandates” and that his “skin was burning.”

Police officers, firefighters and five bystanders helped to put out the blaze. The driver’s side of his vehicle was left blackened and charred.

The Metro reports that “in November, Victoria introduced sweeping vaccine mandates for several industries, requiring workers to get the jab or show proof of medical exemption if they want to continue working onsite.”

“It applies in healthcare settings, schools, construction sites, retail and transport as well as several other industries.”

‘Despicable relic’: Epstein, Maxwell’s little black book scares off collectors

This little black book is too hot to handle.

Auction houses, collectors and true-crime experts see a limited market for Jeffrey Epstein’s “creepy” phone book listing names and numbers of the rich and famous. The scandalous book was used as evidence to help convict the late pedophile’s madam Ghislaine Maxwell this week for trafficking underaged girls for sex.

“It is unfathomable that Heritage Auctions or any other reputable auction house would ever offer such a despicable relic,” said Robert Wilonsky, spokesman for Dallas-based Heritage, which also has a location in Midtown.

“I wouldn’t buy it. Way too creepy for me,” celebrity Las Vegas pawnbroker Rick Harrison of History Channel’s “Pawn Stars” told The Post.

“But I’m sure Bill Clinton would pay millions for it,” he laughed. The former president was a known guest at Epstein’s Florida mansion.

One version of the book, a 92-page collection of typed contacts compiled by Maxwell and Epstein, was leaked by Gawker in 2015, and includes names and phone numbers of more than 1,000 celebrities, politicians and titans of business, including Prince Andrew, Alec Baldwin, Tony Blair, and Michael Bloomberg. Gawker claimed it found the directory in court documents.

The individuals listed in Epstein’s book have not been accused of or associated with any of Epstein’s or Maxwell’s crimes.

At least two copies of the directory existed. Staff at Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion were told to make sure there was a copy of the directory at both his and Maxwell’s bedsides, according to evidence submitted by prosecutors in her trial.

Prosecutors are expected to hold the directory used in the trial in a secure location pending an appeal from Maxwell. Its future after the appeals process is uncertain. Judge Alison Nathan ruled earlier this month that only a limited amount of material from the British socialite’s contacts book would be released under seal.

Experts say the Epstein/Maxwell directory seeps into the realm of “murderabilia” — collectibles associated with heinous crimes which kills their value. Decades later, removed from the news of the times, the value of such items often grows.

“I’m not sure a lot of people would be comfortable offering it,” said Joshua Mann of B&B Rare Books in Manhattan.

The limited potential market for the black book appears to contradict an insatiable demand for celebrity collectibles, one in which even Elvis Presley’s soiled undies can net $8,000.

Maxwell was convicted Wednesday on five of six charges, including sex-trafficking of minors, which carries a maximum sentence of 40 years.

Bizarre: Texas town sees fish fall from the sky during rainstorm

Texarkana, a town on the border of Texas and Arkansas, recently experienced a bizarre phenomenon as there were widespread reports in the area of fish falling from the sky during a rainstorm.

The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday afternoon as a storm swept through the area. Numerous residents posted pictures of the bizarre phenomenon as it unfolded.

While local residents may have understandably been concerned that they were in the middle of some sort of biblical plague, particularly after the bizarre events of 2021, local officials rushed to ensure residents that this was a completely natural phenomenon.

According to KTAL-TV, city officials told the station that the phenomenon is known as "animal rain," and can happen when water spouts pass over lakes and rivers, sucking up fish, frogs, crabs, and other marine wildlife into the sky.

Then, as a National Weather Service meteorologist told KTVT-TV, the science is pretty simple: "What goes up, must come down."

"They are picked up with the wind and come down like any debris does. They could have been picked up somewhere like Lake Texoma, [but] they could have come from anywhere," meteorologist Gary Chatelian continued.

One car dealership employee, James Audirsch, described the scene to KTAL: "There was a loud crack of thunder and when we opened up the bay door. I looked outside and it was raining real hard and a fish hit the ground, and then I said, ‘It’s raining fish!’ Brad was like, ‘No it’s not,’ and I’m like, ‘No, it really is!’ and fish were droppin’ here and everywhere."

Some of the fish were noted to be as large as 4-5 inches long and appeared to be white bass, according to Audirsch.

According to the Library of Congress, "animal rain" has been reported for hundreds of years, and used to be dismissed by scientists as a fable. However, with the advent of cell phones and video cameras, individuals who witnessed animal rain were more capable of proving their claims, as many residents of Texarkana did by recording it with their cell phones.

The Great Pyramid was built of limestone and granite throughout, the two kinds of rock being combined in a peculiar and significant manner. The stones were trued with the utmost precision, and the cement used was of such remarkable quality that it is now practically as hard as the stone itself. The limestone blocks were sawed with bronze saws, the teeth of which were diamonds or other jewels. The chips from the stones were piled against the north side of the plateau on which the structure stands, where they form an additional buttress to aid in supporting the weight of the structure. The entire Pyramid is an example of perfect orientation and actually squares the circle. This last is accomplished by dropping a vertical line from the apex of the Pyramid to its base line. C. Piazzi Smyth notes that the positions of the stones demonstrate that they were set in place

from above–which made it necessary for a considerable number of workmen to depart from the upper chambers. How did they do it? Smyth believes they descended through the well (see diagram), dropping the ramp stone into place behind them. He further contends that robbers probably used the well as a means of getting into the upper chambers. The ramp stone having been set in a bed of plaster, the robbers were forced to break through it, leaving a jagged opening. Mr. Dupré, an architect who has spent years investigating the pyramids, differs from Smyth, however, in that he believes the well itself to be a robbers' hole, being the first successful attempt made to enter the upper chambers from the subterranean chamber, then the only open section of the Pyramid.

Supreme Court’s Roberts Says Judges Must be Ethical After Over 100 Caught Violating Rule

The chief justice of the Supreme Court in his year-end report called on federal judges to work hard to adhere to ethics rules after over 100 were caught violating a rule that requires judges recuse in any matter in which they have a personal financial interest.

Chief Justice John Roberts cited (pdf) a Wall Street Journal investigation that uncovered violations by 131 federal judges across 685 cases between 2010 and 2018.

The George W. Bush nominee portrayed the number of violations as small, noting that they represented less than three-hundredths of one percent of the 2.5 million civil cases filed in the district courts in years studied.

“Let me be crystal clear: the Judiciary takes this matter seriously. We expect judges to adhere to the highest standards, and those judges violated an ethics rule. But I do want to put these lapses in context,” he said.

The wording drew a response by James Grimaldi, one of the Journal investigators, who said his team investigated tens of thousands of cases, not 2.5 million.

“The Jour­nal’s ini­tial tally was an undercount; it was impossible because of the peculiarities of the judiciary’s financial-disclosure process and incomplete information available on case litigants,” Grimaldi wrote on Twitter, adding that Roberts’ comment “is technically accurate, the suggestion that we could review millions of cases is misleading.”

W.H.O. Gifts Leader Tedros an Uncontested Election in 2022

World Health Organization (W.H.O.) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will run for a second term at the helm of the organization in May 2022 unopposed, despite presiding over one of the most embarrassing episodes in the history of the agency: the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.

The W.H.O. holds elections every five years and requested member states nominate potential directors-general by September 23, 2021.

“Proposals will be considered at EB150 in January 2022: following an initial screening the Board will interview the proposed candidates and decide by a secret ballot on the nomination,” the W.H.O. site details. “The nomination will then be submitted to the Seventy-fifth World Health Assembly in May 2022 which will appoint the next Director-General by secret ballot.”

Next year, however, member states will only have one choice: Tedros.

Tedros defeated four other candidates to take over the role in 2017, earning a five-year term with the support of the Chinese Communist Party.

At the time, the W.H.O. was facing global condemnation for its poor management of the West African Ebola outbreak under Tedros’ predecessor Margaret Chan, now a dean at Tsinghua University, dictator Xi Jinping’s alma mater. The W.H.O. catastrophically failed to contain the Ebola outbreak despite the fact that the disease is not airborne and requires contact with the blood of an infected person to catch. The outbreak, the largest ever of that virus, lasted from 2014 to 2016 and killed over 11,000 people in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone primarily, though seven other countries – including America, the U.K., and Spain – documented cases.

Bill Gates, George Soros and Nike's Founder Made the Three Largest Donations of 2021

It was a healthy year for big gifts to charitable causes in 2021, a year that saw one of the largest multibillion-dollar contributions in more than a decade, according to a Chronicle of Philanthropy tally.

The power philanthropists Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates announced in May that they were divorcing and then gave a jaw-dropping $15 billion to their foundation in July. The money will bolster its endowment and support the grant maker’s work in global health, development, policy and advocacy and U.S. education well into the future.

The gift increased the grant maker’s endowment to about $65 billion and is the Gateses’ biggest infusion of money into the foundation since 2000, when they transferred Microsoft stock then valued at $20 million.

When they announced this year’s gift, the two philanthropists indicated they planned to continue running the foundation together for the time being but announced through the foundation that if after two years either one of them decides not to work together, then French Gates will resign as co-chair and trustee.

Regardless, the philanthropists made clear in two new Giving Pledge letters that they both intend to keep giving big in the years ahead.

French Gates wrote that she will continue to support efforts to fight poverty and “advance equality for women and girls and other marginalized groups.” Gates wrote in his Giving Pledge letter that the work of the foundation will continue to be his “top philanthropic priority” and that he plans to increase his giving in other areas like “mitigating climate change and tackling Alzheimer’s.”

Nonprofits that focus on those causes are likely to reap big rewards, given that Bill Gates’s net worth is pegged at about $137 billion and Melinda French Gates’s at $6 billion.

Meanwhile, a $500 million contribution by Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny to the University of Oregon tied for second place on the list. The gift will be used to expand the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact and follows a $500 million donation the Knights gave to launch the science campus in 2016. The Knight Campus aims to speed up the process of transforming new scientific discoveries into medical treatments and other developments to improve people’s lives.

Phil Knight, whose net worth stands at about $60 billion, earned a bachelor’s degree in business from the university in 1959. The couple have given the university a total of at least $1.6 billion to date.

Israeli medtech company receives $5m investment from European venture capital firm

Medical technology acceleration fund Sofinnova MD Start III, a project of European venture capital firm Sofinnova Partners, will invest $5 million in Israeli medical technology company Endoron Medical in a seed round to speed up the development of Endoron's technology for repairing abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), according to a statement from the fund on Wednesday.

Endoron was founded in 2019 by former CEO of Bandit Technologies Ronit Harpaz, vascular surgeon Prof. Ron Karmeli of Hadassah University Hospital and veteran mechanical engineer Eyal Teichman. The company's EndoStapling catheter-based technology for repairing AAAs builds upon a previous invention of Karmeli.

The technology aims to improve minimally-invasive surgery in lieu of risky open surgery for the potentially life-threatening condition, which is still widely employed to treat AAAs.

Endoron's solution is used to hold in place endografts - surgical grafts used in repairing such swelling of the aorta, the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the abdomen, pelvis, and legs - to provide a better seal, as well as to staple and repair grafts that have moved or developed leaks.

The $5m investment is Sofinnova MD Start's first in an Israeli company. Describing itself as "the only MedTech accelerator in Europe," Sofinnova is bringing experienced medical technology entrepreneurs in an effort to accelerate the development of Endoron's novel technology.

Harpaz praised Sofinnova's acceleration fund support and expertise, saying: "The Sofinnova MD Start team are the go-to investors in the medtech domain and are also seasoned medtech entrepreneurs who bring a wealth of operational experience working in high-growth companies like ours. With their support, I am confident we will quickly reach key clinical and regulatory inflection points as we work to bring our EndoStapling technology to the clinic."

Turkish Military Base In Northern Iraq Hit By Second Rocket Attack In A Week

Late on December 31, a rocket attack targeted a Turkish military base near the town of Zaylkan in Bashiqa district in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.

According to local reports, the Turkish military base was struck by four Grad 122 mm rockets. No casualties or material losses have been reported so far. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has not commented on the attack, yet.

This was not the first attack on Zaylkan base. It was recently targeted on December 27, on November 19, on November 7.

The rocket attack may have been carried out by Iranian-backed forces who are frustrated with Turkey’s military presence and activities in the northern region.

However, the main suspects are fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The attack is likely a response to Turkey’s ongoing military operations in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

The military base is located 20 kilometers to the northeast of Mosul city and more than 60 km to the northwest of Erbil city, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

The base was established by Turkish military back in 2015-2016, when Mosul was under control of ISIS militants. In 2016, Turkey deployed about 500 troops to the Bashiqa camp without an authorization from the Iraqi government, arguing that the move is aimed to prevent potential attacks by ISIS and the PKK militant groups. With the new escalation of Turkey’s fight against the PKK in Syria and northern Iraq, its military presence in the disputed Nineveh province is supposed to have significantly grown, despite multiple calls from Baghdad to withdraw from the area.

In April, the Turkish military and security forces launched Claw-Lightning and Thunderbolt operations to neutralize the remnants of the PKK in Metina, Zap and Avashin Basyan regions of Kurdistan. Ankara claimed that more than 500 fighters of the PKK have been killed, wounded or captured since the beginning of the operations.

Airline Travel Chaos Continues, Another 4,324 Flight Cancellations Today So Far

ABC was warning yesterday that airline travel was likely to continue with major disruptions as the industry claims Omicron impacting their operational capacity.

(VIA ABC) […] Federal Aviation Administration is warning of staffing issues of its own, such as sick air traffic controllers. In addition, the FAA warned on Thursday that weather, holiday traffic and COVID-19 “are likely to result in some travel delays in the coming days.”

Millions of Americans watched the events in Washington last Jan. 6 unfold on live television. Police officers testified to the violence and mayhem. Criminal proceedings in open court detailed what happened.

Yet the hoaxes, conspiracy theories and attempts to rewrite history persist, muddying the public's understanding of what actually occurred during the most sustained attack on the seat of American democracy since the War of 1812.

By excusing former President Donald Trump of responsibility, minimizing the mob’s violence and casting the rioters as martyrs, falsehoods about the insurrection aim to deflect blame for Jan. 6 while sustaining Trump's unfounded claims about the free and fair election in 2020 that he lost.

Spread by politicians, broadcast by cable news pundits and amplified by social media, the falsehoods are a stark reminder of how many Americans may no longer trust their own institutions or their own eyes.

Several different conspiracy theories have emerged in the year since the insurrection, according to an analysis of online content by media intelligence firm Zignal Labs on behalf of The Associated Press. Unfounded claims that the rioters were members of antifa went viral first, only to be overtaken by a baseless claim blaming FBI operatives. Other theories say the rioters were peaceful and were framed for crimes that never happened.

Conspiracy theories have long lurked in the background of American history, said Dustin Carnahan, a Michigan State University professor who studies political misinformation. But they can become dangerous when they lead people to distrust democracy or to excuse or embrace violence.

“If we’re no longer operating from the same foundation of facts, then it’s going to be a lot harder to have conversations as a country,” Carnahan said. “It will fuel more divisions in our country, and I think that ultimately is the legacy of the misinformation we're seeing right now."

An examination of some of the top falsehoods about the Capitol riot and the people who have spread them:

CLAIM: THE RIOTERS WEREN'T TRUMP SUPPORTERS

In fact, many of those who came to the Capitol on Jan. 6 have said — proudly, publicly, repeatedly — that they did so to help the then-president.

Different versions of the claim suggest they were FBI operatives or members of the anti-fascist movement antifa.

“Earlier today, the Capitol was under siege by people who can only be described as antithetical to the MAGA movement,” Laura Ingraham said on her Fox News show the night of Jan. 6, referring to Trump's “Make America Great Again” slogan. “They were likely not all Trump supporters, and there are some reports that antifa sympathizers may have been sprinkled throughout the crowd.”

The next day, Ingraham acknowledged the inaccuracy when she tweeted a link to a story debunking the claim.

We are talking about an administration that supposedly has the power to steal 88 million votes. They can't even set up fake callers and questions for their appearances.
