Wealthy donors pour millions into fight over mail-in voting

Deep-pocketed and often anonymous donors are pouring over $100 million into an intensifying dispute about whether it should be easier to vote by mail, a fight that could determine President Trump’s fate in the November election.

In the battleground state of Wisconsin, cash-strapped cities have received $6.3 million from an organization with ties to left-wing philanthropy to help expand voting by mail. Meanwhile, a well-funded conservative group best known for its focus on judicial appointments is spending heavily to fight cases related to mail-in balloting procedures in court.

And that’s just a small slice of the overall spending, which is likely to swell even more as the election nears.

The massive effort by political parties, super PACs and other organizations to fight over whether Americans can vote by mail is remarkable considering the practice has long been noncontroversial. But the coronavirus is forcing changes to the way states conduct elections and prompting activists across the political spectrum to seek an advantage, recognizing the contest between Trump and Democrat Joe Biden could hinge on whether voters have an alternative to standing in lines at polling places during a public health crisis.

Some groups are even raising money to prepare for election-related violence.

“The pandemic has created a state of emergency,” said Laleh Ispahani, the U.S. managing director for Open Society, a network of nonprofits founded by billionaire progressive donor George Soros. “Donors who haven’t typically taken on these issues now have an interest.”

How much will be spent is unclear because many of the organizations are nonprofits that won’t disclose those details to the IRS until well after the election. Even then, many sources of money will remain unknown because such groups don’t have to disclose their donors, commonly referred to as “dark money.”

Tax filings, business records and campaign finance disclosures offer some clues. They reveal a vast infrastructure that funnels money from wealthy donors through philanthropic organizations and political groups, which eventually trickles down to smaller nonprofits, many of which operate under murky circumstances.

On the conservative side, organizations including Judicial Watch, the Honest Elections Project, True the Vote and the Public Interest Legal Foundation are litigating cases related to voting procedures across the U.S.

A substantial portion of the financing comes from Donors Trust, a nonprofit often referred to as the “dark money ATM” of the conservative movement. The organization helps wealthy patrons invest in causes they care about while sheltering their identities from the public.

In other instances, funding comes from charitable foundations built by the fortunes of Gilded Age industrialists.

Litigation is a primary focus. Democrats and good-government organizations are pushing to eliminate hurdles to absentee voting, such as requiring a witness’ signature or allowing third parties to collect ballots.

Conservatives say that amounts to an invitation to commit voter fraud. As these issues wind their way through the courts, they say judges could decide complex policy matters that often were already debated by state legislatures.

“The wrong way to go about this is to run to court, particularly a week or two before an election, trying to get judges to intervene and second-guess decisions legislatures have made,” said Jason Snead, executive director of the Honest Elections Project.

Some groups are donating directly to local governments. In Wisconsin, the Center for Tech and Civic Life, a nonprofit with ties to left-leaning philanthropy, has donated $6.3 million to the state’s five largest cities to set up ballot drop boxes, help voters file absentee ballot requests and expand in-person early voting.

Colombia: Another Social Leader Assassinated In Troubled Southern Province Of Cauca

Colombian social organizations have condemned the assassination of José Gustavo Arcilla Rivera, a regional representative of the agrarian trade union and member of the community guard in the municipality of Corinto, in the troubled south western province of Cauca. The assassination follows the release last week by a respected Colombian NGO of another report documenting the high number of assassinations of social leaders during the presidency of Ivan Duque since 2018.

José Arcilla was assassinated while working on his rural property.

“The events happened around 06:00 in the morning on Sunday, when our friend was on his property, located in the village of La Cominera. An unknown person entered the property and attacked the victim with a firearm and then fled”, reported members of the National Federation of United Agricultural Unions, Fensuagro.

Arcilla was transferred to the hospital in the urban area of ​​Corinth, where he later died as a result of the injuries received.

The details of the attack are under investigation and it is still unknown if Arcilla had received threats against him prior to the attack. Facebook has removed a video posted by Breitbart News earlier today, which was the top-performing Facebook post in the world Monday afternoon, of a press conference in D.C. held by the group America’s Frontline Doctors and organized and sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots. The press conference featured Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and frontline doctors sharing their views and opinions on coronavirus and the medical response to the pandemic. YouTube (which is owned by Google) and Twitter subsequently removed footage of the press conference as well.

The video accumulated over 17 million views during the eight hours it was hosted on Facebook, with over 185,000 concurrent viewers.

The livestream had accumulated over 17 million views by the time of its censorship by Facebook.

In terms of viral velocity, the post was beating content from many other prominent accounts on Facebook today, including Hillary Clinton, Rev. Franklin Graham, and Kim Kardashian.

Over 185,000 viewers were concurrently watching the stream when it aired live Monday afternoon.

The event, hosted by the organization America’s Frontline Doctors, a group founded by Dr. Simone Gold, a board-certified physician and attorney, and made up of medical doctors, came together to address what the group calls a “massive disinformation campaign” about the coronavirus. Norman also spoke at the event.

“If Americans continue to let so-called experts and media personalities make their decisions, the great American experiment of a Constitutional Republic with Representative Democracy, will cease,” reads the event’s information page.

The event was organized and sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots.

“We’ve removed this video for sharing false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19,” a Facebook company spokesman, Andy Stone, told Breitbart News. The company did not specify what portion of the video it ruled to be “false information,” who it consulted to make that ruling, and on what basis it was made.

Stone replied to New York Times tech columnist Kevin Roose on Twitter regarding the video:

Coronavirus: US doctor claims she's cured COVID-19

A group of doctors dressed in white coats have quickly gone viral after one of them claimed to have cured COVID-19.

Dr Stella Immanuel, a Houston GP in the United States, stood with several others on the steps of Capitol Hill in Washington to say she had successfully treated more than 350 people with coronavirus using hydroxychloroquine.

The “Deliverance Minister” said she went to medical school in Nigera where she treated malaria patients with the drug, which President Donald Trump claimed could prevent or treat COVID-19.

Dr Immanuel claimed the drug worked, in the video which got more than 20 million views on Facebook and continues to spread after being removed.

“I’m here because I have personally treated over 350 patients with COVID,” she said.

“Patients that have diabetes, patients that have high blood pressure, patients that have asthma, old people … I think my oldest patient is 92 … 87 year olds. And the result has been the same. I put them on hydroxychloroquine, I put them on zinc, I put them on Zithromax, and they’re all well.”

Atlanta ‘Protesters’ Embedded Nails into Fireworks, Leaked FBI Document States

A federal law enforcement document reviewed by Breitbart Texas reports that “protesters” who attacked the Atlanta Field Office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) embedded nails into commercial-grade fireworks. The devices were reportedly discovered after the protest ended Sunday morning.

Breitbart Texas reviewed an FBI “activity alert” regarding the use of modified fireworks during the demonstrations in Atlanta, which began on July 25. The alert states that approximately 100 to 200 people dressed in dark clothing, backpacks, goggles, and helmets approached the ICE office in Atlanta. The subjects reportedly carried shields, bats, and large sticks.

Following the attack that left 20 broken windows, “bomb technicians discovered commercial grade fireworks with nails embedded in the mortar shell,” the document reads.

Images of the modified fireworks show multiple large nails embedded in the devices.

Organizers called on people to come out in “solidarity” with the “Freedom Fighters” of Portland, Breitbart Texas reported. A video tweeted from Atlanta shows multiple fireworks exploding around the doors and windows.

Man indicted for triple killing in NE Portland

A makeshift memorial stood in front of the site where the bodies of Elmer Hughes, Tashia Cobb and Lawrence Murphy were discovered on Friday. Brett Pruett was arrested and charged with three counts of murder over the weekend.

A Portland man was indicted Monday in the July 17 shooting deaths of three people in Northeast Portland.

Brett Edward Pruett, 58, faces murder charges in the killings of Elmer Edwin Hughes III, Tashia Cobb, and Lawrence Murphy, according to court records.

Prosecutors said Pruett is accused of breaking into a house on Northeast 122nd Avenue between Russell and Brazee streets, where he used a gun to kill Murphy, 77.

Court documents say Pruett allegedly killed Cobb and Hughes during the same “criminal episode” in which he killed Murphy.

Murphy lived across the street from Pruett’s listed address in 2019, according to state records.

Four days after the triple killings, the house where court records show Pruett lived was boarded up with discarded tires leaning against the garage and a derelict school bus parked in the driveway. Boards also covered the windows of the house where online records indicate Murphy lived.

Several neighbors, none of whom would give their names, said the people who frequented the two houses appeared to come and go at all hours of the day. Pruett allegedly also used a gun to seriously injure a family or household member the day before the triple homicide, the district attorney’s office said. A social media account that appears to belong to Pruett identifies the assault victim as his fiancee.

Pruett is charged with 11 counts of first-degree murder with a firearm, four counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of first-degree burglary with a firearm, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of second-degree assault constituting domestic violence.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said a bail hearing date has not been scheduled.

Court documents say Pruett has been convicted of 13 felonies and had a warrant for his arrest in San Diego. He also escaped from jail in California in 1984, according to state documents.
