U.S. business borrowings jump 20% in May - ELFA survey

U.S. companies borrowed $8.1 billion for capital investments in May, 20% higher than last year, the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) said, as an economic recovery fueled by rising vaccinations and easing curbs drove up demand.

In the second straight month of double-digit growth in borrowings, more companies lined up for new loans, leases and lines of credit compared with last year, but borrowings in May fell 17% from the previous month. “While overall industry performance is relatively strong during the first half of this year, even more robust demand for financing is being constrained by supply chain shortages in several economic subsectors,” ELFA Chief Executive Officer Ralph Petta said in a statement on Tuesday.

“With COVID-related payment modifications resolved for the most part, ELFA members report their portfolios performing well.” The index is based on a survey of 25 members, including Bank of America Corp, CIT Group Inc and the financing affiliates or units of Caterpillar Inc, Dell Technologies Inc, Siemens AG, Canon Inc and Volvo AB. Washington-based ELFA, which reports economic activity for the nearly $1-trillion equipment finance sector, said credit approvals rose to 77.4% in May from 76.3% in April.

ELFA’s leasing and finance index measures the volume of commercial equipment financed in the United States. The Equipment Leasing and Finance Foundation, ELFA’s non-profit affiliate, reported a monthly confidence index of 71.3 in June, in line with the May reading of 72.1. A reading of above 50 indicates a positive business outlook.

America's Largest Landlord Just Got Bigger: Blackstone Buys 17,000 Houses For $6 Billion

Wall Street won't rest until it become the biggest - and perhaps only - landlord in the US.

At least that's the impression one gets by observing the behavior of the two Wall Street "black" giants, Blackrock and Blackstone. As a reminder, the WSJ sparked widespread outrage recently when it exposed what most industry insiders had known for a long time, namely that Blackrock (and other institutional investors) have been ravenously gobbling up US real estate. Now it's Blackstone's turn.

On Tuesday, the WSJ reported that Blackstone - which already is not only America's largest landlord but also the world's largest real estate company with a $325 billion portfolio - has agreed to buy single-family rental company Home Partners of America for $6 billion, betting the demand for suburban housing will stay hot even as the pandemic eases. Home Partners owns more than 17,000 houses in the United States; the company buys, rents out and eventually offers its tenants a chance to buy them. Now all those functions will be done by the largest US private equity firm.....

Single-family rentals have been a favorite institutional bet over the past year, as real estate investors have sought new places to invest during a pandemic that kept Americans away from offices, hotels and malls. The result, as the WSJ reported, has been a frenzy among 200 companies and investment firms who have entered the house hunt: computer-assisted flipper Opendoor Technologies, money managers including J.P. Morgan and BlackRock, platforms such as Fundrise and Roofstock that buy and arrange for the management of rentals on behalf of individuals and builder LGI Homes Inc., which now reports wholesale home sales to bulk buyers in its quarterly results.

Abstract

Background:

Repurposed medicines may have a role against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The antiparasitic ivermectin, with antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, has now been tested in numerous clinical trials.

Areas of uncertainty:

We assessed the efficacy of ivermectin treatment in reducing mortality, in secondary outcomes, and in chemoprophylaxis, among people with, or at high risk of, COVID-19 infection.

Data sources:

We searched bibliographic databases up to April 25, 2021. Two review authors sifted for studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Meta-analyses were conducted and certainty of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach and additionally in trial sequential analyses for mortality. Twenty-four randomized controlled trials involving 3406 participants met review inclusion.

Therapeutic Advances:

Meta-analysis of 15 trials found that ivermectin reduced risk of death compared with no ivermectin (average risk ratio 0.38, 95% confidence interval 0.19–0.73; n = 2438; I2 = 49%; moderate-certainty evidence). This result was confirmed in a trial sequential analysis using the same DerSimonian–Laird method that underpinned the unadjusted analysis. This was also robust against a trial sequential analysis using the Biggerstaff–Tweedie method. Low-certainty evidence found that ivermectin prophylaxis reduced COVID-19 infection by an average 86% (95% confidence interval 79%–91%). Secondary outcomes provided less certain evidence. Low-certainty evidence suggested that there may be no benefit with ivermectin for “need for mechanical ventilation,” whereas effect estimates for “improvement” and “deterioration” clearly favored ivermectin use. Severe adverse events were rare among treatment trials and evidence of no difference was assessed as low certainty. Evidence on other secondary outcomes was very low certainty.

Conclusions:

Moderate-certainty evidence finds that large reductions in COVID-19 deaths are possible using ivermectin. Using ivermectin early in the clinical course may reduce numbers progressing to severe disease. The apparent safety and low cost suggest that ivermectin is likely to have a significant impact on the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic globally.

The WHO Just Quietly Updated Its Guidance on Childhood Vaccinations — And A Lot of Parents Have Questions

The World Health Organization issued new guidance on childhood vaccinations on Monday. The WHO’s current advice for parents who have plans to get their children vaccinated is to await further investigation of the vaccines.

“Children should not be vaccinated for the moment,” the WHO said. “There is not yet enough evidence on the use of vaccines against COVID-19 in children to make recommendations for children to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Children and adolescents tend to have milder disease compared to adults. However, children should continue to have the recommended childhood vaccines.”

The WHO’s guidance does not exactly correspond with that of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, according to its website..

CDC recommends everyone 12 years and older should get a COVID-19 vaccination to help protect against COVID-19,” the CDC says. “Widespread vaccination is a critical tool to help stop the pandemic. People who are fully vaccinated can resume activities that they did prior to the pandemic. Learn more about what you and your child or teen can do when you have been fully vaccinated. Children 12 years and older are able to get the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine.”

Nonetheless, there are reports that children are experiencing heart inflammation in rare cases, but in relatively significant numbers when compared with the minute risk that the SARS-CoV-2 virus poses to young people.

“As of June 14, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration had confirmed 323 cases of myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, or pericarditis, inflammation of the sac that surrounds the heart, in people younger than 30 who had received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines,” AHA News reported. “That’s out of more than 310 million doses administered in the U.S.”

“More than 300 cases of heart inflammation after COVID-19 vaccinations have been reported in young people across the U.S.,” NBC reported.

“This may be coincidental, a person may be predisposed to this, it may be as we see often in this vaccine that our own immune system starts reacting in an inflammatory way against our own muscles,” Dr. Michael Welch, an allergist and immunologist at Rady Children’s Hospital, told NBC 7 in San Diego.

Meanwhile, social media platforms continue to censor medical professionals and elected representatives who even question whether the experimental vaccines are safe. Last week, Canadian MP Derek Sloan reported the Facebook censored his conference’s stream for raising the childhood vaccine issue.

The WHO’s guidance, however, underscores that the vaccines are experimental (albeit they have been shown to have been effective among older and at-risk populations at bending down the COVID infection rates). It also underscores that the public should be permitted to debate the matter as citizens please without interference in the virtual public square.

Morgan Stanley Tells Staff They’ll Need Vaccines to Enter Office

Morgan Stanley told employees they will need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 to enter its New York offices, as a growing number of Wall Street firms adopt policies delaying the return of staff who aren’t protected against the deadly virus.

The bank notified workers of the policy in a memo. Just last week, Chief Executive Officer James Gorman fired off a warning shot to staff still uncertain about wanting to return to the office. “If you can go to a restaurant in New York City, you can come into the office and we want you in the office,” he said at a conference. Gorman estimated that more than 90% of employees back in the offices were already vaccinated and expected that number to inch up closer to 100%. While the bank hasn’t mandated a full return to office like Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co, Gorman said if the offices weren’t filled up by Labor Day in September, “then we’ll have a different kind of conversation.” BlackRock Inc. informed its U.S. workforce of a similar plan last week, saying it would allow only fully vaccinated workers to come back to work starting next month. Bank of America Corp. also plans to prioritize the return of vaccinated staff, bringing all of them back by early September.

The Financial Times reported Morgan Stanley’s internal announcement earlier Tuesday, noting it takes effect in New York City and Westchester on July 12 and also applies to clients and visitors.
