North Korea fires longest-range missile yet, 1st to fly over Japan in 5 yrs

North Korea on Tuesday fired a ballistic missile over the Japanese archipelago for the first time in five years, with the projectile reaching the longest distance ever for a missile launched by Pyongyang, the Japanese government said.

Japan's Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada told reporters that North Korea's missile flew 4,600 kilometers putting it within reach of the U.S. territory of Guam, where key military bases are located at an altitude of 1,000 km. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he is scheduled to hold phone talks with U.S. President Joe Biden later in the day over the missile launch.

White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement that according to a U.S. assessment, North Korea launched a "long-range" missile. Tokyo estimates it to be of intermediate-range or greater.

Hamada said the missile flew over Japan for around one minute and landed outside the country's exclusive economic zone some 3,200 km east of the nation in the Pacific Ocean, adding there were no reports of damage to aircraft or ships. The missile could have been a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile, which Pyongyang has fired four times in the past, Hamada said. It is the seventh time North Korea has launched a missile over Japan. The last occasion was in September 2017.

Germany’s foreign minister told her Polish counterpart Tuesday there will be no more World War II reparations because Berlin considers the matter is closed. Annalena Baerbock directly addressed Poland’s Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau at a news conference in Warsaw following their talks on subjects that included Poland's request for reparations. “The question of reparations is, as you know, concluded from the German government’s point of view," she said.

The jet engines are roaring again at Offutt Air Force Base. One by one, eight of the 55th Wing’s RC-135 reconnaissance variant jets touched down Friday afternoon on the newly rebuilt runway after a short hop from their temporary home in Lincoln. At the controls of one of the wing’s training jets, Col. Kristen Thompson, the 55th Wing commander, got the honor of making the first landing at 2:08 p.m. It was the first landing at Offutt in 18 months, since the beginning of a complete reconstruction of the base’s single 2-mile-long runway. “Ladies and gentlemen, we’re finally here!” Thompson told a crowd of about 600 55th Wing airmen, veterans and their families. She turned the event into a wing party. The Heartland of America band entertained. There was a military working dog demonstration, food trucks, and bounce houses for the kids.

Musk proposes going ahead with deal to buy Twitter: report

Trading in shares of Twitter was halted after the stock spiked on reports that Elon Musk would proceed with his US$44 billion deal to buy the company after months of legal battles.

For a second time, Musk offered to buy the San Francisco company at $54.20. Twitter's stock jumped nearly 13% to $47.93 before trading stopped on the New York Stock Exchange, which listed "news pending" as the reason for the halt. Trading halts are how stock exchanges give investors a forced timeout when trading for a stock gets too chaotic, or when a company is about to offer market-moving news.

Bloomberg News reported Tuesday that Musk made the proposal in a letter to Twitter, according to people familiar with the case who were not identified.

Musk has been trying to back out of the deal for several months after signing on to buy the social media platform in April. Shareholders have already approved the sale, and legal experts say Musk faced a huge challenge to defend against a Twitter lawsuit, which was filed in July.

Musk claimed that Twitter under-counted the number of fake accounts on its platform, and Twitter sued when Musk announced the deal was off.

Neither Twitter nor lawyers for Musk responded to messages seeking comment on Tuesday.

The trial seeking to compel Musk to buy Twitter is set to start in Delaware Chancery Court on Oct. 17.

Musk's argument for walking away from the deal has largely rested on the allegation that Twitter misrepresented how it measures the magnitude of "spam bot" accounts that are useless to advertisers. But most legal experts believe he faced an uphill battle in convincing Chancellor Kathaleen St. Jude McCormick, the court's head judge, that something changed since the April merger agreement that justifies terminating the deal....
