Huge Industrial Explosion In Iran Sparks Panic, Protest-Related Speculation

A large explosion initially under mysterious circumstances has rocked Iran. Regional media has identified the location of the blast, which released a small mushroom cloud high into the air, in Amol, northern Iran. The timing couldn't be worse, as it unleashed some degree of panic in the country when it happened Monday afternoon.

It reportedly occurred at Kalleh dairy factory, which is one of the largest dairy producers in Iran, with the mayor of Amol telling Mazandaran Broadcasting Agency that the fire and explosion was sparked by accident due to repairs and a welding fire.

The smoke in the blast aftermath could be seen from several miles away, and news of it spread fast both within Iran and around the world, resulting in rapid speculation that it may have been connected to the ongoing wave of protests.

Some pundits have denounced that the industrial blast is being directly related to anti-government, economically-driven protests. The timing seems unfortunate, but the natural questions arise concerning the possibility of sabotage.

Currently, all eyes are on the US and Israeli reaction to the ongoing protests - now just over a week in progress, after President Trump pledged that he would "rescue" Iranians and potentially "hit" Iran "very hard" if authorities begin shooting protesters.

As for these persistent protests, so far at least 12 people have died, including at least one member of the security forces.

Thousands of people have mobilized across the country with security forces responding forcefully in some places.

On Thursday, Iran’s semiofficial Fars news agency reported that three people had died in confrontations between security forces and protesters in Lordegan in southwestern Iran. A further three deaths were reported in Azna and another in Kouhdasht, both in central Iran.

“Some protesters began throwing stones at the city’s administrative buildings, including the provincial governor’s office, the mosque, the Martyrs Foundation, the town hall and banks,” Fars reported of protests in Lordegan, adding that police had responded with tear gas.

With things on edge, and as Tehran leaders remain under pressure from the West, even the instance of a simple industrial accident - if this narrative indeed proves accurate, comes at the worst of moments.

Jan 5 (Reuters) – About a dozen oil tankers loaded with Venezuelan crude and fuel have left the country’s waters since the start of the year in apparent defiance of the U.S. government’s blockade on exports, according to documents seen by Reuters and industry sources including monitoring service TankerTrackers.com.

U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a blockade of all sanctioned tankers bound for Venezuela in mid-December, before the dramatic capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by U.S. troops in the early hours of Saturday morning. Trump said on Saturday that an oil embargo remained in full force after Maduro’s extraction.

All the departed vessels identified are under sanctions and most are now sailing on the high seas without any known flag or current ship safety documentation in place, shipping data showed. Half of them are supertankers that typically carry Venezuelan crude to China, according to TankerTrackers.com and shipping documents from PDVSA.

It was not immediately clear whether the U.S. had approved or allowed the shipments. Trump also said on Saturday that Venezuela’s largest customers, including China, would keep receiving oil.

A U.S. official told Reuters on Monday the vessel “quarantine” was in effect focused on sanctioned tankers, but did not elaborate on the departed ships.

The White House, the U.S. State Department, state-run Venezuelan oil company PDVSA and Venezuela’s oil ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

The vessels are carrying an estimated volume of 12 million barrels of Venezuelan heavy crude and fuel oil, according to deals negotiated with PDVSA and satellite images analyzed by TankerTrackers.com.

It was unclear where the vessels were heading. When they loaded in December, they were mostly destined for Asia. The ships had been stuck in Venezuelan waters since due to the U.S. blockade.

A separate group of three smaller empty ships, also under sanctions, left the country after completing domestic trips or discharging imports, including of Russian naphtha.

At least four of the departed tankers left Venezuelan waters on Saturday through a route north of Margarita island after briefly stopping near the country’s maritime border, TankerTrackers.com said.

At least four supertankers had been cleared by Venezuelan authorities to leave in dark mode, three sources with knowledge of the departure paperwork told Reuters. That means the vessels sail without their satellite tracking devices switched on, a common ploy for tankers in the global fleet that carry sanctioned oil from Venezuela, Iran and Russia around the world.

“We managed to get some supplies out,” a PDVSA source said. “The shipments were authorized despite the risks, but we don’t think we can continue using that route.”

In a planned meeting with Venezuela’s interim president and oil minister Delcy Rodriguez later on Monday, PDVSA’s board of directors was expected to receive directions and make decisions related to exports, the person added.

CHEVRON RESUMES EXPORTS

Separately, U.S. oil major Chevron called employees back to Venezuela after the holidays and resumed exports of Venezuelan oil to the U.S. on Monday after a four-day pause, according to shipping data and a source.

Chevron is the only company authorized by Washington to export Venezuelan crude, exempted from both the embargo and sanctions. A tanker chartered by the company is now carrying some 300,000 barrels of Venezuelan heavy crude to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The fluidity of Chevron’s operations in Venezuela, which has in recent years emerged as PDVSA’s main joint-venture partner, amid the country’s deep political turmoil contrasts with the state-run company’s situation.

PDVSA’s exports had ground to a halt last week due to the blockade, forcing it to begin cutting output at the weekend. The firm had almost nowhere to store the oil after filling onshore storage and loading ships with crude.

There were more than 20 million barrels bound for export stuck in ships before these departures, according to TankerTrackers.com.

Oil exports are Venezuela’s main source of revenue. The government, now led by Oil Minister and Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, needs cash from exports to finance state spending and to stabilize the country.

Venezuela’s National Assembly on Monday re-appointed Jorge Rodriguez as its President and his sister Delcy was formally sworn in as interim president after Maduro’s detention.

Trump told reporters on Sunday that he could order another military strike on Venezuela if authorities do not cooperate with U.S. efforts to open up its oil industry and stop drug trafficking.

The Trump administration is deploying hundreds Department of Homeland Security personnel as part of an expanded immigration and fraud crackdown in Minneapolis..

Officials told CBS News the operation could ultimately involve close to 2,000 agents and officers drawn from Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division and Homeland Security Investigations, the agency responsible for probing transnational crime and large-scale fraud.

The initiative is expected to run for roughly 30 days and marks the first major urban focus of the administration’s widened immigration enforcement strategy this year.

HSI agents assigned to the surge are anticipated to examine suspected fraud cases, building on inspections conducted last month at dozens of sites across the Minneapolis area.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commander Gregory Bovino, who previously oversaw controversial immigration operations in Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, and New Orleans, is expected to arrive in Minnesota to help coordinate enforcement efforts.

The deployment, which began Sunday, represents one of the largest concentrations of DHS resources in a single American city in recent years.

According to officials, the surge includes several hundred HSI agents, hundreds of ICE deportation officers, specialized tactical units known as Special Response Teams, and an extensive command structure involving dozens of senior supervisors.

Officials cautioned the numbers could grow further, with up to 600 HSI agents and as many as 1,500 ICE officers rotating through the region over the course of the month. DHS has not yet publicly commented on the operation.

The surge follows Operation Metro Surge, an ICE campaign launched late last year that targeted individuals with existing deportation orders, including Somali nationals.

As of December 19, DHS reported nearly 700 arrests tied to that effort.

The federal response also coincides with the growing scanda in Minnesota following years of major fraud cases involving federally funded programs, primarily committed by the city’s outsized Somalian community.

Prosecutors have charged more than 90 individuals since 2021, securing over 60 convictions so far, with alleged losses across nutrition, housing, and child care programs estimated in the billions..

“I don’t want them in our country. I’ll be honest with you,” President Trump said of Somali immigrants.

“Their country’s no good for a reason. Their country stinks.”

A Minnesota hotel that wouldn't allow federal immigration agents to stay there this month is apologizing and saying the refusal violated its own policies. The Department of Homeland Security had accused the global Hilton hotel chain of a “coordinated” effort to refuse service to its employees.

Hilton and local operators of the Hampton Inn Lakeville property released statements within hours apologizing and said the messages refusing to serve agents who were focused on immigration enforcement didn't reflect their policies.

In a social media post, DHS posted screenshots of a message sent Friday from a Hilton email address saying that immigration agents would not be allowed to stay at the hotel about 20 miles south of Minneapolis, and that their reservation was canceled.

“When officers attempted to book rooms using official government emails and rates, Hilton Hotels maliciously CANCELLED their reservations,” DHS said in the post, accusing Hilton Hotels of deliberately undermining and impeding law enforcement from enforcing immigration laws.

Trump Flips, Has More Info: Ukraine Didn't Target Putin Residence With Drones

President Trump has now made clear that he has reversed his position on the alleged Ukrainian massive drone attack on Russian President Putin's residence last week.

Trump explained to reporters that he's now been given a chance to be presented with more information, based on intelligence briefings and other undisclosed data which has come to light. He says Ukraine was not responsible, after previously seeming to agree with Kremlin allegations, which Trump had earlier called "deeply concerning".

The US President explained American officials had determined that Ukraine did not do it. According to his newest remarks:

Trump said that "something happened nearby" Putin’s residence but that Americans officials didn't find the Russian president’s residence was targeted.

"I don’t believe that strike happened," Trump told reporters as he traveled back to Washington on Sunday after spending two weeks at his home in Florida. "We don’t believe that happened, now that we’ve been able to check."

On December 29 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Ukraine launched multiple drones toward Putin’s official residence in the northwestern Novgorod region, describing that the drone wave was in the dozens, but that Russian air defenses intercepted all them.

The timing was further interesting given that just the day prior Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Florida to meet Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate to take up the issue of the stalled 20-point peace plan.

As for this week, the whole world is talking about Trump's removal of Venezuelan President Maduro by military force, which likely also had elements of a coup from within, based on Venezuelan officials cooperating with the CIA and US military.

This Latin American intervention against a Putin ally is likely to further complicate talks to achieve Ukraine peace.

The Kremlin has already blasted the blatant 'double standard' - given Washington has spent years berating Moscow for the Ukraine 'special military operation - yet now effortlessly invades a country in its own backyard.

Now, after the US intervention against Venezuela, Putin will see less incentive in making any kind of peace deal which falls anything short of Russia's complete and maximalist demands.

China could also get more aggressive in its anti-Washington rhetoric, as its citizens have been loudly highlighting American hypocrisy on the Taiwan issue.

Israeli organizations operating in conflict zones across Africa, Asia and Ukraine report sharp drops in partnerships and donations since October 7, alongside rising political pressure and antisemitism forcing some to downplay their Israeli identity

Sixty percent of Israeli aid and development organizations operating internationally have seen their ability to raise funds harmed since the outbreak of the Swords of Iron war, according to a survey conducted by SID-Israel, the umbrella organization of the Israeli professional community in international development and humanitarian aid.

The organizations operate in developing countries and conflict zones across Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, and in Ukraine since the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The survey found that about 40% of the organizations reported a decline in international partnerships, while more than one-third encountered threats, and in some cases the actual termination of cooperative projects.

The survey, conducted among 20 organizations, companies and representatives of academic programs operating in Israel and abroad, paints a troubling picture of the impact of the war in Gaza on the sector. It points to significant damage to operational capacity, fundraising and long-term planning, alongside mounting political pressure, manifestations of antisemitism and a growing sense of isolation in the international arena.

About half of the organizations said the war has affected the nature and scope of their relationships with overseas partners. The most severe impact has been on resources and fundraising. Sixty percent reported harm to their ability to secure donations or investors, and about half cited an actual, sometimes sharp, decline in donations over the past year.

More than one-third said the renewal of multi-year grants has become less certain, significantly undermining their ability to plan long-term projects.

International criticism and concerns over hostile reactions have led to changes in operating practices. About 40% of the organizations said they were forced to alter how they present their work, either by emphasizing universal humanitarian values or by blurring their Israeli identity.

Others reported concealing partnerships, reducing public visibility and canceling joint initiatives, particularly with partners in countries where relations have deteriorated since the war began.

Nearly 60% of the organizations reported encountering anti-Israeli or antisemitic incidents, either personally or among colleagues. Staff members and volunteers described a decline in their sense of personal safety and fears of working in the field.

In some cases, organizations reported employee departures and layoffs. More than a quarter of respondents said they were questioned or required to address political positions regarding the war as part of their work.

In an effort to continue operating, organizations reported shifting resources to activity within Israel and increasing reliance on domestic donations.

“The war has created challenges for Israeli organizations and companies working in international development, but it has also revealed a committed, professional community with a high capacity for adaptation,” said SID Israel CEO Ayelet Levin Karp.

Republicans had pulled funding after years of criticism over left-wing bias.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has been officially dissolved by its board of directors after Republican cuts to funding for PBS and NPR.

The CPB provided funding for public news for 58 years but was plagued by criticism from the right that it supported left-wing policies and the agenda of the Democratic party.

'Americans will never again have to worry that a single cent will go towards CPB's radical programming.'

The organization released a statement Monday confirming the vote for dissolution.

"For more than half a century, CPB existed to ensure that all Americans — regardless of geography, income, or background — had access to trusted news, educational programming, and local storytelling," said CPB president and CEO Patricia Harrison.

She went on to call the vote the fulfillment of a "profound" responsibility.

"CPB's final act would be to protect the integrity of the public media system and the democratic values by dissolving, rather than allowing the organization to remain defunded and vulnerable to additional attacks," she added.

Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana welcomed the news and mocked the CPB.

"The Corporation for Public Broadcasting — which funneled your money to NPR and PBS to call birds, roads, and country music racist — is officially DISSOLVED," he wrote. "Good riddance."

Republicans had criticized public funding for NPR and PBS, while Democrats had criticized defunding efforts as deleterious for rural areas and other underserved communities.

The Swiss federal government announced on Monday that it has frozen “any assets held in Switzerland by Nicolás Maduro and other persons associated with him, with immediate effect.”

Maduro was taken into custody by the U.S. military on Saturday to face narco-terrorism and weapons charges.

The Federal Council, which is the seven-member cabinet that serves jointly as head of state for Switzerland, said it was acting quickly to “prevent an outflow of assets.”

“The asset freeze does not affect members of the current Venezuelan government,” the statement noted.

“Should future legal proceedings reveal that the funds were illicitly acquired, Switzerland will endeavor to ensure that they benefit the Venezuelan people,” the statement added. The asset freeze will remain in effect for four years, or “until further notice.”

The Federal Council noted that Monday’s asset freezes were in addition to those imposed in 2018 to bring Switzerland into alignment with the European Union’s position when Venezuela was sanctioned under the Embargo Act. The 2018 sanctions included a ban on the sale of arms, advanced electronics, and other “goods which can be used for internal repression” to the Maduro regime.

Monday’s statement from the Federal Council included a note of discomfort with the U.S. military operation that brought Maduro to justice, including a call for “de-escalation, restraint, and compliance with international law, including the prohibition of the use of force and the principle of respect for territorial integrity.”

“Switzerland has also repeatedly offered its good offices to all sides in order to find a peaceful solution to the situation,” the statement added.

The Swiss foreign ministry issued an identical call for de-escalation and “respect for territorial integrity” on Saturday. Bloomberg News reported on Monday that the foreign ministry has not specified “how many assets linked to Maduro are being held in Switzerland.”

A Chinese intelligence official owns twin golf courses flanking the U.S. Air Force headquarters that controls two legs of the U.S. nuclear triad, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation has discovered.

Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), which is responsible for all of America’s intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear bombers, is hosted by Barksdale Air Force Base near Shreveport, Louisiana. Approximately two miles to the north and south, the base is effectively bordered by The Golf Club At StoneBridge and its 27-hole, 340-acre sister, Olde Oaks Golf Club.

Since 2013, both courses have been owned by Eugene Ji, a Chinese-American businessman, who has held multiple Chinese government positions including serving as an official for an arm of a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence and intelligence agency called the United Front Work Department (UFWD), according to local news reports, Louisiana business records and DCNF translations of Chinese government and university announcements.

“The matters you’re asking about are unrelated to StoneBridge or Olde Oaks Golf Course and we are not able to provide any comment,” Ji’s daughter, who is the general manager of both golf clubs, told the DCNF. “Our focus here is solely on golf operations and serving our members.”

Ji purchased the golf courses to provide a “networking opportunity for Chinese and American business people,” and to create a “platform” for “people-to-people diplomacy” with U.S. lawmakers, according to Chinese state media reports and a DCNF translation of Ji’s 2014 autobiography “New Circle.”

“Politicians and dignitaries, business friends, university presidents — all come to play golf,” Ji wrote in his book, according to a DCNF translation. “When senators and congressmen campaign, when governors and mayors hold gatherings, they all come to my golf club.”

However, customer reviews and local news reports have criticized the golf clubs’ conditions in recent years. One Google review characterized StoneBridge as a “dump,” while others have claimed nine holes have been “abandoned” by Olde Oaks, which the American Golfer blog listed as among the “worst” Louisiana golf courses in December 2025.

Ji’s ownership of the golf clubs and business activities, which appear centered on the Bayou State, pose a serious national security threat, lawmakers and Chinese intelligence experts told the DCNF.

“We spend billions of dollars on our bomber fleet. Chinese agents spend pennies on the dollar to put them in the crosshairs,” Jacqueline Deal, an advisory board member at State Armor, a nonprofit focused on countering the CCP, told the DCNF. “For the price of two apparently poorly-maintained courses, the CCP and the People’s Liberation Army have likely secured an intelligence and sabotage bonanza.” There have been no reported espionage incidents involving either of the golf courses

Several heavy C-17A Globemaster III strategic airlifters and KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft have conducted transatlantic flights from the United States to various air bases across Europe.
