US Reissues Urgent 'Do Not Travel' Warning For Russia, As NYT Confirms CIA's Escalating Involvement

The US State Department has once once again re-issued an urgent advisory warning Americans not to travel to Russia. The renewed travel advisory also tells any American citizens currently in Russia to depart immediately. It cites the danger associated with the ongoing war with Ukraine, as well as the significant risk of wrongful detention by Russian officials, and the possibility of terrorism.

This is nothing new, given such warnings have been issued going all the way back to February 2022, but it suggests that the Trump administration's view is that things might continue to escalate as efforts toward a peace deal stall.

"Russian officials often question and threaten U.S. citizens without reason. Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on false charges. They have denied them fair treatment and convicted them without credible evidence. Russian authorities have opened questionable investigations against U.S. citizens for their religious activities," the advisory reads.

This joins no less than five fresh advisories reissued by the department since Dec. 18. They include Level 4: Do Not Travel warnings for Belarus and Yemen, as well a Level 2 warning for Jordan due to terrorism, and a Level 1 advisory for Portugal.

Currently the State Department also has active Do Not Travel warnings for Venezuela, Syria, Haiti, Ukraine, and several other countries.

One thing the official Russia travel warning leaves out is the fact that the CIA continues to assist Ukraine in actively targeting Russian territory, especially energy sites.

Even as the Pentagon has taken steps to draw down its support, the CIA has been ramping up its anti-Russia covert actions launched out of Ukraine, as The NY Times this week highlighted:

A new long-term plan reportedly envisions a “dramatic expansion” of all IDF military activity, including weapons in outer space

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been ordered to prepare for a possible simultaneous war against Iran, Lebanon, and the West Bank, according to Israeli Channel 12. One scenario reportedly includes an “explosive operation” against Tehran, which is currently facing widespread Israeli-backed cost-of-living protests.

The preparations are part of a four-year long-term plan led by IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, the broadcaster revealed on Wednesday. On top of war readiness, they also reportedly include plans to develop capabilities to attack both satellites and ground targets from space.

Officials in West Jerusalem expect Iran to attack Israel to “prevent the dissolution” of the Iranian government under the pressure of the protests, Channel 12 said.

Israel has held off on officially commenting on the mass unrest shaking Iran, concerned about a potential military response, Channel 12 claimed. However, Israel’s Mossad spy agency has openly backed the protests on social media, and claimed that it has agents embedded in the demonstrations.

The demonstrations began in late December, prompted by hyperinflation and an enduring economic crisis in the sanctioned Islamic Republic.

The unrest, the worst in recent years, rapidly spread to multiple cities and reportedly led to deadly clashes with the Iranian authorities, with some protesters demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy, ousted by the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to militarily intervene. “We are locked and loaded and ready to go” if Iran kills “peaceful protesters,” he said on Truth Social on Friday.

Just days before, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Florida, Trump threatened to back new airstrikes on Iran if it ramps up its ballistic missile program.

Against that backdrop, the Ukrainian president named military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov as his new top aide on January 2.

The Russian Army captured more than 5,600 square kilometers, a total equivalent to more than the previous two years combined.

The amount of territory is still far short of the more than 60,000 square kilometers Russia took in 2022 following its full-scale invasion.

IDF says it killed suspect; 2 Gazans burn to death in tent

Also Friday, the Israel Defense Forces said that troops from the 188th Armored Brigade killed a suspect who crossed the Gaza ceasefire line in southern Gaza.

The soldiers “identified a terrorist who crossed the Yellow Line” and posed an immediate threat to the troops, who “eliminated the terrorist to remove the threat,” according to the military. It did not say if the suspect was armed.

Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis said Friday afternoon that it had received the body of a young man killed by IDF gunfire in Bani Suheila, which lies near Khan Younis on the Israeli-controlled side of the Yellow Line.

The man was identified in Palestinian media as Firas Abu Shanat, reportedly in his 20s.

Such incidents have occurred regularly since the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal, with Hamas’s health ministry reporting at least 416 people killed by IDF gunfire since October 11.

The figure cannot be independently verified and does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Separately, Amal Abu Al-Khair and her 5-year-old grandson Saud burned to death Thursday night in their nylon tent in western Gaza City’s Yarmouk area, on the Hamas-controlled side of the Yellow Line.

The nylon tent caught fire from cooking, a neighbor said. As 2026 begins, thousands of Palestinians battle harrowing winter conditions in flimsy makeshift housing and the humanitarian crisis persists.

Over the past weeks, cold winter rains have repeatedly lashed the sprawling tent cities, causing flooding, turning Gaza’s dirt roads into mud and causing buildings damaged in Israeli bombardment to collapse.

UNICEF says at least six children have now died of weather-related causes, including a 4-year-old who died in a building collapse.

At least three children have died of hypothermia, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.

High temperatures in December were in the 60s Fahrenheit (15-20 Celsius), but dipped into the mid-40s F (6-8 C) on some nights.

Aid groups say not enough shelter materials are getting into Gaza during the truce.

There is also concern that Israel’s recent suspension of more than three dozen international aid groups from operating in Gaza will make it even harder to get supplies like tents in.

The Diaspora Affairs Ministry said the organizations did not comply with stringent new “security and transparency” requirements concerning their employees.

UN Chief Antonio Guterres on Friday called for the ban “to be reversed, stressing that international non-governmental organizations are indispensable to life-saving humanitarian work and that the suspension risks undermining the fragile progress made during the ceasefire,” his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

“This announcement comes on top of earlier restrictions that have already delayed critical food, medical, hygiene and shelter supplies from entering Gaza.

This recent action will further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians,” Dujarric added.

Palestinians have long called for mobile homes and caravans to be allowed in to protect them against living in impractical and worn-out tents. In Yarmouk, people live in nylon tents near a garbage dump.

COGAT, the Defense Ministry body that oversees aid to Gaza, says it has let in hundreds of thousands of tents and tarpaulins and is waiting for international organizations to let in close to 100,000 pallets of “water-related items.”

The City of Portland has officially rolled out a new taxpayer-funded benefit: paid “Immigration, Naturalization, and Citizenship Leave” Human Resources Administrative Rule (HRAR) 6.15.

City officials have now committed public funds to cover paid leave for immigration court proceedings—including deportation hearings while blocking basic oversight, all while the city is facing a $66 million shortfall.

As of January 1, 2026, city workers in Portland, Oregon, can now clock out for up to 40 hours a year — without losing pay or benefits — to deal with immigration-related legal matters for themselves or for family members.

Eligible employees may use this leave for activities such as:

Obtaining legal support or meeting with immigration or criminal defense attorneys

Attending interviews or tests related to naturalization or citizenship

Appearing at state or federal criminal court proceedings

Deportation hearings

Matters involving “unlawful detention” related to immigration status.

For the first 40 hours each year, this leave is paid and coded in the payroll system as IMLV, with the employee remaining on regular payroll the entire time.

The policy does not stop with the employee.

HRAR 6.15 explicitly allows this paid leave to be used to support:

A spouse

A child

A parent

A sibling

Or anyone with a “close association” equivalent to family.

Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the policy is its strict privacy mandate.

Under HRAR 6.15, supervisors and managers are prohibited from asking about or collecting information related to:

An employee’s immigration status

Citizenship status

Country of birth

Employees are also instructed not to provide such information to the city, except where strictly required by state or federal law

Requests are recorded in the payroll system, but the underlying details are intentionally shielded. Managers are even warned not to exchange specific request details via email.
