The top 6% of earners continued to have wages above the payroll tax cap. Yet their real earnings grew by an average of 62% from 1983 through 2000, exceeding expectations. Meanwhile, the remaining 94% of workers only saw a 17% increase in average real earnings.

The FICA payroll tax cap did not increase quickly enough to maintain the 90% tax coverage. As of 2000, it had dropped to about 82.5%, and mostly stabilized there, according to Nuñez — which meant less tax revenue for the program’s reserves. In 2023, 83% of total payroll was subject to Social Security taxes, a Bipartisan Policy Center analysis shows.

The unexpected economic shock of the Great Recession also hurt Social Security’s funding, as higher unemployment and slower earnings growth meant less payroll tax revenue coming into the program. Older workers may have opted for retirement, increasing the benefits the program paid out.

Congress will be ‘forced to deal with Social Security’

It is now up to lawmakers to decide how Social Security’s shortfalls will be addressed, whether through tax increases, benefit cuts or a combination of both.

“The longer we wait to do something, the higher the cost is going to be,” Nuñez said.

The soonest projected depletion date — 2032 — means the next presidential election “could very well determine the future of the program,” Nuñez said.

Senate lawmakers who are elected this year will also be in office at that time.

“Legislators are going to be forced to deal with Social Security, even though they have not wanted to,” Nuñez said.

Tax tip: 2025 'bonus' deduction

While today’s lawmakers have vowed to protect Social Security, their approach has largely meant doing nothing rather than tackling the tough reforms the program needs, Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, wrote in November.

That leaves it up to voters to press lawmakers to address the program, she said.

The changes they make will determine how much Americans pay into Social Security and the amount of benefits they receive.

“What’s going to matter the most is who’s at the table making those decisions when that time comes around,” Nuñez said.

A former Commissioner of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Sports, Parks, and Recreation (SP&R), Calvert White, was sentenced yesterday to five years in prison for soliciting and accepting a bribe from a government contractor in exchange for assistance in attempting to obtain a $1.43 million dollar government contract. His co-conspirator, Benjamin Hendricks, was also sentenced yesterday to 68 months in prison for his role in the same scheme.

“Calvert White rigged a public bid process in exchange for a bribe,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “He abused the trust of those who live in the community he was supposed to serve. The Criminal Division will continue to prosecute government corruption. Such conduct undermines the integrity of our institutions at every level of government.”

“The defendants’ convictions send a message: public corruption is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by our community,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Sleeper for the District of the Virgin Islands.

Public officials take an oath based on trust and assume a responsibility of service to the people,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Claudia Dubravetz of the FBI San Juan Field Office. “When that trust is violated through acts of corruption, it undermines confidence in government and harms the communities it is meant to serve. This is unacceptable, and the FBI will continue to work with our partners to identify, investigate, and hold accountable those who abuse their positions for personal gain.”

The Iranian authorities have sought to delegitimise the protests by claiming rioters infiltrated peaceful protests. “None of this would justify resorting to disproportionate use of force or coercing families,” Türk said.

Mai Sato, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, demanded to be able to visit Iran for a thorough investigation. “The Iranian people have shown enormous courage by talking truth to power,” she said, and urged the international community to reciprocate.

“Lethal force can only be used as a last resort to protect life and must be lawful, necessary and proportionate. I’ve received countless videos showing security forces using lethal force against unarmed protesters.”

The protest movement has largely petered out in the face of the crackdown, which was accompanied by an unprecedented internet blackout, though chants of “death to the dictator” are taking place at bitter and often well-attended funerals.

Videos are still trickling out from inside Iran showing how security forces were given licence to shoot to kill protesters, especially from 5-8 January.

One of the main reformist newspapers, Ham-Mihan, has been shut down for printing two stories: one on the pursuit of protesters in a hospital and the other detailing the severity and brutality of the suppression more widely.

Many leading reformists have not been able to express their views on the crackdown, and the few that have been allowed to address wider audiences seem to be blaming both sides for a collapse in social solidarity brought on by a crash in the exchange rate.

The extent to which these problems are caused by sanctions or internal inefficiency is debated.

In his longest reflection to date on the violence, the Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, a reformist elected 18 months ago, claimed “the civil and just protest of the people was turned into a bloody and violent battle due to a conspiracy by those who wish Iran ill will”.

Scott Bessent, the US treasury secretary, took credit while in Davos for the protests, saying US sanctions had led to the unrest and that maximum economic sanctions “worked because in December, their economy collapsed”.

He added: “We saw a major bank go under. The central bank has started to print money. There is a dollar shortage. They are not able to get imports, and this is why the people took to the streets.

This is economic statecraft, no shots fired, and things are moving in a very positive way here.”

Trump has repeatedly left open the option of new military action against Iran after Washington backed and joined Israel’s 12-day war in June aimed at degrading Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

But the prospect of immediate American action seemed to have receded in recent days, with both sides insisting on giving diplomacy a chance.

Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi, who heads Iran’s Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters, which coordinates the army and the Revolutionary Guards, warned the US on Thursday that any military strike on Iran would turn all US bases in the region into “legitimate targets”.

Sanctioned Russian Oil Tanker Goes ‘Not Under Command’ in Mediterranean Off Algeria

(Bloomberg) — An oil tanker that’s under sanction for its role in transporting Russian oil appears to have run into trouble off the coast of Algeria and is now drifting in the Mediterranean Sea, according to tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

The LR2-class vessel Progress was sailing east along the North African coast toward the Suez Canal, carrying a cargo of about 730,000 barrels of Russia’s flagship Urals crude. After passing Algiers on Wednesday afternoon, the vessel abruptly turned north and left the shipping lanes. In the early hours of Thursday, its navigation status changed to “Not under command,” and its speed fell to about one knot, the data show.

Western authorities are scrutinizing the tankers moving Russian oil closely with over 600 of the vessels blacklisted for their role in moving the barrels. Another tanker hauling Russian crude along a similar route was boarded by the French and allied navies on Thursday.

By Friday midday, the Progress was continuing to drift eastward at a speed of about 1 knot, the tracking data show.

The Equasis international shipping database lists the manager of the Progress as Legacy Marine LLC, based in St. Petersburg, Russia. Calls and an email to the company weren’t answered.

The move out of shipping lanes, subsequent change in navigation status and drop in speed point to some kind of mechanical issue.

‘Not under command’:

The Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972, defines “Not Under Command” as follows:

The term ‘vessel not under command’ means a vessel which through some exceptional circumstance is unable to manoeuvre as required by these Rules and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel.

Such circumstances generally include, but are not limited to:

Steering gear failure

Engine failure/propulsion loss

Loss of power

Unexpected damage

The Progress is under sanction by the European Union and the UK for its involvement in the Russian oil trade. The 19-year-old ship, whose name has been changed twice since it was blacklisted, recently switched its flag to Russia and was entered onto the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping in November.

FMC Commissioners Confirm Trump Administration Is Closing Longstanding Harbor Maintenance Tax Loophole

Two Federal Maritime Commission commissioners confirmed Thursday that the Trump administration has begun implementing enforcement measures to close a decades-old tax loophole that allowed cargo routed through Canadian and Mexican ports to avoid U.S. Harbor Maintenance Tax (HMT) fees.

In a joint statement, Commissioners Max Vekich and Laura DiBella said the effort marks a major shift in U.S. maritime trade enforcement, targeting what they described as a long-standing distortion of cargo flows and port competition.

“We commend the Administration for taking steps to close the land border loophole which poses a threat to the U.S. economy and maritime interests,” the commissioners said.

The move follows Section 6 of President Trump’s April 9, 2025 executive order, Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance, which directed the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to close a longstanding tax loophole by enforcing the collection of all applicable customs duties, taxes, and fees — including the Harbor Maintenance Tax — on foreign cargo entering the United States via land borders, along with a new 10 percent service fee to cover additional CBP processing costs.

The existing Harbor Maintenance Tax, set at 0.125% of a cargo’s commercial value, helps fund U.S. port and harbor maintenance. The policy aims to prevent shippers from bypassing U.S. port fees by routing cargo through Canadian or Mexican ports before trucking it into the United States.

For nearly two decades, that loophole has reshaped North American trade flows. According to the commissioners, Canadian ports — backed by heavy government investment — built far more capacity than required for domestic demand while aggressively targeting U.S.-bound cargo.

“Ports in Canada have been capturing market share at our nation’s expense for almost two decades,” they said.

A 2012 FMC study estimated that eliminating the tax disparity could shift as much as half of U.S.-bound container traffic from Canada’s West Coast ports back to American gateways. The same competitive dynamics have increasingly applied to Mexican ports as cross-border logistics networks expanded.

Vekich and DiBella warned that continued inaction risked accelerating the loss of U.S. port traffic, investment, and jobs — particularly as new terminal projects move forward north and south of the border.

“Implementation of Section 6 would eliminate the artificial cost advantage that is undermining our economy and helping to justify these projects,” they said, cautioning that further expansion in Canada and Mexico could ultimately lead to terminal closures at U.S. ports.

The commissioners said closing the loophole would directly benefit American workers and domestic port competitiveness.

“Doing so will staunch the bleeding of maritime jobs to Canada and Mexico and create new employment opportunities for U.S. longshore workers, truck drivers, and others, while providing the U.S. maritime industry a much-needed boost,” they said.

The White House has framed the policy as a fairness measure aimed at leveling the playing field for U.S. ports. A fact sheet said DHS is directed to “enforce collection of the Harbor Maintenance Fee on foreign cargo entering the United States to prevent circumvention via Canada or Mexico, putting an end to a longstanding unfair practice.”

The commissioners noted that their comments reflect their personal views and do not necessarily represent the official position of the Federal Maritime Commission.

Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., questioned former special counsel Jack Smith on Thursday in a hearing focused on Smith’s investigations into President Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified documents and role in the Jan. 6 attack.

The hearing is an opportunity for the career prosecutor to publicly offer his inside perspective on the investigations, which both led to unprecedented indictments. Both were scuttled once it was clear that Trump would return to the Oval Office; Department of Justice policy prevents prosecution of a sitting president.

Republicans and the president have accused Smith of pursuing a politically motivated case against the president. Trump has denied wrongdoing while attacking Smith, calling him a "criminal" who ought to be investigated and "put in prison."

Smith defended his investigations in an hourslong closed-door meeting with lawmakers in December, saying he said he had "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" of what his investigations laid out. He’s denied accusations of bias.

Always scheming, organizing and planning in the background of Washington DC, Mary McCord was conducting surveillance of an Oathkeeper chat room and sending information to the FBI following the November 2020 election, and in the runup to the January 6, 2021, protest.

This is interesting on a variety of levels, because we have documented Mary McCord working on the Trump-Russia fabrication [FISA warrant], the CIA [Ukraine] impeachment fabrication [as key staff], the January 6th Committee fabrication [again staff], and the Jack Smith fabrication. Now we see Mary McCord actively setting up the “insurrection narrative” ahead of the J6 protests.

It appears Mrs. McCord then forwarded the email to someone [REDACTED], likely within the J6 Committee or Jack Smith investigation on Sept 24, 2021.

There’s a reason why the J6 Committee deleted the records of their activity, an angle missed by most. When you understand what they hid, and why they did it, you then understand why current Speaker of The House Mike Johnson will not go near the subject.

The J6 targets were identified through a collaboration between the legislative research group and the FBI. [That’s unlawful by the way – but that’s another matter]. The FBI contracted Palantir to identify the targets using facial recognition software and private sector databases.

Once identified, the targets were then searched in the NSA database for a fulsome context of identity. All subsequent electronic metadata of the targets was retrieved and utilized in prosecution; however, no one ever discovered this was the collaborative method. That has not come out yet.

That’s why the Steele Dossier ultimately became important. It was the Steele Dossier that provided the push, the legal cover needed for the DOJ-NSD to submit the application for a Title-1 surveillance warrant against the campaign of Donald J. Trump.

When the application was finally assembled for submission to the FISA court, the head of the DOJ-NSD was John Carlin. Carlin quit working for the DOJ-NSD in late September 2016, just before the final application was submitted (October 21,2016). John Carlin was replaced by Deputy Asst. Attorney General, Mary McCord.

♦ When the FISA application was finally submitted (approved by Sally Yates and James Comey), it was Mary McCord who did the actual process of filing the application and gaining the Title-1 surveillance warrant.

A few months later, February 2017, with Donald Trump now in office as President, it was Mary McCord who went with Deputy AG Sally Yates to the White House to confront White House legal counsel Don McGahn over the Michael Flynn interview with FBI agents. The surveillance of Flynn’s calls was presumably done under the auspices and legal authority of the FISA application Mary McCord previously was in charge of submitting.

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)— Florida workers are heading out of state to help with the upcoming Winter Storm.

Duke Energy is deploying 500 workers to the Carolinas ahead of the winter storm.

“Current forecasts show Winter Storm Fern has the potential to bring snow, sleet or freezing rain to the Carolinas as soon as Saturday, so Duke Energy Florida is preparing to deploy 500 crew members and contractors to offer support and help restore power as safely and quickly as possible,” Duke Energy said.

Tampa Electric is sending nearly 200 people to help restore power in Georgia and other southern states.

“As a powerful winter storm barrels across the country, Tampa Electric is sending nearly 200 people to help restore power in Georgia and other southern states expected to be hit hard by ice, freezing rain and snowfall,” TECO said.

Around 60 TECO line workers and support personnel are expected to leave today and head to Macon, Ga.

TECO workers are expected to stay up to two weeks in the area.

According to TECO, 130 tree trimming and power line contractors are traveling to help Duke Energy Carolinas and Alabama Power.

General Motors to move Buick Envision SUV production from China to U.S.

General Motors said Thursday that it plans to shift production of a Buick SUV from China to Kansas for vehicles sold in the U.S.

The move comes as automakers face stiff tariffs on vehicle imports and as President Trump presses companies to invest in domestic manufacturing.

GM said it will move production of the successor to its Buick Envision compact SUV to the Detroit automaker's Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City beginning in 2028. Vehicles produced for sale outside the U.S. could continue to be produced in China. The company has not yet announced the new vehicle's name.

GM added that the production shift reflects the company's commitment to American manufacturing.

"This decision further strengthens GM's domestic manufacturing footprint and supports U.S. jobs, building on $5.5 billion in new investments announced across our U.S. manufacturing sites in the last year," the company said in a statement to CBS News.

In 2025, the U.S. imposed baseline tariffs of 25% on most foreign-made cars and auto parts. GM has paid a 25% tariff on imports of the Envision since 2018, according to Reuters.

In 2024, GM said it will start manufacturing its Chevrolet Equinox vehicles at the Kansas City plant, which just launched Chevrolet's all-electric Bolt vehicle, starting in 2027. In June, the carmaker also announced that it would expand production of its Chevrolet Blazer, which is also produced in Mexico, to a GM plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

Japanese automaker Toyota has also pledged to invest more in its U.S. manufacturing capabilities, committing to investing up to $10 billion in U.S. operations over the next five years.

Greenland and its population are not up for grabs, a pro-independence lawmaker from the island, has told RT, in response to Washington’s push for control over the Arctic territory.

Kuno Fencker, a member of parliament for the Naleraq party, stressed that the “people and country are not for sale.”

“We are open for business and we will never per principle accept a rhetoric that is going towards buying people or buying countries. That is absolutely unacceptable and unprecedented in 2026,” he said in an exclusive interview with RT on Friday. Fencker emphasized that Greenland’s red line is maintaining its sovereignty, vowing, “We will not bow under a new annexator or colonizer again ever.”

Fencker’s comments come in response to US President Donald Trump’s continued push to acquire Greenland – an autonomous Danish territory – at one point suggesting it could be taken “the easy way or the hard way.”

This week, Trump announced that a “framework” for a Greenland deal, negotiated with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, is now on the table and would provide the US with “all the military access we want.” The deal would reportedly grant the US “sovereign base areas” on the island and fast-track rights to mine rare-earth minerals.

The Ukrainian leader has sparked a wave of international backlash and accusations of being unfair and ungrateful to Kiev’s Western backers

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is facing severe backlash from key international partners after a combative speech at Davos,where he went on a tirade accusing Europe of “indecisiveness” toward Russia and insufficient support for his country.

The backlashcomes as Zelensky’s popularity in the West is already on a downward spiral over his constant criticism of Kiev’s European backers while demanding billions in support– while Ukraine continues to struggle with high-level corruption scandals and a dire military situation.

The reactions to his speech at the World Economic Forum from European capitals were swift. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called it “unfair to Europe,” telling Corriere della Sera that the continent has “guaranteed Ukraine’s independence” through immense political, financial, and military support.

Zelensky ‘crossed the line’

Former French MEP Florian Philippot condemned Zelensky’s speech, describing it as a “moment of madness” that managed to “insult everyone,” including “the European people who have been giving him weapons and billions for years!” The leader of the Patriots party said: “not a single euro, not a single weapon, and obviously not a single French soldier for Ukraine!”

Another harsh response camefrom Iran. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi labeled Zelensky a “clown” after he criticized Tehran’s crackdown on protests. Araghchi accused the Ukrainian leader of “fleecing American and European taxpayers to line the pockets of his corrupt generals” while hypocritically calling for US aggression against Iran. “The world is tired of these bewildered clowns, Mr. Zelensky,” he said.

Assault on Europe ‘deeply ungrateful’

The criticism was just as scathing in the media, with Wall Street Journalcorrespondent Bojan Pancevski saying Zelensky is “losing the plot,” callinghis assault on Europe “factually wrong” and “deeply ungrateful,” at a time when “the Ukrainian state literally runs on European money.” He also pointed to rampant corruption probes reaching Zelensky’s inner circle in recent months.

Hungarian analyst Zoltan Koskovicz suggested thatZelensky’s threat against Orban, which comes ahead of an upcoming parliamentary vote in Hungary, is a “highly unethical interference in the Hungarian elections.” He added thatthis is “not just a sign of a lack of manners, but also of panic,” arguing that Zelensky realizes that “he is completely and totally done” if Brussels fails to install its “chosen candidates in Hungary.” Budapest has consistently opposed EU aid for Ukraine.

Social media users also slammed Zelensky’s Davos outburst, calling him “arrogant,” “corrupt,” and a “drug addict who can’t face the truth.”

Russia-US-Ukraine talks begin in Abu Dhabi – UAE foreign minister

The closed-door negotiations are aimed at resolving territorial disputes between Moscow and Kiev

Russian, American, and Ukrainian officials have sat down to the first round of trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed. After a week of public diplomacy in Davos, the talks are taking place behind closed doors.

In a statement on Friday, Emirati Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed the start of negotiations, saying that “sustainable solutions to conflicts can only be achieved through dialogue and de-escalation.”

The meeting is being held at an undisclosed location, and “the press is not expected,” TASS reported.

The trilateral meeting was announced by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky on Thursday, and confirmed shortly afterwards by Washington and Moscow. It follows multiple rounds of diplomacy by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who have met separately with Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin on multiple occasions over the last year, most recently on Thursday night at the Kremlin.

The Russian delegation is headed by GRU military intelligence chief Admiral Igor Kostyukov, senior Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told reporters on Thursday night. The rest of the delegation will be made up of military personnel, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

Ukraine is represented by national security chief Rustem Umerov, general staff chief Andrey Gnatov, negotiator David Arakhamia, deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Kislitsa, and Kirill Budanov, the former military intelligence chief who now heads Zelensky’s office, Zelensky said on Friday.

Washington is represented by Witkoff and Kushner. Witkoff is expected to meet Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev separately to discuss economic issues, Peskov said.

All three parties have said that the issue of territory – or how much of the Donbass Zelensky is willing to abandon his claim to – remains the biggest obstacle to a deal. The Donbass regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, along with Kherson and Zaporozhye, voted to join the Russian Federation in 2022, eight years after Crimea rejoined Russia by popular vote.

“It's all about the land. This is the issue which is not solved yet,” Zelensky told reporters in Davos, before declaring that “the Russians have to be ready for compromises, not only Ukraine.”

“Without resolving the territorial issue according to the formula agreed upon in Anchorage, there is no hope of achieving a long-term settlement,” Ushakov said, referring to US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last year.

“We remain interested in resolving the Ukrainian crisis by political and diplomatic means.However, if it does not happen, Russia will continue accomplishing its goals on the battlefield where Russian troops have the initiative,” he added.

Trump met with Zelensky in Davos on Thursday, and described the conversation as “good.”Zelensky, however, walked away without securing an agreement on post-conflict security guarantees from the US.(he is an idiot, Trump can speak with people he throughly dislikes)

Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) Director Dr. Mehmet Oz and Deputy Director for Health and Human Services, Jim O’Neill, just released a stunning video from Minnesota. They discuss a former linen factory that was transformed into 400 Medicaid businesses that generated almost $380 million in billing to CMS.

It doesn’t make sense. One industrial building housing almost 400 individual Medicaid businesses that cost taxpayers $380 million in payments for services that are now under investigation. It is almost guaranteed these complex houses fraudulent fake businesses. Director Oz dropped the video on his X account.

“Why did no one in the state figure out this was a concern? Perplexingly to me, in a place of this nature, an industrial complex that people would not come to for child care or autism care or transportation support, how is it possible this could come up like an abscess in the heart of Minneapolis and nobody was watching?!”

“They generated about $380 million of billing that you, the taxpayer, were putting up. That means roughly each business had a million dollars of billing.” … “It’s an industrial area. There’s no reason that you have a mother bring her child.”

Convicted Minnesota fraudster alleges Walz, Ellison were aware of widespread fraud

A Minnesota woman convicted in one of the state’s largest fraud schemes alleged in a jailhouse interview that Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison were aware of widespread fraud well before federal prosecutors stepped in.

Aimee Bock, the former head of the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, spoke to Fox News from Sherburne County Jail in Minnesota, claiming state officials continued approving and paying claims even after concerns were raised about potential fraud.

Bock alleged the state approved program sponsors and was responsible for monitoring claims, but officials repeatedly failed to investigate or stop suspicious companies after she flagged them.

"I honestly believe Keith Ellison and Gov. Walz need to be held accountable. There needs to be an investigation done. If they weren't aware, that's concerning," she told Fox News.

"I have to believe that the governor's office and Keith Ellison's office were aware of this. They've said they were involved in helping the FBI. They've said they were made aware, but apparently I'm scary, so they couldn't do anything," Bock added.

Federal prosecutors have said the scheme involved more than $250 million in stolen taxpayer funds intended to feed children during the COVID-19 pandemic, with sham restaurants set up to falsely claim reimbursements.

Walz’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

The House Oversight Committee said on Jan. 7 that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged 98 defendants in Minnesota fraud-related cases, 85 of whom are of Somali descent.

Sixty-four defendants have already been convicted. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., said the DOJ has issued more than 1,750 subpoenas, executed over 130 search warrants, and conducted more than 1,000 witness interviews in what officials describe as a sweeping federal probe.

Comer said federal prosecutors estimate at least $9 billion has been stolen across multiple fraud schemes in Minnesota.
