Ukrainian drone strike sets Russian oil depot ablaze for second day — fire crews battle blaze and bitter cold

A fire at a major oil depot in the Russian city of Penza continued to burn for a second straight day following a Ukrainian drone strike, Russian officials said.
The Russian Telegram channel Astra reported the incident on Jan. 24, citing local authorities who said 150 emergency personnel and more than 40 firefighting vehicles had been deployed to the scene.
Penza Oblast Governor Oleh Melnichenko said such fires are difficult to extinguish because petroleum products must burn off completely. “We’re fighting not just the fire, but the cold as well,” he said.
The blaze erupted overnight on Jan. 23 after drones struck the PenzaNefteProdukt facility. Russian officials claimed air defenses intercepted four unmanned aerial vehicles.
Ukraine’s General Staff later confirmed its forces had hit the oil depot, sparking a fire. Satellite imagery showed that at least two fuel storage tanks were damaged or destroyed.
According to official Russian data, PenzaNefteProdukt is one of the largest fuel businesses in Penza Oblast and the Republic of Mordovia. The company sells various types of fuel through its proprietary gas station network and owns three large oil depots.

IDF says strike targeted 2 Gazans who crossed Yellow Line, planted bombs near troops

The Israeli Air Force struck and killed several Palestinian terror operatives who crossed the ceasefire line and planted explosives near troops in the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday, the military said.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the operatives were identified crossing the Yellow Line, planting a bomb in the ground, and approaching troops of the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade “in a way that posed an immediate threat.”
The IAF then struck and “eliminated the terrorists to remove the threat,” the military said.
Palestinian media reported that two boys were killed in a drone strike in the Strip’s north around noon Saturday. They were identified as Mohammad and Suleiman al-Zawar’a, ages 15 and 14, respectively.
According to the reports, they were killed while collecting firewood near the now-defunct Kamal Adwan Hospital, which is situated on the Hamas-controlled side of the Gaza ceasefire line.
Since October 10, a fragile US-sponsored truce in Gaza has largely halted the fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas, but both sides have alleged frequent ceasefire violations.
Meanwhile, Gaza hospitals have received twelve people wounded and four people killed by the IDF over the past 48 hours, the Strip’s Hamas-run health ministry said Saturday.
It did not identify the dead, say where the people were killed, wounded, or specify the severity of the wounds.
Mohaed Abu Selmiya, director of Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital, was cited by The Associated Press on Thursday, saying the hospital received the bodies of four Palestinians killed by IDF tank shelling in eastern Gaza City.
The IDF has not commented, but attributes such strikes to ceasefire violations by Hamas.
According to Palestinian media, the four people were killed on the Hamas-controlled side of the Gaza ceasefire line. They were not identified in the reports.
The Hamas-run ministry also said in its daily report Saturday that a three-month-old baby boy died of cold exposure in Gaza. He was identified as Ali Abu Zur.
The ministry said he died at the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital in Deir al-Balah, in the Strip’s center. Palestinian media reported he died on Thursday.
Israeli forces have killed over 400 Palestinians in Gaza since the ceasefire-hostage agreement took effect in October, according to the Gaza health ministry, over two years after Hamas invaded southern Israel, sparking the war in Gaza.
The Hamas-controlled ministry’s toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and gunmen.
The United Nations children’s agency said earlier in January that over 100 of the Gazans killed during the ceasefire were children.

Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar appeared before a federal judge Thursday for allegedly using public funds to run a fraudulent for-profit disinfecting business during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has pleaded not guilty and was released on bond.
The South Texas sheriff was indicted alongside his assistant chief in November. The charges, unsealed Thursday, accuse them of opening a private business, Disinfect Pro Master, in April 2020 and entering into agreements with local businesses and restaurants "despite having no employees or supplies of their own."
The company secured a $500,000 contract to clean schools in Laredo, which they fulfilled using department staff and resources, U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei of the Southern District of Texas said in a statement.
"For more than two years, the business allegedly operated almost entirely with county employees and supplies, incurring minimal overhead," Ganjei said, alleging that Cuellar and two deputies split the profits three ways, each coming away with about $175,000.
Cuellar's former deputy, Rick Rodriguez, previously pleaded guilty to his role in the scheme. On Thursday, Cuellar's lawyer unequivocally denied his client's role in any misconduct.
"The government is going to have to prove their case that whatever misconduct happened by another person was intended by the sheriff and known by him," said Eric Reed of the Reed Law Firm in Houston. "And they'll never be able to make that case because he did not know and was not involved."
Cuellar could face up to 10 years in federal prison for charges related to conspiracy and theft of federal funds, and an additional 10 years for money laundering charges related to spending the alleged income to buy property in Laredo.
Cuellar is the brother of U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, who was recently pardoned on federal corruption charges by President Donald Trump. Rep. Cuellar was indicted in May 2024 on a dozen counts of bribery, money laundering and conspiracy related to his relationship with an Azerbaijan-run oil-and-gas company and a Mexican bank.
Martin Cuellar, a Democrat, was reelected in 2024 to a fifth four-year term as Webb County's top law enforcement officer, a position he has held since 2009. Henry Cuellar is currently running for his 12th two-year term representing his South Texas district. On social media, Trump criticized the congressman's "lack of loyalty" in deciding to run again as a Democrat on the heels of receiving the presidential pardon.
Reed said he hoped politics did not influence the government's decision to pursue this case that "should have died a natural death" a year ago.
"I'm concerned that the government is proceeding in the face of explicit explicatory evidence exonerating the sheriff," he said.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The commander of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, which was key in putting down recent nationwide protests in a crackdown that left thousands dead, warned that his force is “more ready than ever, finger on the trigger,” as U.S. warships headed toward the Middle East.
Nournews, a news outlet close to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, reported on its Telegram channel that the commander, Gen. Mohammad Pakpour, warned the United States and Israel “to avoid any miscalculation.”
“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard and dear Iran stand more ready than ever, finger on the trigger, to execute the orders and directives of the Commander-in-Chief,” Nournews quoted Pakpour as saying.
Tension remains high between Iran and the U.S. in the wake of a bloody crackdown on protests that began on Dec. 28, triggered by the collapse of Iran’s currency, the rial, and swept the country for about two weeks.
Meanwhile, the number of people reported by activists as having been arrested jumped to more than 40,000, as fears grow some could face the death penalty.
Trump’s warnings
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned Tehran, setting two red lines for the use of military force: the killing of peaceful demonstrators and the mass execution of people arrested in the protests.
Trump has repeatedly said Iran halted the execution of 800 people detained in the protests. He has not elaborated on the source of the claim, which Iran’s top prosecutor, Mohammad Movahedi, strongly denied Friday in comments carried by the judiciary’s Mizan news agency.
On Thursday, Trump said aboard Air Force One that the U.S. was moving warships toward Iran “just in case” he wants to take action.
“We have a massive fleet heading in that direction and maybe we won’t have to use it,” Trump said.
A U.S. Navy official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military movements, said Thursday that the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and other warships traveling with it were in the Indian Ocean.
Trump also mentioned the multiple rounds of talks American officials had with Iran over its nuclear program before Israel launched a 12-day war against the Islamic Republic in June, which also saw U.S. warplanes bomb Iranian nuclear sites.
He threatened Iran with military action that would make earlier U.S. strikes against Iranian uranium enrichment sites “look like peanuts.”

Airline jitters
The tension has led at least two European airlines to suspend some flights to the wider region.
Air France canceled two return flights from Paris to Dubai over the weekend.
The airline said it was “closely following developments in the Middle East in real time and continuously monitors the geopolitical situation in the territories served and overflown by its aircraft in order to ensure the highest level of flight safety and security.”
It said it would resume its service to Dubai later Saturday.

Rising death toll and arrests
Although there have been no further demonstrations in Iran for days, the death toll reported by activists has continued to rise as information trickles out despite the most comprehensive internet blackout in Iran’s history, which has now lasted more than two weeks.
The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency on Saturday put the death toll at 5,200, with the number expected to increase. The group’s figures have been accurate in previous unrest and rely on a network of activists in Iran to verify deaths.
That death toll exceeds that of any other round of protest or unrest there in decades, and recalls the chaos surrounding Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Iran’s government offered its first death toll on Wednesday, saying 3,117 people were killed. It said 2,427 were civilians and security forces, and labeled the rest as “terrorists.”
In the past, Iran’s theocracy has undercounted or not reported fatalities from unrest.
The activist agency on Saturday also increased the total number of people arrested to 40,879 — a significant jump from the more than 27,700 people in its previous update.
There have been fears Iran could apply the death penalty to arrested protesters, as it has done in the past.
Iranian judiciary officials have called some of those being held “mohareb” — or “enemies of God” — a charge that carries the death penalty. It had been used along with other charges to carry out mass executions in 1988 that reportedly killed at least 5,000 people.
At a U.N. Human Rights Council special session on Iran held in Geneva Friday, Volker Türk, the U.N.’s high commissioner for human rights, expressed concern over “contradictory statements from the Iranian authorities about whether those detained in connection with the protests may be executed.”
He said Iran “remains among the top executioner states in the world,” with at least 1,500 people reportedly executed last year — a 50% increase over 2024.

Three civilians killed in drone strike apparently targeting voter registration workers in Launglon, Myanmar
January 23, 2026
The attack occurred on January 20 as a group of voter registration workers, guarded by junta troops, were entering a house in the village, according to locals.
The explosion hit the house, killing three adult women and injuring two others, including a child, a human rights activist from Launglon Township said.
“The attack seems to have been aimed at the group that was going from house to house collecting voter registrations. But it struck a residential area instead.
Three civilian women were killed, and a man and a child were injured. It appears the strike was carried out by a resistance group targeting the registration team, but something went wrong,” he said.
The junta has announced that the final round of voting in the election will be held on January 25, with Launglon, Thayetchaung, and Palaw townships in Tanintharyi Region included in this round.
However, local sources said that in Launglon Township, where resistance forces are active in many areas, the junta will only be able to open polling stations in some downtown wards of Launglon and in a few settlements in the Sakhangyi and Kamyawkin village tracts.
No group has claimed responsibility for the drone strike.
“We don’t know which group carried it out. We only learned about the incident through the news,” said an officer from the Launglon People’s Defence Force (PDF).
Many resistance groups based in Tanintharyi Region, along with the Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade 4, have already announced that they strongly oppose and categorically reject the junta’s election.
Furthermore, the Brigade-4 Coordination Team (BCT-4), a joint body made up of PDF units under the National Unity Government (NUG) and KNU Brigade 4 forces, issued a statement on December 23 last year warning that it would not tolerate any actions that facilitate the holding of the election.

Two civilians were killed Saturday in a drone strike carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Dilling, a city in Sudan’s South Kordofan region, the Sudan Doctors Network said.
In a statement, the network said the drone was operated by the RSF and its ally, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N), and struck the Fath al-Rahman neighborhood.
The attack killed a woman and a man and wounded several other civilians, the network said, without providing an exact number of injured.
Describing the strike as a clear violation of international calls to protect civilians, the group condemned what it called the “deliberate targeting of noncombatants” and held both the RSF and SPLM-N responsible for the incident.
The network urged the international community, the US and human rights organizations to pressure the two groups to lift the siege on Dilling, halt attacks on civilians, allow unhindered humanitarian access and ensure accountability for violations.
Neither the RSF nor the SPLM-N had commented on the report at the time of publication. Sudanese authorities, along with local and regional organizations, have previously accused both groups of abuses against civilians.
Dilling has remained under siege by the RSF and SPLM-N since the early months of the conflict that erupted more than two years ago and has been repeatedly hit by artillery shelling and drone attacks.
Fighting has intensified in recent weeks across the three Kordofan states, where clashes between the army and the RSF have forced tens of thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five states in the western Darfur region, except for parts of North Darfur that remain under army control.
The army holds most areas of the remaining 13 states across the south, north, east and center of the country, including the capital, Khartoum.

Drone forces delay of LifeFlight transport from Primary Children's Hospital

LEHI, Utah (KUTV) — A drone spotted above a LifeFlight helicopter delayed the transport of a child in critical care from the Primary Children's Hospital in Utah County.
A drone was caught on camera flying directly above a helicopter landing at the hospital on Thursday afternoon, according to officials with the Lehi City Police Department.
The video was filmed by officials with the South Jordan Fire Department and shared with Lehi police.
Police said when drones are spotted in an area, all air operations cease until it's determined that there is no further danger to aircraft.
In this case, the helicopter was at the hospital to pick up a child in critical care needing to move to a different medical facility. The transportation was delayed after the drone was spotted.
"This means an unnecessary and COMPLETELY preventable delay to that critical care transport," police wrote in a social media post.
In addition to interrupting critical missions, police said flying drones near aircraft poses a significant safety risk to people in the air and on the ground.
"Flying drones near helicopters is extremely dangerous, illegal, and can cause catastrophic collisions, forcing emergency aircraft to ground during critical missions," police said.
They continued to note that flying drones within three-fourths of a mile of a helipad could result in fines and jail time.
"Should those who decide to stupidly and selfishly fly a drone near a helicopter be identified they will be prosecuted," officials said.
This comes several months after Provo firefighters called on drone operators to stop flying near a wildfire in Buckley Draw Canyon.
One fire official said it was the highest number of drone incursions she had seen in her entire career.
The drones caused aircraft to ground, delaying fire suppression efforts.

Shockwaves In Beijing: Xi Targets His Own Top General, Longtime Confidant, In Elite Purge
Another significant military purge appears underway in China, as Saturday morning the West woke up to news that China's most senior military officer, who is second only to Xi Jinping, has been put under investigation over alleged "grave violations of discipline and the law."
Gen. Zhang Youxia is a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, the Communist Party body that controls China's armed forces, and this comes as somewhat of a major shock given he is widely regarded as President Xi's closest ally within the military - or at least prior to this.
Another member of the commission, Gen. Liu Zhenli, has also been placed under investigation, according to the Defense Ministry on the same day. He's in charge of the PLA military's Joint Staff Department.
No further details have been given regarding the accusations against General Zhang Youxia, but such language is often presented in such crackdowns as a euphemism for corruption.
Xi has described corruption as "the biggest threat" to the Communist Party, having previously several times warned that the struggle against it "remains grave and complex." But critics as well as Western observers say this has served as a convenient and public PR mechanism for sidelining political rivals, and strengthening Xi's power and hold on the levers of power.
The Wall Street Journal's Jonathan Cheng says that General Zhang's downfall is surprising as not only has he known Xi for decades, but is the "most senior member of military hierarchy to face dismissal since fallout of 1989 Tiananmen protests."
And a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst who follows Chinese elite politics, Christopher K. Johnson, tells the NY Times on Saturday, "This move is unprecedented in the history of the Chinese military and represents the total annihilation of the high command."

U.S. President Donald Trump says Canadian goods exported to the United States would be hit with 100 percent tariffs if Canada makes a deal with China.
“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on the morning of Jan. 24.

The U.S. president wrote the remarks while posting a Jan. 23 article by Just the News titled, “Deal with the Devil: How Canada’s New Partnership With China Could Backfire.”
Trump’s reference to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as “Governor” marks a return to the relations the U.S. president had with Carney’s predecessor, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, using the title to reflect his view that Canada should be part of the United States. Trump had not previously used the title for Carney, saying on several occasions that he likes him, but relations soured after Carney delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, last week in which he levied heavy criticism at the United States.

Three medical personnel were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on an ambulance in Russia’s Kherson Region, Governor Vladimir Saldo has reported.
In a post on his Telegram channel on Saturday, the official wrote that the vehicle was struck as it approached the city of Golaya Pristan. “The crew of three was trying to reach a seriously ill person in a zone where enemy drones are hunting for any vehicles around the clock,” the governor of Kherson Region stated.
While the paramedics’ fate remained unknown for some time, Saldo said in another Telegram post later in the day that all three had perished in the attack. He described the drone strike as “yet another war crime by the Kiev regime’s militants and a crime against humanity.”
“You can’t call this anything other than the murder of civilians who were saving lives and caring for the sick in the most dangerous area,” the governor added.
A massive Ukrainian drone attack on a New Year’s Eve party in Russia’s Kherson Region late on December 31, 2025, claimed the lives of 29 people; dozens more were injured. According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, the café and hotel in the Black Sea village of Khorly, where about 100 revelers had gathered, were targeted by multiple kamikaze UAVs, including at least one with incendiary charges. The venue was quickly engulfed by the flames, trapping the victims inside.
The Russian authorities condemned the strike as a “terrorist act” and launched an investigation.
In Zaporozhye Region, which, along with Kherson Region as well as the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, joined Russia following referendums in 2022, a hospital sustained a drone attack, Governor Evgeny Balitsky said on Friday. The building suffered minor damage with no casualties reported, according to the official.

Syria Urges EU to Take Its Citizens Back as ISIS Prison Breaks Threaten Chaos
A senior official at the al-Aqtan prison in Raqqa, Syria, on Thursday pleaded with European and American officials to take control of the facility, before clashes between Syrian government troops and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) create more opportunities for Islamic State terrorists to escape.
Syrian officials are also suggesting Western powers take custody of the foreign-born ISIS fighters they have allowed to languish in Syrian prisons for years.
Al-Aqtan head of security Chiya Kobane posted a video message on Thursday in which he said the SDF can no longer manage the facility, so the world needed to step in and secure its ISIS prisoners.
“We have protected al-Aqtan prison until now, but it has reached its limit. Water and electricity are cut off, fuel is gone, and food supplies are running low,” said the security chief.
Kobane pleaded for an “international party” to “take over the prison so that we can reach our safe zones under international guarantees.” He said the SDF held out as long as it could, because it recognized its “humanitarian duty” to secure the prison.
The Kurdish-led SDF has been fighting with the Syrian army since December, as the central government of interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa seeks to bring the autonomous Kurdish region fully under his control. Each side consistently accuses the other of provoking conflicts and violating cease-fire agreements.
The SDF, a vital U.S. and European ally against the Islamic State, has long maintained prison camps where ISIS terrorists and their family members are held. Many of these prisoners are foreign fighters who traveled from other countries to join ISIS in Syria during its heydey. Their home governments have been reluctant to take them back, in part because they believe returning ISIS recruits, their wives, and their children could become security risks.
The SDF began falling back from the prison camps this week, under intense assault from Syrian government forces. A prison break involving hundreds of ISIS jihadis occurred at the al-Shaddadi prison camp on Monday.
Damascus has accused the SDF of releasing some of its prisoners to create a security crisis to put pressure on the government, while the SDF has accused jihadi fighters working for the Syrian army of releasing ISIS prisoners on purpose.

Here Are The Eight Democrats Who Voted To Allow The Clintons To Evade Justice
The House Oversight Committee voted on Monday to hold former President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with subpoenas — and eight Democrats voted against the measure.
The eight Democrats who voted against — meaning they voted to allow the Clintons to ignore the subpoenas without penalty — were Reps. Wesley Bell (D-MO), Shontel Brown (D-OH), Robert Garcia (D-CA), Ro Khanna (D-CA), Kweisi Mfume (D-MD), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA), and James Walkinshaw (D-VA).
George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley laid out his thoughts on the situation, naming the Democrats who voted against efforts to hold the Clintons to account.
As some noted, Rep. Ro Khanna has been particularly insistent on getting to the bottom of everything and getting a full release of the Epstein documents — a fact that caused several eyebrows to raise when he was also among the Democrats suggesting it was fine for the Clintons to disregard congressional subpoenas on the matter.
The Clintons responded to the subpoenas with a lengthy letter explaining why they should not have to comply with requests to submit to the legal process.
The Clintons said in the letter that they believed the subpoenas to be “invalid” and had already given Congress all the information they had.
“There is no plausible explanation for what you are doing other than partisan politics,” the letter said.
Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) made it clear that he was not impressed, saying, “They have had five months to comply with this … We expect to hear from Bill Clinton, he is not above the law.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Friday he would be ready to join US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative for the sake of Gaza, but could not accept the plan in its current form.
“In the form in which the peace board is currently set up, we cannot accept its governance structures in Germany for constitutional reasons,” Merz said in a joint news conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome.
“However, we are of course prepared to explore other forms — new forms — of cooperation with the United States of America if the aim is to find new formats that bring us closer to peace in different regions of the world.”
Merz said these formats would not need to be limited only to Gaza and the Middle East but could also apply, for example, to Ukraine.

Congress Wants Answers on RECENT Nuclear Site UFO Sightings

UFOs are watching our nuclear sites. According to Pentagon data released in late 2024, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) documented 18 separate instances of unidentified objects flying over U.S. nuclear weapons infrastructure. Hundreds of cases remain unexplained.
The pattern extends beyond military sites. Documents obtained by The Black Vault through a Freedom of Information Act request reveal the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission recorded a surge of drone incursions over sensitive nuclear installations from 2022 through 2024.
In December 2024 alone, sightings nearly doubled within a single week at facilities including Oyster Creek, Salem, and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations in New Jersey.
The trend continued into 2025. According to CBS Minnesota, on January 8, 2025, staff at Prairie Island Nuclear Plant reported four to five drones flying around the facility.
Officers confirmed seeing two drones but were unable to identify the operators. The incident is not under active investigation.
In Wyoming, officials with the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office have recorded drone-like objects circling the Jim Bridger Power Plant for over 13 months, according to AOL News.
Sheriff John Grossnickle enlisted help from U.S. Representative Harriet Hageman, who reportedly witnessed the formations herself. “We’ve done everything we can to figure out what they are, and nobody wants to give us any answers,” spokesperson Jason Mower stated.
This is not limited to the United States. According to Newsweek, Russian authorities sounded an alert at the Leningrad nuclear power plant in April 2023 after detecting an unidentified object moving at 124 miles per hour.
Officials suggested it might be a weather balloon but never confirmed an explanation.
A peer-reviewed study published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, and mentioned on Fox News in October 2025 adds historical context.
Researchers at Palomar Observatory found that mysterious transient objects were 45 percent more likely to appear within 24 hours of nuclear weapons tests conducted between 1949 and 1957 — before any satellites existed. Lead researcher Dr. Beatriz Villarroel stated she could find “no other consistent explanation than that we are looking at something artificial.”

Egypt And Saudi Arabia Wants Libya’s Haftar To Abandon UAE
Egypt and Saudi Arabia have stepped up pressure on Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the commander-in-chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), over facilitating Emirati military support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, the Middle East Eye reported on January 22.
The RSF, which is backed by the United Arab Emirates, has been engaged in a power struggle with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), allied to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey and others, for close to three years now.
The news outlet said that the pressure is a part of a broader Egyptian-Saudi effort to block flows of arms, fuel and fighters to the RSF, curb the UAE influence across the Middle East, especially in the border triangle between Egypt, Sudan and Libya.
Earlier this month, specifically on January 9, Egypt struck an arms shipment that was heading from an area held by the LNA in southeast Libya to the RSF in the border triangle between the three countries. The attack reportedly caused significant losses.
Two days after the attack, Saddam Haftar, Khalifa’s son and deputy commander-in-chief of the LAN, visited Cairo and met Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Meguid Saker and other senior military and security officials.
Egyptian and Libyan media portrayed the meeting as focused on military cooperation, but MME said that the main topic discussed was the RSF.
“Saddam Haftar was literally summoned to Egypt, not invited for a courtesy visit, after confirmation that the UAE had supplied the RSF with weapons, military equipment, portable air defence systems and drones with the help of the LNA,” a senior Egyptian military source told the outlet.
“Egyptian intelligence and military officials delivered a strongly worded warning to Khalifa Haftar through his son, presenting evidence of fuel deliveries to RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo from Libya’s Sarir refinery, alongside weapons shipments from the UAE,” he added.
According to the source, Egypt has aerial imagery showing weapons shipments moving from Abu Dhabi to Haftar, and from there to the RSF, as well as Libyan fuel tankers transporting fuel to the RSF in Darfur.
“Egyptian security bodies have also monitored, through audio and visual surveillance, the arrival of mercenaries from Colombia and Venezuela into Libya, from where they are transferred to Sudan to join the RSF,” the source said.
“Without such support, the RSF would not have achieved its recent advances,” he continued.
“The message was clear: continued support for the RSF would force Egypt to reconsider its entire relationship with eastern Libya,” he added.
The UAE is a main backer of the LNA. According to MME, Egypt and Saudi Arabia offered Saddam Haftar cooperation and alternative backing.
