Iran protest crackdown killed more than 36,500, classified documents show

More than 36,500 Iranians were killed by security forces during a nationwide crackdown on protests on January 8 and 9, according to classified government documents and other evidence reviewed by Iran International’s Editorial Board.

The figure, if confirmed, would make the crackdown the deadliest two-day massacre of protesters on record.

Iran International reviewed newly obtained classified reports from Iran’s security agencies, along with field reports and accounts from medical staff, witnesses and families of victims. In a previous statement on January 13, the outlet had reported at least 12,000 deaths.

According to the documents, security forces confronted demonstrators in more than 400 cities and towns, with over 4,000 sites of clashes reported nationwide.

Iran International also reported evidence suggesting that some detainees and wounded protesters were killed without trial.

Images from morgues and hospitals reviewed by the outlet show bodies with gunshot wounds to the head bearing signs of hospitalization, including attached medical tubes and monitoring equipment.

Doctors and nurses who spoke on condition of anonymity said some wounded patients were shot while under medical care.

Interior Ministry documents seen by Iran International showed the death toll rising from at least 27,500 in reports to parliament on January 21 to more than 36,500 in subsequent intelligence reports to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Independent verification remains impossible due to security restrictions and communication limits.

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks reported on Sunday that Iran’s nationwide internet shutdown has continued for about 400 hours, leaving connectivity stuck near 1 percent of normal levels.

NetBlocks’ data showed access plunged around Jan. 9 and has stayed largely cut off since, indicating a sustained and deliberate restriction on online communications.

Left-Wing Activists Run Shadow Police Force On Signal To Target ICE In Minneapolis

Last week, federal prosecutors issued six grand jury subpoenas to Minnesota officials, including Gov. Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and others, as part of an investigation into whether they obstructed or impeded federal deportation operations.

While the subpoenas appeared focused on whether public statements by state and local officials interfered with federal immigration enforcement, late Saturday night, new reports from citizen journalists suggest the alleged obstruction may have extended well beyond just rhetoric at press conferences and on social media.

Let's begin with citizen journalist Cam Higby's bombshell reporting, who says he "infiltrated organizational signal groups all around Minneapolis with the sole intention of tracking down federal agents and impeding/assaulting/and obstructing them."

When a vehicle is flagged, its details are shared with designated "plate checkers," who cross-reference the information against a database of known federal assets and update the records if a match is confirmed.

"Dispatch runs a maxed-out call all day, telling protesters where ICE has been spotted and how they can best be impeded," he said.

One in Three California Community College Applicants Is Fake

California’s community college system has a responsibility to educate students, safeguard taxpayer funds, and provide affordable pathways to upward mobility.

Instead, it has become a case study in how public institutions collapse when verification is optional, enforcement is politicized, and fraud is treated as collateral damage.

Roughly one in three applicants to California’s community colleges—about 1.2 million individuals—is believed to be fraudulent.

These are fake students, many operating overseas, enrolling in online classes, submitting AI-generated assignments, occupying limited course seats, and collecting state and federal financial aid intended for real students.

California operates the largest public higher-education system in the nation, spanning 116 community colleges and serving more than two million legitimate students. The system was built to expand access and workforce training.

Instead, it became a low-friction entry point for scammers precisely because identity verification was optional for most applicants.

The scale of the problem forced action only after national scrutiny. Following a CalMatters investigation, nine members of Congress contacted the U.S. Department of Education and the Justice Department requesting a federal investigation into California’s community college financial aid process.

Only then did the system’s governing board vote to require student identity verification—a basic safeguard that should never have been discretionary.

Even that reform met resistance. The board debated charging a nominal application fee, reportedly no more than $10, before rejecting the proposal and instead directing staff to “explore” alternatives.

During public comment, students described competing with bots for required courses and losing seats needed to graduate or transfer. One student testified that a fake enrollee took her place in a class essential to her academic timeline.

That testimony underscores the real cost of fraud. Every fake applicant displaces a real student. Every fraudulent enrollment delays graduation, increases costs, and undermines the promise of affordable higher education.

This breakdown is not unique to community colleges. It reflects a broader pattern across California’s public-benefits systems, where eligibility checks were relaxed and oversight treated as a moral failing rather than a governing necessity.

California lost $32.6 billion to unemployment fraud during the pandemic. Prison inmates collected more than $1 billion in fraudulent claims, including payments sent to death-row inmates.

In disability insurance audits, state officials flagged 345,000 claims and found that 98% of the listed medical providers were fake.

‘Starmer Is a Traitor!’ Thousands Protest Planned Migrant Camp in Small English Town

Thousands of English locals turned out onto the streets in East Sussex on Sunday to protest against plans to house hundreds of alleged asylum seekers at a former military training camp in Crowborough.

This week, the Home Office, the government department tasked with controlling Britain’s borders and immigration system, began transferring migrants to the East Sussex camp, with 27 alleged asylum seekers being brought to the camp on Thursday, the local Argus newspaper reported .

The site, which is earmarked to hold up to 500 migrants at any one time, was commandeered by the government as it seeks to lessen its dependency on UK hotels to house migrants while their asylum claims are processed. According to the government, the migrants will only be stationed at the camp for three months at most.

However, the move has nonetheless sparked local concern in Crowborough, with opponents pointing to previous examples of crimes committed by the hands of hotel migrants, including the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl by an Ethiopian hotel migrant just days after breaking into the country illegally via the English Channel from France.

Thousands were seen waving the British Union Jack and the English flag of St George as they marched through Crowborough to demonstrate against the migrant camp.

Sarah White, of the Pink Ladies anti-mass migration campaign group, said : “Crowborough says no. The community of Crowborough just like all of the communities across the country don’t want undocumented men in their communities.”

Daily Mail , protesters were heard chanting “Keir Starmer, traitor” and seen carrying signs reading, “Crowborough says no!” and “Protect Britain from Tyranny, Listen to the People.”

Earlier this week, the Home Office confirmed that 27 asylum seekers have moved into the East Sussex camp. Three people were arrested, apparently amid opposing the move, including a 36-year-old man, a 62-year-old woman, and a 54-year-old man from Newhaven.

As of September, the government was housing around 36,273 supposed asylum seekers in hotels. This figure is likely to continue to rise, given the more than 41,000 illegal migrants who reached British shores last year. The government has vowed to shut down the migrant hotel scheme by 2029.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has said that while she understands there is a “strength of feeling” in opposition to the Crowborough camp, she said that it is “crucial” to the transition away from migrant hotels and therefore vowed to “vigorously” defend the project against any legal challenges from locals.

Macron Calls for Fast-Track Social Media Ban for Children Under 15

French President Emmanuel Macron says he wants his government to fast-track the legal process to ensure that a ban on social media for children under the age of 15 can enter into force in September at the start of the next school year.

Government moves to circumvent advice of AG, whose office warns of ‘abuse of power’

Cabinet resolution would remove requirement for AG to approve cabinet resolutions, government legislation; opposition says motion aimed at helping coalition stay in power

The government is planning to approve a cabinet resolution that would allow it to carry out executive actions and advance legislation without the approval of the Attorney General’s Office.

The move would upend a decades-long practice by which the attorney general reviews and approves key government policies and legislation to ensure they comply with the law, before they are advanced.

The Attorney General’s Office said the resolution would enable the government to act unlawfully by avoiding all legal advice, and pave the way for the abuse of governmental power. It said the resolution itself was therefore unlawful and should not be approved.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin, who initiated the resolution, originally sought to bring it to a vote in Sunday’s cabinet meeting, but his office later said it would be brought to a vote next week.

Opposition leaders denounced the proposal, with Democrats party head Yair Golan describing the resolution as an attempt by the government “to dismantle the gatekeepers [of the rule of law] in order to stay in power.”

At the same time, the government, on Levin’s initiative, is advancing legislation in the Knesset that would strip the attorney general role of most of its powers, and make the appointment entirely political, with the government having total control over the appointment and dismissal process.

Levin’s office did not publish the text of his proposed resolution, and his office refused to release it when asked by The Times of Israel. But a legal brief by the Attorney General’s Office on the resolution laid out the key changes the motion would create.

The resolution would enact changes to the Government’s Rules of Procedure document, governing the way the government works, allowing it to bypass the requirement to get legal approval for cabinet resolutions, a form of executive action, and formal government legislation.

In a letter sent by Deputy Attorney General Gil Limon to Levin on Sunday, Limon asserted that the resolution would essentially mean the government would no longer need to act in accordance with the law, and represented a “foundational change” to ensuring the proper running of government and the rule of law.

“This would do severe harm to the public and create a wide opening for illegal action by the government, for abusing governmental power, and [for] the unlawful use of government budgets,” warned Limon.
