Public services in Brazil face a “very real threat of collapse” as a result of the mismanagement by the outgoing far-right government, and the incoming administration will have a “herculean task” in rebuilding damaged institutions, particularly in the fields of health, education and the environment, the country’s president-elect has said.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva beat the far-right incumbent, Jair Bolsonaro, in a tightly fought election in October and is due to take power on 1 January.

In the weeks since Lula’s victory, his transition team have been evaluating the task ahead, and the leftist leader, who called Bolsonaro’s term “a tempest of fascism”, said they were shocked by what they have found.

“I don’t intend on making a big scandal about this; I just want Brazilian people to know the task that we are facing,” Lula said on Thursday. “After a four-year mandate, we find the government in penury, with the simplest things not being done … because the president preferred to tell lies to his bubble rather than govern this country.”

The transition report said: “The dismantling of the state and the disorganisation of public policies are deep and widespread, and have consequences in essential areas both in terms of people’s lives and the direction this country is going in. This has brought serious consequences for health, education, environmental preservation, job and income generation, and the fight against poverty and hunger, among other things.”

Lula’s vice-president and transition chief, Geraldo Alckmin, said education was particularly badly hit, with text books to be used next year still needing to be edited, the number of children in school down on previous years, and resources for essential services such as school dinners not sufficient to meet demand. University education was “almost in a state of collapse”, he added.

Health is another disaster area, particularly as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has killed almost 700,000 Brazilians.

Bolsonaro’s anti-vax stance did not resonate widely in Brazil, which has a record of widespread vaccinations, but budget cuts mean 50% of all children have not received their final polio booster.

About 95% of federal highways have no company maintaining them; almost no new houses are being built for the poorest sector of society, and bodies that oversee search and rescue after natural disasters have been starved of funds, he added.

In an attempt to balance out the grim assessment, Lula followed the announcement with a diverse list of new ministers, including Anielle Franco, the sister of Marielle Franco, the Socialism and Liberty party city councillor who was murdered in Rio de Janeiro.

Franco and her driver were ambushed and gunned down as they drove through the city centre in March 2018.

Two former police officers were arrested but have denied any involvement in her killing. Mafias made up of serving and former law enforcement officers are widely believed to have played a part.…

Brazilian archbishop is threatened for defending Indigenous peoples — even during Mass

Dom Roque Paloschi, president of the Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI) and archbishop of Porto Velho in the state of Roraima, Brazil, has been under attack because he denounced Indigenous people’s rights violations.

It has always been risky to live in Amazonia and defend social-environmental issues, but Paloschi says the situation has worsened greatly in the last four years — the period that coincides with Jair Bolsonaro’s administration.

In 2021, 355 attacks against Indigenous people were reported in Brazil — the most since 2013, according to a CIMI report.

Targeted by threats and intimidation even while celebrating Mass, Dom Roque Paloschi faces the double challenge of being a religious leader and defender of Indigenous rights in a world where environmental degradation and violence against traditional communities are increasing.

Aside from being president of the Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI), a part of the Catholic Church connected to the National Brazilian Bishops’ Conference (CNBB), since 2015 he has also been archbishop of Porto Velho, state capital of Rondônia, which is one of the most deforested states in Amazonia and which is undergoing intense pressure. Paloschi is also secretary of the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM-Brasil).

The challenges Paloschi has experienced for some time were illustrated in a recent episode of intimidation involving the archbishop of Aparecida (in the state of São Paulo), Dom Orlando Brandes, on Oct. 12th. Brandes was celebrating a Mass in honor of the patron saint of Brazil, Nossa Senhora Aparecida, and, as is customary on this date of national religious importance, he reflected on the challenges impacting the nation’s most vulnerable populations. He also drew the attention of his followers to the increasing levels of violence in the country.

But this year’s celebrations were attended by President Jair Bolsonaro, joined by members of his administration and many of his followers, who demonstrated acts of religious disrespect and aggression toward journalists. They did not like the criticisms they heard during the archbishop’s sermon, including that “a beloved homeland is not an armed homeland,” a reference to the government’s slogan promoting arming of the general population, which has grown in popularity under the current federal administration. The archbishop of Aparecida also defended the rights of Black and Indigenous populations and spoke out against hate campaigns and disinformation. Since then, reports of attacks suffered by various religious leaders in the country have increased.

Paloschi’s interview with Mongabay was held before Oct. 12, but many details about the daily pressures he faces, such as attempts to curtail his speech during Mass and attacks he has suffered on social networks for his critical beliefs, are similar to the problems that other Brazilian religious leaders are facing in the current scenario of political instability and polarization.

The risks involved in defending Amazonia

The CIMI president tells of innumerous instances of intimidation in the state of Rondônia involving attitudes and claims that make it clear they are coming from individuals intending to impose emotional and psychological pressure. Every Mass celebrated as well as other religious responsibilities have been difficult for this southern religious leader who holds a degree in philosophy from Pelotas Catholic University and another in theology from Rio Grande do Sul Catholic University.

The current situation is no different from the dilemmas he faced as acting bishop in Boa Vista, Roraima, from 2005-15, except that he says he feels the recent repercussions have become more worrisome.

“We live in this region that is typified by attitudes opposing not only the issue of Indigenous people but also of poor people’s rights. Our lives are shaped by this economy of destruction. And the traditional communities here are no longer seen as individuals but simply as obstacles to so-called development,” states Paloschi.

The daily pressures the archbishop is experiencing are the result of his critical stance. He headed denouncements of rights violations against Indigenous peoples and their territories during the CNBB assemblies in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He has also been outspoken at other national and international forums, including at the Vatican, where he has spoken about the problem with Pope Francis in the presence of other acting bishops in Amazonia….

However, their goal was not pure research, but something grander, it seems – Trimble describes the proposed activity as an “industrial version of the Institute for Advanced Study”.8 The letter goes on:

One chapter, titled “Electrostatic Effects,” describes the use of electric generators to charge giant metallic spheres buried in the ground six miles apart in symmetrical arrangements. The present study aimed to characterize the properties of a laser-generated seismic source for laboratory-scale geophysical experiments. This consisted of generating seismic waves in aluminum blocks and a carbonate core via pulsed-laser impacts and measuring the wave-field displacement via laser vibrometry. The experimental data were quantitatively compared to both theoretical predictions and 2D/3D numerical simulations using a finite element method. Two well-known and distinct physical mechanisms of seismic wave generation via pulsed-laser were identified and characterized accordingly: a thermoelastic regime for which the incident laser power was relatively weak, and an ablation regime at higher incident powers. The radiation patterns of the pulsed-laser seismic source in both regimes were experimentally measured and compared with that of a typical ultrasonic transducer. This study showed that this point-like, contact-free, reproducible, simple-to-use laser-generated seismic source was an attractive alternative to piezoelectric sources for laboratory seismic experiments, especially those concerning small scale, sub-meter measurements.

Introduction

Reproduction of seismic wave propagation at the laboratory scale (De Cacqueray et al. 2011; Barriere et al. 2012; Bordes et al. 2015; Valensi et al. 2015; Holzhauer et al. 2017; Pageot et al. 2017; Devi et al. 2018) is a promising approach that could lead to significant progress in imaging complex media and monitoring at the near-surface and crustal scales. The results obtained at the laboratory scale may be applied at the field scale using upscaling methods (Backus 1962; Capdeville et al. 2010; Dvorkin and Wollner 2017). In the present study, we investigated the applicability of a pulsed-laser seismic source (Martin et al. 1994; Rasolofosaon et al. 1994; Lebedev et al. 2011; Mikesell et al. 2012) in experiments as an alternative to the mechanical or piezoelectric sources frequently used at the laboratory scale.

A pulsed laser, or ablation laser, has been considered an interesting ultrasonic wave generator since the 1960s. The physical mechanisms involved in elastic wave generation via a pulsed-laser impact of high incident power density (Pd) were first described by White (1963). An initial thermoelastic regime exists at low Pd, followed by an ablation plasma regime when Pd increases; however, in most cases, the two wave-generation regimes coexist when waves are created by a pulsed-laser impact (Hutchins et al. 1981; Dewhurst et al. 1982; Aussel et al. 1988).

Ella Irwin, the Head of Trust and Safety at Twitter, has said the amnesty review of banned accounts is set to be completed within 30 days.

At the end of November, after restoring a number of prominent conservative accounts, new Twitter owner Elon Musk polled his audience to see if there was appetite for a “general amnesty” for banned accounts. A majority voted in favour of such a move, with only accounts that had not “broken the law or engaged in egregious spam” not being restored to Twitter.

Irwin, who took over the Trust and Safety role from radical leftist Yoel Roth, confirmed late on Tuesday night that the Twitter team had been “carefully reviewing thousands of suspended accounts for the past month,” and that users who “did not engage in threats of harm/violence, fraud or other illegal activity are being reinstated.”

The Trust and Safety Head noted that it would take around 30 days to finish the entire review. It remains unclear if this means that any account that was banned under the previous regime, that remains unbanned following the completion of the review, will have a chance to return to Twitter or not.

According to a previous comment from Twitter Safety on December 17, the new team under Musk said that the restoration of banned accounts for whom “permanent suspension was a disproportionate action for breaking Twitter rules,” would take 30 days.

Irwin did not acknowledge the previously declared timeframe in her tweet on Tuesday.

Irwin had replied to a thread noting that notable users were still getting locked out of or suspended from Twitter after Elon’s takeover, despite not having violated any rules, but for posting comments that would go against leftist narratives. At the time of writing, many of the accounts had been restored.

As Valiant News reported, a similar pattern occurred with conservative accounts who were locked out for mocking Ukrainian President Zelensky, and his appearance in front of Congress. Some hypothesised that the lock-outs were instituted after “mass-reporting” by “trolls or state actors,” or a rogue Twitter employee.

The exorbitant cost of attending college sets students up for failure — and higher education is often a “scam” and unnecessary in some fields, a writer and researcher on market influences and monopolies said.

“I think that the financial aspects of college or higher education have overwhelmed the ability to create a citizenry on a very basic level,” Matt Stoller, a research director at the American Economic Liberties Project, told Fox News. “This is kind of like a slow-burning crisis that we have to look into.”

The average cost of going to a private college — including tuition, fees, books and room and board — went from $2,930 per year in 1971 to $51,690 in 2021, according to data from the nonprofit group College Board. Nearly a third of parents and students believe that college is overpriced, according to a recent Sallie Mae and Ipsos

Stoller also sees elite institutions’ high prices as a moneymaking scheme

Columbia University’s prestigious School of Journalism costs $120,000 for the nine-month course.

“There is a scam there,” he told Fox News. “I haven’t been able to figure out what that scam is.”

“That’s what’s causing this problem,” he added.

Undergraduate enrollment declined by over 650,000 students — more than 4% — from the spring of 2021 to 2022, according to a report by the National Student Clearinghouse.

“I think that schooling exists to make citizens and to build a moral, self-governing society. Also, it’s there to let you get a job and build a life,” Stoller said. “I think that we’re falling down on all counts of that, and we have to look at why that is.”

Colleges are “such a mess in terms of administrative bloat” and are “saddling people with a lot of debt,” he added. “You can’t come out of a school with lots of debt and be a good citizen — you are now a dependent of someone else.”

Stoller also questioned the necessity of some degrees, like journalism. The high cost associated with journalism school, he said, “shows that it’s just a credentialing mechanism for a social class more than it is like a practical way to think about free expression in a democracy.”

In August, Politico Magazine published a profile on Columbia Journalism School Dean Jelani Cobb. In the piece, “’Are We the Problem?’ The New Dean of Columbia J-School Wrestles With Its Place in the Industry,” Cobb discusses questions over the necessity of journalism school and the state of the industry itself.

The dean who hopes Columbia will “be a pipeline that helps make the [journalism] field more democratic,” himself didn’t attend Columbia’s program.

“Journalism used to be a working-class profession. There’s no rocket science behind writing a news article,” Stoller, who writes weekly newsletters for his own Substack account, told Fox News. “You just figure out what’s going on and you write it down.”

“You need a high school degree for that — that’s it,” he said.

Prior to its upcoming conference in Davos next month, the World Economic Forum (WEF) appears to have joined the cancel campaign against Twitter, taking to recommending Chinese state-controlled social media apps to “follow along” with Davos Man into the future.

Twitter is noticeably absent from the entities listed on the organization’s “How to follow Davos 2023” social media pamphlet, and that appears to be no accident.

To stay up to speed with all that is happening within the invite-only doors of the ruling class confab, the WEF recommends following along through a handful of social media sites. In 2018, the CCP awarded Klaus Schwab with its China Reform Friendship Medal, a medal for non-Chinese people who do the CCP’s bidding overseas.

A startup says it’s begun releasing particles into the atmosphere, in an effort to tweak the climate

A startup claims it has launched weather balloons that may have released reflective sulfur particles in the stratosphere, potentially crossing a controversial barrier in the field of solar geoengineering.

Geoengineering refers to deliberate efforts to manipulate the climate by reflecting more sunlight back into space, mimicking a natural process that occurs in the aftermath of large volcanic eruptions. In theory, spraying sulfur and similar particles in sufficient quantities could potentially ease global warming.

It’s not technically difficult to release such compounds into the stratosphere. But scientists have mostly (though not entirely) refrained from carrying out even small-scale outdoor experiments. And it’s not clear that any have yet injected materials into that specific layer of the atmosphere in the context of geoengineering-related research.

That’s in part because it’s highly controversial. Little is known about the real-world effect of such deliberate interventions at large scales, but they could have dangerous side effects. The impacts could also be worse in some regions than others, which could provoke geopolitical conflicts.

A new peer-reviewed study is raising concerns that a third dose of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines may actually worsen immune response against COVID-19, creating waves in both mainstream and heterodox COVID circles.

Published in Science Immunology last week, the study by German researchers found that mRNA boosting induced a high level of so-called IgG4 antibodies, a subclass known for prompting a mild immune response, in two cohorts of several dozen healthcare workers.

The "shift" to this IgG subclass was "not seen with adenovirus vector vaccines" in the study, Scripps Research Translational Institute Director Eric Topol, who was not involved in the research, tweeted while cautioning that "clinical significance is not known."

The research is just the latest to prompt scrutiny of federal vaccine recommendations and ongoing professional and educational mandates, particularly for college students, a demographic with low COVID risks but elevated risks of post-jab heart inflammation.

The CDC still recommends everyone 6 months and older receive a full series and booster of the original Wuhan strain vaccine, topped off with the new bivalent Wuhan-Omicron booster, regardless of COVID risk level or likelihood of adverse reactions.

The agency's own research has found superior protection against reinfection from natural immunity when compared to mRNA vaccines as well as low bivalent effectiveness against symptomatic infection, to the point where two doses protect better than three.

A Chinese military plane came within 20 feet (6 metres) of the nose of a US air force aircraft in the contested South China Sea last week and forced it to take evasive manoeuvres to avoid a collision in international airspace, the US military said on Thursday.

The close encounter followed what the United States has called a recent trend of increasingly dangerous behaviour by Chinese military aircraft.

The incident, which involved a Chinese Navy J-11 fighter jet and a US air force RC-135 aircraft, took place on Dec. 21, the US military said in a statement.

"We expect all countries in the Indo-Pacific region to use international airspace safely and in accordance with international law," it added.

The Chinese embassy in Washington DC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the past, China has said that the United States sending ships and aircraft into the South China Sea is not good for peace.

US military planes and ships routinely carry out surveillance operations and travel through the region.

China claims vast swathes of the South China Sea that overlap with the exclusive economic zones of Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Trillions of dollars in trade flow every year through the waterway, which also contains rich fishing grounds and gas fields.

In a meeting with his Chinese counterpart in November, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin raised the need to improve crisis communications, and also noted what he called dangerous behaviour by Chinese military planes.

Despite tensions between the United States and China, US military officials have long sought to maintain open lines of communication with their Chinese counterparts to mitigate the risk of potential flare-ups or deal with any accidents.

Australia's defence department said in June that a Chinese fighter aircraft dangerously intercepted an Australian military surveillance plane in the South China Sea region in May.

Australia said the Chinese jet flew close in front of the RAAF aircraft and released a "bundle of chaff" containing small pieces of aluminium that were ingested into the Australian aircraft's engine.

In June, Canada's military accused Chinese warplanes of harassing its patrol aircraft as they monitored North Korea sanction evasions, sometimes forcing Canadian planes to divert from their flight paths.

Relations between China and the United States have been tense, with friction between the world's two largest economies over everything from Taiwan and China's human rights record to its military activity in the South China Sea.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan in August infuriated China, which saw it as a US attempt to interfere in its internal affairs. China subsequently launched military drills near the island.

The United States has no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan but is bound by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself.

I have long since believed that in spite of all the vigilance that can be infused into Post Commanders, that the Specie regulations of the Treasury Dept. have been violated, and that mostly by Jews and other unprincipled traders. So well satisfied of this have I been at this that I instructed the Commanding Officer at Columbus to refuse all permits to Jews to come south, and frequently have had them expelled from the Dept. But they come in with their Carpet sacks in spite of all that can be done to prevent it. The Jews seem to be a privileged class that can travel any where. They will land at any wood yard or landing on the river and make their way through the country. If not permitted to buy Cotton themselves they will act as agents for someone else who will be at a Military post, with a Treasury permit to receive Cotton and pay for it in Treasury notes which the Jew will buy up at an agreed rate, paying gold. There is but one way that I know of to reach this case. That is for Government to buy all the Cotton at a fixed rate and send it to Cairo, St Louis, or some other point to be sold. Then all traders, they are a curse to the Army, might be expelled.

It looks like the covid pandemic is just about over in Israel.

The pandemic will be officially declared over next month, with the coronavirus being downgraded to the status of the flu.

Breitbart reports: On the last day of January, the coronavirus will be categorized alongside influenza. The pandemic control center will be shuttered, and Covid patients will no longer require isolation.

According to Professor Cyrille Cohen, a member of the Health Ministry’s advisory council for clinical Covid vaccine trials, the goal was to get the virus to an “endemic” stage, with the disease spreading at an expected rate.

“We’re hoping that our health care system can cope with these winter infections, including Covid,” Cohen told i24NEWS.

“We are more in a scenario where we are behaving like any other viral disease in the winter,” he added, noting that most of the public had moved on from the pandemic with less mask-wearing and many people not getting tested.

Meanwhile, the former head of the Israel Institute for Biological Research, the government institution behind Israel’s failed coronavirus vaccine-attempt, this week drew outrage after tweeting he made a mistake by allowing himself to be vaccinated by the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine.

“I erred three times: when I received the first dose, the second dose and the third dose,” Prof. Shmuel Shapira posted this week.

In an interview with Channel 12 News last week, Shapira said he sought to “warn against those who say it saved many lives in Israel. It has many severe side effects, and apparently people have lost their lives because of it. They’re trying to paper this over a bit.”
