F-22s Scrambled To Investigate Suspicious High-Altitude Balloon Off The Coast Of Hawaii

The intercept of a mysterious balloon near Kauai's north shore is peculiar for a number of reasons.

Fighters were scrambled by Pacific Air Forces on Monday, February 14 in order to intercept an unmanned balloon floating off the coast of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. U.S. Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) has confirmed the incident but has not released additional details given that the incident is still being investigated.

The Adjudant General of Hawaii, the state’s top-ranking military officer, posted a statement to Twitter saying that “Indo-Pacific Command detected a high-altitude object floating in air in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands. In accordance with homeland defense procedures, Pacific Air Forces launched tactical aircraft to intercept and identify the object, visually confirming an unmanned balloon without observable identification markings.” It has not been officially confirmed which exact aircraft were launched, but the only fighters based in Hawaii proper are F-22s, which have the quick-reaction alert mission and are typically scrambled in response to aircraft in distress, unidentified aircraft and even vessels, hijackings, and potential adversary movements in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands. Local residents and officials also state that F-22 were the aircraft that went to check out the balloon.

Kauai County Councilwoman Felicia Cowen told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that she heard two booms, both loud enough to shake her house. “I would like to understand what were the powerful explosion sounds that were strong enough to shake my house in Kilauea, Kauai, and what looked like smoke in the sky. Was any object hit and did it explode? If so, what was it, and why?” However, an Air Force spokesperson told the paper on Thursday, February 17 that the “responding aircraft did not destroy the balloon.” The spokesperson continued that the service is “actively monitoring it via joint capabilities and it is under evaluation,” adding that “we don’t have anything else to provide at this time."

More Senior Bankers Implicated In Leaks About Federal "Block Trading" Probe

Following reports earlier this week that several big-name short sellers had their offices raided by federal agents as part of an SEC/DoJ investigation into "spoofing,""scalping" and illegal short-selling, more senior bankers are being outed as targets in the other ongoing SEC/DoJ probe targeting big name banks and hedge funds: that is, the investigation into "block trading" which - as it turns out - does involve the market-moving block trades that resulted from the Archegos collapse.

A team of Bloomberg reporters revealed on Friday that in addition to Morgan Stanley executive Pawan Passi, a number of other senior bankers who were found to be among Passi's "frequent contacts" are also having their communications examined with a fine-toothed comb by a team of federal investigators. They include the following:

The list of people whose communications are being sought ranges from executives at prominent Wall Street hedge funds, such as Andrew Liebeskind at Citadel’s Surveyor Capital and Jon Dorfman at Element Capital Management, to money managers at smaller firms focusing on block trades, including executives at CaaS Capital Management and Islet Management, and a former employee at Segantii Capital Management, the people said.

Bankers include Felipe Portillo, a risk executive within Credit Suisse Group AG’s equity capital markets group, Michael Daum, a partner at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and Michael Lewis, the head of U.S. equities cash trading at Barclays Plc, the people said. Lewis worked at Morgan Stanley until 2018.

According to BBG, being named here doesn't mean these people are "central" to the investigation - just that their names have "come up". Investigators are focusing on finding evidence of any particularly "well-timed" block trades

The inquiries from investigators show they’re interested, in part, in whether any money managers placed well-timed bets before block trades that have the power to drive down prices, according to the people. Even then, it’s unclear who, if anyone, might be suspected of leaking any material non-public information or acting on it.

Inside Morgan Stanley, Passi - who has apparently been on leave since late last year - is described by colleagues as "well-liked" and "low key". Several of Passi's colleagues at MS have also been ensnared in the probe. Their names are:

Authorities have been going over recordings of his phone calls, Bloomberg reported earlier this week. They’re also scrutinizing communications involving at least three of his colleagues at Morgan Stanley: Evan Damast, its global head of equity and fixed-income syndicate, John Paci, a senior equities trading executive, and Charles Leisure on the syndicate desk. They and Passi haven’t responded to messages seeking comment.

Durham Files Response to Sussmann’s Motion to Strike Paragraphs From Case

Special counsel John Durham, who is probing the origins of the counterintelligence investigation against Donald Trump’s campaign, filed late Thursday a response to former Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann’s motion to strike six paragraphs from Durham’s case against him.

Sussmann filed a motion (pdf) on Feb. 14 to strike six paragraphs that comprise the “Factual Background” section in Durham’s filing on Feb. 11.

Durham’s filing alleged that Trump’s residences and the White House were spied on by a tech executive aligned with the Democratic Party, who is identified in reports as Rodney Joffe.

Sussmann wrote in his Feb. 14 motion to strike, “Given the Special Counsel’s pattern of including unnecessary prejudicial material in public filings, there can be no doubt that the superfluous ‘Factual Background’ in the Special Counsel’s motion is intended to further politicize this case, inflame media coverage, and taint the jury pool.”

He said that “[a]pproximately half of this Factual Background provocatively—and misleadingly—describes for the first time Domain Name System (‘DNS’) traffic potentially associated with former President Donald Trump, including data at the Executive Office of the President (‘EOP’), that was allegedly presented to Agency-2 in February 2017.”

He continued: “These allegations were not included in the Indictment; these allegations post-date the single false statement that was charged in the Indictment; and these allegations were not necessary to identify any of the potential conflicts of interest with which the Motion is putatively concerned. Why then include them? The question answers itself.”

The indictment to which Sussmann referred is the filing from Durham in September 2021 (pdf). There, Durham alleged that Sussmann had told then-FBI General Counsel James Baker in September 2016 that he wasn’t working for any client when he met with Baker to provide information that purported to connect the Trump Organization to a Russian bank. The information has since been debunked.

Durham said in his filing on Thursday (pdf) that the court should deny Sussmann’s motion to strike the six paragraphs. He said it is “simply not true” that his office “intentionally sought to politicize this case, inflame media coverage, and taint the jury pool.”

Durham said that two paragraphs of “limited additional factual detail” had been included in the motion “for valid and straightforward reasons.”

“First, those paragraphs reflect conduct that is intertwined with, and part of, events that are central to proving the defendant’s alleged criminal conduct,” Durham wrote. “Second, the Government included these paragraphs to apprise the Court of the factual basis for one of the potential conflicts described in the Government’s Motion, namely, that a member of the defense team was working for the Executive Office of the President of the United States (‘EOP’) during relevant events that involved the EOP.”

Durham said that if media outlets or third parties had misinterpreted or misrepresented facts in his motion against Sussmann, “that does not in any way undermine the valid reasons for the Government’s inclusion of this information.”

As such, “there is no basis to strike any portion of the Government’s Motion,” Durham wrote, adding that the government intends to file motions “in which it will further discuss these and other pertinent facts to explain why they constitute relevant and admissible evidence at trial.”

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy announced Friday that he tested positive for COVID-19.

Murthy, who is fully vaccinated, said that his wife and 4-year-old son also tested positive for the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus and developed mild symptoms. Previously, he announced his 5-year-old daughter contracted the virus and is now recovering.

“Update: my 5 year old son, my wife Alice, and I have all tested positive for COVID-19. Our son has a runny nose and low grade fever but is otherwise eating, drinking, playing with his sister, and watching his favorite cartoons,” Murthy wrote. “My four year old daughter who tested positive first is doing ok. Fevers are starting to improve. She’s still congested and is now hoarse from all the coughing, but thankfully she’s still smiling and enjoying her arts and crafts.”

Murthy, who confirmed his symptoms are “mild,” also wrote that “when you’ve been as safe as you can, getting COVID-19 can be frustrating and disappointing. I’ve felt that. It can also be a source of shame. Many people assume you must have been careless to get sick. Our safety measures reduce risk but they can’t eliminate risk. Nothing can.”

As numerous studies have shown the COVID-19 Omicron variant is highly infectious and easily infects vaccinated individuals, it’s not clear why he suggested that one would feel shame for contracting a highly contagious virus.

Murthy, who previously mounted a defense of the Biden administration’s controversial vaccine mandate for private businesses with 100 or more workers, recommended on Friday that people get the vaccine and a booster if eligible.

His positive COVID-19 test comes as a number of Democrat-led states and municipalities have started to rescind vaccine or mask mandates. In the past week, authorities in Washington and Philadelphia announced they would end their vaccine passport rules for restaurants and other venues—for now.

And this month, so far, the governors of New Jersey, California, Oregon, Connecticut, and Delaware have announced plans to roll back mask mandates. However, some of the states will still require masks in schools.

On Wednesday, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walenksy told reporters that the Atlanta-based health agency is not considering changing its mask recommendation and mandate for public transportation. Walensky’s rationale was that the agency, under its 2020 guidelines, will only do so if community transmission drops.

“We recognize the importance of not just cases, which continue to result in substantial or high community transmission and over 97 percent of our counties in the country, but critically, medically severe disease that leads to hospitalizations,” she said.

FIRST ON FOX: House Republican Conference chair Elise Stefanik of New York endorsed Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney's primary opponent, Harriet Hageman, on Friday.

The endorsement illustrates a further shift away from Cheney by the House GOP Caucus, after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., threw his endorsement behind Hageman Thursday.

"I’m proud to endorse Harriet Hageman in her race to unseat Liz Cheney," Stefanik said in a press release exclusively obtained by Fox News Digital. "House Republicans were ready for a change when I took over as Conference Chair, and it’s resoundingly clear that Wyoming families are too."

After once holding Stefanik's role as House Republican Conference chair, Cheney has angered some fellow Republicans by criticizing former President Donald Trump for his false claims about the 2020 election being stolen and for his actions around the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Cheney was the most high-profile of the 10 House Republicans to vote 13 months ago to impeach Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 riot, and she is vice chair of the House Jan. 6 committee, in defiance of Republican leadership.

"Liz Cheney abandoned her constituents to become a Far-Left Pelosi puppet," she continued. "Liz sadly belongs in an MSNBC or CNN news chair, not in Congress representing Wyoming—a state that voted for President Trump by over forty points."

"Harriet is a true America First patriot who will restore the people of Wyoming’s voice that has been long forgotten by Liz Cheney," Stefanik added.

Former first lady Melania Trump on Friday announced her latest initiative to help America’s children, an extension of her Be Best efforts while in the White House. She explained she has been “laying the groundwork” for a project focusing on children in the foster care system.

Her latest project, Fostering the Future, will “work to secure educational opportunities and scholarships for children,” she announced in a statement.

“Scholarship recipients will learn in a supportive environment, gaining knowledge critical to realizing job security within the technology sector. By providing access to computer science education, these individuals will be prepared to enter the workforce and ultimately reach financial independence,” she wrote, noting that many children in the foster care system “lack the support and stability to finish their education and gain meaningful employment.”

The former first lady cited statistics from the National Foster Youth Institute, revealing that just half of foster children finish high school, and only three percent go on to earn a college degree.

“To avoid confusion, I do not operate a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. In simple terms, ‘Fostering the Future’ is the name of my platform. Fostering the Future is a Be Best initiative,” she clarified, adding that she is working with the Bradley Impact Fund, a “donor-advised fund, to select charities that support foster children.”

“The Bradley Impact Fund will disburse funds raised through the efforts of Fostering the Future to the respective beneficiaries.” She added:

With the assistance of various agencies and individuals in the foster care community, we are currently identifying foster children from across our Nation interested in receiving scholarships. These individuals will have the ability to take advantage of the opportunity to learn computer sciences this year.

Melania Trump also addressed what she described as “false reports” surrounding her initiative, detailing a Silicon Valley school with a campus in Oklahoma refusing to work with Fostering the Future at what seemed to be the last minute. According to Trump, “multiple scholarships were going to be granted through the school’s preferred designated fund.”

“They would not accept scholarship dollars for deserving students—even as an anonymous gift. It was made clear to me that the school’s Board of Directors organized a politically-motivated decision,” she said, noting she was “disappointed but not surprised.”

Trump continued:

This is not the first time where politics got in the way of my mission to support children. In fact, I tried to galvanize partners to broaden the impact of Be Best while in the White House and was outright rejected. For example, a prospective corporate partner refused an opportunity to further our shared philanthropic goals surrounding my visit to Africa.

Supporting children is not, and should never be, part of a political agenda. Imagine the opportunities we could create if we all worked together to support our children and committed to helping them fulfill their hopes and dreams.

Trump ended her press release by criticizing members of the mainstream media, who she said continue to “publish inaccurate, misleading, and outright incorrect articles” about her work.

“The media has created a narrative whereby I am trying to act in an illegal or unethical manner. That portrayal is simply untrue and adversely affects the children I hope to support. Powerful Gas Pipeline Explosion Rocks Eastern Ukraine

(Update 4:48pm ET): In the overnight hours local time a massive gas pipeline explosion is being reported, with a fire raging at the site. Early unconfirmed reports suggest the powerful explosion rocked a part of the pipeline in the pro-Russian separatist region, in or near the city of Luhansk.

Federal Reserve approves stricter trading rules

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve on Friday formally adopted sweeping new rules that will limit the ability of its top officials to invest in financial markets, a change intended to prevent conflicts of interest involving investments affected by Fed policies.

The stricter rules were developed after an outcry last year over questionable trades that were made by several top Fed policymakers.

Under the new rules, Fed officials may not invest in individual stocks, bonds or cryptocurrencies and are limited to diversified investments such as mutual funds. They must provide 45 days’ notice of any trade and secure approval of such trades. And they will have to provide public notice of any trades made in the previous 30 days.

Chair Jerome Powell announced the rules in October after ethics questions engulfed several high-ranking policymakers about trades they had made in securities that stood to be affected by Fed actions at the time. The central bank’s decisions on interest rates and bank regulations can cause significant swings in the prices of stocks, bonds and other securities.

Powell himself had come under fire after it was revealed that two regional Federal Reserve Bank presidents traded stocks and other investments in the spring of 2020 while the Fed was taking expansive steps to boost the economy and calm financial markets. As a result, the trades raised the possibility of conflicts of interest, because the two officials could have profited from the Fed’s actions.

The new rules will also cover senior vice presidents at the Fed’s 12 regional banks, research directors at the regional banks and senior staff members at the Fed in Washington as well as their spouses. The rules will take effect May 1.

Pentagon Stonewalls Probe Into COVID Vaccine Mandate

The Pentagon has repeatedly stonewalled a congressional investigation into the Biden administration’s coronavirus vaccine mandate for military members and is withholding information about the number of active-duty service members who could be expelled from the military for refusing the vaccine.

For four months, Sen. Ron Johnson (R., Wis), ranking member of the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, has been pressing the Defense Department to turn over information related to the military’s coronavirus vaccine mandate, including the total number of shots administered across all service branches. The Pentagon has broken its promise to provide this information on two separate occasions, generating accusations the Biden administration is withholding this data from Congress.

"DoD’s consistent failure to respond to my requests in a timely manner is unacceptable particularly when my questions relate to the health and well-being of service members," Johnson wrote in his third request for information, sent to the Pentagon on Thursday and obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

The Biden administration’s refusal to be transparent with Congress about the military vaccine mandate is reaching a critical juncture as many active-duty military members face expulsion for refusing the shot. Around 40,000 active service members in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines face expulsion for challenging the vaccine mandate, though the number could be higher or lower, according to unofficial estimates by congressional investigators. Johnson and Republican colleagues in both the House and Senate are warning that the vaccine requirement could cripple the military's readiness as conflicts brew in Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

"Given that DoD is still discharging service members who ‘refuse to be vaccinated for COVID-19,’ I am concerned that your actions may threaten our defense capabilities," Johnson wrote. "I am sure you realize that you cannot discharge thousands of service members who are not fully vaccinated and hope to maintain any semblance of military readiness. The men and women of the armed forces who put their lives on the line to defend this country deserve your full transparency and cooperation with congressional oversight."

As the Pentagon stonewalls congressional probes into the matter, whistleblowers have stepped forward with internal Pentagon documents about the vaccine mandate. They appear to confirm that around 8 percent of active-duty military members are still unvaccinated and stand to be booted for their refusal.

Approximately 76 percent of the military is fully vaccinated, while 16 percent are partially vaccinated, according to a January internal Pentagon briefing marked unclassified but for official use only. The document was leaked to Congress by a lawyer representing Defense Department whistleblowers and reviewed by the Free Beacon.

The document contains detailed information about the military vaccine mandate and the Pentagon’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. It was released internally—but not to Congress—last month after Johnson requested this exact information in his first investigation letter, which is dated Oct. 12, 2021.

Johnson again requested this information on December 15, 2021, after the Pentagon ignored his initial letter. On Jan. 10—after the Pentagon had released its internal COVID briefing—Biden administration officials promised to provide Johnson and Congress with this information by March 31.

On Friday, the Canadian Parliament canceled its debate over Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s invocation of the Emergencies Act because of the ongoing police crackdown on the trucker convoy protests in Ottawa.

In an unprecedented move earlier this week, Trudeau announced the use of the Emergencies Act against the truckers, granting himself the wide range of powers that he is currently using to punish the grassroots uprising.

Although Trudeau’s decision went into effect immediately, both the Canadian Senate and House of Commons must vote to uphold the Emergency Act for it to remain in place. They are usually permitted 5 days of debate – Friday would have been day 5 – but the final session was abruptly canceled…

…And on the same day that Trudeau unleashed the full force of law enforcement granted to him under the act to disperse and arrest protesters in Ottawa, no less.

Nevertheless, Canadian Parliament Members were told to take the day off over “safety” concerns, as cops begin beating the overwhelmingly peaceful protesters and dragging them away.

Closed-door meetings are expected to continue throughout the weekend, with a vote on whether or not to uphold Trudeau’s unprecedented use of the Act still set for Monday.

Speaker of the House Anthony Rota made the announcement early Friday morning.

“The #HoC [House of Commons] will not sit today, Friday, February 18. A police operation is expected in the downtown core of Ottawa. Given these exceptional circumstances, and following discussion with all recognized party leadership, the sitting today is cancelled.”

Rota continued:

“As per the Parliamentary Protective Service’s (PPS) most recent email notification, a police operation is expected to take place on Wellington Street and other locations in the downtown core of Ottawa.

We wish to remind everyone that safety is paramount. The situation is ever-changing. The continued presence of vehicles and demonstrators associated with the convoy, alongside police operations, will impact the downtown core.

If you are not in the House of Commons precinct, stay away from the downtown core until further notice

The PPS will advise when it is safe to return downtown. Should you already be in the precinct, please remain in the building and await further instructions from PPS officers. Please stay close to your devices and watch for updates from the PPS.”

The decision to fully cancel Friday’s debate is questionable at best, especially since the capability to hold the session virtually through zoom is already in place. After all, virtual meetings are how governments across the world, including Canada’s, functioned throughout the pandemic.

Document confirms US told Russia NATO won’t expand

A newly discovered document from March 1991 shows US, UK, French, and German officials discussing a pledge made to Russia that NATO will not expand to Poland and beyond. Its publication by the German magazine Der Spiegel on Friday proves Moscow right and NATO wrong on the matter.

The minutes of a March 6, 1991 meeting in Bonn between political directors of the foreign ministries of the US, UK, France, and Germany contain multiple references to “2+4” talks on German unification in which the West made it “clear” to the Soviet Union that NATO will not expand past the eastern borders of Germany.

“We made it clear to the Soviet Union – in the 2+4 talks, as well as in other negotiations – that we do not intend to benefit from the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Eastern Europe,” the document quotes US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Canada Raymond Seitz.

“NATO should not expand to the east, either officially or unofficially,” Seitz added.

A British representative also mentions the existence of a “general agreement” that membership of NATO for eastern European countries is “unacceptable.”

“We had made it clear during the 2+4 negotiations that we would not extend NATO beyond the Elbe,” said West German diplomat Juergen Hrobog. “We could not therefore offer Poland and others membership in NATO.”

The minutes later clarified he was referring to the Oder River, the boundary between East Germany and Poland. Hrobog further noted that West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher had agreed with this position as well.

The document was found in the UK National Archives by Joshua Shifrinson, a political science professor at Boston University in the US. It had been marked “Secret” but was declassified at some point.

Shifrinson tweeted on Friday he was “honored” to work with Der Spiegel on the document showing that “Western diplomats believed they had indeed made a NATO non-enlargement pledge.”
