Amman - The whereabouts of Lebanon's Central Bank head Riad Salameh is not known, and observers say he appears to be on the run after police raided his office and two homes. A Lebanese judge had issued a subpoena earlier this month for Salameh to appear for questioning after he failed to attend three hearings. Salameh has come under intense scrutiny since the collapse of Lebanon's banking sector in 2019.

Lebanese Investigative Judge Ghada Aoun told the Associated Press that Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh failed to show up for questioning for a fourth time on Tuesday. She alleges Salameh is defying judicial orders because he has protection from the ruling elite.

A senior judicial source told Dubai's The National newspaper that the State Security tried to bring Salameh in for questioning, but that he was not under arrest.

A Lebanese anti-corruption group known as The People Want to Reform the System, have filed a lawsuit against Salameh, accusing him of embezzlement, wasting public funds, illegal enrichment and money laundering, according to media reports.

Meanwhile, Germany, Luxembourg, France, Liechtenstein and Switzerland are also investigating him on suspicion of money lauFILE - Anti-government protesters chant slogans, during ongoing protests against the Lebanese government in front of the Central Bank, in Beirut, Lebanon, Feb. 1, 2020.

Many Lebanese believe the banker is in part responsible for Lebanon's dire financial crisis, which has seen the national currency lose more than 90% of its value, debt grow, and foreign reserves dry up. Denying any wrongdoing, Salameh has accused Judge Aoun of bias. News reports quote Salameh as saying he has asked for an audit of transactions and investments during his tenure that he says found no misuse of public money.

The 71-year-old central bank governor has held his position for nearly three decades, receiving support from many politicians, including Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

Professor Habib Malik of the Lebanese American University tells VOA that Salameh is seen as part of the wider problem involving the corrupt political elite.

"All of this focus on Salameh, he is basically the facilitator, the accountant. He is the one who helped some of these crooks over many years and certainly in 2019 to hide their money and take it out of the country. But they've been doing this from years before. They are the real source of the problem. I think he has a lot of information that can be damaging to a lot of these people. At the same time, I think he is also fearful for his life," said Malik.

The United States has initiated a number of actions to help Lebanon combat corruption. They have included placing sanctions in recent years on politicians such as former Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, whom U.S. officials in 2020 said had played a major role in corruption in Lebanon.

Malik urges the U.S. government to do more and work together with Europe to bring justice to the Lebanese people.

"The U.S. Treasury has an enormous amount of information about the money trail,' he said. 'All they have [to] do is work closely with some of these European countries and much of the picture can be pieced together. That is what the U.S. does before they slap sanctions on anyone. When the file is fully documented and no chance of refuting the charges, then they release it. These people can't get away indefinitely, but it requires a will. The West has the tools, do they have the will?"

Lebanese media outlets have reported that Salameh, his brother and an aide were allegedly involved in illegal businesses, including money transfers abroad, despite informal capital controls in Lebanon.

GENEVA, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) – From Feb. 17, Switzerland will lift almost all its COVID-19 restrictions, the country's Federal Council said on Wednesday, citing recent improvements in the epidemiological situation.

"Thanks to the high level of immunity among the population, it is unlikely that the healthcare system will be overburdened despite the continued high level of virus circulation," it said.

The only requirements that will remain until the end of March are the obligation for those who test positive for COVID-19 to self- isolate for five days and mandatory mask-wearing on public transportation and in healthcare institutions.

The wearing of masks will no longer be mandatory in shops, restaurants, workplaces and other public settings.

People in Switzerland will no longer be obliged to present a COVID certificate to enter bars, restaurants and other indoor venues, and the restrictions on the size of private gatherings and large events will be also lifted.

Health-related measures for European Union (EU) residents entering the country will also be lifted, meaning that it will no longer be necessary to provide proof of vaccination, recovery or a negative test at the border on entry, the Swiss government statement said.

"Switzerland is taking a decisive and important step towards normality," Ignazio Cassis, who holds the rotating Swiss presidency this year, told reporters on Wednesday.

Several other European countries, among them Denmark, Britain, France and the Netherlands, have also gradually eased COVID-19 measures in recent weeks.

The number of new COVID-19 cases increased markedly between mid-October 2021 and early February, with the average number of daily new infections surpassing 40,000. On Feb. 8, the authorities announced that the number of new infections had finally peaked, and it has since been falling steadily.

On Wednesday, the country reported 21,032 new cases. The seven-day average daily figure is now down by almost a quarter compared with the previous week.

According to official figures, more than 90 percent of the country's 8.6 million population have developed a certain immunity to the virus, having either recovered from an infection or been vaccinated.

'Operation Wanderlust': Dozens arrested in sex trafficking investigation

A suspect who drove from Boca Raton is connected to human trafficking in Hillsborough County, along with dozens of others arrested by deputies.

The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office said it rescued one victim and another potential victim of sex trafficking, who were both 15 years old.

The investigation, which was named "Operation Wanderlust," began in November 2021 with undercover detectives, officials said. They posed as minors online in the human trafficking section.

“The HCSO Human Trafficking Squad works diligently to save our children from becoming victims to sexual predators that use technology to hunt in the shadows of the internet,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "Through operations like Wanderlust, we are constantly taking a proactive approach to finding these predators, and our efforts will not stop."

During online chats, they would pose as teens as the suspects solicited sexual acts from the minors, and agreed to drive to meet their potential victims for sex. The suspects drove from all over Tampa Bay and from Boca Raton, officials said.

John Getejanc was arrested in Boca Raton, deputies said.

LOS ANGELES - Law enforcement arrested 179 people for allegedly soliciting, facilitating and seeking sex services in the Los Angeles area during the 10 days leading up to the Super Bowl, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore told the Police Commission Tuesday.

Eighty-nine people were arrested for alleged street prostitution and 70 were arrested at hotels and other locations where they had been allegedly been called for sex services, Moore said. An additional 14 people were arrested for allegedly facilitating or orchestrating "sex trafficking" and six people were arrested for attempting to buy sex services, according to Moore.

Four people who were identified as being victims of sex trafficking were put in contact with organizations that provide shelter and services to help them transition out of sex trafficking, the police chief said.

He told the Police Commission Tuesday that the Los Angeles Police Department worked with the sheriff's department and the Department of Homeland Security on focused enforcement against human trafficking, which he said mega events like the Super Bowl can attract. Law enforcement, LAX, advocacy groups and the California Attorney General worked to spread awareness about sex trafficking ahead of the Super Bowl, including through the "It's A Penalty" campaign, which began in 2014 to harness the attention around sports to spread awareness about human trafficking.

Some critics have argued that the narrative about prostitutes and sex trafficking victims flocking to Super Bowl cities during the event is a myth. The claim was even rated as "mostly false" by the fact-checking website Snopes. But the event annually prompts large-scale, coordinated enforcement campaigns by local and federal law enforcement, along with community advocacy groups, aimed at cracking down on sex-trafficking and rescuing victims.

Law enforcement also focused its resources ahead of the Super Bowl on counterfeit merchandise. Moore said Tuesday that more than 1,000 items were recovered with a value totaling more than $120,000. Five people were arrested.

Justin Trudeau’s Justice Minister, David Lametti on Wednesday said that being pro-Trump is a factor that will decide if your bank account is seized or frozen under Trudeau’s Emergency Orders.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (Castro Jr.) this week invoked the Emergency Act to break up the Freedom Convoy and freeze funding for the truckers.

Trudeau is also using the Emergency Orders to freeze personal accounts of people who donated to the trucker convoy.

Christian crowdfunding platform GiveSendGo was back online Tuesday after being hacked by crazy leftists.

The platform has been under attack for hosting a fundraiser for the Canadian trucker Freedom Convoy and refusing to comply with an order from the Canadian government to freeze the funds.

Now the donors to the freedom convoy are being harassed, threatened and fired.

Justice Minister David Lametti said if you are part of a pro-Trump movement you should be worried that your account will be seized.

“If you are a member of a pro-Trump movement who’s donating hundreds of thousands of dollars… you ought to be worried,” Lametti said.

A judge has temporarily blocked the release of Bob Saget’s death records and photos at the request of his family.

The “Full House” actor’s family sued the Orange County Sheriff and the District Nine Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday, as they both investigated the death and have access to the records.

Circuit Judge Vincent Chiu granted the temporarily injunction on the grounds the release of the records would cause “severe mental pain, anguish, and emotional distress" for his family, and "would cause immediate and widespread dissemination of the Records to the internet, as well as print and television media outlets," USA Today reported.

The lawsuit said it would cause harm to his wife and three daughters for the records to be released as they include pictures and videos that "graphically depict Mr. Saget, his likeness or features or parts of him."

“While we are sensitive to the family’s concerns about the right to privacy, that must be balanced with our commitment to transparency, compliance with the law, and the public’s right to know,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement to USA Today.

Saget died in a Florida hotel room in January from head trauma, with investigators finding no drugs or alcohol in his system.

Authorities "concluded that he accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep."

The Hill has reached out to the sheriff’s office and examiner’s office for comment.

PARIS, Feb 16 (Reuters) - France on Wednesday said a decision on salvaging Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers was just days away and that it was now up to Tehran to make the political choice while Tehran called on Western powers to be "realistic."

Indirect talks between Iran and the United States on reviving the tattered agreement resumed last week after a 10-day hiatus and officials from the other parties to the accord Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia have shuttled between the two sides as they seek to close gaps.

Western diplomats previously indicated they hoped to have a breakthrough by now, but tough issues remain unresolved. Iran has rejected any deadline imposed by Western powers.

"We have reached tipping point now. It's not a matter of weeks; it's a matter of days," French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told parliament, adding that the Western powers, Russia and China were in accord on the outlines of the accord.

"Political decisions are needed from the Iranians. Either they trigger a serious crisis in the coming days, or they accept the agreement which respects the interests of all parties."

Iran's lead nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani responded in a tweet, calling on Western powers "to be realistic, avoid intransigence and heed lessons of past 4yrs. Time for their serious decisions."

"After weeks of intensive talks, we are closer than ever to an agreement; nothing is agreed until everything is agreed, though," he tweeted.

Several other sources tracking the talks said that the next couple of days would be crucial in determining whether there was a way to revive the agreement.

The pact began to unravel in 2018 when then-President Donald Trump withdrew the United States and reimposed broad economic sanctions on Iran, which prompted Tehran to breach the deal's limits on its uranium enrichment activity a year later.

Diplomats and analysts say the longer Iran remains outside the deal, the more nuclear expertise it will gain, shortening the time it might need to race to build a bomb if it chose to, thereby vitiating the accord's original purpose. Tehran denies it has ever sought to develop nuclear arms.

Western diplomats say they are now in the final phase of the talks and believe that a deal is within reach.

'MOMENT OF TRUTH'

"We are coming to the moment of truth. If we want Iran to respect its (nuclear) nonproliferation commitments and in exchange for the United States to lift sanctions, there has to be something left to do it," Le Drian said.

Iran's foreign ministry said on Monday it was "in a hurry" to strike a new deal as long as its national interests were protected and that restoring the pact required "political decisions by the West".

Individual Pleads Guilty to Acting Within the United States on Behalf of Russian Government

A Mexican national, who was residing in Singapore, pleaded guilty yesterday to acting within the United States on behalf of a foreign government without notifying the Attorney General.

According to court documents, Hector Alejandro Cabrera Fuentes, 36, acted under the direction and control of an individual he believed to be a Russian government official. Instructed by this Russian official, Fuentes, a Mexican citizen who has spent significant time in Russia, arranged for an intermediary to lease a unit in a specific residential building in Miami-Dade County, Florida, where a specified U.S. person, who had previously provided information about the Russian government to the U.S. government, resided.

Furthermore, at the direction of the same Russian official, Fuentes traveled to Miami in February 2020 to obtain the license plate number and parking location of the specified U.S. person’s car, and to provide this information to the Russian official upon his next trip to Russia.

Fuentes’s travel companion, at his request, took a photo of the specified U.S. person’s car. A WhatsApp message from Fuentes’s travel companion to Fuentes contained a close-up photograph of the specified U.S. person’s car. The manner in which Fuentes communicated with the Russian government official and his undertakings in this case are consistent with the tactics of the Russian intelligence services for spotting, assessing, recruiting and handling intelligence assets and sources.

Fuentes had not notified the U.S. Attorney General, as required by law, that he was acting in the United States as an agent of the Russian government.

Fuentes is scheduled to be sentenced on May 17, in Miami, and faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division, U.S. Attorney Juan Antonio Gonzalez for the Southern District of Florida, and Director of Field Operations Vernon T Foret of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Miami Field Office made the announcement.

The FBI and CBP are investigating the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Thakur for the Southern District of Florida and Trial Attorney Matthew J. McKenzie of the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section are prosecuting the case.

Iran and world powers are on the brink of reaching an agreement on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, Tehran’s top negotiator has said, though he added that the ball was now on the side of the deal’s other partners.

“After weeks of intensive talks, we are closer than ever to an agreement,” Ali Bagheri announced on Twitter late on Wednesday.

However, the diplomat warned against celebrating too soon, pointing out that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.”

He advised Iran’s negotiating partners to “be realistic, avoid intransigence” and refrain from repeating their past mistakes in dealing with his country. Tehran was still expecting “serious decisions” from the other side, Bagheri said.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian also spoke about the deal on Thursday, telling his country’s Senate that “it is not a question of weeks, it is a question of days.”

“We need political decisions from the Iranians. They have a very clear choice,” Le Drian said, warning that Tehran will “unleash a serious crisis in the next days” by not signing the agreement.

The talks to revive the landmark Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) have been underway in Austrian capital Vienna since April last year. They’ve been difficult and were interrupted several times by long breaks.

The UK, China, France, Germany and Russia are directly negotiating with Iran, while the US remains an indirect participant of the process. Those countries were the signees of the original deal in 2015.

Under the JCPOA, Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear military program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against it.

However, in 2018, then-US president Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew Washington from the landmark agreement, which he described as “the worst deal ever,” and imposed a raft of new restrictions on Tehran.

The move stunned the other signees, while prompting Iran to renege on its commitments and return to enriching uranium.

Attempts to revive the deal began after Joe Biden replaced Trump in the White House.

In early February, the US lifted some sanctions against Tehran, allowing foreign companies to engage in certain civilian projects at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power station and some other facilities.

The move was seen as an attempt to facilitate the successful outcome of the negotiations in Vienna.

“Fake Philanthropists” Lure Liberia’s Kids Into The Unknown

The average Liberia family is under extreme socio-economic stress, compelled to fend sometimes without success, for each day’s meals. With no job and no job opportunities for moms, dads, and other extended members of the family for months and years on end, there is no telling how intense the rat race for survival in most homes is.

They want out: fathers, mothers, kids. In their desperation they have been groping for support, reaching out for any hand that seems to offer one, as a drowning man would do.

In order to help ease the situation, some families, in recent years, resorted to giving their kids to affluent families or individuals in the hope that the kids will survive the difficulties and help them in the future.

But it seems they were treading a quicksand and now it is clear that most of the kids taken away in past years on promises of a better tomorrow may never be seen alive.

A recent U.S. State Department report on Liberia says most of the kids who were taken away by child traffickers are currently being used as sex slaves or streets hawkers.

Now the State Department is requesting that the Liberian government to do something about the drain on Liberia’s humanity, human resources, and future, The Analyst Staff Writer reports.

“Liberia is a source, transit, and destination country for children trafficked for forced labor and sexual exploitation; the government must therefore integrate into each of these large objectives strategies for combating trafficking in persons.”

These were the words of a U.S. State Department report released early this month. While the report conceded that the issue of child and human trafficking in Liberia is a special case because it was in political transition during the reporting period, it indicated that Liberia’s trafficking picture has become grave and requires urgent government intervention.

“Most trafficking occurs within the country, though some children are trafficked to Liberia from Sierra Leone, Guinea and Cote d’Ivoire and from Liberia to Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, The Gambia, and Nigeria,” the report said.

The reports did not also say how and under what conditions these children were taken from their parents and guardians, but noted that they were trafficked for domestic servitude, sexual exploitation, agricultural labor, and street vending.

Those trafficked by individuals from neighboring Cote d’Ivoire, the report said, were used to fight a proxy war in which they were used as guinea pigs at battlefronts to test the safety of the terrains.

“There are reports as well ofsome orphanages obtaining children through abductionor fraudulent means and exploiting those children in the commercial sex trade or for hawking in the street,” the report revealed, adding that the NTGL was unable to deal with the problem because some of its members allied with rebel groups that were involved in trafficking in persons for the Ivorian war.

Some kids as young as five months, according to recent reports, were abducted by white folks who come into the country under the guise of rendering humanitarian services.

“Some womenon the Mercy Ship use their Liberians contacts to take away childrenunder the guise of adoption without the proper involvement of the government. Also involved in this practice are heads of some mushroom churches with contacts in the U.S.,” one resident of New Kru Town told The Analyst recently.

Employees at a Burlington, Ontario bakery are being harassed online and at their place of business after it was revealed that one of the owners donated to the Freedom Convoy fundraiser.

In an interview with True North, Kelly’s Bake Shoppe co-owners Erinn Weatherbie and Kelly Childs stood by their $1,000 donation but say they are dismayed by the harassment they are now receiving from angry members of the public.

Weatherbie and Childs told True North about one such encounter, where a middle-aged man confronted their all-female staff over the donation at 6:15 pm on Tuesday evening.

“A man entered the bake shop and waited in line as if he was going to place an order. When one of our staff members had a chance to help him out and welcome him to the shop, he basically aggressively responded to them,” said Weatherbie.

“He said ‘Did you donate $1,000 to the trucker convoy? Do you support traitors? It’s all over social media. Were your staff involved in donating?’ He was very aggressive, and he also kept one of his hands in his pocket the whole time.
