Election Investigators Make Surprise Move in WI, Blanket State with Subpoenas Related to 2020 Election

The investigation into Wisconsin’s elections is still ongoing as special counsel Michael Gableman continues looking into how voting in the state was carried out in the 2020 general election.

Gableman is now issuing about 70 subpoenas to state entities and employees, special interest groups, private companies, mayoral staffers and IT departments, throughout Wisconsin to obtain records, depositions and more information on the election process and organizations that seem to have had a hand in the administration of elections.

Gableman, who was previously a Wisconsin Supreme Court justice, was asked by Speaker of the Wisconsin state Assembly Robin Vos to lead an investigation into the 2020 election in the state. Gableman agreed and was appointed as special counsel.

The investigation is looking into several components of what went on during the election. Gableman is looking into how Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the money he donated to the Center for Tech and Civic Life influenced the election, what the Wisconsin Election Commission was doing, the conduct of the mayors and the municipal clerks, the operation of the voting machines and other factors which might have influenced the election.

Wisconsin elections are not administered by the secretary of state, like in other states. Instead, Wisconsin’s Government Accountability Board works in collaboration with 1,853 municipal clerks, 72 county clerks and numerous election inspectors during election season.

Many municipal clerks throughout the state live in very small towns, but in contrast, there are clerks in Wisconsin’s five biggest cities: Madison, Racine, Kenosha, Green Bay and Milwaukee. The clerks, however, are not independent authorities and report to the mayor, the city’s common council or the state elections commission.

Now Gableman is specifically looking into these cities’ mayors, clerks and staffers and how they might have been influenced by funding from the CTCL, which, thanks to generous donations from Zuckerberg, gave approximately $350 million to communities to run elections.

A source close to the investigation told The Western Journal that, in short, CTCL approached these five Wisconsin cities and offered $8.8 million grants to help keep voters safe from COVID. The group reportedly offered this money even though the source said the federal government, under the Trump administration, had already given $7 million to make sure clerks had enough PPE, sanitation and anything else needed to keep voters safe from COVID-19.

According to the source, each mayor of the five cities took “good faith” money. Racine allegedly received $60,000 and the other four cities received $10,000 each. Once they took this initial grant, CTCL sent questionnaires to see if the five cities then qualified for the full $8.8 million grant, the source said.

The questionnaire asked what the city was going to do to drive up the vote in what they deemed were historically disenfranchised neighborhoods, according to the source.

Gableman already issued subpoenas to the mayors of the cities. The next round of subpoenas that have just been issued, according to the source, is to mayoral staffers and IT departments in order to find information on how the cities used the money from CTCL.

Already, hundreds of pages of emails between Milwaukee election officials and CTCL have been made public.

Abortion Leading Global Cause of Death in 2021 with 43 Million Killed

Abortion was the leading cause of death globally in 2021, with nearly 43 million unborn babies killed in the womb, according to data provided by Worldometer.

As of noon on December 31, 2021, there were 42.6 million abortions performed in the course of the year, Worldometer revealed, while 8.2 million people died from cancer, 5 million from smoking, 1.7 million of HIV/AIDS, 1.3 million from traffic fatalities, and 1 million from suicide.

Totaling all the deaths in the world from causes other than abortion reveals a figure of 58.7 million, meaning that abortions accounted for just over 42 percent of all human deaths in 2021.

By comparison, worldwide deaths from coronavirus in 2021 totaled around 3.5 million, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Worldometer — voted one of the best free reference websites by the American Library Association (ALA) — keeps a running tally through the year of major world statistics, including population, births, deaths, automobiles produced, books published, and CO2 emissions.

It also registers the total number of abortions performed worldwide, based on the latest statistics on abortions published by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Globally, there were more deaths from abortion in 2021 than all deaths from cancer, malaria, HIV/AIDS, smoking, alcohol, and traffic accidents combined, according to Worldometer statistics.

The startling number of deaths from abortion, in fact, has led certain observers to call abortion “the social justice cause of our time,” since the sheer magnitude of the problem completely overshadows other human rights issues.

On December 28, Christians around the world celebrated the Feast of the Holy Innocents, commemorating the slaughter of all male children in Israel under the age of two by order of King Herod in an effort to kill the newborn Christ child. Pope Francis has compared Herod’s massacre of the Innocents to the modern practice of killing babies through abortion.

The 49th annual March for Life in the United States will take place in Washington, D.C., on January 21, 2022, with the theme “Equality Begins in the Womb.”

“The pro-life movement recognizes the immense responsibility this nation bears to restore equal rights to its most defenseless citizens in the womb,” March for Life president Jeanne Mancini said at a press conference in October.

The stated purpose of the march is to end abortion by “uniting, educating, and mobilizing pro-life people in the public square.”

The annual march commemorates the infamous January 22, 1973, Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade which, together with the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey, nullifed 50 state laws and made abortion legal and available on demand throughout the United States.

More details released for Trump’s news conference on the anniversary of Jan. 6 Capitol protests

Further details have been released about President Trump’s planned press conference to be held on Jan. 6, 2022, the one-year anniversary of the storming of the United States Capitol building.

The press conference will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Jan. 6, 2022, at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla. During the press conference, Trump will highlight what he sees as the “real insurrection” he believes occurred on Nov. 3, 2020, and in the days leading up to the “stolen election.”

Upon announcing his planned Jan. 6 press conference, Trump said, “I will be having a news conference on January 6th at Mar-a-Lago to discuss all of these points, and more. He added, “Until then, remember, the insurrection took place on November 3rd, it was the completely unarmed protest of the rigged election that took place on January 6th,” he added.

Trump has previously filed a lawsuit to stop the Jan. 6 House Committee investigating the events of the Capitol storming from obtaining documents, claiming “executive privilege.” The lawsuit struck back hard at the committee, blasting it as an “illegal fishing expedition.”

“The Committee’s request amounts to nothing less than a vexatious, illegal fishing expedition openly endorsed by Biden and designed to unconstitutionally investigate President Trump and his administration. Our laws do not permit such an impulsive, egregious action against a former President and his close advisors,” the lawsuit states.

The 45th president released a statement in October claiming that the Jan. 6 committee had launched a “witch hunt” against him and those closest to him.

He once again made the claim that the true insurrection took place on Nov. 3, not Jan. 6.

Trump wrote: “The Unselect Committee of partisan Democrats, and two very weak and pathetic RINOs, should come to the conclusion after spending many millions of dollars, that the real insurrection happened on November 3rd, the Presidential Election, not on January 6th — which was a day of protesting the Fake Election results.”

The 45th president’s press conference will take place on the same day that Speaker Nancy Pelosi has planned for the House of Representatives to have a “program of events” to mark the anniversary of the Capitol storming.

The day will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a separate event held at the Capitol headlined by historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Jon Meacham, and will conclude with a candlelight vigil on the Capitol steps.

A federal judge has blocked President Joe Biden’s vaccine and mask mandate from being enforced in a program for low-income families, deeming the requirement for children to be masked and staff vaccinated unconstitutional.

Judge James ‘Wesley’ Hendrix ruled on Friday that the Department of Health’s vaccine and mask requirement for those involved with the Head Start program – which provides “education-related services to needy children” – was “unprecedented” and lacked Congressional approval.

“It is undisputed that an agency cannot act without Congressional authorization. Thus, the question here is whether Congress authorized HHS to impose these requirements,” Hendrix declared.

Calling the mandates “arbitrary” and “capricious,” the judge concluded that they should no longer be enforced.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott – a Republican – praised the judge’s decision on social media, boasting, “Texas just beat Biden again.”

The state of Texas has been engaged in a lengthy battle with the Biden administration over vaccine and mask mandates, with judges going back and forth over whether they should be enforced.

In October, Abbot signed an executive order banning all vaccine mandates in the state, ruling that “no entity in Texas can compel receipt of a Covid-19 vaccine by any individual” and that vaccines “should remain voluntary and never forced.”

A federal judge ordered United Airlines to halt its Covid-19 vaccine mandate that same month, while in November, Biden’s vaccine mandate for businesses was halted after the Texas attorney general filed a lawsuit.

In November, however, a federal judge overturned Abbott’s ban on school mask requirements.

D.C. Jail Cuts J6 Prisoners' Communications After Newsmax Interview

Jacob Lang has been awaiting trial without bail in the D.C. jail for his involvement in the January 6 riot at the Capitol for almost a year, along with many others who have been charged with crimes connected to that day. With no trial date in sight, he and his fellow inmates languish in a jail they say is inhumane. The J6 prisoners’ complaints about filthy conditions and inhumane treatment resulted in a surprise inspection that found everything they were saying was true. As a result, over 400 prisoners were moved to different facilities—none of them J6 prisoners.

Lang has been in contact with PJ Media and several other media sources and was recently giving an interview on Newsmax TV when the jail cut off his phone access. Afterward, Lang reported to PJ Media that the jail took away all access to the internet and cut off phone privileges for all the detainees. They are now on lockdown and Lang says he’s not even able to call his lawyer.

Regardless of what crimes these people are charged with, there is a protocol for how prisoners are supposed to be treated, especially pre-trial detainees who have the presumption of innocence. None of that seems to have been followed in the cases involving the J6 arrestees.

In a text sent to PJ Media by Lang’s family, Lang wrote, “I am being held in true solitary confinement, locked in my cell 22 hours a day. In response to my viral Newsmax interview yesterday, where the D.C. jail cut my interview mid-sentence, and the automated message rung [sic] out on live national TV, ‘this call is being terminated by the jail.’ I have now been completely cut off from the outside world! They have suspended my phone and tablet access. I cannot talk to my family or my attorney. I literally have nothing left but food and my Bible.”

Lang says he has “no lawyer access, no visitation, no calls, no haircuts, and no religious services.”

Lang is charged with assaulting a police officer and was seen on video wielding a baseball bat. He claims it was in self-defense and in the defense of others who were suffocating to death and being trampled. Lang also claims he did not bring the bat but found it on the ground. Lang says that police were attacking people, including Roseanne Boyland, who died after being pulled out from the bottom of a pile of people Lang says police created.

On December 27, a few days before the Newsmax interview, Lang spoke to PJ Media and said that the solitary confinement began before Christmas in response to alleged covid outbreaks. Lang says he doesn’t know anyone who is sick in his jail pod. “We are literally being mentally tortured in here,” he said. “Solitary confinement over 10 days was ruled by the Geneva convention to be cruel and unusual punishment and I’ve lived like that the first 200 days I got to this jail.” After that, the prisoners were given five hours a day out of their cells, which Lang says is a little better. But that all changed before Christmas. “Now we’re back to this 22-hour lockdown and two hours out a day.”

“They let out two or three people at a time so we get minor human interaction,” he said. “There are some people in here who have really been drained by this.”

Lang says they are treated like animals. “We are considered innocent until proven guilty and we are supposed to have all of our rights afforded to us except our freedom of movement,” he said. “Our privacy rights are supposed to be maintained. Our freedom of speech rights are supposed to be maintained. How could I have my freedom of speech rights if I’m locked in a cell away from my lawyer, away from my family, away from doing interviews?”

Lang is growing increasingly frustrated as no trial date has been set and there is no end in sight for how long he will be held without a trial. “I’ve lived [for] a year like this…they blame everything on covid. Where is it in the Constitution that during a bad flu season you can suspend everyone’s rights?”

The Washington Post reported on the massive lockdowns at the D.C. jail related to Covid in April and no one did anything about it.

It is an exporter, not an importer of capital. American capital markets are a convenience, not a necessity for Chinese companies.

Airlines file emergency request asking FCC to delay 5G rollout

A top airlines trade group on Thursday filed an emergency request for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to delay the rollout of 5G wireless service, citing concerns that the technology could cause disruptions for flights.

The group, Airlines for America, represents cargo airlines and passenger airlines in the U.S. It requested that the agency delay the use of the service near airports such as George Bush Airport in Houston, John F. Kennedy in New York and Newark Liberty in New Jersey, according to Bloomberg News.

AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. were given authorization by the FCC earlier this year to deploy C-Band spectrum 5G wireless with a rollout scheduled for Jan. 5. While the left was all over DeSantis, they ignored another governor who was on vacation while his state’s COVID cases spiked 600 percent in the last month — Democrat Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey.

New Jersey reported another 27,975 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, an increase of about 35 percent from the day before as Omicron hits the state. As of late Wednesday, there were 3,604 COVID hospitalizations — up 10 percent from the prior day and approaching the worst point of last year.

Murphy is the vice-chair of the National Governor’s Association and he was away on vacation when he called into the governors’ meeting with Joe Biden on Monday before Biden took off for the beach. Murphy was in Costa Rica from Dec 22 to Dec. 30, spending eight days there, despite the State Department telling Americans they should reconsider traveling to that country because of COVID. Aside from the one call with Biden, Murphy left everything else to his Lt. Governor.

‘It is fitting that President Biden escapes his responsibilities by traveling to a Delaware beach house after saying responses to COVID-19 should be left to the states, and then Governor Murphy runs off to a Costa Rican beach,’ said New Jersey Republican Representative Jeff Van Drew, who left the Democratic party last December.

Van Drew said that Murphy had left the state multiple times for personal trips yet is still imposing mandates on the citizens of New Jersey. Murphy also took a vacation in August when the state was hit with a huge Delta variant wave of cases.

‘If Governor Murphy can travel out of the country when the State Department urges the American people to stay put, Americans should be afforded the same discretion regarding their personal health choices just like our leaders,’ he added.

Prince of Wales warns of 'dire humanitarian situation' in his first New Year message

The Prince of Wales has issued a New Year plea for peace for persecuted people after being inspired by a Syrian refugee in Jordan who gave him apot of honey.

Prince Charles has not previously released a New Year message but is understood to have been particularly moved by his own recent travels, as well as the plight of those including Aung San Suu Kyi, the ousted and recently jailed leader of Myanmar, whom he has met on several occasions.

He was also deeply concerned about the “catastrophic” situation in Afghanistan, following the fall of Kabul, warning just before Christmas that a million children could die in the country this winter.

During a visit to Jordan with the Duchess of Cornwall in November, the Prince met Hudaifa, 30, who had lost everything during the Syrian civil war and was rebuilding his life with a grant from the International Rescue Committee, which he hoped to use to make a living as a beekeeper.

He gave the Prince a pot of his honey, which he found particularly touching. A palace source said: “It was a very simple, generous act from someone who did not have much. Somebody who had had a lot but lost everything.”

When he returned home, Prince Charles, himself a keen beekeeper, sent Hudaifa a pot of his own Highgrove honey in return.

The Prince’s New Year message, to be distributed across the world through British embassies and on social media, focuses on themes that prevail through both his and the Duchess’ charity work.

He said: “As we start a New Year, we might take a moment to remember the many people around the world who are standing up for freedom and human rights.

"In places such as Afghanistan, Syria and Myanmar, among others, the threats and reality of political and religious persecution and insecurity are coupled with an increasingly dire humanitarian situation.

“In the face of such adversity, incredibly brave individuals, local communities and international organisations are responding to great needs by providing vital assistance.

"I pray for peaceful resolutions to these conflicts and that we might all be blessed with the courage to support those in need, wherever they may be.”

Prince Charles became patron of the International Rescue Committee in January 2020. He is also president of theBritish Red Cross.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A state attorney representing Wisconsin’s chief elections administrator is trying to persuade a judge to block a subpoena demanding she submit to a private interview with a former state Supreme Court justice investigating the 2020 elections for Assembly Republicans.

Michael Gableman has subpoenaed Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe as part of his probe, demanding she submit to questioning at his office.

Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul filed a lawsuit in October to quash the Wolfe subpoena. Assistant Attorney General Gabe Johnson-Karp told Judge Rhonda Lanford during a hearing Thursday that the subpoena is too broad and Gableman can’t compel her to answer questions in private.

Lanford said she’d rule by Jan. 10.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — In his New Year's wishes to the world, Pope Francis encouraged people Saturday to focus on the good which unites them and decried violence against women while acknowledging that the coronavirus pandemic has left many scared and struggling amid economic inequality.

“We are still living in uncertain and difficult times due to the pandemic,” Francis said. “Many are frightened about the future and burdened by social problems, personal problems, dangers stemming from the ecological crisis, injustices and by global economic imbalances.”

Thousands of Rome residents and tourists, wearing face masks as protection against the spread of the coronavirus, gathered in St. Peter's Square on a sunny, mild day to hear Francis lay out his recipe for world peace, cheering his appearance.

Peace, the pope said, “demands concrete actions. It is built by being attentive to the least, by promoting justice, with the courage to forgive, thus extinguishing the fire of hatred.”

Francis also championed embracing a positive attitude, “one that always sees, in the Church as well as in society, not the evil which divides us, but the good that unites us.”

Earlier Saturday, in his homily during a Mass at St. Peter's Basilica, Francis publicly ushered in 2022 by praising the skills which women bring to promoting peace in the world, and he equated violence against women to an offense against God.

The Roman Catholic Church marks Jan. 1 as a day dedicated to world peace, and the basilica ceremony a paid tribute to the Virgin Mary's special place in the faith as the mother of Jesus.

Mothers “know how to overcome obstacles and disagreements, and to instill peace,” Francis said. “In this way, they transform problems into opportunities for rebirth and growth. They can do this because they know how to ‘keep,’ to hold together the various threads of life,” the pontiff said. “We need such people, capable of weaving the threads of communion in place of the barbed wire of conflict and division.”

He called for efforts to protect women.

"How much violence is directed against women! Enough! To hurt a woman is to insult God, who from a woman took on our humanity," the pope said, referring to the Christian belief that Jesus was the son of God.

He said women, including mothers, “look at the world not to exploit it but so that it can have life. Women who, seeing with the heart, can combine dreams and aspirations with concrete reality, without drifting into abstraction and sterile pragmatism.”

While pledging during his papacy to give women greater roles in the church, Francis has also made clear that the priesthood is reserved for men.

Except for the pope and members of a chorus made up of boys and adults, participants in the Mass wore face as part of COVID-19 precautions.

Francis, who is 85 and vaccinated against the coronavirus, wore a surgical mask during a New Year’s Eve prayer service which a Vatican cardinal presided over at the basilica. It was a rare departure from his shunning of masks during public ceremonies throughout the two-year pandemic.

In a tweet early Saturday morning, Francis elaborated on his hope and strategy for peace.

“All can work together to build a more peaceful world, starting from the hearts of individuals and relationships in the family, then within society and with the environment, and all the way up to relationships between peoples and nations,” Francis tweeted.

ANTARCTICA: NASA IMAGES REVEAL TRACES OF ANCIENT HUMAN SETTLEMENT UNDERNEATH 2.3 KM OF ICE

Washington, D.C. | Recently released remote sensing photography of NASA’s Operation IceBridge mission in Antarctica led to a fascinating discovery when images revealed what some experts believe could be the existence of a possible ancient human settlement lying beneath an impressive2.3kilometers of ice.

The intriguing discovery was made during aircraft tests trials of NASA’s Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) lidar technology set to be launched on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) in 2017, that aims to monitor changes in polar ice.

“There’s very little margin for error when it comes to individual photons hitting on individual fiber optics, that is why we were so surprised when we noticed these abnormal features on the lidar imagery,” explains Nathan Borrowitz, IceBridge’s project scientist and sea ice researcher with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

A human settlement buried under2.3km of ice

Leading archeologist, Ashoka Tripathi, of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Calcutta believes the images show clear evidence of an ancient human settlement beneath the ice sheet.

“These are clearly features of some sort of human-made structure, resembling some sort ofpyramidal structure.The patterns clearly show nothing we should expect from natural geomorphological formations found in nature. We clearly have here evidence of human engineering. The only problem is that these photographs were taken in Antarctica under 2 kilometers of ice. That is clearly the puzzling part, we do not have any explanation for this at the moment,” he admits.

“These pictures just reflect a small portion of Antarctica’s total land mass. There are possibly many other additional sites that are covered over with ice. It just shows us how easy it is to underestimate both the size and scale of past human settlements,” says Dr. Tripathi.

Remnants of a lost civilization

Historian and cartographer at the University of Cambridge, Christopher Adam, believes there might be a rational explanation.

“One of history’s most puzzling maps is that of the Turkish admiral Piri Reis in 1513 AD which successfully mapped the coastline of Antarctica over 500 years ago. What is most fascinating about this map is that it shows the coastline of Antarctica without any ice. How is this possible when images of the subglacial coastline of Antarctica were only seen for the first time after the development of ground-penetrating radar in 1958? Is it possible Antarctica has not always been covered under such an ice sheet? This could be evidence that it is a possibility” he acknowledges.

« A slight pole shift or displacement of the axis of rotation of the Earth in historical times is possibly the only rational explanation that comes to mind but we definitely need more research done before we jump to any conclusion.”

ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite 2), part of NASA’s Earth Observing System, is a planned satellite mission for measuring ice sheet mass elevation, sea ice freeboard as well as land topography and vegetation characteristics, and is set to launch in may 2017.

Melbourne Man Lights Himself on Fire Over Victoria’s Vaccine Mandates

A Melbourne man set himself on fire on New Year’s Day in an apparent protest against Victoria’s draconian COVID vaccine mandates.

Though police were able to extinguish the flames, the man has suffered life-threatening injuries. His current condition is not publicly known.

The man was on a busy street in Victoria when he pulled out a gas can and began dosing himself in it in front of diners and other witnesses.

Lydia O’Connor told The Herald Sun that she was dining nearby where the man was and heard him screaming about the vaccine mandates.

“He poured gas on himself and on his car. It was on purpose,” O’Connor said. “He was screaming about mandates. He was screaming: no vax ID and throwing books.”

She said that his burning flesh was stuck to her shirt.

Another witness told the paper that “he was off his face screaming about the mandates” and that his “skin was burning.”

Police officers, firefighters and five bystanders helped to put out the blaze. The driver’s side of his vehicle was left blackened and charred.

The Metro reports that “in November, Victoria introduced sweeping vaccine mandates for several industries, requiring workers to get the jab or show proof of medical exemption if they want to continue working onsite.”

“It applies in healthcare settings, schools, construction sites, retail and transport as well as several other industries.”

‘Despicable relic’: Epstein, Maxwell’s little black book scares off collectors

This little black book is too hot to handle.

Auction houses, collectors and true-crime experts see a limited market for Jeffrey Epstein’s “creepy” phone book listing names and numbers of the rich and famous. The scandalous book was used as evidence to help convict the late pedophile’s madam Ghislaine Maxwell this week for trafficking underaged girls for sex.

“It is unfathomable that Heritage Auctions or any other reputable auction house would ever offer such a despicable relic,” said Robert Wilonsky, spokesman for Dallas-based Heritage, which also has a location in Midtown.

“I wouldn’t buy it. Way too creepy for me,” celebrity Las Vegas pawnbroker Rick Harrison of History Channel’s “Pawn Stars” told The Post.

“But I’m sure Bill Clinton would pay millions for it,” he laughed. The former president was a known guest at Epstein’s Florida mansion.

One version of the book, a 92-page collection of typed contacts compiled by Maxwell and Epstein, was leaked by Gawker in 2015, and includes names and phone numbers of more than 1,000 celebrities, politicians and titans of business, including Prince Andrew, Alec Baldwin, Tony Blair, and Michael Bloomberg. Gawker claimed it found the directory in court documents.

The individuals listed in Epstein’s book have not been accused of or associated with any of Epstein’s or Maxwell’s crimes.

At least two copies of the directory existed. Staff at Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion were told to make sure there was a copy of the directory at both his and Maxwell’s bedsides, according to evidence submitted by prosecutors in her trial.

Prosecutors are expected to hold the directory used in the trial in a secure location pending an appeal from Maxwell. Its future after the appeals process is uncertain. Judge Alison Nathan ruled earlier this month that only a limited amount of material from the British socialite’s contacts book would be released under seal.

Experts say the Epstein/Maxwell directory seeps into the realm of “murderabilia” — collectibles associated with heinous crimes which kills their value. Decades later, removed from the news of the times, the value of such items often grows.

“I’m not sure a lot of people would be comfortable offering it,” said Joshua Mann of B&B Rare Books in Manhattan.

The limited potential market for the black book appears to contradict an insatiable demand for celebrity collectibles, one in which even Elvis Presley’s soiled undies can net $8,000.

Maxwell was convicted Wednesday on five of six charges, including sex-trafficking of minors, which carries a maximum sentence of 40 years.

The chief justice of the Supreme Court in his year-end report called on federal judges to work hard to adhere to ethics rules after over 100 were caught violating a rule that requires judges recuse in any matter in which they have a personal financial interest.

Chief Justice John Roberts cited (pdf) a Wall Street Journal investigation that uncovered violations by 131 federal judges across 685 cases between 2010 and 2018.

The George W. Bush nominee portrayed the number of violations as small, noting that they represented less than three-hundredths of one percent of the 2.5 million civil cases filed in the district courts in years studied.

“Let me be crystal clear: the Judiciary takes this matter seriously. We expect judges to adhere to the highest standards, and those judges violated an ethics rule. But I do want to put these lapses in context,” he said.

The wording drew a response by James Grimaldi, one of the Journal investigators, who said his team investigated tens of thousands of cases, not 2.5 million.

“The Jour­nal’s ini­tial tally was an undercount; it was impossible because of the peculiarities of the judiciary’s financial-disclosure process and incomplete information available on case litigants,” Grimaldi wrote on Twitter, adding that Roberts’ comment “is technically accurate, the suggestion that we could review millions of cases is misleading.”

The W.H.O. holds elections every five years and requested member states nominate potential directors-general by September 23, 2021.

“Proposals will be considered at EB150 in January 2022: following an initial screening the Board will interview the proposed candidates and decide by a secret ballot on the nomination,” the W.H.O. site details. “The nomination will then be submitted to the Seventy-fifth World Health Assembly in May 2022 which will appoint the next Director-General by secret ballot.”

Tedros defeated four other candidates to take over the role in 2017, earning a five-year term with the support of the Chinese Communist Party.

At the time, the W.H.O. was facing global condemnation for its poor management of the West African Ebola outbreak under Tedros’ predecessor Margaret Chan, now a dean at Tsinghua University, dictator Xi Jinping’s alma mater. The W.H.O. catastrophically failed to contain the Ebola outbreak despite the fact that the disease is not airborne and requires contact with the blood of an infected person to catch. The outbreak, the largest ever of that virus, lasted from 2014 to 2016 and killed over 11,000 people in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone primarily, though seven other countries – including America, the U.K., and Spain – documented cases.

Bill Gates, George Soros and Nike's Founder Made the Three Largest Donations of 2021

It was a healthy year for big gifts to charitable causes in 2021, a year that saw one of the largest multibillion-dollar contributions in more than a decade, according to a Chronicle of Philanthropy tally.

The power philanthropists Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates announced in May that they were divorcing and then gave a jaw-dropping $15 billion to their foundation in July. The money will bolster its endowment and support the grant maker’s work in global health, development, policy and advocacy and U.S. education well into the future.

The gift increased the grant maker’s endowment to about $65 billion and is the Gateses’ biggest infusion of money into the foundation since 2000, when they transferred Microsoft stock then valued at $20 million.

When they announced this year’s gift, the two philanthropists indicated they planned to continue running the foundation together for the time being but announced through the foundation that if after two years either one of them decides not to work together, then French Gates will resign as co-chair and trustee.

Regardless, the philanthropists made clear in two new Giving Pledge letters that they both intend to keep giving big in the years ahead.

French Gates wrote that she will continue to support efforts to fight poverty and “advance equality for women and girls and other marginalized groups.” Gates wrote in his Giving Pledge letter that the work of the foundation will continue to be his “top philanthropic priority” and that he plans to increase his giving in other areas like “mitigating climate change and tackling Alzheimer’s.”

Nonprofits that focus on those causes are likely to reap big rewards, given that Bill Gates’s net worth is pegged at about $137 billion and Melinda French Gates’s at $6 billion.

Meanwhile, a $500 million contribution by Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny to the University of Oregon tied for second place on the list. The gift will be used to expand the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact and follows a $500 million donation the Knights gave to launch the science campus in 2016. The Knight Campus aims to speed up the process of transforming new scientific discoveries into medical treatments and other developments to improve people’s lives.

Phil Knight, whose net worth stands at about $60 billion, earned a bachelor’s degree in business from the university in 1959. The couple have given the university a total of at least $1.6 billion to date.

Medical technology acceleration fund Sofinnova MD Start III, a project of European venture capital firm Sofinnova Partners, will invest $5 million in Israeli medical technology company Endoron Medical in a seed round to speed up the development of Endoron's technology for repairing abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), according to a statement from the fund on Wednesday.

Endoron was founded in 2019 by former CEO of Bandit Technologies Ronit Harpaz, vascular surgeon Prof. Ron Karmeli of Hadassah University Hospital and veteran mechanical engineer Eyal Teichman. The company's EndoStapling catheter-based technology for repairing AAAs builds upon a previous invention of Karmeli.

The technology aims to improve minimally-invasive surgery in lieu of risky open surgery for the potentially life-threatening condition, which is still widely employed to treat AAAs.

Endoron's solution is used to hold in place endografts - surgical grafts used in repairing such swelling of the aorta, the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the abdomen, pelvis, and legs - to provide a better seal, as well as to staple and repair grafts that have moved or developed leaks.

The $5m investment is Sofinnova MD Start's first in an Israeli company. Describing itself as "the only MedTech accelerator in Europe," Sofinnova is bringing experienced medical technology entrepreneurs in an effort to accelerate the development of Endoron's novel technology.

Harpaz praised Sofinnova's acceleration fund support and expertise, saying: "The Sofinnova MD Start team are the go-to investors in the medtech domain and are also seasoned medtech entrepreneurs who bring a wealth of operational experience working in high-growth companies like ours. With their support, I am confident we will quickly reach key clinical and regulatory inflection points as we work to bring our EndoStapling technology to the clinic."

Turkish Military Base In Northern Iraq Hit By Second Rocket Attack In A Week

Late on December 31, a rocket attack targeted a Turkish military base near the town of Zaylkan in Bashiqa district in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.

According to local reports, the Turkish military base was struck by four Grad 122 mm rockets. No casualties or material losses have been reported so far. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has not commented on the attack, yet.

This was not the first attack on Zaylkan base. It was recently targeted on December 27, on November 19, on November 7.

The rocket attack may have been carried out by Iranian-backed forces who are frustrated with Turkey’s military presence and activities in the northern region.

However, the main suspects are fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The attack is likely a response to Turkey’s ongoing military operations in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

The military base is located 20 kilometers to the northeast of Mosul city and more than 60 km to the northwest of Erbil city, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

The base was established by Turkish military back in 2015-2016, when Mosul was under control of ISIS militants. In 2016, Turkey deployed about 500 troops to the Bashiqa camp without an authorization from the Iraqi government, arguing that the move is aimed to prevent potential attacks by ISIS and the PKK militant groups. With the new escalation of Turkey’s fight against the PKK in Syria and northern Iraq, its military presence in the disputed Nineveh province is supposed to have significantly grown, despite multiple calls from Baghdad to withdraw from the area.

In April, the Turkish military and security forces launched Claw-Lightning and Thunderbolt operations to neutralize the remnants of the PKK in Metina, Zap and Avashin Basyan regions of Kurdistan. Ankara claimed that more than 500 fighters of the PKK have been killed, wounded or captured since the beginning of the operations.

Millions of Americans watched the events in Washington last Jan. 6 unfold on live television. Police officers testified to the violence and mayhem. Criminal proceedings in open court detailed what happened.

Yet the hoaxes, conspiracy theories and attempts to rewrite history persist, muddying the public's understanding of what actually occurred during the most sustained attack on the seat of American democracy since the War of 1812.

By excusing former President Donald Trump of responsibility, minimizing the mob’s violence and casting the rioters as martyrs, falsehoods about the insurrection aim to deflect blame for Jan. 6 while sustaining Trump's unfounded claims about the free and fair election in 2020 that he lost.

Spread by politicians, broadcast by cable news pundits and amplified by social media, the falsehoods are a stark reminder of how many Americans may no longer trust their own institutions or their own eyes.

Several different conspiracy theories have emerged in the year since the insurrection, according to an analysis of online content by media intelligence firm Zignal Labs on behalf of The Associated Press. Unfounded claims that the rioters were members of antifa went viral first, only to be overtaken by a baseless claim blaming FBI operatives. Other theories say the rioters were peaceful and were framed for crimes that never happened.

Conspiracy theories have long lurked in the background of American history, said Dustin Carnahan, a Michigan State University professor who studies political misinformation. But they can become dangerous when they lead people to distrust democracy or to excuse or embrace violence.

“If we’re no longer operating from the same foundation of facts, then it’s going to be a lot harder to have conversations as a country,” Carnahan said. “It will fuel more divisions in our country, and I think that ultimately is the legacy of the misinformation we're seeing right now."

An examination of some of the top falsehoods about the Capitol riot and the people who have spread them:

CLAIM: THE RIOTERS WEREN'T TRUMP SUPPORTERS

In fact, many of those who came to the Capitol on Jan. 6 have said — proudly, publicly, repeatedly — that they did so to help the then-president.

Different versions of the claim suggest they were FBI operatives or members of the anti-fascist movement antifa.

“Earlier today, the Capitol was under siege by people who can only be described as antithetical to the MAGA movement,” Laura Ingraham said on her Fox News show the night of Jan. 6, referring to Trump's “Make America Great Again” slogan. “They were likely not all Trump supporters, and there are some reports that antifa sympathizers may have been sprinkled throughout the crowd.”

The next day, Ingraham acknowledged the inaccuracy when she tweeted a link to a story debunking the claim.

The First Digital Bank (FDB), the first Israeli digital bank venture to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) has secured investments in the sum of $120 million from investment companies worldwide, FDB announced on Tuesday.

Established by Israeli businessman and founder and CEO of Mobileye Prof. Amnon Shashua, FDB received investments worth up to $120 million from investors such as Swiss management group Julius Baer, Japanese financial conglomerate SBI and Chinese-based tech company Tencent.

In addition, investments were also received from US private equity firm West Coast Equity Partners, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Provident Fund and the venture capital arm of Singapore's Far East Organization, Far East Ventures.

NC voter ID trial delayed as US Supreme Court examines case

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A federal trial set for January on litigation challenging North Carolina's voter photo identification law has been delayed.

That's to give time to the U.S. Supreme Court to decide whether legislative leaders should be permitted to help defend the law in court.

The justices said last month it would consider that request from House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger.

The presiding judge in a lawsuit filed by civil rights groups wrote Thursday that it made sense to delay the Jan. 24 trial start to avoid further confusion over voter ID.

Two other lawsuits related to the 2018 voter ID mandate are pending.
