Utah’s Republican Governor Vows To Veto School Voucher Bill After Taking $75,000 From Nation’s Largest Teachers Union
Utah’s Republican Gov. Spencer Cox vowed to veto a school choice bill on Thursday as school choice advocates point out that the Governor accepted $75,000 in campaign funds from the nation’s largest teachers union.
Cox said during his monthly news conference that he would veto House Bill 331, which would create an educational voucher program that establishes “scholarship accounts on behalf of eligible students to pay for private education goods and services” for the 2023-2024 school year, according to a local news outlet.
“Yeah. Yeah, I would,” Cox said on vetoing the bill. “At some point, I will be absolutely willing to support vouchers, but that point is not now because we are underfunding our schools.”
Cox’s office directed the Daily Caller to his radio show for further comments on his decision to veto the bill. The Governor said that he will support funding a voucher program when the starting salaries for teachers hits $60,000.
School choice advocates pointed out that the nation’s largest teachers union, the National Education Association (NEA), donated $75,000 to Cox’s 2020 campaign. The Utah Education Association (UEA), an affiliate of the NEA, also endorsed the Republican Governor.
The UEA is vehemently opposed to House Bill 331, according to its website. The union’s Government Relations Director said that the bill requires “exactly zero reporting about student learning outcomes” and condemned the program for allegedly paying “twice as much state funding to students attending a private school.”
Funding for government-run public schools goes up under House Bill 331.
“Educators have been crystal clear that what they need most are time, resources, and respect and HB 331 delivers absolutely none of these things. None,” said UEA President Heidi Matthews.

Key Freedom Convoy leaders arrested as police establish 100 checkpoints in Ottawa to clamp down on trucker protest
Key leaders of the Freedom Convoy were arrested on Thursday by police in Ottawa. Tamara Lich and Chris Barber – prominent organizers of the Canadian trucker protest – were seen being taken into custody by police.
According to the Ottawa Police, Barber was charged with counseling to commit the offense of mischief, counseling to commit the offense of disobey court order (s. 127), and counseling to commit the offense of obstruct police. Lich has been charged with counseling to commit the offense of mischief.
Barber – one of the leaders of the Freedom Convoy and a truck driver from Saskatchewan – was seen on video being arrested in Ottawa.
On Tuesday, Barber said, "We'll follow any direction of law enforcement. We've said it right from day one: If you're confronted by a police officer and the handcuffs come out, put your hands behind your back. Take it like a man. I've never been arrested by police. I've never had handcuffs on … If that comes, I'll be the first guy to get arrested."
An emotional Lich shared a video on Wednesday night, where she acknowledged that she would be taken to jail, but said she was "okay with that."
"I want you to know that I'm not afraid," Lich said in the video posted to social media.
"Just please stay peaceful and take care of each other," Lich tells the other Freedom Convoy protesters. "And know this too will pass."
"And there will be a tomorrow, and we will get through this," Lich said. "The only way this is going to succeed is if we always come from a place of love."
"I pray and I hope that you make your choices from love," she continued. "You have to know that they're trying to provoke us."
Lich – who launched the GoFundMe campaign that raised over $10 million for the Freedom Convoy before the crowdfunding website shut it down – also claimed that her personal bank account had been frozen.
The head of the Freedom Convoy, @Tamara_MVC, is preparing to be arrested. "I think it is inevitable. I want you to know that I am not afraid. Stay peaceful, and please take care of each other."

Navy charges 5 sailors for leaking F-35 jet crash video
Five U.S. Navy sailors, including four chiefs and an ensign, are being charged for allegedly leaking government footage of the F-35C Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter crash aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in the South China Sea last month.
Cmdr. Zach Harrell a spokesperson for Naval Air Forces told USNI News on Thursday that the four senior enlisted members and the junior officer were being charged with violating Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Harrell did not identify the five sailors charged.
Article 92 violations can describe a failure to obey lawful general orders and regulations, failure to obey other orders or dereliction of duty.
Rob “Butch” Bracknell, a Marine veteran and military lawyer, told USNI News that the sailors “are either being charged on a general orders violation theory or as a dereliction – as in they negligently failed to execute a duty not to record and leak onboard footage.”
“There are two reasons to charge this conduct,” Bracknell added. “Leaking footage of a mishap might reveal platform or performance vulnerabilities to an adversary – maybe not in this case – but they want to deter the conduct in other cases and they want to deter sailors recording onboard systems with personal cell phones and broadcasting them.”
The F-35 clipped the flight deck of the aircraft carrier as it was coming in for a landing on Jan. 24, while the ship was sailing through the South China Sea. The incident resulted in injuries to seven sailors and the loss of the aircraft after it fell into the ocean. Within days, footage leaked of the crash. The footage appeared to have been taken from a cell phone or other hand-held device facing a computer screen as it played the crash footage.
Videos taken showed the advanced fighter jet hit the deck before its landing gear broke and it skidded on its nose at high speed, trailing flames.
The Navy previously prosecuted a sailor for taking cell-phone video from inside a warship. Kristian Saucier was charged for taking photos inside classified engineering areas of USS Alexandria (SSN-757), a nuclear-powered Los Angeles-class attack submarine. Saucier was sentenced in 2016 to a year in prison for the photos.
Bracknell told USNI News, “Saucier’s photos were of classified spaces, but I can see the Navy resetting the scale on taking photos of the insides of Navy platforms generally.”
The Navy is continuing to investigate the cause of the Jan. 24 crash.
The Navy is also working to recover the wreckage of the advanced stealth-fighter. The loss of the fighter in the South China Sea raises the potential that China, which has already tried to exert broad territorial claims in the sea region, will try to get its hands on the wreckage before the U.S. can. If China recovered the aircraft, they could use it to find both physical and cybersecurity vulnerabilities to exploit.

People have been warned not to travel unless it's urgent, with Storm Eunice forecast to hit the UK with gusts of almost 100mph.
Two red weather warnings have been issued as Storm Eunice hits the UK, with gusts expected to reach 100mph.
The warnings cover the west of England and southern Wales, as well as the east of England including London.
It comes as parts of the country are still recovering from power cuts caused by Storm Dudley.
Below is a list of some of the things that will be affected by the weather today:
Transport
-Britain's rail industry has issued a blanket "do not travel" warning to passengers, while National Rail has confirmed that TfL Rail has suspended all services
-At least 65 flights arriving and departing Heathrow Airport have been cancelled and a further 114 delayed by more than 15 minutes, according to aviation data provider FlightStats by Cirium. There were 17 -planned cancellations and two live cancellations at Gatwick, with 67 delayed flights
-EasyJet has cancelled a "small number of flights" from UK airports due to strong winds
-National Highways has published a list of roads that should not be used by high-sided or vulnerable vehicles. You can see those here
-Network Rail said a fallen tree around 50ft (15m) long at Ewell West, Surrey, is blocking the line between London Waterloo and Dorking, Surrey. It is affecting South Western Railway services
-All trains in Wales have been cancelled. The disruption is likely to continue into the weekend, with more than 1,000 miles of track to be checked and cleared of debris
-There are no blanket cancellations on flights in the UK, but Gatwick, Heathrow, Birmingham, and East Midlands Airport asked passengers to check their flight status with their airline

Many schools across England are already closed due to the half term holidays.

-Bristol City Council announced that all schools are closed

-The only primary school on the Isles of Scilly is closed, after the Five Islands Academy was advised to shut down by the police
-Dozens of schools in Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham are shut and schools in Anglesey, North Wales have also remained closed

Forty-six Senate Republicans demanded Wednesday that Attorney General Merrick Garland respect the independence of Special Counsel John Durham's investigation into the FBI’s Russia probe of the Trump campaign in the 2016 election.
The senators led by Rick Scott of Florida wrote a letter to Garland one week after Durham filed a motion linking Hillary Clinton campaign attorney Michael Sussman and other campaign lawyers to a technology company hired to "mine" Trump data servers "for the purpose of gathering derogatory information about Donald Trump."
"We write to seek your assurance that you will continue to respect the prosecutorial independence of Special Counsel John Durham and his staff, while also ensuring he is provided all resources necessary to fully, thoroughly, and completely pursue the investigation for which he was appointed," the senators wrote Garland.
The only Republican senators to not sign the letter were Sens. Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Mitt Romney and Bill Cassidy.
The 46 other senators said Durhams' findings include "highly concerning, and potentially criminal, manipulation and exploitation of federal law enforcement resources to target American citizens, including a presidential candidate, based upon fabricated evidence that had been procured and disseminated by individuals closely connected with a rival political campaign."
The senators asked Garland to support Durham's "important work until all those responsible for the fraud committed upon the American people are brought to justice."
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denied the accusations against her campaign on Twitter Wednesday and blamed former President Donald Trump.
"Trump & Fox are desperately spinning up a fake scandal to distract from his real ones," she said.

Judicial Watch announced today that it filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) seeking records of meetings and phone conversations between any CIA personnel and former Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann, who has been charged in Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation with making a false statement to a federal agent (Judicial Watch v. Central Intelligence Agency (No. 1:22-cv-00412))
Judicial Watch filed the lawsuit after the CIA failed to reply to an October 26, 2021, FOIA request for:
All records regarding any meetings or telephonic conversations between any official or employee of the Central Intelligence Agency and Mr. Michael Sussmann (formerly an attorney with Perkins Coie) between January 1, 2015 and the present. This request includes, but is not limited to, all notes, transcripts, summaries, or other records created in preparation for, during, or pursuant to the meetings or conversations.
On February 11, Durham, who is investigating the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation, filed a motion, which focused on potential conflicts of interest related to the representation of Sussmann, who has been charged with making a false statement to a federal agent. Sussmann has pleaded not guilty.
According to a February 15, 2022, Fox News report, a spokesperson for the individual labeled in Durham’s latest filing as “Tech Executive-1” has seemingly identified the CIA as the “second” federal government agency to which Sussmann provided an “updated set of allegations” to “establish ‘an inference’ and ‘narrative’ ” tying Donald Trump to Russia.
Durham writes in the latest filing:
[O]n February 9, 2017, [Sussman] provided an updated set of allegations – including the [Alfa Bank] data and additional allegations relating to Trump – to a second agency of the U.S. government (“Agency-2”). The Government’s evidence at trial will establish that these additional allegations relied, in part, on the purported DNS traffic that Tech Executive-1 and others had assembled pertaining to Trump Tower, Donald Trump’s New York City apartment building, the EOP, and the aforementioned healthcare provider. In his meeting with Agency-2, the defendant provided data which he claimed reflected purportedly suspicious DNS lookups by these entities of internet protocol (“IP”) addresses affiliated with a Russian mobile phone provider (“Russian Phone Provider-1”). The defendant further claimed that these lookups demonstrated that Trump and/or his associates were using supposedly rare, Russian-made wireless phones in the vicinity of the White House and other locations. The Special Counsel’s Office has identified no support for these allegations.
“The CIA is in cover-up mode about its communications with the lawyer implicated in a shady spy operation against President Trump,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “What is the CIA hiding about its role in this plot against President Trump?”

Devon Archer, convicted of two fraud felonies, also takes veiled swiped at Biden family for subjecting him to "vitriolic media coverage."
Hunter Biden's longtime business partner is making an unorthodox bid to avoid prison time for fleecing an Indian tribe, portraying himself to the sentencing judge as a victim of the Biden family's "vitriolic media coverage" while using the presidential son's Chinese business partner to make a case for leniency.
Devon Archer has avoided sentencing for nearly four years after being convicted in summer 2018 of two counts of felony securities fraud for a bond scheme that fleeced an indigent Indian tribe of millions of dollars, appealing all the way to the Supreme Court in a failed effort to overturn his conviction.
During the delay, the court authorized Archer to make 40 globe-trotting trips for business and pleasure.
But now down to his final plea — his sentencing recommendation memo — Archer told U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams this week he should be spared prison time because he was the victim of his business partners, like fellow convict Jason Galanis, and "vitriolic media coverage" because of his association with the Biden family.
"No matter how this case ultimately turns out, Mr. Archer has already suffered a great deal," defense lawyers wrote in the memo. "He has lived with the crushing burden that his involvement, albeit unknowing, in Jason Galanis's fraud caused harm to so many people — not only the direct victims of the crime, but also for example the numerous Burnham employees who lost their jobs as a result."
The memo took a veiled swipe at the Biden family, avoiding the name and referring to them instead as "people of prominence" involved in "presidential politics."
Archer "has lived with the impact on his family, including his three young children who have been traumatized by their father's prosecution and conviction, which have become matters of national headlines and presidential politics by virtue of Mr. Archer's association with people of prominence," the memo noted. "And, relatedly, Mr. Archer has watched the reputation and career he built over decades fall apart around him as he has faced a near constant onslaught of vitriolic media attention."
All that trauma, the defense lawyers wrote, merits "that a non-custodial sentence will serve as sufficient punishment."

Developing Story. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cancelled parliamentary debate today as federal police begin arresting protesting truckers and confiscating vehicles. Trudeau did not want to face government while the operation to break the back of the freedom protestors begins.
Early this morning federal police assembled a convoy of heavy tow trucks to begin the operation. The identities of the Tow Truck companies were masked by painting over the logos to avoid retaliation. RCMP and Ottawa police then brought in Armored Personnel Carriers (MRAP’s and APC’s) to support the operation.
Media were told to leave the enforcement zone to help hide the optics of heavily armed RCMP tactical units began breaking the windows of the trucks and forcibly removing the truck drivers. For the same reason popular social media YouTuber’s, who had been broadcasting livestreams, were arrested as the operation began.
The police are slowly moving down the road arresting people, removing the truckers and then the tow operations begin.
Canadian state media have been embedded with the Jackboots in order to show an officially approved video presentation to Canadian citizens. The media are being directed and choreographed from the executive suites of Trudeau and the corporations. There are a few citizen livestreams below:
CANADA – Police are clashing with protesters and making several arrests as officers move along Rideau Street toward Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa as part of the operation to end the three-week occupation. Ottawa police were seen moving along Rideau just before noon ET, arresting several protesters and towing vehicles.
Police in high-visibility yellow jackets moved in large groups, several ranks deep, along Rideau blocking the road and slowly moving protesters toward the National War Memorial and Parliament Hill.
Behind those ranks of officers were tactical teams wearing green camouflage-type gear and carrying heavy automatic weapons. Police horses with mounted officers also moved toward the line of protesters confronting police officers.
The movement of police was slow and deliberate, inching along the road and slowing driving protesters into an increasingly smaller footprint.
Despite the heightened tensions, police said they continued to engage in conversations with protesters and regularly provided warnings, through social media and other means, indicating anyone in the “red zone” would be arrested if they didn’t leave. (read more)

Ottawa police and other law enforcement are taking action against protesters that continue to demonstrate around Parliament Hill, with the House of Commons having cancelled their Friday sitting due to the planned police operation.
It comes a day after at least two of the top organizers for the so-called "Freedom Convoy" blockades were arrested, in addition to other people being taken into custody.
On Thursday Steve Bell, interim chief of the Ottawa police, warned of enforcement against protesters camped outside Parliament Hill and along downtown streets is "imminent."
Bell told a news conference that police from different parts of Ontario and Quebec have joined Ottawa officers and they are absolutely committed to ending this unlawful demonstration.

LISBON, Portugal — A burning car transport ship is drifting near the mid-Atlantic Azores Islands after the huge vessel’s 22 crew members were evacuated due to the blaze.
The Portuguese navy says ships in the area have been warned that the 650-foot-long Felicity Ace is adrift. The ship can carry more than 17,000 metric tons of cargo.
The vehicle transporter was on a transatlantic voyage from Germany to the United States. It was scheduled to arrive in Davisville, R.I., on Wednesday, according to NPR.
Typically, car transport ships carry thousands of vehicles on multiple decks in their hold. The Drive estimates that the Felicity Ace is carrying nearly 4,000 cars, including 1,100 Porsches and nearly 200 Bentleys.

A high-level Facebook staffer was allegedly caught soliciting a minor for sex during an amateur undercover sting operation in Columbus, Ohio.
A high-level Facebook staffer was allegedly caught soliciting a minor for sex during an amateur undercover sting operation in Columbus, Ohio. The video of the encounter was posted to the YouTube channel "Predator Catchers Indianapolis" on February 16.
Jeren Andrew Miles, 35, of Palm Springs California, allegedly sent sexually explicit texts to a 13-year-old boy and made plans for the boy to meet him at Le Meridien Columbus hotel.
Miles was the Manager of Community Development at Meta/Facebook until a spokesperson from the company confirmed to the The Daily Caller that Miles is "no longer with the company."
According to the video, the anti-pedophile activist group busted Miles at the hotel where he then agreed to give an interview.
During the interview, Miles admitted that he sent sexually explicit messages to a person he believed to be a 13-year-old boy, according to the video.
"I was flirting, I was talking to him," Miles admitted. "There was never any intention of meeting up with him."
However, he later admitted that he arranged for them to meet after giving the underaged boy "information" and a "location."
Miles serves on the board of directors for LGBTQ+ group, Equality California. He has since deleted his social media accounts on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Miles previously worked as the Director of Community Affairs for Lyft, according to an archive on LinkedIn, according to The Post Millennial's Andy Ngo's website.
