SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom’s medical mask deal with a Chinese manufacturer will proceed after the company succeeded in obtaining federal safety certification, following two missed deadlines.

Newsom said Monday that supplier BYD had secured safety certification for its N95 particulate-filtering respirators, clearing the way for California to receive 150 million masks. A spokeswoman for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health confirmed that the certification was granted Sunday.

“This new supply of N95 masks, as well as the surgical masks this contract has already provided, are game-changing and play a crucial role in our state’s public safety and reopening strategy,” Newsom said in a statement.

Newsom’s office said the N95 masks, part of a $990 million deal, will be distributed to medical workers and others on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

The governor announced the BYD deal on “The Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC in the early days of the pandemic, describing it as a major victory for the state at a time when personal protective equipment was in short supply. California was originally supposed to begin receiving the masks in early May.

But the contract with BYD, or Build Your Dreams, was thrown into disarray when federal officials denied the company’s application for safety certification.

BYD missed two deadlines to obtain certification, forcing it to refund nearly $250 million to the state. California extended the deadline twice, including last week after BYD missed a May 31 deadline.

A BYD spokesman earlier attributed the N95 certification problems to a “documentation control” issue. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has said it tested the company’s masks and sent a team to its factories in China.

BYD has also sent more than 110 million lower-grade surgical masks to California as part of the deal. The federal government does not need to certify those masks, and they have already been distributed across the state.

Newsom’s office said the surgical masks have been sent to workers in hospitals, agriculture, schools, hotels and retail shops, among other industries.

BYD mainly manufactured electric buses until the coronavirus pandemic struck. It then branched into personal protective equipment for medical workers.

Very interesting. Analysis of waste water in Italy has shown Coronavirus was present in the country as early as December 2019. Their first reported case was on Jan 31.

It's not the first piece of evidence we've seen showing this.

One of Russia’s more colorful regional heads, Mikhail Ignatyev, has died after being diagnosed with Covid-19. The former top official in Chuvashia was fired from his job earlier this year following a host of embarrassing scandals.

In January, Ignatyev was heavily criticized after calling for critical journalists to be “wiped out.” His next gaffe came later that month, when he was filmed humiliating a local firefighter. During a presentation ceremony for new fire trucks, Ignatyev held a set of keys over the head of a fireman, making the emergency services worker jump in the air to collect them. He was removed from his post just days later.

Last month, he started proceedings to sue President Vladimir Putin for alleged unlawful dismissal. Ignatyev, who passed away aged 58 on Thursday, had been in a St. Petersburg hospital suffering from coronavirus. He died of heart failure following a “massive heart attack,” complicated by bilateral pneumonia.

Italian scientists say sewage water from two cities contained coronavirus traces in December, long before the country's first confirmed cases.

The National Institute of Health (ISS) said water from Milan and Turin showed genetic virus traces on 18 December.

It adds to evidence from other countries that the virus may have been circulating much earlier than thought.

Chinese officials confirmed the first cases at the end of December. Italy's first case was in mid-February.

In May French scientists said tests on samples showed a patient treated for suspected pneumonia near Paris on 27 December actually had the coronavirus.

Another US Warship Reportedly Enters Black Sea “to Reinforce Regional Security”

On Wednesday, Russia's National Defence Control Centre said the nation's military is keeping a watchful eye on a mission by a US Navy destroyer that earlier arrived in the Black Sea.

The dock landing ship USS Oak Hill has entered the Black Sea, joining another American warship there, the Ukrainian media reported on Friday.

The report comes a day after the US Navy said in a press release that the Oak Hill had kicked off “its northbound transit into the Black Sea […] to conduct maritime security operations and strengthen relationships with regional partners and allies”.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry raised the possibility that a victory by President Trump could provoke a revolution in the United States, claiming that Republicans have a history of denying voting rights to Democratic voters. “If people don't have adequate access to the ballot, I mean that's the stuff on which revolutions are built,” Kerry said during a virtual appearance at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit. “If you begin to deny people the capacity of your democracy to work, even the Founding Fathers wrote in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, we have an inherent right to challenge that. And I'm worried that increasingly, people are disaffected." Kerry implied that such chicanery contributed to his defeat in 2004 and former Vice President Al Gore’s loss in 2000, maintaining that this pattern unfolded recently in Georgia — an apparent reference to Stacey Abrams’s defeat in the state’s 2018 gubernatorial race. That history, as he views it, undermines U.S. claims to Western leadership. “We're not meeting the standard that we ought to be meeting, so I'm deeply concerned about protecting the vote,” he said.

Kerry didn’t mention Republicans explicitly, but he maintained that there was a history of "certain officials of a particular party purposefully [making] it difficult for the other party to vote where they control those matters.” He predicted that Trump would lose handily but warned that Republicans would "pull out every stop" in the closing weeks of the race. And yet, Kerry remains optimistic about the outcome. “I'm going to continue to believe this election will not be close, we'll have a mandate in America,” he said. “And if it is close, we'll just have to deal with whatever the circumstances are at that time. Hopefully, we've laid enough groundwork, the legal barrier, that we will be well prepared."

Trump to renew effort to end legal protections for DACA recipients

President Trump said he would again try to end protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients after the Supreme Court blocked him from ending the program. “We will be submitting enhanced papers shortly in order to properly fulfil [sic] the Supreme Court’s ruling & request of yesterday,” Trump tweeted Friday, blaming Democrats for not making a deal with him to protect the young immigrants who were brought to the United States illegally. Trump did not give specifics about what will be different in his renewed push to end the legal protections that shield the immigrants from deportation.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the Obama-era program should stay in place. The decision did not say Trump lacks the power to disband the program for DACA recipients but rejected the way the administration tried to end it. Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the court's four liberal judges, who agreed the administration's attempt to dismantle the program violated the Administrative Procedure Act. In 2017, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked the Department of Homeland Security to wind down the program over the course of six months on the basis that it "was effectuated by the previous administration through executive action, without proper statutory authority and with no established end-date” after Congress failed to pass legislation that would have protected DACA recipients. Nearly 800,000 young immigrants are protected under the program.

The chief executive of Wirecard resigned on Friday after the search for US$2.1 billion of cash missing from the embattled electronic payments firm hit a dead end in the Philippines.

Markus Braun, who built the German company into one of the hottest investments in Europe, leaves Wirecard facing a looming cash crunch amid allegations of fraud over the missing money.

In a statement, the company said James Freis, a former compliance officer at Germany’s stock exchange, had been appointed as interim CEO.

Wirecard is holding emergency talks with banks to secure a financial lifeline, three people with knowledge of the matter said, after its auditor, EY, refused to sign off on its accounts.

Eric Schmidt, the longtime Google CEO who now runs two Pentagon advisory boards, says current legislative efforts to bar Chinese students from studying in the United States could be “against our own self-interest.”

Schmidt said that far from being a net negative for U.S. national security, these students contribute heavily to it.

“Remember that, in America, the military does not build very much. Not only do you have to have military capability but the contractors also have to get this talent and most of them don’t have it, to be honest,” he said. “One of the things that we looked at was the role of Chinese students in American research. And for those of you who are shocked by this, I’m sorry but I’ll tell you the truth, that many of the top graduate students are foreign-born and typically Chinese. That’s partly because the really, really smart Chinese researchers would prefer to be here. They love America! And they love the freedoms…they want academic freedom.”

In his talk with Defense One, Schmidt noted the Commission’s first-quarter recommendations for helping DoD adopt AI more quickly, and helping the broader government better use AI in national security. Among the key recommendations is helping the government better recruit AI experts, by accelerating the clearance process for such experts.

In the wake of the horrific police killing of George Floyd, activists, corporations, and celebrities leaped to donate to the Black Lives Matter cause. They gave millions to the Black Lives Matter Foundation, only later to realize that the foundation is not affiliated with the anti-police Black Lives Matter movement. While the Black Lives Matter Foundation appears to have reaped a fortune from the mix-up, the man who created the foundation insists that the Black Lives Matter movement co-opted his idea, not the other way around.

“I don’t have anything to do with the Black Lives Matter Global Network. I never met them; never spoke to them. I don’t know them; I have no relationship with them,” Robert Ray Barnes, the founder of the Black Lives Matter Foundation, told BuzzFeed News. “Our whole thing is having unity with the police department.”

The Black Lives Matter Foundation has benefited from the brand confusion as people conflated the two and funneled millions into his charity through GoFundMe PayPal, or employee donation matching platforms. The Black Lives Matter movement calls for the defunding of police, but the foundation wants to bring police and communities closer together.

According to estimates from BuzzFeed News, donors raised at least $4.35 million for the Black Lives Matter Foundation in the first weeks of June. Georgetown University’s a capella group, the Phantoms, raised nearly $1,100 for the foundation, without knowing it had no connection to the movement. Corporations including Apple, Google, and Microsoft raised $4 million for the foundation, and almost delivered the money.

Confusion in Tulsa: Mayor Issues Curfew as Trump Supporters Gather for Upcoming Rally

Confusion descended upon downtown Tulsa on Thursday evening after the mayor issued a curfew for the area surrounding the BOK Center, where Trump supporters have already begun gathering in anticipation of Saturday’s rally. Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum (R) signed an executive order instituting a 10 p.m. curfew for the area around the Bank of Oklahoma (BOK) Center, where the president’s rally is set to take place. “As part of our preparations for President Trump’s Rally this Saturday, we are working on making the area secure for everyone’s safety,” the Tulsa Police Department said in a statement posted to social media late Thursday. “In an effort to start clearing the area, Mayor GT Bynum has signed Executive Order 2020-11 which places a curfew for the area in the map,” the statement continued. The curfew went into effect at 10 p.m. and will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday. “As Mayor, I have received information from the Tulsa Police Department and other law enforcement agencies that shows that individuals from organized groups who have been involved in destructive or violent behavior in other states are planning to travel to the City of Tulsa for purposes of causing unrest in and around the rally,” the order states.

Per the order: 1. People are prohibited from walking, running, loitering, standing or motoring upon any alley, street, highway, public property, sidewalk, or vacant premises within the boundaries indicated above, except for official designated duty in response to the emergency, providing public safety services, or going to or from a place of residence or work. 2. The manufacture, transfer, use, possession or transportation of a Molotov cocktail or any other device, instrument or object designed to explode or produce uncontained combustion is prohibited within the limits of the City of Tulsa. 3. The transporting, possessing or using of gasoline, kerosene, or combustible, flammable, or explosive liquids or materials in a glass or uncapped container of any kind is prohibited within the limits of the City of Tulsa, except in connection with the normal operation of motor vehicles, normal home use or legitimate commercial use.

Breitbart News’s Matt Perdie was on the scene in Tulsa and confirmed that there is, indeed, a curfew but said it is not currently being enforced. “There is a curfew, but it is not being enforced on these guys as long as they are behaving, essentially — as long as they are not causing any trouble,” Perdie said, noting that the situation could change. “There’s going to be a shift change, at which point there could be different action potentially, but right now, it’s just not being enforced,” he added. The Tulsa Police Department, in its official statement, stated that people who refuse to leave the area “may be cited or arrested.” “We understand that many people are unaware that a curfew will be in place and barricades are still in the process of being setup. If we find anyone in violation of the Executive Order this evening, we will request that they leave the area based on the curfew,” the department said. The department also updated the post, claiming that individuals camping in front of the BOK “are being moved”.

Mother Of Atlanta Cop Charged With Murder Fired For "Creating An Uncomfortable Workplace"

The stepmother of an Atlanta police officer who was charged with murder this week was fired from her job.

The company said in a statement that “it is imperative to maintain a safe environment for all employees.”

“Melissa Rolfe’s termination was a direct result of her actions in the workplace and violation of company policy,” Equity added. “While working with Melissa as she transitioned to a leave of absence granted by our organization, we discovered she violated company policy and created an uncomfortable working environment for many of our employees.”

Rolfe “ultimately lost the confidence of her peers, leadership, and many employees who no longer felt comfortable engaging with her,” the company continued. When employees’ views “create a hostile working environment,” they can be fired, it said.

Equity confirmed the firing following a report from Fox News’ Tucker Carlson.

On his show Thursday night, Carlson cited a source and said Rolfe was fired.

“Apparently, she was fired and her only crime was being Officer Rolfe’s stepmother,” he said.

Rolfe was told previously that her job was safe, according to the source.

Equity earlier Thursday released a lengthy statement saying the company is guided by the principle: “Do the right thing, always.”

“Our unwavering commitment to always doing the right thing has led us to sever ties with an employee who has expressed views that do not align with our culture,” it said, adding it doesn’t tolerate “racism, discrimination, or injustices of any kind.”

After testing the man for sobriety for about 40 minutes, an altercation broke out when the man, Rayshard Brooks, resisted arrest.

CHOP Hosts Black-only Event in Park for Juneteenth; White ‘Allies’ Asked for Security, Money

The radical enclave in Seattle known as the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) will apparently feature a Juneteenth celebration on Friday that will be restricted to black people, while white people are being asked to provide security and donations. Fox News reported Friday that the CHOP, formerly known as the “CHAZ” (for Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone), would be entirely closed to white people. However, it appears that the segregation is only taking place in Cal Anderson Park. A Facebook page for the event, called “Juneteenth Blackout at the CHOP,”details the plans for the 12-hour observance: We’re blacking out CHOP…the viral death of black bodies was the catalyst for this current movement and we need to make sure we remain focused. This means both policy and systemic change to our systems and healing space for black people. So that’s exactly what we’re creating. A series of events in which we center black healing and community. What we need from our non-black allies are donations of money and supplies and the willingness to support by quietly protecting sacred space for black healing. We need allies on the outskirts who are willing to be a physical barrier of protection and to peacefully deter potential interruptions. We will be socially distancing. Please wear masks. If you don’t have one, we will have some extra available to make sure we are protecting ourselves.

The schedule for the day includes a “grief ritual” and “community art healing.” There seems to be no formal acknowledgement of the significance of June 19 — namely, that it marks the moment in 1865 after the Civil War when slaves in Texas were informed that they had been liberated more than two years earlier as a result of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. There is also a GoFundMe page, “Black Out at the CHOP,” that appears to be run by the organizers of the Juneteenth event. The Cal Anderson Park also hosts the CHOP’s community garden, which includes a portion set aside for “black and indigenous folks and their plant allies.” It is not clear how much of the 11-acre park will actually be used for the Juneteenth event. The CHAZ/CHOP began as an outgrowth of local Black Lives Matter demonstrations, after riots caused local authorities to order police out of the area.
