First volunteer in UK coronavirus vaccine trial has died

Elisa Granato, the first volunteer who availed herself in Oxford for a jab in the first Europe human trial of a vaccine to protect against the coronavirus pandemic has died. She died two days after the vaccine was administered, authorities have said and added that an investigation into the cause of the death has been initiated. A statement by the researchers said Elisa had complications few hours after taking the vaccine and died while on admission.

Elisa Granato, who is a scientist, was one of the two who received the jab. Four other volunteer are said to be battling complications due to adverse reactions of the vaccine. Officials say the four persons are being monitored against any adverse effects of the vaccine. After taking her shot, Elisa Granato told the BBC: “I’m a scientist, so I wanted to try to support the scientific process wherever I can.”

Researchers who are awaiting for an autopsy to be conducted believe the Elisa had an underlying health condition which was not disclosed to health officials. “The four in critical conditions will be fine and these are expected reactions from the vaccines, hence a trial.” the researchers revealed and added that these observations would help improve on the vaccine before it becomes available for use by the public.

“Exposing sensitive genetic information to outside parties poses personal and operational risks to Service members,” wrote Joseph D. Kernan, the undersecretary of defence for intelligence, and James N. Stewart, the assistant secretary of defence for manpower.

“These [direct-to-consumer] genetic tests are largely unregulated and could expose personal and genetic information, and potentially create unintended security consequences and increased risk to the joint force and mission,” they wrote.

In an internal memo, Pentagon leadership has urged military personnel not to take mail-in DNA tests, warning that they create security risks, are unreliable and could negatively affect service members’ careers.

Cmdr. Sean Robertson, a Pentagon spokesman, confirmed that the memo had been sent.

“We want to ensure all service members are aware of the risks of Direct to Consumer (DTC) genetic testing,” he told The New York Times over email.

Over the past decade, millions of Americans have purchased DNA tests through companies such as 23andMe and Ancestry with the hopes of connecting with relatives, finding out more about their family origins and learning about how their DNA could affect their chances of developing certain health conditions. In recent years, the tests have become popular holiday gifts.

Commander Robertson said that the tests might provide inaccurate results and have negative professional consequences. “The unintentional discovery of markers that may affect readiness could affect a service member’s career, and the information from DTC genetic testing may disclose this information,” he said.

Genetic tests have more serious employment implications for members of the military than the average office worker, said Frederick Bieber, an associate professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School, who served as an Army Reserve officer at the DNA Identification Lab in Rockville, Md.

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act — known as GINA — prohibits discrimination by health insurers and employers based on the information that people carry in their genes. It does not apply to members of the military, however.

Top cyber security team finds no evidence of Trump-Russia chatter on Alfa Bank server

A cyber security report debunks the accusation that the Trump campaign and Vladimir Putin were communicating secretly via Alfa Bank servers

A report released Friday by top cyber-security experts concludes, as did Special Counsel Robert Mueller, that the 2016 Trump presidential campaign did not secretly communicate with the Russian government via a computer server belonging to Russia’s Alfa Bank.

In the report by the cyber consulting firm Ankura, cyber experts determined that the communication from Alfa Bank to servers on the U.S. East Coast were going to a company that runs marketing activities for several global hotel chains, including, for a number of years, the Trump Hotels - not servers owned or operated by the Trump campaign.

Mueller, when asked during a hearing in the summer of 2019 about allegations that Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin were exchanging covert communications via the Alfa Bank server, said, “I believe it’s not true.”

It was one of the deadliest attacks in the park, Africa's oldest and most biologically diverse protected area.

Besides the 12 park rangers, a driver and four other civilians were killed in the attack in Goma, for which no person or group has claimed responsibility, the governor of the Nord Kivu province said in a statement.

"Others were injured, including some who are fighting for their lives," the park management added in another a statement.

It said that civilians were the apparent target of the attack.

The guards were killed "while coming to help a civilian vehicle which had come under fire by the assailants," the statement said.

Virunga is a UNESCO-listed site which is spread over 7,800 square kilometres (3,000 square miles) over the borders of DR Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.

Blue Angels, Thunderbirds to fly over NYC in honor of coronavirus workers

Frontline workers fighting the coronavirus are getting a shout-out from angels up above. The US Navy’s Blue Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds will roar above the New York Metropolitan area on Tuesday in tribute to workers fighting to stem the spread of the deadly COVID-19 bug in, according to news reports. Dubbed “Operation American Strong,” the demonstration will take the world-renowned stunt jet teams on a nationwide tour that will start over the Big Apple and wrap up in Texas, Air Force Magazine reported Sunday.

“We’re excited to fly over cities across American as our way of saying thanks to the healthcare workers, first responders, and all the people who selflessly run into the breach working to keep American strong,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein and Navy Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday said in a joint statement, the magazine reported. “This is also our way of showing that we are all in this together and that America’s spirit will prevail,” the statement said.

The flyovers will kick off over New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania on Tuesday, WOBM Radio reported. The jets will be over the Big Apple and Newark around noon, over Trenton at 1:45 p.m., and over Philadelphia around 2 p.m., the station said. The Pentagon announced the airborne tribute last week, calling it “a sincere thank you” to those on the front line of the pandemic.

The Thunderbirds have already flown at least two tribute flights this month — over Colorado and Las Vegas. The Air Force demonstration squad was formed in 1953, the Thunderbirds website said. The Blue Angels were formed 74 years ago by Navy Adm. Chester Nimitz in the wake of World War II, according to the team’s website.

In all, at least a mind-boggling $21 trillion of Pentagon financial transactions between 1998 and 2015 could not be traced, documented, or explained, concluded Skidmore. To convey the vastness of that sum, $21 trillion is roughly five times more than the entire federal government spends in a year. To be clear, Skidmore, in a report coauthored with Catherine Austin Fitts, a former assistant secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development who complained about similar plugs in HUD financial statements, does not contend that all of this $21 trillion was secret or misused funding. And indeed, the plugs are found on both the positive and the negative sides of the ledger, thus potentially netting each other out. But the Pentagon’s bookkeeping is so obtuse, Skidmore and Fitts added, that it is impossible to trace the actual sources and destinations of the $21 trillion. The disappearance of thousands of records adds further uncertainty. The upshot is that no one can know for sure how much of that $21 trillion was, or was not, being spent legitimately.

Shocking new evidence has emerged that backs up Tara Reade’s claim about being sexually assaulted by then-Senator Joe Biden in 1993 — and ironically, it originally aired on CNN.

Politico quietly updated a story after first claiming that President Donald Trump currently “owes millions to the Bank of China” Friday. The publication posted an article Friday suggesting President Donald Trump currently “owes” millions of dollars to the Bank of China, adding that “the loan is due soon.” Politico was forced to quietly edit its story after it was determined that Trump apparently did not currently owe the Bank of China millions of dollars.

The publication updated the article, but did not admit that it may have bungled the story and did not retract its story. “This article and headline were updated to include comment from the Bank of China and additional reporting,” Politico wrote in its updated article. “After the first version of this article was published, the Bank of China issued a statement Friday evening stating that it sold its debt on the building weeks after the 2012 loan on the property,” Politico’s current article admits. “Vornado Realty Trust owns 70 percent of the building.”

Politico’s headline now reads that Trump “owed” – past tense – money to the Bank of China. It now includes an important note from the Bank of China as well. “‘On November 7, 2012 several financial institutions including the Bank of China participated in a commercial mortgage loan of $950 million to Vornado Realty Trust,’ said Peter Reisman, managing director and chief communications officer of Bank of China U.S.A. ‘Within 22 days, the loan was securitized and sold into the [commercial mortgage-backed securities] market, as is a common practice in the industry. Bank of China has not had any ownership interest in that loan since late November 2012,'” Politico’s article now reads.

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign director of rapid response pushed the article before it was determined to be fake news. Still, Politico did not retract the article. The article still tries to connect Trump’s response to the novel coronavirus. “The Trump campaign has steadily increased its focus on trying to portray Biden as weak on China amid rising voter disapproval of China, the source of the coronavirus pandemic,” according to Politico. Politico stood by the report in a statement to the Daily Caller.
