Gen Flynn mentioned black sky in FBI ambush

In his new book, former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe offers extensive new details of investigators' fateful January 2017 interview with former national security adviser Michael Flynn at the White House a breezy conversation which began, according to McCabe, with all the urgency of a "playdate."

McCabe wrote in “The Threat,” released Tuesday, that "one thing [Flynn] said stands out in my memory" – namely that "when I told him that people were curious" about his conversations with the then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, Flynn replied, "You know what I said, because you guys were probably listening."

Without confirming Flynn's suspicions, McCabe wrote: "I had to wonder, as events played out: If you thought we were listening, why would you lie?" (A Washington Post article published one day before Flynn's White House interview with the agents, citing FBI sources, publicly revealed that the FBI had wiretapped Flynn's calls and cleared him of any criminal conduct.)

According to McCabe, the interview was "very odd" because "it seemed like [Flynn] was telling the truth" to the two agents who interviewed him, including since-fired FBI agent Peter Strzok. Flynn, the interviewing agents told McCabe, "had a very good recollection of events, which he related chronologically and lucidly," did not appear to be "nervous or sweating," and did not look "side to side" all of which would have been "behavioral signs of deception."

McCabe wrote that Flynn seemed "completely normal" even when, on three occasions, Flynn looked at the window and told agents,

"What a beautiful black sky."

McCabe maintained that Flynn made that memorable comment three times first, at "noon," then an hour later, and then one more time shortly after that. However, McCabe's timeline in the book appeared to contradict the sentencing memorandum filed late last year by Flynn's attorneys, citing government documents.

The memorandum, which relied on sealed documents whose authenticity was not challenged by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team, asserted that McCabe had called Flynn to set up the interview at 12:35 p.m. on Jan. 24, 2017, and that agents arrived at the White House at 2:15 p.m. more than two hours after McCabe claimed in the book that Flynn first made the comment to the agents about the "beautiful black sky."

It was unclear if McCabe was suggesting that Flynn made the "big blue sky" comment literally, or whether McCabe instead was using a metaphor. The remark does not appear in quotes in McCabe's book.

Spiritual Center tells TM residents to vacate

Residents of the Parusha community at the Spiritual Center may soon be seeking a new residence.

A rift between the group that helped establish the Transcendental Meditation (TM) movement at Heavenly Mountain and its current practitioners continued to widen last week when the board of directors of the Spiritual Center of America demanded full-time meditation groups leave the center's residential facilities.

After a unanimous decision by its five-member board, center chairman Earl Kaplan said he sent notices "requesting possession of the premises"by July 6 to the men's and women's groups (Parusha and Mother Divine).

The announcement came amid several legal battles against Kaplan and his twin brother, David, who have both been named in lawsuits by Heavenly Mountain homeowners.

Last week, most of the lawsuits were dismissed in civil court, but David still faces one suit by some Heavenly Mountain homeowners, who claim they bought homesites based on a belief that the development would remain TM-centered.

Last month, David Kaplan publicly cut all ties with the TM movement. In a letter, Kaplan said he and his brother investigated the movement's leader, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and the TM movement closely, and subsequently he could "no longer support or be associated with Maharishi, his ideas, his knowledge or any of his organizations in any way whatsoever."

David Kaplan helped start Heavenly Mountain, which is located east of Boone near Triplett in 1993 by investing $8 million of his own money.

He avidly practiced TM for 25 years, often meditating for several hours each day, and donated more than $10 million to the organization.

He began to consider leaving after 1999 when he became so sick he nearly died. Later, he decided to get married and left the Parusha program for single men.

"For that I was kicked out of the movement," he said in an earlier letter. David said he will continue to develop a 5,800-acre parcel of land he owns privately and said he hopes Heavenly Mountain will become a "normal development, not a TM development."

At least one Parusha resident, who asked not to be named, said he knew nothing about the notice to vacate the residential unit and seemed surprised to hear about it.

Representatives of the Parusha and Mother Divine refused to comment on the notice, spokesman Bob Roth said.

The TM movement originally established the Spiritual Center "to bring fulfillment to the spiritual and material aspirations of all Americans through Maharishi Vedic Science and Technology," according to the center's Web site, which has now been disabled.

Earl Kaplan said the center would soon be opened to people of all religious faiths or spiritual beliefs for meditation or worship.

Although it is not known how many men and women live at Parusha and Mother Divine, most spend several hours a day meditating and voluntarily segregate themselves from members of the opposite sex.

The campuses, separated by several miles of mountainous terrain and privacy gates, are surrounded by thousands of acres of undeveloped forest near the Triplett community.

While it is not known where most practitioners will go after July 6, the TM movement operates several communities throughout the world, including a university in Fairfield, Iowa.

Officials claim more than 5 million people practice TM.

Heavenly Mountain consists of two parts: the 500-acre nonprofit Spiritual Center of America and about 1,000 acres of for-profit development of private lots and houses.

What the Vatican and Beijing started as an experiment has turned out to be successful by their own standards.

Officials in Rome and Beijing are now confidently doing their homework for an extension of the 2018 Vatican-China deal on the appointment of bishops. The extension is expected to be signed next month.

Caught in the new bonhomie between the Catholic Church and communist China are the US presidential election and Taiwan, which China claims as its own and vows to use force, if necessary, to annex it.

Since the deal, the Vatican has been noticeably silent on Taiwan, an island lying across the Taiwan Strait. Experts say the Church is working towards one unified Catholic Church in China in line with Beijing’s “one China” policy.

The Donald Trump administration has strengthened engagement with Taiwan before the US presidential election in November.

Seoul (CNN)North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has apologized for the death of a South Korean government worker who was shot dead by North Korean troops after crossing a maritime border between the two countries.

In a letter sent to South Korea's Blue House Friday morning, North Korea said units responded to a call that an unidentified male was found floating on an object in the sea. The letter claims about 10 rounds were fired at the man after he did not comply with a soldier's demand to identify himself and subsequent warning shots.

North Korea says only a pool of blood remained on the floating object after the shots were fired. After soldiers presumed the man to be dead, they burned the floating object on site per North Korea's Covid-19 disease prevention measures.

"Chairman Kim Jong Un asked to convey that he feels very sorry that instead of giving aid to our compatriots in the South who is struggling with Covid epidemic, we have given President Moon and our compatriots in the South a great disappointment with this unseen misfortune in our sea," the letter read, according to the Blue House.

The statement added that North Korea has strengthened its maritime surveillance and apologized for "an incident that will clearly negatively impact inter-Korean relation."

According to Lt. Gen. Ahn Young-ho, a top official with South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, a worker with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries went missing in waters 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) south of the Yeonpyeong Islands on September 21.

MARINE CORPS FIELDS FIRST NEW SERVICE PISTOL IN 35 YEARS

QUANTICO, Va. –

For the first time since former President Ronald Reagan’s Administration, the Marine Corps is fielding a new service-wide pistol replacement.

Marine Corps Systems Command began fielding the M18 Modular Handgun System in September. This striker-fired, semi-automatic, 9-mm pistol is based on the Sig Sauer Model P320. The M18 will replace all other pistols in the Marine Corps inventory, including the M9, M9A1, M45A1 and M007.

“All Marine Corps units with a pistol will receive an M18,” said Brian Nelson, M18 project officer at MCSC.

Formal Marksmanship Training Centers, Reconnaissance Battalions, Provost Marshall Offices and Marine Corps Security Forces will be the first to receive the M18. MCSC projects fielding to conclude by fiscal year 2022.

How M18 differs from M9

The M18 comprises capabilities previous pistols lacked. For example, the M9—the most widely issued pistol among Marines—is a steel-framed, single-action/double-action hammer-fired pistol. This means it is a heavier, metal gun with two different trigger pulls for single- and double-action.

Conversely, the M18 is lighter and does not include two different trigger pulls.

“For some Marines, having two trigger pulls, like with the M9, is difficult to get used to because different forces are acting upon the gun,” said Sgt. Randall McClellan, pistol program manager with the Weapons Training Battalion aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. “With the M18, the trigger is going to be the same weight every time.”

The M18 has increased modularity when compared with previous pistols. The gun includes interchangeable components to fit small, medium or large hands. It comprises a receiver module inside the pistol grip that enables Marines to remove the trigger mechanism and insert it into a new grip size, said Nelson.

Disinformation, QAnon efforts targeting Latino voters ramp up ahead of presidential election

Disinformation targeting Latino communities is ramping up ahead of Election Day, when the demographic is expected to play a crucial role in key battleground states.

Advocacy groups and election security experts alike say material is circulating on social media platforms and online messaging apps that pushes false conspiracies that echo larger disinformation campaigns in English.

The misinformation efforts, some of which reflect the QAnon conspiracy theory, are especially critical in Florida, a crucial swing state where polls show Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is running behind Hillary Clinton’s 2016 support among Latino voters.

Advocates said the misinformation could dissuade Latino voters, who have historically low levels of voter participation, from voting in this year’s election.

One example, according to NALEO, a non-partisan non-profit organization that facilitates Latino participation in American politics, is a Facebook page “Cubanos por el Mundo” that makes false claims that the Cuban government is planning a caravan at the southern border to create a migratory crisis before the election to sabotage President Trump.

A video posted by the Facebook page pushing the claim this week was shared more than 334 times in one day.

Other disinformation efforts have spread across Facebook, Twitter and more recently WhatsApp, the widely popular messaging app among Latino immigrants, with the intent to misinform Latino communities about election security. Much of the disinformation is coming from “one off groups” that are hard to trace and can spread rapidly through forwarded WhatsApp messages,” said Lizette Escobedo, civic engagement director at NALEO.

FBI Investigated Steele Dossier Source As A Possible Russian Spy Years Before Trump Probe

The FBI opened a counterintelligence investigation on the primary source for dossier author Christopher Steele, and considered obtaining a warrant to wiretap him in 2010, according to a document released Thursday. The FBI was also aware of the information about the source, identified elsewhere as Igor Danchenko, by December 2016, according to the document. “This is the most stunning and damning revelation the committee has uncovered,” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham said in a statement after releasing an FBI memo about the dossier source. The document shows that the FBI considered a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant of Danchenko years before the bureau relied heavily on information that he had provided Steele, a former British spy, to obtain FISAs against Carter Page. Danchenko is not named in the memo, though is attorney has confirmed to reporters that the Russian national was Steele’s source. The information also could increase concerns that Russian disinformation was fed to Steele, a former MI6 officer who investigated the Trump campaign on behalf of the Clinton campaign and DNC. A Justice Department inspector general’s report released Dec. 9 said that the FBI received evidence in January and February 2017 that Russian intelligence officers may have fed false information into Steele’s network of sources. Footnotes from the IG report say that two Russian intelligence officers knew in July 2016 that Steele was investigating the Trump campaign.

According to the FBI document, Danchenko had contact with suspected Russian intelligence officers in Washington, D.C. in 2005 and 2006. The document says that the FBI had an investigation into Danchenko open from May 2009 to March 2011, based on an interaction he allegedly had with three employees of an American think tank. Danchenko worked at the time as a Russia analyst for the Brookings Institution, a prominent liberal foreign policy think tank. An employee of the think tank said that another employee, seemingly Danchenko, told others that if they got jobs in the government and obtained classified security clearances, they might be put them in touch with people so they could “make a little extra money.” “The coworker did express suspicion of the employee and had questioned the possibility that the employee might actually be a Russian spy,” the FBI memo says. The FBI opened a full counterintelligence investigation on Danchenko after discovering that he was an associate of two other subjects of FBI counterintelligence probes, the FBI assessment says. FBI databases also showed that Danchenko had contact in September 2006 with a Russian intelligence officer. The memo says that the intelligence officer invited Danchenko to his office at the Russian embassy. There, Danchenko allegedly told the officer that he was interested in entering the Russian diplomatic corps. The intelligence officer contacted Danchenko four days later to work “on the documents and then think about future plans,” the memo says.

The following month, Danchenko contacted the Russian intelligence officer, and mentioned finding out whether “the documents can be placed in tomorrow’s diplomatic mail pouch.” Danchenko also had contact in 2005 with a Russian intelligence officer based in Washington, according to the memo. The FBI interviewed several of Danchenko’s associates, according to the memo. One said that while Danchenko was not anti-American, he often presented pro-Russian viewpoints. Two interview subjects said that Danchenko “persistently” asked them about their knowledge of a U.S. military vessel. The memo says that an FBI field office initiated the process for applying for a FISA on Danchenko in July 2010. The bureau dropped the issue after Danchenko left the country in September 2010. “Because the Primary Sub-source had apparently left the United States, the FBI withdrew the FISA application request and closed the investigation,” the memo says.

Pompeo 'Outs' Chinese Consulate in NYC as Another 'Hotbed for Espionage'

In July, the US closed a Chinese consulate in Houston, Texas, declaring the location an espionage hot spot and a centre for attempting to steal medical data related to the development of a coronavirus vaccine.

US State Secretary Mike Pompeo told The New York Post in a Wednesday interview that a Chinese consulate in New York City is a hub for espionage on US soil, following the arrest of an NYPD officer who was charged with spying for Beijing.

“They’re engaged in activities where they’re crossing the line from normal diplomacy to the kinds of things that would be more akin to what spies are doing,” Pompeo said, referring to the NYC-based Chinese consulate.

The decision to close the consulate came after an NYPD police officer, Baimadajie Angwang, was accused earlier this week of serving as an agent for the Chinese government and helping it find information about New York City's Tibetans - an accusation denied by Beijing as "completely fabricated".

Despite Beijing dismissing the accusations, Pompeo insisted that the NYC consulate is connected to espionage, and warned that more arrests of diplomats and agents are to come.

This is not the first time Chinese consulates in the country have been targeted by the Trump administration, as earlier in July, Houston saw a shutdown of its Chinese consulate on the same allegations, after the FBI accused employees of participating in a hub for stealing medical data on a COVID-19 vaccine and trying to infiltrate oil and gas industries.

“We closed it because they’re engaged in espionage and that is a legal term. It’s not just a spy novel term. It is a very data-driven, analytic, fact-based analysis that says, ‘No, this is espionage, it’s unlawful, and therefore, we’re going to send you back'", Pompeo claimed Wednesday.

As Chinese diplomats have been accused of espionage, with Chinese consulates in San Francisco and New York City labeled as spy hubs, new reports emerged alleging that Beijing's devious "spy network" has taken over the country. According to The Post, citing unnamed DoJ officials, the alleged espionage scheme has found its way into over 25 cities.

“That network is supported through the consulates here. Consulates have been giving individuals in that network guidance on how to evade and obstruct our investigation", The Post quoted the anonymous official, who also noted that the Houston consulate is "merely the tip of the iceberg".

The administrations of US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have not been enjoying warm relations recently, as the White House points a finger at Beijing when it comes to many internal and foreign problems: the coronavirus pandemic, trade, national security and technological development. According to the White House, China is to be blamed for COVID-19 outbreak, threatening the US' national security and attempting to meddle with the US presidential election.

As Trump attacks Chinese diplomats, apps including TikTok, and tech companies such as Huawei, Beijing has denounced White House foreign policy toward China, insisting that the White House is attempting to scapegoat Xi and his government for internal political problems and global challenges, such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The husband of California Sen. Dianne Feinstein has been linked to an audit by the University of California admissions system that found wealthy and connected high school students were given significant preference over more academically qualified students.

The audit, which was released earlier this week, determined that from 2013 to 2019, 64 high school students with connections to major university donors, leaders or other individuals with influence were admitted to four of California's top public universities, beating out peers with superior academic and athletic records.

In one case, which the audit identified as "particularly problematic," a university regent, Feinstein's husband, Richard Blum, sent a letter of support on behalf of a student on the waitlist.

In addition to the student having just a 26% chance of gaining admission based on the submitted application, Blum's effort violates policy on regents sending letters of recommendation on behalf of prospective students.

Blum told the San Francisco Chronicle that "no one" had ever told him the practice of recommendation letters "was wrong."

"My cousin's brother wanted to get into [UC] Davis. They'd send me a letter and tell my why it's a good kid, and I'll send it on to the chancellor. Been doing it forever," said Blum.

The audit also found that 22 students, in the reviewed cases, has been admitted to California's public universities as athletes "even though they possessed little athletic talent."

The investigation comes about a year and a half after the a scandal broke that wealthy parents across the country were bribing college athletic departments and admissions offices to gain spots for their children at elite institutions including the University of Southern California.

Traders should temper their fears that a delayed U.S. election result could upend markets, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

While a delayed outcome is a “tail risk,” a combination of early results, voter turnout, county-level data and the high correlation of polling errors across states suggests investors will have enough information on election night to determine the likely victor, wrote economists Michael Cahill and Alec Phillips in a note Thursday. A number of states including some key battlegrounds allow votes to be processed and counted well before election day, they noted.

“It seems fairly likely that there should be enough information on election night from states that will report results quickly for the market to be able to gauge the likely winner,” the pair wrote. “In other words, the S&P can trade the likely outcome, even if the AP does not call the race.”

With the attention of many investors turning toward November’s elections as a source of risk, the cost of hedging against a contested or delayed result is getting ever more pricey. One measure in the equity market shows the most-expensive event risk on record. Among traders’ biggest fears – an expected record number of mail-in ballots that may not be counted for days.

Goldman says the high level of uncertainty priced into currency options may be due to “muscle memory” of outsized moves in some crosses from the 2016 vote. The uncertain growth outlook amid the Covid-19 pandemic means this election should be less decisive for market direction, they said.

“While we recognize that an especially uncertain election outcome could have a significant negative impact on risk sentiment, we think this outcome is less likely than current market pricing and client conversations seem to imply,” the Goldman team concluded.

HARTFORD — An embattled Republican state senator is now apologizing for his association with QAnon — two weeks after becoming embroiled in controversy over a car windshield decal that represents the conspiracy movement.

Fire Breaks Out At Huawei's 5G Antenna Research Lab

As the seemingly never-ending squabbling over TikTok's deal with Oracle and Walmart drags on, the Trump administration's battle with tech giant Huawei Technologies has seemingly taken a backseat over the last couple of weeks to this newest distraction.

But in a shocking new developing, a Huawei research lab in Dongguan caught fire on Friday, according to Reuters and local Chinese press.

The Chinese state-controlled Global Times confirmed reports of the fire but assured the public that nobody was injured.

"The lab in the city's Songshan Lake area is a steel structure and the main material burning is sound-absorbing cotton," Dongguan city fire-rescue department said in a statement.

The lab is allegedly the site for where the tech giant conducts testing for 4G and 5G antennas related to Huawei's base station business, sources told Reuters.

The Global Times noted the building was under construction at the time of the blaze. Videos from social media show thick black smoke pouring from the research lab.

NBC's Janis Mackey Frayer tweeted a picture of the blaze.

"There are images on Chinese social media of a big fire at Huawei's Dongguan campus near Shenzhen. More to come…," Frayer tweeted.

As for the cause of the fire, right now it's unclear. But we're certainly curious to learn more.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has issued an extremely rare apology over the Thursday killing of a South Korean fisheries official who breached the border in the water off the coast while allegedly trying to defect. He had been shot on site by the north's border patrol in a boat who happened upon the life jacket wearing man, his body also immediately burned on coronavirus fears.

Kim's message was that the north was "very sorry" over the "unexpected, unfortunate incident" which was expressed in a letter to South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

"Chairman Kim Jong Un asked to convey that he feels very sorry that instead of giving aid to our compatriots in the South who is struggling with Covid epidemic, we have given President Moon and our compatriots in the South a great disappointment with this unseen misfortune in our sea," the letter read, according to the Blue House.

However Kim did also take Seoul to task for charging Pyongyang with "atrocious acts" before formally inquiring into the matter to learn what had happened.

It further apologized for "an incident that will clearly negatively impact inter-Korean relation" while noting the north had recently upped the intensity of its maritime patrols along the border.

The letter revealed more details about the shocking killing:

In a letter sent to South Korea's Blue House Friday morning, North Korea said units responded to a call that an unidentified male was found floating on an object in the sea. The letter claims about 10 rounds were fired at the man after he did not comply with a soldier's demand to identify himself and subsequent warning shots.

North Korea says only a pool of blood remained on the floating object after the shots were fired. After soldiers presumed the man to be dead, they burned the floating object on site per North Korea's Covid-19 disease prevention measures.

The south's defense ministry had immediately suspected the 'shoot first' reaction by the soldiers had more to do with North Korea's extreme "shoot to kill" anti-coronavirus measures implemented along all border zones. "We assess it was carried out under the North's anti-coronavirus measure," a military official had told AFP.

Seoul defense sources had also said that "circumstances tell us that there was an intent to defect."

But the surprise apology direct from Kim strongly suggests a new and rare softening out of Pyongyang, which could portend near future major diplomatic openings toward peace.

"Get Trump": FBI Agent From Mueller Team Says Flynn Case Was Politically Motivated "Dead End" - Others Bought Misconduct Insurance

Thanks to Judge Emmet Sullivan refusing the DOJ's request to drop the Michael Flynn case, a cache of explosive documents has now been released to the public revealing that at least one FBI agent on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team thought the case was a politically motivated "dead end," and others bought professional liability insurance as their bosses were continuing the investigation based on "conspiracy theories."

Judge Sullivan and the DC Court of Appeals are turning out to be the unintentional heroes of the Flynn saga. In their unseemly quest to destroy Flynn, they refused to let DOJ drop case, and now we're getting some of the most explosive documents about Special Counsel probe yet.

In one case, FBI agent William J. Barnett said during a Sept. 17 interview that he believed Mueller's prosecution of Flynn was part of an attitude to "get Trump," and that he didn't want to pursue the Trump-Russia collusion investigation because it was "not there" and a "dead end," according to Fox News.

Barnett, during his interview, detailed his work at the FBI, and his assignment to the bureau’s original cases against Flynn and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Barnett said the Flynn investigation was assigned the code name “Crossfire Razor,” which was part of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation — the bureau’s code name for the original Trump-Russia probe.

Barnett told investigators that he thought the FBI’s Trump-Russia probe was “opaque” and “with little detail concerning specific evidence of criminal events.”

“Barnett thought the case theory was ‘supposition on supposition,’” the 302 stated, and added that the “predication” of the Flynn investigation was “not great,” and that it “was not clear” what the “persons opening the case wanted to ‘look for or at.’”

After six weeks of investigating, Barnett said he was “still unsure of the basis of the investigation concerning Russia and the Trump campaign working together, without a specific criminal allegation.” -Fox News

When Barnett approached agents about what they thought the 'end game' was with Flynn - suggesting they interview the former National Security Adviser "and the case be closed unless derogatory information was obtained," he was cautioned not to conduct an interview, as it may tip Flynn off that he was under investigation.

"Barnett still did not see any evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government," the 302 states. "Barnett was willing to follow any instructions being given by the deputy director as long as it was not a violation of the law."

UK’s chief scientific adviser has £600,000 of shares in vaccine maker contracted by govt – reports

UK Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance reportedly holds a bonus of tens of thousands of shares in a pharma giant developing a Covid-19 vaccine for the government. Yet, London says there is no conflict of interest.

Vallance, who also chairs the government’s expert advisory panel on vaccines, appears to have retained over 43,000 shares in GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) – a UK-based multinational pharmaceutical company – worth £600,000, The Telegraph reported.

The shareholding appears to be the legacy of his previous job as the head of research and development at the very same company. Over his tenure from 2012 to 2018, Vallance accumulated a total of 404,201 GSK shares worth a whopping £6.1 million in his hands, according to the British media.

However, he sold more than £5 million worth of shares after being appointed to the government. GSK, meanwhile, has entered the global race to provide the world with a vaccine against coronavirus – alongside some 20 other drug manufacturers and research centers. The endeavor might prove quite lucrative, should the company succeed.

The pharma giant working together with another drug manufacturer – Sanofi – has already struck deals with the UK and the US governments to supply them with a Covid-19 vaccine in case its efforts are fruitful. The contract would see GSK providing as many as 60 million doses to the UK and 100 million doses to the US. Washington already reportedly paid the two companies £1.65 million to accelerate their efforts.

Since it received the government contracts, GSK’s share price rose by some two percent. Vallance has meanwhile been busy ensuring that the UK would get enough vaccine doses if GSK is successful and contributing to the vaccine development efforts.

Wolfe, Director of Strategic Systems Programs, visited Marine Corps Security Force Regiment for a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle capabilities brief and demonstration Sept. 22, 2020 at Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, Virginia.

The demonstration showcased the off-road performance, suspension capabilities and safety advancements of the JLTV. There are four variants of the vehicle and one trailer.

“The JLTV is the vehicle we have identified that would be a good replacement for the tactical vehicles at the security force battalions at Bangor and Kings Bay,” said Col. Corey M. Collier, the commanding officer of MCSFR. “So, we wanted to give Vice Adm. Wolfe the opportunity to see the vehicle for himself and get a chance to ride in it, take a look at the capabilities that the vehicle presents and how advanced it is in comparison to the current fleet of vehicles, so that he can consider it as a possibility for the future vehicle of choice at the [Marine Corps] Security Force Battalions.”

The JLTV is being fielded as a replacement for the High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicles currently in use at MCSFR.

“We had the opportunity to demonstrate the unique capabilities and characteristics of the JLTV,” said 1st Lt. Corrine Caggiano, the motor transportation officer in charge at MCSFR. “With this off-road course we designed, we were able to demonstrate to Vice Adm. Wolfe the central tire inflation system, the five-setting suspension, as well as the vehicle’s unique ability to accelerate to traverse across side-slopes, up to a 60 degree slope.”

The adaptable suspension of the JLTV can be raised and lowered to meet transportability requirements using interior controls. The JLTV has several safety features, including an advanced hull design built to optimize survivability against a full range of blast and ballistic threats, as well as blast protected seats, restraints, and stowage to minimize crew impact during adverse events.

“The JLTV is light-years ahead of the current HMMVW fleet in what it provides to the Marines and Sailors who are utilizing it,” said Collier. “Its capabilities include being able to navigate difficult terrain, being a vehicle that is both road-worthy and also provides a level of protection that the Marines and Sailors need in order to perform the mission.”

A US Air Force B-52 bomber has sent a distress signal after a mid-air emergency over Gloucestershire, it was reported.

According to tracking website FlightRadar 24, the aircraft transmitted a “squawk code 770, indicating general emergency, near Tewkesbury, UK”.

Three of the giant planes were spotted in the skies above the county today, Gloucestershire Live reports.

The planes flew over central Gloucester, towards Hartpury, Ashleworth and Tewkesbury, before coming back round over Up Hatherley, Shurdington, Brockworth Hucclecote and Barnwood.

Two of the aircraft were Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, with the identities BALOO51 and BALOO52. Both were flying at an altitude of over 9,000 feet.

Currently, there are six US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bombers based at RAF Fairford, in the Cotswolds.

President Trump’s plan for Black America designates the KKK and Antifa as terrorist organizations and calls for making lynching a national hate crime, while pledging to increase access to capital in Black communities by nearly $500 billion, Fox News has learned.

The president on Friday is expected to roll out details of what the campaign is calling the “Platinum Plan,” which details “opportunity,” “security,” “prosperity,” and “fairness” for the Black Community.

“For decades, Democrat politicians like Joe Biden have taken Black voters for granted. The president is expected to tout the plan as “a bold vision that we can and will achieve over the next four years.”

The president’s plan, according to the campaign, will increase access to capital in Black communities by almost $500 billion, help to create 500,000 new Black-owned businesses, and help to create 3 million new jobs for the Black community.

Fox News obtained a copy of the "Platinum Plan." It states that it will “prosecute the KKK and ANTIFA as terrorist organizations and make lynching a national hate crime.”

The president’s plan also vows to make Juneteenth a national holiday.

Meanwhile, the president is also expected to commit to working on a “Second Step Act,” and provide access to better jobs and training opportunities for those in Black communities.

The Platinum Plan also pledges to give Black churches the ability to compete for federal resources for their communities; bring better and tailored healthcare to address what the campaign called “historic disparities,” and advance home ownership opportunities and enhance financial literacy in Black communities.

As for educational opportunities, the president is expected to vow, in federal, state and local community partnerships to “close failing schools” to replace with “full school choice and education opportunity,” while continuing to protect Historically Black Colleges & Universities.

“I stand here to offer you solutions,” Trump is expected to say, while adding that “no one in Washington politics today has done more to hurt Black Americans than Joe Biden.”

The president is also expected to vow to increase public safety in Black communities.

“Instead of fighting for public safety for these communities, the Democrats are attacking our police and empowering far-left rioters, looters, and anarchists,” Trump is expected to say. “In the Republican Party, we believe in protecting ALL black lives – including the unborn.”

He is expected to add that Republicans "believe that every child, of every race – born and unborn – is made in the Holy image of God. Republicans believe that all human life is sacred.”

“At no time before has there been a clearer choice between two parties, two visions, two philosophies, and two agendas for the future,” Trump will say.

So who owns the Federal Reserve and are the stockholders in these money center banks? This information is guarded much more closely.

My queries to bank regulatory agencies regarding stock ownership in the top 25 US bank holding companies were given Freedom of Information Act status, before being denied on “national security” grounds.

This is rather ironic, since many of the bank’s stockholders reside in Europe. One important repository for the wealth of the global oligarchy that owns these bank holding companies is US Trust Corporation – founded in 1853 and now owned by Bank of America. A recent US Trust Corporate Director and Honorary Trustee was Walter Rothschild.

Other directors included Daniel Davison of JP Morgan Chase, Richard Tucker of Exxon Mobil, Daniel Roberts of Citigroup and Marshall Schwartz of Morgan Stanley. J. W. McCallister, an oil industry insider with House of Saud connections, wrote in The Grim Reaper that information he acquired from Saudi bankers cited 80% ownership of the New York Federal Reserve Bank– by far the most powerful Fed branch- by just eight families, four of which reside in the US.

He names N.M. Rothschild of London, Rothschild Bank of Berlin, Warburg Bank of Hamburg, Warburg Bank of Amsterdam, Lehman Brothers of New York, Lazard Brothers of Paris, Kuhn Loeb Bank of New York, Israel Moses Seif Bank of Italy, Goldman Sachs of New York and JP Morgan Chase Bank of New York.

Schauf lists William Rockefeller, Paul Warburg, Jacob Schiff and James Stillman as individuals who own large shares of the Fed. The Schiffs are insiders at Kuhn Loeb.

The Stillmans are Citigroup insiders, who married into the Rockefeller clan at the turn of the century. Eustace Mullins came to the same conclusions in his book The Secrets of the Federal Reserve, in which he displays charts connecting the Fed and its member banks to the families of Rothschild, Warburg, Rockefeller and the others.

The control that these banking families exert over the global economy cannot be overstated and is quite intentionally shrouded in secrecy.

Donald Trump Gives Seniors $200 Medicare Cards While Joe Biden Does ‘Debate Prep’

Thanks to Donald Trump's leadership skills, millions of American seniors will soon receive $200 cards in the mail to help them cover the cost of prescription drugs.

The president announced the initiative on Thursday at an event with health professionals in North Carolina. "Under my plan, 33 million Medicare beneficiaries will soon receive a card in the mail containing $200 that they can use to help pay for prescription drugs," Trump told the cheering heroes. "Joe Biden won't be doing this."

Unlike Trump, the former vice president has neither a plan nor the authority to provide financial relief to seniors before the end of the year. Biden, who has been largely absent from the campaign trail of late, recently told reporters he intended to focus "really heavily" on preparing for next week's presidential debate in Cleveland.

It is merely the latest example of the so-called "leadership gap" between President Trump and his Democratic rival. Earlier this month, Trump forged a historic peace agreement between Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. He also helped bring back Big Ten college football, and presided over the celebrated "Cactus Jack" collaboration between McDonald's and hip-hop artist Travis Scott.

Biden, by comparison, was engaged in activities that aren't typically associated with leadership. He committed an embarrassing gaffe by reading aloud the phrase "end of quote" during a teleprompter-assisted speech, spoke incoherently about what it would be like to work "in the second-floor ladies department," and attempted to woo Hispanic voters by playing the 2017 smash hit "Despacito" on his phone. Biden was also attacked by bugs during an "environmental justice" event.

Biden is going to need all the preparation he can get ahead of next week's debate. He has consistently struggled to form coherent sentences on the campaign trail, and has displayed an inability to control his emotions when challenged. His failed attempt to recite the pledge of allegiance, for example, does not bode well. "I pledge allegiance to the United States of America, one nation, indivisible, under God, for real," Biden said during a campaign speech in Wisconsin.

Ireland, which has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the EU, has long sought investments by foreign companies

The European Union said it will appeal a court ruling from July that found in favor of U.S.-based tech giant Apple (AAPL) in a 13 billion euro ($15 billion) Irish tax case.

The appeal will be heard in the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

The complex case involves allegations that the government of EU member Ireland provided unfair tax breaks to Apple. Initially, in 2016, the European Commission – the executive branch of the EU – ordered Apple to cough up 13 billion euros in back taxes that it claimed it owed to the Dublin government covering the period 2004 to 2014.

Although both Ireland and the smartphone maker appealed that ruling, Apple nonetheless paid the tax bill, but placed the money in escrow in 2018 while litigation continued back and forth.

In July of 2020, the European General Court – which is itself a constituent of the Court of Justice of the EU and which hears cases brought against the EU – determined that the European Commission "did not succeed in showing to the requisite legal standard" that Apple had taken advantage of Ireland's taxation laws.

That ruling overturned a prior order that Apple had to pay billions in taxes to Ireland.

"This case is very important because it will set a precedent for cases we want to fight going forward," an EU official told the Financial Times.

The European Commission has long claimed that Ireland illegally permitted Apple to attribute almost of its earnings derived in the EU to an Irish “head office” that did not physically exist, thereby allowing Apple to avoid paying taxes on revenues generated in the EU. Ireland, in fact, serves as Apple's base for its operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Ireland, which has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the EU, has long sought investments by foreign companies. The Dublin government apparently is willing to forego the huge tax bill in order to promote Ireland as an attractive investment target for international firms.

Margrethe Vestager, executive vice president in charge of competition policy at EU, has spearheaded a campaign to form new tax laws for foreign tech firms like Apple that do extensive business in Europe.

Taliban Increasingly Uses Night Vision Equipment To Gain Upper Hand In Clashes

On September 24th, a video was shared showing a fight between the Taliban and the Afghan Security Forces, recorded with thermal imaging equipment.

Until about 2019, the US military, as well the Afghan Security Forces could effectively damage the Taliban during their night raids, however the group has increasingly been using night vision in its defense and attacks.

The Afghan Security Forces (and if the US doesn’t really withdraw) are practically losing a very important advantage over the militants.

Although, on the other hand, it is extremely difficult to estimate the number of night vision devices and thermal imagers in Taliban possession, it’s possible that only the most elite units have such equipment.

And these “special forces” are extremely rare on the battlefield.

The initial reports of Taliban with night vision equipment surfaced exactly a year ago in a UN report.

Afghan officials cited in the report said the Taliban had at least one night vision device and sniper rifle “for each unit of 10 to 16 Taliban fighters,” the UN report reads.

“The type and origin of such equipment varies and suggests that a number of commercial and military stock items are being supplied in increasing numbers,” according to the report.

“The Taliban enjoy robust supplies of weapons, ammunition, funding and manpower, with 60,000 to 65,000 fighters and half that number or more of facilitators and other non-combatant members,” the report reads.

The night vision devices allow the Taliban to “effectively harass isolated Afghan National Defence and Security Forces checkpoints” and “has proven to be a successful tactic in both gaining and holding territory, as well as being a catalyst for demoralizing the Afghan Forces at such checkpoints,” the report detailed.

The monitoring team said it had also seen Soviet military 1PN night vision scopes.

“Equipment is normally rail mounted onto rifles and becomes most effective in combination with the Taliban’s use of Dragunov 7.62 x 54 mm sniper rifles, which allow effective targeting at up to or even above 800 meters,” the report reads.

Taliban fighters have also been known to acquire night vision goggles through attacks against Afghan commandos and special operations units supplied with U.S. night vision tech.

It is unlikely that the numbers of night vision equipment had gone down since 2019, rather it has most likely gone up.

YUMA PROVING GROUND — After weeks of work in the oppressive Arizona desert heat, on Sept. 23 the U.S. Army carried out a series of live fire engagements at Yuma Proving Ground to show how artificial intelligence systems can work together to automatically detect threats, deliver targeting data and recommend weapons responses at blazing speeds.

Set in the year 2035, the engagements were the culmination of Project Convergence 2020, the first in a series of annual demonstrations utilizing next generation AI, network and software capabilities to show how the Army wants to fight in the future.

The Army was able to use a chain of artificial intelligence, software platforms and autonomous systems to take sensor data from all domains, transform it into targeting information, and select the best weapon system to respond to any given threat in just seconds. Army officials claimed that these AI and autonomous capabilities have shorted the sensor to shooter timeline—the time it takes from when sensor data is collected to when a weapon system is ordered to engaged—from 20 minutes to 20 seconds, depending on the quality of the network and the number of hops between where it’s collected and its destination.

“We use artificial intelligence and machine learning in several ways out here,” said Brigadier General Ross Coffman, director of the Army Futures Command’s Next Generation Combat Vehicle Cross-Functional Team. “We used artificial intelligence to autonomously conduct ground reconnaissance, employ sensors and then passed that information back. We used artificial intelligence and aided target recognition and machine learning to train algorithms on identification of various types of enemy forces. So, it was prevalent throughout the last six weeks.”

Air Force special operators in New Mexico have switched to the service's new handgun, and they like what they see

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, New Mexico — The defenders of the 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron do not take the safety of Cannon's special operations missions lightly.

They are always looking for even the smallest of ways to improve the base's security, a dedication demonstrated in their newest weapon.

The 27 SOSFS completed an operational transition to the M18 Sig Sauer Modular Handgun System last week after starting the change in March. The squadron is adopting the M18 as part of an Air Force-wide transition to the handgun from the decades-old M9 Beretta as the primary pistol for the service.

According to 1st Lt. George Beals, 27 SOSFS logistics flight commander, one of the biggest reasons for the switch is the M18 having a more consistent trigger pull than its predecessor.

"The first time you pull the trigger to fire an M9, you have to pull three times as hard as you would on following trigger pulls," Beals said. "In the M18, the same amount of force is used every single time to pull trigger, which makes it easier for the shooter to hit their target every time."

Another big difference between the two weapons have is what they are made out of.

"The M18 has a polymer construction, making it lighter and less prone to cracks or scratches than the M9's metal build," Beals said.

The ammunition capacity of the new handgun's magazines has also increased, putting more rounds at the user's disposal in a crisis.

5:49 am EDT: Judge Vanessa Baraitser has granted the defense four weeks to prepare it closing argument, saying that her decision would come after the Nov. 4 U.S. election one way or the other. She had been previously reluctant to give more than a week to the defense.

Baraitser set the date of final arguments for Nov. 16. Fitzgerald had told the judge that:

“It seems unlikely for you to make a judgement before Nov. 3 and you would have to bear in mind that the future is uncertain. Much of what we say about Trump is because this proceeding was initiated by Trump,….and some elements of the case would be worse if Trump were there [re-elected].”

Baraitser had raised the issue of the election and how it might impact the hearing. She said: “That’s one of the factors going into my decision.”

“I agree that one way or the other my decision will come after an election in the United States. For that reason I find no reason not to give you the four weeks,” she said.

Baraitser said she could not yet set a judgement day. “That means for your client there will be no decision until the new year, if he appreciates that.”

Reacting to her decision, Kristinn Hrafnsson, editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, said: “District Judge Vanessa Baraitser has acknowledged what has been clear since even before the first indictment against Julian Assange was unsealed — that this is a politically motivated prosecution.”

5:28 am EDT: Defense attorney Mark Summers asked Judge Vanessa Baraitser to give defense witness Patrick Eller, chief executive of Metadata Forensics, an hour to read a prosecution bundle of statements sent to the defense at 11:30 pm on Thursday night.

Summers said that Eller’s written testimony was submitted nine months ago. Summers said it has two propositions: “that the alleged passcode hash conspiracy was impossible, but even if it were possible, it had no utility to what is attributed to it.”

The U.S. government has charged Assange with conspiracy to commit computer intrusion with Chelsea Manning, WikiLeaks’ source.

Summers said that U.S. Assistant Attorney Gordon Kromberg replied in his affidavit initially only to Eller’s first proposition, and only late at night on Thursday to the second.

Summers appealed for an hour for Eller to read the prosecution’s last minute submissions and Baraitser granted it.

Eller is described on his LinkedIn page as a digital forensic examiner, expert witness, principal consultant, adjunct professor, disabled veteran and retired special agent.

The US military has been quietly taking out terrorist leaders in Syria with a modified Hellfire missile packed full of swords, The New York Times reported Friday.

Testifying before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee Thursday, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Christopher Miller revealed that in Syria, "Hurras al-Din — a group made up of several al Qaeda veterans — has suffered successive losses of key leaders and operatives."

And, the secretive Hellfire AGM-114R9X missile, a US weapon typically referred to as the R9X, reportedly played a role in some of those losses.

On Sept. 14, a US Reaper drone operated by special operations forces killed Sayyaf al-Tunsi, a senior attack planner for al Qaeda and its affiliates, with an R9X, The New York Times reported, citing US military and counterterrorism officials, who said that the hit would disrupt Hurras al-Din operations.

Following an R9X strike in June believed to have killed two Hurras al-Din members, the most recent strike marks at least the second time in three months the weapon has been used.

The R9X, The Times reports, has proven useful for targeting terrorist leaders in urban areas, where they assume the US is more hesistant to engage due to the heightened risk of civilian casualties.

The so-called "Ninja Bomb" or "Flying Ginsu," a modified Hellfire equipped with a non-explosive warhead that kills enemies with 100 pounds of metal, sheer force, and six blades, first became public knowledge when The Wall Street Journal reported its existence in May 2019.

The weapon's development began during the Obama administration as an airstrike armament less likely to kill civilians than other battlefield options.

Florida businesses just got a major boost from their Republican governor.Addressing reporters at a press conference in St. Petersburg on Friday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced an executive order allowing bars and restaurants in the state to open at full capacity. “We are today moving into what we initially called Phase 3,” DeSantis said. “And what that’ll mean for the restaurants is there will not be limitations from the state of Florida."

DeSantis said the order will allow workers of all industries in the state an opportunity to continue pursuing their careers during the coronavirus pandemic. He included provisions that will limit the number of restrictions local governments can place on businesses. “We’re also saying in the state of Florida everybody has a right to work,” DeSantis added. “[Local governments] can do reasonable regulations, but they can’t just say no.” The order removes state-level restrictions that forced restaurants and bars to limit capacity seating to 75% and establishes, as a rule, that no local government can make a law restricting capacity seating below 50%.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Chinese President Xi Jinping did not discuss Xi's postponed state visit to Japan in their first telephone conference Friday evening, Suga told reporters. The two leaders agreed to coordinate on a high level, including person-to-person, on both bilateral and international problems, according to Suga. Xi also congratulated him on becoming prime minister, the 71-year-old new leader said. Xi was supposed to travel to Japan in April. But the visit which involved months of planning and was hailed as a potential turning point in Sino-Japanese relations was postponed in March owing to the coronavirus pandemic. Suga, who took office Sept. 16, said he told Xi that "stable relations between Japan and China are extremely important not only bilaterally" but also for the wider world. "Going forward, I want to thoroughly discuss issues that are of high interest to the region and the international community," he said. Japanese government sources said that Suga was referring to tensions in the East China Sea mainly over the Japanese-administered Senkaku Islands, which China claims as the Diaoyu Islands and Beijing's new national security law for Hong Kong. Chinese government ships probed waters around the Senkakus for more than 100 straight days this summer. The sources did not say whether Suga mentioned the Senkakus in his call with Xi.

China's Xinhua News Agency reported that Xi told Suga he is ready to join hands with him to promote new development in the two countries' relationship. "China stands ready to work with the new Japanese government to properly handle key sensitive issues including historical ones, continue to enhance political mutual trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and expand people-to-people exchanges," Xinhua reported Xi as saying. Noting that China and Japan are "crucial close neighbors and partners for each other," Xi pointed out that "constantly expanding common interests for the benefits of the two peoples is the essential need of the new era for China-Japan relations," Xinhua said. Xi also said that China supports Japan in hosting a successful Olympic Games.

Some members of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party have urged the government to cancel plans for Xi's state visit in light of the Senkaku and Hong Kong situations. Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato, the government's top spokesperson, told a news conference before the Suga-Xi call that "we are a not at a point where we can discuss a specific itinerary" for a visit. Friday's talks marked the first telephone conference between Xi and a Japanese prime minister since May 2018. Suga spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the same day. Suga held telephone talks with 10 world leaders and heads of international organizations in the first 10 days after he took office.

He kicked off his diplomatic activity on Sept. 20. His first call was to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, followed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Talks with neighbors China and South Korea came a week after his becoming prime minister.
