When a Chinese company buys a major American magazine, does the publication censor its coverage of China? There is only one example so far, and the results are discouraging. In 2014, a Hong Kong-based investment group called Integrated Whale Media purchased a majority stake in Forbes Media, one of the United States’ best-known media companies. We Americans blithely ignore the long-term effects of allowing foreign corporations to purchase the assets of our country in the form of companies, land, and resources. We are selling off our ability to produce wealth by allowing many American corporations to be purchased by foreign corporations. It is not just foreign companies buying our assets that is the problem ─ it is the state-owned and massively subsidized companies of China that are dangerous because China uses its state-owned enterprises as a strategic tool of the state. By pretending they are private companies abiding by free-market rules makes us the biggest chumps on the planet.

How many Americans paid attention to the news that the world's largest pork producer, American company Smithfield Foods, was acquired by a Chinese corporation in 2013? Shareholders approved the sale of the company to Shuanghui International Holdings Limited, the biggest meat processor in China.

Very few paid any attention to one of the earliest acquisitions by a Chinese corporation — when the Hoover brand was sold to Hong Kong, China-based firm Techtronic Industries in 2006 after Maytag, which owned Hoover, was acquired by Whirlpool.

In January 2014, Motorola Mobility was sold by Google to Chinese computer corporation, Lenovo, which means that the nation that invented smart phones is just about entirely out of the business of producing smart phones in America. This acquisition will give one of China's most prominent technology companies a broader foothold in the U. S. Lenovo is the same company that bought IBM’s line of personal computers in 2004.

Through strategic purchases, China is positioning itself to be our energy supplier as well. Since 2009, Chinese companies have invested billions of dollars acquiring significant percentages of shares of energy companies, such as The AES Corp., Chesapeake Energy, and Oil & Gas Assets. MEMPHIS – An official with the Forrest City Police Department has confirmed officers are on the scene of an active shooter incident at the Walmart Supercenter in Forrest City, Arkansas.

Police confirmed at least three people had been shot.

Forrest City Police dispatcher Chastity Boyd told The Associated Press that three people were shot inside the Walmart. Boyd said she doesn’t know whether a suspect has been detained. Boyd did not have information about the extent of their injuries.

Bill Sadler with the Arkansas State Police said the department had been asked to investigate the incident at the Walmart but that state police had not been given authority to speak on behalf of Forrest City police and that he had no additional information.

Boris Govt to Lower Migrant Salary Threshold in Immigration Reforms: Report

The Conservative government is set to lower the salary threshold for some migrants in its overhaul of immigration laws post-Brexit.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that he wants to introduce an Australia-style, points-based immigration system to be used by both non-EU and EU citizens post-Brexit and once freedom of movement from the bloc has ended. Under current freedom of movement rules, EU and European Economic Area (EEA) citizens can come to live in the UK without restrictions, even if they do not have a job.

It had been discussed maintaining the current Tier 2 (general) visa requirement of having a job offer with a salary threshold of a minimum £30,000. Last month, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) advised the government to lower the threshold to £25,600, battein part to help recruit foreign teachers and NHS staff. However, there is already a lower salary threshold under the current Tier 2 system for jobs on the Shortage Occupation List, which includes nurses, some teachers, and engineers.

It would appear that the Conservative government has accepted the MAC’s advice, with Mr Johnson and Secretary of State for the Home Department Priti Patel expected to announce their immigration reforms on Friday to include lowering the salary threshold for some migrants. The BBC reports sources as saying that ministers plan to lower the salary to the advised £25,600. Workers earning less could earn “points” for qualifications or English language proficiency if applying for a role where there is a skills shortage.

Open borders-sceptic think tank Migration Watch UK warned that such a proposal would mean employers taking advantage of cheaper foreign labour without protecting British workers.

In a statement seen by Breitbart London, Chairman of Migration Watch UK Alp Mehmet said that “the reality is that the proposals would provide easy routes for employers to bring in unlimited numbers paying as little as £17,920 per year without even advertising jobs in the UK first”.

Mr Mehmet also criticised the plans for not including a key element of Australia’s immigration system: a total numbers cap.

“No mention of any limits or of any intention to reduce overall net migration. This is bad news for home-grown workers or of training our own, and hugely disappointing to the 30 million people who were looking for lower levels of immigration. There is little hope of this if such measures are introduced.

“The government has clearly caved into seductive pleas and huge pressure from employers who stand to benefit most from the continuing flow of cheaper labour,” the chairman said.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) statistics published last year revealed that in 2018, 602,000 people entered the UK. While 343,000 people emigrated, that left a net migration of more than a quarter of a million people (259,000).

The Tories had pledged in three consecutive election manifestos to reduce net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands — promises they failed to keep on three occasions and which former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne admitted in 2017 that the government had no intention of fulfilling. However, in the December 2019 pledge, mention of a cap had been dropped altogether.

Speaking ahead of December’s election, Mr Mehmet told Breitbart London: “The Tories have frankly run scared of their previous commitments and promises that they would reduce immigration. ‘Get it down to tens of thousands’ they said, which frankly was not a bad objective.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Harry Reid recognized nine years ago that connections between his official duties and the lobbying activities of his relatives could lead to ethical questions.

In 2003, the Nevada Democrat publicly banned relatives from lobbying him or his staff after newspaper reports showed that Nevada industries and institutions routinely turned to Reid’s sons or son-in-law for representation.

Now, questions surrounding family ties are flaring again in Nevada around the Senate majority leader. He and his oldest son, Rory, are both involved in an effort by a Chinese energy giant, ENN Energy Group, to build a $5 billion solar farm and panel manufacturing plant in the southern Nevada desert.

Reid has been one of the project’s most prominent advocates, helping recruit the company during a 2011 trip to China and applying his political muscle on behalf of the project in Nevada. His son, a lawyer with a prominent Las Vegas firm that is representing ENN, helped it locate a 9,000-acre (3,600-hectare) desert site that it is buying well below appraised value from Clark County, where Rory Reid formerly chaired the county commission.

Craig Holman, a lobbyist for the non-partisan advocacy group Public Citizen, said the senator is dealing with “an iffy ethical landscape” because of the family connections and should recuse himself from the project. “Is this just happening because … it benefits the Reid family, or did Harry Reid actually believe in this?” Holman said.

The senator has supported numerous clean energy projects in Nevada. Rory Reid cites energy as one of his specialty areas at the law firm.

The two Reids deny discussing the ENN project.

“I have never discussed the project with my father or his staff,” said Rory Reid. Kristen Orthman, a spokeswoman for the senator, said he had not discussed the project with his son.

The Langfang, China-based ENN Energy Group hopes to build what would be the largest solar energy complex in America. The site chosen with Rory Reid’s guidance is in tiny Laughlin, Nevada, a gambling town of 7,300 along the Colorado River, 90 miles south of Las Vegas.

3 people injured in Arkansas Walmart shooting

FORREST CITY, Ark. (AP) — At least three people were shot Monday morning at a Walmart in eastern Arkansas, police said.

The shooting was reported mid-morning in Forrest City, a dispatcher with the Forrest City Police Department told The Associated Press.

Forrest City Police dispatcher Chastity Boyd told The Associated Press that three people were shot inside the Walmart, but she didn’t have information about the extent of their injuries.

Boyd said she doesn’t know whether a suspect has been detained.

“I’m scared,” said Kim Bery, an employee who answered the phone at an autoparts store across the street from the Walmart.

Bery said she could see a lot of police at the Walmart and that employees from the store appeared to have been evacuated into the parking lot.

Authorities are working to secure the scene, police said. Forrest City is about 45 miles (70 kilometers) west of Memphis and about 85 miles (135 kilometers) east of Little Rock.

It’s not the first time a Walmart store has been the scene of a shooting. A gunman killed 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Aug. 3.

The retailer came under criticism for having insufficient security at the store on that day has since quietly expanded security at all its El Paso stores to include an armed off-duty police officer and a security guard.

A spokeswoman for the company said in November that the hiring of off-duty officers in El Paso was not a blanket policy. It’s unclear what security measures were in place at the Forrest City store on Monday.

'I don’t understand how you can be a pedophile and keep your job’: 12-year old asks NHC School Board

Parents packed the New Hanover County School Board meeting Tuesday, demanding for superintendent Tim Markley to be removed.

Many of those parents and even a 12-year-old girl spoke out about the school sex scandal.

This all comes after investigators arrested Roland Grise band teacher, Peter Frank.

Frank is charged with a dozen felony sex crimes against female students.

It’s the third arrest of a school system employee on these types of charges within the past two years.

This was the second time this week the board met and did not mention the sex scandal. The meeting left parents more frustrated than ever after the board failed to discuss Peter Frank or any administration issues.

Dozens took to the podium during the public comment period.

“I am here today as a constituent, as a voter, and as a concerned parent to call for the resignation, the immediate resignation of Superintendent Tim Markley, Chairwoman Lisa Estep, and the following board members, David Wortman, Jeanette Nichols, Bill Rivenbark, Nelson Beaulieu, and Stephanie Adams, leaving Judy Justice the only person to sit on this board, therefore, making her Madam Chairwoman,” said one parent.

“We’re done with excuses and we’re done with blindly sending our children to schools you govern where they are clearly not safe,” said a social worker.

“It looks like things are being covered up,” said one mother.

Almost every person who spoke called for the termination of Markley or board members.

"I call for the immediate termination of Tim Markley and I call for an investigation into all board members as well as all admin in the district,” one speaker said.

“We call for the immediate termination of our superintendent for his role in over two decades of corruption and covering up child sexual abuse. We call for a complete change in leadership from top to bottom,” said another.

Hazel Eyles, a 12-year-old Murray Middle School student, stood in front of the board and hundreds of community members to read a statement she wrote herself.

“I asked my mom if I could speak tonight because, although I haven’t been directly impacted by this issue, I don’t understand how you can be a pedophile and keep your job,” she said. “If I do something bad at school I could be suspended or expelled, but if a teacher does something to a child, they keep their job. People should be held accountable if they do something wrong, and the teachers that have hurt these kids were not held accountable.”

Roland Grise Gifted Education Specialist Kendra Harrison also was at the meeting Tuesday. She said she feels like this is a top-down issue.

“One of the things that we really pride ourselves on as teachers are the relationships we build with our students and their families and for this board to allow that to be taken away in a second, it’s absolutely devastating,” Harrison said.

She talked about the devastation it has caused the school and the students.

“I have never been embarrassed to say that I work at Roland Grise. I’ve spent the majority of my career in that school, this is my ninth year there and I was embarrassed to wear my badge,” Harrison said. “You would question if you could even put this on your resume for heaven’s sake. The educators that I work with every day are dedicated, they’re smart, they’re caring, we’re obviously not in this for the money. We love what we do, and it’s a shame that someone would take what we’ve spent our life’s work on and turn it into the spectacle that it’s become.”

Despite repeated calls for Markley to be removed, he’s still on the job.

Another high ranking school administrator, though, is not. Dr. John Welmers, the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources resigned.

Beijing’s infrastructure projects may grab headlines, but its efforts to shape the media are more dangerous.

Washington has long been concerned about China’s “no strings attached” infrastructure deals in African markets. These large port, rail, and road projects grab headlines and stoke fears about African government debt levels and Chinese political influence. But the real strategic threat for the United States is not bricks-and-mortar projects but rather China’s efforts to reshape African countries’ media landscape.

In just over a decade, China has dramatically expanded its media presence in Africa, urging not just African publics to “tell China’s story well” but also influencing the continent’s underlying telecommunications, data, and information standards. Given that the United States has historically held a competitive advantage in communications and media, it should pay attention.

Today, mobile devices and television have near-universal penetration in Africa’s media markets. China’s telecom investments through Huawei Technologies and ZTE, whose largest shareholder is a Chinese state-owned firm, have established more than 40 third-generation telecom networks in more than 30 African countries. And Chinese firms make a huge chunk of the cell phones sold there. Transsion Holdings, which does not operate in the United States or Europe, accounts for 30 percent of African phone sales (under its brand Tecno Mobile), ahead of second-place Samsung at 22 percent. Transsion recently announced plans to raise more than $420 million for expansion through an initial public offering on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market technology board.

In South Africa, meanwhile, Huawei accounts for 14.5 percent of phones sold, the second-highest share and significantly more than Apple’s 4 percent. Although much of Africa consumes media through mobile devices, TV sales are growing among the middle class, and Chinese electronics companies are aggressively pursuing that market. Konka Group has set up a factory in Egypt to serve the regional market and has partnered with Jumia as a sales platform. In South Africa, Hisense, with investment from the China-Africa Development Fund, operates production facilities in Cape Town and is the leading player in the TV market with more than 22 percent market share. By dominating how media is delivered, Chinese companies are literally acting as the window to the world for millions of Africans.

The 11 top U.S. companies targeted by China

China is looking to buy American - at a never-before-seen clip. Starwood Hotels & Resorts (HOT) is just the biggest and latest target.

Chinese investors and buyers have announced plans to spend $39 billion so far this year buying U.S. companies, says Richard Peterson, senior director at S&P Global Market Intelligence. This whopping total includes Anbang Insurance Group's offer for hotel chain Starwood Hotels & Resorts, which S&P Global says values at $15.2 billion.

The pace of Chinese buying of U.S. companies is unprecedented, Peterson says. The value of Chinese bids for U.S. companies just this year is roughly four times the $9.4 billion of Sino-U.S. deals announced last year and already well above the previous record of $11.8 billion Chinese companies announced spending in 2013. 2013 was the year China's Henan Shineway Industry Group agreed to buy food processor Smithfield Foods for $7.3 billion.

"The deal flow is self-explanatory," Peterson says. "It will be a record year for Chinese acquisitions of companies based in the U.S."

China's shopping spree in the U.S. is starting to get harder to ignore given some of the high-profile targets. Five of the six largest Chinese buyouts of U.S. companies have all occurred this year, Peterson says. Ingram Micro, a U.S.-based company that distributes electronics made by companies ranging from Apple (AAPL) to Microsoft (MSFT) was bought in February by China's Tianjin Tianhai for $7.3 billion - making it the third largest China offer for a U.S. company after Starwood and Smithfield.

Then there was China's Qingdao Haier's $5.4 billion buy of General Electric's (GE) GE Appliances unit in January.

Chinese buying is getting to levels that investors can't write off as just a blip, Peterson says. The dollar value of Chinese buyouts account for about a third of the total spent by all foreign buyers. "This could be a topic for the elections," he says.
