Ray Drake of Des Moines had four trees on his property come down. He also lost at least part of a privacy fence — but was unable to join as others ventured out in the following days and started hauling off debris.

Dr. Deborah Birx has called for statewide face mask mandates, despite mounting public resentment.

“To every university student out there, if you have done something that is not so great and so smart, you’ve been in a crowd without a mask, you’re likely to become infected,” she stated. “Do not go home to your parents or your grandparents over Labor Day weekend and spread the virus to them.”

The White House task force coordinator made those comments to reporters in Livonia, Michigan on Wednesday. Her remarks came after many schools across the U.S. resumed in-person classes with new safety precautions in place.

Birx also praised state and local officials for enforcing face mask mandates.

“The best enforcement for masks is retail. I will see people like get out of their car, run up to the gas station and then they see the sign: ‘No mask, no entry.’ That kind of constant behavioral reinforcement, that we need to have a mask on when we’re in public and anywhere. Unicef says New Zealand is failing children after a new report revealed the country’s poor childhood obesity and suicide statistics have pushed it to near the very bottom on child wellbeing.

The latest Unicef Innocenti report card shows that, out of 41 developed countries in the OECD and European Union, New Zealand ranks 35th.

The country’s youth suicide rates are the second highest in the developed world, with 14.9 deaths per 100,000 adolescents, according to the UN Children’s Fund rankings. Only 64% of 15-year-olds have basic reading and maths skills.

New Zealand also has the second-highest obesity rate in the OECD with than one in three children being obese or overweight.

Unicef NZ executive director Vivien Maidaborn said New Zealand’s rankings were “woeful”.

“The report card gives New Zealand an F for failure when it comes to wellbeing outcomes for children,” she said. “This is a woeful result for a country that prides itself on the great outdoors, academic achievement, and the international success of our sports teams. It is time to be alarmed and activated about the inequality of opportunity, health and wellbeing in New Zealand.”

She said that Unicef urged the government to listen carefully to the perspectives of children and young people, and to hear what they have to say about wellbeing.

“We need to reimagine Aotearoa by heeding the advice from child rights experts – and especially Māori leaders and academics – in order to make New Zealand the best country in the world to be a child.”

The prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, said the report was more reflective of the previous government’s underinvestment in families and did not take into account its recent progress and funding that had been allocated to the area.

Ardern said the Unicef report pre-dated both her government’s $5.5bn (US$3.7bn) families package and its progress lifting more than 18,000 children out of poverty.

In December last year, New Zealand’s children’s commissioner said the Ardern government had failed to reduce child poverty. Andrew Becroft’s report found 148,000 children lived in homes experiencing material hardship in six or more areas, including lack of access to basics such as warm clothing, health care and food. The figures were unchanged since the first report into child poverty in 2012.

Ardern’s government accepted the recommendations from the Unicef report to consult with children, ensure an integrated approach to child wellbeing and plan for the future, she said.

“What’s important is that as a government we keep making progress to ensure our children have a warm, dry home, access to healthcare, safe and healthy food, and the chance to have a childhood in which they’re free to learn and play,” Ardern said.

European countries all came at the top of the charts for child wellbeing with the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, Spain, France, Belgium, Slovenia, and Sweden all taking out the top 10 places.

Patton Oswalt posted his tirade along with a photo of President Trump conducting a teleconference. It remains unclear what exactly triggered the comedian’s diatribe — for Gaffigan, it was the president’s RNC speech — but it appears to have something to do with continued coronavirus quarantines and lockdowns.

“Donald forced America to live in the only reality HE’S comfortable in. Everyone’s huddled at home, watching TV, eating takeout food, clumsily promoting themselves on Zoom and Til Tok [sic] just to stay alive,” Oswalt wrote. “The only people allowed outside are the people he never sees or acknowledges, the ones who replace the water bottle and cedar shavings in the hamster pen he loves.”

Oswalt even compared President Trump to the fame-obsessed protagonist Rupert Pupkin in Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy. “The sports that are played are played in empty stadiums full of cut-outs like Rupert Pupkin’s basement, which is how Donald interacts with the world in his mind.”

Oswalt appeared to blame the present for the decimation of the creative industries due to the coronavirus, even though the president has been pushing for states to re-open their economies.

“Artisans. Craft. Skills and soul. Hates them. So they’re gone. We are literally living in Donald’s curdled reality, now and forever. And it isn’t that he enjoys (or hates or even feels anything for) endless TV and take-out food and self-promotion and bragging in the place of competence and mastery.”

Queen Elizabeth II will be discussing the Jeffrey Epstein scandal in detail with Prince Andrew who arrived at Balmoral recently.

According to reports, the Duke of York headed towards the Scottish Highlands back in July following accusations by US prosecutors of not assisting in the case against the late convicted sexual predator and his procurer Ghislaine Maxwell.

It is now suggested that Yujia failed to properly transfer the rights to Chan, and that the apartments are being claimed as Yujia-owned assets in a dispute over payments between Yujia and another developer Tenhong Real Estate. In July, a court ordered the seizure of Yujia’s assets and ordered them to be sold.

Local media have reported that one of the apartments was where Jackie Cha’s son Jaycee was caught by Beijing police in 2014 while in possession of marijuana. Jaycee was sentenced to six months in jail.

In addition to being one of China’s best paid and most enduring movie stars, Chan also has wide-ranging business interests. He is understood to have other properties, including in Hong Kong.

The number of new applications for unemployment benefits dipped to 881,000 last week, the Labor Department reported Thursday in an encouraging sign for the economy.

Forecasters had projected 950,000 new jobless claims.

The agency employed a new methodology for adjusting for seasonal changes in employment, such as teachers returning to work or students quitting their jobs to return to school. The extreme rise in jobless claims caused by the pandemic made such adjustments difficult.

An additional 760,000 workers applied for benefits through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, which provides for unemployment insurance for people sidelined by the epidemic who normally wouldn't be eligible for benefits, such as gig workers whose business dried up.

Seasonally unadjusted claims for regular benefits were just over 833,000 last week and have been trending lower, suggesting that there has been real underlying improvement in the labor market.
