Univision’s Miami affiliate had no choice but to cover the protest, organized by Cubans4Trump among other groups, as it happened in front of their own building. But Univision made sure the story stayed local, as the protest didn’t make it to the network’s national newscast. The march is a reflection of what has been occurring within the Hispanic community for quite some time- a loss of confidence in the news media outlets that claim to serve the community. It is only a matter of time before the events in Miami duplicate themselves in places like New York, Houston, Chicago, and even Los Angeles. The people are fed up at the onslaught of activism seeking to pass itself off as journalism. Will Spanish-language media listen?

In the last few weeks one of Latin America’s most prosperous and politically stable countries has been rocked by protests and looting. During the protests several people have died, and thousands have been injured and arrested, but the left-wing Antifa-style demonstrators have shown their true Satanic identity to the world yesterday, when they destroyed a church and burned statues of Jesus in the street. This long-running protest was initially triggered by a rise in the Santiago Metro’s subway fare and the increased cost of living in the Jesuit-controlled country.

Some say it is not a coincidence that the accidents started soon after the death of the enormously influential local Jesuit José Aldunate, a charismatic member of the Society of Jesus who is best known for being a human rights activist during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, and was the Provincial of the Jesuits in Chile. José Aldunate, who died of natural causes on September 29th, was awarded the National Prize for Human Rights in 2016.

However, in a count made last year by the Chilean National prosecutor’s office, some 221 Catholic priests and 8 Catholic bishops have been put under investigation up and down the country on charges of sexual abuse and cover-up, all due to allegations made from the year 2000 – 2018. Pressure mounts on Barr DOJ to identify funders, organizers of violent riots

Conservative pressure is mounting on Attorney General William Barr and his Justice Department to ratchet up investigations of violent rioters across the country, specifically to identify those funding and organizing the mayhem. Rep. Ken Buck, R-Calif., and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, made weekend appeals for DOJ to take action to cut off funding and logistical support for the groups of rioters that have terrorized and destroyed American cities for months. “Law enforcement needs to look at the funding of violent criminal activity like this. And national Democrats need to confront it. It’s organized. It’s paid for. It’s violent. It’s not about Black lives or any lives; it’s about anarchy and destruction,” Paul wrote in a Fox News op-ed on Saturday.

The Kentucky senator’s comments came after he and his wife was confronted by an angry mob in Washington DC while leaving President Trump’s nominating convention acceptance speech Thursday night. Paul said some of activists ended up staying on the same floor of his hotel, furthering his concern for safety. Buck tweeted his concerns on Sunday, saying it was time for DOJ to follow the money. "The Justice Department needs to open an investigation into who is funding these violent riots," Buck wrote. The weekend pressure follows other GOP lawmakers urging DOJ to do more to stop the organize violence plaguing U.S. cities since June. For instance, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., earlier this month urged DOJ to prosecute the suspects caught on videotape beating and kicking a man who crashed his truck near Black Lives Matter protests in Portland, Ore. "This shocking attack by a mob against a young man in the streets of Portland is beyond the pale," Graham wrote.

U.S. intelligence won’t answer if it spies on American journalists

ODNI has rejected a FOIA request from Just the News seeking transparency on spy agency monitoring of journalists.

The Office of Director of National Intelligence is refusing to say whether U.S. spy agencies monitor American journalists' overseas phone calls or records that were collected by the National Security Agency, saying revealing the answer could jeopardize its tactics. The ODNI's answer came late last week in response to a Just the News request under the Freedom of Information Act for any records since 2015 that "show the frequency by which professional journalists' phone records were searched via the NSA database and any journalists' overseas conversations were unmasked." "ODNI can neither confirm nor deny the existence or non-existence of the requested records," the agency wrote in a letter to Just the News. "The fact of the existence or non-existence of the requested records is itself currently and properly classified, and could reveal intelligence sources and methods information that is protected from disclosure pursuant to Section 102A(i)(l) of the National Security Act of 1947, as amended, 50 U.S.C. § 3024(i)(l)." Just the News is considering appealing the decision and going to court.

It is the second such rejection by ODNI in recent weeks for FOIA requests designed to illuminate just how far-reaching U.S. intelligence community monitoring of American citizens has become. The Project for Privacy and Surveillance Accountability (PPSA), a nonprofit where former House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) works as a senior adviser, was rejected recently for records it sought on whether U.S. intelligence has been surveilling past and current U.S. senators and House members. Specifically, the group asked ODNI whether the spy agencies it supervises unmasked the identities of current and past lawmakers known to have been caught up in foreign surveillance, and whether the names of these members were searched through what is known as the "upstream" phone database. The request covered a bipartisan group of 48 current and former lawmakers and their potential surveillance from Jan. 1, 2008 to Jan. 15, 2020. ODNI summarily denied the FOIA with what is known as a "Glomar response," saying confirming or denying such surveillance "could reveal sources and methods information." There is at least one documented instance of executive branch spying on Congress in the last decade.

The CIA inspector general concluded in 2014 that CIA officers wrongly spied on Senate Intelligence Committee investigators preparing a report on the agency's terrorist interrogation program. On Friday, Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) asked U.S spy agencies if they have spied on lawmakers in the last decade, based on allegations in a recent book by journalist Barton Gellman. In addition, Eshoo asked, "Do technical safeguards exist to prevent IC employees and contractors from querying databases, without express legal authorization or as part of a court-approved investigation, for information about any Member of Congress, federal judge, Supreme Court justice, or any other employee of the legislative or judicial branches of the federal government?”

Within 10 minutes, he had company: three armed men dressed in fatigues emblazoned with the logo of a major drug cartel.

The traffickers had a particular interest in that tower, owned by Boston-based American Tower Corp (AMT.N), which rents space to carriers on its thousands of cellular sites in Mexico. The cartel had installed its own antennas on the structure to support their two-way radios, but the contractor had unwittingly blacked out the shadowy network.

The visitors let him off with a warning.

“I was so nervous... Seeing them armed in front of you, you don’t know how to react,” the worker told Reuters, recalling the 2018 encounter. “Little by little, you learn how to coexist with them, how to address them, how to make them see that you don’t represent a threat.”

The contractor had disrupted a small link in a vast criminal network that spans much of Mexico. In addition to high-end encrypted cell phones and popular messaging apps, traffickers still rely heavily on two-way radios like the ones police and firefighters use to coordinate their teams on the ground, six law enforcement experts on both sides of the border told Reuters.

Traffickers often erect their own radio antennas in rural areas. They also install so-called parasite antennas on existing cell towers, layering their criminal communications network on top of the official one. By piggybacking on telecom companies’ infrastructure, cartels save money and evade detection since their own towers are more easily spotted and torn down, law enforcement experts said.

Holm also says that a very interesting event occurred in connection with the arrest on Stortorget. The police announced that they needed to make a copy of the chief of staff's video camera, which was used to document the police operation against Paludan at the Öresund Bridge. But instead they seized the card.

Twitter removes QAnon supporter's false claim about Covid-19 death statistics that Trump had retweeted

Twitter on Sunday took down a tweet containing a false claim about coronavirus death statistics that was made by a supporter of the baseless QAnon conspiracy theory – a post that US President Donald Trump had retweeted earlier in the day.

The tweet which has been replaced with a message saying, "This Tweet is no longer available because it violated the Twitter Rules from "Mel Q," copied from someone else's Facebook post, claimed that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had "quietly" updated its numbers "to admit that only 6%" of people listed as coronavirus deaths "actually died from Covid," since "the other 94% had 2-3 other serious illnesses."

That's not what the CDC said.

As of Sunday at 4 p.m. ET, Twitter had not removed a second tweet, also retweeted by the President on Sunday, that spread the same false claim. The second tweet, by Trump campaign adviser Jenna Ellis, linked to an article on the right-wing website Gateway Pundit that was based on the QAnon supporter's tweet.

CNN has reached out to the White House for comment on Trump's retweets.

Ex-Boston Police Union Pres. Charged With Raping 4 More Children

A former head of Boston's police union already charged with raping a young relative now faces 16 new charges and accusations that he sexually assaulted and abused four more children, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Patrick Rose, a former Boston police officer and president of the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association, was arrested on child sex charges earlier this month. Those charges stemmed from allegations he sexually assaulted a young relative starting when she was 7.

Rose was arraigned Tuesday on the 16 new charges, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins' office. There are 11 counts of child rape and five counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

Prosecutors now say Rose sexually assaulted five children. Of the new victims, one was allegedly abused within the last two years, while Rose allegedly abused the other three in the 1990s.

In a statement, Rollins called Rose's alleged behavior "unconscionable."

"There is nothing more horrible and depraved than sexually abusing a child, and in this case it is made even more unfathomable that the defendant is a former member of law enforcement," Rollins said. "He actually swore an oath to protect victims from harm, instead he was preying on and harming our most vulnerable and innocent, young children."

A not guilty plea was entered for Rose at his arraignment, according to The Boston Globe.

Judge Kathleen Coffey raised Rose's bail from $250,000 to $270,000, prosecutors said. She kept in place an order that Rose must wear a GPS monitor, surrender his passport, surrender any firearms as well as his license to carry, have no unsupervised contact with any child under the age of 16 and stay away from and have no contact with the victims.

When Rose was arraigned in West Roxbury District Court on the first charges, the 66-year-old hid his face.

'Completely New Type Of Narco Submarine Discovered In The Atlantic'

The Atlantic narco-submarine scene is intensifying. On August 27 Spanish police, once again, captured a completely new type drug smuggling vessel. It is only the third so-called ‘narco sub’ found in Spain, but like the previous two it is particularly unusual. Spanish smugglers do things their own way, creating very different vessels than their Latin American counterparts. This new type is known locally as a Ghost Glider (planeadora fantasma)

So-called narco submarines are purpose designed boats intended to hide low in the water to avoid detection. Very few can actually submerge, but the name fits. This one appears to be a hybrid of what we call a Low Profile Vessel (LPV) and a traditional go-fast vessel (GFV). It doesn’t appear to sit as low in the water as most others, but has other trappings of narco-subs, notably the custom deck and cockpit. These can be seen in this photo gallery by the Faro de Vigo (in Spanish).

Planeadora fantasma (Ghost Glider) is a term which is also used for high speed narco boats in Spain. Planeadora can mean speedboat. Some of the drug running ones in Spain are massive and can be powered by up to seven outboard motors. Although this one has at least two water jets it seems to emphasize endurance and sea keeping.

A distinctive feature is the tubular collar running along the side. This is normally associated with a RIB (rigid inflatable boat)

Army troops heading to California to join fight against wildfires

Army troops from the 2nd Infantry Division on Monday are flying to northern California to help battle raging wildfires in the Mendocino National Forest, officials said.

About 200 soldiers from the 14th Engineer Battalion have been selected to assist the U.S. Forest Service with their fire response efforts. Along with being fitted with their protective gear - including fire-retardant clothing, boots, gloves and hard hats - the soldiers began training on the use of fire shelters at their home station, Joint Base Lewis-McChord in near Tacoma, Wash., Army officials said.

The soldiers will continue their training and be certified before they are sent to join the fight against the August Complex Fire that began as 37 lightning-ignited fires in the Mendocino National Forest on Aug. 17.

India's former president Pranab Mukherjee has died 21 days after it was confirmed that he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The 84-year-old was in hospital to remove a clot in his brain, when it was discovered he also had Covid-19.

Before serving as president between 2012 and 2017, Mr Mukherjee held several important portfolios during his 51-year political career.

Oregon state police returning to Portland following fatal shooting

Gov. Brown said the nearly 100 days of protests have stretched the Portland Police Bureau’s resources thin

Under the plan, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office will prosecute serious criminal offenses, including arson and physical violence. Meanwhile, the sheriff's office will work with other agencies to hold people booked for violent behavior and ensure that there is adequate jail space to hold such individuals, according to the statement.

“We all must come together—elected officials, community leaders, all of us—to stop the cycle of violence,” said Brown. “But this is only the first step. Real change will come from the hard work to achieve racial justice. And it starts with all of us listening to each other, and working together."

The U.S. Attorney and the FBI will also be committing additional resources for the investigation of criminal activity, the statement said.

Protests on Sunday night in Portland saw people demonstrating outside a public safety building, leading to police declaring the gathering an unlawful assembly. Several people were detained after police said protesters were seen throwing projectiles.

Some of the protesters were heard earlier chanting “No Cops - No Prisons, Total Abolition," according to a tweet from a reporter with Portland's KOIN.

It follows a chaotic 24 hours in Portland that began on Saturday evening when a caravan of about 600 vehicles packed with Trump supporters drove through the liberal city and was met with counterprotesters, leading to skirmishes between the groups.

About 15 minutes after the caravan left the city, a supporter of the right-wing group Patriot Prayer was fatally shot.

Patriot Prayer founder Joey Gibson identified the victim as Aaron “Jay” Danielson, who allegedly also went by the name Jay Bishop, according to the group's Facebook page. Gibson called the victim a “good friend,” but provided no additional details.

The U.S. Army will hold live-fire drills about 70 miles from the Russian border over the next 10 days, Pentagon officials said as they announced another show of force on Moscow’s doorstep.

U.S. Army Europe’s 41st Field Artillery Brigade will conduct the Rail Gunner Rush drills in Tapa, Estonia, in partnership with Estonian Defense Forces. It’s the 41st Field Artillery Brigade’s first live-fire training event outside of Germany, officials said. About 70 soldiers will take part in the exercise.

Amazon wins FAA approval for Prime Air drone delivery fleet

Amazon received federal approval to operate its fleet of Prime Air delivery drones, a milestone that allows it to expand unmanned package delivery, the Federal Aviation Administration said Monday.

The approval will give Amazon broad privileges to “safely and efficiently deliver packages to customers,” the FAA said. The FAA certification comes under Part 135 of FAA regulations, which gives Amazon the ability to carry property on small drones “beyond the visual line of sight” of the operator.

Representatives from Amazon didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Amazon began testing delivery drones in 2013, aiming to drop off packages at customers’ doorsteps in 30 minutes or less. Last August, the company submitted a petition for FAA approval of those plans. In its petition, Amazon said deliveries would occur in areas with low population density and packages would weigh 5 pounds or less.

The company debuted a new, electric delivery drone at its re:MARS conference last year that’s capable of carrying packages under 5 pounds to customers within a half-hour and can fly up to 15 miles. Jeff Wilke, Amazon’s CEO of worldwide consumer, said at the time that the drone could be used by the company “within months” to deliver packages.

President Trump’s approval has risen significantly in the past week, and means he now has a significant lead nation-wide, according to a new Democracy Institute/Sunday Express Poll.

The survey indicates that Trump now has a three-point lead in the national popular vote, and has forged ahead to a seven-point lead in key battleground states.

Trump leads by 48% to Joe Biden’s 45% nationally, which equates to a one point jump since the beginning of the month.

The seven point lead Trump now commands in states such as Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, according to the poll, is a two point bump on a month ago.

The poll was conducted on Friday August 29, the day after the RNC ended.

The poll also shows that Trump’s support among black and hispanic voters has increased to 19% of black votes, 11 points higher than in 2016, and 39% of hispanic votes, 10 points higher than in 2016.

The poll also projects that Trump will score a higher electoral college margin over his opponent than in 2016, by winning in Minnesota and New Hampshire.

The poll numbers also indicate that Trump will win the electoral college vote in Wisconsin.

“Wisconsin is the last of the swing rust belt states to reach a tipping point on law and order,” Democracy Institute Polling Director Patrick Basham told Breitbart News.

Biden and the Democrats’ belated addressing of the rioting, attempting to blame it on Trump, appears to have come too late, particularly in Wisconsin, where lifelong Democrats say they’re either not voting or voting for Trump.

Meanwhile, some Democrats, such as Willie Brown, are pleading with the party to stop legitimising looting and rioting, as it will help re-elect President Trump.

Biden charged Saturday that Trump is using the National Guard as a “prop or as a private militia to violate the rights of fellow citizens”

A U.S. Navy warship has transited the narrow and sensitive Taiwan Strait for the second time in two weeks.

Taiwan's Defence Ministry confirmed the operation on Monday amid rising tensions between China and the United States.

The ministry said a U.S. destroyer, which it did not name, had sailed in a southerly direction through the strait and was continuing to sail south.

The ship was on an 'ordinary mission' and the situation was 'normal', the ministry added, without giving details.

The U.S. Navy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The U.S. guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin sailed through the strait on August 18, in what China's military called an 'extremely dangerous' move.

Both China and the United States have been stepping up their military activities in the region, both around Chinese-claimed Taiwan and in the disputed South China Sea.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen warned last week of the risk of accidental conflict from the rise in military activities.

China claims democratic Taiwan as its own territory, and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control.

The Trump administration's plans for targeting apps made in China go beyond TikTok and WeChat, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said on Monday.

Navarro appeared on Fox Business's Mornings With Maria to discuss the expected sale of TikTok by Chinese technology company ByteDance and the concerns that he said administration officials have about other apps made in China.

"It's critical that this country not use apps that are made in China or that can take our data and go to servers in China, because that data will be used to surveil, monitor and track you. It will be used to steal your passwords, it will be used in some cases to try to blackmail or extort you," Navarro said.

"That's really the policy position underlying why we have gone after TikTok and WeChat—and there will be others," Navarro added. China "is basically going out around the world trying to acquire technology and influence," a strategy that Navarro said President Donald Trump "is not going to put up with."

Google Insider: Bombshell Book ‘Deleted’ Will ‘Shake the Foundations of Silicon Valley’

An upcoming book from Breitbart News investigative reporter Allum Bokhari is set to “shake the foundations of Silicon Valley,” according to a Big Tech source who has worked at numerous tech giants including Google.

The book, #DELETED: Big Tech’s Battle to Erase the Trump Movement and Steal the Election, will be published by Center Street on September 22, and is currently available for preorder at Barnes & Noble and other retailers.

“When voters find out what big tech companies have done to meddle in the coming election, they’ll be rightly furious” said the source, who worked on key Google products for several years.

“The level of covert manipulation is breathtaking. Every American who’s worried about the future of free and fair elections should read this book.”

The book’s author, Allum Bokhari, has worked as a tech reporter at Breitbart News since 2015. He has helped whistleblowers within Google, Facebook, and YouTube release damning leaks exposing Big Tech’s political bias.

In 2018, he obtained “The Google Tape,” a one-hour recording of Google’s top executives reacting to the election of Donald Trump in 2016. The most powerful people at the company, including co-founder Sergey Brin, CEO Sundar Pichai, and chief legal officer Kent Walker expressed dismay over Trump’s election, with Walker pledging to make the populist movement a “blip” in history.

Star Parker: Black Lives Matter Got ‘Success Sequence’ Billboards Pulled Down in Milwaukee

Star Parker’s organization, UrbanCURE — or Center for Urban Renewal and Education — recently posted billboards with several points anyone could follow to live a better life, only for them to be pulled down prematurely.

Parker told The Kyle Olson Show that the message, titled “Success Sequence,” was simple: “Tired of poverty? Finish School, Take Any Job, Get Married, Save & Invest, Give Back To Your Neighborhood.”

Parker said her group “fights poverty and restores dignity through messages of faith, freedom, and personal responsibility.”

She said because so many churches are closed in urban areas due to the coronavirus, UrbanCURE wanted to take the message directly to residents.

Parker said the Milwaukee chapter of Black Lives Matter “didn’t like it” and “went after our boards,” alleging they were racist and sexist.

“They told Clear Channel Outdoor,” the company that approved and posted the billboards, “that they will control messaging, that they will control narrative,” she alleged.

Parker claimed the Black Lives Matter activists obtained the phone numbers of the company representatives and they “terrorized those folks and threatened violence and threatened intimidation until the company pulled our billboards down.”

Air Force uses mobile operations center for B-2 bomber for first time

Aug. 31 (UPI) – The U. S. Air Force Global Strike Command has set up its first overseas mobile operations center for B-2 stealth bomber missions, the branch announced Monday.

The center was established by the 393rd Expeditionary Bomb Squadron of Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., for the first time on Aug. 20 during a deployment to Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, which is on a British archipelago in the Indian Ocean where a squadron of B-2 bombers was deployed earlier this month.

The mission planning and monitoring facility enables the 393rd EBS to plot actions on any airfield in the world available to the B-2, which officials say will offer greater flexibility for mission deployment.

"This is the future of bomber mission planning," Lt. Col. Christopher Conant, Bomber Task Force commander, said in a statement. "Our objective out here is to create an ability to move a B-2 unit to any location in the world and generate combat sorties, as the Air Force Global Strike 2020 Strategic Plan outlines."

KIGALI (Reuters) - Rwanda said on Monday it had detained Paul Rusesabagina - the man who was hailed a hero in a Hollywood movie about the country’s 1994 genocide - on terrorism charges and paraded him in front of media in handcuffs.

Rusesabagina was played by Don Cheadle in the Oscar-nominated film ‘Hotel Rwanda’ which told the story of how he used his job as a hotel manager and his connections with the Hutu elite to protect Tutsis fleeing the slaughter.

On Monday, two police officers brought the 66-year-old to the headquarters of Rwanda Investigations Bureau and let media film him and take photographs.

Rusesabagina, who wore a facemask, did not speak. He has in the past said he is the victim of a smear campaign in Rwanda.

“Rusesabagina is suspected of being a founder or a leader or sponsor or member of violent armed extremist terror outfits ... operating out of various places in the region and abroad,” the bureau’s spokesman, Thierry Murangira, told journalists.

He said Rusesabagina would face several charges including “terrorism, financing terrorism ... arson, kidnap and murder.”

He did not say how or where Rusesabagina was arrested.

Rusesabagina moved abroad after the genocide and won worldwide acclaim, receiving the United States’ highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 2005.

But back home, he has sparked outrage with warnings of another genocide, this time by Tutsis against Hutus. He has drawn criticism from some genocide survivors and president Paul Kagame who accused him of exploiting the genocide for commercial gain.

In 2010, the prosecutor general told Reuters authorities had evidence Rusesabagina had funded terrorist groups, though no charges were brought.

How the growing pro-Trump movement is preying on churchgoers to spread its conspiracy theories.

The first family to quit Pastor Clark Frailey’s church during the pandemic did it by text message. It felt to Frailey like a heartbreaking and incomplete way to end a years-long relationship. When a second young couple said they were doubting his leadership a week later, Frailey decided to risk seeing them in person, despite the threat of covid-19.

It was late May, and things were starting to reopen in Oklahoma, so Frailey and the couple met in a near-empty fast food restaurant to talk it over.

The congregants were worried about Frailey’s intentions. At Coffee Creek, his evangelical church outside Oklahoma City, he had preached on racial justice for the past three weeks. He says the couple didn’t appreciate his most recent sermon, which urged Christians to call out and challenge racism anywhere they saw it, including in their own church. Though Frailey tries to keep Coffee Creek from feeling too traditional—he wears jeans, and the church has a modern band and uses chairs instead of pews—he considers himself a theologically conservative Southern Baptist pastor. But at one point, the couple Frailey spoke to said they believed that he was becoming a “social justice warrior.”

Pastors and congregants disagree all the time, and Frailey doesn’t want to be the sort of Christian leader whom people feel afraid to challenge. But in that restaurant, it felt to him as if he and they had read two different sacred texts. It was as if the couple were “believing internet memes over someone they’d had a relationship with for over five years,” Frailey says.

At one point he brought up QAnon, the conspiracy theory holding that Donald Trump is fighting a secret Satanic pedophile ring run by liberal elites. When he asked what they thought about it, the response was worryingly ambiguous. “It wasn’t like, ‘I fully believe this,’” he says. “It was like, ‘I find it interesting.’ These people are dear to me and I love them. It’s just—it felt like there was someone else in the conversation that I didn’t know who they were.”

New Trump pandemic adviser pushes controversial 'herd immunity' strategy, worrying public health officials

WASHINGTON - One of President Donald Trump's top medical advisers is urging the White House to embrace a controversial "herd immunity" strategy to combat the pandemic, which would entail allowing the coronavirus to spread through most of the population to quickly build resistance to the virus, while taking steps to protect those in nursing homes and other vulnerable populations, according to five people familiar with the discussions.

The administration has already begun to implement some policies along these lines, according to current and former officials as well as experts, particularly with regard to testing.

The approach's chief proponent is Scott Atlas, a neuroradiologist from Stanford's conservative Hoover Institution, who joined the White House earlier this month as a pandemic adviser. He has advocated that the United States adopt the model Sweden has used to respond to the virus outbreak, according to these officials, which relies on lifting restrictions so the healthy can build up immunity to the disease rather than limiting social and business interactions to prevent the virus from spreading.

Sweden's handling of the pandemic has been heavily criticized by public health officials and infectious-disease experts as reckless - the country has among the highest infection and death rates in the world. It also hasn't escaped the deep economic problems resulting from the pandemic.

But Sweden's approach has gained support among some conservatives who argue that social distancing restrictions are crushing the economy and infringing on people's liberties.

That this approach is even being discussed inside the White House is drawing concern from experts inside and outside the government who note that a herd immunity strategy could lead to the country suffering hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lost lives.

"The administration faces some pretty serious hurdles in making this argument. One is a lot of people will die, even if you can protect people in nursing homes," said Paul Romer, a professor at New York University who won the Nobel Prize in economics in 2018. "Once it's out in the community, we've seen over and over again, it ends up spreading everywhere."

Atlas, who does not have a background in infectious diseases or epidemiology, has expanded his influence inside the White House by advocating policies that appeal to Trump's desire to move past the pandemic and get the economy going, distressing health officials on the White House coronavirus task force and throughout the administration who worry that their advice is being followed less and less.

Atlas declined an interview request. White House spokesman Judd Deere did not respond to specific questions for this story and instead said in a statement that Atlas is a "world renowned physician and scholar of advanced medical care and health care policy" and criticized the media for reporting on the topic.

White House officials said Trump has asked questions about herd immunity but has not formally embraced the strategy. The president, however, has made public comments that advocate a similar approach.

"We are aggressively sheltering those at highest risk, especially the elderly, while allowing lower-risk Americans to safely return to work and to school, and we want to see so many of those great states be open," he said during his address to the Republican National Convention Thursday night. "We want them to be open. They have to be open. They have to get back to work."

Atlas has fashioned himself as the "anti-Dr. Fauci," one senior administration official said, referring to Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious-disease official, who has repeatedly been at odds with the president over his public comments about the threat posed by the virus. He has clashed with Fauci as well as Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, over the administration's pandemic response.

Atlas has argued both internally and in public that an increased case count will move the nation more quickly to herd immunity and won't lead to more deaths if the vulnerable are protected. But infectious-disease experts strongly dispute that, noting that more than 25,000 people younger than 65 have died of the virus in the United States. In addition, the United States has a higher number of vulnerable people of all ages because of high rates of heart and lung disease and obesity, and millions of vulnerable people live outside nursing homes - many in the same households with children, whom Atlas believes should return to school.

Gulf of Mexico oil output down 70% following Laura, data shows

U.S. oil industry operators in the Gulf of Mexico are still reeling Monday from the recent passage of Hurricane Laura as output remains down 70%, according to government data.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said as of midday Sunday, personnel remain evacuated from 137 of the region’s 643 manned platforms. Their absence has caused an estimated 70% dip in crude oil production, amounting to around 1.29 million barrels per day, it added. “Once all standard checks have been completed, production from undamaged facilities will be brought back online immediately,” the Bureau said. “Facilities sustaining damage may take longer to bring back online.” The Bureau is also estimating that natural gas output in the Gulf of Mexico remains down 50%.

“As part of the evacuation process, personnel activate the applicable shut-in procedure, which can frequently be accomplished from a remote location,” it said. “This involves closing the sub-surface safety valves located below the surface of the ocean floor to prevent the release of oil or gas, effectively shutting in production from wells in the Gulf and protecting the marine and coastal environments."

Overall, facilities in the Gulf of Mexico account for 17% of America’s crude oil production and 5% of its natural gas production, according to Reuters. Laura made landfall last week along the Texas-Louisiana coast as a Category 4 hurricane, before weakening. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said the hurricane – which had top wind speeds of 150 mph – was the most powerful to ever hit the state. Gas prices nationally have risen as well, with a gallon now costing an average of $2.233, up from $2.189 a week ago, according to AAA.

Russia may be responsible for the deadly unrest in American cities, CNN host Dana Bash has implied during an interview with Democrat’s top Russiagate figure, Adam Schiff, proving that red-baiting never goes out of vogue.

Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, came to CNN for a round of Trump-bashing over the President’s remarks on how Director of National Intelligence (DNI) John Ratcliffe “got tired of” classified information being leaking from Congress. The DNI wrote last week to the California representative and his Senate counterpart, Marco Rubio, that his office will be informing lawmakers on election security through written reports rather than in-person briefings.

During the interview Schiff took time to denounce the President for what he described as an attempt to hide “the fact that the Russians are helping Donald Trump again” and declared that US intel “belongs to the American people”. With the election-meddling Ruskie bad guys introduced into the conversation, host Dana Bash mused on what other evil deeds they may be up to.

The Israeli flag carrier’s flight marks the implementation of the historic U.S.-brokered deal to normalize relations between the two nations

A Star of David-adorned El Al plane flew from Israel to the United Arab Emirates on Monday, carrying a high-ranking American and Israeli delegation to Abu Dhabi in the first-ever direct commercial passenger flight between the two countries. The Israeli flag carrier's flight marked the implementation of the historic U.S.-brokered deal to normalize relations between the two nations and solidifies the long-clandestine ties between them that have evolved over years of shared enmity toward Iran. With the U.S. as matchmaker, Israel and the UAE agreed earlier this month to work toward normalization, which would make the UAE the third Arab nation to have full relations with Israel, after Egypt and Jordan. Unlike those two nations, Israel has never fought a war against the UAE and hopes to have much-warmer relations.

The American delegation included President Donald Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as national security adviser Robert O'Brien, Mideast envoy Avi Berkowitz and envoy for Iran Brian Hook. Israel was represented by national security adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and the director generals of several ministries, who were to meet with their Emirati counterparts. Upon arrival, Kushner said he came with greetings from Trump. He called the visit "historic" and expressed hope this "will be the first of many" such flights. "On the plane we asked the pilots to fly faster because there is great urgency between the people of both countries to break down old barriers, to get to know each other, to form new and hopefully very deep friendships," he said. "While this peace was forged by its leaders, it's overwhelmingly desired by the people." State television in Abu Dhabi broke into its broadcast to show the airplane on the tarmac and aired the comments of all officials, including Ben-Shabbat.

The El Al flight, numbered LY971 as a gesture to the UAE's international calling code number, flew into Saudi Arabian airspace shortly after takeoff and later passed over the capital, Riyadh. That marked another historic first for Israel and at least an acquiescence by the kingdom for the UAE's move. "They were very gracious to allow us to fly over their airspace, which they've never done before, for an Israeli commercial plane. And so this, again, is another historic breakthrough," Kushner told reporters on the flight. He said he would be traveling to Saudi Arabia after the visit. Kushner and other officials have said they hope more Arab nations will follow the lead of the UAE in establishing ties with Israel, even without a peace agreement with the Palestinians. Saudi King Salman, along with other Gulf Arab leaders to varying degrees, maintain their boycotts of Israel in support of Palestinians obtaining an independent state. Any long-term flights between Israel and the UAE would require Saudi clearance to be profitable. Otherwise the three hour, 20 minute flight would have taken more than seven hours.

El Al spokesman Stanley Morais said the 737-900 is equipped with a missile-defense system, a standard feature on these types of planes and a requirement for this flight. After grounding its fleet due to the coronavirus, it is the airline's first flight since July 1. The plane was decorated with the the words for peace in Arabic, Hebrew and English above the pilot's window. Journalists were handed special face masks decorated with the Israeli and Emirati flags. The seat protectors said "Making History" in all three languages, and Israeli folk music played in the background. The plane's captain, Tal Becker, said he has not worked for several months and received a call out of the blue asking him to prepare for the flight. The 45-year veteran, who is the senior captain in El Al's 737 fleet, said he never dreamed of flying to Abu Dhabi, calling it a "very special feeling." The Israeli delegation will stay in the capital, Abu Dhabi, for one night before returning home on El Al flight LY972, a nod to Israel's international calling code.

Greece to Look Into Recent Drug Seizures in Evros Region, Reports Say

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Greece's anti-terror unit has launched an investigation into the recent seizures of the Captagon codrug, known as the Jihadi Pill, at the Greek-Turkish border in the Evros region, the Kathimerini newspaper reported on Monday.

According to the Greek news outlet, the police of Komotini and Alexandroupoli have seized 13,213 pills in six cases — five of them within forty days. The drugs are said to have been smuggled by illegal immigrants in their backpacks.

Police officials told Kathimerini that two Turkish cartels are responsible for drug and human trafficking in the region and they use methods similar to Mexican cartels, making people pay for crossing the border by working as mules.

As of 11:25 a.m., Musk was worth $111.3 billion compared with $110.5 billion for Zuckerberg. The table below shows the absolute net worth of the world's top 10 billionaires as of Friday's close. This morning, Musk's net worth has already rocketed by another $7 billion, putting him in the 3rd spot.

As Bloomberg notes, "Musk has seen a meteoric rise in his wealth, with his net worth growing by $76.1 billion this year as Tesla shares surged more than 475%. Also helpful: an audacious pay package - the largest corporate pay deal ever struck between a chief executive officer and a board of directors - that could yield him more than $50 billion if all goals are met."

What is remarkable is that it was only a few months ago that Musk joined the Top 10 club, and only last week did the Tesla CEO join Zuckerberg, Bezos and Bill Gates in the ultra exclusive centi-billionaire club as tech stocks surged.

Meanwhile, as the uber-rich get richer, the poor are not only getting poorer, but desperate for some action out of Congress to mitigate their fate as millions have found themselves without a job after the coronavirus shutdowns.

That said, Musk still has a long way to become the world’s richest person: to overtake Bezos, whose worth about $200 billion, TSLA stock would have to double from here, a move which at least some optimistic punters who have been aggressively buying TSLA $800 calls expiring Sept 4 all morning...

Four young violent leftists were sentenced last week on charges they created a road hazard as a stationary target. Then the young leftists hurled a chlorine bomb at the police officer when he stop to clear the road.

The young leftists were sentenced last week to 60 days in prison and probation for two years.

Sentencing was held on August 26, 2020 for three of four men convicted of throwing a chlorine bomb at an Arvada Police officer as he attempted to clear a road hazard. The hazard was built by the defendants to create a stationary target for their bombs.

On April 7, 2019 at 10:00 p.m., Arvada police received a call from a citizen regarding a road hazard at 72nd and Beech Street. The Officer arrived to find that street signs had been pulled out of ground and stacked in middle of the road, then plastic wrap had been strung across the road. The Officer and the citizen began to attempt to clear the road barricade when a plastic bottle was thrown and landed near the Officer. He overheard someone yell obscenities at him. When the bottle hit the ground it began releasing heavy chlorine gas. The Officer began coughing, became nauseous, lost consciousness, and fell to the ground. Other officers and paramedics arrived and the Officer was transported to the hospital.

They detonated at least seven additional incendiary devices in the area.

Arvada Police officers addressed the judge at the sentencing hearing, describing the impact this had on the officer, the entire department, and the community. During the immediate search for the offenders, a Code Red was issued for a one-mile radius in Arvada.

The officer suffered serious pulmonary damage and spent months going to medical appointments and missing work and continues to suffer the effects of the chlorine gas.

“These men set up an ambush for police. When the first Arvada officer arrived to clear away the road hazard, he was a fixed target for their toxic chemical bombs,” said DA Pete Weir, “These young men purchased the chemicals and plastic bottles at Walmart, mixed the bombs and then set up their targets for ambush. The impact on the law enforcement community has been enormous.”

Peace deal signed by Sudan & rebel groups after 17 years of conflict

The government of Sudan and an alliance of major rebel groups have signed a long-awaited peace agreement. It is hoped it will end the protracted armed conflict, which has claimed some 300,000 lives in the African nation.

The signing ceremony in Juba, the capital of neighboring South Sudan, took place on Monday, two days after the terms of the agreement were finalized. The host nation helped mediate the peace talks, which started last year.

The peace agreement covers major issues like security, land ownership, power sharing and rehoming of refugees. Some 2.5 million people have been displaced since the conflict between predominantly Arab government forces and non-Arab rebels in the western Darfur region erupted in 2003, according to the UN. An estimated 300,000 people have been killed during the fighting.

The rebel alliance, which signed the deal, includes groups from the South Kordofan and Blue Nile regions, which are tied to a larger civil war in Sudan. The provinces remained under Sudanese sovereignty when the non-Arab part of the country split in 2011 to form sovereign South Sudan.

The peace talks were made possible by the downfall of Sudan’s long-time strongman leader Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in April last year after staying in power for two decades. The transitional government made negotiations with the rebels one of its top priorities.

There were previous attempts to end the Sudanese conflict, with one peace accord signed in Nigeria in 2006 and another one in Qatar in 2010, both of which later collapsed.

Lebanese president designates Ambassador to Germany Mustapha Adib as new prime minister

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has designated Mustapha Adib as the new PM, tasking him with forming a new cabinet, after the previous government quit in the wake of the devastating explosion at the Beirut port.

Senior diplomat Adib was tapped as the new PM after he managed to secure the support of the majority in parliament. Adib has been Lebanese ambassador to Germany since July 2013, as well as an adviser to a former PM in the early 2010s.

Shortly after his designation, Adib called for the formation of a new government in record time, as well as for the immediate launch of reforms needed for an agreement for with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“The opportunity for our country is small,” Adib stressed.

The previous Lebanese government, led by Hassan Diab, resigned shortly after the devastating blast that rocked the port of the country’s capital on August 4. The explosion killed at least 190 people, injuring thousands more and caused widespread destruction across Beirut, while its port was effectively leveled. The explosion was caused by a massive haul of ammonium nitrate fertilizer that had been improperly stored at the port for years after it was seized from a cargo vessel.

Adib’s designation comes just a day ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit. Last week, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian issued a warning to Lebanon, stating it might “disappear” altogether if a new government is not formed immediately.

Paris has become increasingly involved in the political life of its former protectorate after the port blast, and it’s Macron's second visit to the country in less than a month. France’s president has rallied a host of donors ready to help Lebanon with the aftermath of the blast – if the country conducts all the reforms required by the international sponsors.

She's been detained and placed in secured isolation for an indeterminate amount of time.

"The Australian Government has been informed that an Australian citizen, Ms Cheng Lei, has been detained in China," the Australian government statement said. "Formal notification was received on 14th of August from Chinese authorities of her detention," it continued, though news of her detention is only now being reported via Australia's ABC.

"Australian officials had an initial consular visit with Ms Cheng at a detention facility via video link on 27th of August and will continue to provide assistance and support to her and her family," it continued.

It was friends and colleagues who first noticed she was "missing" as she didn't return messages over a period of weeks. She also hadn't appeared on her most recent show, CGTN’s Global Business, after long being one of its premier hosts.

Strongly suggesting that Lei could actually be under suspicion of spying or passing sensitive information to the Australian government, or other serious breach of her work for state-run CGTN, her employment profile page detailing eight years of accomplishments for CGTN has been taken down and all videos of her previous stories have been scrubbed.

Chinese authorities have indicated she's currently held in "residential surveillance at a designated location", ABC notes.

Another Australian citizen and news correspondent, Yang Hengjun, had previously been detained January 2019, and has reportedly yet to be provided access to his lawyers.

Louisiana Food Banks Overwhelmed As Recession And Hurricane Spikes Demand

Food banks were already under stress before Hurricane Laura devastated parts of southern Louisiana last week. Many of these charities, were providing meal assistance to hungry families affected by the virus-induced downturn in the economy. Now they must provide meals for people who have lost their homes because of the natural disaster.

"It's literally one crisis on top of another," Jay Vise, the director of communications and marketing of Second Harvest Food Bank, told 4WWL New Orleans, who referred to the increasing demand seen at his food bank.

"It's impossible for us to help everybody and that's what hurts the most, you meet someone that's been blown out of their home and living in a tent and they're so grateful and thankful for something that's been donated to us to give them a meal," Vise said.

The combination of depressionary unemployment and a natural disaster in the state could result in further food bank stress as they might have to choose between who gets fed and who doesn't.

UK Government Funds Sexual Acts Dice Game for 13-Year-Olds

A government-funded sex education “toolkit” including a game where children roll a ‘body parts’ dice and discuss sexual acts has raised concerns over the sexualisation of young people.

Produced by the Proud Trust, the toolkit has dice featuring words including “anus”, “vulva”, “penis”, “hands and fingers”, and “mouth”, and orders children to talk through the sexual activities it would be possible to carry out using two body parts.

In the pack, teachers are told “not all combinations will be easy to discuss and some might seem impossible”, but that “the aim is to get people talking and to limit assumptions about what kind of sex people have”, according to documents seen by The Times.

“Every combination is worthy of a conversation!” it claims.

An LGBT charity which claims to be a “life saving and life enhancing organisation”, the Proud Trust promotes the toolkit, titled Sexuality aGender v2 as designed for ages 13+ and “for use in secondary schools, colleges and other youth settings”.

On its website, the Proud Trust also boasts that the kit “is “a fully planned out and resourced four lesson/session pack” that helps schools meet their “statutory requirements to deliver LGBT+ inclusive RSE” (relationships and sex education).

Sexuality aGender v2 was produced after the so-called charity was handed £99,960 from the government’s Tampon Tax Fund, which is supposed to award the money collected from tax on women’s sanitary products to projects aimed at helping disadvantaged women and girls. The Times reported that the contents of the pack have raised concerns.

Speaking to the newspaper, a spokesman for Safe Schools Alliance, Tanya Carter, stated: “This ‘resource’ clearly breaches safeguarding. The tampon tax should be used to educate girls on their rights — not prematurely sexualise them.”

Tory peer Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne wrote to the education secretary, Gavin Williamson, noting that “while the [RSE] guidelines are quite good on what they do want, they do not prohibit anything and in consequence seem to be abused”.

“Abdicating responsibility to teachers only for them to abdicate it to minority interest lobby groups is surely unsatisfactory, unhealthy and unsafe,” she said, adding: “It is right for the state to ensure that certain bases are covered. An investigation into the toolkit by campaign group Transgender Trend in May revealed that “anal sex is a constant feature” of the pack, which “normalis[es] the practice” by noting a survey which found that just under one in five 16- to 25-year-olds said they had engaged in the activity in the last year.

The toolkit also demands that learners “use the phrase ‘a person with a vagina’ rather than ‘a woman’s vagina’ and ‘a person with a penis’ rather than a ‘man’s penis'” so as to be sensitive to the beliefs of transgender people, according to the investigation.

Breitbart London has previously reported on World Health Organization (WHO) and UN-produced ‘comprehensive sex education’ guidelines, which demand countries around the world promote transgender ideology, homosexual lifestyles, and “safe access to abortion”.

The material, which critics say sexualises children, also discusses the so-called sexual ‘rights’ of children, including that children under four should be given information about “early childhood masturbation” and “the right to explore gender identities”.

A temporary rule change intended to allow women to have an abortion as easily as possible during the coronavirus lockdown may never be repealed, meaning the ’emergency’ situation may, in fact, become permanent.

Britain is facing a major liberalisation of its abortion laws after a temporary change enacted to allow women to continue having abortions without seeing a medical professional during the coronavirus lockdown may never be repealed.

According to an ‘exclusive’ report by British tabloid The Sunday Mirror, later followed up by newspaper of record The Times, allowing the ordering of abortion tablets over the telephone during lockdown has been considered a “success”.

The paper said on Sunday that “home abortions for women up to 10 weeks pregnant are set to become permanent following their success during lockdown”. It added that the rules, as they stood before lockdown, that abortions should take place in a clinic after a discussion with a professional were merely “outdated”.

The report cited the comments of abortion provider company spokesman Clare Murphy, who said in support of not rolling back the change: “All evidence supports the continuation of this service as in the best interests of women. Early abortion care at home has been one of the few healthcare success stories of the pandemic.”

As Breitbart London reported in March, when abortion access was made easier, the temporary change was passed without recourse to parliament under the government’s emergency powers and was intended to last two years. It meant women who were within the first ten weeks of pregnancy could terminate at home after a telephone call.

At the time, a spokesman for the government confirmed the change would be temporary, and the move was criticised by pro-life educational and caring charity Life. A spokesman for the group said: “It is unconscionable that the government is contradicting their stance, yet again, to allow women to be taking both stages of the medical abortion at home. It is an absolute disgrace that the abortion lobby should take advantage of the terrible situation we find ourselves in, with COVID-19, to instigate the biggest change to the Abortion Act (1967) we’ve seen in years, without any public consultation.”

Some 200,608 abortions took place in 2018 in England and Wales. According to the Mirror’s figures, over 90,000 women had at-home abortions through the new ‘temporary’ lockdown period alone.

CA Opens Door for Reparations for Slavery, Wants Task Force To Decide Compensation

California lurched a giant step closer to paying reparations for slavery after the state’s Senate on Saturday gave near-final legislative approval to a proposal that sets up a task that will decide how to dole out the dough.

The vote on the bill was 33-3, according to Fox News.

The Senate fine-tuned pieces of the bill, which means that the Assembly, which passed it 56-5 in June, must vote on those changes to give the bill its final legislative approval.

The bill’s supporters blamed slavery for the plight of modern black Americans.

“Let’s be clear: Chattel slavery, both in California and across our nation, birthed a legacy of racial harm and inequity that continues to impact the conditions of black life in California,” Democratic state Sen. Holly Mitchell of Los Angeles, said.

“I hear far too many people say, ‘Well, I didn’t own slaves, that was so long ago.’ Well, you inherit wealth — you can inherit the debt that you owe to African-Americans,” Democratic state Sen. Steven Bradford, of Gardena, said.

Democratic Assemblywoman Shirley Weber has said the reparations legislation was necessary despite the fact that California entered the U.S. in 1850 as a free state — where slavery was illegal.

“The discriminatory practices of the past echo into the everyday lives of today’s Californians,” said Weber, leader of the Legislative Black Caucus, according to KOVR-TV.

“This country has taught itself to hate African Americans and to deny the history that has brought us here,” she said in June while pushing the bill through the Assembly, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Lisa Holder, an attorney who teaches civil rights at UCLA School of Law, said the issue of reparations should be linked to discrimination and not slavery.

“The response really has to be framed around the issue of continuing racial injustice that started back in 1619 when Africans were stolen from Africa and brought here as enslaved people,” Holder said according to KPIX-TV.

“Then you don’t get into this messy, unintelligible notion of who is directly linked to a slave,” she said.

The bill states that reparations will be aimed at “African-Americans with special consideration for African-Americans who are descendants of persons enslaved.”

The legislation wants the University of California “to assemble a colloquium of scholars to draft a research proposal to analyze the economic benefits of slavery that accrued to owners and the businesses, including insurance companies and their subsidiaries, that received those benefits, and to make recommendations to the Legislature regarding those findings.”

The bill said that the Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans, which must be convened by Gov. Gavin Newsom no later than July 1, 2021. It will be made up of nine members, five appointed by the governor and two each appointed by the state Assembly speaker and the Senate president pro tempore. At least two of the members must have a history of supporting reparations.

According to the legislation, “As a result of the historic and continued discrimination, African Americans continue to suffer debilitating economic, educational, and health hardships” which include the presence of black Americans in jail, high black unemployment and high black poverty.

The committee will base its call for reparations on “the lingering negative effects of the institution of slavery and the discrimination … on living African Americans and on society in California and the United States,” according to the bill, and “The manner in which instructional resources and technologies are being used to deny the inhumanity of slavery and the crime against humanity of people of African descent in California and the United States.”

The study will also assess “How the State of California will offer a formal apology on behalf of the people of California for the perpetration of gross human rights violations and crimes against humanity on African slaves and their descendants,” according to the bill, and “How California laws and policies that continue to disproportionately and negatively affect African Americans as a group and perpetuate the lingering material and psychosocial effects of slavery can be eliminated.”

The panel will be charged with determining how compensation is to be calculated and awarded.

Thailand shelves Chinese submarine deal after public backlash

BANGKOK – Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has delayed the purchase of China-made military submarines for a year after public opposition sparked a reversal of a controversial funding decision. The Royal Thai Navy asked the parliament's budget committee Monday to cut the submarine procurement funding to zero for this fiscal year, a person familiar with the matter said. Government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri earlier on Monday said Prayuth, who concurrently serves as defense minister, had told the navy to postpone the deal until fiscal year 2022. The decision marks a setback for Prayuth's government amid a wave of youth protests seeking political reforms and greater protections for civil liberties.

The two Yuan-class S26T submarines were supposed to cost a total of 22.5 billion baht ($720 million) over seven years. The government sought to allocate more than 3 billion baht as the initial payment in the 2021 budget, but the move met with a strong backlash from the public, with critics saying the money should be spent on support for the slumping economy. Thailand will start negotiations with China on the details of the delay, Anucha said. These are the second and third of three submarines Prayuth promised the Royal Thai Navy and China while he was leader of a junta that toppled Thailand's democratically elected government in 2014. The budget for the first submarine was approved in 2017. It is being built in China for delivery in 2024, according to the navy. The deal attracted public attention, passing a lower house budget subcommittee on Aug. 22 by the narrowest margin. The meeting could not come to unanimous conclusion and was initially tied at 4 to 4, but a ballot from the chairman, a member of the ruling Palang Pracharat Party, allowed the deal to advance to the full budget committee. Yutthapong Jarassathian, deputy chairman of the subcommittee from the opposition Pheu Thai Party, was among the four members who opposed the decision. A memorandum of understanding exchanged upon the first submarine order between Prayuth and then-Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan did not state that Thailand was obliged to buy the two additional submarines, Yutthapong said. "The prime minister must choose between the submarines and the economic survival of the people," he said.

The subcommittee decision drew criticism online, with a hashtag #PeopleSayNoToSubs trending in Thailand on Twitter. The navy was forced to present its view on Monday. Royal Thai Navy chief-of-staff Sittiporn Maskasem said the navy needed more submarines as part of its defense strategy. He urged the public not to politicize the deal. Most of Thailand's coastal neighbors in Southeast Asia own submarines. Vietnam operates the largest fleet in the region with six subs. Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia hold five, four and two, respectively. Myanmar, a far smaller economy than Thailand, has one, according to the navy.

New DARPA Chief Is 2nd Woman To Lead Pentagon’s Secretive Research Arm

Dr. Victoria Coleman, an artificial intelligence and microelectronics specialist, has been named director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Pentagon’s secretive research arm.

Coleman will be the second woman to head DARPA since its creation in 1958, following Regina Dugan, who served as DARPA director from July 2009 until March 2012.

Coleman had been serving as chief executive officer of Atlas AI, which offers what it calls “cutting-edge artificial intelligence” to analyze trends in developing countries.

n announcing the appointment Monday, Michael Kratsios, acting under secretary of defense for Research and Engineering, said that the Defense Department was looking forward to having Coleman build upon “DARPA’s unmatched record of achievement.”

He noted that Coleman’s career spans over 30 years in academia, the private sector and government, including previous service as the founding chair of DARPA’s Microsystems Exploratory Council and membership on the Defense Science Board.

“During this era of great power competition, DARPA is critical to strengthening the U.S. military’s technological dominance and advancing innovations that benefit our warfighters,” Kratsios said.

Coleman’s appointment will allow Dr. Peter Highnam, who had been serving as acting DARPA director, to return to his previous position as DARPA deputy director.

DARPA’s mission, as defined by DoD, is to “anticipate, explore, and achieve the concepts and technology on which the nation’s future deterrent and defense capabilities depend.”

DARPA did foundational work in the creation of the Internet and in recent years has put emphasis on the uses of artificial intelligence in warfare.

Earlier this month, DARPA sponsored an “AphaDogfight” challenge for eight companies that pitted their AI-powered simulated aircraft against each other.

Heron Systems of Maryland won that faceoff and then used its algorithms to defeat an actual F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot "in five straight simulated dogfights in the man-vs-machine finale," DARPA officials said.
