U.S. Mulls Repercussions for Europe’s Alliance With Iran

After Europe breaks with U.S. on Iran arms ban, diplomatic ties hit historic low

Multiple European nations' diplomatic priorities may be on the line as the Trump administration examines a range of options to pressure these countries after their refusal to back the United States in its efforts to expand sanctions on Iran, according to current and former U.S. officials.

U.S. diplomats are seeking to force European allies to split with Iran and its allies, Russia and China. Multiple sources who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon outlined a range of European priorities the administration could leverage in this pressure campaign, including a free trade agreement sought by the British, increased coordination on Lebanon needed by the French, and a range of items the Germans have sought to revive ties with America. These sources spoke only on background about ongoing discussions in the administration about how to respond to Europe's intransigence on Iran.

Relations between the United States and its European allies are at historic lows following a failed vote at the United Nations Security Council earlier this month to indefinitely extend a ban on Iran's purchase of advanced weaponry. With the embargo set to lift in mid-October, the administration is now pushing to reimpose all sanctions on Tehran that were lifted under the nuclear deal—an effort that traditional allies France, Germany, and the United Kingdom publicly oppose. These European nations joined with Russia and China in opposing the United States.

Senior U.S. officials told the Free Beacon earlier this month that they are livid with Europe for abandoning America as it sought to extend the Iran weapons ban. The dispute spilled into public view on Tuesday, when U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Kelly Craft accused European allies of "standing in the company of terrorists." The administration shows no signs of backing down from the diplomatic fight, which is likely to elevate foreign policy issues in the lead up to the 2020 presidential election. U.S. ties to Europe have chilled in recent years due to the Trump administration's bid to pressure NATO allies into paying a greater share of the alliance's costs.

"The Europeans are clearly upset with the Americans for leaving the [Iran nuclear deal], but that doesn't seem like a good enough reason to essentially greenlight an influx of weapons to Iran," one U.S. diplomat familiar with discussions at the U.N. told the Free Beacon. "That's got to be quite difficult to explain to their citizens."

Trump administration allies in Congress remain angry with Europe and acknowledge that relations with the United States could crumble over the Iran dispute.

A spokesman for Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas), an Iran hawk, said "the fecklessness shown over the last few weeks by Britain, France, and Germany will obviously and unfortunately complicate our relations."

"Sen. Cruz believes that America's allies should stand with us and not with Iran's regime that chants ‘death to America' and wants to build nuclear weapons to incinerate American cities," the spokesman said.

Chronicles Of Ceasefire: Drugs At Frontline And Clouds Over Party Of War

Pro-Kiev forces have been hitting fresh highs of the degradation amid the ceasefire in the region of Donbass in eastern Ukraine.

The ceasefire between the Kiev regime and self-defense forces of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) officially stated on June 27 and as of July 27 it mostly remained in force in the region. The sides regularly accuse each other of ceasefire violations and pro-Kiev and DPR/LPR forces even suffer casualties. In aprticular, units loyal to the Kiev regime recently suffered several casualties as a result of mine explosions during failed raids in the ‘gray zone’ near positions of the DPR and the LPR. However, the intensity of artillery strikes and regular firefights on the contact line significantly decreased. Small arms and small-calibre mortars are still actively employed.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Army and illegal armed groups loyal to Kiev (but barely controlled by the Zelensky administration) have been contributing extensive efforts to strengthen their fortifications on the frontline. DPR and LPR militias respond in a similar manner.

According to interviews of Ukrainian servicemen surfacing online, the decrease of tensions also negatively impacted the already low moral level of pro-Kiev forces. Earlier, there were multiple reports about the usage of alcohol, drugs, the lack of discipline, the open participation in organized crime and the intentional terror against local population by pro-Kiev units. The Zelensky administration and the military leadership of Ukraine failed to exploit the ceasefire to deal with these problems.

“The regular army should not sit idle because the moral decay begins. I still keep my battalion in my fist, but our neighbors have already started a mess – the fighters began to drink alcohol due to idleness, they even smoke weed at watch. Therefore, you need to send them to fight or to the rear. Contractors like the situation that they don’t shoot. But the personnel have changed dramatically over the past two years. Most of the contractors are zarobitchane (hint: a local word for Ukrainian migrant workers). They came from remote villages to earn money. Of course, they are calmer when it’s safe and the money is paid,” Strana.ua quotes a lieutenant-colonel, Sergey, deployed in the combat zone.

The lack of the constant threat of a military escalation (for years, intentionally fueled by Kiev) also removed the cover from apparent negative tendencies in the Ukrainian society. The political, social and economic crisis becomes obvious when the population is no more distracted by the never-ending “war with Russia” (Russia did not come to fight). On August 25, the extraordinary session of the Ukrainian Parliament approved the EU Credit Memorandum under which the country surrendered the vestiges of its sovereignty to foreign actors in exchange for the new loan (600,000 EUR + 600,000 EUR if all demands are met). Aubrey Huff, who spent 13 years in the major leagues as an infielder and outfielder, and played for the Detroit Tigers in 2009, called Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, a "national treasure" in a tweet posted Wednesday night.

Rittenhouse faces murder charges in connection with the shooting death of two men in Kenosha, Wisc., during protests Tuesday. The protests were triggered by the police shooting Sunday night of Jacob Blake, who is now partially paralyzed.

Huff, 43, followed up with a series of tweets criticizing protesters, professional athletes supporting the protests, and referring to Blake as a criminal. The response on socially media was quite mixed.

U.S. Marshals Find DOZENS of Missing Children in Georgia

Washington, DC – The U.S. Marshals Service Missing Child Unit, in conjunction with the agency’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Georgia state and local agencies, led a two-week operation in August in Atlanta and Macon, Georgia, to rescue endangered missing children.

“Operation Not Forgotten” resulted in the rescue of 26 children, the safe location of 13 children and the arrest of nine criminal associates. Additionally, investigators cleared 26 arrest warrants and filed additional charges for alleged crimes related to sex trafficking, parental kidnapping, registered sex offender violations, drugs and weapons possession, and custodial interference. The 26 warrants cleared included 19 arrest warrants for a total of nine individuals arrested, some of whom had multiple warrants.

The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 enhanced the U.S. Marshals’ authority to assist federal, state, and local law enforcement with the recovery of missing, endangered or abducted children, regardless of whether a fugitive or sex offender was involved. The Marshals established a Missing Child Unit to oversee and manage the implementation of its enhanced authority under the act.

In 2019, the USMS helped recover 295 missing children based on requests for assistance from law enforcement and has contributed to the recovery of a missing child in 75 percent of cases received. Additionally, of the missing children recovered, 66 percent were recovered within seven days of the USMS assisting with the case. Since its partnership with NCMEC began in 2005, the agency has recovered more than 1,800 missing children.

“When we track down fugitives, it’s a good feeling to know that we’re putting the bad guy behind bars. But that sense of accomplishment is nothing compared to finding a missing child,” said Darby Kirby, Chief of the Missing Child Unit. “It’s hard to put into words what we feel when we rescue a missing child, but I can tell you that this operation has impacted every single one of us out here. We are working to protect them and get them the help they need.”

This initiative was the culmination of several months of planning and coordination between the USMS, NCMEC, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Office of the Attorney General, Georgia Department of Family and Children Services, Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Trump to announce $750M deal for 150M Abbott rapid coronavirus tests

President Trump plans to announce Thursday the purchase of at least 150 million rapid coronavirus tests from Abbott Laboratories for $750 million. “This is a major development that will help our country to remain open, get Americans back to work, and kids back to school," White House communications director Alyssa Farah told CNBC. "The Trump administration is proud to partner with Abbott labs to make this purchase possible to help the American people."

Trump will use his speech at the Republican National Convention Thursday night to announce the deal just one day after Abbott received Food and Drug Administration approval for a portable COVID-19 test. The test kit is about the size of a credit card and can produce results in 15 minutes. Abbott stated that the test is more than 97% accurate in diagnosing positive and negative cases. The test will sell for about $5. Abbott announced Wednesday that it will "ship tens of millions of tests in September, ramping production to 50 million tests a month in October." The test could be a serious breakthrough as most COVID-19 tests must be analyzed by laboratories. Many labs have testing backlogs of up to two weeks, meaning people will wait several days for results and could potentially transmit the virus to others in that time. The test is only approved for use "within the first seven days of symptom onset" to be administered by a healthcare provider, meaning it is not authorized to test asymptomatic people.

Third Point LLC, a hedge fund led by billionaire investor Daniel Loeb, has shed all its investments in Sony Corp’s

The fund owned 1.5 million Sony ADRs at the end of December, valued at $100 million. These holdings fell to 675,000 at March-end and ceased to exist at end-June, according to Reuters.

Fast Moving Hurricane Laura Moves Inland – 670,000+ Without Power…

Laura made landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border overnight (Cameron, LA) as a Cat-4 hurricane with a maximum sustained wind speed of 150 mph. At least 670,000+ residents in Louisiana and Texas are without power as of Thursday afternoon as officials worked to recover in the wake of coastal storm surges and destructive flash flooding. Louisiana has the bulk of the outages with 554,000, while Texas reports around 138,000.

North Korea’s state news agency has released new photos of Kim Jong Un amid reports he’s been in a coma for months and ceded some power to his sister. The pics appear to show a healthy-looking Kim leading a meeting on Tuesday of the politburo of the Workers Party to call for prevention efforts against the coronavirus and a typhoon, according to the Korean Central News Agency. They were syndicated through the Associated Press, which noted that independent journalists weren’t given access to the event and that the images couldn’t be independently verified. The meeting assessed “some defects in the state emergency anti-epidemic work for checking the inroads of the malignant virus,” KCNA said in a statement.

North Korea hasn’t reported any confirmed cases of COVID-19 but Kim said last month that the virus “could be said to have entered” the country and issued a lockdown after a man was reported to have symptoms. Test results on the man were inconclusive, according to the World Health Organization. The meeting also discussed state emergency measures on preventing crop damage and casualties from Typhoon Bavi, which is expected to wallop the country within days. North Korea’s economy has taken a hit from recent border closures and flood damage. Speculation has long swirled about Kim’s health — with a former aide claiming this week that the despot fell into a coma months ago following a botched heart operation and that his subsequent public appearances were previously recorded. The aide said Kim’s younger sister Kim Yo Jong was poised to help lead the country. Earlier this month, state-sanctioned photos showed Kim arriving in a luxury SUV to tour a North Korean village that was devastated by flooding.

Trump Says Can Send Much Bigger National Guard Force to Wisconsin if Necessary

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he is ready to deploy far more US National Guard soldiers to the state of Wisconsin if needed to restore order amid unrest in the wake of the Jacob Blake shooting.

“We called up the National Guard. We sent them out and they did a fantastic job last night. We had virtually no incident," Trump said. “So, it went very, very smooth. We had a relatively small force. We can be much larger. If necessary, we’ll move a much larger force there, but we didn’t need too much and it worked out very well in Wisconsin.”

Trump said he appreciated the fact that the governor of Wisconsin had requested federal help with local protests, and said the city of Portland should do the same thing.

The president added that if any cities have problems and request the help of the National Guard, he will deploy forces immediately.

“We will put out the fire, we will put out the flame. We will put out the vandalism,” he said. “All they have to do is call ... We’ll have the National Guard there and we will stop the violence very quickly.”

Blake, 29, was shot in the back by police in front of his children on Sunday in the Wisconsin city of Kenosha while he was reportedly trying to break up a fight between two women. Blake's father said the man had been shot seven times, which left him paralyzed from the waist down.

The incident ignited a new wave of protests against police brutality and racial discrimination in the United States, which initially started with the killing of another African American man, George Floyd, in police custody on 25 May. The city of Portland has witnessed nightly protests for the last three months.

Religious leaders have raised ethical doubts over one of Australia's primary coronavirus vaccine hopes because scientists have used foetal cells in its development.

Developers at Oxford University and pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca are using cell lines from an electively aborted foetus in the vaccine candidate, with Anglican, Catholic and Greek Orthodox leaders questioning the practice.

But using foetal cells in vaccine development isn't new — and the Catholic Church has previously expressed qualified support for the use of vaccines derived from these cells under certain circumstances.

We spoke to Bill Lott, a virologist at QUT's Institute of Health and biomedical innovation, to understand the role of foetal cells in vaccine development.

Once again, media outlets reveal Israeli cooperation with Gulf countries in the field of espionage and the sale of special capabilities and expertise that will help Gulf governments track down dissidents. The Israeli NSO company in question is also mentioned in a very important and sensitive topic related to its advanced spyware, “Pegasus,” which enables penetration of mobile phones.

This time, the Hebrew newspaper, Haaretz, discussed the issue of Israeli-Gulf cooperation in terms of espionage, stating that the NSO company recently sold programs to opponents like the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf countries. According to what the newspaper on Sunday, deals, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, were carried out through official mediation.

The report came to confirm that the Emirati normalization with Israel was an inevitable result of deep and sensitive cooperation between them.

What is NSO?

An Israeli technology company focuses on electronic intelligence. At the top of its services are to spy on and penetrate mobile phones, and to steal their data. It is founded in 2010 by Neve Carmi, Omri Lavie, and Shalev Hulio, and has about 500 employees at its headquarters in Herzliya near Tel Aviv. Its annual revenue reached about $40 million in 2013 and increased to $150 million by 2015. In June 2017, its owner, Francisco Partners Management, put it up for sale for one billion dollars and the deal completed in 2019.

NSO services are all over the world and deals with many governments, but its name has been associated with countries accused of widespread human rights violations, such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. It sold an old version of its program to the Mexico government in 2012 in order to combat drug trafficking gangs there. However, The New York Times said in 2016, that the authorities used the program to spy on opposed journalists and lawyers.

The New York Times reported that UAE bought programs that helped it eavesdrop on the leaders of neighboring countries and the editor of an Arab newspaper in the British capital. The Israeli government treats its products like any arms exporting company. It requires it to obtain a permit from the Ministry of Defense (the Ministry of War) to export any of its products abroad.

The company claims to provide technical support to the world’s governments in order to help them fight terrorism and crime. However, international human rights organizations accuse it of designing and developing programs used in hacking and espionage operations against human rights activists and journalists in many countries.

US Is Willing to Dismantle the UN Security Council to Put Pressure on Iran

In a world where American exceptionalism and unilateralism has become common currency, the brazenness of Secretary of State Pompeo’s bid to impose “snap back” inspections of Iran takes the cake. Moreover, it’s doomed to fail.

When it comes to Iran and the Iran nuclear deal (formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA), President Trump has been singularly focused on one outcome–to bring the Islamic Republic back to the negotiation table for the purpose of producing a “better deal” than the one done by his predecessor, Barack Obama, in July 2015. For the former New York realtor and reality television star-turned Chief Executive, it does not get any simpler than that–he is, after all, the consummate (if self-proclaimed) “deal maker.” How the deal is made, and even what constitutes the deal, is less important than the deal itself. This goal dominated his thinking about Iran as a candidate and continues to do so as President.

The precipitous decision to withdraw from the JCPOA in May 2018 was driven more by the perceived need to begin shaping the diplomatic battlefield in support of a new negotiation than any legitimate national security concerns. Trump’s goal all along has been to compel Iran, through the implementation of economic sanctions combined with political isolation, to scrap the Obama-era JCPOA and sit down with the new American “deal maker” to craft a “big deal” that would make everyone happy.

America versus the world

The problem from the start, however, was that the United States was alone with its displeasure over how the deal was being implemented. Among the other parties to the JCPOA (France, Great Britain, Germany, the EU, Russia, China and Iran), the agreement was proving its viability by preventing Iran from engaging in any “breakout” actions that could result in Iran obtaining enough fissile material from its centrifuge-based uranium enrichment program to build a nuclear device. Trump, however, had latched on to the so-called “sunset clauses” of the JCPOA, which lifted restrictions on Iran’s use of centrifuges after a period of several years, allowing Iran to blow-past the hypothetical calculations regarding nuclear “breakout,” and thereby mooting the fundamental purpose of the JCPOA to begin with.

The US decision to unilaterally withdraw from the JCPOA has proven to be an unmitigated policy disaster, one that has empowered Iran, Russia and China as the “aggrieved parties,” and driven a wedge between the US and its European allies. Rather than admit defeat and help restore the status quo by re-entering the JCPOA, the Trump administration has instead opted to double down, threatening to reimpose UN sanctions which had been suspended upon Iran’s entry into the JCPOA via procedural mechanisms contained in the body of that agreement calling for the “snap back” of sanctions if any party is dissatisfied with the compliance of another. The real purpose of the US gambit to reimpose “snap back” inspections wasn’t any malfeasance on the part of Iran’s nuclear program, but rather a desire to prevent the automatic lifting of an arms embargo that had been spelled out in the body of the JCPOA. This embargo was scheduled to automatically terminate come October 2020.

The US sought to pressure the Security Council into passing a resolution which would permanently extend this embargo. Both Russia and China had promised to veto, so the resolution’s defeat was inevitable. The goal in pushing for it, however, was to persuade at least nine other members of the 15-member body to vote in favor, thereby providing the US with the moral high ground when approaching the Security Council about re-imposing “snap back” sanctions. Most of the other members of the Security Council, recognizing that if they intervened to reverse a clause mandated by the JCPOA, they would put Iran’s continued participation in the agreement at risk, instead abstained from voting on the resolution. Only the Dominican Republic sided with the US; Russia and China, as expected, cast their vetoes.

WHO Skips Wuhan During China Trip; "Sat In Beijing For Three Weeks"

A delegation from the World Health Organization tasked with investigating the origins of COVID-19 failed to go to Wuhan, China - 'ground zero' for the pandemic, and instead "sat in Beijing for three weeks" according to a senior US official, who told the Financial Times that Western governments are skeptical over China's commitment to identifying the origins of the pandemic.

"Any chance of finding a smoking gun is now gone," the official continued. Though we're not sure what any team of investigators would find after China blocked international epidemiologists for eight months after the outbreak began.

Australian MP Dave Sharma told the Times: "The international community is right to have serious concerns about the rigour and independence of the WHO’s early response to this pandemic, and its seeming wish to avoid offending China.

"If this allegation is proven, it is another disturbing incident of the WHO — which is charged with safeguarding global public health — putting the political sensitivities of a member state above the public health interests of the world, in the critical early stages of this pandemic. We are all now bearing the immense costs of such a policy."

R. Kelly has been placed in solitary confinement following a jailhouse beatdown from another inmate because it’s the only place he’s safe, the disgraced artist’s lawyer told The Post Thursday. “That’s the only place they can protect him,” said Steven Greenberg, Kelly’s Chicago-based attorney. Sometime Wednesday, a disgruntled inmate, furious over lockdowns caused by Kelly, came into his cell and started attacking him, Greenberg said. “My understanding is, everytime there is a pro-R. Kelly protest outside of the jail, they lock down the entire facility,” the lawyer said during a brief interview. “When they do this, inmates don’t get their commissary, they don’t get their shower, stuff like that and since they’re fairly sporadic anyway, they get upset. So they’re penalizing everyone in the facility because people are protesting in support of Kelly.”

The attorney characterized the attack as a mere “dust up” and said there were “minor injuries, nothing broken” but that’s only because guards were able to quickly snuff it out. “I’m still very concerned because sure this time the guards were able to quickly stop something from happening but what happens if someone goes in his cell with a shank or something like that? Or the guards are busy doing something else?” Greenberg said. “We were fortunate this time but who’s to say next time?” Kelly is awaiting trial on a series of child sex abuse charges and has repeatedly petitioned the courts to release him amid the coronavirus pandemic but those requests have all been rejected.

The U.S. Space Force was all ready to move ahead with announcing a rank structure – until lawmakers stepped in, according to the newest military branch's top enlisted adviser.

Chief Master Sgt. Roger Towberman on Wednesday said that an amendment proposed by Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, that would require the service to use Navy ranks, stalled the sixth's military branch's plans to roll out a personnel structure

"So we've got to let that law, that legal system play out, and until it plays out, there's really no point right moving forward," Towberman said during a Q&A segment during the Air Force Sergeants' virtual symposium.

Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL who was medically retired as a lieutenant commander, proposed an amendment in the House version of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, requiring "the same system and rank structure as is used in the Navy," for the Space Force according to a summary of the text. The House and Senate have passed their versions of the NDAA, and the chambers will meet to iron out the differences after the August recess.

"I'm ready to be a master chief if that's what the law says I'll be; we're ready to pivot and do something else if we're asked to do something else," Towberman said.

Towberman continued, "I know that that's frustrating to folks, we really would have preferred to have an answer by now. We're going to [start] bringing airmen in on Sept. 1, and for those junior grades in particular, it means they're still going to be called 'airman' even though they're in the Space Force, because we just don't have any other options right now."

The Space Force on Thursday announced Towberman, currently the command senior enlisted leader to both the Space Force and U.S. Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, will no longer wear both hats; Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Scott Stalker will become the SPACECOM adviser, according to a release.

Experts have argued that a Navy rank system would make sense for the fledgling Space Force.

"A good reason to use Navy ranks in the Space Force is to better distinguish [Space Force] personnel from Air Force personnel, kind of like [the Marine Corps] using different ranks than the Navy," Todd Harrison, director of the Aerospace Security Project at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, said last month via Twitter.

Senior Liberal MP denounces 'totalitarian' Chinese rule on secret tape

Liberal Party elder and former defence minister Kevin Andrews has launched a savage attack on the Chinese government in a private party forum, saying President Xi Jinping was running "the most complete totalitarian regime that we've seen probably on the face of this earth".

In what are among the most unguarded comments yet about China by an Australian government MP, Mr Andrews, who chairs the human rights sub-committee of Australia's joint standing committee on foreign affairs, defence and trade, accused the "regime of Xi Jinping" of "trampling on human dignity, on human rights in China".

He said China had an "egregious" human rights record in Hong Kong and its troubled western province of Xinjiang, and had displayed "bellicose nationalism from President Xi Jinping" in the South China Sea. He accused the Victorian government of "adding propaganda value" to the Chinese Communist Party by signing up to its contentious Belt and Road Initiative.

Mr Andrews made his comments on August 13 in an online forum alongside embattled cabinet minister Michael Sukkar as the pair tried to encourage members of Christian church networks to sign up new Liberal Party members to stave off a preselection challenge in Mr Andrews' seat of Menzies.

Asked by one participant on the call if Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews had committed "high treason" with his Belt and Road Initiative agreement with China, Kevin Andrews said: "If we don't stand up to it now, it's going to do a lot more damage to the people of China and to the rest of the world."

The comments, which were recorded and obtained by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, come as Prime Minister Scott Morrison also stepped up his pressure on China, saying the Foreign Affairs Minister would from now on assert the foreign affairs power in the constitution and review relationships between China and all state, territory and local governments and universities. Proposed agreements would be vetted to see if they contradicted Australia's national interest.

Minister accuses foreign governments of exploiting 'proud Australians'

Foreign governments are meddling in multicultural communities, harassing and exploiting "proud Australians" to further their own causes, according to Australia's Immigration Minister.

Alan Tudge will use his speech to the National Press Club today to raise his concern about the reach of foreign governments in Australia.

"Members of our diverse communities have been both victims of interference and used as vectors to engage in foreign interference," he will say.

"Despite now being proud Australians, some communities are still seen by their former home countries as 'their diaspora' — to be harassed or exploited to further the national cause."

The Minister doesn't name the countries responsible for this harassment.

But the ABC has been told that the Federal Government is increasingly concerned about the way the Chinese Government has been trying to consolidate its political influence in the Chinese-Australian community.

Australian security officials have also observed the way the Chinese Government has intensified monitoring and intimidation of some Chinese students and political dissidents.

They remain concerned about the hold the Chinese Communist Party has on many Chinese-language media outlets in Australia.

It is not just China, with officials also monitoring political intimidation and harassment in the Cambodian-Australian community, among others.
