President Trump dined on ice cream as news of the airstrike broke

As news broke that the US struck and killed Qasem Soleimani, President Trump was dining at his Mar-a-Lago club, surrounded by old friends and others like House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

As meatloaf and ice cream were served, the Pentagon confirmed that the US was behind the strikes, the only statement from the administration throughout the night.

Putting this airstrike in perspective: The scene Friday was similar to the one after Trump gave the order for American forces to carry out the missile strike on a Syrian airfield in the spring 2017.

After that strike, Trump went into great detail about the chocolate cake he had with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who was there for a summit, when he informed him about the series of tomahawk missiles.

"I said, Mr. President, let me explain something to you — this was during dessert,” Trump said at the time. “We’ve just fired 59 missiles, all of which hit, by the way, unbelievable, from, you know, hundreds of miles away, all of which hit, amazing. Brilliant. It’s so incredible. It’s brilliant. It’s genius.”

"He was eating his cake and he was silent," the President added.

Trump later described it as "the most beautiful piece of chocolate cake that you’ve ever seen—and President Xi was enjoying it.”

New York Times op-ed made eerie hypothetical about Soleimani being killed in Baghdad hours before it happened

The New York Times published an eerie opinion piece on Thursday that used a potential attack on Iranian Gen. Qassem SoleimanI as a hypothetical scenario hours before the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' elite Quds Force was actually killed in remarkably similar fashion.

The op-ed, “Hypersonic Missiles Are a Game Changer,” by Quincy Institute analyst and former National Security Council senior director Steve Simon, examined the potential of the powerful weapons. But an example used in the 11th paragraph is sure to have conspiracy theorists buzzing.

“Is there an individual in an unfriendly country who cannot be apprehended? What if the former commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Qassem Soleimani, visits Baghdad for a meeting and you know the address? The temptations to use hypersonic missiles will be many,” Simon wrote.

Hours after the op-ed was published, the Pentagon confirmed that Soleimani was killed in a U.S.-led airstrike at Baghdad International Airport.

The New York Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Fed Just Monetized $6.4 Billion In Debt Sold Earlier This Week

Yesterday, when looking at the details of the Fed's ongoing QE4, we pointed out that the New York Fed was now actively purchasing T-Bills that had been issued just days earlier by the US Treasury, and which settled the day of the permanent open market operation, or POMO.

As a reminder, the Fed is prohibited from directly purchasing Treasurys at auction, as that is considered "monetization" and directly funding the US deficit, not to mention is tantamount to "Helicopter Money" and is frowned upon by Congress and established economists. However, insert a brief, 3-days interval between issuance and purchase... and suddenly nobody minds. As we summarized:

"for those saying the US may soon unleash helicopter money, and/or MMT, we have some 'news': helicopter money is already here, and the Fed is now actively monetizing debt the Treasury sold just days earlier using Dealers as a conduit... a "conduit" which is generously rewarded by the Fed's market desk with its marked up purchase price. In other words, the Fed is already conducting Helicopter Money (and MMT) in all but name. As shown above, the Fed monetized T-Bills that were issued just three days earlier - and just because it is circumventing the one hurdle that prevents it from directly purchasing securities sold outright by the Treasury, the Fed is providing the Dealers that made this legal debt circle-jerk possible with millions in profits, even as the outcome is identical if merely offset by a few days"

So fast forward to today, when the Fed conducted its latest T-Bill POMO in which, as has been the case since early October, the NY Fed's market desk purchased the maximum allowed in Bills, some $7.5 billion, out of $21.9 billion in submissions. What was far more notable, were the actual CUSIPs that were accepted by the Fed for purchase. And here, once again, we find two particular issues that stick out: UB3 (due July 2, 2020) which was the most active CUSIP, with $5.245BN purchased by the Fed, and TM1 (due April 2, 2020) of which $1.2BN was accepted.

“The intelligence was that Soleimani was orchestrating chaos in Iraq at our expense and throughout the region,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R-SC), on “Fox & Friends” on Friday.

“The president was informed of these potential attacks and he acted. This was a defensive strike to neutralize future attacks that were planned and executed by Soleimani and the popular mobilization front: the Shiite militias in Iraq.”

“He’s not dead today because of what he did in the past, he’s dead today because he miscalculated what President Trump would do regarding future attacks,” explained Graham.

Graham said President Trump must make it clear to Iran that any retaliation will put their oil refineries at risk. “Their oil refineries are the last thing they have in terms of an economy,” he said.

Graham said that “the president has to convince the ayatollah that if he retaliates, our response will be greater than the market will bear.”

The Russian pranksters famous for tricking House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) into seeking nude pictures of President Donald Trump are claiming that they just got Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) — for a second time.

YouTubers Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov, who go by the names Vovan and Lexus, recently called Waters’s office and, with the help of a female colleague, pretended to be teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, TIME‘s “Person of the Year” for 2019, and her father, claiming to have a taped confession from Trump admitting to the exact charges in House Democrats’ articles of impeachment which passed in late December.

A woman who identifies herself as Congresswoman Waters tells “Greta”: “Of course, I know all about you. You have made quite a big, big, big thunder on this issue. I am really, really very proud of you and the work that you’re doing.”

The prank callers trick Waters into making a statement in defense of the environment of an imaginary island named “Chunga Changa.”

The call gets more farcical when “Greta” tells Waters that she met Trump at the United Nations, where he privately insulted her and confessed to threatening Ukraine’s president.

“He came over, he leaned towards me, and said softly, ‘Listen to me very carefully, little girl, you will never achieve your goals,'” “Greta” says.

“He said you will never achieve your goals? Oh my goodness!” Waters exclaims, stunned. “Greta” then says that she cried. “Oh my God did you cry?” Waters exclaims.

“Greta’s father” then claims to Waters that Trump told her that he did pressure Ukraine to investigate his political rivals: “He said to her, ‘You know, little girl, nobody believe you anyway, I will tell you the truth. I really pushed on Ukrainian president and you know that you will never achieve your goals like those congressional fools that accuse me.”

“Oh my God, he mentioned the Ukrainian president?” Waters exclaims.

Waters then presses them on what else Trump said. They told her that they got the conversation recorded and have evidence. Waters then asked if they would be in Washington, DC, anytime soon and if they could meet with her.

“Greta’s” father then offers for the young girl to testify if Waters needs it.

Waters responds, “Oh yes, I am absolutely still working — we are working very hard, we’re putting together the facts, and we’re going after him. We are going to try everything that we have to impeach him.”

“And if the public knew that he talked to Greta like that, he made her cry, and told her she would never achieve — this will go against him, too,” she adds.

“You bring it to me,” Waters says of the recording they claimed to have. “You tell me what day you can get there. And we’ll arrange to meet with you as quickly as we can.”

This is the second time the pranksters have purportedly tricked Waters. In February 2017, Vovan and Lexus posted a video where Vovan posed as the Prime Minister of Ukraine and discussed Russian sanctions with a woman who they identify as Waters.

FOMC Minutes Give Timeline Of Fed "Transitioning Away" From Repo Liquidity Bailout

Since statement and press conference on Dec 11th, where Powell reiterated that The Fed would be on hold unless something yuuge "material reassessment in the outlook" happened, gold is the best performing asset-class (outpacing stocks) as the dollar has been the laggard...And while it has been volatile, expectations for Fed actions (implied by the market) in 2020 are now slightly more dovish than before the Fed meeting...once again pricing in at least one rate-cut this year.

Thirteen of 17 officials forecast rates would be unchanged through the 2020 U.S. presidential election year, according to updated economic projections issued at the time, with four penciling in a quarter-point increase.

Of course, the big issue that The Fed was quietly panicking about was the repo crisis, which they have extinguished (for now) thanks to hundreds of billions of dollars puked across the 'turn' to ensure the holes are filled. As we noted previously, the price of year-end stability was $414 billion... $256 billion in repo injections ($211.4 term and $44.3 in overnight) and $157.5 bn in Bill purchases. All of which has lifted stocks globally...And as a reminder, The Fed has begun - for all intent and purpose - monetizing US debt.

So what exactly are investors looking for in the Minutes that could spook markets? Not much in the traditional sense. “The Fed is trying to keep the market liquid. Their comfort with the repo market is much less clear-cut. It does feel like a work in progress.”

But money-market participants are anxiously awaiting any signals that The Fed might give on its longer-run operational plans (as Fed's Evans hinted earlier today at a standing repo facility - bailout fund - going forward).

“Any views on repo markets outlined in the minutes should probably be adjusted for the year-end results, which on net have likely bolstered the Fed’s confidence that they have regained control of repo markets,” NatWest strategists led by Blake Gwinn say in Friday note

Information on the Fed’s longer-run operational plans or even their “perceived role in stabilizing funding rates or tolerance for volatility,” would be welcomed, they said. NatWest expects the central bank to start pulling back on their direct repo involvement in early 2020, and to start tapering their reserve-adding bill purchases in 2Q

And so the highlights from the Minutes include:

But...

Longfin CEO Settles Fraud Action

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that Longfin Corp. CEO Venkata S. Meenavalli has agreed to pay $400,000 in disgorgement and penalties to resolve the SEC’s fraud action against him. The settlement, which remains subject to court approval, concludes the SEC’s actions against Longfin, its CEO, and three other individuals in which the SEC has secured over $26 million of ill-gotten gains. The SEC intends to establish a Fair Fund to distribute money received from the defendants to harmed investors.

The SEC’s complaint alleged that Longfin and Meenavalli obtained qualification for a Regulation A+ offering by falsely representing in public filings that the company was managed and operated in the U.S. According to the complaint, Longfin and Meenavalli then distributed over 400,000 Longfin shares to Meenavalli’s affiliates, and misrepresented the offering to Nasdaq in order to meet its listing requirements. The complaint also alleged that more than 90 percent of Longfin’s reported revenue for 2017 was fictitiously derived from sham commodities transactions.

“As alleged in our complaint, Meenavalli abused the Reg. A+ process to conduct a fraudulent offering, list Longfin on Nasdaq, and entice investors with falsified revenue,” said Anita B. Bandy, Associate Director of the Division of Enforcement. “The SEC staff’s quick actions exposed the full scope of Meenavalli’s fraud and resulted in additional monetary and prophylactic relief to prevent him from defrauding U.S. investors in the future.”

If approved, the settlement would require Meenavalli to disgorge $159,000 (his full salary received while acting as Longfin’s CEO) plus prejudgment interest of $9,000, and to pay a $232,000 civil penalty. It would also require Meenavalli to surrender all of his Longfin stock, permanently bar him from acting as an officer or director of a public company, and enjoin him from participating in the offer or sale of penny stocks. Meenavalli has agreed to settle the charges without admitting or denying the SEC’s allegations. The SEC previously obtained a default judgment against Longfin that ordered nearly $6.8 million in monetary relief. A parallel criminal action against Meenavalli, filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, remains ongoing.

The SEC filed a separate action alleging that Longfin, Meenavalli, and three affiliated individuals illegally distributed and sold more than $33 million of Longfin stock in unregistered transactions. In June 2019, the court ordered over $26 million in disgorgement and penalties against the three affiliates, and in August entered default judgments ordering civil penalties of $284,139 and $28,416 against Longfin and Meenavalli, respectively.

What is a hypersonic weapon?

Hypersonic weapons can travel at five times the speed of sound (Mach 5 and faster), covering vast distances in minutes. They fall into two categories: boost glide and scramjet.

Report: All Iranian Military Decisions in Latin America Ran Through Soleimani

Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s external terrorism forces eliminated overnight Friday by a U.S. drone strike, oversaw every military decision taken by Iran in Latin America, according to a report by the Argentine news network Infobae last year.

Soleimani ran the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, the “elite” terrorism unit responsible for, along with Hezbollah, the 1994 bombing of the Argentine-Israeli Mutual Association (AMIA) headquarters in Buenos Aires. The attack was the deadliest in the Western Hemisphere prior to September 11, 2001, killing 85 people.

Soleimani took over the Quds Force after that attack, in 1998, and focused much of his legacy on Iran’s conquests in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. Most recently, the Pentagon revealed they believed him responsible for organizing the attack on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad this weekend.

President Donald Trump designated the IRGC a foreign terrorist organization last year.

Infobae revealed that Soleimani personally consulted on all military decisions in Latin America in a report in which it alleged that Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, had offered to send IRGC terrorists to Venezuela to protect socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro. At the time of the report, in April, the legitimate president of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, had announced that he had convinced the nation’s military to follow him and remove Maduro from power. Zarif’s offer, Infobae reported, would add IRGC terrorist units to the army of Cuban communist soldiers that currently keep Maduro in power.

The outlet did not specify if Maduro accepted the offer. Maduro does remain in control of Venezuela, as the nation’s defense minister and key generals surfaced after Guaidó’s attempted takeover saying they had not defected from Maduro and that the higher levels of the armed forces had eradicated “opposition” elements who chose to obey the legal president of the country.

It did note that Quds Force members could be part of the deal, highlighting Soleimani’s power within the organization.

“The military official is a fundamental piece in planning the foreign policy of the Iranian theocractic regime,” Infobae said of Soleimani, “so much so that all military decisions in the rest of the world, including in Latin America, go through him.”

Eliminating Soleimani now leaves those key Latin American military decisions in the hands of Brigadier General Esmayeel Qaani, once described as an “uncharismatic and a less distinguished military commander” than his former boss Soleimani.

Iran has grown its influence in Latin America exponentially through Venezuela and its colonizing power Cuba. Late dictator Hugo Chávez invited greater ties between Venezuela and Iran during his tenure, regularly meeting with then-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Maduro’s tenure has seen the rise of Tareck El Aissami, a U.S.-designated “drug kingpin” who currently serves as the manager of the nation’s oil and gold natural resources.

“Tareck El Aissami is one of Hezbollah’s great bagmen, a sort of huge funder, and the money goes through the networks, and then, as you say, that money comes back through investments,” Vanessa Neumann, a leading expert on drug cartels and terrorist groups in Latin America, told Breitbart News in 2018. “[Ground sources] have told me that, based on their perspective, he is a big player on the funding side, rather than the operations side.”

Silicon Valley tech giant Google has suspended the integration of some of its hardware and services with Chinese company Xiaomi after a user who connected a Xiaomi camera to his Google Home Hub revealed that he was able to see into other users’ homes, including sleeping children.

Business Insider reports that Silicon Valley tech giant Google has suspended the integration between Xiaomi devices and Google software and services. The decision comes after a user with a Xioami home security camera claims that he was able to see into other users’ homes after linking the camera to his Google Home Hub.

Reddit user /u/Dio-V claimed in a post in the Google Home subreddit that they were able to see images from other users Xiaomi Mijia smart security cameras on their Google Home Hub. The user posted a video of which showed them attempting to view the livestream from their own security camera on the device, which then glitches and shows random images from other users’ devices.

The Reddit user posted a number of other random images that appeared on their device, including a man asleep on a chair, and a sleeping baby. Other users stated that the glitch was “so f***ed up” and “so creepy.”

A spokeswoman for Xiaomi told Business Insider that the issue has been fixed but that 1,000 more users could possibly be affected. The issue was reportedly caused by a cache update on December 26th, 2019, designed to “improve camera streaming quality.” The spokesperson added:

This [issue] has only happened in extremely rare conditions. In this case, it happened during the integration between [the] Mi Home Security Camera Basic 1080p and the Google Home Hub with a display screen under poor network conditions.

We have also found 1,044 users were with such integrations and only a few with extremely poor network conditions might be affected. This issue will not happen if the camera is linked to the Xiaomi’s Mi Home app.

Xiaomi has communicated and fixed this issue with Google, and has also suspended this service until the root cause has been completely solved, to ensure that such issues will not happen again.

A Google spokesperson has since told Android Police that following the Reddit users’ posts, the company was “disabling Xiaomi integrations on our devices.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW/AP) — Iraqi-Americans living in Western New York gathered in Niagara Square late Thursday night in support of an airstrike that killed an Iranian general .

Iran has vowed a "harsh" response for the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds Force and the architect of its interventions across the Middle East.

The killing, and any forceful retaliation by Iran, could ignite a conflict that engulfs the whole region, endangering U.S. troops in Iraq, Syria and beyond. The U.S. ordered its citizens to leave Iraq and closed the embassy in Baghdad. The airstrike follows two days of attacks on the embassy.

But the Iraqi-Americans who rallied in Niagara Square said they were elated by the general's death.

"We are so proud of what the United States did," said Alia Alshammary. "And we are so happy because this guy killed a lot of Iraqi people. He's the only reason for what's going on in Iraq."

Those who came out chanted and honked their horns to show support.

Australia may face a tropical cyclone this weekend at the same time as other states brace for a catastrophic fire danger.

The Bureau of Meteorology says there are increasing signs a tropical cyclone will form off the northwest coast of Western Australia.

Forecast models suggest a low pressure system between Australia and Indonesia could develop into a tropical cyclone either tomorrow or on Monday.

"Regardless of whether this low turns into a tropical cyclone, there is a good chance that wind and rain will increase over northern parts of WA early next week," Weatherzone said.

"If a tropical cyclone does form, it may case more severe weather, with heavy rain, damaging winds and a storm surge all possible effects should it near or cross the coast."

Strong wind warnings have already been issued for: Perth Local Waters, Pilbara Coast West, Ningaloo Coast, Gascoyne Coast, Geraldton Coast, Lancelin Coast and Perth Coast.

Agnes Callamard, the U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial killing, said on Thursday night that the U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian terrorist mastermind Gen. Qasem Soleimani was a violation of international law.

The U.N. has been oddly quiet about Soleimani’s violations of international law, including activities that indisputably violated U.N. sanctions.

“The targeted killings of Qasem Soleiman and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis are most likely unlawful and violate international human rights law: Outside the context of active hostilities, the use of drones or other means for targeted killing is almost never likely to be legal,” Callamard wrote on Twitter.

She proceeded to lay out an impossibly stringent standard for preventive action that becomes grotesquely amusing when measured against Soleimani’s malign activities, not least his involvement in an undisputed act of war against the United States, the attack on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad last week:

To be justified under international human rights law, intentionally lethal or potentially lethal force can only be used where strictly necessary to protect against an imminent threat to life.

In other words, whoever targeted these two men would need to demonstrate that the persons targeted constitute(d) an imminent threat to others. An individual’s past involvement in “terrorist” attacks is not sufficient to make his targeting for killing lawful.

Furthermore, drone killing of anyone other than the target (family members or others in the vicinity, for example) would be an arbitrary deprivation of life under human rights law and could result in State responsibility and individual criminal liability.

The use of drones on the territory of other States has also been justified on the basis of self-defense. Under customary international law States can take military action if the threatened attack is imminent, no other means would deﬂect it, and the action is proportionate.

The test for so-called anticipatory self-defense is very narrow: it must be a necessity that is “instant, overwhelming, and leaving no choice of means, and no moment of deliberation”. This test is unlikely to be met in these particular cases.

Soleimani was not much concerned about killing people other than his targets – his operations routinely included the indiscriminate murder of civilians, from Syria to the streets of Baghdad.

In the most recent and clear-cut example, Iraqi Shiite militia acting on Soleimani’s orders launched a rocket attack on December 27 that killed an American civilian contractor. The forces that attacked the U.S. embassy in Baghdad clearly identified Soleimani as their “leader.”

Last week, the Detroit Free Press reported that 26-year-old cantorial soloist Sean Samitt falsely reported being stabbed in the parking lot at Temple Kol Ami in West Bloomfield by a man who insulted him for being Jewish. Samitt reported the assault to police on Dec. 15.

Detectives on the scene searched Temple Kol Ami and did not find any evidence in the parking lot but discovered bloody tissues in Samitt’s office and in the men’s bathroom. There was also a bloody knife found in the kitchen area.

Surveillance footage from a nearby camera did not display any signs of an attack outside the synagogue.Police shared with the Free Press that Samitt told them he experienced a loss of consciousness while washing dishes at the synagogue and accidentally stabbed himself.

Samitt said he made up the story about being stabbed due to being teased at work for a medical condition.Officers later examined Samitt’s Apple Watch Health app data and found he did not lose consciousness. Samitt then told police he had stabbed himself because of a desire to get out of his contract with Temple Kol Ami.Once Samitt admitted he had fabricated the attack, West Bloomfield police reported the incident to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.
