Illegal Immigrant Child Rapist Released from Jail by Maryland Sanctuary County Remains at Large

A Maryland county that offers illegal immigrants sanctuary keeps releasing dangerous criminals from jail to shield them from federal authorities, most recently a man from El Salvador who raped a seven-year-old girl multiple times. Rather than honor a detainer issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), officials in Montgomery County freed the child rapist on bond recently and he remains at large. Court documents obtained by a local media outlet say the 56-year-old, Rene Ramos-Hernandez, who reportedly lives illegally in Brentwood “forced unwanted sexual intercourse” with the girl “at least ten times.”

In a statement issued this week, ICE blasts Montgomery County officials for protecting illegal aliens who commit state crimes. “Montgomery County continues the practice of not honoring lawful ICE detainers and release potential public safety threats back into the community,” said acting Baltimore Field Office Director Francisco Madrigal. “When they refuse to give adequate notification of an impending release to allow a safe transfer of custody, it shows their actions are insincere. ICE believes the best way to protect public safety is for law enforcement to work together.” The agency’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) lodged a detainer with the Montgomery County Detention Center on June 19 and authorities blew it off, instead discharging Ramos-Hernandez on June 23. ICE was notified that the illegal immigrant rapist was let go, but officers at the Montgomery County jail refused to hold Ramos-Hernandez until ERO officers arrived at the facility, according to the agency.

Ramos-Hernandez has lived in the U.S. illegally for years. In fact, the rapes occurred from 2002 to 2003, when he was in his late 30s and the girl was just seven. The victim reported the crimes to Montgomery County Police in 2017 and it took almost two years for local authorities to track down the illegal alien. On June 18 he was booked at the Montgomery County Detention Center (MCDC) in Rockville on two counts of second-degree rape and one count of sexual abuse of a minor. The next day ICE lodged the detainer. A Montgomery County judge granted Ramos-Hernandez a $30,000 bond and now the feds cannot find him even though bail conditions include electronic monitoring and curfew. Ramos-Hernandez was also ordered to have no contact with minors, which is a joke considering authorities do not even know where he is. He provided the court with a Brentwood address and claims to work as a “remodeler,” according to court records cited in the news story. He faces up to 70 years in prison if authorities ever find him.

From ‘Made in China’ to ‘Owned by China’: 20 deals show how China is gobbling up U.S. assets

Between 2002 and 2016, Chinese state-owned or state-linked companies acquired more than $120 billion worth of assets in 40 states across the U.S.

U.S. lawmakers are seeking how to address growing American supply chain concerns amid the global coronavirus pandemic. In addition to most consumer goods and electronics, China reportedly manufactures "more than 90% of U.S. antibiotics, vitamin C, ibuprofen and hydrocortisone, as well as 70% of acetaminophen," among other crucial drugs imported by the U.S.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) has become one of the most vocal critics of the Chinese Communist Party and has urged a boycott of goods made in China. “We have to pass a law: Stop buying anything from Communist China,” Scott said in a recent interview. "Nothing. Don’t buy any products from them."

However, a boycott of goods made in China would do little to address growing Chinese influence over American interests achieved via investments, mergers, and acquisitions. Between 2002 and 2016, Chinese state-owned or state-linked companies acquired more than $120 billion worth of assets in 40 states across the U.S. Just 15 Chinese entities (sovereign wealth funds, state-owned corporations, or state-linked private sector firms) accounted for 60% of this activity. In 2016 alone, more than 50 of these Chinese acquisitions exceeded $50 million. Several Chinese takeover deals exceeded $1 billion.

Here are 20 Chinese investments and buyouts that have consequences for American consumers (and potentially 2020 election voters):

1. Reddit — China’s Tencent Invested $150 Million in 2019

Online social forum Reddit (majority-owned by Conde Nast publishing) received $150 million in funding from China's Tencent. The investment is "an odd pairing between one of the architects of China’s Great Firewall of censorship and one of America’s most lawless free-speech forums," wrote TechCrunch’s Josh Constine. Reddit has since placed the most popular pro-Trump subreddit, The_Donald, in "quarantine," where it effectively ceased all activities.

2. TikTok — Viral video platform owned by Chinese company valued at over $100 billion

China’s ByteDance created TikTok in September 2016 and launched the millennial-friendly social network on the iOS and Android app stores in 2017. In October 2018, TikTok became the most downloaded app in the U.S. — the first Chinese app to do so — and ranked among the 10 most-downloaded apps in the last decade (with the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). TikTok users were recently praised by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) for helping to disrupt a Trump campaign event in Tulsa, Okla.

Business owners decry limitations on their activity, delays in transfer of government aid, in chat initiated by PM, who pins blame on Tax Authority

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday was berated by business owners angered by what they said was a lack of financial assistance from the government, as their businesses struggle amid the restrictions put in place to contain the coronavirus.

In an unprecedented Zoom meeting he initiated, Netanyahu was confronted by the owners of restaurants, bars, event halls and gyms over the limitations on their businesses and delays in the transfer of aid they were promised.

“We won’t survive! No businesses will remain, sir! We’re asking that you tell us, like you said at the start of the campaign, that within 48 hours the money will be with us,” one of the business owners said, according to footage of the call aired by Channel 12.

Another participant on the call warned her business would go under if she didn’t receive financial assistance in the coming days.

“We’re collapsing, simply collapsing. I haven’t slept in four months,” she said. “I employ 150 workers, I don’t know what to say to them.”

African cardinal criticizes Black Lives Matter movement for ‘dismantling’ civilization

South African Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier strongly criticized the Black Lives Matter movement for its “dismantling” of civilizations and cultures.

Napier, himself a black man and archbishop of Durban on the South African coast, tweeted that a “ brief study of the founding statement of ‘Black Lives Matter’ indicates the movement is being hijacked by the interests & parties committed to dismantling the very values, structure & institutions which have over the centuries undergird the best civilisations & cultures!”

After his original tweet on July 4, Napier followed up on the Black Lives Matter movement two days later. He said, “Another crucial test of the authenticity of the Black Lives Matter movement will be its stance vis a vis Planned Parenthood and the Abortion Industry!”

Napier added, “The same test applies when assessing the sincerity of those who voice thunderous condemnation against Domestic Violence, (erroneously called “Gender based Violence) as opposed to the absolute silence concerning Violence inflicted upon Babies in their mother’s womb!”

As pointed out by Illinois Right to Life, abortion center Planned Parenthood is actually a danger to the black community. Not only was Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger a racist. The organization also targets minority communities. Among the black community, the abortion giant is the leading cause of death.

“According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, there have been over 15.5 million abortions performed on African Americans,” Illinois Right to Life said. “These 15.5 million Black lives lost to abortion outnumber the deaths of Black people due to AIDS, violent crimes, accidents, cancer, and heart disease combined.”

US Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, also criticized the movement. Bishop Strickland talked about the platform of the Black Lives Matter movement, which contains several positions Catholics can in no way support. Linking to the movement’s website, he tweeted, “Please educate yourself on this!”

He then pointed out that Black Lives Matter’s statement of belief mentions two points “that are contrary to FAITH...#1 opposing the nuclear family (where is dad?) and #2 opposing God’s plan for sex as a union of male & female.”

Black Lives Matter, according to its own website, wants to “disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and ‘villages’ that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.”

The term “villages” likely refers to Hillary Clinton’s book “It Takes a Village,” the title of which was based on the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Clinton argued for society’s shared responsibility for successfully raising a child. Catholic Senator Rick Santorum eventually wrote a rebuttal, titled, “It Takes a Family.”

In addition to wanting to “disrupt” the traditional family, Black Lives Matter fosters “a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).”

The website’s section on “What We Believe” mentions transgenderism in several other places. “We make space for transgender brothers and sisters to participate and lead,” the movement stresses. “We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.”

American Judge Says He Is “Tentatively Inclined” To Reject Bayer’s Monsanto Settlement

As the EU’s antitrust regulator announces another round of sweeping antitrust investigations into the big US tech behemoths, an American judge is apparently making noises about throwing out a major settlement involving German multinational pharma conglomerate Bayer. According to the settlement, which we reported on a few weeks ago when it was first announced, Bayer had agreed to pay $10 billion to settle thousands of lawsuits brought against it over its purchase of Monsanto, the American agrichemical giant that’s best known for producing Roundup weed killer.

The lawsuits stemmed from evidence that glyphosate, one of the primary ingredients of Monsanto’s Roundup, is actually carcinogenic. Which means that by marketing Roundup into ubiquity, even pairing it with genetically modified crop seeds allowing farmers to spray the stuff then simply forget about it since it wouldn’t harm the crops.

A landmark California Court ruling handed down in 2017 found Bayer liable for the plaintiffs’ cancers, since it now owned Monsanto. The mountain of litigation has weighed on Bayer’s share price ever since, making the Monsanto acquisition one of the biggest blunders in the history of the storied German firm. The two sides have been in negotiations virtually ever since, until two weeks ago, when a majority of the plaintiffs agreed to a $10 billion settlement.

U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria wrote in a court filing Monday that a proposed system for dealing with future lawsuits over the herbicide is problematic. Shares of Bayer, which inherited the weedkiller through its purchase of Monsanto, fell as much as 6.9% in Frankfurt, the most intraday since March 23.

The judge’s misgivings center on a plan to create a class of future claims as part of the nearly $11 billion settlement. Any change to that portion of the proposal wouldn’t necessarily affect the rest of the deal, in which the company agreed to resolve about 125,000 existing lawsuits.

About 30,000 claims, contending that Roundup caused non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, are not yet subject to deals between plaintiffs and Bayer. Some U.S. plaintiffs’ lawyers are vowing to file another wave of new suits that could add tens of thousands to that total.

Chhabria set a July 24 hearing to consider the class-action proposal, which he said he’s “tentatively inclined” to reject. That portion of the plan would establish a scientific panel to determine whether Roundup’s active ingredient causes cancer, while still potentially allowing users of the herbicide to press claims.

However, a minority of plaintiffs and their lawyers held out for a better deal, arguing that the $10BN settlement would preclude other victims from seeking compensation in the future. And now, apparently, a US judge agrees, and in an opinion filed on Monday, he is hinting at the possibility of striking down the proposed settlement, and forcing the two sides to start afresh.

During the next round of talks, the plaintiffs would have much more leverage over Bayer, and would likely be able to negotiate a much more generous settlement.

That’s bad news for Bayer shareholders, as one analyst explained to Bloomberg.

The judge’s filing reinforces concerns from investors that Bayer’s Roundup deal isn’t enough to get it beyond the mountain of litigation, Alistair Campbell, an analyst at Liberum Capital, said in a note. While Bayer’s market valuation is “deeply discounted” right now, that situation probably won’t change until the company can convince the market that it’s finally resolved the Roundup legal headache.

It’s also a long-overdue move by an American court to hold a European company accountable for alleged abuses perpetrated in the US, after the EU has spent so much time nitpicking every little violation committed by Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Alphabet.

Charles Wade, a prominent Black Lives Matter organizer and co-founder of Operation Help or Hush, was arrested last month and charged with human trafficking and prostitution.

Mr. Wade was arrested at a Howard Johnson Inn in College Park, Maryland, on April 25. Police said he was residing in a motel room where he allegedly pimped a 17-year-old girl, The Daily Caller reported Thursday.

Mr. Wade was held on seven counts relating to felony human trafficking and prostitution. He was bailed out shortly after his arrest, according to a statement he released on Twitter Wednesday.

He was arrested as part of a sting operation in which an undercover officer responded to an ad Mr. Wade allegedly placed for a 23-year-old woman on backpage.com, a website frequently used by sex traffickers and prostitutes, The Daily Caller reported.

Investigators said the woman, who turned out to be a 17-year-old girl, called Mr. Wade her manager. She said he knew she was a minor but wasn’t worried because of her upcoming birthday. She also told investigators that she provided all the money she earned to Mr. Wade, The Daily Caller reported.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Prosecutors in Iowa have filed a rarely used leak charge against Black Lives Matter protesters accused of stealing a confidential police document and displaying it during a television news broadcast.

Two protesters are charged with unauthorized dissemination of intelligence data, a felony that carries up to five years in prison.

The Iowa Judicial Branch says it's only the second time that the charge has been filed since 2010. It's intended to punish officers and others who share information that could undermine criminal investigations or violate privacy protections.

The document in question was a Des Moines Police Department bulletin that officers and state troopers had with them while patrolling a July 1 protest at the Iowa Capitol. The bulletin included photos of suspects who were wanted in the destruction of a Des Moines police car during a June 20 protest.

Alexandria Dea, 26, stole the intelligence bulletin from the back pocket of an officer’s pants during a confrontation between officers and protesters, which began after officers arrested three of the suspects inside the Capitol, according to a criminal complaint.

Protesters later gathered at the Polk County Jail to demand the release of those arrested during the clash. While there, 21-year-old Viet Tran discussed and displayed the bulletin during an interview that was broadcast on WOI-TV, an ABC affiliate, according to a complaint.

California faculty demands 'free tuition for all black, native, and indigenous students'

The California Faculty Association issued demands amid nationwide protests.

The demands include "free tuition for black, native, and indigenous students."

The faculty further endorsed a statewide effort to reverse a ban on affirmative action.

The California Faculty Association released a statement in light of George Floyd’s death and recent protests. The group also created a list of demands for California State University that it says will provide "redress for systemic anti-Black racism in the CSU.”

The CFA demanded CSU “provide free tuition for all Black, Native, and Indigenous students.” Trends show that enrollment of these students has been decreasing within the CSU system. To increase admission of these “marginalized students,” the CFA proposes that the universities make efforts “to overturn Proposition 209, the ban on affirmative action.”

According to the CFA, “racial pay equity” is necessary because “workload is also higher for Black faculty given that CSU faculty are majority-white, and CSU students are majority of color resulting in 'cultural taxation.'”

The CFA claimed that the research and studies conducted by Black faculty are "often not valued at the same level as other faculty."

To "condemn white supremacy," the CFA proposed that hiring and retention practices be reformed to mandate that "there be Black faculty available to serve as reviewers for Black faculty candidates." The introduction of "targeted hiring programs" is necessary "to promote and develop the scholarship and creative activity of Black faculty," the CFA insisted.

California universities should show their support to “communities blighted by systemic and institutional racism through the War(s) on Drugs from both the Nixon and Reagan administrations.” The CFA demanded that students who have been affected by the criminal justice system have outreach programs made available to them, including “funding and fully staffing offices” as well as “dedicated study space.”

The universities should foster an inclusive environment by expanding the curriculum for Ethnic Studies, creating Black Student/Resource Centers, and enforcing “unconscious bias” training for faculty. There should be a new course requirement for all students in the Ethnic Studies department to dismantle the “the historical and longstanding infrastructures of universities” since many educational institutions have been “fundamentally grounded in a white supremacist colonial discourse and culture.”

To ensure that CSU retains Black, Native, and Indigenous student enrollment, the campus should “not rely on police for safety," the CFA said.

The group claimed that police have “racist roots” that has resulted in “the dehumanization of Black people.” To provide support for the Black community, the CFA endorsed initiatives that advocate for divestment and “the full abolition of the police.”

CSU must also look to protect the Black LGBTQIA+ community, group futher stated.

The CFA “recognize[s] that the movement for queer and trans liberation was catalyzed by uprisings led by QTPOC (queer and trans people of color), often against police violence.” To best show all members in the Black community that “all Black lives matter,” the universities must continue “building on a radical and beautiful legacy of resistance.”

This again? New coronavirus lockdown triggers second wave of panic buying in Australia

A new wave of panic buying has hit Melbourne, with major queues lining up outside supermarkets after local authorities announced the reintroduction of stricter anti-coronavirus measures – that don’t actually prohibit shopping.

The stage three lockdown measures will return to metropolitan Melbourne and areas north of the city starting on Wednesday, Victorian PM Daniel Andrews confirmed. The announcement came atop the decision of two major chains, Coles and Woolworths, to remove all buying restrictions at stores all across Australia.

The mix of two has apparently had quite an effect on the public, as major queues emerged at shops across the city almost immediately with people lining up at night to lay their hands on some ‘essentials’.

While panic buying has been observed worldwide amid the pandemic, Australians have turned out to be particularly hungry for stockpiling groceries. During the first wave of the pandemic-induced panic, several violent incidents across the country made headlines as angry shoppers literally brawled over toilet roll.

Rapper Snoop Dogg Calls Black Conservatives ‘The Coon Bunch’

If you’re black and conservative, then Snoop Dogg hates you.

The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., over the weekend blasted black conservatives, such as Candace Owens, Herman Cain, and Diamond & Silk, calling them “The Coon Bunch.”

Referencing “The Brady Bunch” in an Instagram post, Broadus shared photos of black conservatives.

But Broadus got schooled by some black conservatives.

“Puppet of white liberals [Snoop Dogg] who used to love Trump before he was ordered to denounce him by his masters, is being SCHOOLED by black conservatives on IG after he posted this meme calling blk Trump supporters ‘coons,'” black conservative Melissa Tate wrote on Twitter, including a picture of Broadus with President Trump.

“If I’m a Coon @SnoopDogg what’s this?!” wrote Angela Stanton King, who was targeted in Broadus’s post.

Some of his “fans” weren’t too pleased, either.

“49 million followers and you don’t even have half of your fans that agree with you. You have created a divide even deeper. You had no problem chilling with Trump when it benefited you right?! All you’re doing by this post is making people love all those you are speaking of even more!” posted one person on Instagram.

“All I see are amazing Americans. Such a shame they have to be named called for not agreeing with someone political opinion. Not cool Snoop,” wrote another.

Wrote as third: “If I WASN’T voting, I am now. Thanks Snoop!!! Silent majority is tired of your racist sh*t!”

Broadus, who from the pictures was clearly friendly with Trump, has become a TDS sufferer. In a 2017 rap video “BadBadNotGood,” Broadus depicted Trump as a clown smoking a joint, and he ends up pointing a gun at his head. When he shoots the gun, a flash fires at Trump’s head and a ‘BANG’ flag pops out.

In 2019, Broadus said of Trump: “Don’t vote for that n*gger. Please don’t. Look what he do, he just don’t give a f*ck…”

Rockets Hit Baghdad Airport And Green Zone, Despite U.S. C-RAM Deployment

On the evening of July 5th, a Katyusha rocket was fired at the Baghdad International Airport, near where American troops and diplomats are housed.

The strike happened just hours after the US reportedly shot down a Katyusha rocket that was launched at the same location.

Reportedly there were no injuries and no damages, but this is the 7th such rocket launched towards the airport in less than 30 days.

The US, as per Fox News, accuses Iran-backed militias of carrying out the attacks.

The increased attacks against U.S. and coalition forces prompted the American military recently to deploy C-RAM [“Counter-rocket, artillery and mortar”] — which could fire 3,000 rounds of 20-mm high-explosive tracer rounds per minute to protect Baghdad’s Green Zone, which houses the US Embassy.

The C-RAM shot down a Katyusha rocket for the first time since it was deployed to Iraq’s capital city on the morning of July 5th.

C-RAM is the land-based version of the CWIS [close-in weapons system] which U.S. warships have used for decades.

C-RAM has protected American troops in bases in Iraq for many years dating back to the Iraq War.

Bridgeport Resident Charged with Possessing and Trading Images Depicting Sexual Abuse of Children

John H. Durham, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that ROBERT J. MOSLEY, 53, of Bridgeport, has been charged by federal criminal complaint with child pornography offenses.

Mosley, who has been detained in state custody on a parole violation since January 28, 2020, appeared today before U.S. Magistrate Judge William I. Garfinkel via video conference.

As alleged in the complaint, in 2016, Mosley was convicted in Connecticut Superior Court of possession of child pornography in the second degree. He was sentenced for that offense to 10 years in jail, execution suspended after six years, and 20 years of probation. Mosley was released on parole in November 2018.

7 Arrested, Face Federal Charges In Rioting At Portland Courthouse

PORTLAND, Ore.—Seven people have been arrested and face federal charges for their roles in weekend riots at the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse in Portland.

According to court documents, since May 26, 2020, protests in downtown Portland have regularly been followed by nightly criminal activity including assaults on law enforcement officers, destruction of property, looting, arson, and vandalism.

Rowan Olsen, 19, of Portland, is charged with disorderly conduct, creating a hazard on federal property, and failing to obey a lawful order; Shant Singh Ahuja, 28, of Oceanside, California, is charged with destruction of federal property; and Andrew Steven Faulkner, 24, of Beaverton, Oregon; Gretchen Margaret Blank, 29, of Seattle, Washington; Christopher Fellini, 31, of Portland; Cody Porter, 28, of Portland; and Taimane Jame Teo, 24, of Eugene, Oregon, are charged with assaulting federal officers.

The Hatfield Federal Courthouse has been a repeated target of vandalism, sustaining extensive damage. U.S. Marshals Service deputies and officers from the Federal Protective Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection working to protect the courthouse have been subjected to threats; aerial fireworks including mortars; high intensity lasers targeting officers’ eyes; thrown rocks, bottles, and balloons filled with paint from demonstrators while performing their duties.

On July 2-3, 2020, Olsen is accused of using his body to push on and hold a glass door at the Hatfield Courthouse closed, preventing officers from exiting the building and causing the door to shatter. With the door broken, a mortar firework entered the courthouse, detonating near the officers. The officers used shields and their bodies to block the open doorway for approximately six hours until demonstrators dispersed.

On July 4, 2020, Ahuja is accused of willfully destroying a closed-circuit video camera mounted on the exterior of the Hatfield Courthouse.

On July 5, 2020, Blank is accused of assaulting a federal officer with a shield while the officer was attempting to arrest another protestor.

On July 5-6, 2020, Faulkner, Fellini, Porter, and Teo are accused of assaulting federal officers with high intensity lasers. At the time of his arrest, Faulkner also possessed a sheathed machete.

In addition, analysis of Mosley’s e-mail account revealed that he sent numerous e-mails soliciting child pornography, sent images of child pornography to others, and sent links to his cloud storage account.

The criminal complaint charges Mosley with receipt of child pornography and solicitation of child pornography, offenses that carry a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 15 years a maximum term of imprisonment of 40 years. Mosley is also charged with possession of child pornography, which carries a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years. The penalties in this case are enhanced based on Mosley’s alleged criminal history.

Middle Seat Consulting received between $350K and $1M worth of small business loans

A progressive political consulting firm that receives large payments from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D., N.Y.) reelection campaign and activist Shaun King's PAC raked in hundreds of thousands in taxpayer money meant to help small businesses.

New data show that between $350,000 and $1 million flowed from the Paycheck Protection Program, a federal program created to help small businesses cope with the economic downturn caused by coronavirus, to Middle Seat Consulting, a Washington, D.C.-based digital firm that provides services to far-left Democrats. Just 13.5 percent of companies received more than $150,000 from the PPP program, putting Middle Seat among the upper echelon of recipients.

The liberal consulting firm applied for and took the loan despite already receiving large sums from Ocasio-Cortez's campaign, King's Real Justice PAC, and other liberal groups. Middle Seat has raised more than $9 million from other left-wing committees this election cycle. Its receipt of up to $1 million in taxpayer cash could raise concerns among political watchdogs that the firm—along with other liberal activist groups, legal firms, and companies linked to Democratic politicians—took government loans that could instead have gone to struggling small businesses.

The consulting firm is Ocasio-Cortez's top 2020 campaign vendor. So far this cycle, the Democrat's campaign committee has dished out more than $875,000 to Middle Seat for email lists, ad commission, and consulting, Federal Election Commission records show.

King's Real Justice PAC, which works to elect far-left district attorney candidates, has provided more than $270,000 to the group. During the 2018 cycle, Real Justice paid another $354,000 to Middle Seat, which was cofounded by one of the PAC's original leaders.

Justice Democrats, the progressive group that propelled Ocasio-Cortez into office, has also paid Middle Seat six-figure sums. Justice Democrats PAC has paid Middle Seat $540,000 this election cycle for digital advertising and fundraising consulting. The group was started by another Middle Seat cofounder, Zack Exley, among others.

Middle Seat was created by former members of Sen. Bernie Sanders's (I., Vt.) 2016 presidential campaign to back efforts dealing with "racial justice, climate action, immigrant rights, intersectional feminism, economic justice, and more."

Middle Seat did not respond to a request for comment on the PPP loan.

Banks With ‘Shattered’ Business Models Warned by Japan to Adapt

Japan’s financial regulator is running out of patience with regional banks that are struggling to adapt to an increasingly grim business environment.

The Financial Services Agency has targeted some local lenders for “intensive dialogue,” which could lead to regulatory action if they fail to convince it of their viability, Commissioner Toshihide Endo said. He hinted at the need for management changes at banks that don’t change their strategies. “There has been no innovation,” Endo, 61, said in an interview in Tokyo. The old practice of making money by simply taking deposits and lending them out at a higher rate “has been completely shattered. Banks should be thinking about a business model to survive. But are they?”

The discussions reflect the FSA’s growing frustration with regional banks whose profitability has long been eroding due to rock-bottom interest rates and stagnating local economies. Now concerns are mounting that some are too weak to withstand the coronavirus-fueled recession and may eventually need to be rescued or delisted. The pandemic has “shortened the time frame” for banks to tackle their problems since it will only worsen the predicament of local businesses, Endo said. He urged them to help corporate clients adapt, not just by lending money but also by giving strategic advice.

Japan has more than 100 regional banks. Endo didn’t identify or disclose the number under scrutiny but said the FSA started talks with them even before the outbreak struck. The conversations stem from regulatory changes last year that enable the agency to take action against banks deemed lacking sustainable business models even when they meet capital requirements or other narrow measures of financial soundness.

Failure to convince the FSA of their long-term viability could lead it to impose business improvement orders, a tool that carries a heavy stigma in Japan and is normally reserved for rule violations. Nomura Holdings Inc., for example, received one last year for an information leak and lost underwriting deals as a result.

Endo questioned whether some local bank managers have the ability to push through the needed changes. Most bank executives have risen through the ranks, and while some have come to realize the challenges, others may need to step aside in favor of external managers, he said.

“It’s impossible for them to change the business model,” he said. “So the question is whether they can see that they aren’t cut out for it and bring in outside talent.” Endo’s sense of urgency can be traced back to his early career as a Finance Ministry official during Japan’s financial crisis in the late 1990s, when the government was forced to spend trillions of yen bailing out lenders. He has said the meltdown could have been less dire if there had been more frank exchanges during the asset-price bubble that led to it.

Asked whether smaller banks should remain publicly traded when their declining profits could be used for capital rather than dividends, Endo said the agency isn’t in a position to tell banks to delist.

“But if top management seriously consider the implications of staying listed, I think there will be many questions,” he said. In the past, going public itself could have been a goal, but that’s no longer the case, he said. “It also costs money to stay listed.”

Endo has spent two years as commissioner, a typical length of service. He is set to be succeeded by Ryozo Himino soon, Kyodo reported on Tuesday. An FSA official declined to comment.

Separately, Endo expressed support for efforts to boost Tokyo’s standing as a global financial hub, but said the idea faces challenges. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party recently began debating a proposal to attract financial firms and workers that may be looking at alternatives to Hong Kong following China’s clampdown there.

Endo said that while Japan’s relatively high taxes are an issue, a bigger question is whether the country presents enough of an opportunity to generate profits.

“I hope Tokyo becomes a city with a big presence in finance,” he said. “But for that to happen it needs to become a place where people want to do business even if taxes are high and English isn’t spoken.”

US-Based Airlines Seeking $25 Billion Federal Loan As Air Travel Dwindles During Coronavirus

Five of the largest U.S. airlines have signed letters of intent to receive part of a $25 billion federal loan under the CARES Act as they struggle to recover amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The air carriers include Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines, which have already received $25 billion in payroll aid. Last week, several other airlines also signed letters of intent, including American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Sky West Airlines, and Spirit Airlines.

The letters of intent set the terms of the extended loans with the Treasury Department and will provide funds to the airlines with warrants, equity interest and certain other requirements. The airlines are required to maintain employment levels and limit employee compensation, dividends and share repurchases.

“The major U.S. airlines play a vital role in our economy and are critical to domestic and international travel and commerce,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. “These airlines are among the companies most heavily affected by the disruptions to social and economic activity caused by the pandemic."

“Treasury’s authority under the CARES Act to provide up to $25 billion in liquidity to passenger air carriers and related businesses will help preserve America’s aviation industry while also protecting taxpayers. We look forward to working with the airlines to finalize agreements and provide the airlines the ability to access these loans if they so choose," Mnuchin said.

The airline industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus as passenger counts dwindled due to the pandemic. The travel industry has increased to some degree over the last two months as travel restrictions ease, but states such as New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, are requiring 14-day quarantine periods for passengers coming from hotspot areas, a source told Reuters.

CBS announced Tuesday that showrunner Peter Lenkov had been fired after an investigation into claims that he promoted a toxic work environment.

The Hollywood Reporter and Vanity Fair reported that Lenkov would cease working for two shows at the network, “Magnum P.I.” and “MacGyver,” and would end an overall deal with CBS Television Studios that had a year left on the contract.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – More than 230 scientists and infectious disease experts, from around the world, published an open letter in a scientific journal called Clinical Infectious Diseases.

They claim, whether propelled into the air by a sneeze or by someone simply breathing, the coronavirus is airborne gliding through spaces for an extended period of time.

At Mayor John Cooper’s COVID-19 task force briefing Tuesday, Dr. James Hildreth explained the findings. “Breathing the exhaled air from an infected person in a closed environment for more than a few minutes,” he said, “Results in infection by the virus.”

The letter goes on to explain that an infected person, speaking normally, can expel micro droplets.

“Which is less than a tenth of a diameter of a human hair,” explained Dr. Hildreth. Those can travel up to 40 feet infecting someone clear across the room.

These findings differ from the World Health Organization’s recent guidance that states infection occurs though droplets or larger particles. The WHO claims airborne transmission of the virus is possible only after medical procedures which produce tiny aerosols.

In a briefing Tuesday, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove the WHO technical lead stated, “We’re also looking at the possible role of airborne transmission in other settings where you have particularly close settings. Where you have poor ventilation. We will be releasing our brief in the coming days.”

The open letter calls for changes in indoor ventilation which would incorporate outdoor air to limit re-circulation particularly in public buildings, work environments, schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. As well as the following, “Supply general ventilation with airborne infection controls such as local exhaust, UV lights, and highly efficient filtration,” said Dr. Hildreth.

FDA warns against using 5 more hand sanitizers found to contain methanol

(CNN) — The US Food and Drug Administration has added five hand sanitizers to its list of products that have tested positive for a toxic chemical.

These additional hand sanitizer products tested positive for methanol, which is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through skin or ingested.

The FDA’s discovery comes just two weeks after the agency advised consumers not to use nine hand sanitizers manufactured by the Mexican company Eskbiochem SA, because samples had tested positive for methanol.

Exposure to significant amounts of methanol can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.

Anyone exposed to these hand sanitizers should seek immediate treatment, the FDA warns.

The five hand sanitizers added to the FDA’s list are:

Transliquid Technologies’ Mystic Shield Protection Hand Sanitizer

Soluciones Cosmeticas’ Bersih Hand Sanitizer Gel Fragrance Free

Tropicosmeticos’ Britz Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 70%

These have all been manufactured in Mexico as well.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that proper hand hygiene is an effective response to Covid-19, and the agency recommends using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol.

U.S. Military Technology Sold by Israel To China Upsets Asian Power Balance

Israel's Lavi fighter-bomber was designed to be one of the deadliest weapons in the air. However, it now has been revealed that after Israel discontinued the largely U.S.-funded project, it sold China the plans for the Lavi and the associated secret U.S. technology. This has enabled the Chinese to build their own version of this new generation of fighter aircraft.

The illegal transfer of plans for the Lavi aircraft from Tel Aviv to Beijing first became known by the Pentagon when an American surveillance satellite orbiting over China spotted several new fighter planes on the runway of a Chinese air base traditionally used for the test and evaluation of prototype aircraft. Imagery experts at the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) created rough sketches of the jet, then processed the graphic data through high-speed supercomputers in order to obtain three-dimensional representations of the prototype Chinese fighter planes.

CIA officials specializing in aviation technology were stunned at the 3-D images generated by the computers. China's newest fighter jet was in fact a copy of the Israeli Lavi, which itself was modeled upon the U.S. F-16 Fighting Falcon multi-role aircraft.

Although Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), Israel's biggest state-owned manufacturer of arms and defense technology, was the Lavi's prime contractor, nearly 90 percent of the Lavi was funded by the Pentagon. This is just one astonishing aspect of the story of the U.S.-Israeli aircraft, the evolution of which was almost as Byzantine as its surprise ending as the most formidable weapon in China's military arsenal.

The Lavi program, as conceived in the early 1980s by Israeli military planners and their supporters in the Pentagon and Congress, was intended as an exceedingly generous gift from America to the people of Israel. The Pentagon never had any intention of including the Lavi in its own military aviation fleet.

The thinking among U.S. Defense Department officials was that the United States, having provided Israel for two decades with some of America's best fighter aircraft—including F-4 Phantoms, F-15 Eagles and F-16 Fighting Falcons—now should give the Jewish state the ability to manufacture its own state-of-the-art fighter planes.

It took American military officials very little time to decide which American fighter plane should serve as the model for the Lavi. They chose the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

The F-16 was—and still is—the American fighter plane most sought after by foreign governments. Compact and with a highly maneuverable design, it has proven itself in air-to-air combat and air-to-surface attack.

Couple Who Painted Over Black Lives Matter Lettering on California Street Charged With HATE CRIME

The California couple caught on video painting over a Black Lives Matter mural in Martinez on the Fourth of July are being charged with a hate crime by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office.

The tacky bright yellow Black Lives Matter painting was approved and paid for by the city.

Nichole Anderson and David Nelson have been charged with three misdemeanors for the painting, meanwhile hundreds if not thousands of vandals and looters have gone free during the unrest. The pair are each charged with Vandalism Under $400, Violation of Civil Rights, and Possession of Tools to Commit Vandalism or Graffiti.

“The narrative of police brutality. The narrative of oppression. The narrative of racism — it’s a lie,” the man told an upset onlooker.

“There is no oppression. There is no racism,” he said. “It’s a leftist lie.”

As the man filmed the people gathering, the woman bravely painted over the massive yellow letters with a roller of black paint.

“Keep this sh-t in f-cking New York, this is not happening in my town,” the woman yelled at someone who was calling the couple racist for their peaceful demonstration.

How a Photo of a Vehicle on Social Media Helped Detectives Nab a Child Predator

Big Bear Lake, CALIF. — On November 20, 2019, Detective R. Weddel from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station opened an investigation on a case for possession of child pornography after receiving information from the tipline of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Images of under age children engaged in sexual acts were reported to be posted on a social media account with the profile name of Edgar Diaz. A search warrant for the identified profile was obtained and the account was accessed. Detective Weddel scoured through thousands of pages on the social media account which contained images, group chats, messages and IP address logs. A photograph of a vehicle shown on the social media account revealed a California license plate. A record check of the license plate confirmed the vehicle was registered to Edgar Perez Diaz and listed an address in the 700 block of Knickerbocker Road in Big Bear Lake.

Additional search warrants were obtained for subscriber information acquired from Diaz’s social media account. Through investigation, two additional possible addresses were located for Diaz, both in the 400 block of Georgia Street, Big Bear Lake. Surveillance was conducted on multiple dates at varying times to determine an exact address for Diaz.

On April 16, 2020, Detective Weddel and deputies from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Diaz’s residence in the 400 block of Georgia Street, Big Bear Lake. Multiple electronic devices and external storage drives belonging to Diaz and believed to contain illicit pornographic images were seized. A further search warrant for the storage devices was obtained, and a forensic analysis was subsequently conducted on the devices by the Sheriff’s Department’s High-Tech Crimes Detail. A lengthy and thorough investigation resulted in thousands of media files ultimately being recovered from Diaz’s devices, including over 600 images and videos depicting prepubescent minor male and female children engaged in sexual acts.

Following the months-long investigation, the results of the forensic analysis were provided to Detective Weddel. Due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic during the investigative process, it was unknown whether Edgar Perez Diaz was employed or if he still lived at the previously identified residences. Surveillance was again conducted on multiple dates at varying times. Shortly after 6:15 a.m. on July 7, 2020, Edgar Perez Diaz was located at his house in the 400 block of Georgia Street in Big Bear Lake. Diaz was taken into custody without incident and booked in the Big Bear Jail on felony charges of possession of child pornography. Edgar Perez Diaz remains in custody on $75,000 bail pending an arraignment hearing scheduled for July 9 in San Bernardino County Superior Court.

California Attorney General Files His 85th Lawsuit Against The Trump Administration

Attorney General Becerra Leads Multistate Lawsuit Against Secretary DeVos’ Attempt to Siphon Pandemic Relief Funds Away from Public Schools / PRESS RELEASE

SACRAMENTO – California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel are today leading a coalition of six attorneys general in a lawsuit against U.S. Department of Education (Department) Secretary Betsy DeVos’ unlawful attempt to siphon pandemic relief funds away from K-12 public schools. The lawsuit follows the latest effort by Secretary DeVos to undermine congressional intent through the promulgation of regulations that unlawfully reinterpret the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) and run counter to efforts to ensure that students and schools with demonstrated financial need get the resources they have been promised. As a result of the interim final rule, tens of millions of dollars in California alone could be diverted away from taxpayer-funded public schools in our poorest school districts to private institutions — in violation of the requirements established by Congress, the Administrative Procedure Act, and the U.S. Constitution.

“Again, and again, the Trump Administration takes action to steal from the poor and give to the rich,” said Attorney General Becerra. “Whether it’s President Trump or Secretary DeVos, we won’t stand by when the education of our children or the rule of law is under threat. Congress set clear parameters on how to spend this money in order to confront the devastating effects of a pandemic on our schools. We’re going to court to make sure it ends up where it’s needed — the futures of our children are at stake.”

“This pandemic has exacerbated the inequities that impact our most vulnerable students, and our public schools need every last dollar to safely and effectively resume learning,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. “We fully support this legal action because we agree it is unconscionable to divert funds from the students who need these resources the most.”

On March 27, 2020, Congress enacted the CARES Act in response to the ongoing pandemic and its impacts across the country. Under the act, Secretary DeVos is required to allocate funding to help schools prevent, prepare for, and respond to COVID-19. As part of the CARES Act, Congress set forth a formula, through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, for the distribution of $13.2 billion in aid to K-12 schools nationwide — with about $1.5 billion for public schools in California. As part of the act, aid to K-12 schools is required to be distributed in line with Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (Title I). Title I funds are generally aimed at aiding children from low-income families across the country. Under the CARES Act, private schools are only eligible for funds in certain circumstances in line with Title I criteria. However, in direct contravention of Congressional intent, the Department’s interim final rule blows up the legislated mechanism by requiring the inclusion of private schools based on the total population they serve, instead of income as dictated by the CARES Act. Moreover, the Department admits that this rule allows private schools — with tuitions more akin to private colleges — to demand these emergency funds, leaving the poorest school districts with less. In the lawsuit, the coalition asserts that the Department’s interim final rule unlawfully exceeds its authority, undermines Congressional intent, fails to adequately justify its decision in breach of the Administrative Procedure Act, and violates the U.S. Constitution.

Attorney General Becerra is committed to protecting the rights of students in California and across the country. In June, the Attorney General filed suit to challenge Secretary DeVos’ unlawful new rule that weakens protections for survivors of sexual violence in schools. In April, he opposed a federal proposal that would create loopholes that favor high sodium foods like pizza, french fries, and burgers in school meals. Last year, Attorney General Becerra secured a historic desegregation agreement with the Sausalito Marin City School District. He also reached an agreement with the Stockton Unified School District and its police department to address discriminatory treatment of minority students and students with disabilities.

In filing the lawsuit, Attorney General Becerra is joined by the attorneys general of Michigan, Maine, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

Wikipedia Editors Sanitize the Page of Potential Biden VP Kamala Harris

An article in the Intercept last week reported that a Wikipedia editor was scrubbing the page of former Democratic Presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), considered a prominent member of the shortlist to be Joe Biden’s Vice Presidental pick. The piece mentioned changes such as removing a past campaign finance scandal and Harris’ record as a hard-line prosecutor. Changes not mentioned include removals of the alleged role nepotism played in her early political career and significant favorable additions about Harris.

Other Wikipedia editors have begun working to undo the changes made to the Harris page, although many details remain missing. On Twitter, the Wikipedia editor responsible for most removals was identified as Bao Nguyen, a former volunteer organizer for the Harris campaign. Similarly, editors previously created pages for fellow Presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg and Andrew Yang without disclosing their connections to them.

The Intercept article by Aida Chavez notes that in 2016, editors had been heavily involved in contributing to the article on Tim Kaine prior to him being announced as Hillary Clinton’s Vice Presidential pick. As a result, a user on Reddit created a script to monitor for activity about prospective VP picks for Biden and noticed significant editing of the page for Kamala Harris. Other Reddit users identified a single editor by the username “Bnguyen1114” as the primary party responsible for the activity.

Chavez delved into the editor’s activity on the Harris page and how he removed content potentially unfavorable to Harris. Among the edits noted was the removal of a paragraph regarding her defense of Orange County prosecutors implicated in widespread misconduct, which Nguyen claimed was removed for “proof-reading” yet not restored until after the Intercept piece. Nguyen also removed details about a campaign finance violation involving Harris’ campaign for District Attorney, removing most criticism of defenses Harris gave for the violation. A quote from Harris stating “it is not progressive to be soft on crime” was also removed by Nguyen, but restored shortly after the Intercept article.

Not mentioned were other removals of unflattering material by Nguyen. These included details about Harris benefiting in her early political career from a relationship with future San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, then the Speaker of the California Assembly, who she dated. Also excluded were the substantial salaries she earned at positions to which Brown appointed her and a quote from Brown’s mayoral campaign manager about how the relationship benefited Harris. Another editor subsequently removed all mention of Brown, claiming “sexist” framing. Mention of Brown’s appointments was later restored, though only noting them and briefly stating she and Brown were in a relationship at the time.

One other detail removed involved how Harris handled an investigation into the death of Mitrice Richardson, a black woman who, after being detained by the Malibu sheriff’s department for not paying her bill at a diner, was released in the middle of the night without a car or phone and was later found dead in a canyon. Harris eventually closed an investigation she had opened into the death under pressure from the public, stating there was insufficient evidence for criminal charges. Mention of the Richardson case is still absent from the article.

DOJ Gives Flynn More Documents ‘Exonerating’ Him of ‘Knowing False Statement,’ His Lawyer Says

Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, former adviser to President Donald Trump, has obtained several documents from the Justice Department (DOJ) that further prove his innocence, said his lawyer, former federal prosecutor Sidney Powell.

The documents include the handwritten notes of former Deputy Assistant Attorney General Tashina Gauhar from a Jan. 25, 2017, meeting, former FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok’s notes from that same meeting, an internal DOJ document dated Jan. 30, 2017, and then-Acting Attorney General Dana Boente’s handwritten notes, dated March 30, 2017, according to a notice (pdf) filed by the DOJ with the federal court in the District of Columbia on July 7.

The documents, not released publicly due to the court’s protective order, were discovered by U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Jensen, who was tasked in January by Attorney General William Barr to review the Flynn case.

“The new production by Mr. Jensen includes 14 pages of notes and portions of a draft DOJ document—further exonerating General Flynn not only on the point of materiality but also of any intent to deceive or knowing false statement,” Powell told The Epoch Times via email.

“It corroborates some information we already had—but from new sources—and it reveals some new information that has been withheld for three years.”

Flynn, former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency under the Obama administration and former national security adviser to Trump, pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying to the FBI in an interview almost a year prior.

In January, he moved to withdraw his plea. In May, the DOJ moved to dismiss the case after the Jensen review uncovered documents suggesting the FBI questioned Flynn to elicit false statements from him, which isn’t a proper investigative purpose.

District Judge Emmet Sullivan, who is presiding over the case, took the unusual step of holding back his approval of the motion to dismiss, and even appointed an amicus curiae (friend of court) to argue against the dismissal.

Backed by the DOJ, Flynn asked the District of Columbia Appeals Court for an extraordinary intervention (writ of mandamus), arguing that Sullivan doesn’t have the authority to delay or question the DOJ’s motion in these circumstances.

A three-judge panel on the appeals court ordered Sullivan to accept the dismissal on June 24, but Sullivan has yet to comply. Appeals court decisions take three weeks to go into effect, giving Sullivan time to ask the whole court (12 judges) to review the decision. A majority of the judges would have to agree.

In the meantime, the Jensen review continues and as long as the case is open, Flynn is still slated to the findings.

“The longer Judge Sullivan takes to dismiss the case, the more stuff they owe me,” Powell said, during an interview with The Epoch Times’ Jan Jekielek. “There’s still a long list of things that I know are there.”

The DOJ’s most recent court filing says that “additional documents may be forthcoming.“

Flynn was originally targeted by the FBI in August 2016 for alleged ties to Russia. After four months, the FBI moved to close the case, saying it found no derogatory information on Flynn.

Strzok intervened in January 2017 to keep the case open at the behest of the FBI leadership, contemporaneous text messages show.

His notes from that time indicate that then-President Barack Obama told the FBI that “the right people” should be on the Flynn case, while then-Vice President Joe Biden brought up the idea of a Logan Act violation.

The Logan Act is an obscure 18th-century law prohibiting private citizens from conducting diplomacy with foreign nations without White House approval. Nobody has ever been successfully prosecuted under the statute and its constitutionality has been questioned, given the emphasis on First Amendment rights in the past decades.

According to the DOJ’s motion to dismiss, the FBI kept the case open using the justification that Flynn violated the Logan Act in his calls with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian Ambassador to the United States at the time.

Flynn asked the ambassador in December 2016 for Russia to only respond reciprocally to Obama’s expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats less than a month before leaving office.

After Strzok and Supervisory Special Agent Joe Pientka interviewed Flynn on Jan. 24, 2017, Strzok said in a report from the interview that Flynn denied he made such a request to Kislyak.

Powell has said Flynn didn’t lie and, at most, didn’t remember.

Number of GOP senators opting to skip Republican National Convention grows

The number of GOP senators who will not be attending the Republican National Convention is steadily increasing. At least five Republican senators have decided to skip the event next month, including Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, who announced his decision on Monday. On Tuesday, Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee joined him in sharing that they have no intentions to attend. The convention, scheduled for late August, was originally supposed to take place in North Carolina. However, the party decided to move the event, during which President Trump will formally accept the Republican nomination for president, to Florida after North Carolina's governor expressed doubts over whether the state would be able to host a full convention due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Grassley will be missing the convention for the first time since he was elected to the Senate 40 years ago in 1980. He and Alexander, ages 86 and 80 respectively, belong to an age group in which the coronavirus has the most severe effect on patients. Collins told CBS News that she will not be attending the convention because she has never attended the party's convention during a year in which she was up for reelection. The city of Jacksonville has issued a mandate requiring people to wear masks indoors. It is unclear if those attending the convention will be granted an exception under the mandate if it's still in effect by the convention date.

Mexico's Pemex plans $22.4 billion debt swap

Mexico’s Petroleos Mexicanos said on Tuesday it will offer a swap for $22.4 billion worth of bonds maturing between 2027 and 2060 as the state oil firm seeks to manage its massive debt load.

The company, known as Pemex, which had financial debts of nearly $105 billion at the end of March, announced the swap in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The document did not specify when the offer would go into effect.

Pemex did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Companies often conduct debt swaps to manage financial risk.

Last autumn, Pemex carried out a slew of refinancing operations worth $20.1 billion, comprising bond issuance worth $7.5 billion plus a repurchase and debt swap valued at some $8.7 billion, and another debt swap worth $3.9 billion.

Mexico’s Mega Oil Hedge Cost “Around” $1 Billion

The largest oil hedge in the world cost Mexico “around $1 billion” for 2020, Mexico’s Finance Minister Arturo Herrera said on Thursday, according to Reuters. Herrera had said the cost of the hedge would be revealed on Thursday.

Herrera disclosed the rough cost of the hedge at the prompting of Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. For 2019, Mexico spent $1.23 billion, locking in a fixed price of $55 per barrel. Herrera failed to disclose the actual figure in order to keep market players in the dark as to when Mexico was hedging. The average cost of the hedging program is $1.2 billion, according to Deputy Finance Minister Gabriel Yorio.

Under this hedging program, Mexico buys put options from Wall Street investment banks to sell hundreds of millions of barrels of oil. With these put options, Mexico is granted the right—but not the obligation—to sell its oil at a predetermined price for the upcoming year. In 2015 and 2016, Mexico made out like bandits when oil prices tanked, as the contracted upfront price for oil ended up being much higher than market price.

Mexico’s hedge is the largest annual oil hedge in the world, and is a major source of revenue for Mexico, accounting for 4% of the country’s GDP. The hedge typically ranges between 200 million and 300 million barrels.

The 2020 hedge locked in a price of $49 per barrel, according to Reuters—significantly lower than the $55 per barrel price that it hedged at for last year.

The Maya crude blend—Mexico’s flagship grade–is currently trading at $54.81 per barrel—down from $64.48 in April 2019, but up from $45.05 in August. This year’s hedging formula went through an overhaul after two decades no changes, slowing the hedge in the latter part of 2019, causing some to question whether the hedge would happen at all.

“You’re not there yet, so you have an opportunity, a window to get your arms around this and to prevent it from getting worse,” Dr. Fauci said. “It’s not to the point where it’s out of hand and you know, very difficult to control. So you have a window of opportunity here, that as a state, you should not, you should, you know, take advantage of that window of opportunity.”

Fauci further characterized taking comfort in news about declining mortality as an empty comfort, claiming, “It’s a false narrative to take comfort in a lower rate of death. There’s so many other things that are very dangerous and bad about this virus,” and warning the public not to “get yourself into false complacency.”

Jones echoed Fauci’s concern, saying:

I think we do a disservice sometimes by focusing on the total amount of deaths, because we’ve seen a rise and that’s a problem for sure. But as the percentage of deaths may come down, that does not mean that this virus is not still very, very serious. That it disrupts education, disrupts businesses, disrupts lives, because it still is. It still will be deadly.

But I don’t want to get into a situation where we just accept a lower number of deaths as if this is the new normal. We’ve still got to do everything we can to get this virus snuffed out.

So just because deaths as a percentage of total cases may be coming down, it’s no reason at all to kind of let our foot off the gas when it comes to our social distancing, wearing masks and trying to control this virus.

Even amid what Fauci called a “resurgence” of the disease, he did admit to some optimism about the future. “The younger you are, the better you do and the less likely that you’re going to get seriously ill and die,” he said. “Number two, we definitely are better now at treating individuals particularly because we have a couple of therapies that work well in people with the disease.”

Despite being against “authoritarian” federal mandates regarding masks and other measures of prevention, Fauci strongly supports local measures to do the same. “The bottom line is it’s not going to be one-size fits all,” he said. “It’s going to depend on the level of infection in the community.”

China Inks Military Deal With Iran Under Secretive 25-Year Plan

Last August, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Zarif, paid a visit to his China counterpart, Wang Li, to present a roadmap on a comprehensive 25-year China-Iran strategic partnership that built upon a previous agreement signed in 2016. Many of the key specifics of the updated agreement were not released to the public at the time but were uncovered by OilPrice.com at the time. Last week, at a meeting in Gilan province, former Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad alluded to some of the secret parts of this deal in public for the first time, stating that: “It is not valid to enter into a secret agreement with foreign parties without considering the will of the Iranian nation and against the interests of the country and the nation, and the Iranian nation will not recognize it.” According to the same senior sources closely connected to Iran’s Petroleum Ministry who originally outlined the secret element of the 25-year deal, not only is the secret element of that deal going ahead but China has also added in a new military element, with enormous global security implications.

One of the secret elements of the deal signed last year is that China will invest US$280 billion in developing Iran’s oil, gas, and petrochemicals sectors. This amount will be front-loaded into the first five-year period of the new 25-year deal, and the understanding is that further amounts will be available in each subsequent five year period, provided that both parties agree. There will be another US$120 billion of investment, which again can be front-loaded into the first five-year period, for upgrading Iran’s transport and manufacturing infrastructure, and again subject to increase in each subsequent period should both parties agree. In exchange for this, to begin with, Chinese companies will be given the first option to bid on any new – or stalled or uncompleted – oil, gas, and petrochemicals projects in Iran. China will also be able to buy any and all oil, gas, and petchems products at a minimum guaranteed discount of 12 per cent to the six-month rolling mean average price of comparable benchmark products, plus another 6 to 8 per cent of that metric for risk-adjusted compensation. Additionally, China will be granted the right to delay payment for up to two years and, significantly, it will be able to pay in soft currencies that it has accrued from doing business in Africa and the Former Soviet Union states. “Given the exchange rates involved in converting these soft currencies into hard currencies that Iran can obtain from its friendly Western banks, China is looking at another 8 to 12 per cent discount, which means a total discount of around 32 per cent for China on all oil gas, and petchems purchases,” one of the Iran sources underlined.

COVID-19 Drug Could Be More Effective than Rushed Vaccine - Expert on India Setting ‘Wrong’ Deadline

With 11.4 million COVID cases across the globe, drug manufacturers are racing against the clock to develop a vaccine and bring life and the economy back to their normal course. Among 140 companies, Bharat Biotech expressed confidence in being able to make their vaccine ready by the country's independence day on 15 Aug.

India's apex medical research body Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) announced the launch of the ‘first’ indigenous Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin for public use by 15 August 2020, triggering commotion among experts for setting an “unrealistic target” that is not in line with rigorous scientific standards.

“It is envisaged to launch the vaccine for public health use latest by August 15, 2020 after completion of all clinical trials… You are strictly advised to fast-track all approvals related to initiation of the clinical trial, and ensure that the subject enrolment is initiated no later than July 7, 2020,” ICMR stated on 3 July.

However, the scientific community finds the launch date of the vaccine unviable, saying even if the process is fast-tracked, it is "nearly impossible" to launch the vaccine by 15 August. ICMR is also aiming to complete two-stage trials in 38 days after the recruitment of participants for clinical trials.

Shahid Jameel, a virologist well-known for his research on the Hepatitis-E virus, agreed with the persistent view that giving out a set date for launch was "wrong and unprecedented". He told Sputnik that rather than focusing on a vaccine, a drug with 30-50% efficacy in treating coronavirus could reduce the overwhelming burden when looking at the current scenario.

“Developing a vaccine is fairly a long and rigorous process even if we fast-track it during these unprecedented times. Even if India develops a drug that is 50 percent or 30 percent efficacious, then it will help the country in reducing the burden to some extent,” Jameel told Sputnik.

He explains that Bharat Biotech India (BBIL) in collaboration with ICMR’s National Institute of Virology (NIV) is working to produce an “inactivated” vaccine which can sometimes make the disease worse. An inactive vaccine is one that is made by using particles of a Covid-19 virus that have been killed, making them unable to infect or replicate. However, parts of the virus can induce an immune reaction.

“It is seen in some case of respiratory virus, inactivated vaccines have actually made the disease worse. It is something to be worried about. You will not see that adequately in phase one and two, as they are short phases. In an inactivated vaccine, you are not giving it enough time to naturally expose or naturally infect. That is the downside,” he said.

Risk-Benefit Judgement

Within a week after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting with officials to review preparations for a vaccine against COVID-19, ICMR alerted all 12 institutes engaged in human trials to meet the “timeline without lapse”, adding that “non-compliance will be viewed very seriously”.

The communiqué issued on 2 July added that it is the “top priority project” and is being monitored at the "highest level of government".

Jameel says it is for the regulator, Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), to make a risk-benefit judgement – where it is accessed based on studies that the benefits of a vaccine are greater than the risks. But it is unusual that a developing partner tells the clinical trial site involved in scientific procedures that it “must complete” a project by a certain timeline.

“Launch of vaccine by 15 August is impossible and it was unprecedented. It shouldn’t have happened in the first place,” said Jameel.

Coins in both product options are circulating finish, but have never been placed in circulation. The coin rolls are wrapped in United States Mint paper coin wrap marked with a “P” or “D” for the mint of origin and “$10” for the face value. The bags are marked with a “P” and “D” for the mint of origin and “$100” for the face value of the contents.

The Kennedy Half Dollar was introduced in 1964 to commemorate President John F. Kennedy following his assassination in 1963. The coin’s obverse (heads) features the original 1964 design of President Kennedy with the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2020.” The reverse (tails) design is based on the Presidential Coat of Arms. United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) operates a small number of Boeing C-32B passenger jet aircraft, providing global airlift for U.S. government crisis response activities. These may include U.S. State Department Foreign Emergency Support Teams (FEST), which deploy in response to terrorism incidents around the world. They may also fly in support of CIA Special Activities. The C-32B has been associated with the 150th Special Operations Squadron out of Joint Base McGuire, NJ (previously designated as 227th Special Operations Flight ) and the 486th Flight Test Squadron out of Eglin AFB, FL. These are highly secretive units, with little information publicly available about their activities. The aircraft have been spotted in a plain white paint scheme, with minimal markings. They appear to change serial numbers many times - no doubt an attempt to keep a low profile.

A 2005-P Kennedy half dollar is not a rare coin by any stretch of the imagination, but examples were only made available to collectors. A footnote in A Guide Book of United States Coins (the “Red Book”) explains, “The U.S. Mint produces circulation-quality half dollar coins at its Philadelphia and Denver facilities each year. Since 2002, these coins have been made available to the public only through direct purchase from the Mint in Mint sets and rolls of 20 coins or bags of 200 coins. They are not available through banks for general distribution, and are sold by the Mint for approximately 1.5 to 2 times their face value.”

The 2005-P Kennedy half dollar has a mintage of 3,800,000 and the Denver Mint counterpart’s mintage is 3,500,000.

PCGS grades half dollars struck for circulation during this era as Mint State, and calls those released in Uncirculated Coin sets “Specimen” strikings. The bulk of the certified Mint State population for the 2005 issue hovers at the MS-65 to MS-66 level, with PCGS grading 16 in MS-67, eight in MS-68 and two in MS-69 that are tied as the finest-known. One of these top-graded circulation strike 2005-P Kennedy half dollars sold at a June 21 GreatCollections auction for $1,915.86.

In contrast to the rarity of the finest-graded circulation strikes, PCGS has certified, of the Specimen strikes in top grades, 580 2005-P half dollars as Specimen 69, and seven as a perfect Specimen 70.

Just one tiny suggestion, for those still a little new to coin collecting, it would have been helpful to add that the Uncirculated coins were produced with a satin finish from 2005 - 2010. Therefore, a completist would have bought the circulation quality Kennedy roles that year and sought in pocket change the best examples of circulation strike coinage in other denominations (which was possible then as all dollar coins could be found in circulation).

Has Coin World done an article on the possibilities these years afforded for completing their collections and the grading difficulties? THis article now affirms what I have been doing these past months - trying to find in pocket change high quality circulation quality quarters from 1999 - onward and encapsulate them. I thought encapsulating the quarters was a bit of overkill but now for those quarters minted from 2005 - 2010 at least, it might be worth the occasional effort in the long run.

TOKYO – Former Nissan Motor Chairman Carlos Ghosn sent over $860,000 to a company related to one of the two men alleged to have helped him flee to Lebanon last year while on bail awaiting trial in Japan on charges of financial misconduct, new court documents filed by prosecutors show.

The document was filed by prosecutors as ex-Green Beret Michael Taylor and his son Peter Taylor try to gain their release on bail, part of their battle against extradition to Japan for their alleged role in Ghosn's escape. The Taylors were arrested in May in the state of Massachusetts following a request from the Japanese government. A federal judge on Tuesday rejected the Taylors' motions to quash their arrest warrants.

The documents show two money transfers in October totaling $862,500 from a Paris bank account that was connected to Ghosn, to Promote Fox, a company managed by Peter Taylor, according to records filed by prosecutors to U.S. District Court in Massachusetts. It is the first documentation demonstrating alleged financial ties to the former auto tycoon.

The money-transfer records were included in a formal extradition request made by the Japanese authorities.

Portland Protesters Hit with Federal Charges

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon on Tuesday unveiled federal charges against protesters who allegedly physically assaulted federal law enforcement and vandalized a federal courthouse during ongoing demonstrations sparked by the death of George Floyd. NBC 16 reports: The federal government confirmed Monday night that its agents took seven people into custody outside the federal courthouse between Thursday and early Monday morning. Their charges vary from assault on a federal officer to destruction of federal property and creating a hazard on federal property. All seven appeared in court Monday.

The U.S. Attorney in Oregon said the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse was badly damaged amid violent unrest that had occurred for 40 consecutive nights. A U.S. Attorney in Oregon said: U.S. Marshals Service deputies and officers from the Federal Protective Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection working to protect the courthouse have been subjected to threats; aerial fireworks including mortars; high intensity lasers targeting officers’ eyes; thrown rocks, bottles, and balloons filled with paint from demonstrators while performing their duties.

Rowan Olsen, 19, was slapped with the most charges and has pleaded not guilty. Court papers filed Monday allege Olsen used his body to hold the doors to the courthouse shut to prevent federal officers from coming out to confront demonstrators and caused the glass to shatter. Other protesters then threw fireworks inside the courthouse and at federal officers, starting a small fire in the entryway, according to court papers. Demonstrators are also accused of shining laser beams in the eyes of federal officers, assaulting officers with a shield and destroying a security camera. U.S. Attorney Billy J. Williams said in a statement that U.S. Marshals Service deputies and officers from the Federal Protective Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection have all been on duty protecting the courthouse.
