Hi. I'm the new board owner of /miku/.

I was the volunteer for this board (Tetomod), but I claimed the board because the board owner became inactive for two weeks.

This thread is for any questions that you might have.

This thread is also for submitting custom board assets, which I will post the requirements of each.

Edit: Since the board pages 404 at times, I've decided to copy the rules to this post:

1. All threads must be related to Vocaloid and its community. Similar topics like UTAU and CeVIO are also allowed.
2. No spamming, spambots or flooding.
3. Do not post with the intention of disrupting or derailing a thread (e.g. trolling, baiting, flaming, etc.)

Remember to spoiler all NSFW content and to check the catalog before creating a new thread.
Ignore posts/threads that you don't like, and report those that break the rules.

If any of the board pages is unavailable, please do notify me by leaving a post in this thread.

I co-own the other board with another anon, It's still a smaller board than this one, so I don't think I'll have any problems yet.

No idea. The old owner didn't post very often. I don't have a way of contacting him either.

I'm actually planning on making a discussion about /miku/'s board settings, rules and cooperation with other boards next week.

Things maybe be changed, added, or removed democratically.

The requirement to vote is the same as the volunteer applications: you must have made at least one post on June 1st or before. However, everyone will be able to express any opinions or concerns even if they're new to /miku/.

I'll specify the date after the volunteer application ends (it will probably be Friday-Tuesday too).

Democracy sucks. At the time the absentee board owner showed up and made those rules, there was no problem on the board prompting their creation. Why not just remove them and not have any further drama about the rules?

If I understand correctly, your issue with the imposed rules weren't the rules themselves, but the fact that they were added spontaneously for no reason. To impose them was bad enough, but just removing them is just as bad.

To be honest, I don't like the rules either, and I'll probably propose a simpler set of rules and getting rid of the current rules altogether. I still want to hear the opinions of other anons though, that's why I'm doing it this way.

I also want to discuss board settings (like the bump limit, board flags, whether to keep oekaki or not, etc.), so I still need to hear opinions before I change anything.

Please, consider this a chance to make /miku/ a better board.

Since I won't post here under the current rules and this quorum will be weeks from now I'm overwhelmingly likely to forget about it. I don't think that removing arbitrary rules is "just as bad" as imposing them. Furthermore, discussions and votes that provide the opportunity of imposing rules just attract control freaks.

>I won't post here under the current rules

As I said, no rules are being enforced for now. Any thread that is Vocaloid related (even if it is porn dump, loli, shota, etc.) won't be deleted, and I won't ban anyone for making it even if the current rules stay (they probably won't though).

It will be just 6 days from now. If you don't want to participate, then that's your loss. The only people who were 100% okay with the current rules (the old board owner and the "quality rule" poster) haven't made a single post in almost two months.

If even though you are given this opportunity you decide to leave /miku/, then I have nothing else to say.

Salty because people might change my design without really thinking about it. (Just like the former board owner ruined the design when they changed the post colour without considering the colour composition and scheme.)

That said, I have some issues with the mikuchan designs and I urge people to think about changing the design. Too saturated colours and lack of composition being most blatant.

I'll throw in some questions for the FAQ. It'd be nice if some could help me by answering some of them or asking more Vocaloid related questions:

>What is Vocaloid?

>Who are the 'Vocaloids'?

>How do I find Vocaloid songs?

>Where can I listen to the latest Vocaloid songs?

>Where can I get Vocaloid songs?

>What is MMD (MikuMikuDance)?

8ch Minecraft

Vanilla pvp server: tr.ipcod.es:25565

Modded server: tr.ipcod.es:25566

————————————–

Download MultiMC (It's open source), then you need to begin the install process.

Click Add Instance (Top left)

Change the version to 1.7.10 then click Import Modpack

Paste http://transfer.sh/kCXpy/tripcodes.zip

into the field, and click add. It will either start importing or do

nothing. If it does nothing, it's due to a current bug and you can just

download the zip file and click the three dots and browse to it and then

click add. Then launch it and connect to the server in multiplayer.

Rather than leave it as a 2spooky mystery(althought that does sound kind of fun) I'll give you the boring truth, I became ill and stopped having the time or energy to give a shit about modding an anime girl imageboard, I figured the teto mod guy would take it over, which is good since I don't have as much interest in the subject as I used to and also because I haven't visited this site in 6+ months, better to have a former mod be owner than to let spammers shit it up. CTW does have one downside: it won't save the board's CSS info. Infinity Next's CSS isn't compatible with the current 8ch CSS, so you'll have to open the saved threads in offline mode and it'll look like pic related (A thread I've saved from the 8ch bunker back in January).

No, but I saved some of the recent threads in case they're not imported correctly.

I don't think we need them, and I would only enable it if most users are okay with it.

IDs are often enabled on very active boards where there is excessive trolling or samefagging.

/miku/ doesn't have such problems yet, and while Upstairs and MM might benefit from IDs, other threads might not, and some anons might prefer to stay anonymous as much as it is possible.

It depends on whether anons want it or not. Enabling flags again could be a better alternative to IDs, since anyone has the choice to use it (or not).

Flags are cool, but don't have the benefits of IDs (actually identifying someone, filtering). And I wouldn't expect you to use them unless many people were okay with it obviously.  No.67638

I'll go ahead and give my reasons for why I think they are fine. I would be interested in why people are against them too if you care to explain.

1. Anonymity hardly exists here. Most posting is done in the upstairs/MM threads which are 99% avatarfagging anyway. It's not like it is hard to guess who is posting what anyway with how few people there are here normally. Plus several of the daily posters can already see IDs if they really want to.

2. IDs are only unique to one thread. It doesn't identify you across the entire board. I don't see it being a big deal in news/song/etc. threads since nobody would know who actually posts things unless they say who they are, the ID would just track how many posts you have made. As for the main threads, again people give away their “identity” freely anyway so I don't see the harm.

3. Filtering. This isn't a common use but one that I think is important. It is much easier to “ignore posts you don't like” if you can just turn a filter on/off as you want. There have been times when I wished this were available and I think it is a nice option to have.

4. They aren't permanent and could be turned off. As another benefit, they can make keeping track of conversations easier. That isn't always relevant but a nice thing anyway, especially when there are many people posting like during busy MM times.

TL;DR: In my opinion things would barely change and IDs offer a few benefits that would be nice to have.

I'm pro and most of my thoughts have been summarized above. The one thing I would like to add is that it can help resolve confusion, if it does arise.

If people don't want it for aesthetic/nostalgia reasons, I can code a bit of javascript that hides the IDs visually. Even if you only have passing knowledge of javascript you can easily do so.

>>67638

Filtering is practically useless in the Upstairs/MM threads, because the conversations are mostly single threaded. Filtering posts would be more efficient for your purposes at that.

The thing is that there is less people that want IDs than the ones who don't (I should have worded the question better). It's also a more delicate issue than flags, since IDs will affect all threads, including old ones.

I'm still going to give anons the chance to decide whether /miku/ should have them or not. I'm going to write board announcement that links to this post. I'm only going to count posts made in this thread.

My biggest issue with IDs is that there have been times when people have wanted to post anonymously because they had a problem, or an issue that they wanted to bring up but also remain anonymous about it.

If IDs are implemented and someone wants to post something anonymously then their options to do so are limited.

Also some posters have occasionally had fun posting anonymously with the emoji. While it isn't that important it's still something worth taking into consideration.

Flags are custom board assets that allow people to put a little icon next to their posting name if they want. They can be turned on/off or changed for each of your posts. This is an example from /v/. They can be whatever the board owner wants, so in our case it would be vocaloid themed stuff most likely. They don't really do anything, it's just another way to customize your board.

I don't see much point to them but don't care either way if they are added.

If people ever want to turn the flags on/off they can put this bit of code into the "theme" section of the options menu:

/* remove flags */

img.flag {

display: none;

}

And save it for the effect to be applied. This just hides them, and you can add or delete it as you choose. You can also replace "img.flag" with "img.emoji" to hide emojis, which can make some old posts look pretty funny.

Are you still set on having a bump limit? It seems really pointless with how small the board is. Why not just let the users have full control over if they want their posts to bump a thread? (by using sage or not)

I know you said you would consider changing it again if more people said something, but there is basically zero meta discussion that goes on here. I don't want to be the only one bringing up board setting issues but nobody else ever says anything about them.

And is there a reason for the 3 file limit on posts? It is fine for most posting but there are times when it would be great to fit more into a post, like when uploading OC stories for example.

It makes sense for the active threads to have high bump limits, but for other threads I think a lower bump limit is better, so new threads about that topic are made more often.

I'll remove the bump limit for now, and I'll ask for opinions about it later on the Upstairs thread when it's active.

>And is there a reason for the 3 file limit on posts?

The previous board owner set the file limit to 3 (see >>1277 ). You're right that this is too low for OC stories and also comic dumps, so I'll change the limit to 5 as well.

I often leave the board the way it is, unless others want me to change something about it, so thank you for posting your suggestions and opinions about the board here, and I hope that more people do it too.

Why would new threads even be needed if an older one is still being used and bumped, or is still under the post limit? You even have "check the catalog before creating a new thread" in the rules page, so doesn't that suggest you would rather not have unnecessary duplicate threads?

If a thread reached the older bump limit of 500, a user would have the choice of making a new thread without waiting for the post limit to be reached. It would also be a bit easier for those threads to load on mobile devices if the threads have less posts.

Yeah, I hadn't thought of mobile browsing. I know big threads can load very slowly on mobile and that is unfortunate. I was more concerned with saving space. Eventually things are going to fall off the catalog forever, but keeping stuff to fewer threads for similar topics can help prevent that for longer.

We have about 8 pages left, which would take about 6 months to fill.

When we get to page 20, I'd like to try to archive as many threads as possible with the help of other anons, upload them somewhere, and link them to a custom page on /miku/.

24 bit is standard for most photos, but most people won't notice the difference between 16 and 24 bit. People who do (artists, animators, photographs - people who work with images regularly) either don't mind or understand the importance of proper image encoding.

32 bit and up: most people don't have monitors to display. Very few monitors boast a colour depth beyond 16.7 million (24 bit) or 1.07 billion (30 bit) - 32 bit is 4.29 billion. This is assuming the monitors are properly calibrated, on an OS that supports 'deep' colours (30 bit and up) and they have a hefty CPU.

Pro-tip: the vast majority of professionals I asked use monitors with a colour depth of 24 bit. I personally use a 30 bit monitor, but rarely get use out of the colour depth. If you are concerned with compressing higher quality images, without losing too much quality, you can safely cap it off at 24 bit.

colour space:

Time to get cooky with science! colour spaces (not to be confused with colour models, RGB, CMYK, etc) are organizations of colours. Colours here means 'wavelength'. Simply put: a colour space is a collection of wavelengths.

In a colour space, colours are carefully organized so that the machine understand what to display. This does not mean that all colours can be displayed, however. Different devices and even applications have their own colour spaces. Some colours are displayed 'the same' by almost all devices, some are device dependent.

Becoming familiar with device-independent colours is good way to know what colours/shades can and can not be removed for optimal compression. This is especially useful if you need to knock of 'that little bit' in coloured images.

Pro-tip: practically every, visual professional works with a select set of base colours, based on colour models and colour theory, which determine what palette (base colours + shades, colour range) to use in a work. This is known as a gamut. In layman terms: artists use a few main colours from which they 'mix' the rest. A few popular examples are yellow and blue, green and purple (really), cyan-yellow-magenta and indigo-blue-yellow-orange.

If you can identify the palette of an image, you can compress colours that are at the edge of the colour range. For example: if the primary colours are fuchsia and light green, you can discard the yellow and blue undertones without sacrificing the overall colour impression.

Quick word on image scaling & interpolation:

Advanced class. "interpolation" for images is a term used to determine what algorithm to use when changing the resolution of an image - in short: a way for the machine to guess where the pixels are supposed to go. There are many, many, many different types of interpolation techniques and all of them have their use. Generally speaking though, the ones you will encounter most are:

Nearest-neighbour: replaces nearby pixels with a similair value, useful for up- AND downscaling pixelated images or images with sharp lines;

Bilinear: similar to nearest neighbour, but softens the sharp lines to make images look smoother. Images tend to look interlaced, as if weaved in strings. Useful for downscaling detailed images, or upscaling images with distinct separation between details;

Bicubic: similar to nearest neighbour, but smooths around every pixel, making the image look (relatively) fuzzy. Useful for upscaling detailed images.

Most image editing applications will offer away to further change the image while scaling. The most common techniques are sharpening and smoothing, which do what you'd expect. You will want to use sharpening on downscaled images and smoothing on upscaled images.

Pro-tip: There are other ways to interpolate scaling, some of them very refined. Don't just use whatever is presented to you and google what the best ways for your specific purpose. That said, you will rarely need a technique beyond nearest-neighbour, bilinear and bicubic.

trixxx:

Lower resolution = smaller;

Less colours = smaller;

If your image has only one alpha layer (all pixels are either fully opaque or fully transparent), use .gif to cut down on size;

For images with multiple alpha layers/values, use .png;

For already pixelated images, you can usually sacrifice colour depth;

Simple computer generated images, like MMD images, usually consist out of multiple key colours, rather than several shades. Using a selective colour range can greatly reduce file size with little or no impact;

Try downscaling your image by tiny bits to lower file size, for example going from 900xy to 800xy;

Upscaling is almost always bad. If you want a bigger image, make it big from the ground up. (The same is not true for downscaling.) Professional illustrators and graphic designers (in so far they work with image editing software) prefer to use huge canvases (4k and up) which they save at a lower resolution;

Some software is specially designed to compress with minimal quality loss. Most of these are free and open-source too! Don't be afraid to google for help, ever;

The most important trick of them all: we humans are horribly flawed, our perception especially. There are many ways to exploit what we see, making it easy to cut down size: if you think something looks 'fine', it is likely 99% of everyone else will think it looks 'fine' as well. Experiment. (On that note: quality snobs are just that, quality snobs.)

REMINDER TO PROPERLY COMPRESS YOUR IMAGE FILES

It saves you disk space and makes it browsing much easier, both on mobile platforms and on slower connections.

tl;dr:

compressed .jpgs for files with colours;

downsized .gifs for simple/flat images and icons;

png-8 for images with sharp lines (comics, MMD/MMM images);

png-24 for images where LUDICROUSLY HIGH QUALITY is a must (high resolution images, like professional logos and pure textures).

Depending on your image editing software, .gifs might be encoded smaller than .pngs. Use your discretion.

Interlacing: load image in several passes, thus creating a low-res preview of the image. Slightly (around 10%) increases imagefile size for .png, but beneficial on slower connections. Use on large resolution images, even when properly compressed. NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR COMPRESSION.

IF YOU POST A 2k UNCOMPRESSED AND NOT INTERLACED IMAGE AT 2Mb I'LL HAUNT YOU FROM THE GRAVE

Well, today is the last day of the vote. How will you (we?) be deciding what to do though? A simple vote like this doesn't say anything about which site would actually be better to use. Would you be wanting some discussion about it too? Listing the pros/cons of each site or why people want one over the other, and coming to a conclusion from that seems more appropriate.

As things stand right now, I think the cytube has a better environment for MM, especially with the emotes which have been set. Plug.dj has a lot of good memories for me, and I love the avatars, but I don't think it fits as well as cytube does now. If it had revived sooner, I may have considered it more strongly.

Having said that, I voted for no preference.

I like the Cytube because of the customization; the background and avatars are a nice addition to it.

I have a lot of good memories with the Plug as well, but I also think it handles the queue better than Cytube does. It automatically rotates people through the queue so there doesn't need to be a person dedicated to maintaining a playlist.

I really like having stored playlists in the plug.dj. It makes it easier when choosing a song, to know what songs were already played recently, and to add a song that somebody else is playing to your playlist. The rotating DJ system is really nice too.

Cytube allows for a lot of customization, from emotes to CSS to scripts, and has a visible queue of songs that are going to be played next.

I like both for different reasons. I think the plug is more ideal when it comes to MMs, but I don't really prefer one over the other, so I voted "no preference".

Here are my reasons why I don't like the plug:

1. An account is needed to do ANYTHING. This is an unnecessary barrier for people just wanting to hop in and contribute a few songs and/or chat.

2. Every channel looks almost exactly the same. No fun emotes that many community members have submitted ideas for. No OC background (maybe this can be changed?). No unique layouts or color schemes that I can see. Nothing. None of the things that make the cytube look unique and like it belongs to a vocaloid community. I don't know all the options available to channel creators but every one I have looked at is nearly identical which is just boring.

3. Other customization options are extremely lacking. You can't resize the video/chat/playlist however you want like in cytube. You can't have chat notifications for any message if you are in another tab. You can't set the video quality to be exactly what you want.

4. Pointless scoring system for songs that adds nothing. Pointless leveling system that adds nothing and only arbitrarily locks shit away from you until you get enough points.

5. The avatars look terrible. Opinion I know

6. You have to create playlists to contribute music. Alright for adding a lot of music but a pain in the ass for just wanting to put in a few songs. This point is more mixed and about the only thing I could see as a benefit to switching.

7. Lame social media features, cash shop, and subscription options.

8. It may not even be up for long.

Feel free to correct me on any of this if something is inaccurate.

TL;DR I don't like the plug.

A few ramifications from the person who coded part of the cytube and helps manage both the cytube and plug.dj:

First, although the customization options are vast and impressive for cytube, it comes with the consequence that any mistakes the developer makes stick (GIGO!). For example: I design and develop desktop first - this makes it harder to browse on mobile devices. This would not be an issue if the default cytube layout was mobile friendly, but it is not. (I know at least two users who have been pushed away because of this.)

The plug.dj design, although lacking in its customization freedom, is consistent and functional.

The features I have coded are (ostensibly) not used, or are a vanity feature for the benefit of a few individuals. Many of these features are not needed for the plug.dj, as its design sidesteps the issues altogether. (Cluttered UI, confusing symbolic language, etc)

Although it is definitely true that plug.dj is less stable than cytube – so much so that it was and is a joke – the response time of the server, both in chat and playlist, seems to be faster for plug.dj. (I have no idea which service takes up more resources, but I wager it's the plug.dj.)

I hope the above provides some insight.

Sure.

The user options seem a lot better in the plug. The custom playlists are great. Not being able to add direct links is a minus, but the built-in search is helpful for quickly making playlists.

The history is very useful if you hear a song you like but forgot to check what it was before it ended.

While the avatars are pretty bad, the UI in general looks much more polished, compared to the shoddy look of the cytube.

Customization is a double-edged sword, because it's not guaranteed that everyone will find the results aesthetically pleasing.

Some of these are opinions of course, but there you have it.

I'm fine with continuing discussion here. I'm not deleting my posts though, briefly bringing the thread mood down a little isn't cause for deletion to me, and it's not meant to be something too negative anyway. The posts were specifically for the person doing the translations and about their threads so I see no problem with them. But It is also a larger issue of the board owner and volunteers here editing posts when it only serves their own purposes (fixing typos, formatting errors, etc). It doesn't happen that often but it should never happen at all in my opinion, outside of OPs that need it or some other special circumstance. Otherwise it is just abusing the power you have in my opinion since it is only for your own benefit. Volunteers are here to serve the board. Editing your posts to fix errors only serves to make your own posts look better, it only serves yourself. This may seem like a minor issue but it makes me distrust the BO/volunteers when they think it is acceptable to use their powers so casually like that for personal gain. I think you should only act as anything above a regular user if there is a very good reason, rule violations for example, or something similar that requires it.

This is my own opinion, but while I think post editing should only be done when necessary, post editing to fix typos or other errors shouldn't be an issue, and anyone can request to get their posts edited for this purpose if they want to.

As long as a mod does not edit a post in a way that is unfair to other users (such as misrepresenting another user's post) then it is not power abuse, but it may be an unnecessary application of moderation privileges.

If there was an option that allows users to edit their own posts, I'd have it enabled for this board.

I see nothing wrong with editing post for honest reasons and I'm not a volunteer. Our volunteers are human. They make mistakes but they try their best to fair with everybody and I respect that.

I don't think they abuse their powers. They are not swinging the ban hammer willy nilly, they are not constantly changing rules to suite themselves. They don't use their mod powers to troll people. As you say they are serving us and with serves comes some benefits and I think post editing(as long as it being done for honest reasons) is a very small benefit and I see nothing wrong with it.

I consider unnecessary use of mod privileges to be abuse of mod privileges personally. Perhaps I have a stricter view on what is acceptable, but it's your board so whatever. I think it makes posts look far worse having the edited message on it than seeing typos or other mistakes, and a user also has no way to know what was edited about the post unless they saw it originally. I'd rather see even less post editing but if you want to continue allowing it as it has been used then so be it

>>89560

Things are very fair around here, I agree. This one of the few issues I've had with moderation here which is pretty amazing. I hate to even bring it up but I do have strong feelings on the subject. I don't think there should be any "benefits" to the position though. They are volunteers after all, and I don't think they should do anything outside of what regular users can do unless it's very necessary.

If you have an example of off-topic posting that you think should *have been deleted please post it here.

Okay, but I don't plan on deleting posts from old threads. I'm looking for an example of off-topic posting that should have been deleted to discuss whether it should have or not based on the current rules.

This is good, thanks. If you are going to enforce some rule/guideline then please have it written somewhere officially before you act on it. Otherwise the action just seems arbitrary. And I'd rather not point out posts or anything, "off topic" is really vague for this board, which is the point I was trying to make.

You're welcome.

It really depends on the circumstance. For example, a casual discussion of meta topics in the Upstairs and Miku Monday threads is generally okay because they don't follow a strict topic. On the other hand, song threads, translation threads, etc. do follow a specific topic or purpose, and meta posts may derail it or clutter it with many unrelated posts, making it harder for other users to read and follow the thread.

In any case, for any comment or criticism towards moderation, the board, or the owner/volunteers it's best to post it here, or to send me or another volunteer an email if you prefer that.

I felt that way too in the beginning. I think coming down from 4chan exposure (down? shouldn't it be up?) to this place has that effect where things look jarring at first but you learn to trust them over time. or not. never trust nobody. not even yourself. memepic.jpg

>and anyone can request to get their posts edited for this purpose if they want to.

Holy Shit, this is like Christmas! It's what I always wanted. Now I can finally boss people around. I'll be like:

"Could you be a dear and tidy up my post, old chap? I seem to have let my dumb spill all over and it made some ghastly typos. hardy-har-har"

Then when they don't even get them all cause there are just that many typos I make, I'll be like:

"You missed a spot."

I'm such a typo factory, I'll have the mod team running around all day, give em such a burn they can cook those hot pockets just by sitting on them. xoxoxo. L O L small x upper case letter D

>>89584

>And am I the only one bothered by this?

No, like I said, it bothered me in the past for reasons among them being that it reveals exactly who the volunteers are which potentially limits their effectiveness and can also bother other posters (I told you so, I told you so). But I do not think it was misused for the purposes of the translation thread.

I also think the problem isn't in people editing their posts but rather not everyone being able to. I think this is something that should be brought to 8chan's attention. The only reason 8chan doesn't have that feature is because 4chan doesn't have it, but 8ch has taken steps in so many ways to be its own thing so I don't see why there shouldn't be an option to enable post editing for every user in the board options.

4chan has this approach: regular posters can't edit posts so mods can't (rather don't) either. Here, mods are free to edit their posts then all other users should be able to as well.

Not really. Only for pretty bad typos, like a case where your post could be interpreted the wrong way. Also to update info on a thread's OP.

None of them are new though. Only the meta guideline wasn't written in the rules.html, but meta was always supposed to be in this thread, which is why this thread is a sticky.

I would like to add, I remember seeing the Miku in a pizza box picture in the Scott thread, which further made the thread Vocaloid related.

The Domino campaign spawned some OC which also could have been posted there rightly.

People having fun with/making fun of this publicity stunt should be allowed to do so.(within certain limits, of course)

It was said it was deleted based on rule 1.

>All threads must be related to Vocaloid and its community.

It could be said, the thread in question was a re-enactment of an actual Miku Promotion/campaign, which some people were having fun with, which would render its deletion unwarranted.

The problem was that the extent of what rule 1 allows cannot be fully determined, so threads have to be judged in case by case basis.

I this particular case, the thread was reported multiple times as a "shitposting thread" and a rule 1 violation. Some people considered the thread /miku/ related (indirectly, by posting in it), while others didn't.

You can say it was poor quality, but did it actually break the rules? We already had a discussion about "quality of posts and their deletions".

I did not think it broke the rules, which is why I dismissed the reports and let the thread be. However, another volunteer deleted the thread.

Rule 1 allows threads related to Vocaloid and its community. By extension, threads about Vocaloid culture are also allowed.

Because of the lack of discussion and content, it got bumplocked, but it wasn't locked or deleted to give a chance to the OP or other anons to contribute to it.

>Also, can you make the board logs visible so if something like this >>95832 happens again people know who did it?

I've enabled the logs, but with the usernames disabled. It's best not to point fingers and blame a mod for a mistake anyone could have made.

The vols should be accountable for their actions. If one were to be doing something people thought were unreasonable they should be able to know who it was. The extra transparency of the username is important since there are multiple people on the board staff.

For one, I trust the moderation fully. Secondly, I have good reason to believe volunteers and posters largely agree on what the rules should be and how they should be enforced. This very discussion is proof of that.

As I mentioned, it sets a bad precedent. It communicates various things, one of which is that moderation is not trustworthy and should be monitored. This is the notion I object to.

There is no need to put pressure on the volunteers, so I believe, by putting them under a magnifying glass. If it eventually does go wrong, we can discuss it when it happened - like we have done until now. To try and catch them 'on the millimeter' is unnecessary. Trust that they mean well and that mistakes can be amended.

Furthermore, in my opinion it doesn't matter who exactly faults. If there is a pattern, the board owner can handle it. As far as I'm concerned the moderation of /miku/ is a collective and slip ups should be discussed openly without addressing the person.

Also, to expand on what was written above: keep in mind that volunteers and even board owners are users like you and me. They are subject to the same vulnerabilities as you and me - but they are also subject to more. Not only are the full blaze of the spotlight were it to go wrong, it is easier for people to retrieve their information and harass them.

Why risk this when the necessity is contentious to begin with?

I trust the BO/vols most of the time, but they have done things before I don't agree with. Having the logs visible is a nice record, something you can easily cite if you feel something unfair was done. They do a fine job, but are not perfect.

>It communicates various things, one of which is that moderation is not trustworthy and should be monitored.

Moderation should be monitored because of the power they have. I'm not suggesting people nitpick every single action they take, but trusting them 100% without question is just foolish, no matter how well they do their job. I have very little reason to not trust them, but keeping some skepticism is important I think.

>>95887

They can already see the logs, so asking them is pointless. This is for the benefit of regular users. And I am aware you guys are normal users like everyone else, but the point stands that they already have access to that information so it seems unfair to hide it based on if they want it visible or not.

I agree that users have the right to know when something was deleted or altered because of a mod, but I disagree with showing the name of the mod responsible for an action, unless such action is bad enough to have the mod's privileges revoked. Otherwise, the actions will be judged by themselves, and not on the volunteer that committed them.

If the mistake was on my part, I will always admit it and apologize properly.

If it was on the volunteers' part, then I'll discuss the matter to them and make sure it does not happen again.

We respect the anonymity and privacy of all (normal) users and we don't reveal information about them without their explicit permission. The same goes for the volunteers, and I cannot reveal info that can be associated with their names.

>They can already see the logs, so asking them is pointless. This is for the benefit of regular users. I don't see why people with power should be monitored when it is such as small, insulated community. It has yet to be proven that /miku/'s volunteers need to be monitored. To reiterate: as far as I'm concerned, if something questionable happens we will address it as a community then and there.

This is not a state, where there are several dozens - hundreds in some cases - of various institutions in a maze of bureaucracy. This is a small board where the powers that be are already open towards and intimate with the community. The suggestion seems like an unnecessary complication. If you are concerned with the behavior or actions of a volunteer, ask them to explain themselves, rather than insinuate a threat of moderation. Communication is the key.

And again: the problem I brought up is the the precedent that is being set. What is communicated to the volunteers: "we don't trust you, we need to keep an eye on you". Even if unintended, volunteers can not be blamed for feeling like this is encapsulated within the message. This is ground for bad blood, which, considering I find the suggestion on its ideological basis contentious, I don't feel is necessary.

As for features/information hidden from users: volunteers can also remove posts, ban people and mass ban groups. Do you feel users should have that liberty as well?

My point is: the line is drawn somewhere. The discussion is about making the logs available, not about people already in a privileged position having said privileges. Let's focus on where the goal is set at the moment, before introducing/shifting to abstract ideals of opacity.

Not sure what you meant by that, but it doesn't sound right. People should be able to post freely within the limits of the rules of the board. When I use "you can and do moderate what comes out of your mouth", I mean that you use language appropriate to the situation. You don't walk up to a black person and yell "Nigger, go back to the cotton fields!" This is extremely rude and likely to get your ass kicked. The same applies here in a more nuanced form.

Rather than focusing on the explicit meaning of opening the moderation log, I attract attention to implicit connotations and what the 'exchange' insinuates. Opening the moderation log does not merely open the moderation log, it also carries the connotation of what I have written before. That a volunteer might feel pressured, alienated or even ostracized. Sure, it might not be interpreted that way – or it might not consciously – but I find the risk too big for something that I feel is wholly unnecessary.

This is an additional consideration out of politeness and with concern for the long term effects. This is not an attempt to censor or - conversely - alienate the posters. On the contrary: I feel that, precisely because this is /miku/, we can consider the long term effects (and deem them too rough). We can trust the volunteers to not abuse their power and trust them to be open for discussion. Any notion against this, no matter how innocuous I fear, would be toxic and poison the well. (Although the exact extend is unknown.)

And, generally speaking, in my experience trying to not upset people is a good thing. This does not mean that etiquette needs to be enforced, but decorum is still expected and preferable. A bit of politeness - rather than unwarranted ruthlessness - and openness - rather than caustic cynicism - seems more beneficial to me, than encouraging people post with whatever tone they want. Mind: tone, they can still post what they want, but the tone with which they do it need not be preferable.

To point: we have a relatively polite discussion of the subject - we didn't need volunteers nor others to correct our behavior, we did it all by ourselves in the spirit of good will.

Also there is not a single post where I advocate for the enforcement of etiquette nor tone policing. Instead, I - as I still am doing - promoted for self-moderation and sensibility. Once more: as far as I'm concerned there is no need to be malicious - and when somebody does get upset, it can be discussed openly. This is different from restricting somebodies freedom of speech. You are free to post whatever you want - within the board and site rules - but others can still object to what you post. (As I have; hopefully without seeming antagonistic.)

Regarding your concerns about the volunteer history:

If I may be so bolt: your behavior seems incongruent. Unless I am confusing you with another post, you have been consistently rallying for more monitoring for the moderation and - in your own words - "giving more power to the people". There seems to be a genuine concern here.

As for the supposed 'incident' prior, I have to object here as well. (Assuming you are referring to the case of a moderator changing the OP of a translation thread they solely contribute to.) I didn't pipe up when it happened, as I felt the board owner addressed it better than I could, but I find the last "squabble" highly objectionable. A moderator edited a post to a thread for and about their translations. This is in no way abuse of power. This is in no way going overboard. All they did was alter the top post to be more inline with the information within the thread - for the benefit of the user, not for the benefit of themselves. There is, patently, no abuse of power at play. Likewise, to claim this is proof of misconduct seems like a non sequitur.

If I may be so rude as to steer the discussion for a moment… Your motivations and reasoning for wanting more opacity and restricting volunteer freedom are still vague to me (restricting them from editing their posts is a form of restricting their freedom to conduct). If you could expand on it, with that I mean give the ideals laying within your proposal and explain how they directly and indirectly connect to this proposal, I would appreciate that. Otherwise - if it true that you don't care all that much and trust the moderation - I propose we drop the issue, keep the moderation log hidden and move on. I feel the majority of this discussion has been me expounding my position over and over and don't feel like I can expand much more without becoming needlessly prolix (this post might very well be already!)

> Unless I am confusing you with another post

You are. I don't know what incident(s) that anon is referring to.

I've already made my points on why I think the log should be public, and if the names have to be hidden I'm fine with that. I think you and I have opinions far too different on this subject to get much benefit from discussion, and I don't have much more to add on it anyway.

I have brought up points against moderation before though, and I'll try to explain why , again, if it wasn't clear before. This is an imageboard, everyone is supposed to be (roughly) equal. Ideally we should never see moderators (acting as moderators) are around unless there is a rule violation or something big happens related to the board. So when I see a BO/vol making their position known by editing things or doing whatever else when it isn't related to rule enforcement, I don't like it. It's nothing more than showing off to me, hence I call it abusing power, perhaps too strong a term but whatever. There are special cases, but editing posts for typos or other basic things is not one of those to me. I rarely see that type of thing done so much on other boards and I don't understand why it is okay here, but not everyone will be so bothered by these things.

What, the volunteer editing their post or asking someone to tone it down?

Volunteers are here to maintain the rules and also nuances not caught within those rules. Rules, by the mere deficit of being formulated in lingua, will always suffer from discrepancies – and the more precise you make rules, the less accurate they will be.

This is exactly why we have jurisdiction in the state. Jurers don't just judge according to the law, they define what the laws mean in practice. As we have no jurers here, it is up to the board owner and their volunteers to decide what rules mean in practice. There would be an issue if there is a difference between what the community and the moderation believe is right, but I highly doubt that is the case.

As this discussion shows, not everyone is an automatic fit for this community. Some people might need an adjustment period. This is once again why I am for conversation and deliberation over sweeping changes and overhauls. In some cases conversation is necessary for integration.

Also, I recommend you read the end of that thread because it neatly recounts what I've been referencing.

Some of you may remember that we were planning to make a /miku/ archive. We're at 19 pages already, so we're most likely going to start archiving next week.

This is the plan:

1. Download threads with ChanThreadWatch.

2. Compress them into .zip (or .7z) files.

3. Upload them to storage services like Mega or Dropbox.

4. Have links to the files in a place where /miku/ users can access them.

If you have any suggestions please post them. I'm also looking for volunteers who would like to help with the archive in some way.

We have a problem. Thanks to the new file deduplication, CTW no longer downloads the pictures or thumbnails from a thread. You only get a single HTML file with everything linking back to 8chan. So if you aren't online or if the file url ever changes you can't access the images in any way.

Yeah. It still works for pictures uploaded before the file deduplication, but not ones uploaded after.

I'll try to find a solution for that.

Dollchan script also lets you download a thread with its images. It might still work, but I haven't tested it yet.

An instance of Infinity Next called Nextchan has been set up by various anons after 16chan (Josh's instance of Infinity Next) was shut down. Josh is not involved in administrating this website, and the site's global rules are minimal. The imageboard software used on the website is open source, and due to its license, the AGPLv3, a public instance must release its source code. Deduplication works in Infinity Next without changing filenames, so the filenames are normal. The file size limit is currently 32MB and new file types such as OGG, MP3, WAV, and EPUB can be uploaded. There is also an overboard catalog with an autorefresh feature called overwatch. The software is in active development and there will inevitably be some bugs, report them in /next/. Come check it out at https://nextchan.org/

The official Nextchan IRC channel can be found on Rizon: #nextchan at irc.rizon.net

There is also an official GNU Social Nextchan account: https://freezepeach.xyz/nextchan

The gitgud source code repository can be found here: https://gitgud.io/nextchan/infinity-next and the github mirror of it is here: https://github.com/nextchan/infinity-next

 No.170317

>>169270

>Yes.

I had a proposition I wanted to make. it's a continuation of this idea: >>84112 ; >>84528

I propose the creation of a "Small Thread Archive"- this would come in the form of a thread on the board containing small and unused threads that will be made into pictures. The conditions, I propose, for adding a thread to this archive are:

1. The thread must have less than 15 replies (easily visible from the catalog).

2. The thread must have received no new replies in the last 6 months

Additional guidelines to how the Archive should be organized include: A thread made into pictures should be able to fit one post. If there were links in the thread, they will be provided in the post for the thread along the picture(s). If there were YouTube videos embedded, they will be provided as links. Spoilers should be revealed in the picture(s).

If anyone wishes to use a thread after it is deleted and added to the archive, they are free to make it again, or recreate it. The picture of the thread can even be used as the OP, or a post link to the post in the Archive can be included in the OP.

To avoid any mistake, some reasonable time could be provided after a thread is added to the archive and actually deleted. Maybe 1 month. In which time, if the thread gets a new reply its picture form from the Archive should be deleted.

Sometimes exceptions to the 6 months rule can be made if a thread has seemingly exhausted its potential. For example this thread >>158278 is likely to not see any use unless someone comes and decides to use it as a general Photoshop requests thread.

This would give more incentive for old threads to see more use, if they have potential and the posters don't want to see them deleted. It would also remind OPs to not abandon their threads and provide additional content.

Since all this obviously requires someone's time, I volunteer to organize, make and maintain the archive thread.

I await thoughts and opinions first.

Three films - plus a mystery feature - have been planned. You can find more information about the films on the invite and a complete schedule with converted times on the timetable.

As a friend of /late/ we are handing you a special invite. If you wish to spread the word and invite others, please use the general invite instead. An informational with additional information has been attached for use outside of 8chan.

The time table is subject to change: other communities are free to join the movie night and take a spot in in the Dusk Hawk Block. If you wish to sign up yourself, please provide us with the necessary information:

- The name (if any) of your segment;

- The estimated stream duration;

it says the domain is registered and functional. So it was likely just maintenance or something, where the host made it inaccessible to users until it was done.

This CSS works pretty well for christmas, you can maybe modify it a bit and use it or parts of it? Check it out and see what you think of it?

Here's a /miku/ highlights collage I made for 2018

It has a lot of the pics related to pinnacle moments of the year for me

If anyone be asking where has the time gone, well just show them this collage, now you know

Maybe it would also be fun if others also made pic collages like this

That's pretty cool 🕦, thanks! I don't keep track of things that well so it would be hard to make one of my own.

I found that most threads past page 8 are going 404 again. I fixed a few up to page 10 excluding these:

https://sys.8ch.net/mod.php?/miku/res/168364.html

https://sys.8ch.net/mod.php?/miku/res/157450.html

https://sys.8ch.net/mod.php?/miku/res/161373.html

https://sys.8ch.net/mod.php?/miku/res/153028.html

https://sys.8ch.net/mod.php?/miku/res/155187.html

https://sys.8ch.net/mod.php?/miku/res/148125.html

https://sys.8ch.net/mod.php?/miku/res/149140.html

https://sys.8ch.net/mod.php?/miku/res/150196.html

But I think there is little point in doing so. Last time they were like this, because the site got hacked and restored. I like to call this event: The Hackening. This time, unless there was some other event I'm not aware of, they got like this on their own. So if old threads just go 404 after a while, even after everything was fixed last time, there is no point in fixing them over and over again. There is little interest in those threads and if anyone wants to use a specific thread they can fix it on their own or ask for mod assistance if it's a locked thread. At least this is what I think.

Hello /miku/! I don't lurk very often but I was wondering if you could help me out, I'm making a CD themed around Miku obsession, I wanted to know if anyone had any ideas for what I should add. Basically I'm looking for songs that a. Say Miku a lot in the lyrics or b. Reference Miku herself in some way, preferably promoting fanaticism.

Here's what I have so far:

 https://sp.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm18187886

 https://youtu.be/OuLZlZ18APQ

 https://youtu.be/AwHvSGeGf3g

 https://youtu.be/ie3x2dxZ-4k

 https://youtu.be/kvnIFo3xMfY

 https://youtu.be/HqcVN56kZAs

 https://youtu.be/NocXEwsJGOQ

It's not exactly enough for a CD, any help/ideas would be appreciated!

Hello, /miku/. I just wanted to let you know about https://kind.moe/kind/index.html . I'd appreciate it if you'd take the time to drop in and say hello. It's not really devoted to the discussion of topics pertaining to this board, but I think kindness is or should be a virtue valued by all, irrespective of our differences!
