Another comic, and this one's really long.

I'm happy to finally get to translating this, as I've been wanting to translate it since I got hold of it like 8 months ago.

back and inside covers

This comic sometimes uses the song lyrics, so for when the song is directly "quoted" I'll use the official translations from F2nd (can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-WqpUKJ5pI).

This comic also uses furigana (kana printed next to or above a kanji or other characters to indicate their pronunciation), which is used in japanese written works for several reasons, the most common ones being to make the work easier to read for people who knows less kanji (as in young people), to give words double meanings (use a kanji meaning something, set the furigana so it reads as something else), or the most common to give readings for names. For this comic I'll always use the furigana if it conflicts with the kanji written, but I'll mention it in the TL notes or w/e you wanna call it.

If you didn't already know, the song itself draws inspiration from the greek/german myth about water nymph Undine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undine_%28alchemy%29), explaining some of the names (Ondine/Siren), the "be happy or die" theme, and the story taking place "by the waterside" (in the comic shown as the Waterside Park City State).

"Her Majesty!!" The actual japanese used is "我らが女王陛下" (ware ra ga jyoouheika), roughly "It is our Majesty the Queen", however the furigana reads "Ha- Majesti-!!", so I'll just use the english translation the comic already gave me.

In this comic, "We" is sometimes spelled "[私]たち" ([watashi] ta chi) and sometimes "[私]達" ([watashi] tachi), meaning the same. My guess for this is that 達 contains the kanji for happiness "幸", thus being a visual pun or something.

"free execution" in this comic, execution is usually referred to as "自由処刑" (jiyuushokei), roughly "freedom execution".

The screen says "サイレン女王による[blocked]が執行" (SA I RE N jyoou ni yo ru [] ga shikkou), and the word choice makes it so it can mean a few things (likely on purpose). "執行" as a noun can mean "performance", "execution" or "exercise". The other translation chose to translate this as "Queen Siren enacted", as "執行" in verb form can mean "implement", "put into effect" or "perform", however, as it's written in noun form, I chose to go with performance, as that keeps the meaning somewhat vague (as was probably intended). Of course this also depends on what (if anything) is being blocked from our view (maybe the other translation actually knew).

"Waterside Park City State" the japanese used here is "みずべの公園市国" (mi zu be no kouenshikoku). From the lyrics of the song, "みずべの公園" (actually "水辺の公園", but "みずべ" is just "水辺" written in hiragana) is translated as "park by the water". The "市国" (shikoku) is just a combination of the kanji "市" (shi), meaning city, and "国" (koku) meaning (here) "state/nation/country". The choice of using "City State" for "市国" comes from how "ヴァチカン市国" (BA CHI KA N shikoku) is translated as "Vatican City State". This makes "みずべの公園市国" the name of a city state, and "park by the water City State" doesn't really sound like something you'd call a state, so I chose to go with "Waterside Park City State", as that sounds better. In the other translation, this is translated as "The State of Lakeside Park City", but I prefer my version.

I must've moved the book while scanning or something, resulting in the lines getting bent

"Listening to the Queen's divine voice" okay so, starting with "Listening", it's written "聴き" (ki ki) as opposed to the normal "聞き" (ki ki), I assume to emphasize that it is strictly listening, as "聴き" can only mean to listen, while "聞き" kan also mean asking questions (and smelling, but that's irrelevant), which transitions into the last part of the sentence. "divine voice" is not what is actually written. The japanese is "御声" which is usually read "o koe", which is basically just a more formal way of just saying "声" (koe - voice). However, the furigana says it reads "mi koe", changing the meaning somewhat. As can be read here https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%BE%A1#Etymology_1_2, "御" when read "mi" is mostly used when dealing with religious words, as well as "Also added to other nouns to indicate godlike respect". Thus I chose "divine voice", as I feel this conveys the meaning decently in english.

"ThinPho" so the japanese used is "シンフォ" (SHI N FO), short for "シンクフォン" (SHI N KU FO N), or what I assume is supposed to be the english "ThinkPhone", some made up version of a smartphone or something. The other translation also calls it "ThinkPhone".

I originally had this translated as "SyncPhone", but "ThinkPhone" makes more sense as a "parody" of smartphones

"Lady" is spelled "レディ" (LE DI), she's using the english word to sound more refined or mature or something.

Names. Len gives his name as "黄波 漣" read as "Kinami Ren", with Kinami being made up of "黄" (ki - yellow) and "波" (nami - wave) meaning "Yellow wave" more or less, and Ren using a "name-kanji", meaning it's a chinese kanji only used in japanese for names, meaning "flowing water/ripples/weeping" in chinese. Most names in this manga follows a common theme, which I'll get back to once some more names are introduced.

Eye color, lol black and white, on the cover of volume 2 Len is depicted in color, he has blue eyes (and blonde hair obviously)

"Thirty Nine Icecream" spelled "サーティナイン アイスクリーム" (SAA TI NA I N A I SU KU RII MU). Man, if I cared about typesetting at all I'd probably use fonts or something to differentiate when stuff is spelled in katakana for emphasis. Too bad I don't.

"choco chip & green shallots - チョコチップ&グリーンシャロット" man it's always fun trying to guess what english words is actually written, also that sounds like a fucking terrible taste for icecream.

"block" the japanese used is "丁目" (choume), which is roughly the same as a block.

"richies" Len calls them "金持ち連中" (kanemo chi renchuu), where "連中" is an informal way of referring to a group of people ("those guys/bunch of people" etc.), giving the phrase a meaning like "the rich people" or "a bunch of rich people". I chose "richies" because it sounds fucking stupid.

"Unhappy ones" the japanese is "不幸分子" (fukoubunshi), which means unhappy molecule-ish. In the comic, it's being used when adressing "those who are unhappy" more or less, so I'll be using words that fit in english in place of this. The other translation calls them "malcontents", but I feel putting an emphasis on the unhappy part is important due to the theme of the comic, so I'll use "Unhappy ones" (unless I come up with something better later).

"chanting" the japanese used is "幸福な歌を詠う" (koufuku na uta wo uta u), roughly "sing a song of happiness". However, "詠う" (uta u) is used for sing instead of the more normal "歌う" (uta u). Both can mean "to sing", but "詠う" leans more toward singing in form of reciting poems or similiar, so "chant" is closer to what the meaning is. also the whole theme of more or less brainwashing through song makes chanting fit perfectly

"Joker Kühleborn" his name in japanese is written as "道化師 キューレボルン" (doukeshi KYUU RE BO RU N), "道化師" meaning "Jester/clown". However, the furigana says "道化師" should be read "ジョーカー" (JYOO KAA), or "Joker". For the "キューレボルン" part, the spelling "Kühleborn" is taken from a german opera about the legend of Undine, where Kühleborn is the prince of the water spirits. His name is written as "Kuehleborn" in his character profile, but "ü" is often (but not necessary correctly) written "ue" to bypass the use of a diaresis (¨).

"Fouqué's "Water Nymph"" so Len gives the name of the book as "フーケの「水妖記」" (FUU KE no "suiyouki"). After a bit of research, it seems to be based around this book (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undine_%28novella%29 - the cover picture can be seen in Len's book), probably a japanese translation or analysis of it (this (http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E6%B0%B4%E5%A6%96%E8%A8%98%E2%80%95%E3%82%A6%E3%83%B3%E3%83%87%E3%82%A3%E3%83%BC%E3%83%8D-%E5%B2%A9%E6%B3%A2%E6%96%87%E5%BA%AB-%E8%B5%A4-415-1-%E3%83%95%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B1%E3%83%BC/dp/4003241517) seems to have the correct title).

The problem with translating it is the japanese "水妖記" has no real meaning as far as I can find (it's just the combination of 水 - "water", 妖 - "attractive/bewitching", and 記 - "chronicle"). However, it seems that "妖記" is often used when refering to monsters/mythological beings, so translating "水妖記" as "water nymph" seems appropriate.

"Hatsune Midorikawa" is written "初音翠川" (hatsune midorikawa). "初音" (hatsune) is written like in "初音ミク" (hatsune MI KU), and means "first sound" more or less. "翠川" (midorikawa) is written with the kanji "翠" (midori), which is only used as a name in japanese (however, in chinese it means the colour green, as well as having the same spelling as "緑" (midori), meaning green), and "川" (kawa), meaning river. "初音翠川" then has the meaning "First sound green river". Using "初音" is probably only to retain some connection to the official name. Once more characters are introduced I may compile a list of names and their meaningsif I remember

"old man" Len uses "おじさん" (o ji sa n), which can mean both "uncle" and "old man" (and other stuff, depending on context). It's a pretty normal way for young children to address older men, but can be seen slightly rude depending on the person you're speaking to. I chose to go with "old man", as based on how Len speaks normally, that's probably what he intends for it to mean.

"like" - "好き" (su ki) normally means "like/fondness" etc., but when used in "romantic situations" (confessions etc., you've all seen it in a million animus), it usually means "love". A stronger form often used as well is "愛して" (ai shi te - love), which is less vague. Or you could use "恋して" (koi shi te - "in love"-ish,).

"morph into being" so the japanese used here is "変形" (henkei), meaning basically "metamorphose", implying the terminal itself is transformed. The problem is, Hatsune is clearly shown holding both the gun and the terminal, meaning it actually "spawns" a gun instead of transforming into one. No idea if this is just an error or if I'm misreading.

"Shooting" while it's written the same way as the song lyrics translates it to "firing squad", "銃殺" (juusatsu), it's in fact just the combination of the kanji "銃" (juu - gun) and "殺" (satsu - kill), resulting in "a method of killing someone by gun".

"nee-san" and "onee-san" ("姉さん" and "お姉さん") you probably already know, it means "big sister" (informal and slightly more formal). I chose to keep the japanese pronounciation as it's harder to portray the differences between adressing casually and formally in english. Also because anyone who has ever seen any animu ever knows what it means

"Meiko" is written "芽衣子" (meiko), "芽" (me) meaning "to bud, sprout", "衣" (i) meaning "clothes", "子" (ko) meaning "child". This is just a normal way of writing the name "Meiko" in kanji, with no apparent significant meaning. (see next page for her surname)

"Happeace Ints" so they call them "幸安インター" (kouan I N TAA), which actually doesn't mean anything on its own. However, the "幸" (kou) is taken from "幸福" (koufuku - happiness), the "安" (an) is taken from "安心" (anshin - peace of mind), and "インター" (I N TAA) is taken from "インターン" (I N TAA N - intern). I chose to translate this as "Happeace Ints" to give the same "shortened" feel while still being something you might actually use as a nickname.

"Melonbar" written "スイカバー" (SU I KA BAA), basically means "watermelon bar". It's a form of icecream they have in japan just google スイカバー

"Aomura Kai" written "青村 解" (aomura kai), "青" (ao) meaning "blue", "村" (mura) meaning "village", and "解" (kai) meaning "solution/untie". As Kai and Meiko are siblings, they share the same surname (Aomura).

"Poteto" ther cat's name is written simply "ぽてと" (po te to) in japanese. It may be supposed to be "Potato", or it could be some play on the sound word for "lean"/"chubby"/"flop", "ぽて" (po te), or some reference to Teto, or any of the above or none at all. I just kept the name as is.

"white-collar criminal" the japanese used is "思想犯" (shisouhan), which roughly means "thought/idea" (思想) "criminal/crime" (犯), which is translated mostly as "white-collar crime/criminal".

"day" as in 24-hour period. Seriously, why is the english word for a 24-hour period not used more often? Oh right, 'cus it's "nychthemeron". Seriously who came up with that shit.

"Locke" (ロッケ) probably taken from John Locke (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Locke).

Note that even though I use "he" to refer to this unknown person(s?), the japanese does not specify a gender. However, this way of speaking is very difficult to accurately portray in english without majorly rewriting or using roundabout (and long) methods of writing. I simply use "he" as in english, when talking about a third-person of unknown gender in a typically male dominant "profession" (crime), one assumes it to be a male. I could have used "they" to keep it gender neutral, but it sounds stupid in the context and is not something I would personally find natural in such a situation. Also the names used are taken from males, so it's natural to use "he". Also I'm fucking lazy

"source" I'm kind of confused on this, as the japanese used is "発信元" (hasshinmoto - source/sender) ("発信" broadcast "元" origin), but the furigana says it should be read "hasshingen", which is usually written "発信源" ("発信" broadcast "源" source). My confusion comes from why "元" is used but read as "gen" (when read as "gen" it means "former/basis/foundation/unknown/origin"), as this is very rare. I'm unsure if this has any significance (it may just be fancy hipster speech).

"antisocial propaganda" the japanese used is "反社会的 特報" (hanshakaiteki tokuhou, translated roughly as "antisocial newsflash"). This doesn't seem to be a very common phrase with any defined translation, so I chose to go with "antisocial propaganda" as "newsflash" isn't really fitting.

"offense is the best defense" she actually just says "攻撃は防御" (kougeki wa bougyo), more or less "attack is defense", but it's probably just a shortened form of "攻撃は最大の防御である" (kougeki wa saidan no bougyo de a ru - "the best defense is offense").

For some reason, Ondine emphasises the last syllable in her sentences, shown by them being written in katakana instead of hiragana ("いいの" -> "いいノ", "だよ" -> "だヨ"). There is no real way of translating this, so I'm just putting the last word in cursive for now. I do realise this is not entirely accurate to how it's supposed to be portrayed, but there's really no equivalent in english

"Oji-san" I translated this earlier as "old man". Why not now? This time it's used more politely (probably, obviously can't actually know tone of voice from a mango), and I'm too lazy to find some nice way in english of saying "old man".

"What's his name?" once again, speaking about an unknown third person can be done pretty much gender neutral in japanese, but that's really hard (and makes for some weird sentences) to do in english or maybe I'm just incompetent, so I've decided the kid is a he. It's completely irrelevant anyway (for now, if it ever becomes relevant I'll fix this).
