Long time ago /fur/ used to have weekly threads where everyone drew something based on a theme, with each week having a new theme, and it didn't matter what you drew as long as it was somehow related.
Would you guys be interested of doing something similar? Are there even enough drawfags here to do something like it?

I think there's like 8 people here, possibly (probably) less. The good artists are probably busy with their own art and the less adept ones should probably be practicing-and doing artwork based on someone else's theme doesn't really count but you're welcome to put it out there and see what happens.

If a single nonspecific drawing per week interferes with your "practice", then you're doing something horribly horribly wrong.

I only remember one and it was something akin to "costume".
It's better if the theme isn't anything very specific and can be interpreted in many ways. For example lamps/lights, something in a jar/container, knight, grabbing/holding, reading, cleaning, etc.

I think you all did a great job for the first week. and I think it's been a great success.
And now it is time for the next theme.
since Thanksgiving is going to be soon, for this week I think it's fair that the theme is
FOOD
why? because Thanksgiving = Family gathering, Family gathering = Food and a lot of it.
or you can just make the theme Thanksgiving it's all up to you.
so to sum things up
Theme: FOOD or THANKSGIVING

Sorry for being late every one. you all did a great job.
For this week the theme will be ADDITION.
for this theme you will draw something inside an already existing art piece.
for example drawing a hat on the Mona-Lisa, or adding angels in the background of The-Last-Supper.
basically I would like you to draw something that adds on a already existing piece of art, famous or not.
I think this will be a fun exercise because you will be able to imaginate all sort of things.
Or be able to practice perspective if your going to draw on a picture with a lot of landscape.
Have a nice day.

Resurrection seems more like an Easter theme than a Christmas one. (heh)
Anyway, theme-anon(s), may I suggest, moving forward, keeping the themes simpler, with a narrower focus instead of broad concepts. KNIGHT or FROG or ROBOT; like that. The ADDITION was a neat idea (and one I intended to do) but I kept putting it off 'cause it seemed like lots of work to find an image and figure something to add to it. (inb4: quit whining, faggot)

The color smudge brushes in the Edit Brush Settings dialog should do what you want, no? There are also some other smudge options in the brush presets sidebar thing.
Try putting down a small number of fat, opaque strokes rather than many little translucent ones. The middle section of the lamp would have especially benefited from that.

Perspective is cool. Some things that jumped out at me are that his fingers are too long and skinny for those big hands and forearms. The dagger's tip should be exaggerated in size due to the perspective. His pants look like they're viewed from straight-on instead of from below.

I really like the stretchy fabric over the man's head. The grabbing hand in the centre of the image looks off as the fingers and thumb appear to emerge from nothing rather than curling in from behind the man's arm.
>>7048
Good atmosphere and mix of colours. I like what you're doing with the candle as the single focal point of the image. However, a lot of the grass at the front left is needlessly detailed as the details are almost invisible due to the low contrast away from the light source. The aqueduct also stands out against the background moreso where it's further from the viewer than where it's closer, and that detracts from the foreground candle as focal point.
>>7127
I enjoy the characterisation of the disgruntled girl holding her soaked dress up. The different ways of rendering the lighting are also cool. (The main water ripples, the small secondary ripples, the volumetric glow, the hexagonal lens flares.) What's lighting up the frontmost boy's right hand?
>>7136
Neck is strange, as you mentioned. I didn't actually notice it the first time either. I think your heads need more practice though since the outline of the ear is a bit off and the mouth/cheek/eye edge is as well. Also watch out for tangents. There's one with the man's finger and the aqueduct column, another with one of the snakes and the top arches.
>>7098
>how about goofy loomis faces as a theme?
Sure, why not. This week's theme is BLOOKS, the funny faces you draw in Loomis' book Fun With A Pencil. Due on 24th Jan.

I like that. There are some inconsistencies across body parts. The buttock is seen from the side while the band of the loincloth is seen from slightly behind/above and to the side and the left shoulder appears dead-on (and a little small in the deltoid).

>Any protips how to improve perspective? Getting the monitor to any sensible position/angle was a struggle.
I'm not so good at it either The main problem I run into in similar context is screwing up foreshortening and angles (usually by being hesitant to compress something into a small space on the image), and the main solution that works for me is to draw and draw construction lines until I see where I went wrong and how to correct it. Drawing a rough diorama of the scene from a top-down or isometric viewpoint helps too. For your picture, I assume that getting the monitor position/angle correct was a pain because you didn't want it to hide the frog's face or to take up too much image space. If you drew a perpendicular line emanating from the centre of the screen, I think it would then strike the right side of the frog's face. To correct that without hiding the face you would have to rotate the monitor around a vertical axis. If you drew parallel lines emanating from the four corners of the monitor then you'd have a frame of reference for how big the monitor is compared to the frog's head and then you could adjust it to your liking. That's the kind of construction line drawing I mean.
>>7589

Bouncy and energetic drawing. I like the occasional stark contrasts where the lightest colour is adjacent to the shadow colour without the creamy skin tone separating the two. It gives the impression of a very bright and sunny day which is perfect weather for running while dressed like that. The form of the hamstrings and calves that you have suggested with the light and shadow is attractive without being overly masculine.
>Still can't wrap my head around how to deal with the hands, upper back and the hips, though. Feel free to point out anything you have in mind.
The arms are oddly-proportioned. They are too short and the left arm recedes in perspective too much. Be careful of producing an embossed look when shading—this occurs at her left ass cheek and her right thigh. The muscles just above the small of her back should not bulge out that much, it looks like a second ass.

One of those things that doesn't stick out on the actual drawing in front of you and waits until it's digital on the screen. I started coloring this after posting and the brows had already been adjusted; how's this for the jawline?

I know that feel. It's as if half of the goodness of a traditionally drawn artwork is lost to the scanner.
>how's this for the jawline?
It's a bit better but it's mainly changed in ways orthogonal to quality in my opinion. It is smoother in that coloured pic but the cleaned edges are visually distinct from the edges in the rest of the image and it causes a style clash. I also don't think the black facial details read very well here. The thick lines at the bottom of the nose, the mouth crease, and the bottom lip shadow are too imposing and the dot right next to the mouth looks like a bit of dirt.
>neck anatomy
It's a small thing that's causing it, but mainly the fact that the left edge of the neck is a convex line, and the big trapezoidals. Pic related.

Okay, I feel ya. Danke. I still ink shadows too heavy at times and you've got to be so delicate and precise with feminine features to keep them attractive. When you said "goatee" before, it flew right over may head until I was looking at it again. Wew. The neck: collar too high; line too long; and in my tiny little brain as the artist, I already saw the shading I was going to do with the color to define that neck flesh as inside the shirt. Why couldn't you see what was in my brain? (also, I screwed it up)
I had already finished the piece before you replied, but had fiddled with the neck and made it look a little better (pic related).

Good work. The colour scheme is really harmonious and striking (especially that saturated blue). The movement of the face in response to the finger is not too convincing though. The eye appears to have shifted position, implying the underlying bone has deformed, but the lips have not moved much. The deformation of the cheek is too global rather than localised around the finger. The shoulder regions look wrong—measure the distance between the top of the arm/chest crease and the collarbone and it should become clear.

You have good value control. I should do more value studies like that. Aw, shucks. Thanks. I hope that didn't come off as bragging, I just happen to have large mental library of that model and I still got things wrong or simplified them. Most vehicles I'd need heavy photo reference from the start.
>By the way, how do you draw cars? Do you break them into shapes and work form there or use some other method?
>i'd like to know this too to see how other people approach it
I'm almost afraid to answer this because I don't have a lot of experience drawing cars, myself, and I'm just gonna disappoint yous guys with my lack of secrets.
But, by my reckonin': Vehicles have a lot of depth in three dimensions; a lot of volume, unlike things you're probably used to drawing, like people. So, they're almost always in a heavier perspective and the foreshortening should be greater than you first think. Don't be afraid to use a straight-edge during the construction phase; I've learned this isn't actually cheatin'. I'd just start with basic 3D shapes and break it down into more detail. Or, if it's the subject of the piece, like above, start by establishing a horizon line and vanishing points. In that picture, I knew I wanted a mostly head-on angle, so I put the left vanishing point (that dictates the lines of the front) way off the paper and the right v/p close so the side tapered back in a pleasing way. Then I decided where the major shape of the grille was and marked that rectangle out using the v/p. Continuing from there, I figured where other body points were and drew more lines back to the vanishing points, creating a grid to noodle in the rest of the details.
Was that at all helpful? I think I confused myself.
And tires! Tires and wheels are, like, made up of a bunch of concentric rings that share a center but not a common plane; the tires are toroidal, with a compound curve in cross-section, and they bulge at the bottom from vehicle weight to varying degrees, so drawing them at an angle gets super frustrating.
All them words to tell you I don't know what I'm doin', and I think I just got lucky on this one and it turned out half-decent.
You boys seem to be doing okay with your autos. Just draw more to git gudder, I guess? In the end that always seems to be the ultimate answer.

Cliff submission. I stink at drawing water.
>>8138
That's a real improvement between the two pictures. Coloring on the second one is especially great. That Terry sounds like a pretty cool guy.
>I'm impressed by this one. A good garbage heap is hard work creatively.
Thanks. It was not really that tough. I just drew bunch of random stuff hoping that it would work.
>>8166
It has a pretty nice color choice and good linework, but shadows on the bottom look a little bit off.
>>8073
>Was that at all helpful? I think I confused myself.
It reassured me that I am doing things the right way, but just need more practice. Following all the way through instead just thinking I can wing it towards the end is another thing I have to work on.
In addition to your method, I like to break car into engine bay, cabin, trunk, and axles. When working on perspective, I usually simplify their shapes, work on them separately, and then add more detail and complexity gradually.

Next due date is April Fools' day and so the theme will be
CLOWNING AROUND
Onto talking about the heap pictures. Cliff pictures soon to follow. Sorry for being late.
>>8051
>you wanna help a brotha out and tell me what other tangents you can see that are troubling to the eye?
The big ones I had in mind were that the left edge of the left glass (our left) and the right edge of the right glass are almost coincident with the edges of the girl's chest. The curved lines separating the bottom of the liquid volumes and the glass are also close to the unseen curves of the breasts.
That car is really damn good. Others have already said anything I could say, and more.
>>8052
Good stuff. The treads on the tire look like a pattern drawn on a flat surface. That's because the segments are spaced like this: | | | | | | | | rather than like this: || | | | | | ||. Another thing is that the outermost edges of the tire are not broken up by the texture.
>>8055
Sometimes there are minor perspective mismatches. E.g. some of the triangles painted on the speedbump in pic 1 appear straight while others appear curved. In pic 2, the horizon line is near the girl's bra strap (Assuming the dark things in the background are peoples' heads also above the horizon) but the car on the right is drawn as if we're looking at it from a height of half a metre. There's a similar mismatch with the human and the fox on the left in pic 3.
>>8058
I get a sense of mystery from this pic. "What's in the truck, and why is such a nice truck abandoned in the first place?". The brightness up top dominates the rest of the picture and the foilage competes with the truck for the viewer's attention because of the similar brightness levels. Also watch for mismatches in the height of the top of the truck, it doesn't appear to connect behind the green.
>>8065 was mine. Drawn from imagination, and it shows that I need to expand my visual library of dirt and sand.

Are these blooks?
The legs/feet have some perspective troubles. In the first pic, the right figure's foot that we see from the side appears to have little volume and it's smaller than the other foot. In the second pic the shoes don't appear to have the same shape, there's no point visible on the shoe viewed from the front.
>>8138
Good improvement here. In the first pic the legs are weird and the armpit looks almost symbol-drawn, and you've fixed these things in the second. Your grasp of shading has also improved.
The guy's left leg in the second pic is hidden behind other stuff but it should be visible somewhere given the angle of the left forearm resting on the unseen leg.
>>8166
You did a good job mixing the crosshatches with darker flat colours to communicate shadow as well as texture. Some harder-edged shadows would be suitable on this pic as some parts are casting shadows onto surfaces close by.
>>8167
A sense of scale is successfully being communicated here with the horizon line and relative sizes. However the thicknesses of the lines de-emphasise the texture of the sea, the border of the cliff and surrounding space, and the action of the wizard.
>>8172
From the placement of the dude's right arm and right leg and the orientation of his chest it looks like his body is facing the viewer but I get the impression from his face position that his whole body was intended to face something offscreen, in line with his head.

Thank you for constructive criticism. Perspective, composition, and line weight have been things I've been focusing on recently. Composition seems to be coming along best so far, and perspective is just a matter of me staying consistent not winging stuff while drawing.
I am just not sure what to do about line weight. I know that details and items far away should be rendered in thinner lines, but I am lost outside of that.Especially if it involves a single stroke line that changes thickness along the way. Are there any books of other sources that talk about it in depth?

Fun pic and I think the storytelling aspect of the composition is great. The clowns needed to be set further apart though.
Regarding line weight, I'm still just beginning to understand how to control my stylus pressure enough to kind of make it work. The only thing I've found to help is to think of the line as broken up into multiple strokes. Even if I'm not lifting my brush from the surface, I still think of single stroke as multiple strokes.
I'm practicing with ellipses because they're simple in shape, easy to judge for correctness, but difficult relative to their complexity. I did a few here for illustrative purposes. I wonder if you can see how they are sort of constructed out of multiple strokes of different weight, even if the brush only makes a single one. I assume with practice it everything would be smoother and I wouldn't have to go quite as slowly.

Consider yourself lucky; I feel like I never knew how and possibly never will for one reason or another.
I have zero imagination. I can't envision anything in my head and draw it and I don't think I have ever been able to. I just happen to make one line at a time and something based on trivia I've come to "know" through repetition comes out, looking completely soulless, stiff and shitty. As long as it's taken me to get where I'm at now it's apparent that I'm really not meant for this kind of thing, I guess I'm only continuing on because maybe I can get adept enough through rote memorization to where I can help bring out the potential in people who are.

She's my favorite and she deserved better than what she got, god dammit. They'll never be able to reboot or make a show like hers again either because she wasn't an empowered independent woman who don't need no man character like the body-positive racially ambiguous lesbian grotesqueries of Steven SJWniverse. She was instead a generally flawed, dumb and-let's be honest-slutty stereotypical high school girl that just so happened to be a robot with military applications at the same time.
Hurt by time slot issues, and smothered by the overwhelming popularity of Spongebob and the Fairly Odd Parents, she will forever be our buried treasure-never to resurface in a world that's gone stark raving mad. Such a shame it had to end this way, non?

Even after having drawn for several years there's so much I haven't even scratched the surface of that it unironically makes my want to kys myself
>I always wrote praise for it off as cartoon spergs with clang tendencies verbalizing their autism
guilty on literally all counts
The show has its moments and it's cute and all that shit but it's by no means a "must watch" kind of thing, I have to admit. I'd say it's worth watching sure, but its place as a second-stringer show behind Spongebob and FOP back in its day wasn't entirely undeserved.

Thanks for the comment! The material was supposed to be plastic + metal parts, but the twisted pose and the lack of experience in painting robots left it to the way it is.
The robot had a more human-like face in the original sketch, and the hair was a leftover from there. I thought it would be neat detail to leave the hair as it is. It's probably a little bit too high, so that it looks like it's on top of the head instead of attached to it?
Note to self: pay attention to design. Do a few test sketches before trying the complete work. Also do investigation on pelvis, abdomen, neck and face anatomy.

An early spaceship design for the comic I am making as a practice and for my own amusement.
It's off-topic. but I've been trying to make it resemble a woman laying down and floating in water. Is it too obvious? I've been also thinking of eliminating the halo and making 'wings' bigger and flatter, since this spaceship should be capable of atmospheric flight as well.

>I like the overall anatomy and posing here.

Not too obvious imo.
As for spaceships in general, you'll have to consider a few things as i go into autistic rambling.
First, you should consider what is the intended purpose and class of the ship? Ships intended for exploration will have to have a smaller to medium cargo hold, small quarters, medium space for fuel, and some basic defensive and offensive systems. Capital or ferry ships usually have large cargo/quarters area, extensive fuel reserves and defensive and offensive equipment.
Spaceships are usually more cleanly shaped form to not waste internal space. Your ship looks like a light attack ship or a shuttle. For an example irl, a spaceship is more like a warship. Self sufficient. Your spaceship seems like an "aircraft". It doesn't seem to have that much space for fuel, a large quarters for crew, a cargo hold, and too busy internal systems. It seems designed with a base it could relatively quickly return to refuel/rearm, which is usually the case with light attackers kept by stations or capital ships, and/or shuttles. It would be sufficient for in system travel, but it should experience issues during extended trips (could be a plotpoint, actually)
If you want atmospheric flight, you'll have to consider actual wings and the method of landings and takeoffs. With your ship, either a grippen like or an x27 like wing setup is more fitting, with the large wings in the back and the smaller ones front. As for landing and taking off, you could either leave it and have it land like an airplane, draw some thrusters on the bottom for a vertical takeoff.
You'll also need to consider landing gears and the actual entrance to the ship.
For the landing gear, you could extend them or make the halo turn like pic related before landing (though that would be a constant hazard), or as you said, remove it.
As for the entrances to the ship, you'll have to consider the type. Light attack ships may have a planelike setup, with the cockpit glass raising, while a shuttle and or normal ship may have a commercial airline setup, or a lowerable ramp to move cargo.
If your ship will ever sail out from under the watchful eye of whatever policing force is in your target universe, they'll also need weaponry and defense systems. If you are taking the attack ship route, you might have built in guns near the cockpit or under the wings, though consider other options as all have drawbacks (weapon could explode if hit near the cockpit vs losing a wing could mean also losing a weapon)
The feet are neat in a way that they could pretty easily be used for cooling (given internal systems are present), and for the belly button, instead of just it being on you could turn it into a rotateable camera system, so that it serves a purpose, with the pilot/s being able to take a gander in 360 if need be (like being chased, or just in general due to the forward facing cockpit). Might be a weakpoint that you want to modify with armor or shield in general though. (pr have as a weakness for the story for dramatic purposes)
Anyway, pretty alright in my opinion if it's for a simple comic, but depending on the level you want to achieve with it, it might need a few things added.

No more obvious than the ship from Battle Beyond the Stars.
> I've been also thinking of eliminating the halo and making 'wings' bigger and flatter, since this spaceship should be capable of atmospheric flight as well.
It depends on size and what level the technology is at. A ship with the power output and tech for interstellar travel probably doesn't need wings for lift in atmosphere. I feel that atmosphere-capable craft just need to be aerodynamic to minimize drag and heat build-up. Smaller craft, like fighters or planet hoppers that stay in-system would probably be better served by more traditional wings and control surfaces.

Dammit, it a bit too obvious then.
>>9722
It is supposed to be a semi-luxury 'racing' ship capable of short interstellar travel, converted into a 'dog-fighter ship' with small to medium cargo hold. Pirates would use a bunch of them would swarm the larger shit, disable it, and then crew on another boarding ship would move in to loot.
Idea for the weapons was that they are hidden, and would only be deployed for combat.

It was supposed to be 'It's a bit too obvious then,' but I am a scatter-brained faggot who needs to double check all comments to make sure everything is correct. I was in a rush and forgot to do it. That's also the reason why I ended up uploading sketches that were not cleaned up.
