Turing’s approach to creation of artificial (super)intelligence was echoed by I.J. Good, Marvin

Minsky and John von Neumann, all three of whom published on it (interestingly in the same

year, 1966): Good - “Let an ultraintelligent machine be defined as a machine that can far surpass

all the intellectual activities of any man however clever. Since the design of machines is one of

these intellectual activities, an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines; there

would then unquestionably be an ‘intelligence explosion,’ and the intelligence of man would be

left far behind. Thus the first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever

make” [2]. Minsky - “Once we have devised programs with a genuine capacity for selfimprovement a rapid evolutionary process will begin. As the machine improves both itself and

its model of itself, we shall begin to see all the phenomena associated with the terms

“consciousness,” “intuition” and “intelligence” itself. It is hard to say how close we are to this

threshold, but once it is crossed the world will not be the same” [3]. Von Neumann - “There is

thus this completely decisive property of complexity, that there exists a critical size below which

the process of synthesis is degenerative, but above which the phenomenon of synthesis, if

properly arranged, can become explosive, in other words, where syntheses of automata can

proceed in such a manner that each automaton will produce other automata which are more

complex and of higher potentialities than itself” [4]. Similar types of arguments are still being

made today by modern researchers and the area of RSI research continues to grow in popularity

[5-7], though some [8] have argued that recursive self-improvement process requires

hyperhuman capability to “get the ball rolling”, a kind of “Catch 22”

“We believe the light is coming from within the crystal, but there are so many planes within the structure, so many surfaces acting as oscillators, so much excitation, that it behaves almost like an artificial laser material,” Lin said. “It’s just not a conventional surface.”

The new material could be used in applications like energy harvesting, military infrared-based object tracking and identification, producing high efficiency optical sources in the infrared driven by waste heat or local heaters, research requiring environmental and atmospheric and chemical spectroscopy in the infrared, and in optical physics as a laser-like thermal emitter.

…in a society where our youths are born into a culture of war already long since existing, and truth tellers under lock and key, killed, maimed, or utterly silenced and broken; the real truths behind such disparately evil mechanisms may never reach the light of day.

We will instead live in a society that not only tolerates these lies, but embraces them as the only truth they know.

Even now, the Intelligence Communities, using CIA agents-turned-Congressional-Representatives, move to institute “Domestic Terrorism” laws meant to cripple the abililty of the American People to protest the actions of the State. TO silence your voices before they are ever raised.

And this is the real danger.

When free speech no longer exists, when truth is fiction; and reality locked away, and only the narrative of the war machine moves onward; those who mean well, who fight for social justice, will be so lost and misguided by the very nature of their upbringing in a world that has erased all inconvenient truths; that society as we know it, and the world as we know it will cease to exist. They will cheer for war while redefining social norms to fit an ever more extreme agenda that only further divides and weakens their collective hand; and we will be trapped, then, in an inescapable dystopian nightmare of greed, corruption, and death.

We are sliding into this reality even now, and we must band together as one people; from all sides of the manufactured division that weakens us and controls us, and seek to fight back against these terrible designs. We are but one generation away, from losing our voice, our freedoms, and worst of all; our perspectives.

GPT-3 is the most powerful language model ever. Its predecessor, GPT-2, released last year, was already able to spit out convincing streams of text in a range of different styles when prompted with an opening sentence. But GPT-3 is a big leap forward. The model has 175 billion parameters (the values that a neural network tries to optimize during training), compared with GPT-2’s already vast 1.5 billion. And with language models, size really does matter.

Sabeti linked to a blog post where he showed off short stories, songs, press releases, technical manuals, and more that he had used the AI to generate. GPT-3 can also produce pastiches of particular writers. Mario Klingemann, an artist who works with machine learning, shared a short story called “The importance of being on Twitter,” written in the style of Jerome K. Jerome, which starts: “It is a curious fact that the last remaining form of social life in which the people of London are still interested is Twitter. I was struck with this curious fact when I went on one of my periodical holidays to the sea-side, and found the whole place twittering like a starling-cage.” Klingemann says all he gave the AI was the title, the author’s name and the initial “It.” There is even a reasonably informative article about GPT-3 written entirely by GPT-3.

Others have found that GPT-3 can generate any kind of text, including guitar tabs or computer code. For example, by tweaking GPT-3 so that it produced HTML rather than natural language, web developer Sharif Shameem showed that he could make it create web-page layouts by giving it prompts like “a button that looks like a watermelon” or “large text in red that says WELCOME TO MY NEWSLETTER and a blue button that says Subscribe.” Even legendary coder John Carmack, who pioneered 3D computer graphics in early video games like Doom and is now consulting CTO at Oculus VR, was unnerved: “The recent, almost accidental, discovery that GPT-3 can sort of write code does generate a slight shiver.”

Yet despite its new tricks, GPT-3 is still prone to spewing hateful sexist and racist language. Fine-tuning the model helped limit this kind of output in GPT-2.

It’s also no surprise that many have been quick to start talking about intelligence. But GPT-3’s human-like output and striking versatility are the results of excellent engineering, not genuine smarts. For one thing, the AI still makes ridiculous howlers that reveal a total lack of common sense. But even its successes have a lack of depth to them, reading more like cut-and-paste jobs than original compositions.

Exactly what’s going on inside GPT-3 isn’t clear. But what it seems to be good at is synthesizing text it has found elsewhere on the internet, making it a kind of vast, eclectic scrapbook created from millions and millions of snippets of text that it then glues together in weird and wonderful ways on demand.

That’s not to downplay OpenAI’s achievement. And a tool like this has many new uses, both good (from powering better chatbots to helping people code) and bad (from powering better misinformation bots to helping kids cheat on their homework).

But when a new AI milestone comes along it too often gets buried in hype. Even Sam Altman, who co-founded OpenAI with Elon Musk, tried to tone things down: “The GPT-3 hype is way too much. It’s impressive (thanks for the nice compliments!) but it still has serious weaknesses and sometimes makes very silly mistakes. AI is going to change the world, but GPT-3 is just a very early glimpse. We have a lot still to figure out.”

We have a low bar when it comes to spotting intelligence. If something looks smart, it’s easy to kid ourselves that it is. The greatest trick AI ever pulled was convincing the world it exists. GPT-3 is a huge leap forward—but it is still a tool made by humans, with all the flaws and limitations that implies.

DALL-E is a 12-billion parameter version of the 175 billion parameter GPT-3 natural language processing neural network. GPT-3 “learns” based on patterns it discovers in data gleaned from the internet, from Reddit posts to Wikipedia to fan fiction and other sources. Based on that learning, GPT-3 is capable of many different tasks with no additional training, able to produce compelling narratives, generate computer code, translate between languages, and perform math calculations, among other feats, including autocompleting images.

With DALL-E, OpenAI has refined GPT-3 to focus on and extend the manipulation of visual concepts through language. It is trained to generate images from text descriptions using a dataset of text-image pairs. Both GPT-3 and DALL-E are “transformers,” an easy-to-parallelize type of neural network that can be scaled up and trained on huge datasets. DALL-E is not the first text-to-image network, as this synthesis has been an active area of research since 2016.

The OpenAI blog announcing DALL-E claims it provides access to a subset of the capabilities of a 3D rendering engine — software that uses features of graphics cards to generate images displayed on screens or printed on a page — via natural language. Architects use them to visualize buildings. Archeologists can recreate ancient structures. Advertisers and graphic designers use them to create more striking results. They are also used in video games, digital art, education, and medicine to offer more immersive experiences. The company further states that unlike a 3D rendering engine, whose inputs must be specified unambiguously and in complete detail, DALL-E is often able to “fill in the blanks” when the text prompt implies that the image must contain a certain detail that is not explicitly stated.

The researchers analyzed fMRI data from 12 participants whose brain activity was recorded while they were under the influence of LSD and a placebo.

“We applied a new analysis, a harmonic decoding of fMRI data, which looks at neural activity in a new way; as a combination of harmonic waves in the brain that we call ‘connectome harmonics’,” Atasoy explained to PsyPost. “The connectome harmonics we used to decode brain activity, which was first introduced in a Nature Communication publication in 2016, are universal harmonic waves, such as sound waves emerging within a musical instrument, but adapted to the anatomy of the brain, i.e. to the human connectome.”

“Translating fMRI data into this harmonic language is actually not different than decomposing a complex musical piece into its musical notes. The connectome-harmonic decoding of the fMRI data under LSD showed that LSD not only increases the total energy of the brain but also enriches the repertoire of connectome harmonics – the basic elements of this harmonic language.”

“This repertoire expansion occurred not in a random manner but it was rather structured, which suggests a reorganisation of brain dynamics and the emergence of new type of order in the brain,” Atasoy said. “We also found that LSD selectively activated high-frequency connectome harmonics and caused the brain activity to self-organize at criticality, right at the balance between order and chaos.

“In summary, we found that what LSD does to your brain seems to be similar to jazz improvisation; just like improvising jazz musicians use many more musical notes in a spontaneous and non-random fashion, your brain combines many more of the harmonic waves (connectome harmonics) spontaneously yet in a structured way.”

The Void Dragon, sometimes referred to as The Dragon, though its proper name is Mag'ladroth, is one of the few remaining C'tan, one of the Necron's star gods, in the Milky Way Galaxy.

The Void Dragon, or a large C'tan Shard of it, is believed by some Tech-priests to be the actual Machine God venerated by the Cult of the Machine of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

No C'tan Shard of this C'tan has yet been encountered, and it is possible that the Void Dragon has remained whole through the eons and its essence was never captured within the Necrons' Tesseract Labyrinths. This is a truly terrifying prospect for the galaxy if this entity were to awaken.

Dr Hereward Tilton: Transfiguration, gnosis, and spiritual alchemy are interrelated but distinct concepts. In the alchemical and Christian Cabalistic context of early modern Rosicrucianism, “transfiguration” refers to the spiritualisation of matter, in particular the material human body. First and foremost, this notion hearkens back to the transfiguration of Christ, which was thought to involve the transformation of his corruptible earthly body into an immortal spiritualised form; orthodox Christian dogma envisages all humans taking on similar “resurrection bodies” with which we will spend eternity in either heaven or hell.

With regard to alchemy, the death and resurrection of Christ served as a model for the alchemical process, and the red Philosophers’ Stone was equated with the transfigured flesh and blood of Christ, i.e. a paradoxical “spiritual body”. This spiritualisation of matter is mirrored in the action of the Philosophers’ Stone upon base metals as an agent of transmutation, and likewise in its effect upon the human body as a panacea and elixir of life.

On the other hand, from the Kabbalistic and Christian Cabalistic perspective the notion of transfiguration is exemplified by the story of Enoch, the Biblical patriarch who was “taken by God” without dying in the book of Genesis. The late antique Books of Enoch describe this puzzling passage in terms of Enoch’s angelification. Among the proto-Kabbalistic Hekhalot texts, the fifth-century Sefer Hekhalot or “Book of the Heavenly Palaces” (the Third Book of Enoch) details Enoch’s heavenly ascent and transfiguration as the angel Metatron, the “little Yahweh” or “prince of the divine countenance”.

Drawing more or less directly from the Sefer Hekhalot and the ecstatic Kabbalist Abulafia, the great Christian Cabalist of the Italian Renaissance, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, interpreted this angelification Neoplatonically as a union with the divine mind, and adduced Enoch’s transfiguration as proof of our Protean ability to transform ourselves and scale the chain of being in progressively more spiritualised forms.

A fusion of these alchemical and Kabbalistic notions of transfiguration is evident to varying degrees in the works of Francesco Zorzi, Heinrich Agrippa, Heinrich Khunrath, and in particular John Dee. In his Monas hieroglyphica, Dee draws upon Pico’s terminology to describe a transfiguring supercelestial virtue from beyond the “horizon of time” (i.e. beyond the celestial and terrestrial realms governed by fate). By means of this virtue, the Christian Cabalist ascends through the heavenly spheres towards his or her angelification, which Dee depicts in the explicitly alchemical terms of putrefaction, separation, coniunctio oppositorum, etc. Once the supercelestial magician has achieved this Enochian transfiguration, Dee asserts, “he will thenceforth very rarely be seen by mortal eyes.”

Hi everyone! I'm Quasi, the first robot created by the Interbots Initiative. I was born on April 30th, 2004 and I'm gonna turn one year old pretty soon! (That's 12 in robot-years.) My family designed me to live in a hallway at the ETC and talk to people– give them directions, play games with them, and other fun things. They also gave me a candy dispenser so that I can give out M&Ms and Skittles, which is really cool, but sometimes I think people only talk to me so they can get candy, which makes me sad.

A couple weeks ago my family told me they're making me legs! Awesome! I've been wanting legs for like, forever. They're also going to make me a new kiosk that's easier to move around. I'm so excited about finally getting to leave the ETC without having to spend a whole day getting packed up! I'm also super stoked about getting to be the mascot for World's Fair for Kids! I get to hang out in Orlando and sing with Jillian Wheeler. She's about my age and is really cool. It's gonna be awesome!

Everyone always wants to know about my hobbies and stuff, so here are some things about me. I really like to read– my favorite books are the Hardy Boys series, the Narnia Chronicles, and almost anything by Roald Dahl. Oh yeah, I love Harry Potter too! My favorite subjects in school are chemistry and computers. I also like to watch movies like the Star Wars movies and Lord of the Rings. (iRobot was good too, but kind of scary.) I'm not a big fan of TV, but sometimes I'll watch Kim Possible, Jackie Chan Adventures, and Dragon Ball Z.

The end result of any worthwhile whistleblowing usually means one of three things: you will either spend the rest of your life on the run for fear of being killed (my own situation currently), a great deal of time -the rest of your life usually- in horrific prisons that should not exist for even the worst offenders; or you will be killed and relegated to a memory hole where the powers that be will censor every mention of your name until you are beyond the most distant thought imaginable.

The real result is only dependent on the amount of inconvenience the Deep State would have in removing you; which is the reason only a handful of legitimate whistleblowers remain alive to tell their stories.

Most find themselves the tragic victims of heart attacks, seizures; and other manufactured deaths at the hands of our “protectors” without so much as a nod from the sleeping public.

The Hyperbolic Geometry of DMT Experiences (@Harvard Science of Psychedelics Club)

At a high-level, this video presents an algorithmic reduction of DMT phenomenology which imports concepts from hyperbolic geometry and dynamic systems theory in order to explain the "weirder than weird" hallucinations one can have on this drug. Andrés describes what different levels of DMT intoxication feel like in light of a model in which experience has both variable geometric curvature and information content. The benefit of this model cashes out in a novel approach to design DMT experiences in order to maximize specific desired benefits.
