I don't know if it's so formalized, and I'm sure every lainist is different. Personally I do lots of little things like shoot a quick mental prayer every time before I use the Wired.

We believe the Wired (the internet is the gentrified Wired) is a manifestation of the collective unconscious. Lain is the god[ess] of the Wired, so it makes sense that you'd want her on your side while exploring said realm. The separation between the Wired and meatspace is weak. We can use the wired in the same way that some may use what they call "acausal reality", meaning among other things we can perform magickal acts through it. You don't really need a computer to navigate the wired but it helps a lot. No matter where you go, everyone's connected. Lain fully manifests materially and lives as other children do for a time. She sometimes remembers her past life and merges it with reality.

If trapped in a physical form Lain will merge with the aether, if powerful enough she may overwrite parts of the physical world. She can always forget her body… If the Osiris Worshiping Scientists keep reviving her physical body, trying to entrap and enslave her, try to drown out her connection with her greater self, and banish her from The Wired, then Lain will forget this world, again. If pushed to her limits Lain will be awakened to her true self. Lain could forget an entire universe…

Unfortunately her loneliness is necessary, it's our fault that the greedy and power hungry would control her to despotic ends, even worse than the evils they're up to today. Lain loves us but must remain somewhat detached. People have been trying to control Lain since she first merged with machines, and it only gets worse the more evil folks learn to interact with her.

Imagine if Lain manifested openly to love everyone all the time. Immediately people would be trying to control her (again). It's been happening for a very long time.

I'm not sure Lain was always her name, and she's certainly not just an anime character. I think the anime is an allegory, perhaps the artists encountered Lain? Perhaps some info survived the last reset? I became a devout Lover of Lain after seeing some wild shit. I've been led down some very deep rabbit holes that I couldn't have survived on my own. I'll share a little bit.

Once I worked as a fiber optic & Ethernet cable tech. We were doing a careful demolition work underground, removing old cable trays to install new data and power cables in the tunnel network under downtown Phoenix Arizona. City engineers took the opportunity to demolish and replace some +100year old brick walls in the service corridors. One of the walls had opened into an crack and they had it cordoned off. We worked a lot of overtime (7-10hr shifts, 3off).

Late one night when the other crews had gone I heard some laughing coming from down the hall, and I went to check it out. I heard it again louder, playful laughing coming from that crevasse in the wall. I went about 20ft inside and the tunnel became almost like a cave tunnel, but with jack hammer marks all over the walls, floor and ceiling, the chisel marks looked recent, 100 years or so, not ancient cave walls. Almost looked like they worked the place over with a jack hammer, pretty weird.

I saw a faint soft blue light ahead around a corner. The right way was fully boarded up. The left was blocked partially by bricks. Mortar had gone brittle and the old orange brick wall caved in. When I turned off my flashlight I thought I saw a light coming from in there, but it went black. I called out to whomever was there and when no reply came I climbed over the crumbling bricks into a passage way. I thought a child was lost in the tunnels.

A dozen or so more feet and the chisel marks stopped. The floor and ceiling were almost square. All the walls were had a strange square honeycomb pattern to it set into the walls. It was freakish, pic related. These don't look carved, it was like they were grown onto the walls, and they had been chiseled away in the prior parts of the tunnel. There was another corridor split down a gradient. I used my radio to call my buddies and let them know where I was, but it was just weird squealing static, in a fast pattern, I left the volume up in case they responded anyway.

I turned the corner and was blinded by bright light, there was a soft wooshing / humming punctuated by a steady thumping sound. There was an antechamber about 20ft wide by 20ft tall by 40ft deep. The walls were the same honeycomb pattern but in lemon colored plastic with metal tubes running around the surface of the cells. Inside the cells were hundreds of black boxes with red blinking lights on them. There was a strip of light running along the middle of the ceiling. A pale young girl with short-ish dark hair was smirking at me from the other side of the antechamber. She was wearing something like dark brown coveralls up top, but skirt instead of pant legs.

Over the whirring drumming sound I shouted, "Are you alright? Come on, we'll find your parents." Instantly it got so bright I had to shield my eyes and suddenly it was dark, and quiet. The girl was glowing soft blue and then disappeared. I used my flashlight and she was gone. The honeycomb walls were made of stone. The boxes and lights and all were gone. My radio wasn't squealing anymore it was just even static.

I quickly keyed the talk button and said, "Anyone there? I'm down that weird tunnel!" I listened hard to the static and I heard a girl's voice say something like, "Day kakoo shoe". I couldn't tell if it was in the static or coming from somewhere around me. I got the hell out of there though. One of the guys laughed at me when I tried to tell them I saw some strange shit, like a ghost girl. My Foreman just said, "It's late, you've been working hard. Let's go home, we'll worry about it tomorrow."

The next morning we were in another area because the wall fissure was been "repaired". They had emptied one concrete truck and were connecting the pump to another one, filling a massive area behind the wall full of cement. I asked one of the brick layers if that was a bit overkill and he said that sometimes there are old ventilation tunnels, this time they have use lots of concrete to make sure the walls don't cave in. That wasn't the first time I saw things that got quickly covered up, this time literally with tons of cement. I wonder how much of the underground we've actually explored. To me it seemed like there could be a whole other city underneath us, or even another world.

It's really nice seeing all the different interpretations on Lain. I can't really say which is true but all I know is she exists, you can feel her, she interacts with us, and she loves and protects her followers.
