Great series. Love the art, character, story, etc.

I'm really hating this arc that is concentrating on this guy-transformed-into-a-bitch and he is getting chapters dedicated to his californication sex-drama experiences. I'm getting hopeful because it seems like this haunted house trip is going to reach a conclusion to this character an onto the main plot. I would also 110% recommend it.

Thinking of rewatching GITS.

I remember there was something up with the UHD versions, like scenes redrawn digitally or something. Should I get the UHD blu-ray or the old blu-ray? I'd like the higher resolution/bitrate version but not if it's pozzed.

Finished off the Wolverine anime, and it's an okay series.

The plot is that Logan's girlfriend is kidnapped and, after a year of searching, he finally finds out that she's in Japan and is being married off to owner of Madripoor Island (The center for all crime in Asia) so that her yakuza father can expand his empire. And, the rest of the series unfolds with expanding this simple plot over 12 episodes and dealing with all the different enemies and “allies” that Logan meets along the way that have their own interests in the game being played. In some way, it feels like the series delivers with everything you'd expect from a plot like that, but it's also a little bit underwhelming. For example, the beginning of the starts out with Logan being framed for killing one of his cop friends, but that point mostly solves itself once he gets out of Tokyo. Then there's the “bigger” issue where Madripoor is in a power struggle, with none of the fractions really being worthy of controlling the island, that mostly solves itself as well. In fact summing it up like that, the reason the plot doesn't feel fully delivered is that Logan doesn't actually feel that important to the story going on. All the characters use Logan to further their own interests, but everything still results in the events taking place had he not been involved at all. And, it probably doesn't help that his girlfriend doesn't actually feel at all resistant about the forced marriage until the last episode, with her being submissive the entire way. So, when you boil it down, the isn't even that interesting to talk about, which is quote a bit of a letdown due to how much I praised and enjoyed the Iron Man anime.

As for the animation of the series it is nicely made. The art style is rather attractive to watch, but some of the earlier in the fights in the series look a little silly with how little “activity” they depict. And, part of the silliness has to do with much of the music being guitar and drums filling most of the episodes and depicting a highly active fight.

Overall, I did enjoy the Wolverine anime, but I would not really recommend it. If you want something that is nothing BUT literal action, you may find it more enjoyable than I, but I didn't really Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

Do you like old men, anon?

Recently finished Ristorante Paradiso. It was quite enjoyable, despite being a josei show it didn't have any BL, the show had a more 'mature' tone so there weren't any pure sexual moments which BL/fujoshi shows tend to have (like guys being fags or women living out their rape fantasies). Since the men were 'older' it catered to what I assume was a more mature subcategory of the fujoshi demography. Either way my point is that the show is quite good even if you're not a fujoshi.

The plot of the show is that the MC travels to Rome in search of her mother, who abandoned her, when she finds her they kinda make peace and she starts an apprenticeship at the restaurant her mother's husband owns. The mangaka for this is the same woman who wrote ACCA 13 and the shows structure is quite similar (as is the dialogue), each episode covers one of the camerieri's backstory.

The animation was good for what the show was, I especially enjoyed the soft colors that were being used. Only weird thing was the CG backgrounds that looked like they belonged in a PS2 game. I'd recommend this to anyone who would enjoy a more mature version of the SoL genre as it covers the daily lives of the cast but not in the typical 'daily hijinks' way that SoL normally does.

Finished Koudelka (the manga) recently. Rather than an adaptation of the PS1 game, it instead serves as a follow up, set about a year later. Kind of interesting to see the direction that could have been taken, even if the PS2 sequels render it not canon (though chronology in the series is sort of odd anyhow; I didn't see anything that would have kept it from following the good ending), and it's pretty easy to see that Joshua's character design got repurposed for Halley in the first PS2 Shadow Hearts, though their personalities are pretty different. Still quite dark in content despite the difference in visual style and working with just black and whites, as opposed to the game's array of grungy colors, but it's understandably not the same setting as the game for most of it. Koudelka herself also has an interest deviation from her personality in the game (where she and the other two party members bicker so much one has to wonder if they won't just kill each other before the night's over), being shockingly kind. Then again, the people she's mostly interacting with, children and prostitutes, might simply be reaching a soft spot her "allies" in the game simply don't, since she's been both before at the same time. Becomes quite amusing later when she encounters Roger again, giving her the chance to act more like her game self prior.

I do think it gets a bit too "girl power" by the end in a way the game never did. I mean, I can sympathize during the earlier chapters, where it's mainly that the women at the whorehouse don't want their own daughters to be stuck in their line of work (it's the late 1800s and they're trying to get by), but the last few chapters kind of beat the reader over the head with a message that women can accomplish whatever they want because they're women; not so much from Koudelka herself, but rather Joshua, whose mother raised her as a boy, and very much considers Koudelka a role model. Also noticed that aside from the demons in the graveyard, every other antagonist is male, and very few who aren't outright enemies or children are actually shown as sympathetic.

>Assassin's Pride

An interesting and unique setting was squandered on the anime equivalent of Twilight in which a super handsome, super talented vampire has to take care of a 13 year old girl. The show criminally underuses its setting and teases at an overarching plot, but in the end, exists to showcase how powerful the MC is and how loyal to the girl he is. To her credit, the girl is intelligent, a hard worker, and talented, putting her head and shoulders above most female main characters in shows like this, but as always with Japan, there's a permanently friend zoned childhood friend who is infinitely more talented and attractive involved. Pretty forgettable show overall.

I dismissed this show offhand when it aired after reading a description that made it sound like a serious drama along the lines of trash like True Tears and Tari Tari. What I got was a comedy series that actually gets laughs out of me with its charming cast. As each episode is only around 10 minutes long, the show maintains a brisk pace that ensures gags don't outlive their welcome. This is a must watch if you're in the mood for something to put a smile on your face, and Nanako is a miracle of the universe.
