No, it was just an entire set shitting on Bolas by giving him a dumb plan, making each part of it fall apart on him or turn traitor on him, even Liliana lived through being a traitor, only a couple of planeswalkers died instead of the massacre teased during the candle trailer, and they imprisoned Bolas in his own realm and robbed him of almost everything.

Whoever came up with that plan for Bolas in the writing crew was a retard.

>scry lands

It is pretty disappointing as they are a definite step down from check lands. The scry is nice, but it can't beat getting to the required minimum mana asap. Hopefully, some solid lands get reprinted to replace shocks.

Shock into check is definitely great, you can hit three colors on turn 2 no problem. It will be a shame to see them go. I missed the scry lands the first go around ... did they have much of an impact in standard then?

>I missed the scry lands the first go around ... did they have much of an impact in standard then?

People initially thought they were gimmicky and weak, but quickly realized how powerful card selection stapled to a land was. The combination of mana fixing and card selection without occupying a card slot like Lay of the Land enabled a lot of nonblue decks to compete with blue in terms of filtering away bad draws. Abzan Control was famously the best control deck in THS-KTK Standard, since it got to play all the best cards (Siege Rhino, Abzan Charm, Elspeth, etc.) while still having enough incidental card selection to avoid the conventional problems of a nonblue "midrange" deck. Even in RTR-THS Standard, you had monoU and monoB devotion decks playing off-colour scry lands because they could afford to incorporate them into their curves.

As the format had more cards added, people began realizing that the scry 1 became more valuable as games went longer, so you'd have people intentionally working through mediocre mana in the early turns to have more useful scrying later. There was a really good article where UB control player dissected all the potential lines he was considering on T2/T3 given the cards he wanted to cast (Bile Blight, Dissolve, which are BB and 1UU respectively), and how he was trying to see if he could afford to play his scryland later and dig for something better once he knew more about his opponent's deck. It was a really good read, but it appears to have been memory holed from major search engines, which is frustrating.

Despite all I've said, we don't have access to all 10 so I doubt they'll be as format-defining as they were in 2013-2014.

Sadly, no. It engulfed Magiccards.info and doesn't provide legacy support, so that beautiful, simple HTML interface is gone forever. Your image reminded me how much I fucking hate Scryfall, however, so I did some skimming and this is what I've found.

MTGpics:

>simple HTML interface

>has a bunch of high-resolution card art, which appears to be updated regularly and quickly

>powerful advanced search engine

<interface is too simple for its own good, and elements just sit on the page

<advanced search is all GUI-based and very clicky, as opposed to Scryfall's text parser

<viewing individual card images opens them in black semitransparent pane above the page, but the only way to close the image is to click on the close button in a corner of the screen

<<opening the preview image in a new tab gives you a 40x40 image

<no forums or anything to provide archived information like decks and tournament reports

Another thing I just noticed is that in pic 1, the tooltip requires a click to bring up and never goes away unless you navigate to a different page. Really amateurish HTML code.

MTGVault:

>visually pleasing but simple interface using soft brown and green; very easy on the eyes compared to Scryfall's deep purple + blinding white

>includes deck building functionality complete with opening hands, shuffling simulation, mana information, etc.

>has forums, but the most recent Legacy post is from 2018 and only Standard appears to have anything resembling discussion

>has advanced search panel that is much less clicky than MTGpics

<forums are populated by the average mouth breathing MTG player who wants some feedback on his casual fungus flavourful deck :)

<search feature has no text parsing so you can only search by one type at a time, among other restrictions

<deckbuilding functionality is worse than deckstats.net, and doesn't seem to provide organization like TappedOut (see http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/pauper-edh-primer/ for an idea of how useful this can be)

Overall this seems like the most solid alternative, although I hope I'm wrong and the search engine is better than it appears to be.

They do it frequently. The M15 painlands and KTK fetchlands and BFZ battlelands were all half-complete cycles. Amonkhet had its cycling duals, and SOI block had its handlands. Every single one of these was an unfinished five-card cycle.

We'll definitely see an allied-coloured cycle of lands, but I heavily doubt it'll be the scrylands.

Amuletbros, how about replacing a forest or a bounceland for this? I usually never touch the bouncelands, but if you're gonna add this maybe you have to, since like them, it doesn't work well if you're playing it first, or early. Maybe the London mulligan rule, which'll soon be permanently implemented for Modern, will change how many of these potentially awkward lands you want to play.

I'm not sure about the field. How bad it is at taking advantage of multiple land-drops is a severe drawback. Azusa is much less happy with it than with bouncies. And you often only have critical lands in play that you can't afford to sacrifice. It'd be better with some main-deck recursion of lands from the graveyard.

>Also, why do some cards says "put on the bottom of your library in a random order" versus an order of your choice? What calls for one or the other?

Some cards are templated in such a way that if you "break" their intended function, they allow you to stack your deck. Pic 1 works this way if the controller of the targeted creature has no other creatures in his library. Compare to pic 2, which specifies a random order because the devs don't want you to be able to stack your deck if you fill it with only CMC 4+ cards.

>ashiok

What's really interesting is that the Planeswalker's Guide to Theros (remember those?) specifies he was a man before being brainfucked by nightmares, and refers to him as such. It was only after WotC became terminally pozzed that they rebranded him as a "brave nonbinary figure" and a positive role model or something. Ironic, considering he literally scares people to death, but given they unwittingly printed a literal designated shitting streets card, I'm sure it's lost on them.

>pw deck Chandra has better art than uncounterable Chandra

I really wish their arts were switched, but +1 shock is pretty nice. Too bad it wasn’t bolt instead.

I wish they had reprinted Nekusar instead of Kess in mh1. He’d be a lot more fun to build with and prison Nekusar could be pretty interesting.

Wow! 5 months since we were here. A lot has changed for me during that time. In particular, with winter around the corner, I can't attend FNMs any more, and the release of a new format, Pioneer. Seems pretty cool.

In the last 5 months, I've been dabbling in trying to buy and sell cards for profit. While I don't really look at /r/mtgfinance (on the grounds of it being Reddit; if I absolutely need to, I might skim it), I do follow Rudy / AlphaInvestments on YT. I've tried speculating on a few cards, such as Field of the Dead (8x$10 foil), Alpine Moon (24x$1-$2 each), and a few others; right now, those have more than doubled in value, I just need to unload them to a buyer. I've taken advantage of FB buy/sell/trade groups to avoid EBay fees, and I've even registered as a small business via Canada Post to save on shipping fees... I just need to make the effort.

Mostly, I've been buying up local collections and buylisting the bulk to other stores, while holding onto the non bulk cards for myself (eg Karn, shocks, etc). Because shipping presents a huge amount of overhead, my plan was to either sell them as sets (eg $40 cards, as tracked shipment for $10) or trade them up locally (which is difficult because we're a small town) into higher value cards (eg bulk standard -> shocks -> $30-$40 singles), which I would then sell.

This seems kinda blogposty, but that's how I've been approaching the game right now. Oh, and I've been trying to "invest" in sealed boxes as per Rudy. Right now I have a Throne of Eldraine, Guilds of Ravnica, and Oath of the Gatewatch box, plus 2 Core 2020 fat packs. I plan to get one box per set as they come out, and as money allows, 1-3 boxes per year of older stuff that has proven itself.

I feel that the economy is in a bubble though, and I found the Reserve List prices tanking to be an interesting indicator of what might happen to the rest of the game for like, 5-7 years
