Explosion At ArcelorMittal Plant In Northwest Indiana; No Injuries Reported

CHICAGO (CBS) — An explosion rocked the ArcelorMittal steel plant in Burns Harbor, Indiana Thursday morning, sparking a fire and causing damage to equipment near a blast furnace, officials said.

No one was injured in the blast, which happened at the D blast furnace at the plant, according to the Burns Harbor Fire Department. Video shared with CBS 2 shows a fire raging near the site of the explosion.

Robert Maxwell, Israel’s Master Spy: The Life and Murder of a Media Mogul. By Gordon Thomas and Martin Dillon. New York, NY: Carroll and Graf Publishers, 2002. 448 pages.

Czech immigrant and British media tycoon Robert Maxwell drowned alone at night while yachting off the Canary Islands in November 1991. The autopsy listed heart failure as the cause of death. Maxwell’s monumental financial obligations suggested to others that skull-duggery had been involved. Authors Gordon Thomas and Martin Dillon agree. Maxwell, they argue, was blackmailing his former employers—the Mossad—and they decided to eliminate the source of unwelcome pressures.

To show the plausibility of their position, the authors do their best to establish Maxwell’s links to the Mossad and several other foreign intelligence services. They quote author Victor Ostrovsky—a one-time Mossad officer—who wrote in his book, By Way of Deception, that Maxwell was a Mossad agent. [8] Author Seymour Hersh said even more in his book, The Sampson Option. [9] Rupert Allason (aka espionage author Nigel West), then a Member of Parliament in Britain, implicated Maxwell and a key member of his staff in the nefarious dealings mentioned by the others. Allason did not, as Thomas and Dillon claim, rely on his parliamentary privilege to avoid Maxwell’s lawsuits. When Maxwell sued Allason, outside of Parliament, Allason produced documentary evidence supporting his charges and won.

Maxwell’s American activities are covered, and, according to Thomas and Dillon, they include setting up the publishing house Pergamon-Brassey, Inc., in McLean, Virginia, as a Mossad front. Also in the mix is author David Kimche, a source for this book, who was at one time deputy head of Mossad and a close friend of Maxwell. Broadening the scope, British author and MI-6 turncoat Richard Tomlinson wrote that MI-6 had monitored Maxwell and his links to the KGB. Thomas and Dillon also document Maxwell’s frequent meetings with KGB chairman Vladimir Kryuchkov, as well as his connections with the Bulgarian security service.

Surely Maxwell was in a position to embarrass a number of people. But why assassinate him? There is much in this biography to stimulate the conspiracy theorists, and possible answers to this question feed them all. Thomas and Dillon conclude that Maxwell wanted the Mossad to pay the $600 million in interest due on his debts.

In reaching this judgment, they review his humble beginnings in Czechoslovakia, the anti-Semitism he endured, his move to Britain, and his service in the Army in World War II. The authors describe his ambitious, though embellished, battle for status in Britain, his sad family life, and his unsavory years in the world of international business and finance that led to his death.

The 18 pages of notes on sources are intended to convince the reader of the book’s veracity, despite not providing many specific sources for specific facts. What the authors do not say, not surprisingly, is that one of their sources, Ari Ben-Manashe, is a well-known liar. [10] Similarly, author Gordon Thomas in his earlier book, Gideon’s Spies, linked the Mossad to the death of Princess Diana and claimed to have a source inside the Clinton White House. [11]

That Robert Maxwell was a ruthless, corrupt, tax-dodging international businessman who served as an Israeli agent is highly probable. But Thomas and Dillon have not established the relationship with high confidence, nor the corollary that he was murdered.

Psychopaths I have known: Robert Maxwell, the Donald Trump of Headington Hall

I came across Donald Trump many years ago. Only in those days his name was Robert Maxwell and he lived in London.

Maxwell, born Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin in what was then Czechoslovakia, settled in the UK after WWII where he built a vast publishing business for himself, including ownership of one the UK’s biggest papers, The Daily Mirror.

My brush with Maxwell came in the nineties, soon after he had launched a continent-wide newspaper called The European. The European was a lofty idea: a paper that would be sold in all European capitals, printed in different languages, but carrying more or less the same content to allow the European community to take their news as one. It’s hard enough to get Europeans to agree on what time it is, let alone what newspaper they should buy, so not surprisingly The European was not the runaway success its proprietor had confidently predicted.

Media bookers had been sceptical about The European from the start and Maxwell decided that a trade advertising campaign would help them see the error of their ways. Which is how I came to play a bit part in this tragedy.

I was a junior copywriter, fresh out of ad school working at Y&R in London and Maxwell’s Mirror Group was one of our clients. The task of doing Maxwell’s trade ad had proved so popular in the department that it had somehow dribbled down to myself and my art director, the only creatives in the agency who were too junior to say no. We were asked to do a press ad (remember them?) along the lines of ‘Don’t miss out on booking space in the hugely successful new newspaper, The European’.

We had a day to put the ad together, and set to work with the gusto of youth. At college we’d been taught to interrogate the problem as thoroughly as we could, so we started with a little snooping. We didn’t have Google, but we did have an old technology you may remember called ‘telephones’. Our enquiries soon revealed that The European, far from being the juggernaut success that its owner claimed was, in fact, selling poorly and actually being pulped in several cities across Europe.

This caused a problem, as while the job of an agency is always to show the client in the best light, I really don’t like lying. The main reason being that I’m not very good at it. ‘Tell the truth and you don’t have to remember what you said’ has proved a useful maxim over the years.

Anyway, to get around the personal desire of sticking to the truth, while being pressed to do otherwise by a major client, we devised a headline that came from the recent fall of the Berlin Wall: ‘The European: Spreading through Europe faster than democracy’. I felt this was positive enough to give a good impression, while vague enough not to be challenged on any inconvenient facts. To go along with this headline we sourced a Getty press shot of drunken Germans gleefully dancing on the remains of the Berlin Wall.

Not our finest work, perhaps, but at the time it seemed like a reasonable compromise between the brief, and the truth, which was that thousands of unsold copies were being used to feed pigs, made into milkshakes, or whatever else they did with pulped newspapers in those days.

We summoned the account man back from lunch and proudly showed him our handiwork. He grunted in appreciation then ambled off in a haze of chardonnay towards Maxwell’s lair to show his hard work to the great man. (cont.)

A couple of hours later the account man returned looking very pleased with himself. ‘Good news’, he said, ‘Maxwell loved the ad.’ Our chests puffed up. Of course, he loved the ad. As a successful businessman, it made sense that he was smart enough to know a good ad when he saw one. Obviously, our view of him as a psychopathic media baron had been wrong all along.

‘He just asked for a small tweak to the headline’, continued the suit.

There was a pause. Even this early in my career I had noticed that the words ‘a small tweak’ rarely indicated anything of the sort. The champagne went very flat, very fast as I politely enquired exactly what this ‘small tweak’ might entail.

‘Oh, it’s very minor’, said the account man, ‘Mr. Maxwell loves the visual. Really loves it. He just wants to a slight change to the headline. He wants it to read: ‘The European: Smash sellout throughout Europe’.

‘But that’s bollocks,’ I blustered, ‘they can’t give it away!’

The account man took a drag of his cigarette and eyed me.

‘I know that. You know that. Are you going to tell him? Because I’m not.’

So that was that. I was now living up to the cynics’ definition of advertising as ‘Telling lies for money’. The more worldly among you might be more surprised at my naivety than Maxwell’s bullshit, but if someone were prepared to lie about something so blatantly untrue, what wouldn’t he be prepared to lie about? As it turns out, not very much.

Less than a year later, Robert Maxwell MC, fleer of the holocaust, co-writer of advertising headlines and former war hero, was found naked and dead floating in the sea off the coast of Tenerife, having somehow been separated from the deck of his yacht. The British press, eager to feed on one of their own, reported that despite living a life of unbridled luxury Maxwell’s publishing empire was completely bankrupt and, furthermore, that to prop it up Maxwell had stolen 460 million pounds from his own workers’ pension fund.

Suicide or a heart attack were mooted as possible causes of death with the conspiracy theorists believing that he had been murdered by agents of Mossad, the Israeli secret service. It was thought that Maxwell’s attempts to blackmail the Israeli government to try and get out of his financial hole had backfired rather badly.

Next to this farrago the act of lying to the media industry about his failing newspaper seems rather trivial, but for me I felt vindicated that it was it was a clear sign of moral turpitude.

Maxwell and Trump share several similarities. Both families came from middle Europe and moved to the West where they became wildly rich. Both individuals were narcissistic, bombastic and megalomaniacal. Both ran successfully for political office, Maxwell as an MP, Trump as POTUS. Both liked to appear on television, Trump on The Apprentice, Maxwell would front the TV ads for his paper. Both had chips on their shoulder about their exclusion from the establishment, and though widely criticised for their boorish behaviour both could, at times, appear charming. Both enthusiastically declared their support for the common man while at the same time doing what they could to enrich themselves at his expense. And both lied constantly.

So if Maxwell’s demise is any indicator, America should brace itself. It really doesn’t look like this is going to end well.

Apparently, some members of the media have mistaken me for the closed-case file archivist of the intelligence community. I certainly had unusual security access to intelligence archives during the Carter and Reagan administrations as a representative of the attorney general of the United States. But that does not mean that I am authorized to speak on behalf of any government agency. In fact, for the first 30 years after leaving government service I had to submit all of my manuscripts to the Central Intelligence Agency for pre-publication review. Now I am free to answer any media request I wish. That does not mean I will choose to do so.

For reasons that may become obvious in the weeks to come, I have received a number of recent inquiries concerning the late Robert Maxwell. A Czech Jew who escaped from the Nazis, joined the British Armed Forces, and later became a publishing magnate and a member of the British Parliament, Maxwell died under mysterious circumstances in 1991, when after an outing on his yacht, his body was found floating in the Atlantic Ocean by a Spanish fisherman. He was buried on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

As I wrote in my book, The Secret War Against the Jews, Robert Maxwell was a member of the British Secret Intelligence Service who committed suicide after he had been outed as an agent for the Mossad. He was perhaps the most important secret agent in Israel’s history. Then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir said at Maxwell’s funeral: “He has done more for Israel than can today be said.”

I have only revealed a bit of the Maxwell story so far: In 1947, it was Maxwell who contacted a friend and former cell mate who had become the communist foreign minister of Czechoslovakia, where a major Nazi aircraft plant had been located. After the war, Maxwell and his friends arranged for the old Czech plant to continue making Messerschmitt fighter planes—not for the Nazis, but for the Zionist Jews who were planning to create the new State of Israel.

Maxwell had the wings sawn off the little fighter planes and smuggled the pieces of the Messerschmitt fighters from Czechoslovakia to Palestine inside American cargo planes. There, the Israelis welded the wings back on to create the instant air force that turned the tide of battle in the 1948 War of Independence.

The sudden appearance of Jewish air power took the Arab world by surprise. Both the Russian and British spy services were furious. The Jews were supposed to lose. Stalin had Maxwell’s Czech friend executed, but Maxwell himself was temporarily untouchable in Britain. Perhaps it was because Maxwell knew too much about too many secrets in the United States as well as the United Kingdom.

Maxwell had been recruited to SIS not merely because he was a highly decorated military officer who spoke eight languages fluently. As a senior guard at Spandau prison, Maxwell kept all the secrets the Nazi prisoners told him about the British nobility and Wall Street millionaires who secretly funded Hitler’s rise to power. I read many of these classified files during my government service.

But there is more to the Maxwell story than I was ever allowed to disclose in my books. The classified clock that locks off British files from congressional investigations for 75 years is about to expire. The big British dam is about to crack. A few bits at first, then it will all start to come out in a deluge of secret scandals that may alter our sense of history.

Recently, a British historian obtained partial declassification of a key fact: that Maxwell was recruited by SIS to work for Count Frederick (“Fanny”) Vanden Heuvel, a leader of the pre-war (and pro-fascist) private British corporate intelligence network called Z that paralleled the formal SIS structure and, in many ways, surpassed it. It was a commercial spy service run by and for the private profit of the one percent. During the war, Fanny was appointed Swiss station chief for the British Secret Service in Bern, counterpart to Allan Dulles for the American OSS.

Sir Robert Maxwell’s FBI file is getting more classified by the minute

The media mogul and alleged spy’s increasingly redacted ties to the PROMIS scandal include tapping a government database on tapping government databases

Sir Robert Maxwell is mostly remembered as the Czech-born British media mogul who owned the Daily Mirror and was a Member of Parliament. Less remembered is that he was an alleged spy for both the U.K. and Israel, and was accused of ties to the Mossad abduction of Mordechai Vanunu - accusations which he denied shortly before his apparent suicide. All but forgotten, however, are his alleged ties to the PROMIS affair, thanks in no small part to the FBI withdrawing his file from public view. The withheld materials describe Maxwell accessing an NSA database with information on tapping government databases, which is precisely what U.S. and Israeli intelligence are accused of modifying PROMIS to do.

According to FBI documents first obtained by William Hamilton of Inslaw Inc., the original creator of the PROMIS software which was stolen by the Justice Department, the FBI was contacted by employees of Sandia National Laboratories regarding Robert Maxwell and his company’s access to government databases based on information from the National Security Agency. As a result, the FBI opened a counterintelligence investigation to the matter. According to court documents and a FOIA appeal filed by William Hamilton and Inslaw, portions of these documents were suddenly reclassified by the FBI in response to Inslaw’s FOIA request.

Hamilton’s appeal letter to the DOJ, later entered by Inslaw into the court record by Inslaw as Exhibit A, alleges that the FOIA request had originally been assigned to FBI FOIA specialist Karen Browning. Inslaw alleged that on November 19, 1993 they had “learned from Ms. Browning that the Inslaw FOIA had been taken away from her and placed on a section chief’s desk.” The section chief apparently then assigned it to FOIA specialist Sue Knopka, which due to poor communication from the FBI, Inslaw apparently assumed was the FOIA section chief on whose desk the FOIA request had been placed. On December 9th, Ms. Knopka apparently informed Inslaw that her review had been completed, and her work was being re-reviewed by others (which is not uncommon). Inslaw alleged that according to the document’s marginalia, much of the material was declassified on December 13th, and re-reviewed on December 21st - at which point portions appear to have been reclassified and re-redacted.

The marginalia appears to confirm Inslaw’s statement, with stamps declaring that the information was “UNCLASSIFIED” on 12/13/92 and “Classified” on 12/21/92, with portions redacted for b7C to protect “personal information in law enforcement records.” Notably, the “personal information” redacted primarily consisted of file numbers responsive to an FBI search and the subject of those searches.

In 1994, Hamilton and Inslaw filed a new FOIA request, for which they received 20 pages. They appealed the subsequent redactions and withholdings, which were later upheld by the DOJ. Nine years later, the materials were re-reviewed and released with a conflicting set of redactions. In these versions of the documents, released in early 2013, all mentions of NSA involvement are redacted. However, the search slips are no longer as redacted - while the subject remains remains redacted - now for privacy per both b7C and b6 - the file numbers are no longer hidden. (cont.)

In response to a new FOIA request filed by the author, the FBI agreed to release additional materials on Robert Maxwell to their FOIA reading room, which had previously excluded the materials provided to Inslaw. These documents, reviewed by the FBI in April 2017, are more redacted and have more withholdings than the versions from 1992, 1994, or even just four years prior in 2013. Not only was every mention of the NSA withheld for referral, the entirety of every page which so much as mentioned the NSA was withheld - a stark increase over just a few years prior. Additional details are withheld on spurious grounds, such as the claim that the Bureau is prevented from disclosing the file number and the subject of the file being released, on the grounds that its disclosure “would disclose techniques and procedures for law enforcement investigations or prosecutions … [and] such disclosure could reasonably be expected to risk circumvention of the law.”

This is, of course, sheer nonsense. By the FBI’s own previous admission, the information could not possibly be used in that way. In the 1990s, the FBI had claimed this same information was classified, a status which it later lost. To now claim it re-exempted by statute is simply one more example of excessive classification and withholding of things related to the PROMIS affair. If, however, the FBI stands by the assertion that revealing the information would compromise “techniques and procedures for law enforcement investigations or prosecutions,” then the author welcomes the Bureau’s wrath for deliberately publishing the information from an earlier version.

Relating to the NSA, the FBI withheld eight pages to refer their entirety to another Agency. While the NSA is in no way named in the new release, prior releases have already revealed the NSA’s involvement. Perhaps coincidentally, the eight withheld pages are the eight pages relevant to the PROMIS affair. Of these eight pages, only one page was referred in its entirety a few years before. Prior to that, additional pages were located and reviewed. These do not appear to have been reviewed for either the 2013 or the 2017 release.

Nevertheless, the prior releases reveal a great deal about the investigation which shine a light on the accusations that Maxwell played a role in Israel’s modification and distribution of the PROMIS software and modified hardware that was being distributed simultaneous to Maxwell’s efforts to globally distribute computers and computer services. As previously discussed, CIA and NSA’s early efforts to exploit commercial online databases dated back to the 1980s. Before even those efforts, Maxwell’s company was working with the U.S. government. According to documents released in CIA’s CREST database, the Agency had been in touch with Maxwell’s company, Pergamon International, about potentially using their services just days before the FBI opened a counterintelligence into them.(cont.)

While it’s unknown what, if anything, came of Pergamon’s offer to let CIA access its information, either on disk or online, the type of material (foreign patents) being offered to CIA was certainly of interest to the Agency and would have matched its other open source collection efforts.

What is known, and is now being withheld by the FBI, is that 20 days after the CIA responded to Pergamon International’s letter, the FBI opened a 105 file on Robert Maxwell and Pergamon International. The 105 file type signifies that it was a Foreign Counterintelligence investigation, which FBI claims that even revealing the type of investigation or when the investigation was opened is unacceptable to them.

The FBI opened their investigation after being contacted by employees at Sandia National Laboratories about Maxwell and Pergamon International in response to information the Sandia employees had received from NSA. Their concern was apparently that Pergamon was connected to their systems and to systems in Russia. While the FBI investigated the Russian access and apparently found it to be of no concern, the truly notable part of the file seems to relate to the accusations that are made in the PROMIS case.

According to one of the releases of the formerly SECRET FBI document, Information On Demand, which had recently been acquired by Pergamon International, the databases involved were unclassified, but included “information concerning government and various available means of tapping government information databases.” Considering this is precisely what PROMIS was alleged to have been modified to do and distributed by Maxwell, this information which ultimately originates from the NSA is extremely relevant.

According to the file, the NSA displayed an apparent lack of interest in the matter, prompting the FBI to close the file.

The specifics of the database, of NSA’s involvement and several pages of documents remain classified or otherwise withheld through all releases thus far. It is possible, however, that the Bureau will later release new material with NSA’s approval. Additional requests on PROMIS and Inslaw have been filed with agencies including FBI, NSA and CIA, revealing the existence of thousands of pages of thus far unreleased materials. While FBI says they must wait for NSA’s approval to release some of the documents, William Hamilton of Inslaw has “been contacting NSA twice a year for seven years about the release of voluminous documents on INSLAW and PROMIS which NSA acknowledged having over seven years ago but has repeatedly delayed releasing on the grounds that NSA is waiting for sign-offs from other agencies.”
