Mortgage rates fall below 3 percent for first time

The average rate for a 30-year-fixed mortgage fell below 3 percent last week for the first time, according to the government-sponsored mortgage-finance company Freddie Mac.

The falling rates are making homes more affordable for buyers and spurring a wave of refinancing as homeowners seek to lower monthly payments. Freddie Mac estimates that at current rates, most homeowners with mortgages could save money by refinancing — a financial boon for potentially tens of millions during a recession.

“That’s a big deal,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist.

Freddie Mac reported the rate for a 30-year loan averaged at 2.98 percent for the week ending July 16, down from 3.81 percent a year earlier. That means a new homeowner buying an average-priced home, which in the Houston area is about $320,000, with 20 percent down would save $117 a month.

WASHINGTON – Chinese banks seen as complicit in Beijing's clampdown on Hong Kong face being cut off from much of the global financial system under wide-ranging sanctions that are a part of newly enacted U.S. legislation.

The Hong Kong Autonomy Act, signed Tuesday by U.S. President Donald Trump, sets out punitive measures against lenders that do business with sanctioned officials, including bans on receiving loans from American banks, participating in foreign-currency and banking transactions, and investing in equity or debt. "We know some people have differing opinions on this topic. We also recognize the role we can play to help protect the health and well-being of the communities we serve by following the evolving guidance of health officials like the CDC," the retailers' chief operating officers said in a blog post Wednesday.

The move comes two days after Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said a mask mandate in stores nationwide was "obviously something that's on our minds."

Best Buy and Starbucks started requiring consumers nationwide wear masks Wednesday.

"The ambassadors, identifiable by their black polo shirts, will work with customers who show up at a store without a face covering to try and find a solution," Smith and de la Rosa wrote. "We are currently considering different solutions for customers when this requirement takes effect on July 20."

At Sam’s Clubs, associates will remind members "of our requirement to wear a face covering when shopping with us" and will provide members without coverings with complimentary masks.

"We know it may not be possible for everyone to wear a face covering. Our associates will be trained on those exceptions to help reduce friction for the shopper and make the process as easy as possible for everyone," the company said.

Stores and private businesses can adopt policies "permitted by law for the health and safety" of employees and customers, the National Retail Federation said.

"Shopping in a store is a privilege, not a right," the federation's statement said. "If a customer refuses to adhere to store policies, they are putting employees and other customers at undue risk."

Prince Andrew’s Website Redirects to Statement About His ‘Ill-Judged Association’ With Epstein

In November 2019, the Duke of York resigned from all public roles on behalf of the royal family. The prince has been accused by one of the alleged victims of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein of having sex with her when she was underage. The 60-year-old royal has consistently denied the allegations.

The website of the UK's Price Andrew (thedukeofyork.org) has been taken down and it directs visitors to the Duke’s page on the Royal Family’s website, which contains a link to his statement of resignation from public roles over his “ill-judged association” with infamous American financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The Archived versions of the prince’s website suggests that it was functioning until 11 May and might have been subject to removal during the period from 11 May to 3 July, according to Newsweek Magazine.

“The contract with the host provider of The Duke of York’s website (www.thedukeofyork.org) came to an end and has not been renewed,” a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said in a statement to the publication. “The website has been redirected to The Duke of York's page on the Royal website.”

The spokesperson noted, "The website was maintained by The Duke of York’s office."

Online records of the website reportedly suggest that it was set to expire on 22 February 2021.

The Duke’s page on the royal family site, titled “About The Duke of York”, states in the first line: “In November 2019, His Royal Highness The Duke of York stepped back from his public duties for the foreseeable future.” There's link to his resignation statement, where he addresses “my ill-judged association with Jeffrey Epstein”.

“I continue to unequivocally regret my ill-judged association with Jeffrey Epstein. His suicide has left many unanswered questions, particularly for his victims, and I deeply sympathise with everyone who has been affected and wants some form of closure. I can only hope that, in time, they will be able to rebuild their lives. Of course, I am willing to help any appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigations, if required,” Prince Andrew wrote in the statement.

During a November 2019 interview on BBC, after which the prince resigned from public roles, the royal said that he did not regret befriending the known sexual abuser Epstein, who died in mysterious circumstances in a New York jail in August of that year while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

The Duke of York has been accused by at least one of financier’s victims, Virginia Giuffre, of having sex with her twice, in 2001 and 2002 while she was 17 years old. Giuffree's accusations were taken in testimony under oath and the 60-year-old royal has consistently denied the allegations. The Duke has since refused to offer his testimony about his ties with the late high-profile paedophile.

In May, the US Department of Justice filed a mutual legal assistance (MLA) request to the UK Home Office to interview Prince Andrew in Epstein’s case.

I couldn’t believe my ears. And yet I could. Have you ever tried to read the package insert for a “Corona” PCR test? You begin to feel after a while that the technobabble is some kind of spell, or bad dream. One of the ways to distinguish truth from deception in contemporary “science” is to track what gets removed. For example, David tells me, there was apparently an English abstract online at PubMed out of China that rendered the entire COVID testing industrial complex baseless and absurd.

“There was a famous Chinese paper that estimated that if you’re testing asymptomatic people, up to 80% of positives could be false positive. That was kind of shocking, so shocking that PubMed had to withdraw the abstract even though the Chinese paper appears to still be published and available. I actually have a translation with a friend. I translated it into English and it’s a really, standard calculation of what they call positive predictive value. The abstract basically said that in asymptomatic populations, the chance of a positive coronavirus test being a true positive is only about 20%. 80% will be false positive.”

“Doesn’t that mean the test means nothing?” I asked.

“The Chinese analysis was a mathematical analysis, a standard, the standard analysis that’s been done a million times before. There’s no reason to withdraw the paper for any reason. There’s nothing dramatic about the paper. It’s a really boring analysis. It’s just that they did the standard analysis and said, in some populations, like they estimated 1% of people are actually infected in the population. You could have 80% false positive. Uh, they couldn’t do a real analysis of false positives in terms of determining whether a test is correct or not because that requires a gold standard and the only gold standard is purification of the virus. So, we get back to the fact that the virus is not being purified. If you could purify the virus, then you could take a hundred people who tested positive and you could search for the virus in them. And if you found the virus in 50 out of a hundred and not in the other 50, you could say that the test is only accurate 50% of the time. But we have no way to do that because we haven’t yet purified the virus. And I don’t think we ever will.”

Dave Rasnick has had exchanges with David Crowe about this, and concurs, “To my knowledge, they have not yet purified this virus.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed a billion-dollar contract to import respirators from a Chinese company widely known for making faulty products.

BYD, which primarily manufactures electric vehicles, has no history whatsoever of making respirators or masks. According to health and safety experts, the company is notorious for supplying broken or faulty equipment to the United States, has deep ties to the Communist Party, and is suspected of using forced labor.

On February 7th, the company registered with the Chinese government to begin producing its own version of the N95 masks. The FDA previously denied them approval over quality concerns.

However, none of that stopped California’s governor from eagerly signing the contract to send 200 million of the questionable masks to hospitals across the state every month.

Industry watchdogs have called out BYD for years and warned that customers should be wary, including Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.). The lawmaker signed legislation banning the use of federal funds to buy buses from BYD. President Trump agreed and signed the ban into law in December.

Garamendi warned with this new contract, BYD could flood the market with “substandard devices,” which could very well end up costing lives.

The governor’s office hasn’t commented on whether or not they’re aware of BYD’s troubled track record, which included the sale of hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of faulty battery-powered buses to the city of Los Angeles.

The same Chinese masks Newsom purchased have already been rejected by countries in Europe, including the Netherlands. The country has recalled some 600,000 of the masks for being substandard or completely defective.

Man accused of punching NYPD chief, cops on Brooklyn Bridge released without bail

The Bronx man who allegedly punched NYPD Chief Terence Monahan and two other officers during protests on the Brooklyn Bridge Wednesday has been released without bail.

Quran Campbell, 25, is accused of socking the highest-ranking uniformed cop several times in the face as Monahan tried to arrest him after Campbell had allegedly punched another NYPD officer and lieutenant near the Manhattan approach to the bridge.

Campbell was arraigned on assault charges in Manhattan criminal court and was granted supervised release.

A second Bronx man, Banks Shaborn, 25, was also arraigned Thursday after allegedly clocking the same lieutenant, Richard Mack, of the department’s Strategic Response Group, multiple times in the face during the scuffle.

The suspects allegedly broke both of Mack’s orbital bones, sending him to the hospital for 12 stitches on his face after the melee. Monahan said he suffered some bruises and jammed fingers, but was otherwise fine.
